Greys Anatomy Season 13, Episode 19 Spoilers: Whats Inside Maggie Tackles Big Case, Faces Insecurities; Stephanie Puts Doctors Life at Risk with Mistake

Greys Anatomy season 13s episode 19, titled Whats Inside, is set to follow Maggie as she takes on a big case. She will also have to face her own insecurities when other doctors dont think she is the right one for the job. Meanwhile, Stephanie may put a doctors life at risk with a mistake.

The synopsis for Whats Inside posted on TV Guide reads, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) takes on a big case, but many of the doctors worry she's not the right one for the job. Elsewhere, Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) makes a mistake while treating one of Grey Sloan's own.

The photographs posted on Spoilers Guide reveal that Maggie will be forced to go through one of the most challenging times in her career as she attempts to take on a big case that many of her colleagues think may be too much for her to handle.

In some of the images, Maggie is seen surrounded by her friends including half-sister Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). Maggie looks down-hearted as tears roll down her cheeks. Meredith is hugging her for comfort.

In another set of images, Jackson (Jesse Williams) is seen presenting Maggie a large pile of files. She flips through them with a worried expression on her face. The files are presumably information or case studies on the big case she has to perform.

The current head of the Cardiothoracic surgery department at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital has a lot of issues to deal with especially since her mothers recent death. Maggie will be pushing herself with the complicated case to help her move on from her personal tragedies but this may have some bad consequences.

Meanwhile, Stephanie will also be facing problems of her own when she commits a mistake while treating one of Grey Sloans doctors. Stephanies colleague-turned-patient is yet to be revealed.

Greys Anatomy season 13s episode 19, titled Whats Inside, is scheduled to air on ABC on April 6, 2017. It was directed by Nzingha Stewart and written by Tia Napolitano. It will be followed by episode 20, titled "In the Air Tonight," directed by Chandra Wilson and scheduled to be released on April13.

McGill University is the worlds third-best university for the study of Anatomy & Physiology, behind only the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, according to the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The seventh edition of QS Quacquarelli Symondss analysis of subject-specific university performance, released today, lists the worlds best universities for the study of 46 different subjects. Anatomy & Physiology is one of four new subject categories introduced in this years listing.

We are extremely pleased to rank among the worlds top three universities in the study of anatomy and physiology, said David Eidelman, Vice-Principal of Health Affairs and Dean of Medicine at McGill. This is a direct outcome of the quality of our academics and staff in these departments, who I congratulate for their stellar and hard work on behalf of our students. I am also gratified to see McGills rankings rise this year in the medicine and pharmacology categories.

McGills ranking in the Medicine subject category rose to 22nd this year from 27th in 2016. In Pharmacology, McGill moved up to the 31st spot from 37th a year ago.

Another standout performance came in the Engineering Mineral and Mining category, with McGill rising to a tie for sixth place globally this year from 13th place last year. We are very proud to be ranked so highly along with our counterparts in other Canadian institutions, said Jim Nicell, McGills Dean of Engineering. The mining industry is an essential part of the economy of Canada, so we must always do our best to stay at the forefront in our teaching and research in support of this sector.

Anatomy of a felony – Norman Transcript

Editors Note: The purpose of this story is to explain the criminal process for individuals who have been arrested on suspicion of committing a felony. In addition, Cleveland County court officials and attorneys comments in this story were not made in reference to any specific case.

Like a living organism, the criminal justice system has an anatomy an anatomy that is well studied and well known to its juris doctors, yet complex.

The process for a person who has been arrested in connection with committing a felony starts with rights outlined in the U.S. Constitution meant to protect people both foreign and domestic.

Our rights are so valuable because of the price that has been paid for them, Norman attorney David Smith. If we dont take care of these rights, then those veterans died for nothing.

According to the U.S. Constitution, in all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence. (U.S. Constitution, Amendment VI)

Following an arrest, a person is booked into a county jail on recommended charges from the arresting agency. The accused is held on a jail bond until a district court judge issues bail in relation to charges the district attorneys office decides to file. Jail bonds are a set amount decided by county and court officials.

According to a 2007 Cleveland County general order, persons in jail for charges that include traffic violations, alcohol, drugs and larceny can be released on their own recognizance. For violent offenses, such as assault and murder, jail bonds can range between $1,000 and no bond, meaning the person is held without bond until they appear before a judge for their first court appearance.

The initial appearance is where the accused is advised of charges they are facing, their rights, issued a bail or released on their own recognizance and given another court date.

The law is clear in what a judge has to take into account when setting bail, Cleveland County Special Judge Steve Stice said. This can include looking at the nature of the crime, employment history, any priors for failing to appear, has the person hired counsel, and do they have members of the community who will vouch for them. Bail is only to ensure the person will come back to court; its not meant for punishment.

The next step is a preliminary hearing conference, where the defense and prosecution meet andthe district attorney can offeran initial plea deal. If the deal is accepted, a disposition or sentencing date is set. If not, a preliminary or probable cause hearing is set.

A preliminary hearing is the first time evidence is heard in court.

The state has to provide enough evidence to convince a judge that there is probable cause for the case to move forward and go to trial, Stice said. Again, its not enough evidence to convict, only enough to where the judge believes a jury should hear it.

In addition, a preliminary hearing is also the first time where the burden of proof is a factor a burden that is always on the prosecution in criminal cases. There are two levels in felony cases. They are probable cause, which is the lowest burden, and beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the highest burden.

A judge makes sure that the state has enough evidence to proceed with the charge theyve chosen to go on, Stice said.

If a judge finds probable cause, the accused is bound over and will be formally arraigned. Formal arraignment is the first time the accused enters a plea of guilty or not guilty.

Pre-trial or status conferences are then set to ensure whether the case needs to go to trial. Cleveland County District Judge Thad Balkman said this is the time both parties are expected to cooperate in the exchange of evidence, called discovery.

The idea behind discovery is to avoid surprises at trial to avoid trial by ambush, Balkman said.

There are two different types of criminal trials in Oklahoma: jury and non-jury. Verdicts in jury trials are decided by a 12-person jury selected from within the county. In a non-jury trial, a district judge decides the verdict.

At trial, the burden switches from probable cause to beyond reasonable doubt. Its a burden Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn said he gladly accepts.

The burden should be on the state. Its absolutely the best thing, Mashburn said. When dealing with someones liberty possibly being taken, the burden should be on the group that is wanting to take it away.

Balkman said neither the state nor defense can define what beyond a reasonable doubt means. Each juror has a responsibility to decide for themselves.

Thats the beauty of the jury trial system, Balkman said.

Smith said the jury represents the people.

They are the voice of the community, he said. There are only a few places in the world where that is the case. The government (prosecution) cant do anything unless the people say they can.

If a jury finds the defendant guilty, a formal sentencing date will be setlaterfollowing the verdict.

In Oklahoma, those convicted have 10 days from formal sentencing to file an intent to appeal. The appeal then goes to the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, and possibly the state Supreme Court.

We announced last month that the intriguing tour where you have a two-course dinner before watching a "body" being dissected was coming to Cornwall and now the date and venue has been announced.

The sell-out tour Anatomy Lab LIVE will perform a live dissection of VIVIT the world's only semi-synthetic human cadaver for audiences this April.

Anatomist Samuel Piri will perform the dissection procedure to showcase health and disease on real internal organs at this unforgettable event.

VIVIT is a specially constructed synthetic human cadaver that houses real organs. During the procedure Samuel will dissect VIVIT to reveal the inside of the head and jaw demonstrating the brain and spinal cord.

Following this Samuel will open the thoracic cavity to show the trachea, lungs and heart followed by the abdominal cavity revealing the stomach, liver, gall bladder, intestines, kidneys and bladder.

All of VIVIT's organs are of swine origin due to their anatomical similarities with humans.

Live on stage Samuel will compare the human body in its healthy form to anatomical samples damaged by excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

Audiences will have chance to put their questions to Samuel and to leading medics accompanying him on stage. Following the procedure the samples will be prepped for handling by those in the audience who wish to further examine the specimens.

The Cornwall tour event will be held at St Mellion International Resort on Saturday, April 1. The event begins at 6pm finishing at 11.45pm. Tickets include a two-course sit down meal before the procedure begins. Tickets are priced 60 per person or a group ticket that admits 6 is 300. All ticket holders must be over 16.

Washington Husky Quarterback Jake Browning is recovering from surgery on his throwing shoulder. Heres why this is very good news

Quarterback Jake Browning led the Washington Huskies to the NCAA football playoffs. There, he ran into a tough Alabama defense and the team lost the game 24-7. But unknown to many, Browning was not up to 100%. In fact, he had injured his throwing shoulder early in the season in the home victory over Arizona State.

The following week, the Huskies would lose to the visiting USC Trojans 26-13. They would not lose another game until the playoffs.

In retrospect, his performance in the Arizona State and USC games were below average for the young hurler. With a season average rating of 167.5, his Arizona State win came in at 61.4 percent completion for 338 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for a rating of 131.8. The following week, he completed 37.5percent of his passes for 118yards twotouchdowns and zerointerceptions for a rating of 106.3. In the playoff game facing Alabama, he completed 52.6 percent of his passes for 150 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for a rating of 83.9. All efforts contributed to the two season losses.

But an injury to the throwing shoulder can lead to below average performances. While we do not know the exact nature of the injury, we do know these facts:

So in summary, the injury is relatively minor. But based on the evidence, what is the most likely injury?

In summary, there are three types of soft tissues that could be mended with a minor surgical procedure: cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

While cartilage is the plastic-like tissue that covers the ends of bones, acting like lubricant and shock absorbers, ligaments are the soft connective tissue that holds the joint together. Secondly, tendons are the soft connective tissues that anchor muscles to bones and joints. In the case of a minor shoulder injury, any of the three tissues could be injured.

Healing any of these types of injuries are similar in arthroscopic surgery. So lets discuss the process:

Phase I : Post Operative recovery This is the period of time immediately following surgery. Browningwill need to keep the shoulder as immobile as possible and to keep hisarm in a sling. The use of the sling keeps the weight of hisarm off of thesoft tissues which assists in the healing process. (through Feb 2017)

Phase II: Passive Physical Therapy For the next six to eight weeks, Browning enters passive physical therapy. Now he will work with a physical therapist to perform gentle, assisted exercises to help regain movement and range of motion inhis shoulder. Because damaged tissues are still actively healing,his shoulder joint needs to be supported during movement. (Mid April 2017)

Phase III: Active Physical Therapy Now the therapy changes from motion to strength. Browning will be tasked with building his shoulder strength gradually to avoid reinjury, but at an intensive pace to meet the demands of the 2017 football season. While this period will progress quickly, the minimum is likely to be three months time. (End July 2017)

The Washington Husky Spring Football game will be held on Saturday, April 22nd. Its highly unlikely Jake Browning will be playing in that game. The team will likely have Tony Rodriguez, Jeff Lindquist, Blake Gregory, Daniel Bridge-Gadd and K.J. Carta-Samuels active for the game. The team also has 2017 recruit QB Jake Haener in the mix for the 2017 season.

It is very unlikely that Jake Browning will suit up for this game.

The Huskies regular season begins on September 1st on a coast to coast road trip to Piscataway, New Jersey to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. As of now, Browning will very likely be suited up and ready to go for the season opener.

With his shoulder fully healed, Browning should be far more effective to close out this season. It was the Seattle Times Adam Jude who first reported the shoulder injury to quarterback Jake Browning in mid January. He followed up with a second article on February 1 to confirm that Brownings status was determined to be doing well by head coach Chris Petersen.

Weve already had a plan you know, Jake is one of those guys that just loves to throw and throw and throw, Petersen said. So from really when he got here, weve been trying to back him off (after) these long years, to make sure. And so he should be fine for spring ball, but also want to give these other (quarterbacks) some really good work in spring ball. Chris Petersen per Adam Judes interview

And so, there was a little ambiguity here. Yes, Jake Browning is right on track. Yes, He will be fine for spring ball. He may even be throwing by then. But dont panic when he isnt suiting up for the annual Spring Football game.

He will be good, but he wont be THAT good.

About nine years ago, 17.5 million people tuned into an episode of Greys Anatomy that, on the surface, appeared like any other high-stakes surgery, high-drama love triangles. What those millions of Greys viewers didnt know was that they were guinea pigs for a massive, secret experiment.

That experiment was arguably a referendum about a single woman: Jennifer Jako, and her decision to become a mother.

In 1991, at the age of 18, Jako had a one night stand with a high-school friend. It was the only time shed ever had sex without a condom. She contracted HIV and spent years trying to debunk misconceptions: producing a documentary that aired on MTV, speaking at college campuses and on talk shows.

Over time, the countrys view of HIV evolved. As people started living longer, stigma decreased. People generally understood that the infection wasnt a death sentence any longer.

But there was one area people couldnt seem to understand: Pregnancy. Studies showed the general public simply didnt know or didnt believe that an HIV-positive woman, with the right treatment, had a tremendously low chance of passing the virusonto her baby less than 2-percent at the time.

Jennifer Jako got a cruel lesson in where the public stood when she appeared on the cover of Newsweek magazine, six months pregnant.

Later, as an experiment, the Kaiser Family Foundation decided to see if they could move the needle by trying something totally different: product placement of medical information in a Greys Anatomy episode.

In this episode of Only Human we tell the epic story of Jennifer Jako and how she managed to sneak into our livings rooms and, possibly, change public opinion forever.

Last weeks Greys Anatomy revealed the fate of Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).

After numerous episodes this season dealt with the aftermath of Karev beating up DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), Alex had decided to accept a plea deal, which would put him behind bars. However, he had gone missing and no one knew what he was up to until last week when suddenly, he surprised Meredith at home.

The episode last week cut with Karevs surprise return home, begging the question, how did he get out of jail time? Tonights ep will reveal all of those details. But first,Variety chatted with Chambers aboutwhat to expect now that Alex is back.

I think having everything taken from him I think he learned a lot there, but I think he appreciates being in peace and hes very good at what he does and he thrives there, Chambers explains of how the experience will change Alex.

As for Jo (Camilla Luddington), their relationship will require a lot of work to get back on track. He was going to take a plea deal to protect his girl. Theyre not together right now, but well see where that goes, Chambers says.Hes still angry with her, but if anyone knows anything about second chances, its Alex. So he has that to think about. She messed up, but there must be a piece of him that still feels for her. Love just doesnt die like that.

Whatever happens, Chambers has a personal wish for his character: I just hope Alex finds some happiness. Crap. He just never seems to catch a break. Im thinking soon there might be some stability, he teases.

However, in real life, Chambers is ecstatic to be experiencing 13 seasons of stability

Its a blessing. Its crazy. Its so awesome, the original cast member says of Greys Anatomys flourishing in its 13th season.With a laugh, he adds, Even ER, I think theirratings dropped a lot in their 13th year.

Microscopic anatomy involves the use of optical instruments in the study of the tissues of various structures, known as histology and also in the study of cells.

The history of anatomy is characterized by a progressive understanding of the functions of the organs and structures of the human body. Methods have also improved dramatically, advancing from the examination of animals by dissection of carcasses and cadavers (corpses) to 20th century medical imaging techniques including X-ray, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Derived from the Greek anatemn "I cut up, cut open" from ana "up", and temn "I cut",[5] anatomy is the scientific study of the structure of organisms including their systems, organs and tissues. It includes the appearance and position of the various parts, the materials from which they are composed, their locations and their relationships with other parts. Anatomy is quite distinct from physiology and biochemistry, which deal respectively with the functions of those parts and the chemical processes involved. For example, an anatomist is concerned with the shape, size, position, structure, blood supply and innervation of an organ such as the liver; while a physiologist is interested in the production of bile, the role of the liver in nutrition and the regulation of bodily functions.[6]

The discipline of anatomy can be subdivided into a number of branches including gross or macroscopic anatomy and microscopic anatomy.[7]Gross anatomy is the study of structures large enough to be seen with the naked eye, and also includes superficial anatomy or surface anatomy, the study by sight of the external body features. Microscopic anatomy is the study of structures on a microscopic scale, including histology (the study of tissues), and embryology (the study of an organism in its immature condition).[3]

Anatomy can be studied using both invasive and non-invasive methods with the goal of obtaining information about the structure and organization of organs and systems.[3] Methods used include dissection, in which a body is opened and its organs studied, and endoscopy, in which a video camera-equipped instrument is inserted through a small incision in the body wall and used to explore the internal organs and other structures. Angiography using X-rays or magnetic resonance angiography are methods to visualize blood vessels.[8][9][10][11]

The term "anatomy" is commonly taken to refer to human anatomy. However, substantially the same structures and tissues are found throughout the rest of the animal kingdom and the term also includes the anatomy of other animals. The term zootomy is also sometimes used to specifically refer to animals. The structure and tissues of plants are of a dissimilar nature and they are studied in plant anatomy.[6]

The kingdom Animalia, also called Metazoa, contains multicellular organisms that are heterotrophic and motile (although some have secondarily adopted a sessile lifestyle). Most animals have bodies differentiated into separate tissues and these animals are also known as eumetazoans. They have an internal digestive chamber, with one or two openings; the gametes are produced in multicellular sex organs, and the zygotes include a blastula stage in their embryonic development. Metazoans do not include the sponges, which have undifferentiated cells.[12]

Unlike plant cells, animal cells have neither a cell wall nor chloroplasts. Vacuoles, when present, are more in number and much smaller than those in the plant cell. The body tissues are composed of numerous types of cell, including those found in muscles, nerves and skin. Each typically has a cell membrane formed of phospholipids, cytoplasm and a nucleus. All of the different cells of an animal are derived from the embryonic germ layers. Those simpler invertebrates which are formed from two germ layers of ectoderm and endoderm are called diploblastic and the more developed animals whose structures and organs are formed from three germ layers are called triploblastic.[13] All of a triploblastic animal's tissues and organs are derived from the three germ layers of the embryo, the ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm.

Animal tissues can be grouped into four basic types: connective, epithelial, muscle and nervous tissue.

Connective tissues are fibrous and made up of cells scattered among inorganic material called the extracellular matrix. Connective tissue gives shape to organs and holds them in place. The main types are loose connective tissue, adipose tissue, fibrous connective tissue, cartilage and bone. The extracellular matrix contains proteins, the chief and most abundant of which is collagen. Collagen plays a major part in organizing and maintaining tissues. The matrix can be modified to form a skeleton to support or protect the body. An exoskeleton is a thickened, rigid cuticle which is stiffened by mineralisation, as in crustaceans or by the cross-linking of its proteins as in insects. An endoskeleton is internal and present in all developed animals, as well as in many of those less developed.[13]

The spinal column, better known as your backbone, is a strong yet flexible multipurpose structure. It holds the weight of your head and torso and allows you to move in many directions. If it were nothing but a straight, inflexible rod, we'd walk like robots from bad B-movies. Instead, the flexible spine (moved and supported by muscles) enables us to twist and hit a golf ball and bend over to tie our shoes.

The bony spinal column surrounds your spinal cord much like a conduit around an electrical cord. It protects the all-important spinal cord, a bundle of nerves that run from your brain through your spinal column and branch out to the rest of the body.

Technically speaking, the spinal column includes 34 bones. Twenty-four bones are articulated vertebrae bones (a singular bone is a vertebra). At the bottom of the spinal column are the remaining bones, the naturally fused vertebrae of the sacrum and coccyx, which join with your pelvis (hip bones). When healthcare professionals refer to the spine, they're generally talking about the 24 vertebrae that form an elegant, double-S shaped line.

Definition Articulation refers to the motion that occurs between joints. For example, certain facet joints in the spine allow for up, down, side to side, and twisting movements.

Spine's Vertebral Bones Vertebral bones have different shapes and sizes and they get larger farther down the column. There are differences, but there are also plenty of similarities. Each vertebra has a large, cylinder-shaped body and a vertebral arch. The arch can be further subdivided into the spinous process (the bone that you can feel sticking out) and facet joints that wing out to the sides. Seen from above, a vertebra looks like a giant head with three pieces sticking out and a hole in the middle. Muscles, ligaments, and discs attach to various parts of a vertebra.

The space between the vertebral body and the arch is the spinal canal, for your spinal cord. If this canal narrows, due to disease, for example, it can squeeze the spinal cord and cause pain. Remember, your spinal cord is a bundle of nerves and nerves carry pain signals. There are other openings among the stacked vertebrae, too. Spaces called intervertebral foramina are where nerve roots branch out of the spinal cord.

Definition Intervertebral foramina are the holes through which the nerves leave the spine. These holes are the spaces between the upper and lower vertebral bodies. The space is naturally rather narrow. If the space narrows more due to trauma, disease, or deterioration, nerves can get pinched.

Curves Improve Spinal Column Strength Finally, let's take a look at the spinal column as a whole. When healthcare professionals refer to the different part of the spine, they reference them by the four main areas (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral). Each bone within an area has its own number. The spine is naturally curved. These curves make the spinal column stronger, help absorb shock from running and jumping, and help you maintain your balance. The size of the curves varies by individuals, but excessive curves can cause problems.

Anatomy of a cloud project cost overrun – CIO

I recently conducted an informal survey of some cloud integration companies and found something deeply troubling. Aside from cookie-cutter or formulaic quick-start projects, more than 70 percent of cloud consulting engagements involving new customers resulted in either a 10 percent cost overrun or a change-order. The bigger the project, the more likely the overrun.

You can blame it on stupid consultants or bad estimation or nutty customers or sunspot activity, but blame does no good. Something is going wrong here, and its causing a lot of heartburn for customers and vendors alike.

In an earlier article on trends making the cloud consulting market treacherous, I mentioned that a root cause of any cloud overrun is mis-set expectations: customers believing that meeting their requirements will be simpler than it is and that it should cost less than it will. However significant that observation may be, its not particularly actionable. So lets take the next step to understand the driving specifics, and what steps we can take.

In most cloud projects, several areas are nicely contained and are unlikely to cause significant cost surprises. If setting up a function is merely a matter of system configuration, there cant be that many hours of mouse-driving involved.

We should be so lucky!

Here are the project areas where we see cost surprises on a regular basis:

This twin-headed beast can involve some very serious surprises, as its impossible to detect many of the issues until youre in the middle of draining the swamp. The cost issues scale both with the amount of data and the number of data sources.

Even if the data looks superficially clean, there may be non-printing characters, format problems, improper values, overloaded semantics and object-model ambiguities that make for a messy migration or integration. If an ongoing integration is needed, you may not realize early on that the point-to-point adaptor you originally bid needs to be replaced with a full-blown middleware system.

Solution strategy: Do a real cost-benefit analysis of the amount of data to be migrated and the number of sources to be integrated, and develop a cost model that reflects reality. Start on the migration/integration/validation tasks at the outset of the project, so the surprises come early. Expect that migration and integration can represent the single largest part of your project.

Clients often stipulate no code, out of the box functionality only as part of their project definition, and on day two of the project discover requirements that cannot be satisfied any other way. Unfortunately, too many consultants are code-happy, so they willingly nudge the client toward custom-code land. And the rich coding environment of the Salesforce.com (SFDC) platform makes it tempting for both user interface and business logic.

The problem, of course, will be developer productivity and code maintenance costs. Expect custom coding a feature to be at least an order of magnitude more expensive than configuring the standard functionality.

Solution strategy: To the degree possible, use standard system features and off-the-shelf plug-in products to meet requirements. Bend requirements to fit whats available. Push coding out of the initial delivery if possible, so coders are working on a stable platform. For items that must be built, push to streamline processes and business rules that can cause combinatorial explosions (e.g., the security model, order configurations, distribution/partner networks).

The original SFDC reporting engine strikes a nice balance between power and ease of use, but it gives spreadsheet-quality output. If you want really clever and beautiful reports, it wont take long before you run into a wall.

SFDCs Wave reporting system is both more powerful and prettier, but really leveraging its power means writing query code. For even fancier stuff with nice formatting, multi-page layouts, and automatic office-document generation third-party add-ons are needed.

But as I noted in a previous article on design work in CRM projects, if its got to be pretty, its going to be pretty expensive both to set up in the first place, and to evolve over time with your needs.

Solution strategy: Thoroughly understand and specify every variant including formats and user-specific tweaks of every single report you will need prior to putting the system out to bid. Its best to discover that you actually require 100+ reports, not the ten you thought. If you have a working report (e.g., from Access or Crystal) that you need the system to emulate, provide the vendor with a sample set of input data and the reports output, with annotations regarding format and exception conditions.

This means you, project leaders and executive champions! Things you do will contribute directly to overruns. As I discussed in an article on agile project management, distance and delay are the enemies of efficient and economical projects.

But I need to add some new Ds that are even more deadly: dithering and (unending) discovery. The first of these, dithering (a.k.a. indecisiveness) is bad enough, as it causes delay and erratic direction, which leads directly to rework. But the second, whose hallmarks are discovering that (1) the requirements werent really known up front, (2) your assumptions about how things need to work were wrong, and (3) your assumptions about how the new system features will work were wrong, is the root cause of scope creep. I cant tell you how many large projects discovered more than half of the costly requirements after formal discovery was completed.

Solution strategy: Make the discovery phase longer, and when its complete have a signoff sheet for a strict feature and data freeze. Make the project team as small and tight as it can be, and do not hire more than one consulting company (to reduce finger-pointing). Work to constantly improve trust among the team members. Kick people off the team who blame. Keep executives and bean counters as far away from the project as you can, and limit big review meetings. Focus everyones attention on business value rather than abstract or arbitrary metrics and project dashboards.

Im currently reading the book Being Wrong Adventures in the Margin of Error after having finished Wrong! Why Experts Keep Failing Us. So maybe Im a little jaded, but it sure looks to me like cost overruns are the result of bad assumptions, fragmentary information, incomplete requirements and low trust.

Interestingly, overruns are much less common for follow-on projects, where both sides have put the time in to develop good assumptions, a solid understanding of the real requirements and a trust relationship. So for initial projects, we clients and consultants have to stop the pretend-certainty about our projects.

The truth is we dont really know, and were not willing to spend the time and money to get sufficiently knowledgeable about, all the niggling details of a new project. We run off and get a budget without knowing what the project will really entail. And then we discover too many plot complications after weve reached the halfway mark in the project. For those hoping that hybrid agile techniques will solve the problem, I havent seen much help there.

In contrast, the real agile approach admits we dont know, and simply scopes the project deliverables dynamically to fit within the budget and schedule. The team discovers as they go, prioritizes as they go and focuses on maximizing business value instead of fixed (and possibly random) criteria. When done right, agile makes the bean counters happy (they can claim on time, on budget) and gets the most important stuff out to the users as soon as its done.

Katherine Heigl's newest series, Doubt, has been cancelled after just TWO episodes. Yikes!

Two episodes hardly seems like enough time to pass judgement, but it seems like CBS had seen enough, according to TVLine and already have a replacement filling its slot.

The former Grey's Anatomy star was leading an all-star cast that included the likes of Laverne Cox and Dule Hill and it was forecast to be a hit, but ratings have bombed something sharpish.

The series focused on Heigl, an attorney that falls for her client who has been accused of murdering his girlfriend.

CBS has not made a decision when or if the further 11 episodes will air.

The actress was tweeting about the show on Thursday (February 23) after the second episode aired and all seemed fine then.

Oh how things have changed.

Elsewhere, she and husband Josh Kelley welcomed their first son, Joshua Bishop Kelley, on December 20.

The couple are already parents to two adopted daughters and now big sisters 8-year-old Naleigh and 4-year-old Adelaide.

Last year, she opened up about her 2008 Emmy Awards controversy that saw her withdraw herself from the race because she didn't consider her Grey's Anatomy material was enough "to warrant an Emmy nomination".

Grey's Anatomy is currently in it's 13th season and airs on ABC.

The Detroit Pistons had a pattern for most of the season. They would start slow, take poor shots, be a step slow defensively, be down 6-10 points halfway through the first quarter. Sometimes the bench would rally and the Pistons would win, sometimes they trailed by too much or the bench never got it together. Either way, the starters almost never got off to a good start, and the first quarter was usually when they were at their worst.

There were platitudes about energy, getting off to better starts. Expressions that certain players had to bring it, play harder with more consistency. But what if there was another way to describe the Pistons starts? A way to quantify what they were doing and why it was so consistently unsuccessful, and a way forward to avoid falling into the same pitfalls going into next season can only be of help.

The Pistons were 21st in first quarter offensive rating, scoring just 102.7 points per 100 possessions in opening stanzas. They also had the second-worst true shooting rate in the NBA in first quarters with a woeful 51.3 clip.

In this piece were going to look at a typical Detroit Pistons first quarter from this past season. Were going to look at the kind of shots and locations the Pistons took, and were going to look at the expected value (or EV) of each shot they took in this specific first quarter. This EV will be based on a simple calculation of (FG% * 2) for two-pointers and (FG% * 3) for three-pointers. Well use NBA.coms shooting by range stat page to determine the varying field goal percentages by range.

The quarter that were going to examine is the first quarter of a game between the Pistons and the Indiana Pacers at the Palace of Auburn Hills on December 17th. The Pistons lost this game 105-90 and were outscored 27-26 in the first quarter. This is an entirely reasonable first quarter output, and this loss was due more to a 15-point second quarter than any specific failure in the first quarter.

Lets dive in.

The first shot of the game is taken by Tobias Harris. Its a 19-foot jump shot late in the shot clock. Remember, this is the first possession of the game, and it results in a late clock long two. This might be the most Piston way to start a game all season.

Harris has an expected value of 0.96 points per attempt from 15-19 feet.

He also takes the next shot, a spot up miss from 26 feet out on a drive and kick from Reggie Jackson. His expectation from there is slightly higher at 1.014 points per attempt.

Jackson scores the first points of the game for the Pistons on a spot up three, assisted by Tobias Harris. Remember, Jackson was among the best three-point shooters on the team, and he has an outstanding expectation from the corner, hitting 43.8 percent of those shots. His expectation on that success rate is 1.314 points per shot.

Andre Drummond takes and makes the next two shots, a seven-foot hook shot and a nine-foot hook. Its been well-documented on this site and elsewhere how poor his hook shot is and how mediocre his offense is when he gets outside five feet. Both shots go, but his expectation on both shots is a mere 0.81 points per attempt.

Tobias Harris takes the next two shots, splitting them. He misses the first, a 12-footer with an expectation of .898 points per attempt, but he hits the second, a 26-foot three-pointer with an EV of 1.014 points per attempt.

At this point, the Pistons have a 10-7 lead and theyre 4-of-7 from the floor. The shots theyve taken have a combined EV of 6.82, meaning their average expectation per field goal attempt is 0.974 points.

The Pistons score their next points on a transition three from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Jackson spots him across the arc and finds him for a wide open triple. Thanks to a late-season swoon, this shot has an EV of just .954 points per attempt, but at the time it was closer to 1.2 points per attempt.

KCP makes the next shot, also a three, and then misses a third three. Again, the EV for each shot is .954 points per attempt.

Tobias Harris follows that up with a missed three, with an expectation of 1.095 points.

Following that comes perhaps the wildest layup youll ever see from Reggie Jackson. While were going to assign this attempt a value of .968 (which itself is a dreadful rate at the rim), we can be honest and say this was basically a zero-chance attempt.

Drummond collects the rebound, misses a put back which has a 1.248 points per attempt EV, and a jump ball ensues which leads to a layup from Tobias Harris. That layup has a value of 1.308, significantly better than both Jackson and Drummonds rate at the rim.

The next attempts come from the free throw line via Reggie Jackson. He has a free throw percentage of 86.8 percent, thus eachattempt has a value of .868.

Andre Drummond takes the next three shots. He misses a six-foot hook worth .81 points, then Jackson hits him in transition for a layup at the basket, valued at 1.248. The third shot is a 20-foot jumper as the shot clock expires. Considering he hasnt hit such a shot, this attempt is assigned theentirely reasonable value of 0.

Reggie Jackson takes the next two shots, making a layup valued at .968 and missing a 16-foot jumps hot, valued at .81 points per attempt. Caldwell-Pope then misses a 27-foot jumper, valued at .954, and Ish Smith has checked in and misses a 26-foot three. Given his dreadful three-point shooting numbers from beyond 24 feet, his expected value here is .609 points per attempt.

KCP misses a layup valued at 1.074 points per attempt, Tobias Harris makes two free throws with a success rate of .841 (again, each free throw has this value), and Ish Smith misses a 12-foot shot with a value of 1.014 points per attempt.

In the end, the shots taken by the Detroit Pistons had an expected value of 25.206 points, and they scored this on 9-of-23 shooting. They were buoyed by better-than-average three-point shooting, hitting 4-of-9, and they were aided by four free throws, all of which they made.

Based on the pace of the first quarter (they played about 24 possessions, on pace for 95 in the game), their EV provides an expected offensive rating of 105.2. This rate would have tied them with the New York Knicks for 15th in the NBA in first quarter offensive rating, and it took them above-average three-point and free throw shooting to get there.

In summary, the Pistons had a positive-variance shooting stretch (or good luck, you could call it) in order to bring them to the middle of the league in first quarter scoring efficiency. Drummond also took three post shots (which is three too many) and made two, but he has among the leagues worst efficiency from the post.

Grey's Anatomy is an American medical television series that premiered on American Broadcasting Company (ABC) as a mid-season replacement on March 27, 2005. Grey's Anatomy is the highest-rated drama in the key 1849 demographic. While the ratings have fallen over the past few seasons, it was once among the overall top-ten rated shows in the United States. Grey's Anatomy has been well received by critics. Considered an impact on culture, the series has received numerous awards, and has also been included in various critics' top ten lists. It is the recipient of the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama, and multiple Emmy nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. The show has produced several specials, as well as distributed all seasons to DVD, and released a collection of merchandise. In 2012, Grey's Anatomy was named the fifth-highest revenue earning show, in terms of advertising per half-hour.

On May 7, 2015, ABC renewed the series for a twelfth season that will air during the 201516 television season.[1]

Shonda Rhimes, the series creator, wanted to make a show that she would enjoy watching,[2] and thought it would be interesting to create a show about "smart women competing against one another".[3] When asked how she decided to develop a medical drama, Rhimes responded:

The series was pitched to the ABC, who gave the green light, and the show was picked up as a mid-season replacement for Boston Legal in the 2005 television season.[5]Francie Calfo, executive vice president of development at ABC Entertainment, commented that ABC was looking for a medical show that was unlike the others airing at the time. She pointed out that [m]edical shows are hard, and it was hard trying to figure out where ours could be different. But where everybody else is speeding up their medical shows, [Rhimes] found a way to slow it down, so you get to know the characters. There's definitely a strong female appeal to it."[3]

The idea for the series began when a doctor told me it was incredibly hard to shave her legs in the hospital shower. At first that seemed like a silly detail. But then I thought about the fact that it was the only time and place this woman might have to shave her legs. That's how hard the work is."

Rhimes initially conceived Grey's Anatomy as a statement against racism. She endeavored to create a show that featured a racially diverse cast that allowed viewers to relate to characters regardless of race.[6] While creating characters, as well as writing the first script, the series' writers had no character descriptions in mind, and hoped to cast the best actor available for each part. Rhimes has explained that if the network did not allow her to create characters this way, she would have been hesitant about moving forward with the series.[4] Female roles in particular were developed as multi-faceted characters. Rhimes offered her insight on this: "I wanted to create a world in which you felt as if you were watching very real women. Most of the women I saw on TV didn't seem like people I actually knew. They felt like ideas of what women are. They never got to be nasty or competitive or hungry or angry. They were often just the loving wife or the nice friend. But who gets to be the bitch? Who gets to be the three-dimensional woman?"[4]

Gross anatomy involves the study of major body structures by dissection and observation and in its narrowest sense is concerned only with the human body. Gross anatomy customarily refers to the study of those body structures large enough to be examined without the help of magnifying devices, while microscopic anatomy is concerned with the study of structural units small enough to be seen only with a light microscope. Dissection is basic to all anatomical research. The earliest record of its use was made by the Greeks, and Theophrastus called dissection anatomy, from ana temnein, meaning to cut up.

Comparative anatomy, the other major subdivision of the field, compares similar body structures in different species of animals in order to understand the adaptive changes they have undergone in the course of evolution. (See comparative anatomy.)

None of the worlds oldest civilizations dissected a human body, which most people regarded with superstitious awe and associated with the spirit of the departed soul. Beliefs in life after death and a disquieting uncertainty concerning the possibility of bodily resurrection further inhibited systematic study. Nevertheless, knowledge of the body was acquired by treating wounds, aiding in childbirth, and setting broken limbs. The field remained speculative rather than descriptive, though, until the achievements of the Alexandrian medical school and its foremost figure, the Greek Herophilus (fl. 300 bc), who dissected human cadavers and thus gave anatomy a considerable factual basis for the first time. Herophilus made many important discoveries and was followed by his younger contemporary Erasistratus, who is sometimes regarded as the founder of physiology. In the 2nd century ad the Greek physician Galen assembled and arranged all the discoveries of the Greek anatomists, including with them his own concepts of physiology and his discoveries in experimental medicine. The many books Galen wrote became the unquestioned authority for anatomy and medicine in Europe because they were the only ancient Greek anatomical texts that survived the Dark Ages in the form of Arabic (and then Latin) translations.

Owing to church prohibitions against dissection, European medicine in the Middle Ages relied upon Galens mixture of fact and fancy rather than on direct observation for its anatomical knowledge, though some dissections were authorized for teaching purposes. In the early 16th century, the artist Leonardo da Vinci undertook his own dissections, and his beautiful and accurate anatomical drawings cleared the way for the Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius to restore the science of anatomy with his monumental De humani corporis fabrica libri septem (1543; The Seven Books on the Structure of the Human Body), which was the first comprehensive and illustrated textbook of anatomy. As a professor at the University of Padua, Vesalius encouraged younger scientists to accept traditional anatomy only after verifying it themselves, and this more critical and questioning attitude broke Galens authority and placed anatomy on a firm foundation of observed fact and demonstration.

From Vesalius exact descriptions of the skeleton, muscles, blood vessels, nervous system, and digestive tract, his successors in Padua progressed to studies of the digestive glands and the urinary and reproductive systems. Hieronymus Fabricius, Gabriello Fallopius, and Bartolomeo Eustachio were among the most important Italian anatomists, and their detailed studies led to fundamental progress in the related field of physiology. William Harveys discovery of the circulation of the blood, for instance, was based partly on Fabricius detailed descriptions of the venous valves.

The new application of magnifying glasses and compound microscopes to biological studies in the second half of the 17th century was the most important factor in the subsequent development of anatomical research. Primitive early microscopes enabled Marcello Malpighi to discover the system of tiny capillaries connecting the arterial and venous networks, Robert Hooke to first observe the small compartments in plants that he called cells, and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek to observe muscle fibres and spermatozoa. Thenceforth attention gradually shifted from the identification and understanding of bodily structures visible to the naked eye to those of microscopic size.

The use of the microscope in discovering minute, previously unknown features was pursued on a more systematic basis in the 18th century, but progress tended to be slow until technical improvements in the compound microscope itself, beginning in the 1830s with the gradual development of achromatic lenses, greatly increased that instruments resolving power. These technical advances enabled Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann to recognize in 183839 that the cell is the fundamental unit of organization in all living things. The need for thinner, more transparent tissue specimens for study under the light microscope stimulated the development of improved methods of dissection, notably machines called microtomes that can slice specimens into extremely thin sections. In order to better distinguish the detail in these sections, synthetic dyes were used to stain tissues with different colours. Thin sections and staining had become standard tools for microscopic anatomists by the late 19th century. The field of cytology, which is the study of cells, and that of histology, which is the study of tissue organization from the cellular level up, both arose in the 19th century with the data and techniques of microscopic anatomy as their basis.

In the 20th century anatomists tended to scrutinize tinier and tinier units of structure as new technologies enabled them to discern details far beyond the limits of resolution of light microscopes. These advances were made possible by the electron microscope, which stimulated an enormous amount of research on subcellular structures beginning in the 1950s and became the prime tool of anatomical research. About the same time, the use of X-ray diffraction for studying the structures of many types of molecules present in living things gave rise to the new subspecialty of molecular anatomy.

Scientific names for the parts and structures of the human body are usually in Latin; for example, the name musculus biceps brachii denotes the biceps muscle of the upper arm. Some such names were bequeathed to Europe by ancient Greek and Roman writers, and many more were coined by European anatomists from the 16th century on. Expanding medical knowledge meant the discovery of many bodily structures and tissues, but there was no uniformity of nomenclature, and thousands of new names were added as each medical writer followed his own fancy, usually expressing it in a Latin form.

By the end of the 19th century the confusion caused by the enormous number of names had become intolerable. Medical dictionaries sometimes listed as many as 20 synonyms for one name, and more than 50,000 names were in use throughout Europe. In 1887 the German Anatomical Society undertook the task of standardizing the nomenclature, and, with the help of other national anatomical societies, a complete list of anatomical terms and names was approved in 1895 that reduced the 50,000 names to 5,528. This list, the Basle Nomina Anatomica, had to be subsequently expanded, and in 1955 the Sixth International Anatomical Congress at Paris approved a major revision of it known as the Paris Nomina Anatomica.
