Wedding Band Preview: Very Funny and Talented

TBS has another chance to prove it's Very Funny tonight, as Wedding Band premieres at 10 p.m. EST.

The one-hour long sitcom stars Brian Austin Green, Harold Perrineau and Melora Hardin and centers on a group of friends who bust loose every weekend at weddings and Bar Mitzvahs, having fun and meeting their fair share of women in the process.

Based on a group of friends, who have jobs and responsibilities during the week but break loose on the weekends and become the best wedding band you’ll find. Of course there’s also lots of romantic entanglements and other mishaps that pop up to keep the laughs coming.

In anticipation of the series, and having been entertained by the opening episodes I've already screened, I recently talked to Green and Hardin about the series...

TV Fanatic:  I was really impressed that the band is not actually laughable. You guys are very good. So talk to me about that being an important element of the show.
Brian Austin Green: We can play comedy songs, which only kind of last for so long, or we can stick with the element of what the show is, which is that our job is to make this believable, our job is to make this band honestly the most kickass wedding band anybody has ever seen. And I'm just saying that alone there's comedy in that. Like yes, they're a stadium style wedding band. I mean, you just never hear or see anything like that, let alone sit at a wedding [and] hear these amazing grand songs, and have pyrotechnics and confetti cannons going off. And throwing guitar picks out to the crowd.

Melora Hardin: Right, and they've got Rutherford breathing down their neck that it better be damn good... and that's why she takes them on in the first place. And they care so much about the event in a whole other way than Roxie cares about the event, but I'm glad you recognize that because they are awesome.

And when I looked at the episodes I was just like, it's so interesting to me that the show has all this music in it but it feels really fresh and it's actually kind of fresh because it's using music in just the way that music is. It's not like we're breaking into song like Glee does, like musical style, but it's just using music in the storyline in a truthful, honest way.

TVF: You made me re-appreciate Air Supply, so thank you.
BAG: Damn right we did!

Grey’s Anatomy Sneak Peeks: The Formula

In a sneak peek from next week's Grey's Anatomy, the doctors ponder how aggressively to go after those responsible for the crash - and learn the surprisingly cold realities of how that might be achieved.

In "Second Opinion," the doctors sit down with their legal counsel, featuring guest star Andrew Leeds (Bones), and are blown away by the advice they receive. Some are more receptive to it than others.

Will they accept the settlement or pursue more? Should they? There's no easy answer.

Check out that scene, and a second clip featuring Alex's favorite struggling intern, and a third featuring Cristina's return to Seattle and the awkward sit-down with Owen that follows, below:

Follow this link link for our official Grey's Anatomy review of this Thursday's unorthodox Meredith / Cristina-focused episode, then check out two promos for the upcoming "Second Opinion" as well.

Blue Bloods Review: Evil Comes Home

"Nightmares" featured its scary moments, but its sad ones were far more powerful.

I expected more from an episode dealing with voodoo and the Catholic church. It felt as though the crime and the attacker were barely touched upon. I found myself hoping for more background on the Catholic church's stance on the voodoo community or the details of Tusain's exorcisms.

Danny Investigates a Strange Stabbing

The end came too quickly and too neatly wrapped. With that one voodoo ceremony we were left to believe his demons had left but other than the initial attack we never saw much of them to begin with. The hour missed the mark.

It actually seemed to focus more on introducing us to Danny's new partner than the demon story. Speaking of which…

My first impression of Detective Kate Lansing was that I wanted to order her a cheeseburger. Boy, she was skinny. I wished her background in Haiti was used to give us more background into this world and develop her character a bit more. Of course, being a former member of Internal Affairs leaves all types of possibilities for conflict down the line.

But seeing Jackie at the end broke my heart. Danny had a string of revolving partners that first season and none of them clicked before Jackie. The two have great chemistry as partners and friends and I'm really going to miss her. At least we got a farewell scene and a goodbye hug. I'd love to see Jackie return but from published reports of the actress' conflicts on the show I think it's highly unlikely.

Garrett's issues this week were surprising. I didn't see that coming and apparently neither did Garrett, as he explains to Frank in this Blue Bloods quote

The only bells going off were from good whiskey. | permalink

Poor guy definitely got played and I loved that Frank was willing to have Henry go a little old school to get the problem solved. I couldn't take losing Jackie and Garrett all in the same episode. That would just be cruel.

Once again we got some more time with Jamie and his story line was the saddest of all. My grandfather had Alzheimer's and it is a horribly nasty disease. It's as though the person you know disappears while they're still standing in front of you.

Malcolm was certainly stuck in the revolving door of the system and it's scary to think he could just be released over and over again.

I was a little surprised that Jamie didn't recognize Malcolm's stance as a hockey pose right away. It appeared so obvious to me.

The Sunday dinner getting cut short was disappointing, especially since I wanted to hear the back story about why Erin is so into Halloween. I did love the Wizard of Oz themed costumes they wore.

So was I the only one who felt the demon story fell a bit short? And are you willing to give the new detective a chance?

Revenge Sneak Peek: On the Front Porch …

... some pretty steamy stuff is about to go down on! Proceed at your own risk!

It looks like a certain couple takes their relationship to a new level Sunday.

After watching the start of Emily and Aiden's hot and highly-anticipated hookup above, one wonders what made her finally give in (besides the accent of course), and what events made this particular day so difficult.

"Rough day?" Aiden asks, checking on our beloved heroine after another Revenge-filled outing. "You keep asking me that," Emily responds when he asks if she's alright. "And you never give me an answer," Aiden says.

Looks like she finally has an answer of sorts.

Anyone else excited for tomorrow night? For more scenes from "Exposure," head on over to our Revenge clips page, then share your predictions and thoughts on Emily and Aiden in the comments below!

The Following Trailer: Viewer Discretion Advised

Fox has released a new extended trailer for The Following and - you may have heard this before but it's really meant this time around - viewer discretion is advised. Seriously.

The drama stars Kevin Bacon as a FBI agent forced back into action because a serial killer he once put away (played eerily well by James Purefoy) has escaped... and is creating a new cult of serial killers.

The Following premieres Monday, January 21 at 9 p.m. and it's easily the best new drama of the 2012-2013 season. Watch now:

Haven Review: Death Becomes Her

"Magic Hour (Part Two)" didn't quite have the same finesse that part one enjoyed, but we needed to find out what happened last week, didn't we?

Audrey seemed to grow up a little since her trip to Colorado and I don't think she'll be taking things for granted any more. What else went down?

Audrey Fights for Nathan

We figured out why Moira was so angry at her sister. Because at age 34, Noelle looked like a teenager and Moira looked like her mother. I was shocked to find out the reason Moira hated her sister was because the last time the Troubles came around Noelle was eight and didn't save their dad. I never would have guessed her to be 34.

Okay, I'm being silly, but Moira's attitude was so utterly annoying that I almost clapped when Audrey finally pulled her gun and threatened to kill her so her Trouble might kick in. It was absolutely brilliant! Too bad it didn't work.

Can you imagine living all those years, treating your sister with disrespect and using her Trouble for your own gain only to find out that she had saved your life? Noelle loved her sister so much she would rather have her hatred than lose her, and rather let her think she let her dad die than have Moira be in her debt for saving him. Talk about love.

It was like a kaleidoscopic of lifesaving going on in that house. Moira got her power, she saved both her sister and Nathan as Audrey made a tearful confession Nathan. As beautiful as it was to hear from her lips, it was painful to see the reactions from Duke and Jordan as they witnessed Audrey pour her heart out to the man she had always loved.

I love how well Haven remembers when Jordan needs her gloves and when she doesn't. When she touched Duke earlier in the episode, he was writhing in pain, but when she touched Audrey it was okay because of her immunity to the Troubles. Little things like that make the continuity work so well.

I was on to something last week when I said Tommy wasn't himself. He was Troubled. When he got into a fight with Duke, he got cut and his blood disappeared into Duke. I knew that whole story about staying in town was bogus. The Teagues figured out the bolt-gun killer would be going after Audrey to get more information on The Colorado Kid, but since he was killed in the end, there were few answers gained from Tommy's presence in Haven.

Tommy showed up, ruffled feathers, needlessly killed women to build a missing person from body parts and then killed Nathan, but little else. Nobody found that half built head that I recall. Someone is in for a shock when they find that.

The Teagues did finally relent and decide it was time to stop keeping secrets from Audrey, so we'll see how that plays into things going forward, as well. They have a lifetime of information share, and two incarnations of Audrey to spill in three weeks.

Oh, I forgot the all important love and devotion speech from Audrey to Nathan. If Tommy hadn't killed him, she wouldn't have been able to say those words out loud. I wonder when she'll be able to say them to Nathan when he's still breathing. Audrey's a pretty amazing woman. Giving up her time to speak with him so that he could talk with Jordan was selfless. I hope putting off that talk doesn't come back to haunt her.

Speaking of haunting, what was that house Vince saw on the hill out in the water beyond the Grey Gull? Is that where the father of The Colorado Kid lives or lived? Could it be a mere coincidence that he saw it at the same time he told Audrey that she never named the father? Or is that where Tommy ended up since they didn't find the body. Is the Frankenhead in there? So many questions!

In the comments, we've been talking about the possibility of a time warp making Nathan the father of Sarah's child. Maybe the house on the hill was bleeding through from another time. Audrey has decided to use the time before The Hunter arrives to search for her son. It will be interesting to see how many people get in on the hunt and what resources she can tap into for information as to where he might be. I'll point again at those Teagues brothers.

What did you think of the conclusion of The Magic Hour?  Haven  has been renewed for a fourth season, so we can rest easy knowing that whatever mind blowing finale they have coming, we will have more to explore next year. Will it be a new incarnation of the Sarah/Lucy/Audrey line? The possibilities are endless!

Grimm Review: Cannibals and Kisses

It only took 11 episodes, but "To Protect and Serve Man" finally began making a hand out of some of this season’s story cards.

Hank Has a Different View

But before getting to Monroe, Juliette and Renard, let’s begin with the case.

As much as I tend to complain when Grimm decides to veer back to its procedural roots, tonight’s episode didn’t bother me in the slightest. It could be due to some of the serial arcs this season because they are slow burning, but then that would take away from the genuinely compelling case.

The reason the case was so captivating was because of the ambiguity surrounding Ferren. Even with the context of the Wesen world seven years later, and Hank wanting to do his best to make sure that he leaves no stones unturned before a man is set to death, it’s still difficult to piece together if Ferren is a man who is truly haunted by these images and reacted out of fear, or if he is something more.

No matter what the end result of Ferren’s character is, it’s great to see Hank continually expand in small moments over the course of this season. The knowing glance between him and Ferren at the end when Ferren asks if he’s seen the faces is a great example of this. Hank’s initiation into Nick’s world has been violent, to the least, and he’s stood steadfast and been an exemplary partner to Nick, but, for Hank, it’s probably nice to know that there are others with similar experiences.

As for Juliette and Renard, the sooner Monroe concocts and cooks this potion, the better. While it’s nice to see that Renard’s little privacy circle could be on the verge of crashing, it’s hard to know just what Monroe’s actions are going to be. Monroe is very loyal to Nick, but he also has a fondness (not in a gross Renard way thankfully) for Juliette. I’m wondering if he will respect Juliette’s privacy for her sake, and try to help her out of this jam without Nick knowing.

On the other hand, it’s equally as likely Monroe tells Nick everything. Whatever happens Monroe is about to get a little more information than the Grimm side previously knew.

One final moment of interest is Nick’s conversation with Juliette about what she remembers before heading into her coma. A few weeks back I speculated since Juliette doesn’t remember her love of Nick she can look at things objectively, and while she doesn’t remember why she was crying in front of the trailer (and Nick doesn’t really want to tell her) there are still plenty of touches that have been hit upon over the course of this season that Juliette can’t explain: Bud telling her Nick is a Grimm, the cat scratch, Nick’s odd schedule and secrecy, and, finally, the spice shop.

Juliette isn’t an idiot. At some point she’s going to start piecing together that Nick is up to some kind of extracurricular activities, and if she regains her memories a lot more will suddenly make a lot more sense to her.

Other thoughts:

  • So happy to see Rosalee again! Hopefully she’ll be back before next week’s fall finale.
  • With Rosalee’s hopefully soon return does that mean we can finally get Monroe back in the field with Nick?
  • I’m now hoping for a Renard centric episode based on the plot of The Hangover.
  • Tonight’s honorary member of Juliette’s rotating circle of gal pals is Katie Walder who is in one of my favorite indie movies: Shelter.

Matthew Perry to Make Return to The Good Wife

With Maddie Heyward throwing her wealthy hat into The Good Wife ring last Sunday, we can now confirm another update to the Chicago race for Governor.

Matthew Perry will be reprising his role as Republican candidate Mike Kresteva on an upcoming episode of the CBS drama. Look for him to make his return in early 2013.

Matthew Perry as Mike Kresteva

Kresteva debuted toward the end of The Good Wife Season 3, making Alicia's acquaintance as part of a Blue Ribbon Panel and eventually worming his way into the face.

Despite being referenced on more than one occasion this fall, it had been unclear whether Perry would be able to stop by again, considering his starring role on NBC's Go On.

Nikita Review: Who Is Owen?

It's only been a few months since the inmates took over the asylum, but even with the good guys running Division, "Consequences" brought to light just how little they've been able to achieve, even when they're the ones with all the resources at their fingertips.

Owen laid it out perfectly to Nikita: How many agents have you brought in? Of the three you found, Nikita, how many have you brought in alive? Nikita felt very protective of Owen and did everything she could to ensure his safety as they picked him up, but nothing could prepare her for what he discovered while he was in a Russian prison. When he was in Amanda's clutches, she somehow erased his life prior to Division.

Appearance by Owen

Even knowing that Nikita, Michael, Alex and Birkhoff are now part of senior management, it doesn't change his feelings about being there. If you think about it, all he has are bad memories, and whatever good ones he managed to make with Nikita through her friendship. Being in a place of such darkness must be crushing.

But who the Hell is Owen? A broken soldier named Sam? Did Amanda Christen him Owen when she shot him full of whatever it was she did back in the day? Ari stabbed him leaving us to wonder what Amanda knows, how she knows it and why he has the headaches - and I want to punch his lights out! I'm really worried about him. He was the first agent they saved, and he doesn't even know who he is.

Please tell me Amanda hasn't planted a device in Owen's head that she can use to track him. Birkhoff figured out Amanda did some sort of lobotomy on him, but learning his name is just too juicy to pass up. There will have to be more where that came from.

There were further hints about what happened between Birkhoff and Sonya, and whatever it was, it almost appears it was too good instead of something that went wrong. The hints were that they could barely stay away from each other at work, so I'm guessing they got hot and heavy while we weren't looking and parted ways because their lust was getting in the way of their jobs. C'mon, guys! If Nikita and Michael can do it, so can you! Working together is a good start, and it looks like they'll be exposing someone in Division working for Amanda.

Ann certainly has it bad for Amanda. She's like a puppy begging to be fed, but her treat of choice is murder. She just wants to be in the field killing. I'm sure she'll come in handy, but Amanda likes to mix it up with intelligent people. How long until Ann feels the wrath of being an ignorant lapdog to the cunning Amanda?

What's up with Alex? Sean told her he loves her. Yes, he asked her to leave Division first, but when he told her he loved her it was for real. Things haven't gone great for her since childhood, and real love has been fleeting, but to ignore it, start popping painkillers and go on a mission to ignore it was just odd. At least she found the 'crypto thingy,' as she put it. Come to think of it, Amanda didn't have that for very long.

I wonder if Sean will become more involved with Division to stay close to Alex. He said he would leave but there's no way that's happening. With as much as they've been through together already, I expect they'll only grow closer and he'll figure out her fears and try to maintain proximity.

The hour went so fast, and we have a wait until Nikita returns in its new time slot at the end of November to see what happens next.

Fringe Review: Haven’t We Been Here Before?

"Through the Looking Glass and What Walter Found There" brought us so close to the alterverse, but all Walter did was wander into a pocket universe. Whatever that is.

No doubt it's something that allows for as little extra makeup, characters and excitement as possible. The poor guy he found roaming the halls there thought he was in purgatory. I'm beginning to think I'm inHhell.

Walter on a Search

To say I was disappointed we weren't immediately hit with consequences to Peter's self-implantation of the Observer tech is putting it mildly. At the very least, a damned infection seemed to be in order. Who else could have pulled a dirty, bloody unknown gizmo out of a living neck and them jammed it into their own without one, tiny bit of misfortune because of it?

I think of the number of things Olivia went through and how every time she was faced with consequences. Every tank dump to try to enter the mind of her first partner, John. The last time she was dosed with cortexiphan her two worlds split in two and she lost the life she knew in the new timeline, thinking she was going crazy in the process. And that was from a drug that was already present in her system.

What Peter introduced to his was foreign, unclean, unsafe and unproven.

We still have the new, improved Olivia Dunham. She no longer runs from her feelings, but faces them head on, almost revels in them and is willing to help Peter confront whatever he is feeling as well. She spent years trying to pretend nothing could hurt her, and now she's somehow the pinnacle of mental health.

Where is Anna Torv's material? As the many facets of Olivia, Olive, and Liv in this universe and the alternate, as herself and Liv playing her and so on and so forth, she's made Fringe sing. Her reward in the final episodes is to become a supporting character. I don't understand.

I was worried early on about the Myst-like premise of searching for video tapes and putting them together like a puzzle. Puzzles take time. Time is something we really don't have. We're still finding the corner pieces and are halfway through the board. That's a lot to build upon for the middle of the puzzle, and it will still take a long time to get a clear picture of the full plan.

To top it off, we've been here before. Last year, in "Brave New World, Part 1," Olivia exhibited some of the same superpowers from her cortexiphan trials that Peter got via the implant. Remember, she was stopping nanites and controlling Peter like a Wii. Does that mean there is some connection between the two? Maybe. But when the Observer finally started punching Peter around it apparently knocked the last pin into place because that was what he needed to notice any change whatsoever from the implant.

We wondered in the latest Fringe Round Table what or who the Observers are now that we know there is some tech involved. Do they all have it? Are they born and then enhanced? Are only those in the Army enhanced? So many questions, but none of them are even close to being answered. Seeing Peter doing things Olivia did when she was at the height of her powers does make me wonder if the tech doesn't also infuse some cortexiphan or equivalent into the host's system.

I'm losing my faith that we will have answers as the show comes to an end. Perhaps they're playing their cards close to the vest in the hopes of getting a movie deal instead of finishing things off on television. There's no doubt I'm going to watch until the conclusion of the series. I won't miss an episode. But the faith I had at the beginning of the season is gone.

Could they throw a Hail Mary pass? Sure. Let's start with utilizing Olivia. Oh, wait. They're filming the last episode. Any input is too late. I hope Walter's talk about hubris and becoming the man he didn't want to be again after his brain was put back together wasn't some sort of secret message about the series. Help me keep the faith with some dazzling comments!

Anatomic Fashion Friday: Human Hair Handbags

Taeseok Kang Hairbag

Taeseok Kang Hairbag

Taeseok Kang Hairbag

If I were known to carry a handbag, I can be almost certain that it wouldn’t be one from this collection. I can barely manage to touch a wig, let alone comb through a stranger’s split ends to get to my house keys.

That being said, these are certainly a unique design. Taeseok Kang, a graduate from the London College of Fashion, created these human hair handbags with an intent to explore “narratives of sexual human body and address the question of palpable sensations that manifest from the sexual instinct of a human being and the range of sexiness from subtle to extreme.”

I don’t think I’d stretch to claim these are sexy… but there are certainly some more subtle than others. I’m looking at you circa 1960′s bob.

Check out the rest of the collection at Kang’s website.

Morbidity Vindicated: A Review of ‘Seize the Day’ Event at the Wellcome Collection

Much of what Ebenstein shows us seems bursting at the seams with meaning, as if the objects have travelled through history like a ball of snow gathering mass as it rolls down a hill. Tableaux of foetal skeletons engaging in miniature funeral ceremonies take on very different meanings in modernity as opposed to when they were constructed...

... I agree with Ebenstein when she criticises those who would define her as unhealthily morbid. I think it's far more interesting to try and understand what our irresistible compulsion to explore this subject says about the psychology of humanity, and how we bear the burden of being the only animal with the foresight to see the Grim Reaper  somewhere up the road ahead of us, tapping his scythe impatiently.

--'Seize the Day' at the Wellcome Collection, 2nd November 2012, London City Nights

The above is drawn from a lovely and insightful review of last Friday night's amazing "Seize the Day" event at The Wellcome Collection from the "London City Nights" website; it includes a detailed and sensitive response to my own contribution to the night's festivities: A lecture entitled "Art and Death." Images drawn from the post, and were all discussed at length in the lecture. Top to bottom:
