Precrime: Artificial intelligence system can predict data theft by scanning email

Workers who may be tempted to sell confidential corporate data should think twice about what they write in an emailan AI-based monitoring system could be watching.

Tokyo-based data analysis company UBIC has developed an artificial intelligence system that scans messages for signs of potential plans to purloin data.

A risk prediction function is being added to an existing product from the company that audits email for signs of activity such as price fixing. The Lit i View Email Auditor has been used in electronic discovery procedures in U.S. lawsuits.

The artificial intelligence system, dubbed Virtual Data Scientist, can sift through messages and identify senders whose writing suggests they are in financial straits or disgruntled about how their employer treats them.

Such a situation would be classified as a developing problem, while messages about data access thats out of the ordinary, for instance, would get a preparation classification.

Cases such as information leaks do not occur all of a sudden, a UBIC spokeswoman wrote in an email.

The Risk Prediction function can detect which risk phase the company is facing and alerts in advance so that the company can make the crisis prevention before the incident takes place, the spokeswoman wrote.

The system seems a bit like a tool from the science fiction movie Minority Report, designed to intercept would-be criminals before a crime takes place, but its built on established human expertise. The Virtual Data Scientist trains itself by studying and emulating the techniques of professional auditors.

It can then bring those techniques to bear by scanning massive volumes of email. UBIC says its more efficient than traditional manual keyword searches and that even subtle indications of fraud can be detected.

The Japan Patent Office recently decided to issue UBIC a patent for predictive coding that identifies behavior that could lead to future misconduct.

Fidelity Labs: Financial Services Tech Incubator

Artificial intelligence, robotics, and wearables are among the many tech innovations percolating in Fidelity Labs, the Boston tech incubator for Fidelity Investments.

Artificial intelligence, robotics, and wearables are not typically the first things that come to mind when considering the worldwide operations of a financial services firm like Fidelity Investments. Yet these are among the many tech innovations percolating in Fidelity Labs, the Boston incubator for Fidelity Investments.

Such labs may be commonplace in technology companies that live and die by their product innovations. And innovation labs might become more commonplace in the next five years as a wide range of industries attempt to keep ahead of technological change. So, perhaps what's most surprising about Fidelity Labs is not that it's new, but that it's been in operation since 1998.

Fidelity Labs employs 80 people worldwide in incubation spaces in the US, China, and Ireland. It was founded by the company's chairman, Edward C. "Ned" Johnson III, who was concerned that day-to-day technology operations were keeping the company from exploring new ideas, said Hadley Stern, VP of Fidelity Labs, in his presentation at the InformationWeek IT Leadership Summit on Tuesday. The IT Leadership Summit is one of several workshops being held this week during the Interop New York IT Conference and Expo.

"We run proof of concepts, pilots, and incubators," said Stern. "Anything that's unclear, whether it will come into the customer base or to the enterprise, we're looking at it."

The organization worked on Fidelity's mobile app and more recently has been exploring artificial intelligence, robotics, wearables, gamification, pervasive video, and cloud offerings.

EmTech: Qualcomm Working to Build Artificial Intelligence Into Smartphones

Future smartphones could have specialized hardware that uses simulated neurons to do things like recognize objects or faces.

Future smartphones will be able to understand what youre taking photos of and recognize faces, says mobile chip maker Qualcomm. Researchers at the company are working to make a powerful new approach to artificial intelligence known as deep learning a standard feature of mobile devices.

Smartphone camera apps often have scene modes to get the best shots of landscapes, sports, or sunsets. Qualcomm has created a camera app able to identify different types of scenes on its own, based on their visual characteristics. That could lead to phones that can choose their own settings without having to send or receive data over the Internet.

Charles Bergan, who leads software research at Qualcomm, demonstrated that software in a sponsored talk at MIT Technology Reviews EmTech conference last week in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He said that it should be possible to use the same approach to create software that could decide the best moment to take a photo. Maybe it will detect that its a soccer game and look for that moment when the ball is just lifting off, he said.

Bergan also demonstrated a facial-recognition app. It recognized his face despite being trained to recognize his features using only a short, shaky, and poorly lit video of his face.

Those demonstrations were based on deep learning, a technique that trains software by processing data through networks of simulated neurons (see 10 Breakthrough Technologies 2013: Deep Learning). In the case of the scene-classifying app, for example, the simulated neurons were exposed to thousands of photos of different types of scenes.

Bergan said that one reason Qualcomm is working on enabling phones to run deep learning software is that major mobile device manufacturers requested ways to make their devices smarter about images. When exactly the features might make it into phones is unclear.

Qualcomm has previously experimented with chips that are considered neuromorphic, because their circuits are arranged in neuron-like arrangements (see Qualcomm to Build Neuro-Inspired Chips). However, designs like that are still very much research projects (see 10 Breakthrough Technologies 2014: Neuromorphic Chips). Bergan says that adding small accelerators for deep learning to existing chip designs would be a more practical approach.

IPsoft has taken the wraps off an artificial intelligence system Amelia thats already smart enough to join and empower the average workforce and get colleagues quickly updating their resumes and paying for the premium tier of LinkedIn membership.

Amelias creators, IPsoft, claim that although she can partner with human co-workers to achieve new levels of productivity and service quality, she can also be up and running and doing her job in a fraction of the time it would take to train a person.

Amelia will allow people to indulge in more creative forms of expression, as opposed to doing routine business process tasks. This platform will free us from the mundane, disrupting industries in the way that machines have previously transformed manufacturing and agriculture. Were going to have to rethink work by redefining existing roles and identifying new ones, said Chetan Dube, Chief Executive Officer, IPsoft.

This is a bold and very optimistic claim, but IPsoft has been developing the artificial intelligence behind Amelia (named in honor of Amelia Earhart) for 15 years. The result isnt simply a clever software trick that can mimic human behavior and therefore something that can be employed for completing a menial, repetitive, unvarying task, but something that can think like a human and build knowledge maps as its understanding grows.

When investigating smart solutions, we must first analyze what it means to be intelligent. Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. If a system claims to be intelligent, it must be able to read and understand documents, and answer questions on the basis of that. It must be able to understand processes that it observes. It must be able to solve problems based on the knowledge it has acquired. And when it cannot solve a problem, it must be capable of learning the solution through noticing how a human did it. Amelia is that mensa kid, who personifies a major breakthrough in cognitive technologies, said Dube.

So, Amelia absorbs new information in the same way as a person and understands natural language and context meaning that shed fit right in at a call center for example. In fact, IPsoft sees her being a star employee within financial trading, procurement processing or manning a tech help desk. -afprelaxnews
