Authorities Warn Against Anti-Aging Procedures Using Human Stem Cells

MANILA, Philippines --- The Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM) yesterday warned against anti-aging procedures and medical treatments that use stem cell harvested from human fetuses and even from egg cells of women.

Dr. Leo Olarte, PSSCM spokesperson, released a statement over the weekend to address some "alarming number of cases" in which stem cells used for anti-aging and medical treatments were actually gathered from babies and egg cells.

Olarte said the local medical community was alarmed when he reported what he learned from a recent scientific forum in the United States that centered on the issue of exploitation of humans for "commercial and economic purposes."

The PSSCM official, who is also the vice president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), said that in countries like Ukraine, Switzerland, Russia and even Malaysia, harvesting stem cells from human fetuses has become quite common that even normal and healthy babies are being used for harvesting.

This practice is known as allogenic sourced-out stem cells or cells that come from a matched related or unrelated donor.

Olarte called on the Department of Health (DOH) to check whether or not this practice is already prevalent in the country especially hearing reports that a Malaysian pharmaceutical group has already begun offering human-derived allogenic stem cells to several local doctors, including dermatologists and cosmetologists.

The stem cells were said to be sourced from Ukraine and Russia.

"With this in mind and realizing that we can consider this as exploitation of other human beings for personal benefit, we ask ourselves if this is an ethical and moral medical procedure," Olarte said.

"I am also calling on the Catholic Church to unite with us. We must put an end to this once and for all before it overwhelms us. We should prevent the entry of human-derived allogenic stem cells from aborted fetuses which are being exported to the Philippines today," he added.

BEAUTY at the expense of babies.

With this, the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM) gave another reason for Filipinos to stop patronizing the emerging stem cell therapy in the country revealing that some of them are actually sourced from human babies.

In a statement, PSSCM Spokesman Dr. Leo Olarte disclosed that it has come to their knowledge that there are a number of cases, where the stem cells used for several anti-aging procedures and other medical treatments are actually acquired from babies, with some even from elective abortion abroad.

With this in mind and realizing that we can consider this as exploitation of other human beings for personal benefit, we ask ourselves if this is an ethical and moral medical procedure, Olarte said.

We cannot stand by and merely watch how they exploit people in poverty just to profit while allowing others who are economically well off to benefit from this, he furthered.

He said the information came after they attended a scientific forum in the United States that tackled the issue of human commoditization for commercial and economic purposes.

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) noted how human fetus harvesting for stem cell transplant, also known as allogenic sourced-out stem cells, has become prevalent in countries like the Ukraine, Switzerland, Russia, and Malaysia.

Last month, the PSSCM had already raised concerns over the risks of complications, and possibly death, from stem cell treatments.

The PSSCM had said that stem cell patients run the risk of graft-versus-host disease (allogeneic transplant only), stem cell (graft) failure, organ injury, infections, cataracts, infertility, new cancers, and death.

Stem cell therapy is a type of intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury.

Suneva Medical Expands its Operations to Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Suneva Medical, Inc., a privately-held aesthetics company, today announced that it has expanded from its San Diego base to open an office in Santa Barbara. The Company has leased office space at 5383 Hollister Avenue to meet the rapidly growing needs of its team.

"Santa Barbara has been home to some important and successful aesthetics companies and has generated a tremendous pool of experienced local professionals. We have made several key hires in finance, marketing, clinical, and regulatory over the past few months and will continue to recruit from the great local talent pool as we grow our business," commented Nick Teti, Chairman and CEO of Suneva Medical.

This move follows several significant corporate developments for Suneva Medical in 2012. The company expanded its portfolio with the acquisitions of two best-in-class topical facial aesthetic products, ReFissa and ReGenica, while also completing critical milestones in its long-term 5-year and acne scar indication clinical trials for its dermal filler ArteFill.

ReFissa is the only .05% tretinoin cream available on the market with a broad FDA approval for treating facial fine lines and wrinkles, mottled hyperpigmentation and tactile roughness. It represents the gold standard in anti-aging tretinoins. ReFissa is formulated in a soothing emollient base specifically suited to hydrating mature skin.

ReGenica Skincare is the latest scientific breakthrough fusing the promise of stem cells with the power of growth factors. The ReGenica line of products was developed by Dr.Gail K. Naughton, a world-renowned scientist in regenerative medicine. ReGenica contains a highly potent composition of active growth factors and proteins developed through a revolutionary and patented method. The proprietary blend of ingredients in ReGenica have been clinically proven to help reduce the signs of aging and accelerate recovery times after laser treatments. Allure Magazine recently featured ReGenica in its December issue on "Totally Gorgeous Skin" and quoted renowned dermatologist, Dr. Doris Day, who stated "What we've been waiting for is a formula like this one with additional science to back it up. This line may help skin appear more youthful over time."

Suneva Medical also launched a multi-center study to investigate the efficacy of ArteFill, its lasting dermal filler, for the treatment of acne scars. Between two and five million people in the U.S. on an annual basis suffer from acne, with approximately 60%-70% of them going on to experience scarring. There is no product on the market today that is approved for treating this distressing and highly prevalent condition. Suneva worked with the FDA to create a novel classification system to evaluate acne scars and subsequently launched the study with 10 premier clinical investigational sites across the country. Recruitment and enrollment was quickly completed and all study subjects have now received treatment. Efficacy and safety data will be available later this year with plans to submit the PMA Supplement for the new indication by the end of 2013.

About Suneva Medical Suneva Medical, Inc. is a privately-held aesthetics company focused on developing, manufacturing and commercializing novel, differentiated products for the dermatology and the plastic and cosmetic surgery markets. STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Editor's note: Dr. Anthony Youn is an assistant professor of surgery at the Oakland University/William Beaumont School of Medicine in Michigan. He is the author of "In Stitches," a memoir about growing up Asian-American and becoming a doctor.

(CNN) -- For the first time in six years, the number of people enhancing their breasts and plumping their buttocks is declining. The number of people lifting, injecting and lasering their faces is growing.

So who's powering this sudden growth in facial plastic surgery? Baby boomers.

Every year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases its statistics about the number of plastic surgeries performed the year before. It's an accurate snapshot of the state of plastic surgery in the United States.

2012 saw a record number of people undergoing cosmetic procedures, with more than 14.6 million procedures performed in total, an increase of 5% over the year before. The number of actual surgeries performed dropped 2%, but this was more than offset by a 6% rise in minimally invasive cosmetic treatments.

Breast augmentation remained the number one cosmetic surgery, a position it's held since the FDA ended the silicone gel implant moratorium in 2006. However, in 2012, the number of women undergoing this procedure declined 7% from the year before, with just over 286,000 breast enhancements performed.

Buttocks augmentation was one of the fastest-growing procedures of the past decade, due in no small part to public fascination with the ample derrieres of celebs Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian. The number of people undergoing buttock enhancement also declined in 2012, down 36% from the year before, to just under 3,800 procedures.

Antiaging Medicine and Research, World Antiaging Network & Medical Wellness Association USA Brings Indomedicon …

The 4th Conference in Antiaging, Lifespan and Integrative Medicine at Hilton Hotel and Resorts, Mumbai, India on 23rd and 24th of February 2013. The congress will be attended by the physicians from across the globe to listen to eminent speakers from various fraternity of the Medical fields says Dr. Deepak Chaturvedi, the President of INDOMEDICON.

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (PRWEB) February 20, 2013

While other eminent speaker Dr. Anoop Chaturvedi, CEO and the Founder President of the World Antiaging Network (WAAN) the first peer to peer free global network of antiaging physicians, says that with the advancement of modern medicine and technology the life expectancy of individuals are increasing (increasing the old olds) and on the other end, due to various modifiable/non-modifiable, environmental/genetic/life style and other factors, people are showing early signs of aging affecting the daily living and productivity adversely (increasing the old young). The Social Jet Lag (working against the circadian rhythm) has compounded the adverse aging issues by altering the Endocrine and Nutritional homeostasis.

Dr. Light from Dallas Texas, USA comments that Antiaging Medicine works on the principle of preventive medicine (Primordial/Primary/Secondary/Tertiary) applied along with clinical medicine at Individual/population level. With all the discipline of medicine integrated together the Aging process can be made more graceful.

Dr. N.D.Karandikar, Head of Cardiology Department, B.J.Medical College, Pune comments that Aging is no more limited to 60 years or more of age. The effects of Hypertension, Diabetes and other chronic illnesses occurring early in the calendar young population is a great matter of concern. The Antiaging and Age Management approach needs to be initiated early in life. Dr.Deepak Chaturvedi seconds his opinion and advocates the more widespread application of the screening procedures early in life.

Genetic factors, lifestyle, and societal investments in a safe and healthful environment are important aspects of successful aging. Traditionally, the aging process has been considered physiologic and unavoidable, but it may not be necessary to accept the grim stereotype of aging as an unalterable process of decline and loss, says Dr. V.B.Borade, Dean, Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College, Sangli.

One of the eminent pharmacist of International repute Jim, who had also appeared on Dr Phil's TV show says that as life expectancy increases during the coming decades, the overarching goal should be an increase in years of healthy life with a full range of functional capacity at each stage of life.

Compression of morbidity can be achieved by adapting healthy lifestyle measures, and several aspects of the aging process of the endocrine system invite the development of routine medical intervention programs offering long-term replacement therapy with one or more hormones to delay the aging process and to allow humans to live for a longer period in a relatively intact state, concludes Dr. Anoop Chaturvedi.

After the huge success of Indomedicon 1, 2, and 3 now Indomedicon 4 is coming with a promise to deliver a totally new flavor where technology meets evidence based medicine, loaded with latest recent advances in antiaging genetics, antiaging nutrition, Aesthetics, Hormone modulation, Weight loss, electronic medical record system and social media tools to enhance anti-aging practices.

The universal process of aging is becoming better understood. There appear to be shared underlying cellular and molecular processes that induce widespread dysregulation in key systems. This dysregulation contributes to clinical manifestations of a AGING phenotype and can be used to understand how to evaluate and manage AGING.

Hormones for health

Hormones are of vital importance for good health, both in men and women.

HORMONES are vital to our health. They instruct our cells to do important metabolic functions. Too much or too little hormones can cause cells and organs to malfunction. Since our organs are not independent of one another, any upset in one system will soon affect many or all other organ systems.

There are many hormones that regulate the body. Of these, about a dozen need to be monitored and fine-tuned if you want to be really healthy.

Unfortunately, the role of hormones has not been properly understood by many doctors. This is reflected in the fact that when you do your comprehensive medical check-up, the blood tests will only include one hormone (TSH or FT4).

How can the doctors give an accurate assessment of your health when they dont even check the other important hormones?

Anti-ageing doctors, on the other hand, will investigate at least 10 other hormones to have a better estimation of the state of the body, and to be able to optimise these hormones should they be at sub-optimal levels.

Other doctors have written about the subject, but I would like to share my perspective on this.

How important are these hormones? And how do they function? Let me give three illustrations:

Insulin

On the first day of the fasting month, most Muslims who fast get very tired, and their productivity at work suffers. Then at breaking-fast time, just a glass of syrup water or air bandung will recharge and revitalise them. Of course, they get used to the fasting in the next few days.

Cancer Patients Finding New Treatments are Just as Effective and Less Toxic than Traditional Methods

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine supports new innovative cancer treatments that cause less harm to the body than chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and other methods

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) February 15, 2013

Aetna.com explains that over 1.4 million new cancer cases are diagnosed every year in the United States, 650,000 of which seek chemotherapy (amgen.com). 550,000 people die from cancer each year according to nanomedicinecenter.com. With side effects and death rates from chemo being so extreme, medical experts have turned to other possible methods when threating cancer patients. NCBI.com states that 40 percent of cancer patients turn to complementary and alternative medicine.

Mark Rosenberg MD. has a personal relationship to the disease that jump started vigorous research for a new treatment method. After his mother died from lung cancer, Rosenberg decided to dedicate his time and resources to finding healthier, more innovative methods of cancer treatment.

Rosenbergs innovative treatments consist of immunotherapy, which stimulates the innate immune system. Glycolytic inhibitors prevent cancer cells from utilizing sugar within the body, and inhibit the release of tissue that destroys enzymes.

For over 70 years, chemotherapy has been used to treat cancer. According to an article written by Dr. Rosenberg, chemo adds two or three months onto the estimated survival time. While this method does extend the life expectancy when used in vitro, chemotherapy takes an aggressive toll on a patients internal organs while treated inside the body. Rosenberg developed several methods of new integrative treatment that he found has a more positive effect on the bodys overall well- being as opposed to chemotherapy and radiation.

According to the Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), Traditional cancer treatment is efficacious for early stage cancer. Unfortunately, in the U.S., we have made little progress in the treatment of advanced stage cancers in the past twenty years. A study was published in the British journal, "Clinical Oncology," in December, 2004, entitled, "The Contribution of Cytotoxic Chemotherapy to 5-Year Survival in Adult Malignancies." The authors, one medical oncologist and two radiation oncologists, analyzed the results of all randomized clinical trials performed in the U.S. and Australia, that reported a statistically significant increase in 5-year survival due to the use of chemotherapy in adult malignancies. The trials that were analyzed were performed between 1990 and 2004. Overall survival benefit of less than 5% has been achieved in the adjuvant treatment of breast, colon, and head and neck cancers. Clearly, the need for an alternative form of cancer treatment is great and imminent.

On the contrary, I have extended both quality of life and lifespan. Most patients who make their way to my office have already failed chemotherapy and have been told to go home and enjoy their last few months. There is no greater satisfaction than crying with a beautiful forty year-old woman because her metastatic breast cancer to hips and spine is no longer seen on bone scan; or a vibrant sixty seven year-old man with metastases from his kidney to liver, lung, spine, and rib enters remission, after being told by his oncologist that he has perhaps 2 months to live. And this happens over and over, outside of the standard of care, stated Rosenberg.

While traditional cancer treatments do have positive long term effects on some patients, new age innovative treatment methods may be a new option for others who are not so lucky.

A4M hosts one of the first fellowships in integrative cancer therapies. The program is designed to start improving your cancer patients quality of life and survival rates through innovative therapies.

IAPAM Publishes its Top Aesthetic Medicine Trends for 2013

The International Association For Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPAM) has just released its Top Aesthetic Medicine Trends for 2013. With the Affordable Healthcare Act now moving forward, successful physicians will need to incorporate synergistic non-insurance based modalities into their practices, from advanced acne treatments to hCG for weight loss to be successful in 2013.

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

1. Stem Cells for Skin Rejuvenation

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cells enriched treatments are evolving. In 2013, PRP therapy will become more mainstream as: its popularity grows, physicians become more aware of this therapy as being used by competitors and colleagues, and the cost of the therapy declines so that it is comparable to botox and dermal filler treatments.

2. Advanced Acne Treatments

Advancements in the treatment of acne have progressed exponentially, from the development of industry-leading topical therapies by companies like PCA Skin, to the use of acne clearing systems, like Palomars Acleara.

2013 will see an increase in physicians adding advanced acne treatments to their practices. Technologies and procedures, coupled with the sale of physician-directed acne management skin care lines, can be a profitable addition to any practice.

3. The BB Cream Phenomenon

An adjunct to the growth in advanced acne, blemish and dark spot treatments is the rise in the popularity of the BB cream, or blemish balm or blemish base. This is an all-in-one treatment, used to both cover and treat blemishes such as acne, sun spots and age spots, as well as act as an overall serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock. It also has anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and soothing effects.

2013 will see the development of additional lines of BB Creams as well as CC Creams (Colour Control Creams) and associated topicals (AA Creams etc.)

Dr. Yves Hébert to Speak at the 19th World Congress of Aesthetic Medicine

Dr. Yves Hbert, from Montreal, will be speaking at the 19th World Congress of Aesthetic Medicine of the UIME which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from the 14th to the 16th of February, 2013 on facial rejuvenation and the antioxidant revolution in skin care.

Montreal, Quebec (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

The 19th World Congress of Aesthetic Medicine 2013 will focus on a strong scientific program combined with teaching, training and live workshops to educate doctors from all over the world on the latest trends, new techniques, discoveries, products and devices in the field of Aesthetic Medicine. This is the first time in history that this world congress is being held in an African country and it is probably the most important aesthetic medical event ever in Southern Africa.

Dr. Hbert will be speaking at the Congress on the following three subjects:

1.Understanding Facial Structures for a Global and Safe Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

The process of aging of the face results from the gradual absorption of fat, decreased thickness and elasticity of skin, decreased adherence between skin and subcutaneous tissues, sagging of soft tissues, weakening of the orbital muscle and septae, and progressive decrease in the volume of the craniofacial skeleton.

Up until recently, these different issues of the aging face have not been addressed in a global approach.

The new understanding of the role of the multiple components of the facial structures and their interrelations should lead to improvements in rejuvenation techniques that focus not only on the skin but also on deeper tissues.

This presentation will review the different layers of skin, soft tissues, muscles and bones and the location of nerves and vessels, outline how these anatomical structures are all connected and give the cosmetic physician the tools for a safe and thorough combination of therapies in global facial rejuvenation.

Randstad Healthcare Employee Confidence Index Shows Renewed Confidence Among Healthcare Workers

BOSTON, Feb. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The fourth quarter findings from the Randstad Healthcare Employee Confidence Index reveals that healthcare workers are more confident in nearly all aspects surveyed, including strength of the economy and availability of jobs. In addition, U.S. healthcare workers are much more likely to look for a new job compared to the third quarter of 2012. The online survey, conducted in October through December, 2012 by Harris Interactive on behalf of Randstad Healthcare, showed that overall employee confidence rose by 4.1 points to 57.5 in the fourth quarter. The survey of 299 workers included physicians, healthcare administrators and other healthcare professionals.

"Given the latest findings of our Healthcare Employee Confidence Index, it appears much of the anxiety around the fiscal cliff concerns have all but dissipated as we enter 2013," said Steve McMahan, executive vice president of Randstad US, Professionals. "The healthcare employment market has exhibited strong growth in the past months, adding 23,000 jobs in January and rising 320,000 over the year. The long-term outlook for the industry is equally as promising. Specifically, physicians in urgent care and those with specialization in anti-aging medicine are in high demand, as are registered nurses in both permanent and temporary positions. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, with 26 percent gains from 2010 to 2020."

This year, many hospitals will be focused on cost containment and efficiency as they navigate compliance with recent changes in healthcare reform. The temporary nursing industry will be a key strategy for these healthcare organizations to increase their supply of nursing talent and new demands without sacrificing patient outcomes. In a study released in December by the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, which examined data from more than 1.3 million patients and 40,000 nurses in more than 600 hospitals, researchers from the university concluded that hiring temporary nurses immediately increases the nurse-to-patient rationwhich correlates directly to decreased patient mortality rates.

Doctors Health Press Reports on Study: New Compound Offers Many Anti-Aging Benefits

Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study, published in Molecular and Cellular Biology, finding that hydrogen sulfide can offer a wide scope of anti-aging benefits.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 10, 2013

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-2/new-compound-found-for-anti-aging) notes, scientists may have uncovered one compound that could play a huge role in preserving a bodys youthfulness. While hydrogen sulfide has been getting attention for its effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, evidence is mounting that hydrogen sulfide slows aging by inhibiting free-radical reactions (just as an antioxidant does), activating a key enzyme that may regulate the human lifespan, and interacting with a gene that has great influence in anti-aging matters.

As the article New Compound Found for Anti-Aging reports, the body produces hydrogen sulfide, which has many important effects. For example, it acts in certain ways to relax arteries and keep them clear of possible blockages (which lead to atherosclerosis). It is also a powerful antioxidant. It also helps fight inflammation, the cause of a vast array of diseases.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article explains that levels of hydrogen sulfide in the body decline with age. In rats, lower levels of hydrogen sulfide were linked with high blood pressure. In general, a lack of this compound is implicated in heart disease.

The article adds that declining levels of hydrogen sulfide are thought to undermine neurological health, as well. In animal models of Parkinsons disease, levels have been very low. The same can be said of people who suffer from Alzheimers disease. There are even suggestions that hydrogen sulfide may protect against cancer.

Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin concludes by noting that the researchers believe evidence now strongly suggests that hydrogen sulfide could become the next major agent in preventing aging and the diseases that come with it.

Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) February 09, 2013

Holistic and alternative centers provide treatment with the same goals as traditional hospitals and clinics, namely, to create a relaxed environment for those who are delivering care, to assure safety and reduce stress for patients, and to improve overall quality of health. This approach is conducive to maintaining the atmosphere needed for some of the more popular CAM therapies like Yoga, Ayurveda, acupuncture, naturopathy, and many others.

Legal loopholes fuel growth of steroid clinics in South Florida

Anthony Boschs clinic, now the focus of a widening steroid investigation, was hidden in plain sight, next to a bank in an office complex on South Dixie Highway across from the University of Miami. Yet it was beyond the reach of state health regulators.

The clinic, BioGenesis of America, fell into a gray area of Florida healthcare law that has allowed many anti-aging or rejuvenation clinics to proliferate across the state with little government oversight.

Exploiting the same legal loopholes that made South Florida the top source of black-market prescription painkillers, these clinics have helped make the region one of the top markets in the United States for illegal steroids and growth hormones feeding potentially dangerous medications not just to athletes and bodybuilders, but also to aging men hoping to fend off Father Time.

How these anti-aging clinics are getting by the law is beyond me, said Dr. Gary Wadler, a New York physician who works with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Bosch is now under criminal investigation from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration over allegations that he supplied steroids and human growth hormones to several Major League Baseball players, including New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez. Boschs ties to the ballplayers were first reported by the Miami New Times, which received copies of what the newspaper says are Boschs handwritten ledgers from his Coral Gables clinic, which opened last March but now sits vacant.

In 2009, the DEA also investigated whether Bosch supplied banned substances to All-Star Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers. No charges were filed. Bosch, 49, could not be reached for comment, and his lawyer did not return messages.

While Boschs name may be familiar to the DEA or baseballs doping investigators, hes an unknown to Florida health regulators.

Bosch is suspected of prescribing and administering medications, yet he is not a doctor or licensed healthcare professional regulated by the states Department of Health. The Health Department does investigate people suspected of prescribing drugs without a license, but the department would not say whether Bosch was the target of an investigation.

Bosch is described as Dr. in papers filed in 2009 for a now-defunct corporation, state records show. He is listed as having a Ph.D. on the BioGenesis Facebook page.

Boschs clinic advertised as a spa on its Facebook page was also unregulated, state health officials said. Most medical clinics in Florida are monitored by the state Agency for Health Care Administration; however, AHCA only inspects clinics that accept insurance and many anti-aging clinics do not take insurance.
