Plandai Biotechnology, Inc. Announces Positive Anti-Malaria Test Results Using Phytofare™ Extract

SEATTLE, May 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Plandai Biotechnology, Inc. (PLPL), a producer of highly bioavailable plant extracts for industries including health, wellness, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical, today announced that the Company's Phytofare Catechin Extract has proven effective in killing the malaria parasite, plasmodium falciparum, in analytical tests developed by and conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sanjeev Krishna at the Division of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Centre for Infection, St George's, London School of Medicine.

In the study, the single and most dominant catechin - Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) - was isolated from Plandai's Phytofare extract and its effectiveness compared in killing the P. falciparum parasite against a purified EGCG extract. The results, which are expected to be published soon, showed that the Phytofare extract killed the parasite and with a lower dosage than the purified EGCG extract.

Roger Duffield, Chief Executive Officer of Plandai, commented, "These initial findings provide evidence corroborating previous scientific findings that Epigallocatechin Gallate catechin can kill the malaria parasite. This study involving Phytofare is the first to show the effectiveness of using a commercial botanical extract, rather than purified extract of EGCG catechin, as an anti-malarial.

"We believe these results validate our decade-long research into the opportunity for using botanical extracts as a means to combat one of the world's great plagues. Dr. Krisha's clinical data indicate that Phytofare extract has a stable platform with predictable outcomes, making it a suitable candidate for further investigations. We now have the opportunity evaluate the extract in further studies, including inhibiting the parasite in the glucose transporter and as a potential prophylactic by destroying the sporozoites during their journey from injection into the human blood by the female mosquito to the liver."

Plandai is finalizing agreements to undertake further in vitro and then mouse studies at the University of Cape Town, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, to further validate the antimalarial drug target through greater synergistic activity of the complete Phytofare catechin complex containing the total eight catechins, rather than the single isolated Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG).

Once all these results have been evaluated, the Company will submit its application with the US Food and Drug Administration to commence Phase II human clinical trials.

Each year, approximately 500 million people worldwide become infected with malaria. Of those infected, roughly 600,000 will die from the disease. The development of vaccine options has so far proved challenging due to the complexity of the parasite. In addition, drug-resistant strains of the parasite are moving across Southeast Asia, prompting the need to develop a new line of drug options.

Costa Rica: Where Medical Tourism Means Youth and a Luxury Vacation

(PRWEB) May 15, 2013

Imagine an escape to tropical beaches, lush rain forests and golden sun... to 1,000-thread count linens, gourmet cuisine and attentive service. Imagine an escape to beautiful, sunny Costa Rica. And now, thanks to legal and safe anti-aging HGH and hormone replacement therapy, you'll enjoy both the tropics and a new you.

The only thing that can make this vacation to paradise even more appealing is making it free and bundling it with the energy and vitality of youth and better overall health.

Dreams come true in Costa Rica. Medical tourists to this small, Central American nation enjoy not only cutting-edge technology and top-notch medical care (at 40-50% less than it would cost in the U.S.), but with the money they save, they can treat themselves to a luxurious getaway to one of the world's most spectacular tropical nations.

But, the question is, how do they comfortably enjoy a luxury vacation and save money when they've just had a hip or knee replacement, a face lift or are recovering from ten dental implants? The answer lies in a new, rapidly expanding sector anti-aging medicine, which has no treatment side effects and saves patients thousands of dollars by visiting Costa Rica, thereby enabling them to splash out on a free, luxury vacation.

What is Anti-Aging Medicine? Many people are already aware that Costa Rica is famous for traditional medical tourism plastic surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and otherwise high-cost procedures, like knee and hip replacements. But anti-aging medicine is beginning to take the Costa Rican medical tourism industry by storm.

And the Anti-Aging Institute of the Americas is leading the charge.

Now, Legal HGH and Hormone Replacement Offered in Costa Rica Founded by Dr. Leslie Mesen, a Costa Rican and U.S.-educated doctor, the Anti-Aging Institute offers a variety of treatments that not only turn back the clock visually, but actually restore the youth, energy and vitality enjoyed by the average twenty-something. Dr. Mesen explains, "Anti-aging is a new specialty that targets the wellbeing and overall health of middle-aged men and women. It's also an excellent option for seniors who really want to make their golden years shine. I always say that growing older is inevitable, but feeling old is a choice. At the Anti-Aging Institute, we empower our patients to choose youth. We walk them down the path to more active, more fulfilling lives, so they have the energy and stamina to enjoy the lifestyle they've worked hard to achieve.

At the Anti-Aging Institute, the premise is simple: as people age, their hormone levels plummet. Hormone replacement (testosterone for men, estrogen for women) and human growth hormone, or HGH, restores these levels to what they were during the peak of youth, reaping huge rewards for patients' mental vitality, energy, physique and overall health. And unlike in the United States, where the FDA has declared HGH illegal for off label use, such as for anti-aging purposes, HGH and hormone replacement therapy are completely legal in Costa Rica, which recognizes their positive effects and peoples' right to medically approved treatments.

At the Anti-Aging Institute, all patients are welcomed with personalized medical care, attentive staff, and state-of-the-art technology. The initial consultation at the Anti-Aging Institute begins with a full medical workup, followed by an interview with Dr. Mesen to develop a personalized treatment to restore every patient's hormone levels to optimal levels.

Puhua International Hospitals, Beijing: New Anti-aging Study

Beijing, China (PRWEB) (PRWEB) May 15, 2013

Puhua International Hospitals (PIHs)-Temple of Heaven (http://puhuahospital.com) (http://www.puhuachina.com) has been a leading international neuroscience and biotechnology center in Beijing, China, for the past 20 years. During that time, Puhua has built and maintained a dominant presence in Beijing in the areas of applied biotechnology, neurology, neurosurgery, medicine, cancer, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and surgery. PIH also has vigorous programs of Integrative Oncology and Diabetes.

Over the past decade Puhua International Hospitals-Temple of Heaven has made huge strides forward in applied cellular biotechnology (stem cell therapy, or SCT). Thus, in addition to its high level of diagnostic and therapeutic expertise, PIH has become a world leader in applied biotechnology, cellular science and applied stem cell technology.

It is in these areas of applied clinical research that remarkable progress is being made in the areas of: spinal cord repair; post-traumatic brain injury; cerebral palsy; Parkinsons disease; cerebral-vascular and cardio-vascular disease, and diabetes. By utilizing cellular/regenerative medicine and biotechnology at the time of surgical repair for spinal cord and brain injury, the neurosurgeons and clinical scientists at Puhua International are today redefining what is now possible in terms of recovery from neurological injury and disease.

Whereas traditional SCT utilizes donor cell-lines, newer technologies using autologous stem cells (meaning stem cell lines derived from the patients) are now also being successfully employed. Autologous cellular therapy is extremely safe and cost-effective for younger (under 40 years of age) patients with diagnoses such as: cerebral palsy, anoxic encephalopathy, autism, diabetes and many other conditions.

Puhua International Hospitals-Temple of Heaven, Beijing (http://puhuahospital.com) (http://www.puhuachina.com) is a Center of Excellence in neurology and neurosurgery as well as a leader on the frontier of applied cellular science and biotechnology.

James T. Quinlan, MD, is an American physician, trained at the University of Iowa, with a life-long interest and commitment to the subject of wellness, regenerative medicine and anti-aging. He is heading the initiative at Puhua International Hospitals (PIH)-Temple of Heaven to apply what has been learned in the past decade of applied stem cell science to the important and fascinating frontier of Anti-aging Medicine.

What is meant by old age? The concept of being old is quite relative. In fact, in a world of aging people, people who can now expect to live to 80, it becomes critically important to attempt to both better define the terms, and to lay out those elements that may be improved by current medical bio-technology. This imperative derives both from first principles: to attend to the health and happiness of the individual. However, since it is now possible to pre-empt many of the diseases of aging by cellular biotechnologies, it is time to re-examine and re-define what it means to age normally.

In other words, does the normal process of aging need to include the diseases of aging? Perhaps it does not, or at least not the way that it used to. Further, it is also necessary to look for ways to keep aging populations as healthy as possible. Not only is this the right thing to do, but we actually have no alternative. There is simply not enough carrying capacity (to use an environmental idiom) to sustain a planet over-populated by people who are sick and infirm from the diseases of aging.

So, what is aging, and what is meant by normal? What are the current options?

Scientists sequence genome of 'sacred lotus,' which likely holds anti-aging secrets

Public release date: 10-May-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Stuart Wolpert swolpert@support.ucla.edu 310-206-0511 University of California - Los Angeles

A team of 70 scientists from the U.S., China, Australia and Japan today reports having sequenced and annotated the genome of the "sacred lotus," which is believed to have a powerful genetic system that repairs genetic defects, and may hold secrets about aging successfully. The scientists sequenced more than 86 percent of the nearly 27,000 genes of the plant, Nelumbo nucifera, which is revered in China and elsewhere as a symbol of spiritual purity and longevity.

"The lotus genome is an ancient one, and we now know its ABCs," said Jane Shen-Miller, one of three corresponding authors of the research and a senior scientist with UCLA's Center for the Study of Evolution and the Origin of Life. "Molecular biologists can now more easily study how its genes are turned on and off during times of stress and why this plant's seeds can live for 1,300 years. This is a step toward learning what anti-aging secrets the sacred lotus plant may offer."

The research was published today in the journal Genome Biology.

Shen-Miller said the lotus' genetic repair mechanisms could be very useful if they could be transferred to humans or to crops such as rice, corn and wheat whose seeds have life spans of only a few years. "If our genes could repair disease as well as the lotus' genes, we would have healthier aging. We need to learn about its repair mechanisms, and about its biochemical, physiological and molecular properties, but the lotus genome is now open to everybody."

In the early 1990s, Shen-Miller led a UCLA research team that recovered a viable lotus seed that was almost 1,300 years old from a lake bed in northeastern China. It was a remarkable discovery, given that many other plant seeds are known to remain viable for just 20 years or less.

In 1996, Shen-Miller led another visit to China. Working in Liaoning province, her team collected about 100 lotus seeds most were approximately 450 to 500 years old with help from local farmers. To the researchers' surprise, more than 80 percent of the lotus seeds that were tested for viability germinated. That indicated that the plant must have a powerful genetic system capable of repairing germination defects arising from hundreds of years of aging, Shen-Miller said.

Understanding how the lotus repair mechanism works and its possible implications for human health is essentially a three-step process, said Crysten Blaby-Haas, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar in chemistry and biochemistry and co-author of the research. "Knowing the genome sequence was step one. Step two would be identifying which of these genes contributes to longevity and repairing genetic damage. Step three would be potential applications for human health, if we find and characterize those genes. The genome sequence will aid in future analysis.

"The next question is what are these genes doing, and the biggest question is how they contribute to the longevity of the lotus plant and its other interesting attributes," Blaby-Haas said. "Before this, when scientists studied the lotus, it's almost as if they were blind; now they can see. Once you know the repertoire of genes, you have a foundation to study their functions."

Puhua International Hospitals (PIHs): Soliciting Agents for World-wide Referral Network

Beijing, China (PRWEB) May 11, 2013

Puhua International Hospitals (PIHs)-Temple of Heaven (http://www.puhuahospital.com), (http://www.puhuachina.com) has been a leading international neuroscience and biotechnology center in Beijing, China, for the past 20 years. During that time, Puhua International has achieved a dominant presence in Beijing, China, in applied biotechnology, cellular biotherapy, neurology, neurosurgery, medicine, cancer, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and surgery.

Puhua International is the only international hospital in Beijing to routinely evaluate, treat and admit a wide range of international patients. In fact, Puhua International was one of the first of what are now known as medical tourism facilities in Asia, and the level of expertise and care for all international patients is currently unrivaled. Patients repeatedly report in quality-control surveys that the International Service Department at Puhua International is unrivaled for quality and outstanding level of no-problems service. Patients come to this hospital with diagnoses ranging from metabolic, genetic and genetic disorders to central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) injury and trauma; glioma; seizure disorders; cerebral palsy; Parkinson's disease and a wide range of neuropathic and myopathic disorders.

It is in these areas of applied clinical biotechnology that remarkable progress is being made at PIH in the areas of: spinal cord repair; post-traumatic brain injury; cerebral palsy; Parkinsons disease; cerebral-vascular and cardio-vascular disease, and diabetes. Other conditions managed at PIH include the management of difficult tumors and cancers, metabolic diseases and genetic disorders. By utilizing cellular/regenerative medicine and biotechnology at the time of surgical repair for spinal cord and brain injury, the neurosurgeons and clinical scientists at PIH are today redefining what is possible in recovery from neurological injury and disease.

Whereas traditional SCT utilizes donor cell-lines (for example, mesenchymal stem cells derived from donor placental cord blood), newer pathways using autologous stem cells (meaning stem cell lines derived from the patients own cells) are now also being successfully employed. Autologous stem cellular therapy is extremely safe and cost-effective for younger (under 40 years of age) patients with diagnoses such as: cerebral palsy, anoxic encephalopathy, autism, diabetes and many other problems.

Puhua International Hospitals-Temple of Heaven, Beijing (http://www.puhuahospital.com) (http://www.puhuachina.com) is thus a Center of Excellence in neurology and neurosurgery as well as a leader on the new frontier of applied stem cell science and biotechnology.

James T. Quinlan, MD, is an American physician, trained at the University of Iowa, with a life-long interest and commitment to the subject of wellness, regenerative medicine and anti-aging. He is heading the international initiative at Puhua International Hospitals (PIH)-Temple of Heaven. The goal is to apply what has been learned in the past decade of applied stem cell science to the important and fascinating frontiers of anti-aging/regenerative medicine, diabetes, heart failure and cancer as well as the range of neurologic, metabolic and genetic diseases.

It is toward the goal of expanding its world-wide referral base that Puhua International Hospitals (PIHs)-Temple of Heaven announces its request that serious and suitable candidates who are interested in serving as international referring agents to PIHs submit their Bio and/or CV to info(at)puhuachina(dot)com for evaluation and consideration. A pre-requisite to become a Puhua International Partner is a Bachelors Degree (or higher) and experience in a health-related field. Special consideration will be given to those candidates who possess medical backgrounds and/or experience. Valued attributes include a high level of inter-personal skills, facility with marketing concepts/experience and polished communication skills.

The Puhua International Partnership seeks greater presence in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, India, South East Asia and the U.K. All training and orientation for these positions will be undertaken and underwritten by Puhua International Hospitals (PIH)-Temple of Heaven. Individuals who are already positioned to understand stem cell science, and who are also in a position to reach out through their local and regional media to patients most likely to benefit from advanced cellular therapy are encouraged to contact us at info(at)puhuachina(dot)com.

After many treating many thousands of patients with mesenchymal stem cells, we know that this technique is safe and generally effective, and the stem cells themselves are the stars in this process. Their extremely low antigenicity coupled with their predilection to go to where they are needed, blend in with the hosts own (and older) stem cells and then go on to differentiate in harmony with these older cells makes the technical aspects of this process very straight-forward. Still, not every question has been answered. Thus, while offering an anti aging and many other stem cell therapies, Puhua International is also coupling these treatments to prospective clinical studies in the search to expand medical knowledge.

Dr. Meg Qayum Leads Prediabetes Treatment Center in Houston

Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 07, 2013

PreDiabetes Centers, the nationwide leader in customized prediabetes treatment, today announced the opening of a new location in Houston and the appointment of Dr. Meg Qayum to lead the treatment center. Dr. Qayum is a board-certified physician with many years of experience in treating chronic disease. As a prediabetes physician, she will direct medical care for patients enrolled in the Companys 12-month comprehensive treatment program.

Dr. Qayum specializes in integrative and functional medicine. She received her medical degree and residency training from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. She is a member of the Fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, the Institute for Functional Medicine, and the American College for Advancement in Medicine. Dr. Qayum served as the Wellness Director of Divinity Med Spa & Wellness where she used a combination of bioidentical hormone therapy and customized nutrition and fitness therapy to treat people with hormone imbalance conditions, including weight gain, loss of energy, low libido, stress and depression.

She will meet with clients at the PreDiabetes Center of North Houston at 13688 Breton Ridge Street, Suite F.

Dr. Qayum is excited about incorporating a multi-faceted approach to prediabetes care. This is the first program that looks at all contributing factors of the disease, she said, noting that the program uses continuous biomarker tests to ensure that individual markers of health are improving in conjunction with treatment.

Dr. Qayum says that people with prediabetes need targeted medical treatment in order to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

You cant treat a chronic disease on your own. [Prediabetics] need a team approach to help guide them through [treatment], said Dr. Qayum.

She notes that even if a person never progress to diabetes, he or she still has harmful conditions occurring in the body, such as inflammation, high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol levels, that can lead to long-term health problems. A comprehensive prediabetes treatment plan targets these underlying imbalances and can help reverse their devastating effects.

Dr. Qayum said that many factors contribute to a prediabetes diagnosis, but nutrition, in particular, is a serious problem.

People who are in their 30s and 40s were raised in a generation when soft drinks werent considered bad, says Dr. Qayum.

The Beauty of American CryoStem Now and in the Future

What can I do with my unwanted body fat? That is a question that is posed by American CryoStem (OTCQB:CRYO - News) on the home page of its website. There are plenty of finite resources in the world, but lets face it, body fat certainly isnt one of them. A little due diligence reveals the companys answer to that question, but a more discerning examination uncovers the true growth potential of American CryoStem from an immediate, mid-term and long-term perspective.

American CyroStem is pioneering uses for adipose (fat) tissue-based cellular technologies in the field of regenerative and personalized medicine, two industries that are likely to assume dominant roles in the future of health care. It should be recognized that the company is still a small firm with limited resources, but our discussions with chief executive and chairman John Arnone unveil a succinct business model and allocation of those resources to shepherd the company to a far greater vision and valuation.

Short Term Revenue

In the present, the company has started generating revenue through its network of physicians with ATGRAFT, a service for processing and storing adipose tissue for layered fat transfers and reconstructive procedures. Another attractive example of this type of present revenue is with Personal Cell Sciences (PCS), the maker of the upscale UAutologous line of stem cell-based skin care products, which delivers high margins for American CryoStem. The sales channel works through cosmetic surgeons, clinics and other organizations in the extensive PCS/CRYO network offering physicians different options to offer patients to use their adipose derived cells, cells that are loaded with human growth factors, cytokines and matrix proteins. American CryoStem receives the adipose tissue for processing and storage, adding one-time cash to its coffers for the processing services as well as recurring revenue for storage of the stem cells.

International Stem Cell Corporation (OTCBB:ISCO - News) offers a somewhat comparable product, Lifeline Skin Care. The Lifeline product relies on stem cells derived from unfertilized human eggs, and the company touts that their process insures minimal immune rejections and can be used by people of all genders, ages and racial backgrounds. American Cryostems approach goes one step further by using the patients very own stem cells as the basis for its products.

In April, the company penetrated the Asian markets through receipt of its first commercial shipment of adipose tissue for processing, long-term cryo-storage and formulation of the U-Autologous anti aging product, from Biomedical and Life Sciences Institute, a Hong Kong-based regenerative medicine company and distribution relationship of PCS.

While the U.S. markets are formidable as part of the $30.5 billion cosmeceutical industry, the Asian markets represent a substantial opportunity. A cultural shift is happening in major markets around the world. After centuries of repressing individualization, people are showing off their wealth with imported products, such as high-end cosmetics from the United States and Europe, being chic and symbolic of status.

Medium Term Growth

Additionally, American CryoStem is building out its cell culture medium offerings that have the potential to revolutionize the business. The current global medium of choice for culturing stem cells utilizes fetal bovine serum (FBS), and thats exactly as the name implies. FBS comes from bovine fetuses and, while generally accepted, there are ethical and biological arguments against the standard today. There has been talk for years of a dynamic shift to remove any trace of an animal component in the supply chain in specified risk materials in the European Union, not to mention the fact that human albumen based serums may be statistically superior to the fetal bovine serums.

American CryoStem has been awarded a series of patents with more pending on its proprietary formulation for non-animal based serums. With or without global initiatives mandating change, this aspect of the company offers a substantial upside in coming years as the biotechnology industry becomes more aware of benefits of the new medium. Simply, the company is at the forefront of the multi-billion-dollar business.

Scientists Discover a Brain Region That Controls Aging

Turns out that the elusive Fountain of Youth may exist after all in our heads.

Scientists at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine say theyve discovered a brain region that may control aging throughout the entire body. By manipulating that region, they were able to extend the lives of mice by 20 percent. The finding, detailed in a paper published in Nature on May 1, may lead to new ways of warding off age-related diseases and increasing life spans.

The hypothalamus, an almond-size area of the brain, controls growth, reproduction, and metabolism but also initiates aging, according to the study. Dongsheng Cai, a physiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, together with colleagues, realized this by tracking NF-B, a molecule that controls DNA transcription and is involved in inflammation and the bodily response to stress. They found that in mice, NF-B becomes more active in the hypothalamus with age.

Mice that were injected with a substance that inhibits NF-Bs activity lived longerup to 20 percent longerwhile those injected with a substance that stimulated the molecule died earlier.

Whats more, the inhibitor seems to block the lamentable physical decline that occurs with age. Six months after the initial experiment, mice that had been injected with inhibitors performed better than controls on cognition and movement tests. They also showed less age-related decline in muscle strength, skin thickness, bone mass, and tail-tendon integrity, according to an article in Nature.

Blocking NF-B had similar effects on male and female mice and produced anti-aging effects even in middle-aged mice.

David Sinclair, a molecular biologist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, called the study, a major breakthrough in aging research. He says it will likely benefit research into age-related diseases such as Alzheimers and arthritis.

Life Well Lived

In response to the growing medical tourism in Southeast Asia, Sofitel Philippine Plaza took the concept of the traditional spa to a whole new level by completely changing the game, with its recently opened health and aesthetic institute, the first inside a luxury hotel in the Philippines. "Vietura is actually a dream come true," said Dr. Mary Jane Torres, Vietura's chief practitioner and aesthetic medicine expert, during the media launch at Sofitel Philippine Plaza. "The name comes from the French word vie which means life, and natura for natural, because being healthy and beautiful should be something that's natural in life."

The facility brings a holistic approach to beauty and wellness by offering 100% non-invasive treatment programs that are tailor-made for each client. Available services range from weight management tools, to anti-aging procedures, cosmetic dentistry, facial contouring, and body sculpting. Treatments for conditions that affect one's complexion or digestion are also offered. The main philosophy of Vietura can be found in three spheres-aesthetic medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle coaching. Dr. Mary Jane has been doing non-invasive, non-surgical procedures for almost a decade, using state-of-the-art aesthetic technology and equipment. To complement these treatments, the center offers integrative medicine such as chelation, colonics, detoxification, hyper baric oxygen therapy, and hormonal treatments, which aren't traditional practices of medicine. "The difference between other clinics or hospitals that offer the same treatments, is that we integrate the practice of integrative medicine into our own aesthetics programs, such as colonics for our weight management and anti-aging programs. The results are better and more sustaining than surgical procedures."

Dr. Mary Jane also added lifestyle coaching, which provides guidance towards the building of one's self-esteem and self-empowerment, as well as setting and achieving one's personal goals, as an important aspect to truly having a healthy and well-balanced life for the long-term. An in-house lifestyle coach is available to help patients with their emotional issues and create a positive change for themselves, from the inside-out.

Aside from Dr. Mary Jane, Vietura's team of experts is also composed of renowned cosmetic dentist, Dr. Cecilia Infantado, life coach Lisa Tilstra, and nutritionist Agnes Tumaneng. The internationally-trained team also includes 12 registered nurses.

The interiors of the 400-sqm facility was designed by Manila-based interior design firm Gruppo Espazio, who have literally brought nature into the waiting rooms and treatment rooms through living, vertical gardens spread out on the walls. Diet, 'anti-aging' supplements may help reverse blood vessel abnormality

A diet low in grains, beans and certain vegetables combined with "anti-aging" supplements improved blood vessel function, in a study presented at the American Heart Association's Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology 2013 Scientific Sessions.

The blood vessel abnormality, or endothelial dysfunction, occurs when cells lining the interior wall of blood vessels malfunction. It's a serious condition that's often one of the first signs of heart disease.

Of the 200 51- to 86-year-old people in the study, 40 percent were women. All had risk factors for blood vessel disease and nearly three-quarters had endothelial dysfunction.

The diet restricted foods high in the sugar-binding protein lectin, generally regarded as a healthy nutrient. The restricted foods included grains, beans, fruit, poultry and plants belonging to the nightshade family, which includes tomatoes. At the same time, patients consumed plenty of leafy greens, shellfish and fish, olive oil and grass-fed animal protein, while taking supplements containing the antioxidant polyphenol from fish oil, grape seed extract and vitamins. Antioxidants are thought to slow cell aging.

"These findings represent a fundamental paradigm shift in how the diseases of the 'Western Diet' should be treated," said Steven R. Gundry, M.D., lead author and medical director of the International Heart & Lung Institute at The Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs, Calif. "Simple removal of 'healthy' lectin-containing foods, and taking a few inexpensive supplements, may restore endothelial function to normal, which in turn can reverse high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity."

Despite the study's findings, consumers shouldn't eliminate tomatoes or other healthy foods from their diets, said the American Heart Association, which recommends consuming a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish.

Dr. Dov Rand Launches New Programs

WEST ORANGE, N.J., April 29, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Dr. Dov Rand is proud to announce the introduction of multiple new services focused on improving the lives of his patients. Each new procedure and treatment is focused on transforming the health of women and men with diseases related to the aging process. The new procedures are a direct result of Dr. Dov Rand and his colleagues interest in functional medicine.

"Too often, western medicine focuses on the symptom and the symptom only. With functional medicine, we take a look at the patient as a whole. We want to treat the person and not just the problem they're seeking help for," says Dr. Dov Rand .

"We have launched programs specializing in different areas. Our new programs focus on weight loss, Yolo fat burning, and gut health programs. We also introduced programs for dysbiosis and food allergies," adds Dr. Dov Rand. Those were not the only programs introduced to Dr. Dov Rand 's medical office. Other programs recently introduced include bio-identical hormone replacement, vitamin therapy including IV vitamins, and Botox and fillers for facial rejuvenation.

"In all that we do, we focus on functional medicine. At the forefront of our practice is patient centered care. That is why we practice functional medicine. We've seen repeatedly how satisfied patients are with our practice. That is why I have personally received the Patient Recognition Award four consecutive years," says Dr. Dov Rand.

Patients seem to appreciate Dr. Dov Rand 's ability to restore balance to their lives and bodies. Many people notice differences about themselves as they age, and not all those differences are external. Dr. Dov Rand introduced all the new procedures to deal with imbalances or changes both internal and external. "Our treatments do work. I've treated several hundred patients and the results of treatment have been absolutely amazing," says Dr. Dov Rand .

Patients appreciate Dr. Dov Rand's ability to improve how they look and feel. If they want to restore a youthful appearance, they can choose Botox or another facial rejuvenation procedure. If they want to feel better, Dr. Dov Rand can help them determine what treatment they need.

Skin Tone – The Anti-Aging Market Focuses on Brighter Skin as the Epitome of Youth

A recently published Marie Claire magazine article highlights various foreign cosmetic markets and their approach to providing clear, even skin tone. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills says that the epitome of beauty is always changing and aesthetic practitioners must evolve to meet this challenge.

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 19, 2013

According to the article, smooth skin with no wrinkles or crow's feet is always highly valued, but skin without blemishes and that absorbs light may be even more highly regarded. When one is young and skin is at its pinnacle of health, melanocyte cells within the outer dermis supply pigment to the skins surface providing an even tone. With aging this production decreases, so that the remaining pigment clusters up instead of spreading smoothly. The global beauty industry is banking on reversing this trend.

In our medical practice at Epione, Id say that the focus is on wrinkle correction and skin tightening though we also use laser treatments to address skin tone issues, says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. My over-the-counter Signature Series Restoration Firm & Lift Crme was specifically created to address skin tone and clarity.

The Marie Claire goes on to describe efforts around the world to meet the demand for flawless, bright skin:

In China, the trend is to use holistic medicine. A white rose known as rosa roxburhii grows in the Chinese mountains and is packed full of the anti-oxidants that reportedly combat skin aging by attacking blotchy complexions and evening coloration. The French are using sugar structures to boost the strength of skin cells that produce spots when they receive too much melanin. Vitamin C derivatives are said to help the skin reflect more light and appear to be glowing.

Israeli dermatologists have used a compound rich in melanozyme, an enzyme developed from tree fungal growths that keep facial skin from developing the dark spots that lead to discontinuity in tone. In Japan whitening cultures are used to actively keep dark spots from producing. Kojic acid, for example, eliminates free radicals that lead to melanin production.

The ideal of beauty is ever changing and may be different from place to place and country to country, concludes Dr. Ourian. Its my job as a cosmetic practitioner to meet the aesthetic goals of my patients.

Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer in laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Juvderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. These treatments are used for the correction or reversal of a variety of conditions such as acne, acne scars, skin discoloration, wrinkles, stretch marks, varicose veins, cellulite, and others. More information about the rising concern over skin tone can be found on Epiones website.
