The risk of a heart attack is on your plate

By Jonathan Landsman

Do you want to dramatically change the course of your life? I'm talking about avoiding a massive heart attack, ineffective stent procedures or (painful) bypass surgeries. Believe it or not, you CAN unclog arteries, lower blood pressure and improve your circulation by simply eating a better diet.

It's time to update medical wisdom

In 1967, the first coronary bypass surgery was performed and everybody thought it was a "miracle" in medicine. Of course, 10 year later, the (less invasive) angioplasty was created but couldn't prevent a heart attack. By 1987, the use of stents lowered the demand for bypass surgery with NO reduction in the risk of a heart attack.

Modern medicine doesn't get it! You can NOT fix a biochemical problem - like heart disease with a mechanical (surgical) solution. By 1990, Dr. Dean Ornish, a world-renowned internist popularized the fact that anyone can reverse coronary heart disease with simple changes to diet, exercise and stress management habits. Doctors must upgrade their thinking process. Read more…

Anti-Aging Medicine: Amelia’s Look Into A Medical Controversy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Would you like a little extra energy? Most people would.

Thats why coffee shops and supplements are all so popular. But when I started having insomnia and feeling run down and irritable, I knew I needed more than a cup of coffee.

At first, I thought it was early menopause, or worse. It turns out, many women in their 30s and 40s have similar symptoms of weariness and irritability.

The solution I found not only has me feeling more energetic and stronger; it also opened my eyes to a growing controversy in womens medicine.

At first, I turned to Bonnie Erickson, a friend, who suggested I see an anti-aging doctor who had worked wonders for her.

Immediately I felt as though things were different, she said. I felt like I had my quality of life back.

Shes been seeing Dr. Khalid Mahmud for eight years. And after disappointing results with traditional medicine, she swears by his combination of holistic treatments and natural hormones.

I just think its a more natural approach, Bonnie said. Its more of a preventative approach.

Over the years, shes convinced most of her family, including her husband and two of her daughters, to see Mahmud.

One of her daughters, Keri Fuqua, had symptoms similar to mine. She also said her treatment with Mahmud was successful so successful that I couldnt help thinking that I needed to see him myself.

Health Buzz: Panel Recommends Against Prostate Screening

Panel Advises Against Routine Prostate Test

Men shouldn't be screened for prostate cancer with a common blood test, a federal advisory panel recommended Monday. In its new guidelines for prostate cancer screening, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force urged doctors not to use the popular PSA test to detect the disease. At best, it only helps about 1 in 1,000 men avoid death from prostate cancer, the panel said. And most of the cancers it detects are slow-growing, not life threatening, and will not cause a man any harm during his lifetime. Plus, testing often leads to treatment that leaves men incontinent, impotent, or both. The guideline isn't a mandate, however; men who want a PSA test can still get one, but only after their doctor explains the uncertainties, the Associated Press reports. In an editorial published with the guidelines in the Annals of Internal Medicine, some urologists argued that the panel underestimated PSA's value while overestimating its harms. "What PSA screening offers the men is a substantial opportunity to avoid dying a particularly unpleasant death from prostate cancer," said editorial co-author William Catalona of Northwestern University, who pioneered the testing.

Watch Out for Unproven Anti-Aging Treatments

The anti-aging industry is booming. Twenty years ago, there was no such thing as an "anti-aging" or "longevity" clinic. Today, many major cities house dozens.

Step inside one, and you'll likely encounter an assortment of remedies ranging from multivitamin cocktails to hormone injections to miracle pills that, if you believe the pitches, will guarantee you youthful entry into the triple digits.

There's just one wrinkle. Although often lucrative for physicians, evidence suggests that many of the treatments anti-aging doctors tout don't actually workand some may be downright dangerous. "You really have to be careful," says Loren Schechter, chairman of the patient safety committee for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "There are a lot of extravagant claims out there that simply don't check out when you look at the science."

Consider vitamins and supplements, for example. Most are harmless and possibly helpful in moderate doses, but a growing body of evidence shows that in excess, they can cause problems. Getting too much vitamin A, for example, has been linked to osteoporosis, vitamin B to nerve damage, and vitamin E to cancer. [Read more: Watch Out for Unproven Anti-Aging Treatments]

Vitamins and Supplements: Do They Work?

Vitamins and dietary supplements are bigmore than 110 million Americans forked over a collective $28 billion in 2010 on little bottles of would-be health magic. Research is unclear, however, on whether shoring up your diet with extra vitamins, minerals, and other supplements helps or hurtsin the short run or in reaching for the century mark.

For more than a decade, for example, researchers followed more than 35,000 men enrolled in SELECT, a clinical trial designed to see whether taking selenium and vitamin E might help prevent prostate cancer. In 2008, study participants received phone calls and letters: Stop the pills. Not only was the answer "no," but vitamin E apparently increased the chance of prostate cancer, if very slightly, and selenium seemed to do the same to diabetes risk. Later the same year, researchers from the Physicians' Health Study-II reported that neither vitamin E nor vitamin C reduced the chances of major cardiovascular problems or cancer as hoped.

Omega-3 fats from fish oil and supplements prevent and slow arthritis progression

Humans have been consuming omega-3 fats from natural fish, nut and seed sources for countless generations. Our core genetic structure depends on a regular supply of the long chain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA to form cell wall structures and perform millions of metabolic functions that we normally associate with vibrant health. Imbalance of omega-3 to omega-6 fats cause a surge in inflammatory cytokines that can lead to the painful and debilitating condition known as osteoarthritis. New research published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage has shown for the first time that omega-3 fats supplied by fish oil could "substantially and significantly" reduce the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis as we age. Doctor-Patient Talk May Help Blacks With Hypertension

(HealthDay News) -- Black patients with high blood pressure often seem to struggle to communicate with their doctors, potentially leading to worse disease outcomes, a North Carolina study suggests.

"It seems that in general, blacks talk less overall to their physicians than white patients," study author Dr. Crystal Wiley Cene, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, said in a university news release. "As a result, communication about specific topics occurs less often."

Cene noted that there may be several reasons for the poor communication. Black patients might not trust their physicians or somehow feel disconnected from them. Physicians, perhaps reacting to their quiet patients, may feel less inclined to talk to them.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from 226 high blood pressure patients and 39 physicians at 15 primary-care practices in Baltimore. Specifically, they listened to audio recordings of patients' visits to their doctors. The study authors noted the length of the visits, the number of medically focused statements made and the overall banter between doctors and patients.  Read more…

"Instant filling action with continuous age and expression wrinkle reduction."

Rating: C-

Michelle says: When I'm not testing products for the Beauty Board, I cover faith and values as a beat. So I'm quite familiar with miracles. I was pretty excited about my Minus 417 filler, because it promises divine intervention. A company wouldn't actually lie about this, would it? The first time I applied this smooth cream infused with essential oils, (the jar includes a little application spatula), I was blown away. It really works! All those fine lines around my mouth, forehead and upper lip area gone! I was plotting ways to quit my job so I could become a full-time distributor and then I looked in the mirror 20 minutes later. Those little buggers were back. For a quick fix, and I mean quick, this wrinkle filler truly does the job. But after using it for a month, I still don't see the overall younger skin I was promised. For this very hefty price, I'd rather save the money and put it toward Botox.

Anti-Aging: 10 Easy Strategies To Slow The Aging Process

A new study shows a compound in red wine improves cell functioning and longevity.

Red wine has long been a controversial libation (and not because of cabernet versus malbec battles). Scientists have gone back and forth over the years about red wine's benefits; specifically whether or not resveratrol, a plant compound found in the drink, has anti-aging powers.

But a recent study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found resveratrol does prolong lifespan, overturning a 2010 National Institute of Aging report.

Researchers at the National Institute of Health and the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research found that resveratrols anti-aging properties are only expressed when a specific gene, SIRT1, is present, i09 reports. Mice bred without the SIRT1 gene were not affected by the compound. But The Los Angeles Times reports:

The discovery may speed up the use of resveratrol in an anti-aging drug; previous attempts were cut short because of the 2010 NIA report. Well drink to that -- and to these nine other anti-aging strategies.

Some foods and chemical additives cause arthritis inflammation, gout and fibromyalgia pain

by: JB Bardot

Certain foods and chemical additives disguised as food can aggravate or cause muscle and joint pain associated with arthritis, gout and fibromyalgia. Avoiding these foods can pave the way for reduced inflammation, stiffness and pain - setting the stage for ongoing relief, with increased mobility and a better mental attitude. Although it may be a challenge to avoid well-loved foods, keep in mind that many of those foods are causing widespread systemic problems that result in debilitating pain, so they are not your friends.

Nightshade Vegetables

The nightshade vegetables are lesser-known offenders; however, for some people, eating any nightshade can cause excruciating pain and disability. This small family of vegetables contains a natural substance called solanine; when consumed, it can produce severe pain in the joints and the soft tissue, giving rise to arthritis and fibromyalgia flare-ups. The nightshades include tomatoes, peppers, white potatoes, eggplant and tobacco. Because several of these vegetables are included in so many recipes, special attention must be given to eliminating them from the diet. Smokers suffering from arthritis might view the possible cause and effect relationship of tobacco on their condition. Readmore…

Implanted Defibrillators Benefit Older People

(HealthDay News) -- Implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), which deliver an electric shock to prevent sudden death when a heart stops beating properly, improve survival in people 75 and older, new research suggests.

The finding contradicts several earlier studies, notably a 2007 report from Canada that said the benefits of ICDs were limited for older people.

"Their discussion looked at defibrillators in patients who were older and sicker," said Dr. Paul Chan, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, and lead author of the new report. "It found use of defibrillators was limited, because they were more likely to die. But there was no control group, no comparison with a group of similar patients who did not get defibrillators."

The new study did have such a control group. It looked at results for 500 people who got ICDs because their left ventricles, which pump blood to the body, were functioning at no more than 35 percent of capacity. The study compared those results to those for a similar number of people with the same condition who did not get ICDs.

"We found that older people were more likely to die," Chan said, "but in this older group of patients, we still found they got a benefit from the defibrillator, similar to that seen in the other age groups."

Over the course of the six-year study, the overall death rate was 26.7 percent for the non-ICD group and 21.6 percent for the ICD group. This 30 percent reduction in deaths was the same for people 75 and older as well as younger recipients. Read more…

Has Your Doctor Turned You Into a Hypochondriac?

Once you turn 40 you start hearing a different tune from your doctor. The person who once said you were healthy as an ox is starting to tell you about the problems of aging, how you aren't as strong as you used to be and that oncoming illnesses are imminent and dangerous. This has led many to believe that their doctor is trying to make them a hypochondriac. Are doctors doing this, or is it just the imagination of someone who really cannot accept that his or her health truly is declining? If the doctor is doing this, is this considered malpractice? All of these questions will be answered.

Eating Alkaline Green Vegetables and Fruit Can Prevent Type

Children born to mothers who ate plenty of alkaline green vegetables and fruit during pregnancy are less likely to have type 1 diabetes, Swedish researchers say."This is the first study to show a link between vegetable intake during pregnancy and the risk of the child subsequently developing Type 1 diabetes, but more studies of various kinds will be needed before we can say anything definitive," study author Hilde Brekke, a clinical nutritionist at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, said in a news release from the university.Brekke and colleagues studied 6,000 5-year-olds and found that 3 percent either had fully developed Type 1 diabetes or had elevated levels of antibodies that indicate a risk of developing the disease. The risk was twice as high in children whose mothers rarely ate vegetables during pregnancy, and lowest among children whose mothers ate vegetables every day of their pregnancy.According to Dr. Robert O. Young, Director of Research at the pH Miracle Living Center, "Type 1 diabetes begins in the small bowel where new stem cells and blood are made. Eating animal protein and dairy products damages the intestinal villi of the small intestine which sets the stage for Type I diabetes. Children eating chicken and beef are more likely to be constipated and then diabetic because of the constipation from undigested animal protein."The study was recently published online in the journal Pediatric Diabetes. MANILA, Philippines - Anti-aging need not be cosmetic.

This is according to a boutique medical-cum-wellness center, which promises to change Filipinos' views on health care.

The LifeScience Center for Wellness and Preventive Medicine is promoting anti-aging medicine as an alternative to the disease-based approach of the medical community.

"It is something that we never had in the Philippines before. It is something that should be a cornerstone of medical practice. It is how you know which patients will respond to which medications, which patients could get which disease," said Benedict Francis Valdecanas.

This runs counter to the perception that anti-aging medicine is purely aesthetics, especially in a country where the practice has been associated with celebrity-focused, and -endorsed, cosmetic surgeries.

Valdecanas said anti-aging medicine uses some of the most advanced scientific and medical technologies to provide "customized" medication, allowing individuals to slow down their internal clocks.

Cholesterol Measurements May Be Made Easier

(HealthDay News) -- Methods to gauge blood cholesterol to determine vascular disease risk can be simplified, researchers in England say.

Their method measures levels of either total or high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good" cholesterol) in the blood or apolipoproteins (proteins that help transport cholesterol), without the need to have patients fast and without regard to another form of blood fat called triglycerides.

"Expert opinion is divided" on which combination of measurements is ideal in gauging cardiovascular risk, explained John Danesh, of the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration Coordinating Centre at the University of Cambridge, and colleagues.

In order to examine the association between major blood fats and apolipoproteins and coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke, the researchers analyzed data on more than 300,000 people without initial vascular disease who took part in 68 long-term studies.

During the follow-up periods of the studies, there were almost 8,900 nonfatal heart attacks, more than 3,900 coronary heart disease deaths, over 2,500 ischemic strokes, 513 hemorrhagic strokes and more than 2,500 unclassified strokes, the study authors noted. Read more...

Key genes that switch off with aging highlighted as potential targets for anti-aging therapies

Public release date: 19-Apr-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Contact: Emma Reynolds emma.reynolds@kcl.ac.uk 44-207-848-4334 King's College London

Researchers at King's College London, in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, have identified a group of 'ageing' genes that are switched on and off by natural mechanisms called epigenetic factors, influencing the rate of healthy ageing and potential longevity.

The study also suggests these epigenetic processes that can be caused by external factors such as diet, lifestyle and environment are likely to be initiated from an early age and continue through a person's life. The researchers say that the epigenetic changes they have identified could be used as potential 'markers' of biological ageing and in the future could be possible targets for anti-ageing therapies.

Published today in PLoS Genetics, the study looked at 172 twins aged 32 to 80 from the TwinsUK cohort based at King's College London and St Thomas' Hospital, as part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.

The researchers looked for epigenetic changes in the twins' DNA, and performed epigenome-wide association scans to analyse these changes in relation to chronological age. They identified 490 age related epigenetic changes. They also analysed DNA modifications in age related traits and found that epigenetic changes in four genes relate to cholesterol, lung function and maternal longevity.

To try to identify when these epigenetic changes may be triggered, the researchers replicated the study in 44 younger twins, aged 22 to 61, and found that many of the 490 age related epigenetic changes were also present in this younger group. The researchers say these results suggest that while many age related epigenetic changes happen naturally with age throughout a person's life, a proportion of these changes may be initiated early in life.

Dr Jordana Bell from King's College London, who co-led the study said: 'We found that epigenetic changes associate with age related traits that have previously been used to define biological age.

'We identified many age-related epigenetic changes, but four seemed to impact the rate of healthy ageing and potential longevity and we can use these findings as potential markers of ageing. These results can help understand the biological mechanisms underlying healthy ageing and age-related disease, and future work will explore how environmental effects can affect these epigenetic changes.'

Dr Panos Deloukas, co-leader of the study from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, said: 'Our study interrogated only a fraction of sites in the genome that carry such epigenetic changes; these initial findings support the need for a more comprehensive scan of epigenetic variation.'
