Anatomy of a tragedy: Police say boy with BB gun fatally shot by officers at high school – Los Angeles Times

San Diego police are investigating after two officers fatally shot a 15-year-old boy Saturday morning as he stood in front of Torrey Pines High School. Police say he was holding a BB gun.

Heres how the shooting went down:

AN EARLY MORNING DISPATCH

Police received a 911 call at 3:27 a.m. asking for a welfare check, said police homicide Lt. Mike Holden. The caller said there was a kid in front of the school who someone should probably check on and stated the person was not armed, the lieutenant said.

Police believe the caller was the boy himself, Holden said.

According to police radio traffic, a dispatcher asked two officers to check the welfare of someone at the school. The person was described as a white male, 15, of medium build, wearing a gray shirt and black pants. Officers said they were there about a minute later.

THE CONFRONTATION

The two officers arrived at the school on Del Mar Heights Road about the same time and saw the teen. As they got out of their patrol cars to speak with him, he pulled a handgun that was concealed in his waistband and pointed it at one of the officers, Holden said.

Both officers drew their weapons and told the boy to drop the gun, but he continued to point the gun and walk toward the one officer, Holden said.

The teen ignored additional commands, and the officers, fearing for their safety, both fired, the lieutenant said.

The teen was struck several times.

A dispatcher acknowledged shots fired and asked if any officers were injured. One officer answered negative but said paramedics are needed now. He said he and another officer were doing CPR. Another two or three minutes passed and an officer noted that CPR was still in progress.

THE DISCOVERY

The officers immediately began life-saving measures, and the boy was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he died, Holden said.

The boys gun remained at the scene to be processed as evidence. Police later determined that the gun was a semi-automatic BB air pistol, Holden said.

A small memorial of flowers and notes began to grow at the scene by Saturday afternoon.

The teen was a freshman at the Carmel Valley school and lived in the neighborhood. Police officials are declining to name him because he was a juvenile.

THE INVESTIGATION

Police are now investigating the shooting, and the community is in mourning.

Both officers had activated their body-worn cameras at some point and there is video of the incident for investigators to review.

The names of the officers involved are expected to be released in the next few days, per department protocol.

The officers have been on the force for 28 years and four years. One of the officers is on the departments Juvenile Services Team, Holden said.

Anatomy changes assessed for proton therapy – Medical Physics Web (subscription)

Researchers in the Netherlands have developed a population-based statistical model that could improve proton treatment plans for lung cancer patients. The method assesses the daily anatomical variations of the thorax, and complements other methods that account for device uncertainty and respiratory motion (Radiother. Oncol. 123 99).

Proton therapy is similar to conventional radiotherapy in that it is used to destroy tumours, but in principle has a finite range that spares surrounding healthy tissue. Such precision, however, can be thwarted by a patient's changing anatomy during a treatment plan. To avoid missing the tumour, radiotherapists will sometimes expand the target of radiation over the course of treatment, but studies have shown this method to be insufficient for proton therapy, as it can still end up delivering too little radiation to the tumour and too much radiation to healthy tissue, worsening side effects. The problem is more acute for lung cancer patients, as the contrast in tissue density in the thorax is much greater.

Researchers have been developing methods to accurately estimate how the target should evolve in proton therapy, and have so far taken into account respiratory motion, as well as setup and range errors in the proton therapy itself. Until now, however, a method to estimate a patient's anatomical variations has been lacking.

To create such a method, Jan-Jakob Sonke of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam and colleagues collected scans acquired for treatment planning and daily image guidance for a large cohort of patients. For each scan they used deformable image registration to measure, for each voxel, the displacement between treatment planning and treatment delivery.

In the next step, the researchers transferred the displacements to a reference anatomy, and averaged over the first treatment week to characterize the systematic variations. Finally, they used a method known as principle component analysis to extract independent "modes" of variations that are commonly found in the population.

"Similar methods have been applied [to] other parts of the body, but for the thorax, only the respiratory motions have been studied," said lead author Yenny Szeto of the Netherlands Cancer Institute. "With this, we can make statistical predictions of the systematic variations for a new patient to be treated for lung cancer radiation therapy The planned dose will better predict the actual delivered dose."

Sonke, Szeto and colleagues are now planning to integrate their model into proton treatment plans. "[Our] model generates plausible instances of the geometric changes," says Szeto. "We can convert these changes into probability distributions of range uncertainties, which will be included in the probabilistic plan optimization."

Shrinkage predictions boost lung tumour dose Lung proton therapy demands robust plans Motion mitigation for scanned protons Motion analysis enhances predictive model

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Chandra Wilson opens up about her daughter’s – ABC News

Actress Chandra Wilson, who plays a doctor on ABC's long-running hit drama "Grey's Anatomy," opened up about her family's real-life medical saga in an interview with "Good Morning America" that aired today.

Wilson, who has played Dr. Miranda Bailey on "Grey's Anatomy" for the past 13 seasons, described the uncertainty and fear she faced when her daughter, Sarina McFarlane, 23, first became ill as a teenager.

The Emmy-nominated actress said her daughter became afflicted with nausea, vomiting and crippling abdominal pain. McFarlane's mysterious illness baffled doctors, and Wilson said they went nearly 10 months before she finally got a diagnosis -- cyclic vomiting syndrome, or CVS, a neurological disorder characterized by a series of prolonged attacks of severe nausea and vomiting, with no apparent cause.

"It presented itself like a real bad case of food poisoning," Wilson explained. "It didn't go away for four or five days so because of that we went to the ER."

Wilson said emergency room doctors hydrated her daughter but none of the tests showed it was anything different.

"A month later, the exact same presentation happened and this was month after month after month for 10 months," she said.

Wilson kept a running log of her daughter's symptoms in multiple, 5-inch thick binders to note any progress or changes and to streamline the often-arduous check-in process at hospitals.

"I started looking for patterns," Wilson said. "When you are the parent of someone who is a chronic pain sufferer, you end up creating these binders for all of the hospital stays so you can keep track of every visit and any new thing that comes out."

Dr. Richards Boles, medical director at Courtagen Life Sciences -- a medical facility that specializes in genetic testing to find solutions for complicated neurological and metabolic diseases -- said McFarlane could have suffered years had it not been for her mom's tenacity.

"Serena was lucky because of the care and persistence of her mother," Boles said. "Most patients go many years without a diagnosis."

"The name gave us a direction to go in," Wilson said of receiving the diagnosis. "And it put us in a community of other people that seriously were going through the exact same thing stage by stage."

Motivated by her daughter's condition, the "Grey's Anatomy" star went one step further and directed an episode that mirrored her own scramble for a diagnosis for this mysterious disease.

"Being able to be on 'Grey's Anatomy' with all of those people able to watch it and hear it and say, 'Oh my God. That's what that is. I've heard of that. That's my kid. That's my husband. That's my aunt,'" Wilson said. "That means so much because I just remember what it meant to us."

She added, "[If] that's something that I can do sitting in this chair on the set, then my daughter has said, 'Go ahead. Go and do that.'"

Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Stephanie Steps Up and Meredith Moves On – Cosmopolitan.com

All I could think about during last night's episode of Grey's Anatomy is how it will feel to watch the series if the Affordable Care Act is fully repealed. To be very clear: I know there are far worse consequences of the bill than its impact on TGIT programming. Thousands will sicken and die. I could easily be one of them. All I'm trying to do is illuminate the lens through which I was watching the episode. And to be even clearer: The repeal isn't set in stone yet. Keep calling, keep writing, get louder.

To be fair, Grey's has always shied away from delving too deeply into the financial lives of its patients (they've been all too eager to dig into the financial health of the hospital though). We don't see patients frantically paging through bills once they've been discharged or calling their insurance companies to get procedures cleared. But it bears mentioning that the show's two most memorable episodes about financial hardship for patients both aired during the Bush administration: Joe the bartender's inability to pay for his expensive brain surgery and Ryan, the young boy who "trick or treated" for doctors and nurses to staff a pro bono surgery to give him ears. (Sidebar: That little boy grew into Dylan Minnette, who played Clay in 13 Reasons Why. What is time!?!?)

As the Affordable Care Act was rolled out, Grey's wove subtle references to it into its storytelling. At least one character talked about Obamacare specifically, and others mentioned finally being able to afford health care, or getting ongoing health issues checked out now that they were insured. So if Grey's wants to continue acknowledging America's health-care landscape next season, what would that even look like? Arizona performing a fetal surgery only to have to immediately stop because the baby's reached its lifetime limit already? Owen turning patients away from the emergency room? Doctors playing fast and loose with diagnoses so as to not document pre-existing conditions on patients' charts? SHOULD BE PRETTY FUN TO WATCH.

Anyway, it's not a great reflection on last night's episode that I had plenty of time in which to obsess over how the series might reflect our political climate a year from now, but here we are. I cannot get past my case of "She doesn't even go here!" when it comes to Eliza, and I'm frustrated that she continues to be used as a plot device rather than a person. She kisses Arizona! She meddles with residents! Who is she? GREAT QUESTION, NO ONE KNOWS.

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

It's especially frustrating when she decides that Ben doesn't take enough risks as a surgeon. This is a dude who literally did a C-section on a kitchen table and who was ballsy enough to take point in a room full of squabbling surgeons, like, three episodes ago, so I'm not sure what more he's supposed to be doing. One-handed surgery? Blindfolded, perhaps? He's always been confident, so this feels more like the writers trying to back-door justify why he hasn't necessarily had much to do this season.

Eliza's meddling doesn't stop there. ("Meddling" is probably unfair, because she literally is just doing her job, but she's doing a very, very, very, very, very confusing/irritating version of it.) She places herself squarely in the middle of a case of Alex and Stephanie's as they try to care for a young boy with a brain tumor whose parents are declining medical help for religious reasons. Alex is back to being his "Karev, Defender of Tiny Humans" self in a pretty awesome way, but Eliza gets right into the thick of it, telling him that he of all people should be "following the letter of the law" right now. Dude, ONLY MEREDITH CAN TALK TO ALEX THAT WAY. Or possibly Bailey. Alex and Stephanie play fast and loose to treat the child without his parents' consent. They save his life, but Stephanie loses her surgical privileges after chucking an iPad at the father's head. It is incredibly satisfying to watch.

In the middle of all of that business, Eliza tells Arizona that she has "naked plans" for her later, which is maybe the least sexy way I've ever heard a person invite someone to hook up. I'm all for Arizona getting hers! Just don't call it that. Arizona has a patient and can't make their sex date, so she and Eliza flirt and sexy tease each other in an elevator. Sorry, Eliza, but you have to earn elevator sexcapades. They do wind up having sex at the end of the episode and it's fine, whatever, sure, but it's just another moment that cements Eliza's status as a plot device, not a person.

Also, Maggie attempts a heart surgery that's basically impossible (and ultimately fails) to help her cope with her feelings about Meredith and Riggs? Or something?

This week, the early stage of Meredith's relationship with Riggs continues to be almost unbearably drawn out, but I was too worried about losing my health insurance and maybe dying to be too annoyed by it. Congratulations, everyone! We did it! Meredith starts putting pieces of her relationship with Derek aside to make room, literally and figuratively, for Riggs. She takes down the diagram of a spinal tumor that Derek once drew on her walls; she puts the Post-it note vows in a drawer.

It's an important moment in Meredith's healing process, and giving the tumor drawing to Amelia might mend the resentment she has toward Meredith for not calling her to Derek's deathbed to say good-bye. (Amelia hasn't brought it up in a while, but you know it's still been festering.) But goddamnit, it still hurts to see her tuck away reminders of her past with Derek. As time has gone on, I don't miss Derek as, essentially, Meredith's manic pixie dream boy. But the tumor picture and the Post-it vows show how fun it was to watch them when they were when truly a couple, working alongside one another. I miss that. Riggs and Meredith finally leave the hospital hand-in-hand at the end of the episode, so I'll say what I have been saying in at least six recaps this season: I guess they're finally going to really go for it now!

Also, Deluca tries to profess his love for Jo and I'd love to tell you more about that, but the second it started happening, I fell into a deep, deep sleep. WAKE ME UP WHEN SHE HAS A CONVERSATION WITH ALEX.

It pains me to type this, but here goes: This season of Grey's Anatomy hasn't been very good and the timing of that drop-off in quality couldn't be worse. We need smart, feminist, compelling shows to escape into, now more than ever! While it might be too late for the show to course-correct in season 13, it's not too late to start thinking about how season 14 could be better. Here are eight things Grey's Anatomy should do to shake off the cobwebs and recapture its magic.

Perhaps Ellen Pompeo needed to work less after the birth of her infant son, which would be totally understandable but her storylines should still count. Meredith is the Grey in Grey's Anatomy and she deserves more than what she's getting. Last season, we got to see her adjust to a world without McDreamy and cope with a life-altering assault. This season, we've seen her worry about Alex, get suspended from the hospital, and spin her wheels in a never-ending flirtation with Riggs. Ellen continues to nail the material she's given but she needs more to work with.

I've hated seeing characters like Webber, Alex, Bailey, and Arizona mishandled this season. Where has Alex been since he was released from prison? Why has the ball been dropped on digging into his relationship with Jo? Why have Webber and Bailey and Arizona spent so much time locked into the drama with Eliza, who at this point feels more like a plot device than a person? If it takes doing more bottle-style episodes, like the one with Jo, Arizona, and Bailey at the women's hospital, run with that!

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

These days, they're fully each other's person, and that's something we haven't really seen developed or explored this season. We know they've gotten much, much closer, and the subtext is that's a result of Derek's death and Alex's arrest. That needs to become less of a background story. Meredith's honest, compelling voicemail to Alex when he was considering taking a plea deal was one of the best moments of the season, and we need more of that. They don't have to hook up (although I maintain that they are an end-game couple), but since the scenes they have together are one of the only elements of Grey's that continues to pop, the show needs to spend more time with them and, not to harp on this, with Meredith and Alex as individuals too.

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

Remember when Grey's used to be all about doctors pulling one another into on-call rooms for nonstop hookups? I rewatched the Grey's pilot this week for the 12th anniversary of its airing (!!), and even though the characters barely knew each other, the show was crackling with sexual tension. I know a natural response to this might be that the characters are more mature now, which might explain the drop-off in sexual hijinks, but people in their 40s need hot sex too! And adding some younger characters and then actually taking the time to flesh them out (pun absolutely intended) might help with this as well.

Where are the hospital shootings? Where are the plane crashes? Where are the cut LVAD wires? So far, the major drama this season has come from "suspense" around Alex's arrest come on, was the series really going to put him in prison for 10 years? and the staffing shakeup in the residency director position. Grey's is literally asking us to stay invested in what amounts to an administrative staffing challenge for months, while turning major characters into cartoon-villain versions of themselves in the process. As it's done so, it's relied heavily on the stories of patients to drive the episodes, putting our characters' running stories in the backseat. I've loved some of the patient-driven storytelling the season, but it's frustrating when that comes at the cost of ignoring our favorite characters.

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

This one might sound overly specific, but aside from a handful of random patients and guest stars, Grey's has never featured a romantic relationship between men. There aren't too many unique romantic angles left for the show to explore but really taking the time to develop a gay male relationship would give the show a new dimension (and possibly allow for more scenes with hot dudes with their shirts off, which the show has been sorely lacking lately).

Remember when Grey's made a huge deal out of the fact that Leah Murphy would be rejoining the cast? She showed up in a few random episodes, was barely used, and then disappeared. By contrast, Maggie's mom has only been in two episodes, but the show has managed to make her three-dimensional through a genuinely compelling story, which has given us a long-overdue chance to get to know Maggie better, too. More moms, fewer Murphys, please.

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

If I squint and tilt my head to one side, I can see how maybe Grey's is trying to use Owen and Amelia's story to point out that in real life, couples fight and that's a normal part of relationships. But Owen and Amelia only fight. Do they even like each other?! They've been on a cycle of ignoring each other and then yelling at each other for weeks now, and it's tiresome. To make matters worse, we've seen Owen have nearly identical fights with Cristina, which means Kevin McKidd has been stuck doing the same material for years. Again, maybe Grey's is trying to tell stories about how Owen has patterns that sabotage his relationships, and I applaud their effort to be realistic in that regard. But it's gotten old and I'm over it.

Grey’s Anatomy Enlists Matthew Morrison for Mystery Role: Who … – E! Online

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Weinstein Company

The halls of Grey Sloan Memorial are about to get a bit more gleeful.

Before season 13 comes to a close, Grey's Anatomy will be welcoming Glee alum Matthew Morrison for a guest star role, E! News has confirmed. True to Shonda Rhimes form, the details surrounding his character are being kept under wraps for the time being, butthe actor did reveal via Instagram that he was busy at work on an unnamed TV series playing Dr. Paul Stadler.

Morrison's involvement with the long-running ABC series was first revealed when photos began surfacing on social media showing the actor shooting a scene with Justin Chambers on location in Los Angeles with Kevin McKidd as director.

Given that his character will clearly share scenes outside of the hospital with Alex, along with the continued looming threat of Jo's (Camilla Luddington) abusive doctor ex finally finding her location, many are speculating that Dr. Paul Stadler could, in fact, be man of Jo's nightmares. Naturally, ABC had nothing to say about that speculation, but with TVLine's recent report that Grey's was looking for an actor to come aboard at the end of the seasonwith the potential to return in the fallas a new doctor who is "appealing, charismatic and charming," but also "manipulative" with a "scary dark side," all signs seem to point to Jo's husband.

Since Glee wrapped in 2015, Morrison has been making the guest star rounds with spots on Younger and The Good Wife.

Who do you think Morrison's character will be? Share your theories in the comments below!

Greys Anatomy Season 13, Episode 18 Spoilers: Be Still My Soul Maggie, Diane Struggle Through Failing Health; Richard to Forgive Bailey?

Greys Anatomy season 13s episode 18, titled Be Still My Soul, will follow Maggie and her mother Diane as they struggle through the latters failing health. Meanwhile, Richard will come to terms with Baileys betrayal. Perhaps it is possible that he may finally forgive Bailey.

The synopsis for Be Still My Soul posted on TV Guide reads, Maggie's (Kelly McCreary) mom's health deteriorates, and the doctors are at odds over how to treat her. Meanwhile, Richard (James Pickens Jr.) comes to grips with Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) betrayal over the Residency Program.

The upcoming episode will put focus on Maggie and her mother, Diane Pierce (LaTanya Richardson Jackson) as they struggle through her condition. Maggies colleagues will also find themselves divided over how to treat her.

In the previous episode, titled 'Til I Hear It From You, Diane returned to Seattle for a mastectomy to be performed by Jackson (Jesse Williams) after receiving chemotherapy at home. It seems that Maggie was left in the dark about her mothers true health condition that she has breast cancer. Dianes surgery became complicated leaving Maggie devastated.

During an interview with E! News, McCreary hinted at what to expected from Maggie in the upcoming episodes. The 33-year old actress said, "I think, first and foremost, Maggie is the brightest person she knows And she's going to try to solve her problems herself. And of course, when you try to do everything yourself, you get tuckered out."

Meanwhile, Richard is set to come to terms with Baileys betrayal after the latter attempted to mend their broken friendship. It would be interesting to see if Richard can finally forgive Bailey for going behind his back and taking his Residency Program away in favor of Eliza (Marika Dominczyk).

Greys Anatomy season 13s episode 18, titled Be Still My Soul, is scheduled to air on March 20, 2017 on ABC. It was directed by Ellen Pompeo and written by Meg Marinis. It will be followed by episode 19, titled "What's Inside", scheduled to be released on April6 and directed by Nzingha Stewart.

Anatomy Of A Decision Series Highlights Skills Necessary To Climb To The Top Of The Corporate Ladder – Benzinga

GLG recently produced a series of videos that include interviews with a number of business leaders who have different backgrounds in the business world. GLG, the worlds leading membership network for professional learning, focused its Anatomy of a Decision series on the decision-making process that these leaders used to make some of the most difficult choices of their careers.

Each of the participants in the video series offered advice about how future leaders should approach critical decisions. Several of the participants also discussed ways they wish they had done things differently throughout their careers as well. Heres a rundown of some of the highlights from the five-part series.

For former Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) CEO Jeff Kindler, the key to his business success was an open mind.

I started saying I should be open to whatever comes along, Kindler said. And that led me down all kinds of different paths I never would have predicted.

Former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson said preparation and confidence go a long way in the business world.

When you have to confront powerful people about unpleasant things that they dont want to talk about like their personal finances or their campaign finances, you develop a kind of calm steadiness that allows you not to get horribly nervous, Abramson said.

Pamela Thomas-Graham, former Credit Suisse Group AG (ADR) (NYSE: CS)board member, CEO of CNBC and the first ever African-American partner at McKinsey & Co., had some advice for anyone who is subjected to discrimination in the workplace. She said anger is often not constructive, but direct, open dialogue can be.

You can be angry and you can be frustrated, but if you really want to change peoples behavior you have to meet them where they are, she said.

Jeffrey Brenzel, dean of undergraduate admissions at Yale, said companies often underestimate the importance of the hiring process.

Its not who you fire, its who you hire that is going to make the difference between success and failure for your company, Brenzel said. And how those decisions are made and whos making them and what the process is for making those decisions I think could not conceivably be more critical.

Jake Sullivan, a former advisor to former President Barack Obama, discussed the importance of removing irrational emotions from his decision-making process when discussing the Iranian nuclear deal with the president.

Being able to make that decision to recommend to the president that we go ahead and do this deal required stepping back from the anxiety, the emotion, the nerve-wracking idea that maybe we were going to screw this thing up and actually systematically running a cost benefit analysis, he said.

Collectively, these five leaders have decades of experience at the highest level of the business world. Despite the fact that all of them have unique backgrounds and areas of expertise, the themes of adaptability, preparation, discipline, respect, and critical thinking were common among their discussions. In order to have a chance at reaching the pinnacle of success in any field, young entrepreneurs and aspiring executives should focus on honing these universal skills on a daily basis.

The anatomy of a Covid-19 ski holiday how will resorts make it safe? – Telegraph.co.uk

Experts weigh in on the planned protocol for chalets, chair lifts, lessons and aprs ski next season

The coronavirus pandemic has thrown the worlds future travel plans into turmoil. The uncertainty about how, when and where we will be able to go on holiday again remains profound, with debates about air bridges, travel bubbles and quarantine periods making headlines daily but still no clear light at the end of the Channel Tunnel.

While the future of summer holidays still hangs in the balance, those who offer ski holidays and operate in the winter months have a bit more time to plan for life in the future Covid-19 world.

Despite many still recovering from the impact of the premature end of last season and customers still concerned about whether it's safe to book a ski holiday for next winter, there are plans afoot as to how our annual pilgrimage to the slopes might look in the 2020/21.

Heres what the experts and those in the industry think the ski holidays of the future could look like.

If one things for certain its that some level of social distancing measures will be in place in resorts across the globe. Recently the Norwegian resort of Myrkdalen opened for a fleeting end to the winter season and resorts in New Zealand have been given permission to open as snow begins to fall in the southern hemisphere, while some resorts in the Alps look set to offer skiing on glaciers this summer. All have adopted a new set of restrictions that could provide a blueprint for those planning for next season.

Measures implemented include social distancing in lift queues and limits on the number of people in gondolas or riding on chairlifts permitting only people from the same household to use a lift together.

Hygiene standards and cleaning protocols on lifts have also been ramped up and visitors are asked to wear face coverings and gloves luckily this is often the case in ski resorts already.

Looking ahead, it is likely that resorts will recommend lift passes and equipment hire are booked in advance to reduce queues at offices and pressures on staff. And as governments reveal guidance for reopening the hospitality and leisure sectors, many resorts are working on introducing technology to make contactless and cashless payments available throughout both villages and on the mountain including lift stations, restaurants, bars and hotels.

When it comes to public transport, as was the case at the end of last season when the pandemic first approached Europe, the blueprint for resorts moving forward is likely to include restricted capacity on ski buses and changes to timetables. The Italian resort of Courmayeur has revealed it will also be encouraging guests to pre-book private airport transfers, to reduce the number of people on large coach transfers and public transport.

The Austrian resort of Ischgl, which has been identified as a key epicentre for the virus in Europe, was the first in the world to say it will be reconsidering its approach to party tourism. We will question developments of the past years and, where necessary, make corrections, said Werner Kurz, the resorts mayor. That means more quality and less party tourism, prioritising skiers and fewer day-trippers on buses who only come to party.

Hopefully by next winter all restaurants and bars will be back open, some in Alps have already been granted permission to lift the shutters. But its likely there will be some restrictions in place two metres spaces between tables, requirements to pre-book and more options to take food away. Large and wild aprs parties will have to be reconsidered and the focus may shift to a more sophisticated off-the-slope offering in resorts instead.

How food will be served in resorts appears to be one key area of discussion, with many operators and experts believing self-catering could see a boom.

The benefits are obvious no shared dining or living space, no external staff preparing meals, control over your own hygiene standards and the possibility of spending an entire weeks ski holiday solely in the company of your own family.

Our focus is already on the types of holidays that enable clients to limit their contact with others. For example we always recommend self-drive with Eurotunnel, so effectively clients can get from their home to their accommodation in the Alps without the need to be in contact with anyone. Our self-catered apartments also allow clients their own space, so again they can limit contact with others, said Xavier Schouller, managing director from French self-catered specialists Peak Retreats and Ski Collection.

However the traditional chalet holiday will likely remain a popular choice for British skiers and snowboarders.

Bramble Ski, which operates both catered and self-catered chalets in some of Europes top resorts, suggests more guests will request contactless service in chalets, rather than having a traditional host present at meal times. Certainly there will be a period where people will feel more comfortable with less services and we will accommodate that, said Natash Robertson, co-founder of Bramble Ski.

We are currently proposing contactless service to our customers if they would prefer this. We have done this before for guests who have booked fully staffed accommodation at the top end of our portfolio. Tables are laid up, food served and cleared, rooms cleaned and turned down without the guests ever seeing a member of staff. Lower down the scale, meals can be prepared and left in the property for the guests to serve themselves. Cleaning teams can also be sent in only when the guests are not in the chalet, she said.

Other services that could be available on a contactless basis include in-chalet ski and boot delivery service and lift pass delivery service taking the need to walk around a resort on arrival and queue with other holidaymakers out of the equation.

As the interest in catering for ourselves increases so might the popularity of self-drive trips as people remain nervous about flying.

Thousands of Britons drive to the Alps each year, with families in particular appreciating the flexibility it provides. Popular French resorts such as Flaine, Morzine and La Clusaz, are just eight hours from the Calais end of the Eurotunnel, during which time a group would be able to avoid contact with other travellers. Self-drive removes much of the stress of packing too, particularly if youve booked self-catering accommodation. Guests can stock up on food and supplies in the large valley towns before heading up into resorts, where supermarkets tend to be smaller and more expensive; whats more you can even take a freezer box stocked full from home.

"The majority of our clients are keen to self drive, we hope this will be an even more popular option for skiers next winter, as they may be less keen to fly," said Jane Bolton, managing director of Erna Low.

While DIY ski trips will be the preferred choice for some, others will continue to favour the service and amenities staying in hotels on the slopes can offer.

Luckily, compared to ski chalets, most of which operate solely in the winter months, many of the hotels in the Alps and beyond are hoping to be able to reopen this summer, albeit primarily for domestic travellers. This will give them a trial run at adopting new rules and restrictions before the peak winter season hits.

The Naturhotel Forsthofgut in the Austrian resort of Leogang is one such hotel it has shared some of the measures guests can expect. On arrival, guests will be greeted by staff wearing smiling Forsthofgut branded masks or visors. For guests, on request, a Forsthofgut safety kit - face masks, antibacterial gloves and hand-sanitiser spray will be available. Staff members have undergone a rigorous hygiene training programme, and regular refresher courses will be carried out.

Some hotels are looking to increase the amount of room service they offer, while the breakfast buffet is likely a thing of the past and hotel restaurants are set to be redesigned to allo
w tables to be at a safe distance from each other. Hotel managements are also preparing systems to make the reservation and check-in process totally contactless.

Hotels and chalets at the luxury-end of the spectrum, where guests are used to the likes of a ski concierge service and dining in private, will inevitably up their game further with the rest of the market looking on for inspiration.

Next winter guests at Ultima Collections uber-glamorous chalets in Courchevel, Crans-Montana andMegve will have their equipment disinfected daily, including skis, boots, hats and gloves.

Secluded properties with a small number of rooms that a small group of friends and relatives can book for exclusive use will be very successful. Requests for bespoke services, and private jet or helicopter trips are already increasing, said Max-Herv George and Byron Baciocchi, founders of Ultima Collection.

Certainly those with the budget for it will inevitably look towards private jet transfers, heliskiing and off-piste guided days in an effort to avoid busy lifts and slopes. Companies such as Pelorus, which offers bespoke adventures and exclusive ski trips starting from 9,500, are poised ready to cater for them. There will be more demand for quieter ski regions and remote locations. Well be sending out clients to remote lodges that can offer a chance for people to ski in lesser known resorts or access off-piste for more advanced skiers, said Geordie Mackay-Lewis, co-founder of Pelorus.

Off-the-beaten track doesnt always come with a hefty price tag though, in fact many lesser-known resorts around Europe can offer great-value ski holidays away from the major hubs, which might struggle to contain capacity and implement social distancing. Ski resorts in the likes of Norway, Eastern Europe, North America, the Pyrenees and less frequented parts of the Alps are likely to see a spike in interest.

Ski and snowboard lessons form a crucial part of many peoples ski holidays, especially beginners. Often carried out in groups and in designated parts of the mountain there are plans afoot to ensure ski schools can adhere to new regulations and social distancing.

The Ecole du Ski France is the countrys largest ski school, with thousands of British students each winter. All ESF resorts will see social distancing implemented by reducing the need for customers to visit and congregate in offices but to meet in open spaces on the slopes. Plans being drawn up during this summer will also see measures put in place at meeting points to ease crowding. Group and Private lessons will be conducted with more space in between participants if required, said Mark Neville, business manager for the ESF in the UK.

More advanced skiers and snowboarders, who attended courses and workshops in the mountains or use guiding services for off-piste days, will also see changes.

We released our dates about two weeks ago and since then our early bookings and general enquiries have been up on previous years. It seems to us that people, especially the ones that missed out on March and April holidays this year, are desperate to get back on skis, said Warren Smith, founder of the Warren Smith Ski Academy, which runs courses across the globe for advanced and intermediate skiers.

Going forward we will still run eight-person groups, but our six-person group size will become the new normal. I predict though within a year this will shrink even further to four people per group, said Warren.

The smaller groups always have the flexibility to go further afield and go off piste. In a four person group going off-piste is so much safer and controlled compared to an eight person group. Smaller groups get more specific tuition and while yes the prices will go up the value will be reflected.

Warren predicts further still there will be increased demand for private lessons, with people prepared to spend a bit more for the luxury of knowing they are isolated from others.

Tour operators and their staff in chalets, hotels and resorts will play a vital role in the continued battle against the virus.

We are really hopeful the same number of jobs will be available and well recruit the levels we need to ensure we deliver the exceptional customer service were known for. The season isnt scheduled to start until November, so although well be later than usual recruiting our teams, we have time, said a spokesperson from Crystal Ski Holidays, the UKs biggest winter tour operator.

While the recruitment process, which usually begins in June, has been put on hold this year there will be increased training, focusing on hygiene and social distancing, for those hoping to work in the mountains next season. We will need to follow government advice regarding social distancing and requirements for workplace safety for all our employees. So we await these over the next few weeks before we finalise the roles and job descriptions, said Rob Dixon from Ski World.

We will continue to work with our resort, accommodation and travel partners to plan a ski holiday experience that meets all current safety measures, read a statement from HotelPlan, which operates Inghams, Ski Total and Esprit Ski.

There will be greater focus on more client-friendly booking terms and conditions, to give clients the confidence to book. Refundable deposits, refunds or deferrals available where previously not offered after payment of the final balance should resorts have to close said Rupert Longsdon, CEO of The Oxford Ski Company.

Its a sentiment shared across the industry, where operators are keen to reinstate customer confidence in travel by easing the likes of final payment deadlines and booking alteration fees.

The last few months of uncertainty has shown us that our customers want the reassurance that their money is safe and need to trust us to do the right thing. Inghams has over 85 years experience getting skiers to the slopes and when the time comes to get back to the mountains, our expert team will be there every step of the way, said HotelPlan.

Other service providers are following suit and offering greater flexibility. When the virus hit the Alps, forcing all businesses to close, many independent companies adapted quickly and reassured customers by processing refunds on the likes of equipment hire, lift passes and lessons and allowed credit to be transferred free of charge to next winter.

While travellers will be looking for peace of mind with the implementation of new rules and services by resorts and operators many will find comfort in the familiar. Our core package structure of flight, accommodation, transfer and ski packs will remain, read a reassuring statement from Crystal Ski Holidays.

We continue to follow the advice of the Government and will align to any new health and safety guidelines and measures which may be introduced. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff remains our highest priority, it continued.

Whether the novelty of new social distancing measures, isolated days on the slopes, contactless services and do-it-yourself packages will wear thin remains to be seen but one thing is for certain and thats the ski holidays of the future will need to adapt to the new normal.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Fans Are Convinced Maggie Is Destined to Follow Richard Webber down the Road to Alcoholism – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Season 16 ofGreys Anatomyis proving to be just what fans were asking for. Meredith Greys (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister,Maggie(Kelly McCreary), realizes that her great love is surgerynot Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams). Fans hate her with Jackson, so they rejoiced over that break-up.

Viewers are predicting a new storyline for Maggie that will give her character the depth they are looking for. Lets take a look at why fans think Maggie is going to follow her father,Richard Webber(James Pickens, Jr.), down the road to alcoholism.

Richard Webbers storyline this season is circling alcoholism. An old friend of his from Alcoholics AnonymousGemma (Jasmine Guy) is back in his life. She now works at the same hospital as him, Pac North, and is causing issues between him and Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen).

Gemmas AA sponsor recently passed away, and Richard supported Gemma in her loss. Now, Richards niece, Sabie, tragically died after reappearing in his lifeGemma is there for him.

Maggie is going to become an alcoholic like Richard was, wrote onefan on Reddit, and he will come to take care of her; he will be her mentor.

Fans are confident that if Maggie becomes an alcoholic, Richard will help her recover. Showrunner, Krista Vernoff already alluded to a significant episode for Richard, so this could be it.

We have big episode for him this season, Vernofftold TVLine. I dont feel like hes quite been given his due.

With alcoholism as a focal point of the show this season, it is highly plausible that Richard helps Maggie after she hits rock bottom. This storyline could lead to the massive episode for Richard.

With all of the exciting things that happened in the latest episodeNovember 14, 2019 of Greys Anatomy, some fans may have missed an essential detail about Maggie.

The woman is binge drinking in the middle of the day at a hotel bar. We know there often is a lot of drinking on the show. These surgeons deal with a lot of stress daily, so its not surprising we see them at a bar after work.

However, Maggies drinking looks like more than just a few after-work drinks. She is already drunk when Jackson helps her home. Instead of stopping, she continues drinking when she arrives home.

After Jackson almost kisses her, she throws him out and screams that she never wants to see him again. Although that was probably a normal response to a run-in with an ex-boyfriend, it could imply more.

Exhibiting signs of irritability and extreme mood swings are a common sign of alcoholism, according to theAlcohol Rehab Guide.

I think she could become an alcoholic, wrote one Redditor. It runs in the family. Richard is a recovering alcoholic, and Maggie is his daughter.

Now that would be a good plot for Maggie, another fan replied. So much more interesting than her relationship drama.

What got me the most in this episode was seeing a twinge of darkness in Maggie, added another Reddit user, which, for character development, has great potential.

Alcoholism can be an inherited marker/trait, another fan wrote. It could bring Maggie and Richard closer, and like you said, give Maggie a storyline.

It sounds like most fans agree that Maggie continues to drink too much and that Richard comes to her rescue. Find out what happens next on Greys Anatomy on Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Greys Anatomy Reportedly Kept Alex Karev Alive for One Simple Reason – Glamour

Warning: Greys Anatomy spoilers ahead.

If youre one of those Greys Anatomy fans who flip-flopped from fearing the writers would kill off Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) to wishing they had after finding out his fate, listen up.

According to a source that spoke with Us Weekly, there's a very simple reason the Greys Anatomy writers sent Evil Spawn off to live on a farm with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and their two kids after Justin Chambers announced his exit in the middle of season 16.

The reason he wasnt killed off is because Shonda Rhimes is leaving the door open for a return, in any capacity, if he wants to come back, an alleged insider told the publication. (If youre wondering why they mention Rhimes, who is no longer the showrunner of the long-running series, its because she still has approval privileges as the executive producer.)

Though Chambers announced in his statement from January that Greys had already aired his final scenes, they were ultimately able to get him to loan his voice-over to the farewell episode.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff expressed her appreciation for the actor and character in a recent statement. We have loved writing Alex. And we have loved watching Justin Chamberss nuanced portrayal of him, she tweeted. For 16 seasons, 16 years, we have grown up alongside Alex Karev. We have been frustrated by his limitations and we have been inspired by his growth and we have come to love him deeply and to think of him as one of our very best friends. We will miss him terribly. And we will always be grateful for his impact, on our show, on our hearts, on our fans, on the world.

Though Camilla Luddington, who plays Karevs soon-to-be-ex-wife Jo on the series, has yet to release an official statement, costar Ellen Pompeo (the titular Meredith Grey) called the exit the best possible story line before reuniting with former castmate T.R. Knight.

Whether or not the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (or the fans) would be happy to see Karev again after all this remains to be seen....

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Jesse Williams Accused Of Violent Rages By Ex – Daily Beast

Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams has been labelled a rage-fuelled individual with poor parenting skills who maintains a 'revolving door' of women and exposed his children to a terrifying road rage incident in which he threatened to kill a neighbor.

The allegations are contained in explosive court documents obtained by dailymail.com.

The allegations against Williams, 36, come from his ex-wife, Aryn Drake-Lee, 34, who divorced him in April.

The allegations are the latest salvo in a bitter custody battle over their children, aged three and one.

Drake-Lee also claims that the actor has cynically started posting photographs of his children on social media to bolster his brand.

Drake-Lee claimed the road rage incident happened on July 18. Drake-Lee claims that following argument with a neighbor, Williams 'aggressively pursued him in his car with their two children inside and allegedly threatened to kill him.

I was so alarmed that Jesse exposed our children to danger, Drake-Lee says in the filing, in which she is seeking sole custody of the children after their 14-year relationship broke down.

Drake-Lee claims Williams has had a revolving door of intimate partners since the divorce and has made no effort to keep knowledge of his multiple girlfriends from their children.

In previously filed court documents Williams set out to prove he was a doting dad by listing his kid's nicknames and favorite foods.

Drake-Lee is also unhappy that Williams now regularly posts photos of their children on social media to promote an image of himself: Jesse, a story teller by profession, appears to be trying to create some sort of fairytale parenting scenario that does not tell the complete story, the real story of parenting, she says in the filing, according to dailymail.com.

Drake-Lee is asking the court for a full-day mediation session to determine a 'path forward' between her and Williams.

When the former couple's divorce first hit the headlines, it was reported that Williams cheated on Drake-Lee with multiple women while they were married and he's been linked with his one-time co-worker, actress Minka Kelly.

METLZER: The Anatomy of a Comeback – NHL.com

On Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers trailed the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-2, midway through the third period and then exploded for five goals to skate off with a 7-4 victory. The next night in Uniondale against the New York Islanders, a comeback bid fell short in a 5-3 loss.

In both games, the Flyers starting goaltender (Brian Elliott on Saturday, Carter Hart on Sunday) was not at his best. Both opponents entered the game on hot streaks: the Blue Jackets were on a six-game point streak, while the Islanders brought in a six-game winning streak. In both games, the Flyers scored first only to subsequently fall into multi-goal deficits. So why did the Flyers succeed in Saturday's comeback bid and fail on Sunday? In a nutshell, the answer lies in what happened in the first two-plus periods. Against Columbus, the Flyers outplayed their opponent even prior to the comeback. In New York, the Flyers got outplayed before a too-little-and-too-late push. Here a look inside how the two games unfolded.Saturday: Persistence Pays Off vs. ColumbusThe Flyers largely outplayed Columbus over the majority of the first 42 minutes of the game. That was scant comfort, however, as Josh Anderson pounced on the carom of a Dean Kukan shot off the end boards and deposited it into the net at 2:14 of the third period."It is smoke and mirrors that we are up by 2 at that time. I just don't think we played well enough. I don't think we played hard enough," Columbus head coach John Tortorella said.Flyers goaltender Elliott, who had played brilliantly in each of his two previous starts, was not as his best on this night. However, he battled for pucks and both he and the rest of the team felt the game was still winnable."The feeling was we were going to come back. Even if they got that 4th one there, I thought the guys really stuck with it and played to our strengths and I think I don't know if I deserve that win so much, but the guys definitely did," Elliott said. The ice was tilted throughout most of the third period, with the Flyers blasting 17 shots on goal to just five for Columbus. Overall, Philly had a 35-17 shot edge over the final 40 minutes of the game. Finally, with time ticking down near nine minutes left in regulation, the Flyers narrowed the deficit to 4-3 at 10:43.Travis Sanheim pinched in to receive a pass from team captain Claude Giroux but fired a shot wide of the cage. Giroux and Hayes combined to win a battle behind the net. Hayes quickly swooped out in front of the net but was denied by goalie Joonas Korpisalo. Giroux reclaimed the puck and passed it to Shayne Gostisbehere at center point.Ghost quickly hammered a one-timer at the net. The shot hit Columbus' Nick Foligno and, still with plenty of steam on it, deflected up and into the net. Korpisalo didn't have a chance."One up. The biggest thing was how we responded going down two goals in the third. Maybe some past games, we would have folded and gave that one away," Gostisbehere said.At 12:37, the Flyers pulled even at 4-4. James van Riemsdyk has always been a streak scorer. After experiencing a rough start to the season -- zero points through seven games despite a slew of chances -- he now has three goals and four points in his last two games.JVR tallied the Flyers' second goal of the game, a power play marker, that briefly tied the score at 2-2 before the Blue Jackets reclaimed the lead a mere 45 seconds later. Now he pulled the Flyers even for a second time.On the play, van Riemsdyk parked near the net and re-directed a shot that a pinching Ivan Provorov sent at the net. Jakub Voracek earned the secondary assist."It's always weird how those things happen. You feel a little snake-bitten and try not to let you affect you mentally but just those little subtleties and different things that you start squeezing a little too tightly. It felt nice to get one last game and carry it over to tonight," van Riemsdyk said.At 14:24, with the Flyers skating shorthanded, Kevin Hayes put Philadelphia ahead, 5-4. The Wells Fargo Center was temporarily quieted as Sean Couturier, one of the team's most crucial penalty killers, was sent to box for tripping at 14:03. The Flyers, 4-for-4 on the penalty kill up to this point, would have to kill another one. As it turned out, they'd do even more than that. With Couturier in the box, Hayes lost the first faceoff of the kill. Columbus had want what they wanted: instant puck possession in the Flyers' zone. The Blue Jackets had the puck up high. At 14:16, Hayes picked off a D-to-D pass from Cam Atkinson intended for Ryan Murray and saw nothing but open ice ahead of him.On the shorthanded breakaway, Hayes went in 1-on-1 with Korpisalo. The center went to his backhand then back to his forehand. Korpisalo made the initial save with his pad, but Hayes stayed with the rebound and flipped it over the goalie to put the Flyers ahead, 5-4."No actual move [in mind], I just wasn't going to shoot it. He stopped two earlier with shots. He made a save and luckily the rebound was right there," Hayes said.Four games ago, Flyers head coach Alain Vigneult moved Hayes down in the lineup from a line with Giroux. The team captain moved from left wing to center a line with van Riemsdyk and Voracek. Hayes centered a line with rookie Joel Farabee and Scott Laughton (who sustained a broken finger in the second period of Saturday's game, and will be out a projected four weeks). Hayes responded well to the new assignment."I moved him onto a different line. Took him off the powerplay. Told him to focus on playing a 200-foot game and play well on the PK, which he has done for us the last three games. It's funny how it works. Offensively, he's getting more looks and better looks. He found a way to finally find the back of the net, which is big for us," Vigneault said of Hayes' fourth goal of the young season. The Wells Fargo Center crowd was now in a frenzy. The players and coaches on the Flyers bench, although exultant in celebrating the Hayes' shortie, quickly got refocused with 5:36 still left to play. Subsequently, the Flyers closed out the game in strong fashion. With 1:39 left in the game, Michael Raffl sealed the deal with an empty netter after an initial attempt by Hayes was blocked. In the final 41 seconds of the game, Pierre-Luc Dubois took a slashing penalty. With Korpisalo back in the net, the Flyers' power play (2-for-4 on this night) cashed in quickly. Off a pass from Matt Niskanen Travis Konecny fired a deflected shot from the right side that found the net for his fifth goal of the season, tying him with Oskar Lindblom for the team lead.Vigneault was asked if there one particular play that turned the tide in the third period; perhaps the Gostisbehere goal that started the comeback or the Hayes shorthander that tied it.The coach replied, "I don't think there was one specific turning point. I think we deserved to win this game. We were the better team. Had a real strong second period, tightened it up, gave up that third goal. We gave up an early goal in the third and our guys just kept playing and kept battling. Basically after two periods, that's what we said. We were going to find a way to win this game and that's what we did."Sunday: Unable to Dig out of hole in Long IslandEntering Sunday's game, the Flyers brought in the NHL's top differential in shot attempts and high-danger chances. On this night, however, they'd have much of the pace dictated to them by the Islanders rather than the other way around."I think this was the first game this season where we really got outskated," Jakub Voracek said. "We didn't skate bad, but they skated better than we did. They came with a lot of forechecking pressure and played physical."Added Vigneault, "They got their first man in on our D, and we were turning pucks over."The Flyers struggled in puck battles on this night. There were a few too many defensive breakdowns and Philly did not get the starting goaltending they needed to weather the storm. After starting out the regular season with three straight strong performances including the first shutout of his NHL career, Carter Hart has struggled in ea
ch of his last three outings and has been pulled in the second period of two. On Sunday, he stopped just nine of 14 shots. One goal was off a preventable rebound. Another was a heavy but unscreened point shot. On other shots, he was a little bit off his angles.Elliott relieved Hart at 8:46 of the second period. Elliott kept the score where it was (5-2) even as he was severely tested multiple times in the third period. Overall, Elliott stopped all 19 shots he faced. He held the score at 5-2 but the team in front of him wasn't able to make much headway. With 2:56 left in the game, Voracek won a puck battle behind the net and van Riemsdyk passed out in front to an open Giroux, who scored from prime range to narrow the deficit to 5-3. The Flyers immediately pulled Elliott for a 6-on-5 attack but drew no closer. Final shots were 33-31 in the Islanders' favor.
