According to new research, exercise may prove to be the best kept anti-aging secret for youthful skin. We have long appreciated the benefits of regular exercise on our heart, brain, bone and muscle, but now it appears that exercise may also keep your skin youthful as well.
Facial aging and skin deterioration are the undeniable rites of passage with aging. With time, the skin ages with the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity and textural changes.
Despite the certainty of these changes, scientists are still unsettled on the causes. Over the past decade there has been a shift in our understanding of the causes of facial aging. What we once thought was a process of stretching and sagging, we now know has much more to do with deflation and deterioration.
Using powerful microscopes to magnify skin and wrinkles and better understand the cellular changes underpinning aging, detailed scientific surveys have shown that all layers from the deep subcutaneous tissues (bone, fat, muscle) to the soft tissue matrix of the dermis and epidermis (including collagen and elastin fibres) deflate and deteriorate as we age.
The loss of structural support leads to deflation and the appearance of deep folds and those infamous jowls. While these living skin layers thin dramatically, the outermost layer, the stratum corneum, comprised of dead cells, grows thicker. As a result, aging skin becomes more coarse, dehydrated and lax.
Researchers from McMaster University have found that in mice models, regular exercise has been shown to stave off and reverse the signs of early aging. As compared to sedentary mice, those given access to running wheels maintained healthier brains, hearts, muscles, reproductive organs and fur over a longer period of time.
The active mices fur did not grey and they did not develop furrows and wrinkles. In mice, exercise was having a beneficial impact on preventing and reversing common signs of aging.

About 30 per cent of the new aesthetic medicine clinics were closed down within two years due to a furious price war and constant medical disputes, the Chinese Society of Cosmetic Surgery and Anti-Aging Medicine (CSCSM) announced yesterday.
Since its establishment 20 years ago, the CSCSM reviews the current situation and development of Taiwan's cosmetic surgery industry, especially the development of aesthetic medicine clinics in recent years.
Dermatologist Sung Feng-yi said that opening an aesthetic medicine clinic requires at least NT$10 million (US$328,000) to cover a renovation of the premises and the purchasing of all medical equipment.
However, even if the clinic owner spends extra on promoting the clinic, most of the clinics cannot survive for more than two years, said Sung.
According to Sung, the operation of new aesthetic medicine clinics is getting more difficult as a result of competitive pricing and commercials on TV.
Some aesthetic medicine clinics even hired inexperienced doctors who recently graduated from medical schools, which caused medical disputes and decreased the degree of confidence the public has in the industry, said Sung.

Liquid facelifts rank as the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in the nation, an accomplishment overshadowed as the demand for Botox and fillers has triggered a rise in illegal injectables (1), despite repeated warnings of the associated risks. Dr. Cynthia Elliott, owner of nonsurgical cosmetic facility Skinspirations, says that liquid facelifts can offer dramatic improvements in the skin, but urges potential patients to be especially cautious and seek only the help of qualified practitioners.
Liquid facelifts, a process during which injectable treatments such as Botox and dermal fillersincluding Juvderm, Restylane, Radiesseare used to restore youthful facial proportions, have grown in popularity due in large part to their effectiveness, versatility and accessibility. Unlike a surgical facelift, a liquid facelift typically takes less than an hour, requires no sedation and little or no downtime, and results become apparent almost immediately. But along with the increasing demand for Botox and fillers has come a rise in illegal injectables, prompting the FDA to issue an ongoing alert for unlicensed Botox that is shipped in from other countries (1).
Dr. Elliott says that some of her clientele have been the recipients of such unauthorized products and have turned to her for corrective proceduresan unsurprising statement, as a reported 84 percent of people who suffered complications from permanent dermal fillers required corrective action (2). But some of consequences of botched procedures are impossible to repair, per Dr. Elliott:
A client of mine had fillers in her cheeks done at another practice several years agoshe doesnt know what substance was used, and her cheeks are so large now that her dentist had difficulty getting her to open her mouth enough for a treatment. I administered a medication that would have dissolved it if it had been a hyaluronic acid filler like Juvderm or Restylane, but there was no response; its likely that the filler was permanent and, therefore, nothing can be done to remove it besides cutting it out.
Dr. Elliott says that the number of botched cosmetic procedures is likely due to people allowing the price to dictate the quality of the surgerya move that she says increases the chances of attracting unqualified physicians.
An experienced practitioner should be the top consideration when seeking any cosmetic procedure, not bargain hunting, said Dr. Elliott. Rather than blindly putting trust in those who claim to be in the medical profession, its up to the public to be proactive about their health and do extensive research before committing to any type of procedure.
Dr. Elliott says the risks associated with liquid facelifts and other cosmetic treatments can be limited by adhering to the following:
1.Check the FDA website which contains a list of approved fillers and providers. Botox and Juvderm manufacturer Allergan also posts pictures and a list of legitimate providers on its site. Ask the practitioner if they are a legitimate provider and if they can show credentials.
2.Botox containers for the use of cosmetic alterations always contain the word cosmetic. Boxes and vials missing the cosmetic label are not approved for cosmetic use in the United States; do not allow these products to be administered. And do not be afraid to ask to see the box from the practitioner; if you are made to feel wrong for doing so, be cautious.

New research suggests higher levels of hormones can reduce the effect of the body's natural defences against diseases.
The study by scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York found that those in their 90s with naturally low levels of the hormone had a much better chance of living into their 100s than those with above-average levels.
Anti-ageing hormones are a billion dollar industry based on the theory that replenishing hormones, which disappear naturally as you grow older, will restore youth.
The hormones that are administered are mostly human growth hormone (HGH) which makes the body develop another hormone called insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and dehydroepiandrostersone (DHEA).

I havent yet had a patient approach me with questions about the anti-aging properties of copper, says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Medical Corporation, but its only a matter of time. Reports like this tend to generate a lot of buzz. I read an article last year touting the miracle properties of gold dust and the fantastically expensive spa treatments and creams that incorporated it and havent heard another word about gold dust since.
According to Harpers, even doctors that are typically skeptical are singing the praises of copper's ability to reverse the clock. Copper supposedly helps to develop collagen and elastin, both of which maintain skin strength, and it promotes the production of hyaluronic acid, which plumps up the skin. Copper also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, both of which assist in the prevention of infections. Since the 1960's, copper has been used in skin wound care, and it is now showing promise for the treatment of acne.
The article goes on to report that a Virginia-based copper technology developer has marketed a pillowcase embedded with tiny copper particles. According to the manufacturer, microscopic particles are actually absorbed by the skin while one sleeps leading to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Other companies are adding copper peptides to hair care products to improve texture, shine, and volume.
I practice evidence-based medicine, continues Dr. Ourian, and there simply isnt enough rigorous scientific data to back up all these claims. Until that work is done and there is real evidence to back up the hype, I will refrain from recommending copper as an anti-aging ingredient in creams or pillowcases to my patients.
