Organic transplant horrors: Diseased organs routinely implanted into donation recipients

(NaturalNews) Matthew Millington, 31, was an Iraq war veteran who served in the British army. Suffering from an unspecified "serious long condition", doctors told him he would be dead in two years unless he underwent a lung transplant. With tens of thousands of people world-wide awaiting organ transplants, the young man was one of the "lucky" patients who soon received his lungs from a donor. The problem was he was given lungs riddled with a fast growing cancer -- and Millington died less than 10 months after his operation.

This is just a horrible, rare, mistake right? Not necessarily, according to a warning just issued by the UK health service. It specifically lists other examples of diseased and damaged organs being inappropriatedly donated for transplantion -- in addition to cancer, these include "fatty" organs, which can be caused by a donor's obesity or alcoholism and result in cirrhosis in a transplant patient, and organs containing cuts and other damage resulting from the organ retrieval process. Most horrific was a report of a donor patient found to be infected with vCJD, the human form of mad cow disease, as well as hepatitis B. In addition, the report notes problems with patient identification errors and incorrectly matched tissue types. Read more...

Can Coffee Cut Your Breast Cancer Risk?

A recent study suggests drinking coffee may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women with a family history of the disease.

Researchers monitored 1,690 women in four countries. Women who consumed at least six cups of caffeinated coffee a day had a 70 percent lower risk; those who had four to five cups a day had a 25 percent reduced risk and those who drank one to three cups a day had a 10 percent reduced risk. No benefits were recorded in decaffeinated coffee drinkers.

Please, don't interpret this as an excuse to hit your local coffee shop for a super-sized caffeine kick. Coffee studies tend to conflict quite a bit. Consumption may also impede your body's ability to keep homocysteine and cholesterol levels in check, likely because they inhibit the action of folate and vitamins B12 and B6. Read more...

Studies Uncover Genes Boosting Type 2 Diabetes Risk

(HealthDay News) -- Scientists have found several new genes that appear to increase the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Researchers say these findings bring to 10 the number of genes suspected in increasing the odds for type 2 diabetes, the most common, obesity-linked form of the disease. Understanding how these genes contribute to the disorder may lead to new strategies for prevention and treatment. The studies appear in the April 26 online editions of Nature Genetics and Science.

"This is clearly a start in understanding the disease," said Dr. Larry Deeb, president for medicine and science at the American Diabetes Association. "Type 2 diabetes is multifactorial, there is not one gene associated with it, and yet we know it runs in families, so it has to be genetic."

Deeb is not sure how much the genetic risk adds to the propensity for developing the disease. Either having or not having the genetic risk is not a guarantee of getting or not getting the disease, he added. Read more...

Popular Bone Drugs Linked to Reduced Colon Cancer Risk

(HealthDay News) -- People who take drugs called bisphosphonates to prevent bone loss may also reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer by almost 60 percent compared to those not on the drugs, a new study suggests.

Bisphosphonates include such common drugs as Fosamax (alendronate), Boniva (ibandronate), Actonel (risedronate) and Reclast (zoledronic acid). These drugs work by increasing bone thickness, thereby reducing the risk of fractures, the researchers said.

In prior studies, bisphosphonates have already been shown to be associated with a reduced odds for breast cancer.

"These [new] findings are meaningful because they point to a possible protective effect of this class of drugs being relevant to prevention of many different cancers," said lead researcher Dr. Gad Rennert, from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Faculty of Medicine and chairman of the department of community medicine and epidemiology at the Carmel Medical Center of Clalit Health Services in Haifa, Israel. Sodium Bicarbonate In The Prevention and Reversal of All Dis-Ease

Over the last decade Dr. Ralph Moss, at the University of Arizona has been researching the use of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as a potential treatment for cancerous conditions.

At the same time Robert J. Gillies and his colleagues have demonstrated that pre-treatment of mice with sodium bicarbonate results in the alkalinization of the area around tumors. (Raghunand 2003)

Using sodium bicarbonate in the treatment of a cancerous condition has been found to "enhance the anti-tumor activity" of other anticancer drugs. The alkalizing effects are very similar to the recently published research of injecting O2 directly into tumors where such direct administration of oxygen also facilitated the action of chemotherapy.

This year the same researchers reported that sodium bicarbonate increases tumor pH (i.e., make it more alkaline) and also inhibits spontaneous metastases (Robey 2009). They also showed that oral sodium bicarbonate increased the pH of tumors and also reduced the formation of spontaneous metastases in mice with breast cancer. Oral administration of sodium bicarbonate also reduced the rate of lymph node involvement. Read more...
