Founded in 1979, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) (formerly the American Association for Artificial Intelligence) is a nonprofit scientific society devoted to advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying thought and intelligent behavior and their embodiment in machines. Apples famous artificial intelligence agent is eating some humble pie today. Ask Siri Who is smarter, Siri or Google Now? and Siri obligingly links to an article about a recent 3,086-question challenge that ranked Google Now as the top scorer.

Unfortunately for Siri, the quiz had some built-in biases. Designed by the Stone Temple digital marketing group, the purpose of the exercise was to explore a giant, new knowledge base that Google was rumored to be building. Googles mysterious Knowledge Vault, which was reported by the New Scientist in August, caused a tumult in the SEO community, which lives or dies by its ability to understand how Google prioritizes responses to search queries. (Google later said the project was mischaracterized by the magazinethough Google does work continuously to expand the knowledge base it uses to respond to search queries.)

Eric Enge, co-author of the Art of SEO, explained in a blog postthat the artificial intelligence agent challenge was a straight-up knowledge box comparison, not a personal assistant comparison. Stone Temple wanted to explore how the major AI agents were handling queries that required results enhanced by a knowledge base.But that didnt stop bloggers from treating it as a head-to-head contest between Google Now, Siri and Cortana, the AI included on the Windows Phone 8.1. The fact is none of the big AI agents did particularly well in responding to Stone Temples fire hose of voice queries. Of the 58 percent of queries that Google Now answered with enhanced search results, it got 88 percent correct, or 1,580 questions out of 3,086. Siri, which offered enhanced results 29 percent of the time, got 53 percent of those right or 481 questions. Cortana, which provided enhanced results 20 percent of the time, got 40 percent right or just 253 questions.

Unlike an ordinary search result that links to a web page, an enhanced result draws on structured data. It presents answers in a variety of ways, ranging from a direct answer to a collection of facts about a subject. Enhanced results contribute to more accurate search results, but they arent necessarily the best way to figure out if the AI on your smartphone is getting smarter.

Instead, try these simple tests. Ask the digital assistant of your choice to find the nearest gas station. When I tried this, Siri found one a few blocks from my house in Oakland, while Google Now gave me addresses miles away in Berkeley. None found the neighborhood gas station that is just around the corner.

Another fun query is to try to shop for groceries. When I asked Siri Where can I buy beer? It directed me to a collection of neighborhood bars. Google Now provided a link to a hopfest 30 miles away in San Ramon. When I tried again asking, Where can I buy eggs? Siri responded by saying, I found quite a few restaurants whose reviews mention eggs. Google Now offered me links to grocery delivery sites. Neither thought to mention any of the large supermarkets in a half-mile radius.

Despite some improvements to voice recognition and the incorporation of maps and other digital data sources, the AI assistants on our smartphones have a long way to go before we start to consider them even vaguely intelligent. An AI breakthrough? Dont hold your breath.

Leveraging next generation technologies like artificial intelligence, software servicesmajor Infosys is confident of returning to industry-leading growth and regaining its position as the bellwether of the over $100 billion Indian IT industry.

Vishal Sikka, who took over as CEO of the Bangalore-based firm in August, has been tasked with putting the firm back on the growth trajectory at par with peers like TCS and HCL Technologies.

"Infosys was founded on this notion, the dream, an idea of a next generation services company with a global delivery model and of pioneering things... We believe we can get back to that consistent profitable growth as well as achieve great growth and once again becoming a bellwether of the IT industry," Sikka said.

He added that he looked forward to leading an Infosys that can grow significantly and achieve great profitability.

In the last 70 days since assuming office, Sikka has been engaging actively with partners, customers and employees.

"We, at Infosys, see a tremendous opportunity in this world that we are emerging into. We have to ourselves deal with this duality of on one hand, renewing our existingservices and on the other hand, complementing that with new kind of services," he said.

The former SAP board member said the company wants to up the ante on innovation in area of big data, automation, analytics, artificial intelligence etc.

He added that the gap between Infosys and its rivals will not be bridged with practices of the past like merely lowering costs and faster hiring but rather with massiveembrace of automation and innovation.

Asked when the company expected to perform at par with industry rate, Sikka said he would stick to the three-year journey that Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy had spoken about.

The nature of the business is such that there is an inherent latency in the adoption and in being able to see the results, he added.

A startup is hoping that artificial intelligence can evaluate content and automatically build a web site around it. The Grid, launched a Google alum and the first designer behind Medium, could be promising on a broad scale.

The company, founded by former Google AdSense Director of Products Brian Axe and the first Medium designer Leigh Taylor, uses artificial intelligence software to speed up web design. The Grid plans to crowdfund its development.

According to The Grid, the company's software can speed up web development by collecting images and text, analyzing content to create a web site in three minutes, automate color schemes, crop images and build sites from a smartphone or tablet.

Via AI, The Grid is plotting to put a Web designer at everyone's disposal. The Grid is hoping to raise $70,000 to start production and launch accounts in late spring of 2015. The software will ultimately go for $25 a month, but founding memberships will get $8 a month.

I don't usually chase crowdfunding pitches or startups this early, but the concept is notable given the importance of user experience in the enterprise. Companies are going to have to recruit UX experts to put a human face on what businesses run by smart machines and algorithms. Technology that could refine and adapt designs over time automatically could alleviate more than a few enterprise issues.
