Hot Pic

Indeed, The CW has released the official episode synopsis for the first Vampire Diaries Season 4 installment of the new year and you can start getting excited over it now:

Appearing unexpectedly at Mystic Falls High, Rebekah wastes no time trying to force Stefan, Elena and Caroline to answer her questions about the search for a cure, leading to a bombshell piece of information from Elena.

When Bonnie’s father, Rudy Owens, accepts the role of Interim Mayor, he makes it a priority to protect his daughter, who isn’t at all comfortable with the role he suddenly wants to play in her life.  Professor Shane continues to encourage Bonnie to believe in her powers, but he soon finds himself in danger when he reveals too much to the wrong person.

Later, Caroline does her best to comfort Tyler after a violent confrontation.  Meanwhile, at the lake house, Damon and Matt train Jeremy, trying to raise his game as a hunter, but Klaus is impatient with their progress and intervenes to speed up the process.

Fringe Review: About a Boy

The world may not be coming to an end, but the final season of Fringe draws closer to its own dramatic conclusion.

"Anomaly XB-6783746" was another chapter in the search for answers and hunt for clues, as Olivia, Peter and Walter sought out Nina Sharp in an effort to figure out why Michael was integral to the big plan of saving the world.

Help from Nina

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see how it all finishes it out, whether it be a mind-bending reveal, explosive showdown, or a quiet human moment. The possibilities still feel endless, and I have high hopes.

Yet, I can't help but feel that for the most part, Fringe Season 5 has been more focused on closing the chapter to its super saga with a bang and less about the journey to get there.

Sure, we've had good scenes that have touched on Walter's moral dilemmas and identity, Peter's grief, and even Olivia's ability to be the stable and supporting member to her love, to her daughter, to her team.

Except, even amongst the character moments, it all feels secondary to the connecting of the puzzle pieces. The Fringe team seems to be along for the ride.

This time around, it was everyone trying to communicate with the child Observer, meaning a good portion of the episode was postulating theories on how to do so and trying to get the tech that could even attempt to do so.

Of course, Captain Windmark was on the trail, sniffing out his enemies like a determined bloodhound.

I do find Windmark to be a fantastic bad guy. The Observers have a way of making their emotionless and cold demeanor to be utterly creepy, but Windmark tops the others. There's a ruthless and scary villain behind that bald head, and his stares are so piercing that I believe he's mind interrogating the people across from him.

His confrontation with Nina seemed inevitable. It was her remarks about the Observers being animals that was the perfect slap in the face though. The words clearly cut deep and if anything, it was a great last remark for her.

Although, when it came down to it, I wasn't shocked that Nina made a sacrifice by killing herself. It was an unfortunate turn of events, but to her it was necessary to save Michael.

In reality, a lot of the hour felt predictable. I wasn't surprised that it wouldn't be until the final minutes of the episode that something significant would happen.

And that's not to say that there weren't significant moments like Olivia connecting with Michael, or Olivia and Peter working together as a solid team, or Nina helping the Fringe team get to the next step. It's just that to me it felt as if most of the time was all about leading up to the shocking final moment.

But it was a surprising and wonderful finish for the simply okay episode.

Firstly, Michael was able to communicate with Walter, but it was the glorious dose of fast cut flashbacks of Fringe Season 1 up until now that was the perfect nostalgia bomb. It was nice to see that the show hasn't forget about its early years while implying that every single moment has been important.

On top of that, was the discovery that the mysterious Donald was none other than September.

That's right Donald is September, but with far more follicles on his head. And he smiles!

It really has me wondering about his connection to Michael and what Observers feeling emotion means? I've always been under the impression that Walter's plan has been about defeating the Observers, but perhaps, it is about "fixing" them and helping them become human, or something along those lines?

The whole concept really does make me think back to Nina's notion of love. It is something the Observers don't have, yet we've seen boatloads of it from Walter, Peter, and Olivia. Can love truly conquer all?

There's still plenty of questions to think about, which in terms of Fringe, has always been a positive. I just hope that the final batch of episodes delivers both a satisfying end to the story, as well as its characters. I'd love to see Peter, Olivia, Walter and even Astrid, get a chance to shine with equally meaningful contributions and kick-ass moves, while receiving the fulfilling closure that they all deserve.

The Mentalist Midseason Report Card: B+

As we wait for The Mentalist to return on January 6 with "Days of Wine and Roses," we're using our down time to relive some of our favorite - and not so favorite - moments of the season so far.

We've already set fingers to keyboard for our Once Upon a Time midseason report and Sons of Anarchy Season 5 report card. Now take a look as we take a look at what Patrick Jane and company have been up to...

Back to His Old Life

Best Episode: I'm so very torn over this one. In the end it's a tie between "Devil's Cherry" and "Red Sails in Sunset." The first dove right into Jane's tortured psyche as he spoke with his deceased daughter while in a drug induced haze.  It was poignant, funny, sad, and hopeful all at once.

But "Red Sails in Sunset" brought Jane's obsession with Lorelei to a head as we learned why this intriguing character became the psychopath's mistress. The best twist was finding out how much Red John had taken away from Lorelei, and whether or not she'd ever believe Jane's theory as he let her go off to find her own truth.

Then there was that whole issue about a handshake as Lorelei told Jane: I only wonder why the two of you didn't become life long friends the moment you shook hands. | permalink

Now that will surely have repercussions throughout 2013.

Worst Episode:  Perhaps it's simply because Wayne Rigsby has never been one of my favorite characters but I didn't find much to love in "Blood Feud." Rigsby's father was a despicable man and Wayne has never really known when to walk away.  Heck, in the past he'd even dragged Cho down into his mess.  So the only upside I saw in this episode was that dear old Dad won't be returning.

Most Improved Character: I'm not sure you can call Patrick Jane improved as he continues to carry this show but my love for the tortured ex-psychic continues to grow.

From the intimate look into his tortured heart that we glimpsed as he spoke with his deceased daughter to his obsession with the serial killer that took her and his wife away, somehow Patrick Jane just gets better with age.

Most Disappointing Character: Almost all of the secondary characters have been disappointing this season for one reason or another but I've really missed these two...

Kimball Cho because we really haven't seen enough of him. I've been craving more of Cho's deadpan one liners and observations all season but they've been few and far between.

Grace Van Pelt has been stuck behind a desk most of the season, not that it's her fault.  Amanda Righetti is very pregnant which explains the large purses, plants and boxes that continue to jump in her path but I've missed the bad ass Grace we got glimpses of in The Mentalist season 4. Hopefully once the actress' beautiful bundle of joy is born we can get back to the sweet but snarky Van Pelt I've grown to love.

Most Intriguing Character Return:  Lorelei Martins. When we first met Red John's newest minion in The Mentalist season 4 finale she was certainly sexy and alluring but this season gave her a new twist.  Whether she realizes it or not, Lorelei is a victim of Red John. Will she survive the tug of war between Patrick Jane and the infamous serial killer?  I hope so. Watching this intriguing beauty's blood spill would be tragedy.

Most Disappointing Character Return:  Summer Edgecombe. I never thought she was a good match for Cho but Summer was smart and fun and funny. Upon Summer's return this season she was dumbed down and boring. Apparently they brought the former hooker / criminal informant back just to knock her up, marry her off to some dim witted guy and send her on her way. What a lousy way to close out a once interesting character.

Hopes for 2013:

  • More character development for Teresa Lisbon. I feel as though we only get glimpses into Lisbon and after five season's we should know her better.
  • I know this will probably never happen but I'd like to see the show decide whether Jane and Lisbon are headed towards a possible romantic future or if this is more of a brother / sister partnership. Surprisingly, I'm good with either scenario but wondering which way this duo is leaning can get confusing.
  • As much as I'm loving the slow build of tracking Red John, I hope the appearance of increased momentum isn't a fluke.  Perhaps we can have the answer to Red John's identity at the end of this season without having Jane and company catch him just yet.

Overall Grade: B+

Okay, fans. What grade would you give The Mentalist season 5 so far.

Year in Review: Best Character of 2012

From the Best Episode of 2012 to Best Male Performance, Best Female PerformanceBest Couple, Best Villain, Best Feud and Best New Show, the TV Fanatic staff has spent the week running down the past 12 months on the small screen.

Now, we turn our attention to the fictional personas that make various shows what they are and we ask:

Who was the Best Character of 2012?

Best of 2012 Logo

Kate Brooks: THIS QUESTION IS SO HARD!! I'm going to say Donna Paulson. Her increased presence in Suits Season 2 was the best thing that show ever did. I want her to be my best friend.

Neal Lynch: I love all the characters on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Dennis Reynolds is a self-destructive sociopath whose life is one big scheme. I look forward to seeing how his character arc concludes.

Matt Richenthal: For being one of the best shows on television, Justified has gone overlooked on this overall countdown. So let's give it up for Raylan Givens, the man who combines intensity and humor (and, okay, sex appeal) better than anyone else out there.

Gabrielle Moss: Rafi from The League. Simultaneously the most hilarious and most transgressive comic character on TV over the last season or two, he's made the Sunny gang's limit-pushing look like kid stuff.

Tom Pitches RonNero with JaxCyrus on the Case

Steve Marsi: Ron F-cking Swanson.

Dan Forcella: Klaus on The Vampire Diaries was the best character on television this year. Joseph Morgan's ability to portray charm while acting as the most ruthless hybrid ever is nothing short of excellence. He is an extremely well written and perfectly acted villain.

Leigh Raines: Schmidt! Cracks me up every week without fail.

Christine Orlando: Nero Padilla of Sons of Anarchy Season 5. I've been a fan of Jimmy Smits since his NYPD Blue days, but I was still shocked how much I enjoyed his turn as the tatted up ex (sort of) gang leader. He oozes charm when saying he's "a companionator" who "brings folks together." How can you not love him?

Lisa Palmer: I think Adam from Girls qualifies as one of the best. If nothing else, because he's simply the most divisive character on any comedy I've ever seen. And I love him.

Miranda Wicker: Cyrus Beene on Scandal. He goes from nice to monster in the blink of an eye and no one spits out a monologue quite like he does.

Nick McHatton: Fiona on Shameless. She juggles so many different roles for her family, and she does it all while trying to be her own person.

YOUR turn, TV Fanatics: Who was the Best Character on TV in 2012?

I’d be hard pressed to find another individual who lives and breathes anatomy as much as Danny Quirk. Danny is a young genuine individual who oozes passion for his art—going so far as to create an anatomy-based resumé which he calls his Resumolio. I would hire him in an anatomical heartbeat if I could!

Danny explains the idea for the Resumolio,

Being a witty individual, knowledgeable in the sciences and a talented artist, I wanted to make something that showed the level of work I was capable of with a conceptual twist. I wanted to make something that would catch the eye, and leave the viewer impressed. In the past, it seems that resumes put an artist at a disadvantage. All their color was to be deduced to black and white, 12 point font, lacking the one thing that they were trying to show—their artwork. SO, having made a bunch of pieces for Dr. Frank Scali’s manuscripts, thought it could be kind of cool to make a resume based off a medical textbook, that would also show off the portfolio, thus giving rise to the ‘Resumolio’ . All the images used in this are hand made, and done in watercolor. The type was laid on in Photoshop.

The Walking Dead Renewed for Season 4; Glen Mazzara Steps Down as Showrunner

Expected and shocking news today out of AMC:

The network has renewed cable's biggest hit, The Walking Dead, for a fourth season, but there's a surprising catch: showrunner Glen Mazzara will not be around to oversee it.

“Glen guided the series creatively for Seasons 2 and 3,” AMC said in a statement. “[We're] grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success. Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on Season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.”

The Walking Dead Cast Picture

After The Walking Dead Season 3 is over, Mazzara says it will be "time to move on," adding:

"I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined. It doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey.”

This, of course, marks the second creative shake-up on a series that blows away ratings records with each outing. Frank Darabont left after The Walking Dead Season 1 and was replace by Mazzara.

Says creator Robert Kirkman in his own statement:

“I am in full support of both AMC and Glen Mazzara in the decision they have come to and believe the parties came to this decision in the best interest of the future of the show. I thank Glen for his hard work and appreciate his many contributions to The Walking Dead and look forward to working with him as we complete post production on Season 3. I am also excited to begin work on another spectacular season of this show that I know means so much to so many people. This show has always been the result of a wide range of extremely talented men and women working tirelessly to produce their best work collectively. I believe the future is bright for The Walking Dead. Thank you to the fans for your continued support.”

Trent Norman

Trent Norman Human Organs oil painting

Oil painter, sculptor, and first year medical student Trent Norman has a passion for oils and anatomical art.  Like many of us anatomical artists, Trent started at the University of Texas at Austin as a pre-Med and then added a studio art degree as he couldn’t leave his passion for art behind.

The goal with many of his anatomical paintings,

“is to portray what many consider to be disgusting or ugly in a manner that makes them beautiful and intriguing. The internal human anatomy particularly strikes his interest, because it represents the most complex machinery ever created.”

"The Macabre and Little Known Sight of Saint Victoria of Rome" : A Mystery Revealed, Thanks to the BBC

Regular readers might remember the enigmatic and gorgeous Saint Victoria (or Saint Vittoria; seen above), a life-sized saint I stumbled upon in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria directly across from Bernini's tourist-drawing Ecstasy of Saint Theresa on a recent trip to Rome. This rose-crowned and slashed-neck lady had caused me no little consternation; Was she waxwork? Effigy? Reliquary? Or some combination of the above? Sadly, churches do not have informational panels explaining such things, and I was left only to wonder as to her history and makeup.

Then, very recently, a few comments popped up on my blog from folks who had seen this mysterious figure discussed at length on the "Divine Gamble" episode of the new BBC TV series "Rome--A History of the Eternal City." I finally was able to locate a copy on You Tube and at about 12:47 minutes in, here is what I learned:

This figure, one of the cities least known but most macabre sights, appears to be a statue. But closer inspection reveals something far more spine chilling. When first you look at this, you think it must be a waxwork. But when you look a little closer, into the slightly open mouth you see, through the open lips of a skeleton. And if you look at the hands on the outside, they appear to be wax. But look inside. You can see not just the skeletal bones of the real hand of the human body but actually the dry skin there too. This is the body of Saint Victoria.

What the host does not mention explicitly is that it is, indeed, the body of the saint herself, but very much "touched up" with wax, human hair, and clothing. You can watch this segment--or the entire episode--by clicking here. You can read the former blog post by clicking here. Thanks so much to posters Cheryl, Josh and Allan for alerting me to this!

"Viva la Muerte: The Mushrooming Cult of Saint Death"–A New Event Just in Time for The End of the World

It seems only appropriate to announce Morbid Anatomy's newest event "Viva la Muerte: The Mushrooming Cult of Saint Death" on this day, December 21, 2012, which many believe to be the end of the world as predicted by the long-cycle Mayan calendar.

This epic event--which will take place on Sunday February 3rd--will investigate via lecture, moderated Q and A, mini exhibit of newly acquired Santa Muerte materials and general merrymaking the fascinating and growing phenomenon of "Santa Muerte," a new Mexican-based religion born of the fertile mix of indigenous Mayan and Aztec beliefs with that of Spanish Catholicism.

Full information follows; very much hope to see you there!

Oh, and happy end of the world, everybody!!

*** Copies of Devoted to Death: Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint will be available for sale and signing

On Sunday, February 3rd, please join us to celebrate the Morbid Anatomy Library's new acquisition of a large and spectacular lot of materials relating to Santa Muerte, a Mexican-based “cult” or possibly even a “new religion” which takes as its central figure a sanctified Lady Death. Literally translating to “Holy Death” or “Saint Death,” the worship of Santa Muerte--like Day of the Dead--is a popular form of religious expression rooted in a rich syncretism of the beliefs of the native Latin Americans and the colonizing Spanish Catholics.

Tonight's celebration will begin with a highly-illustrated lecture on the roots, history and worship of Santa Muerte by Dr. R. Andrew Chesnut, Chair in Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and author of Devoted to Death: Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint. Following, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions during a Q and A which with the lecturer and death in Mexico scholar Salvador Olguín moderated by David Metcalfe of The Revealer.

Come early (doors open at 6) and stay late to enjoy thematic music and special artisanal cocktails utilizing the favorite spirits of "The Boney Lady" herself, compliments of Friese Undine. You can also admire--and indulge in!--a special Santa Muerte and Jesus Malverde Wedding Cake compliments of our generous Santa Muerte artifact donors Tonya Hurley and Tracy Hurley Martin, and take in a temporary mini-exhibit of the amazing donations themselves. There will also be gorgeous funeral floral arrangements by Emily Thompson Flowers, and Dr. R. Andrew Chesnut will be happy to sign copies of his new book Devoted to Death: Santa Muerte, the Skeleton Saint which will be available for sale.

"Santa Muerte, Posada’s Mexico and the End of Times" Guest Post by Salvador Olguín, Morbid Anatomy Scholar in Residence

For this non-end-of-days end-of-days, a word on Death in Mayan and Mexican culture from new Morbid Anatomy Scholar in Residence Salvador Olguín:

I’ve been following the Morbid Anatomy blog for quite some time. This is my second guest post in the blog (the first can be found here); this time I am officially writing as Morbid Anatomy’s new Scholar in Residence. I told Joanna Ebenstein I wanted to write a few lines to commemorate such major occasion as the end of the 13th baktun of the Mayan calendar –that is, the 13th cycle of 144,000 days since the world began, otherwise known as The End of Times. Posting this text after the announcement of the Morbid Anatomy Library’s recent acquisition of a lot of Santa Muerte artifacts, also celebrated in this article by David Metcalf, is a happy coincidence. Finally, being able to use this post to introduce Posada’s Mexico, a book about José Guadalupe Posada recently acquired by the MA library, is a real treat.

José Guadalupe Posada was a Mexican engraver and illustrator who started working in the late 1800s as a cartoonist. He produced a vast number of etchings, most of which first appeared in the news papers and cheap periodicals published in Mexico City during the last decade of the 19th and the early 1900s. Posada’s was a time of social turmoil. The publications where he worked criticized the autocratic government of Porfirio Díaz for favoring Mexico’s Europeanized higher classes over the workers and the dispossessed. In this milieu, Posada used his art to satirize the rich and powerful, but also to illustrate current events and the news: murders, cases of cannibalism, floods, earthquakes and the End of the World, which people in Mexico believed was imminent 100 years ago.

Posada created a series of iconic characters like Don Chepito Marihuano (Mr. Chepito The Pothead), a gentleman who entertained the habit of smoking large amounts of weed. You can see him holding a skull, Hamlet-style, in the bottom illustration above. One of his most iconic illustrations was La Calavera Garbancera, later baptized as La Catrina by Diego Rivera. She came to represent Death personified for all Mexicans. Posada conceived her as a working class woman of mixed Native American and European blood, wearing a pretentious French hat. Later Rivera painted her in one of his murals (4th image down), but instead of using her as a vehicle of social commentary he dressed her up in a full fancy gown, making her a proud symbol of the unification of Mexico’s dual roots: Spanish and Native American. The fact that this symbol is embodied as a skeleton shows the importance of the personification of Death in Mexican iconography, and makes La Catrina a direct precursor of Santa Muerte.

Most Mesoamerican cultures had a cyclical notion of time. There were times of destruction and times of renewal. There had been other Worlds, and other versions of Humanity in their mythical pass, and there would be new worlds and a new humanity in the future. A Mayan wouldn’t be surprised that the world didn’t come to an end: today marks the beginning of the 14th baktun. Death remains the only certain thing in life; believing She’s a person, a being that watches over us, is certainly a soothing idea. Knowing She likes to smoke, drink, and feast like Santa Muerte does is simply the best. Take a look at these images from Posada’s Mexico, now available for researchers at the Morbid Anatomy Library.

You can find out more about Santa Muerte in these recent posts (1, 2); you can find out more about our upcoming Santa Muerte lecture and party by clicking here, and more about The Morbid Anatomy Library by clicking here. You can find out more about Morbid Anatomy Scholar in Residence Salvador Olguín by clicking here. All images are scans from Posada’s Mexico, a book about José Guadalupe Posada recently acquired by the Morbid Anatomy library.

Brandel Chamblee and the anatomy of Brooks Koepka’s dominant US Open performance – GolfDigest.com

Richard Heathcote

Brooks Koepka poses with the winner's trophy after his victory at the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

Golf Channels Brandel Chamblee doesnt just shoot from the lip, as many of his detractors no doubt think he does. Whatever his analysis (or whether you agree or not), thought and research have gone into it.

So, that said, here is his take from the Live From the U.S. Open show on Sunday night on how Brooks Koepka dismantled Erin Hills and the field:

You sit around sometimes at the 19th hole and you play that game, the composite player. What if somebody drove it like Nicklaus, hit their irons like Johnny Miller, had a short game like Seve, putted like Tiger Woods?

More contemporary analysis would be, what if you hit as straight as Jim Furyk and putted like Brandt Snedeker? Well, [Koepka] hit as many fairways this week as Jim Furyk. He putted as well as Brandt Snedeker. In between, he was a man of his own.

RELATED: Brooks Koepka muscles his way into history

You start to look at what he did and you wonder, why hasnt this guy done this all the time, what he did this week versus other weeks? Typically he averages about 50 percent of the fairways. This week he hit 87.5 percent of the fairways. When you consider he was driving the ball about 320 yards, thats mind-blowing enough. Typically he hits 63 percent of the greens. This week 86 percent of the greens. Incidentally, the first person in history to hit over 80 percent of the fairways and 80 percent of the greens.

This is the more important picture: the rough proximity. For whatever reason, hes not good out of the rough. Now thats the reason he hits only 63 percent of the greens. Hes almost the worst on tour out of the rough. But this week, because he was not ever in the rough he could match greens for every fairway he hit.

Yes, you can say the fairways were wide, and they were, but they were also sloped. He was quite a bit better than average and quite a bit better than his average. And time and time again he was amongst, if not the longest in the field. Hes standing up there, hes never done this before, playing for a U.S. Open, this sets him up to do the rest of the work with his iron play.

And there you have it, the anatomy of a dominant performance.

Human Anatomy Walkthrough – Video

Human Anatomy Walkthrough
A walkthrough with advice and pointers of my process for drawing human anatomy. For Photoshop CS5 (may be compatible with other programs, but tinkering will probably be necessary). I am by no means a #39;go to #39; person for this stuff, I #39;m still learning. But I #39;ve been asked for help in the past and figured this would be a good way of going about it. Nothing I say is gospel and I #39;m aware my anatomy isn #39;t perfect; I #39;m still learning. Nevertheless, I hope this helps~From:Alt AeinViews:1 0ratingsTime:01:17:26More inEntertainment
