Google Wants Us to Live Forever So We Keep Clicking on their Ads

Faaame, Im gonna live forever. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

Forget fighting off the Grim Reaper with devout attendance at the local New York Sports Club and endless self-quantifying. Thats not moonshotty enough for Larry Page. Luckily, hes got the resources of an enormous American corporation at his disposal, which is how Calico, Googles new anti-aging initiative, came about.

This isnt like living through the prologue of a singularitariannovel, nope, not at all.

Timescored the exclusive, along with an interview with the spotlight-shy Mr. Page. The company will focus on health and aging in particular and be run independently by Apple chairman and former Genentech CEO Arthur Levinson. Given the turn medicine is taking toward information science, itd be a fair bet this will involve crunching numbers in search of the best strategies for life extension.

Ideally, if you have more people and more resources, you can do more things, get more things solved. Weve kind of always had that philosophy, Mr. Page explainedthe initiative. And by things solved, it sure sounds like he means death overthrown, or at least held off a lot longer. (And remember, Google also employsnoted death-doubter Ray Kurzweil, and bothSergey Brin and Mr. Levinson are personally involved inthe Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, another scheme to encourage life extension.)

Hey, living forever means looking at Google ads forever. ROI, baby! Not to mention that being a billionaire often breeds the kind of hubris that makes you think hey, why shouldntI be immortal?

For instance, takethis quote:

One of the things I thought was amazing is that if you solve cancer, youd add about three years to peoples average life expectancy, Page said. We think of solving cancer as this huge thing thatll totally change the world. But when you really take a step back and look at it, yeah, there are many, many tragic cases of cancer, and its very, very sad, but in the aggregate, its not as big an advance as you might think.

You know, it would be a cool little lifehack to cure cancer, but why not think BIGGER?

Just spitballing here, but maybe devote some dollars to the comparatively mundane cause ofdeveloping new antibiotics? It doesnt take big data to figure that one outyou just have to pay attention from the CDCs panicky dispatches.

Google launches Calico, an anti-aging company led by an Apple executive

Google is taking another moonshot and getting intohealthcare research, and they're doing it with the help of an extremely high-ranking Apple employee.

Today Google announced it's launching "Calico," a company focused on "health and well-being, in particular the challenge of aging and associated diseases." The initiative will be a long term "moonshot" project involving healthcare and biotechnology (Google basically wants to stop you from dying).

Since the company just launched, there aren't many details yet.The most interesting news is that the man running it isArt Levinson, the current chairman of both Genetech, another biotech company, and Apple. Yes,thatApple.Tim Cook even has a quote in the press release:

For too many of our friends and family, life has been cut short or the quality of their life is too often lacking. Art is one of the crazy ones who thinks it doesnt have to be this way. There is no one better suited to lead this mission and I am excited to see the results.

Levinson will keep his Chairman roles at Genetech and Apple while running Calico. That latter position he took after the death of Steve Jobs. According the Levinson, who just started up a Google+ page, "Calico" is an abbreviation for the "California Life Company."

As healthcare and technology become more and more intertwined, expect more crossover projects like this. Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle, recently started his own anti-aging company called "The Ellison Medical Foundation."There are a lot of very rich people out there that are getting older, and while it may seem like science fiction, "stopping death" is getting more and more money thrown at it. Google's Larry Page also invests in aresearch program through the Voice Health Institute, which is trying to solve his unknown vocal cord condition.

Some people will be alarmed by anything involving "Google" and "medicine" after Larry Page's flippant comments around HIPPA, but for now Calico seems to just be a research company. Plus, it's hard to decry anyone trying to cure diseases and help us all live longer.

UTHSC strikes licensing deal

The University of Texas Health Science Center and the Southwest Research Institute have licensed new uses for a drug that has shown it can slow the aging process to a San Antonio startup biotechnology company.

The company, Rapamycin Holdings Inc., takes its name from the drug rapamycin, which has long been federally approved to suppress organ rejection in transplant recipients.

Rapamycin Holdings hopes to one day commercialize the drug for anti-aging purposes.

Instead of accepting physical and cognitive decline, we're looking for answers and solutions, said Rapamycin Holdings CEO George Fillis. Hopefully, the answer will be to extend healthy human life.

Terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.

So far, Rapamycin Holdings has raised an undisclosed amount in seed funding to conduct a series of analytical tests to determine how the drug performs on a therapeutic level in the bloodstream, Fillis said.

The Texas Technology Development Center, or T3DC, and the Texas Research & Technology Foundation, are among the organizations that provided investment capital to the company.

Rapamycin Holdings plans to raise an additional $6 million once it nears Phase 1 clinical trials for its first drug product.

Z. Dave Sharp, a professor of molecular medicine at the health science center, in 2004 conceived the project to slow the aging process.

The federal government later awarded about $5 million in stimulus money to the health science center to study rapamycin and its anti-aging effects in mice.

The Best Berries For Your Health

By Angela Haupt for U.S. News

Indeed, they're "the ultimate anti-aging superfood," says registered dietitian Lauri Boone in her new book, "Powerful Plant-Based Super Foods." "They top the charts with their high levels of antioxidants and phytochemicals to keep your brain young, skin glowing, and reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer." Consider the health benefits of these nine berries, from acai to goji:

More From U.S. News: Green Smoothies 101: Health Benefits and Recipes Upgrade Your Health With These 7 Superfoods Seeds 101: A Guide, From Chia to Hemp

Acai Berries These, Boone says, are the anti-aging super berries. They're small, dark purple, and grow on the tall palm trees of South America. Acai berries are packed with 19 amino acids, an array of fatty acids, and an impressive number of cell-protecting antioxidants. In addition to boosting immunity and protecting against chronic diseases, acai berries are good for the heart and lower the risk of neurological diseases.

Blueberries Just call them the "blue dynamos." Blueberries are packed with manganese, which is an energy-boosting mineral; about 4 grams of fiber per cup; and vitamin K, which helps build bones. Research suggests that a blueberry-rich diet improves motor skills and helps fight diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Try tossing fresh blueberries into salads, smoothies, quinoa or baked goods.

Camu Camu Berries These small, red berries grow on tropical bushes in the Amazon rain forest. They offer a tangy taste and are packed with vitamin C, which explains why they're traditionally used to fight colds and the flu. They also help maintain healthy eyes, gums and skin, and play a role in strengthening the tendons and ligaments, Boone says. If you can't find them fresh, add a teaspoon of camu camu berry powder to juices, smoothies, and salad dressings.

Cranberries Turns out they're not just for Thanksgiving. Cranberries are infection-fighting super berries that ought to be enjoyed year round, Boone says. They're packed with a group of flavonoids called proanthocyanidins, which help lower the risk of urinary tract infections. Research also suggests they help keep the heart healthy and fight cancer. Try mixing fresh cranberries into smoothies, sprinkling the dried variety into oatmeal or baking them into muffins or breads.

Goji Berries If vitality is your aim, this is your berry. Chinese medicine practitioners commonly use bright red-orange goji berries to treat diabetes and high blood pressure, maintain eye health, and nourish the liver and kidneys. They're packed with vitamins C and E, along with carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene. Some research suggests goji berries help increase metabolism and boost energy levels. Try snacking on dry goji berries, or dropping a handful into trail mix, cereal, or salads.

Goldenberries These yellow-orange berries are a superfood for both energy and managing weight, Boone says. They're rich in vitamin B, protein and fiber, and research suggests they help regulate metabolism and keep you feeling fuller for longer. They also provide strong doses of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Fresh goldenberries aren't common outside South America, but the dried variety is available at most supermarkets.

Maqui Berries Photo: Flickr:Dick Culbert These small, purple berries, which grow in southern Chile, have been used to treat conditions from ulcers to fever. Maqui berries are high in heart-healthy flavonoids, and research suggests they might help prevent hardening of the arteries, while reducing inflammation in the blood vessels. There's also evidence they help regulate blood sugar levels. Sprinkle a teaspoon of maqui berry powder into oatmeal or quinoa, or add it to juice, smoothies, or sparkling water.

No such thing as ‘stem cell in a bottle’

By Cheche V. Moral Philippine Daily Inquirer

DR.MARK Berman of the California Stem Cell Treatment Center, Dr. LeoOlarte of the Philippine Medical Association, Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo and Dr. Z Teo of StemCare Institute Center for Pain and Regenerative Medicine

The Department of Health and some medical organizations are calling for a clampdown on hospitals, clinics and centers offering stem cell treatments. But instead of being discouraged, one of stem cell therapys vocal advocates and practitioners in the country said she welcomes the move.

At the launch of StemCare Institute Center for Pain and Regenerative Medicine, a new division of The Skin and Laser Clinic, Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo said she believes the procedure needs to be regulated.

The word stem cell has been used loosely, which is sad. So [the crackdown] is good in a way because we really need to regulate, said Dr. Aguilar-Teo, who, with her Singaporean physician husband, Z, owns and runs StemCare.

Theres this impression that all stem cell treatments are the same, which isnt the case. The techniques and sources of stem cells are different [from clinic to clinic].

The Teos clinic at Bonifacio Global City has been offering autologous fat stem cell repair (FSCR) for the last two years, and since last year has been offering treatments other than anti-aging.

Medicine is evolving and we dont want to be stagnant. We want to learn more, said Dr. Aguilar-Teo, who has had FSCR patients seeking help for sports injuries, autism, Parkinsons disease, among others.

With StemCare, weve created a team of an orthopedic surgeon, an anesthesiologist and pain specialist, a general and hair restoration surgeon. What were doing is more preventive

The growth hormone and testosterone myths

Testosterone and other anabolic steroids and growth hormone are not just about cheating and theyre not just a problem to be dealt with by Major League Baseball and other overseers of professional sports. The sale and prescribing of testosterone and other anabolic steroids and growth hormone are illegal for athletic use, body building and anti-aging, and for good reasons.

These drugs, when marketed and used for medically fallacious reasons, can cause financial, physical and psychological harm.

Many clinics that go by various descriptions ranging from anti-aging, age-management and wellness clinics and spas to life extension and longevity institutes cater to young men looking for drugs for body building and of course professional athletes looking for athletic performance enhancing drugs as well as more middle aged and relatively wealthy individuals succumbing to marketed pitches of youth, virility, and weight loss.

This is a cash only business (except for fraudulent insurance claims) because private and public insurers wont pay for these treatments that are viewed by endocrinologists as outside the scope of the reasonable, safe and legal practice of medicine.

One of the consequences of this being a cash only business is that the clinics, internet sites and compounding pharmacies are ineffectually regulated. Adverse medical events go unreported and some clinics obtain signed contracts stipulating that patients lose their rights to report adverse events or unprofessional behavior to regulatory agencies.

Testosterone in its various forms, including Androgel, can cause impulsive violent behavior and unpredictable rage and precipitate psychotic behavior and mania. One only needs to recall Charlie Sheens recent psychotic meltdown to see the profound and scary side effects of this drug. Chris Benoit, a famous pro-wrestler, killed his wife and son and then himself, while, like most other pro-wrestlers, he was taking what amount to toxic hormone soups or what the anti-aging industry euphemistically calls hormone replacement therapy.

There are dangerous physical side effects from testosterone as well, including obstructive sleep apnea, irregular heart beat (called atrial fibrillation, which increases the risk for stroke), and problems that all increase the risk for heart attack, including high blood pressure, increased blood viscosity, and very low good (HDL) cholesterol levels. Anabolic steroids taken by mouth, like Anavar, are additionally associated with markedly increased risk of inflammation of the liver and can lead to liver failure.

Over the past five years or so we have been deluged by pharmaceutical advertisements promoting testosterone injections, gels and creams to baby-boomers as the male fountain of youth. One anti-aging doctor states that all men as they get older require testosterone supplementation. According to less conflicted experts, somewhere between 2-18 percent of men have age-related declines in testosterone levels and coexisting clinical problems that merit testosterone supplementation even in the face of testosterones significant risk profile.

A study appearing this year in the Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that by 6 months of treatment, only about one third of 15,400 men stuck with their testosterone gel and by one year, the rate was down to only 15 percent. Maybe the vast majority of the men who succumbed to the marketing blitz realized it wasnt worth it or they sustained adverse effects.

Statins may also help slow human ageing

Washington, August 30 : Researchers have suggested that statins protect against DNA shortening by telomerase activation and promote healthy aging free of age-related diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer

Specifically, statins may reduce the rate at which telomeres shorten, a key factor in the natural aging process.

This opens the door for using statins, or derivatives of statins, as an anti-aging therapy.

Giuseppe Paolisso, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Internal Medicine, Surgical, Neurological Metabolic Disease and Geriatric Medicine at Second University of Naples in Naples, Italy, said that by telomerase activation, statins may represent a new molecular switch able to slow down senescent cells in our tissues and be able to lead healthy lifespan extension.

To make this discovery, Paolisso and colleagues worked with two groups of subjects. The first group was under chronic statin therapy, and the second group (control), did not use statins.

When researchers measured telomerase activity in both groups, those undergoing statin treatment had higher telomerase activity in their white blood cells, which was associated with lower telomeres shortening along with aging as compared to the control group.

This strongly highlights the role of telomerase activation in preventing the excessive accumulation of short telomeres.

The new research has been published in The FASEB Journal.

Results Show DermaPen Micro-Needling Facial Rejuvenation Combined with Plasma Rich Platelets (PrP) Dramatically …

San Jose, Costa Rica (PRWEB) August 27, 2013

A new cosmetic procedure has come to Costa Rica with a way to rejuvenate the skin, specifically ones facial dermis.

DermaPen, with 11 microscopic needles are at the heart of a new procedure called Micro-Needling. Both young and old are opting for this new procedure globally for many important reasons. Some do it for rejuvenating sun-damaged skin, others for vanity purposes only. Nevertheless, the results are real and patients can achieve significant improvements to their facial appearance with zero downtime. The procedure is fast and only takes about an hour to complete. The Anti Aging and Wellness Clinic in Escazu now offers the procedure under the leadership of Dr. Leslie Mesen.

DermaPen procedures work by attaching fine needles to a device not much larger than a writing pin. The device uses an electronic piston action which rapidly vibrates up and down pushing the needles into the dermis. The needles are very tiny micro-needles, so little pain is felt and the procedure is very safe. The piston action of the micro-needle device is moved about the face and neck at various speeds and depth, depending on the area treated, creating precision micro injuries to the dermis. As the dermis heals, it creates more collagen resulting in smoother more youthful looking skin. Best of all, it comes without the recovery time required from laser treatments or acid peals.

An amazing part of a DermaPen procedure is it may be combined with Plasma Rich Platelet (PrP) therapy. Plasma Rich Platelets or PrP is a process of taking approximately 60cc of a patients own blood and putting into a Harvest PrP machine. This Harvest Machine is now in used at the Anti Aging and Wellness Clinic in Costa Rica, which is one of only a few units used for this type of treatment. The process works by separating the Plasma Rich Platelets from the patients own blood into a liquid which can be brushed on to the patients face and neck prior to micro-needling.

Dr. Mesen, Chief Medical Officer of the Anti Aging and Wellness Clinic says, Plasma Rich Platelets are fundamental to the bodies healing process, which makes this procedure so revolutionary for facial rejuvenation. It is, in fact, so powerful, that many treatment centers and physicians around the world are now expanding it to treat knee injuries, like meniscus tears, as well as back injuries, said Mesen.

After the Plasma Rich Platelets are separated from the patients blood, they are painted or swabbed onto the face. The procedure is extremely sterile, and resulting in the Plasma Rich Platelets being pressed down into the dermis as the doctor moves the DermaPen across the face. Then the body takes over, and the plasma rich platelets go to work to heal the microscopic holes made by the needles. Essentially the PrPs begin acting as if they are magnetic by attracting the bodys own healing mechanisms to the area under treatment, creating a chemical response deploying powerful healing power to the desired area.

Whats next is even more fascinating. As these platelets go to work, more facial collagen and fibrin (which bind the collagen) form a smoother, more uniform and ultimately a more youthful appearance. Results are seen almost immediately. The whole process costs slightly more than a typical Botox or filler procedure, but the results are really going to come from ones own healing power, not from a foreign chemical entering the body. Essentially, the technology tricks the body to heal itself which truly pushes the science of anti-aging and age management medicine to another level.

A DermaPen needle will go up and down into the skin at more than 150 times per minute, feeding it with the richest part of the patients own plasma platelets through the microscopic tiny holes made as the DermaPen piston rapidly vibrates tiny micro-needles across the skin, says Dr. Lesele Mesen. Its like microdermabrasion at 10X power, and without down time, results are amazing, Mesen emphasizes.

In only a few weeks, patients end up with a more youthful healthy complexion. The process is part of a longevity maintenance process and should be done three to four times a year. Minimally, at least two times a year. Patients that follow through with healthy eating habits, proper skin cleansing and good skin care can expect to see fantastic results for years to come.

Doctor Utilizes Stem Cell Extracts with Promising Results

(PRWEB) August 30, 2013

Dr. Ann J Peters, internationally recognized anti-aging specialist, has found significant success utilizing liquid stem cells for both the rejuvenation of damaged organs and for general anti-aging purposes. The liquid stem cells come from a frozen stem cell extract that is consumed orally. This comes as good news to millions of people around the world seeking the latest in medical science to help in the recovery process and to mitigate the negative effects of aging.

Stem cells represent probably some of the most promising innovations in medicine today, said Dr. Peters. It is one modality in the emerging medical arsenal towards improved health and regeneration. Anyone can benefit from liquid stem cells, from young children to adults.

Stem cell research has expanded exponentially in recent years, as researchers across the globe continue to discover exciting new applications. Entire industries have blossomed around the use of stem cells, notably its use in sports medicine. Clinicians continually discover new uses for stem cells, from the repair of damaged or failing organs, damaged tissue, and diseases, such as Type I diabetes. The list of treatable conditions continues to grow.

A growing trend among parents involves the storage of embryonic cord blood. The umbilical cord of a newborn contains a large amount of the babys own stem cells, which can be effectively stored for future use. The efficacy of such a venture proves critical in neurological injuries resulting from brain damage from car accidents.

Dr. Peters recently visited a clinic in Switzerland that utilizes similar liquid stem cells extracts to the ones she uses in her practices in San Francisco, New York and Palm Beach. She is very hopeful about the powerful developments in stem cell technology to help patients recover from illness or injury, and for healthy aging.

SkinPro Targets the Thriving OTC Diet Pill Market With the Release of Tepamine

MIAMI, Aug. 21, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SkinPro is well known for recent innovations in skin care technology such as the new and revolutionary use of a peptide that mimics the effects of paralyzing viper venom on wrinkles and a tremendously popular syringe dispensed eye serum that has quickly become the #1 Best Seller on Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer. A new and potent weight loss and anti-aging pill called Tepamine, is no exception to the pattern of innovation that both industry observers and customers have come to expect from SkinPro. Dispensed in a soluble pill form, Tepamine is a potent hydrochloride based formula that is primarily comprised of a high concentration of Norcoclaurine HCL, Yohimbine HCL and Synephrine HCL.

Norcoclaurine HCL, also known as Higenamine, boosts the heart rate and induces Lipolysis, which is the process where fat is freed up and used for energy. Norcoclaurine has been used for hundreds of years in traditional medicine. Yohimbine HCL is an active chemical found in yohimbe tree bark. It raises metabolism and increases blood circulation by increasing noadrenaline. It also targets Alpha-1 receptors and signals them to stop holding onto fat. Alpha-1 receptors are most commonly located in areas where stubborn fat is difficult to lose such as the belly and hips. Synephrine HCL is an alkaloid extract of bitter orange peels. It is structurally similar to ephedrine and it also acts as an adrenergic (adrenaline-like) stimulant. Synephrine HCL has the ability to speed up your metabolism without making you feel jittery or nervous because it stimulates only beta-3 receptor and not the other receptor sites. Furthermore, Synephrine HCL has been shown to also suppress the appetite and boost energy.

SkinPro CEO Tim Schmidt states, "We spent over 3 years researching and perfecting this formula. Leveraging our dominance in skin care and anti-aging, we created what we know will ultimately be referred to as the strongest, most effective OTC weight loss product on the market. With obesity reaching epidemic proportions in this country and throughout most of the world, that consumers truly need. It has been carefully designed with our unique and proprietary three-pronged mechanism of weight loss to function as an appetite suppressant, fat blocker and metabolic driver. We hope that this will help consumers burn that extra fat, even in those places that they think are impossible to reach. Not wanting to stray too far from our core fundamentals, we have designed and integrated a world class and vital anti-aging blend that will help turn back the clock from the inside out. The early feedback we've received from our beta testers so far is nothing short of astounding."

Book Review: Hypnosis, Hormones, and the Adventures of Anti-aging

by Joanne Latimer on Friday, August 16, 2013 2:00pm -

Here at Maclean's, we appreciate the written word. And we appreciate you, the reader. We are always looking for ways to create a better user experience for you and wanted to try out a new functionality that provides you with a reading experience in which the words and fonts take centre stage. We believe you'll appreciate the clean, white layout as you read our feature articles. But we don't want to force it on you and it's completely optional. Click "View in Clean Reading Mode" on any article if you want to try it out. Once there, you can click "Go back to regular view" at the top or bottom of the article to return to the regular layout.

Counterclockwise: My Year Of Hypnosis, Hormones, Dark Chocolate, And Other Adventures In The World Of Anti-Aging

By Lauren Kessler

This just in: regular exercise and a healthy diet are good for you. Kesslers book offers these hot tips, and more, presented as confirmed findings throughout her personal mission for a more youthful existence. But before anyone can dismiss the book as the 230-page diary entry of a neurotic boomer, Kessler delivers an engaging romp through the medical and aesthetic temptations facing anyone concerned with how and when they will wizen.

Kessler begins by assuring us, and herself, that we can control about 70 per cent of how we age. Genes, she learns from reading studies, determine only 30 per cent of the outcome (although some gerontologists think we have a self-destruct program pre-set in our DNA). The hope of controlling that 70 per cent is what fuels the $88-billion anti-aging industry, including the controversial American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Kessler attends medical conferences to learn about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, hyaluronic acid, CoQ10 and other trends. She discovers how biomarkers determine the bodys real age. She is introduced to telomeres to protect DNA (possibly) and she gets a muscle biopsy to test her mitochondrion. She also does a 14-day detox, then tries superfoods, including raw diets and calorie restriction. Those last two make her crabby.

Kesslers likability and talent for self-disclosure wont prevent critics from going at her methodology, which is scattershot at best. To be fair, Kessler is the first to admit her random approach to health claims, which eventually starts to undermine her credibility. When reporting the benefits of the hip aai berry, for example, she makes no mention of The New Yorkers famous expos on those health claims. And where are the footnotes? Her favourite studies are often 20 years old. A regular reader of the New York Times health section wont find anything new in this book, but they might find a girlfriend with a sense of humour about our frantic vanities at middle age.
