Carrillo suspension may signal confrontation ahead between MLB, star players

By Cliff Corcoran

Major League Baseball fired a warning shot at the players named on the Biogenesis documents obtained by the Miami New Timesby suspending minor league pitcher Cesar Carrillo on Friday for 100 games for his involvement with the since-shuttered Miami anti-aging clinic, which the New Times exposed as having supplied performance-enhancing drugs to a variety of athletes, including several major leaguers. Carrillos suspension was not the result a positive drug test. Rather, per ESPNs T.J. Quinn, Carrillo was suspended for 50 games for being on Biogenesis documents and another 50 for lying to MLB about knowing [Anthony] Bosch, the former head of Biogenesis.

As commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig has the power to suspend players without a positive test, but the litigious power of the players union has thus far kept him in check. Carrillo, however, is not on any teams 40-man roster, and is thus not a member of the union. That allowed baseball to strong-arm him into talking, and, when he refused, come down hard with the 100-game suspension. That suspension comes just two weeks after Selig spoke publicly about desiring stiffer penalties for positive tests and in conjunction with Quinns report that baseball is determined to punish the other players on Biogenesiss scrolls, including Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez.

The suspension of Carrillo, who was Brauns road roommate at the University of Miami a decade ago, was clearly intended to send a message to the other players connected to Biogenesis, as well as the rest of the league, but I wonder if its an empty threat. Im not a lawyer and have no inside information on this case, but it seems clear from its inaction that MLB doesnt have enough evidence to suspend players who are protected by the union, which as far as Ive seen means everyone but Carrillo (even Mets outfield prospect Cesar Puello is a member of New Yorks 40-man roster, and thus the union). MLB reportedly tried to get the FBI and DEA to investigate Biogenesis in the hope that such an investigation would produce sufficient evidence, but neither has shown any interest thus far. We learned last week that the Florida Department of Health is investigating Bosch for practicing medicine and/or pharmacology without a license, but that investigation seems to be so narrowly focused on Bosch that it is unlikely to produce any new information that would work in MLBs favor.

As things stand now, Carrillo seems to have been unfairly singled out because of his weak position. I worry that Selig and Major League Baseball, perhaps in response to seeing Brauns positive test overturned by an arbitrator a year ago (an arbitrator who, by the way, has since been fired), are abandoning due process when it comes to performance-enhancing drug cases. I dont approve of PED use in professional sports, but one need not be Jose Canseco to detect the degree to which the attempts to identify users in baseball over the past decade has come to resemble a witch hunt. My fear is that Carrillos suspension is a sign that the trials and executions have begun.

Wrinkles: New Anti – Aging Skin Care Product Helps Reverse Signs of Aging

PALM DESERT, Calif., March 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Women and men of a certain age can reduce the appearance of wrinkles with the new, improved version of The Ageless Secret an all natural, hydrating skin energizing and tightening spray that lifts, tones, and hydrates like a beauty mask.

"The Ageless Secret allows you to look younger as you get older because it uses our proprietary technology, Energetic Cosmetic that helps reverse the signs of aging as it reduces the appearance of wrinkles on the face, forehead, eyes and other body parts," said Jim Kaszyk, a research chemist and president of KASZ Enterprises, Inc. which has been making and improving the product for the past 15 years.

"The Ageless Secret is a low-cost reverse-aging skin care product alternative to expensive facial procedures like surgery and specialized spa treatments," he said. "There is no pain, no down time and no side effects. The anti-wrinkle spray has a special energy that may help hydrate and revitalize skin stem cells."

The beauty product supports the body's built-in skin renewal system, which replaces skin cells on hands every 24 hours and on the face every 28 days.

"It is our job to make those new skin cells look the very best we can. With regular daily use you will see your skin's appearance improve. It produces a temporary skin tightening and improvement in skin elasticity. Skin regenerates from within, so it helps your body make those cells the best they can be."

The Ageless Secret boosts the electrical energy of the skin, revitalizes the water within, restores luster and smoothness and immediately improves skin elasticity by up to 50%.

The science behind the product is based on the research of Dr. Harold Saxton Burr of Yale and which was documented on a PBS video, "American Health Journal: Discoveries In Alternative Medicine."

The William A. Tiller Research Institute, an independent lab, verified that the product infused the water with energy.

Minneapolis Facial Plastic Surgeon Reverses Signs of Aging With No-Downtime Treatment

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwire - Mar 14, 2013) - Dr. Jess Prischmann, a facial plastic surgeon in Minneapolis, MN, says new research is showing that a regimen of light-based treatments can rejuvenate skin, resulting in long-term anti-aging benefit for patients. The procedure, called Broadband Light (BBL), is a highly effective treatment that not only creates visible improvement, but has also been shown to make skin behave younger on a genetic level. [1] As an added benefit, Dr. Prischmann also says the noninvasive nature of the procedure makes BBL attractive to those patients that want to look younger, but may not be ready for a surgical procedure.

Dr. Prischmann uses a laser-type device to perform the treatment, termed "Forever Young BBL." This protocol has been shown to make aged human skin more closely resemble younger skin in two recent studies. In an August 2012 study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, "Forever Young BBL" treatments resulted in improved genetic behavior of skin. The authors stated that skin treated with BBL "became 'rejuvenated' to be more like youthful skin, resulting in decreased elastosis and more uniform collagen deposition; leading to improvements in fine wrinkles and pigmentation." [1, 2] In a February 2013 study in Cosmetic Dermatology, researchers were able to show that a regimen of BBL treatments can "reduce and delay long-term signs of aging." [3]

While Dr. Prischmann stresses the need to develop a unique and customized approach to each patient at her Minneapolis facial plastic surgery practice, she adds that there are several characteristics that good candidates for BBL have in common, including:

Regardless of whether patients decide to pursue a noninvasive or surgical approach, Dr. Prischmann says that BBL is not an either/or procedure and requires a regular regimen to maintain youthful skin and delay the signs of aging. Additionally, she says BBL is often combined with other surgical and nonsurgical methods of facial rejuvenation, such as BOTOX Cosmetic, dermal fillers, or chemical peels, to help patients achieve the aesthetic appearance they desire. Dr. Prischmann also stresses the importance of consulting with an experienced, fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon:

"Aging occurs on every level, from the bony framework, to the outermost layers of skin. That's why it is important to seek the advice of a facial plastic surgeon."

About Jess Prischmann, MD

Dr. Jess Prischmann earned her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, where she was elected to the National Medical Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as well as a residency in Otolaryngology. Dr. Prischmann was also the co-host of "Medical Edge Weekend," a medical radio talk show. She is available for interview upon request.

This groundbreaking research was published in the journal Science on Friday, and could pave the way for medicine that could mimic resveratrol - a compound that pharmaceutical industries have spent millions of dollars attempting to explore how it can be used to improve the body's defenses against aging and disease.

The study was led by Harvard geneticist David Sinclair, and revealed a link between a group of enzymes called sirtuins - which trigger proteins that regenerate cells - and resveratrol.

This link could open doors to a new design of resveratrol-related drugs. Sinclair explained, "Ultimately, these drugs would treat one disease, but unlike drugs of today, they would prevent 20 others. In effect, they would slow aging."

The target enzyme, SIRT1, goes into action on its own via exercise and calorie restriction, but it can also be improved through activators.

The most common naturally-active trigger is resveratrol - small amounts of which are found in red wine - however, more powerful synthetic activators are currently being created.

The technology was bought by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in 2008. Now, four thousand synthetic activators have been created - 100 times as potent as one glass of red wine - three of which are currently in human trials.

Sinclair says, "Our drugs can mimic the benefits of diet and exercise, but there is no impact on weight."

Anti – Aging Breakthrough!

Drugs that combat ageing may be available within five years, following landmark work led by an Australian researcher.

The work, published in the March 8 issue of Science, finally proves that a single anti-ageing enzyme in the body can be targeted, with the potential to prevent age-related diseases and extend lifespans.

The paper shows all of the 117 drugs tested work on the single enzyme through a common mechanism. This means that a whole new class of anti-ageing drugs is now viable, which could ultimately prevent cancer, Alzheimer's disease and type 2 diabetes.

"Ultimately, these drugs would treat one disease, but unlike drugs of today, they would prevent 20 others," says the lead author of the paper, Professor David Sinclair, from UNSW Medicine, who is based at Harvard University. "In effect, they would slow ageing."

The target enzyme, SIRT1, is switched on naturally by calorie restriction and exercise, but it can also be enhanced through activators. The most common naturally-occurring activator is resveratrol, which is found in small quantities in red wine, but synthetic activators with much stronger activity are already being developed.

Although research surrounding resveratrol has been going for a decade, until now the basic science had been contested. Despite this, there have already been promising results in some trials with implications for cancer, cardiovascular disease and cardiac failure, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, fatty liver disease, cataracts, osteoporosis, muscle wasting, sleep disorders and inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, arthritis and colitis (inflammatory bowel disease).

"In the history of pharmaceuticals, there has never been a drug that tweaks an enzyme to make it run faster," says Professor Sinclair, a geneticist with the Department of Pharmacology at UNSW.

Researcher claims anti – aging breakthrough

An Australian researcher claims that drugs formulated to combat aging may be available within five years.

According to Professor David Sinclair, from UNSW Medicine, who is based at Harvard University, the treatment is capable of targeting a single anti-aging enzyme in the body - with the potential to prevent age-related diseases and extend lifespans.

Indeed, a recent research paper published by Sinclair in the March 8 of Science illustrates all of the 117 drugs tested work on the single enzyme through a common mechanism. Meaning, a whole new class of anti-aging drugs is now viable, which could ultimately help to prevent cancer, Alzheimers disease and type 2 diabetes.

"Ultimately, these drugs would treat one disease, but unlike drugs of today, they would prevent 20 others," explained Sinclair. "In effect, they would slow aging."

The target enzyme, SIRT1, is switched on naturally by calorie restriction and exercise, but can also be enhanced through activators. Although research surrounding resveratrol has been going for a decade, until now the basic science had been contested. Despite this, there have already been promising results in some trials with implications for cancer, cardiovascular disease and cardiac failure, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases, fatty liver disease, cataracts, osteoporosis, muscle wasting, sleep disorders and inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, arthritis and colitis.

"In the history of pharmaceuticals, there has never been a drug that tweaks an enzyme to make it run faster. Our drugs can mimic the benefits of diet and exercise, but there is no impact on weight," said Sinclair. "[As such], the first therapeutic to be marketed will [likely] be for diabetes.

To be sure, there have been limited trials in people with type 2 diabetes and the skin inflammatory disease, psoriasis. There were benefits to the metabolism in the first group and a reduction in skin redness in the second.

The drugs can be administered orally, or topically. So far, there have been no drugs developed targeting ageing skin, but one major skin care range has developed a cream with resveratrol in it.

There will be special presentations and live patient demonstrations throughout the event, including the introduction of the LumiCam, FDA approved for thermal imaging of the skin and new innovations, with the debut of the Maximus platform.( FDA pending).

The Maximus device represents future of aesthetic medicine as the world's only system to combine TriPollar RF, TriFracitonalRF and TriLipo Dynamic Muscle Activiation( DMA) - allowing physicians a platform solution for a wide range of deramtological conditions, including body contouring, cellulite reduction, skin tightening and acne scar revision.

The Apollo powered by TriPollar is FDA-cleared for the non-invasive treatment of mild to moderate facial wrinkles. The 30-minute, no-downtime procedure has been globally embraced for its off-label use on the body with great success in treating cellulite and circumferential reduction. Unlike its competitors, the Apollo is completely pain-free, making it a game changer in the RF market. Moreover, TriPollar differs from other technologies because it allows patients of all skin types to achieve measurable anti-aging resultsboth immediately and long-term.

TriPollar treatments have a truly attractive profile for non-surgical body contouring and anti-aging, says Dr. Ronald Moy, renowned Beverly Hills dermatologist and past president of the AAD. I have used nearly every other non-invasive technology available, and when it comes to the patient satisfaction, TriPollar is superior. My patients are experiencing remarkable results from the very first treatment with absolutely no pain.

Patients benefit from both visible immediate and long-term results. The immediate effects include a smoother, tightened appearance and texture. Most clients realize the optimal outcome at the conclusion of the full treatment coursea recommended six to eight sessionswith a noticeable reduction in wrinkles and fine lines, body contouring and lifting of the treatment area, in addition to improved skin tone and texture.

The safety and efficacy of TriPollar treatments have been proven in multiple clinical studies and published in eight peer reviewed articles. A recent U.S. clinical study showed a 97% improvement following a full series of treatments, and 100% of the patients reported that they were satisfied with their results.

'Queen of anti-aging' takes her throne in new office

It is said with age comes wisdom. But with age also comes physical changes to the body that include difficulty losing weight, hormone imbalance, lack of energy and fine lines and wrinkles.

Known among her clients are the "queen of anti-aging," Dr. Jennine Cabanellas tackles these problems with her practice, the Wellington Wellness Institute. She uses a combination of external and internal rejuvenation practices to get her clients looking and feeling their best.

The practice, which has been open for five years, recently found a new home closer to its equestrian clientele at 13421 South Shore Blvd. in Wellington. Although the move did not offer more space it gave Cabanellas the opportunity to design the space from the floor up.

"It took us a while to get into the space," she said. "We are calling the office equestrian chic; everything is wood from the floor up and we have added little details. For example the doors are not regular doors but instead look like barn doors."

With the new location Cabanellas has added new menu options to her extensive anti-aging and wellness treatments. For example the Wellington Wellness Institute now has dietitian Shanith Coro on staff.

"He uses a very scientific approach to nutrition," she said. "Testing for food intolerances, heavy metals, amino acids and other issues of the GI."

The office also has a medical aesthetician, who specializes in a number of treatments, which allows clients to get the best results from facial peels and other anti-aging treatments, Cabanellas said.

She provides aesthetic rejuvenation services like botox and dermal fillers. Bio-identical hormone therapy, energy shots and medical weight loss programs also are available.

"Many of my patients are not sick," she said. "They are people who are looking for a better quality of life."

Cabanellas attended school at Columbia University, Harvard, University of Michigan and Washington University St. Louis, and is board-certified in ophthalmology, anti-aging medicine, aesthetic medicine and surgery.

Breakthrough Anti-Aging Skin Care Products Prolastil E-50 Featured in More Magazine

WILMINGTON, Del., Feb. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The products, marketed under the name Prolastil E-50, work by increasing the amount of elastin in the skin. The main cause of both wrinkles and facial sagging is the gradual loss of elastin in aged or photo-damaged skin. Elastin loss was previously thought to be irreversible. As an alternative to Botox, Prolastil has been shown by scientists at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia to enter into the outer skin layers and then become cross-linked with collagen and other proteins to expand the extra cellular matrix.

The Prolastil E-50 eye serum and skin cream is featured in this month's (March) issue of More Magazine, with comments from the prestigious Mamie's Skin Care Center, Manhattan, New York City.

As one of More Magazine's top 5 featured facialists, Ms. McDonald states on page 54, under "Best Eye Cream For All Colors", "Prolastil E-50 Eye Serum is a high-potency cream specially formulated for the thin, sensitive skin around the eyes."

Prolastil E-50 is carried by many leading skin care physicians and clinics. It is also available online.

Many of the professionals use these new products themselves, as found in the medicine cabinet of Dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, whose practice is in the Hamptons, Long Island, featured in the publication, Prevention. http://www.prevention.com/your-beauty/blog/inside-her-medicine-cabinet-dendy-engelman-md

PH stem cell society warns: Stem cells in some anti-aging procedures came from aborted babies abroad

MANILA The stem cells used in some anti-aging medical procedures here were harvested not from recipients themselves or donors but from elective abortion of human babies abroad, the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM) warned.

PSSCM spokesperson Dr. Leo Olarte said that in some procedures, the sources of the stem cells are babies and even the egg cells of women.

This practice poses ethical and moral questions, he said.

With this in mind and realizing that we can consider this as exploitation of other human beings for personal benefit, we ask ourselves if this is an ethical and moral medical procedure, he said.

Olarte said the entry of these stem cells in the country must be stopped.

We cannot stand by and merely watch how they exploit people in poverty just to profit while allowing others who are economically well off to benefit from this, he added.

In countries like the Ukraine, Switzerland, Russia, and even Malaysia, harvesting human fetuses for stem cell transplant has become so prevalent that even normal healthy babies are being used to generate the cells that are supposed to make older people look and feel younger, he said.
