Live Case at TCT Mirrors Simbionix PRS Patient Specific Simulation Rehearsal
The Simbionix PROcedure trade; Rehearsal Studio (PRS) was put to the test when Barry T. Katzen, MD, FACR, FACC, FSIR, Founder/ Medical Director of Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute utilized the technology to pre-operatively plan and rehearse for a Live Case he performed at the 2012 TCT Conference. Following the rehearsal done in advance of the surgery, Dr. Katzen performed the EVAR endovascular intervention live at the TCT. This "Future Techniques for Endovascular Therapy" session demonstrated new techniques for possible improvements on a variety of procedures in the endovascular space. The practice session involved the pre-operative review of the patient #39;s anatomy, selection of tools dedicated for EVAR procedure, including deploying a Gore C3 Excluder endoprosthesis .The patient had challenging anatomy with a lot of iliactortuosity and a fairly big flow lumen which posed technical challenges for the group of physicians doing this procedure. The patient #39;s CT scan was downloaded into the PRS which allowed Dr. Katzen to create a patient-specific 3D virtual anatomical model. Dr. Katzen used it to plan and practice the endovascular intervention which included the identification of the appropriate access strategy, selection of tools, guide wires, catheters, endoprosthesis as well as choosing the effective fluoroscopic views. At TCT, Dr. Katzen showed the practice video and then performed the actual surgery on the patient they had rehearsed earlier. The live case replicated the ...From:SimbionixUSAViews:46 0ratingsTime:02:07More inScience Technology

Fringe Review: Come Home, Walter

There are times when watching Fringe that I think, geez, I should drop some acid!

"Black Blotter" featured a few of those moments as Walter witnessed fairies dancing and remembered secret, long lost important code words - but in the end reality was still there, and it somehow seemed stronger than ever. I think Walter can keep his acid trips, as living in the present comes with a strong enough undercurrent for me, thank you very much.

Following the Signal

We were back to normal this week, as normal as things get on Fringe; the radio they picked up in the pocket universe in "Through the Looking Glass and What Walter Found There" suddenly started giving off a signal. Instead of searching for betamax tapes, they were off on a hunt of a different nature, and it was good to change up the pace a bit.

Olivia and Peter had a chance to talk and Peter apologized for what a colossal ass he had been for plunging forward with the Observer tech and leaving Olivia again, the one thing he promised he'd never do again. It felt like they were finally a couple, certainly stressed and not set free of their past, but moving forward and working together again. It was something we needed in Fringe Season 5, and was done in such a way that didn't put too much emphasis on it, but enough to show how much they cared for one another.

While they didn't immediately find the signal, they did find a signal reflector, which at one time was being protected by Sam Weiss, who was very dead when they came across him. I so enjoyed him in his standout episode, "The Last Sam Weiss" in Fringe Season 3 and while I knew he wouldn't make another appearance, knowing he went down fighting was a bittersweet ending for such a mythical character.

The whole time Peter and Olivia were out in search of the signal, Walter was tripping on acid. Astrid had her hands full as he struggled to forget the horrible man he believed was taking over his more lovable side. Doing battle in his mind were Dr. Carla Warren, his old lab assistant who died in the fire and the reason he ended up in the mental institution and a young Nina Sharpe. Carla was the naysayer, reminding him he had been the bad man far longer than he had the good and to give up any hope he had to keep hold of the man he had become in the years since her death.

Nina represented the man he was after his brain pieces had been removed, but also who he was with them back in, as she believed he could work beyond the brain and continue fighting for good. Her character had a much smaller role in his trip than Carla, if you were wondering which side was winning out. I really thought he had found the book Carla had set the fire to burn, containing Walter's life's work; the work that enabled him to consider himself a god. But finding the book was all a part of the trip.

By taking the acid, Walter was hoping to lose more of the man he thought was becoming again, but instead he remembered more of the man he once was, reliving formulas and equations once long forgotten. He looked at the book as he burned it only to find an empty bowl. Burning it would do no good, as what he activated with the trip was alive once more.

We never did find out for sure if Nina promised to help him remove his brain chunks again, but we had confirmation from Walter that she had - unless that was another part of his trip. That's the weird thing about acid. As viewers, we have no idea now what was true and what wasn't. Generally, I'd say the bad parts were dominating, completely nullifying my "geez, I should try acid" thought in the opening paragraph. It would appear nothing good can come of it.

Olivia, Peter, Walter and Astrid all descended upon the island where the signal was coming from and that's where they discovered the Observer child, Michael. The one that was left, we thought, in the pocket universe. Donald had left him with a nice couple who cared for him for 20 years, a child who never grew. Perhaps never spoke? We've pondered in the comments and Fringe Round Table discussions a fitting end for the Observers and emotion plays a large part of that chatter. Michael wiped the tears from his "mother's" cheek. He seems devoid of emotion, but clearly he is not.

It was also incredibly cool that he and Olivia and Peter could all remember each other from a time frame that nobody else can remember. That had to make it easier for him to leave all he has known for the past two decades and leave with what would otherwise have been total strangers. It's like they share their own secret bond that nobody else will ever understand.

Michael seems more like September in his actions and reactions to those around him. When Olivia gave him hot cocoa and he took a sip, an expression overtook his face. Just a hint, but enough to know there was more to him than a blank canvas of logical thought. Perhaps that is why he is such an integral part of Walter's plan to put an end to the Observers occupation. Whatever it is that makes Michael special will be the key to their downfall. I'm also incredibly curious why he never aged in 20 years. There is still so much we don't know about the Observers and life in 2036 and we have four hours of Fringe left.

Four hours. Can you believe it? I can't. I'm worried for Walter. With his support system back in place, if they can keep his hands out of the acid jar, perhaps they can protect him from himself. He is so frightened of who he might become again that he's forgetting the person he already is, and is allowing his malevolent nature to creep in. As long as he is aware that it's there, he can keep it at bay. With the love of his family, the odds only go up.

What did you think of this week's episode? How will Michael fit into the plan to arrest the Observers and stop them from further damaging the world? Is Fringe on the right track for a spectacular series finale?

Georgia’s most important players of 2017: Anatomy of the star – DawgNation

ATHENS, Ga. Aaron Davis, Tyrique McGhee and DeAngelo Gibbs are competing this year to man the position that got its name because ofBill Belichick.

At least thats how the story goes, as told a few years ago by Nick Saban, who in the 1990s was an up-and-coming assistant on Belichicksstaff with the Cleveland Browns. Back then, and for many to this day, the third cornerback spot is called the nickelback. But Belichick, the defensive genius, wanted to use it in a bit of a different way.

The nickelback would also have some linebacker duties. It would be a hybrid. So Belichick wanted to call it something else, and wanted a term that started with an S, because it was basically the Sam linebacker. (For the same reason, the Money position the cornerback in a dime started with an M, because it was akin to the Mike linebacker.)

Everything that Bill Belichick does has some purpose, Saban said during a press conference in 2012.

So at some point somebody came up with star, and through the years that hybrid spot gained that moniker, and was used earlier this decade at Georgia with Leonard Floyd and Josh Harvey-Clemons.

But the proliferation of up-tempo, spread-out offenses has gradually led to teams simply using it as a third cornerback, the original use of the position, just a better tackler, blitzer and cover guy in the middle of the field. The nickel defense is basically the base defense. But the use of the term star remains.

In his first year as Georgias coach, Kirby Smart imported Alabamas Maurice Smith to be the star, and he excelled. He also had one year of eligibility, and his backup Rico McGraw transferred. That left a gaping hole the only open starting position on Georgias defense.

In the old days of football, this one open spot wouldnt be that big a deal. In these days, it is.

New starting center Lamont Gaillard was No. 12.

Wide receiver (it appears) Mecole Hardman came in at No. 11.

No. 10 was defensive lineman Trent Thompson.

No. 9 was underappreciated safety Dominick Sanders.

No. 8 was the kicker, whoever it ends up being.

And now

Sophomore/Senior/Freshman

Star (nickelback)

WHY HES IMPORTANT: Georgia has everything else set on defense. It has a deep and talented defensive line. It has four established linebackers who are so good their backups could start on many SEC teams. Most of the secondary is set as well, from Dominick Sanders at free safety to cornerbacks Malkom Parrish and Deandre Baker. The only remaining questions are whether Davis will again start at safety or move down to the star. Davis, a fifth-year senior who has been a starter the past three years, brings experience wherever he goes. But if hes the star, will he be as consistent and effective as hes been at cornerback and safety? What if the coaches go with McGhee or Gibbs, either of whom would be a first-time starter?

FACTOID: McGhee was given the defensive Hugh Hendrix Award, of the player who most strains his potential. The winners on offense were receiver Terry Godwin and offensive lineman Pat Allen.

BEST CASE: Whoever gets the job keeps it the entire season, as Smith did, bringing stability to this lone open spot on defense. As for who wins it, Davis staying at safety would bring the most stability, because if he moves to star that essentially means two new starters.

WORST CASE: No one grabs the job during the preseason, the star becomes a revolving door, it has a domino effect on the rest of the secondary and the defense, and costs the Bulldogs big plays and big games.

FINAL WORD: Davis is the savvy veteran, McGhee is the young kid whos gotten his feet wet, and Gibbs is the high-upside rookie. It presents an interesting choice for Mel Tucker and Smart to make.

Grey’s Anatomy Return Promo: Bigger. Better. Bolder.

Now on hiatus for the holidays, Grey's Anatomy returns January 10 with "Things We Said Today."

It will be bigger, better, and bolder than ever then, according to ABC's first official promo.

Last night's episode (see TV Fanatic's Grey's Anatomy review) certainly closed out 2012 by giving us a lot to talk about. The winter finale felt like a season finale with some of its pivotal, dramatic turns at the end.

Fortunately, we only have to wait four weeks for the action to resume in Seattle. Will Cristina and Owen make it after all? What will become of Adele's emergency - and Miranda skipping out to help her friend?

Check out the teaser for the show's 2013 return and share your comments with us below:

Year in Review: Best Couple of 2012

The TV Fanatic staff is back with another year-end Round Table.

Following our selections of the Best Villains and Best Feuds from the past 12 months, we now turn our attention to the in-love tandems we love to love, asking each other and then readers:

What was the Best Couple of 2012?

Best of 2012 Logo

Kate Brooks: Aiden and Emily!!! Even if they pushed Nolan and Emily to the side to keep these two together on Revenge, I love it and I love them.

Miranda Wicker: Damon and Elena!! Even if I have to endure this stupid sire bond nonsense

Leigh Raines: Olivia and Fitz from Scandal. Even though they technically aren't together and it's cheating, you can't help but love them together. Especially after that gut wrenching scene in the rose garden from "Happy Birthday Mr. President."

Dan Forcella: I typically don't like to repeat someone's answer, but there is no better response to this than Damon and Elena. Is there better chemistry on television? Or anywhere?!?!

Carla Day: Zoe and Wade on Hart of Dixie are steamy hot down there in Alabama. Despite a small detour, they are on track to be a the power couple of Bluebell.

Steve Marsi: Booth. Brennan. Emily Deschanel's deadpan quirkiness and David Boreanaz's panache make these two a perennial treat to watch, no matter how determined Fox is to ruin Bones' scheduling.

Matt Richenthal: How has no one mentioned Charming and Snow on Once Upon a Time yet?!? Their romance has driven a season-plus of one of 2012's most popular shows.

When Charming Met Snow...Beckett's Being FilmedBen & Leslie On The Bus Tour

Gabrielle Moss: Ben and Leslie on Parks and Recreation! Though the show has been wildly uneven this season, watching their romance finally work out has been one of 2012's greatest televisual pleasures for me.

Christine Orlando: Rick Castle and Kate Beckett on Castle. FINALLY, fans get all of the sweet, fun, sexy, romantic moments we've longed to see for over four seasons. It was definitely worth the wait.

Christina Tran: Jake and Addison from Private Practice! Addie finally gets her happily ever after. They're just so right for each other.

Jim Garner: Amy and Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. Look no further than last week's episode where Amy got "disciplined" for proof.

Carissa Pavlica: Cat and Vincent on Beauty and the Beast. I know, I wouldn't have believed it either, but their chemistry is fantastic. Being forced apart by circumstance makes their moments together even more bittersweet and beautiful. They could be perfect, if only...

Nick McHatton: The Bromance of Arrow's Colin Donnell and Stephen Amell on Twitter is rather adorable, but best couple of 2012 goes to Parenthood's Adam and Kristina. They have been absolutely amazing this season, as the two people who provide the most support and stability to the family are rocked with the emotional hurricane of cancer. This could be the year of the Emmy for Parenthood thanks to their amazing performances.

YOUR turn, TV Fanatics: Who do you think was the best on-screen couple of 2012?

The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "O Come, All Ye Faithful"

A Winter Wonderland turned into a Christmas catastrophe on The Vampire Diaries last night, as least for the Lockwood family.

What did you think of "O Come, All Ye Faithful?" In this edition of the TV Fanatic Round Table, staff members Matt Richenthal, Miranda Wicker, Steve Marsi and Leigh Raines weigh in on the best scenes, an especially evil Klaus and Jeremy's ridiculous biceps. Won't you join them?

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: One character, one word, oodles of chills down my spin: Klaus' reminding Stefan of the days when he was the Rippppah.

Miranda: I don't know that any one scene stands out to me above any other, but there are a couple of moments that were great. The first is when Jeremy tries to sneak-kill Elena and she, in all her newfound vampire glory, put him in a choke hold. The second was when Jeremy was advancing toward Elena to test the detour and Damon stepped in his path as if to say "over my dead, sexy body."

Steve: Klaus drowning Tyler's mom. Slaying the hybrids who plotted his demise was one thing, but Mayor Lockwood? What a horrific finishing touch to his massacre. BURNING QUESTION, though: Who is Deputy Mayor of Mystic Falls!?

Leigh: Honestly, it was Klaus finally killing that pain in the ass hybrid girl, I wanna say her name was Adrian or something. But a less morbid answer would be Tyler and his mother's brief bonding scene.

Did Damon make the right decision in letting Elena go?
Matt: Let's see... he can be with the woman he loves and force her to do his bidding?!? I'm gonna go with a big fat NO on this one. Damon's decision was almost as dumb as Julie Plec's to include this contrived storyline in the first place.

Miranda: No. Not at all. For starters, it's complete garbage to drag this triangle out more, if that's what they're even doing. Second, she's still sired. She's just been sired to stay away. The whole "every part of my body is telling me to get in that car" bit? Hello!! Still sired. No free will. So use that sire bond to get back between Damon's sheets, please.

Steve: Hard to call that a decision at all, as the writers basically invented a new way to ramp up the Damon and Elena tension that makes absolutely no sense.

Leigh: Damon shouldn't of sired her to stay away. He should have sired her to have free will. This bond is so stupid, not digging it.

Caroline ratting out the red hot Delena sex to Stefan: The right move or none of her beeswax?
Matt: I'll forgive my dream gal because she only has the best of intentions. It's easy to forget how abusive Damon was to Caroline on The Vampire Diaries Season 1. All the snark in the world and even that smile can't make up for how she was treated by the man now going to bed with her BFF. I can't hold Caroline's reaction against her.

Miranda: I generally love Caroline and find the Caroline/Stefan friendship great. I mean, he needs a friend. But she needs to back out of this. She crossed a line last night, twice. She betrayed Tyler's plan to Stefan, too. I'm not so much loving what Caroline's doing this season.

Steve: Honestly, I have no idea what Caroline's deal is with Damon. Sure, she's entitled to her opinion, but her words and actions over the past few weeks have felt a little forced and out of character.

Leigh: This is a hard one. They are both Caroline's very close friends. She should've told Elena either you tell him or I will, but he has to know. I don't know that Caroline should've just blurted it. She does have the tendency to have loose lips, we all know that. Elena will be pissed but Stefan deserved to know, so it's a wash.

Pen a eulogy for Mayor Lockwood.
Matt: You birthed a hybrid and you led a town. Your death will leave Tyler's world upside down. Klaus will get his someday, and now you're free. To chill in heaven with Anna, Alaric and, of course, Vicki. God bless.

Miranda: Carol Lockwood, Boozy mayor of Mystic Falls. We knew you...not very well at all. May the afterlife hold all the martinis, bourbon and champagne you can drink. Give our love to Alaric.

Steve: Be sure to give the Council a full report.

Leigh: Mayor Lockwood... ummm... Rest in Peace. You birthed a hot son and held down the fort in Mystic Falls for as long as you could. May you pop up on another CW show.

More surprising: April freeing Rebekah, Klaus ripping out the hearts of every hybrid of Jeremy's physique?
Matt: I continue to be surprised by my continual interest in Jeremy, so I'll go with him again here. The only thing stronger than his body was the drink in my hand immediately after this episode last night, in an attempt to forget it ever existed.

Miranda: Klaus was finally, legitimately terrifying last night, so I'm definitely going with that. Seriously. And he liked Stefan's style? His was so...orchestral? Brutal? Bad ass? I didn't at all see it coming that he was working with Hayley and Professor Shady Pants, so this definitely has my curiosity piqued for the return.

Steve: Klaus' return to murderous glory didn't shock me too much, given what Joseph Morgan told TV Fanatic this week. Not to mention the fact that Hayley had been playing Tyler for so long and his plan was bound to unravel in spectacular fashion. April waking up Beks? How did she know where to go or how to process any of what just happened? Total (random) surprise!

Leigh: Gonna go with April on this. If you found a statue-esque dead body with a dagger in the heart sitting in a tomb, wouldn't you run screaming for your life? She's in for a rude awakening. That was definitely not something I expected.

Give the first half of The Vampire Diaries Season 4 a grade.
Matt: The last three episodes have been brutal enough to knock this all the way down to a C. It started out with Best Season Ever potential - the Elena storyline was playing out perfectly - but this sire bond angle simply doesn't make any sense. It's destroyed the show's momentum, it's brought unwanted focus back on to the love triangle and I don't see any way it contributes to Rebekah getting topless any time soon.

Miranda: A-/B+. The scales are tipped toward the A- because of the hot sex between Damon and Elena. Toward the B+ because of all the whiny Caroline and sire bond nonsense. So far season 4 is miles ahead of season 3. Miles and miles.

Steve: B-minus. The last three weeks have felt uneven, rushed and confounding at times, stalling the strong momentum Season 4 started out with.

Leigh: B. I'm still semi confused about this whole sacrifice situation and the whole sire bond is total BS. April hasn't been an enthralling addition but I'm loving Phoebe Tonkin. All in all I'm still excited to tune in every week and that's what really matters.
