The Vampire Diaries Spoilers: All Aboard the Shane Train!

With a few weeks to go until the resumption of The Vampire Diaries Season 4, TV Line recently spoke with executive producer Julie Plec.

What can viewers look forward to in 2013? On whom will "After School Special," the January 17 installment, focus? And just how many members of the undead will Jeremy actually murder?

Visit TV Line now for many answers from Plec and scroll down for a few excerpts from the interview...

All about the Shane train: Shane is the captain of the crazy train in the next chapter, which is really all about revealing more about his agenda, learning more about this mythical character of Silas that he keeps mentioning, getting closer and closer to the location and the means to dig up both the cure and Silas — and then the fallout of that choice and what that all means.

Put him in, coach! [Jeremy is] going to be a hardcore, lean and mean vampire-fighting machine over the next couple episodes – but with an unlikely coach in the form of Damon Salvatore.

The 2013 premiere... Has a lot to do with what Rebekah’s up to. She’s been gone for quite some time. She’s missed a lot. So [in] her efforts to try to get information out of everybody…she gets caught up on the goings-on in Mystic Falls in her absence, including that Stefan and Elena are broken up, that Elena slept with Damon, that there’s a sire bond at play, that the cure hasn’t been found yet – all kinds of great things which she gets out of them in the form of a pretty malicious detention at school.

What do you think, fans? Which storyline are you most excited for? And do you agree with our grade for The Vampire Diaries so far?

Chicago Fire Midseason Report Card: A-

We're high on Castle and less enthusiastic about The Vampire Diaries.

Where do we stand on Chicago Fire following its opening set of episodes? This NBC drama is the focus of the latest TV Fanatic Report Card...

Chicago Fire Cast Photo

Best Episode: “Merry Christmas, Etc” had everything we could ever want out of an episode: lives in the balance, Boden’s growing suspicion/doubts over the missing drugs, Casey and Dawson growing a little closer, Casey’s past. It was a great package of just about everything Chicago Fire has going for it.

Worst Episode: The series premiere. Pilots for potential series have the unenviable job of showing the best a program has to offer to audiences and network executives, and aside from a rudimentary checking off of boxes – fires, hot guys, rivalry, etc – there wasn’t very much exploration past that. Once Chicago Fire found where its strengths were (the cast, ditching the rivalry, shoving the periphery characters out of the way for now) things picked up quickly.

Best Character: Casey and Severide. These two work far better as friends and coworkers than rivals. Severide’s love of the job, desire to help people and the kind way he has with people is an interesting juxtaposition with his drug-addicted interior. He takes the pills for pain, but his increasingly erratic behavior is dragging more and more people down with him, sending them into moral gray areas that wouldn’t necessarily go down if it were anyone else.

Casey, on the other hand, is a genuinely sweet man who is only trying to do what’s best for him and his team. His unwavering loyalty to his team is wonderful, as is his compassion for the people he serves, but there’s also darkness to his past.

Worst Character: Hallie, Casey’s girlfriend. I’m not even sure if she’s still around since she and Matt broke up, or if she’s coming back. My biggest hope is we never have to deal with her again. She’s boring, a complete mismatch for Casey, and in a show like this it’s best to keep the character’s personal and private lives all contained where they work – much like Grey’s Anatomy does.

Best Fire: Without a doubt, the pilot episode where Severide rescues Casey.

Biggest Head Scratcher: How is Severide’s arm not out of its socket by now? We’re told his shoulder has severe damage and it’s amazing he’s lasted as long as he has, yet he continually puts his shoulder in harm's way.

Second Biggest Head Scratcher: Cruz letting Flacko die in the fire. I don’t really mind that a violent, drug dealing criminal burned to death, but Cruz’s story came so out of left field, and his brother is so unlikable, that I don’t much care either way what happens to Cruz or his sibling. This head-scratcher doesn’t even mention the fact that it stands in direct contrast to his job.

Hopes for 2013: Severide’s shoulder story starts progressing sooner rather than later; we learn more about Casey’s past, Dawson and Shay’s accident aftermath and the Hermann’s budding limousine empire.

Overall Grade: A-

Revenge Sneak Peek: An Unlikely Alliance

Revenge returns January 6, and when it does, an unlikely alliance will form.

After one of the series' fun winks at itself and its fans - Victoria pretending she's never noticed the view of Emily's beach house from her balcony - she gets down to business and pleads for Emily's help.

Daniel, she says, is in over his head running Grayson Global, lacking the ruthless demeanor required of such a position. Only Emily, Victoria says, can bring her son back from the precipice of ... something.

Very bad things await Danny, she's convinced of that. Obviously Emily agrees to help, and obviously she's going to be running her own game. But where does the Revengenda end and the genuine emotions begin?

Bones Photo Preview: Booth, Brennan and Ballroom Dancing!

Bones returns with TWO new episodes back-to-back on Monday, January 14.

In the first hour, Fox pulls a little cross-promotion with So You Think You Can Dance as the team goes undercover to solve the weekly murder - and dance champs Eliana Girard and Dmitry Chaplin guest star.

In "The Diamond in the Rough," Booth and Brennan reprise their classic aliases Buck and Wanda Moosejaw at a ballroom dancing TV competition. The two SYTYCD pros are some of their stiff competition.

Fortunately, it looks like B&B may be able to hang rather convincingly:

If nothing else, it'll be worth it to see David Boreanaz put on hairspray.

Also, Hodgins and Angela's expressions sum things up marvelously.

Fox has also released promotional photos from the second hour. Click to enlarge images from "The Archaeologist in the Cocoon" below for your first glimpse at this two-episode Bones 2013 premiere:

Castle Midseason Report Card: A-

With the first half of the season behind us - and as we brace for Meredith's return in "Significant Others" on January 7 - let's take a look back at Castle Season 5 so far, shall we?

We've already submitted midseason reports for Once Upon a Time and The Mentalist, so read on and see if you agree with our grade for Castle thus far this year...

Caskett at Home

Best Episode: This category was quite difficult as we've had some wonderful episodes this season but the winner was "Secret's Safe With Me." Castle dropping Alexis off at college was incredibly sweet and Castle and Beckett shared one of the most sexy, romantic handshakes in TV history. Runners up: The great drama in "Probable Cause" and the scifi, campy fun of "Final Frontier."

Worst Episode: "Swan Song." I know some fans enjoyed the unique documentary style format but I hated it. The inside joke of characters either overacting or becoming wallflowers in front of the camera ran it's course rather quickly. It's one of the few Castle episodes that I was grateful to see end.

Biggest Improvement: Duh. Definitely Castle and Beckett finally becoming a couple. I don't think the show could have survived another season of the Will they?/Won't they? without frustrating it's fans past their tolerance levels. Now we are blessed with a fun, sexy, romance to go along with our weekly dose of whodunit.

Biggest Disappointment: Surprisingly there haven't been any huge disappointments this season but there were a couple of small ones. I wished the morning after scene in "After the Storm" could have given us a minute or two more of bliss before the real world…and Martha came crashing in. And all of the interruptions to Castle and Beckett's first romantic weekend getaway in "Murder, He Wrote" started to test my patience in an otherwise solid outing.

Hopes for 2013:

  • I'm dying for the past to resurface and have Kate admit to Castle that she almost went to the Hamptons with him at the end of Castle season 2… before he sauntered off with ex-wife Gina.
  • How did Beckett start reading Castle's books? Will we and Richard Castle ever know?
  • More girl time. Alexis and Kate, Kate and Lanie. And most especially Kate and Martha. There hasn't been nearly enough of these two strong but very different woman and since I'm a huge fan of Susan Sullivan I really want to see more.
  • Can Capt. Gates and Castle get trapped in an elevator and be forced to actually talk to one another?  I'm not sure what they'd say but I know I want to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.
  • More romance! A Castle crime mystery is always fun but after waiting five seasons for some lovin', there can't possibly be enough to satisfy.

Overall Grade:  A-

Now it's your turn, Castle fans. Give us your grade for this season of Castle.

Anatomically themed oil paintings by British painter, Teresa Duck melding together visceral, botanical, and physical objects into almost abstract amalgamations.

Teresa says that,

Through arrangements of (an amalgamation of/ a melding of) anatomical elements, abstract forms and inanimate objects, Teresa explores the relationship between these subjects and our emotional experience of physical reality.  By examining the human and animal  bodies in the form of individual organs —both as physical objects in themselves as the form of meat, alongside the body itself as vehicle which our sense of self inhabits—Teresa questions the effects this has on our relationship with the physical world and our sense of individuality and identity.

Anatomy of a perfect cottage tips and trends from Parry Sound experts – parrysound.com

(Photos courtesy Schlager Inc.)

Peter Olyschlager, Schlager Inc.

Landscaping and hardscaping projects is a great way to enhance enjoyment of a property and increase its value. Flagstone patios and fire pits are really popular. They add to the outdoor living space of the cottage and are a nice area for family to get together and socialize. Its like creating an outdoor living room, but better! It also greatly adds the retail value of the cottage.

Granite is the product of choice with landscaping because it completely matches the natural environment. However, we often find limestone is a great option as well and can blend in naturally, depending on the style of cottage being built. Also, many man-made products have come a long way to complement the natural surroundings of cottage country.

Reputable contractors have the environment in mind. Using plants that are native to our area is important because it creates less waste by helping reduce water costs because they naturally adapt. They are better for our native wildlife species such as bees, butterflies and birds. Its important to use vegetation when possible to control run-off into the lakes; rather than clear-cut a property, maintain vegetation in place to filters pollutants. Also during construction, all measures must be taken to control run off into lakes and streams by using things such as silt curtains, and try to disturb as small of area as possible.

People often have to do costly and time-consuming backtracking when they hit roadblocks along the way because they did not first consult with all of the right contractors and municipalities before they begin their project. It is good to do thorough research before you begin, to know what permits you need and what bylaws exist, so you do not have to stop the work while waiting for these things to be sorted out. Hiring the right contractor is important and getting lots of information from them will help you keep things on track. Not to say there is never hiccups along the way, but you can plan and prepare to try and avoid them.

(Photos courtesy The Deck Store)

Stan Weiland, president, The Deck Store

Some of the deciding factors when it comes to selecting a decking material include budget, usage, exposure, environment, aesthetics, and personal preference. If a client wants a decking material that will last a long time and requires very little maintenance, a composite or PVC decking board would be the right choice. PVC decking performs great in pretty much all environments due to the fact there are no organic ingredients in the boards. Make sure the installer knows how to work with the plastic materials and understands how to fasten them to eliminate expansion and contraction issues.

For lower budgets, pressure-treated wood or cedar lumber are viable options but they tend to require more maintenance to keep them looking good. Also, the life span of a wood deck in some environments is only 10 years because the quality of the wood used for decking today is not up to the same standards as what was used 15-25 years ago; due to the high demand, younger trees are being harvested and the integrity of the material is not what it needs to be to last for any substantial amount of time. As well, it takes a lot of work to keep a wood deck looking nice I dont know too many people who enjoy spending their cottage time sanding and staining their wood decks.

Coming up with the right design is a process that involves getting to know the client and how they plan to use their outdoor space. We like to gather information using questions such as: How do you plan to use your deck (for dining, lounging, entertaining, access to the yard, sunbathing, evening cocktails, etc.)? How many people on average will be on the deck? Do you require privacy from any direction? Does it get hot on your deck and is shade needed? Are there any special features that you would like to see, such as borders, inlays, lights? Do you have a view that you would like to maintain?

(Photos courtesy Black Rock Landscaping)

Larry Martin, owner, Black Rock Landscaping

Trends are always evolving with gardening. Cottage country gardening is no different. Low maintenance gardens, which are practical for people who dont want to spend weekends gardening, are coming back in style right now. Also gaining in popularity again is the inclusion of some grass lawn areas for childrens activities. And combination gardens a healthy mixture of hardy perennials and shrubs are always a hit with people because they look great and are easier to maintain than purely flower gardens.

There is a lot of interest lately in preserving shorelines and near-shore areas because of their ecological importance. There are ways to beautify the waterfront and still maintain its natural function. Cleaning shorelines of dead limbs, debris and unwanted weeds provides a tidier appearance. Plant selectively with desired plants to give some colour to shoreline indigenous plants are best but do so with an eye towards maintaining natural appearance. Some common plants that can be used are iris, cotoneaster, daylilies, stephanandra, and hosta (if deer arent a problem) to name a few.

A lot of cottagers are adding raised beds into their designs because they offer a number of advantages. They are easier to maintain, offer a better planting base where soil is poor, accent an area that is plan and flat, and offer the opportunity raise and stack plants to different levels to show off different species.

People want to put planters on their docks to offer lake appeal, but there are valid concerns about chemicals entering the water from them. You can have flowering pots on your dock while still being environmentally friendly simply by using drip trays, which work well to collect excess water and fertilizer and also help to prevent deck stains.

Rick Zanussi, owner, Canadian Contracting Services

When it comes to a build, dont overlook the basement, where the use of ICF (insulated concrete form) is becoming the standard. This type of basement foundation provides many advantages. It gives incredible structure and an easily achieved level, plumb and square foundation. As important, a good quality ICF provides an incredible insulation value of R30. ICF foundations are certainly more expensive than a standard, uninsulated block foundation but the extra cost is well worth it. A solid, level and square foundation is the key building block to a quality build.

Electrical planning is paramount for providing all electrical needs a customer wants. Property owners should take the time to go through the entire build with the electrical subcontractor and builder, on site. Think about the layout of the Great Room, kitchen and bedrooms with respect to where you will or may need receptacles. The best rule of thumb is to install more receptacles than less.

Exterior windows and doors should never be skimped on. We encourage our customers to spend more to achieve more in R-value, weather resistance and longevity of windows and doors. Youll spend far more time gazing out windows at the cottage than at your permanent home you want to enjoy the cottage viewsso a good rule of thumb is to err towards larger windows rather than smaller.

In order to reduce stress and building-process issues, property owners need to spend the time to find the right builder. Never go with the cheapest builder you can find. A quality finished product is never achieved by being the least expensive. Your cottage must be built properly, meeting all structural, system, landscaping and aesthetic requirements. These are never accomplished unless you spend the money required to achieve them.

Owners need to research builders thoroughly. This takes time and effort, but is imperative to limit problems during the build. Take the time to find a builder with a very good reputation. Ask for contact information of previous customers and speak with them o
penly to determine their experience with the contractor. Ask builders how long their employees have been with them. These tradesmen are paramount for a quality build as they are the people who do the actual work and their qualifications and experience must be extensive.

A Very Merry Christmas Indeed: 18th Century Italian Pathological Nativity Scene Crèches!

Towards my sincere wish that each of you has a very merry Christmas today, please accept this virtual gift: two intriguing and lovely pathologically-detailed 18th century Italian nativity scene crèche figures from the collection of the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Yale University.

An excerpt from the article on Atlas Obscura:

Holiday Creche Figures With Goiters

...The lovely ladies seen above were made to be part of a classic nativity scene, welcoming the infant Christ into the world. They are shown suffering from what was once a relatively common malady: goiters. These enlarged thyroids caused painful swellings in the throat usually due to iodine deficiency in the diet, and were particularly prevalent in Alpine regions of Europe where the soil was naturally low in iodine.

These two dolls are known as Crèche (or Presepio) figures, and are found in Nativity scenes. The country women, garbed in handmade peasant dress, have unusual features that led to their inclusion in the Yale’s Medical Historical Library. Both have prominent goiters on their necks. Goiters are swelling of the thyroid gland.

Creche figures often depicted “realistic” features, and in the 18th century, peasant and country folk were thought to be a great addition, often in the background of the scene. Figures with goiters attending the birth of Baby Jesus is an entire level of realism never expected in a Nativity scene...

We often think of the beauty associated with the Nativity, but in reality, people in earlier centuries had a variety of ailments that manifested on the outside, and weren’t removed. Skin diseases, tumors, and goiters, which we don’t often see in people with the help of modern medicine, were not unusual.

--Melissa Grafe is the John R. Bumstead Librarian for Medical History at Yale University.

You can read the whole article--from which this is excerpted--on Atlas Obscura by clicking here. And thanks, Dylan Thuras, for sending this along!

And Merry Christmas, y'all!

Happy Saint Victoria Day!

Happy Saint Victoria Day, Morbid Anatomy Readers!

More about this lovely saint--whose remains were discussed at length in yesterday's post--from Wikipedia:

Saints Victoria, Anatolia, and Audax (Italian: Sante Vittoria, Anatolia, e Audace) are venerated as martyrs and saints by the Catholic Church...

Their legend... recounts that, in the time of the Emperor Decius, Anatolia and Victoria were sisters whose marriage was arranged to two noble, non-Christian Roman men. They resisted matrimony and their prospective grooms denounced them as Christians. They received permission to imprison the women on their estates and convince them to renounce their faith.

Anatolia's suitor, Titus Aurelius, gave up, and handed her back to the authorities. Victoria’s suitor, Eugenius, was more persistent, but also ended up returning her to the authorities.

Victoria’s legend states that she was stabbed through the heart in 250 AD at Trebula Mutuesca (today Monteleone Sabino). An elaboration on her legend states that her murderer was immediately struck with leprosy, and died six days later....

Due to the translation of their relics, their cult spread across Italy. The body of Saint Victoria was transferred in 827 by Abbot Peter of Farfa to Mount Matenano from the Piceno because of the Moorish invasions. The town of Santa Vittoria in Matenano is named after her. Ratfredus, subsequent Abbot of Farfa, brought the body to Farfa on 20 June 931... Saint Victoria's preserved remains are currently on display at the Santa Maria della Vittoria church in Rome.

I just had to make this video with this version of the song (I love SP and I love Katherine!!!); I got the idea weeks ago so I really don #39;t care how overused this song is, I think is beautiful and way too perfect for Grey #39;s Anatomy current storyline not to make a vid out of it... I hope you like it!!From:XPareceQueVaALloverXViews:0 0ratingsTime:03:13More inEntertainment
