It’s hard to believe that it’s been 5 years since Street Anatomy began as a small medical illustration blog. Each year I’ve seen it grow exponentially all thanks to our wonderful audience and the amazing artists who use human anatomy in their art.

I want to thank each and every one of you for following Street Anatomy and for supporting us in bringing you the best anatomical art out there from all over the world!!

This past year brought us a very successful gallery show, OBJECTIFY THIS: Female Anatomy Dissected and Displayed, numerous features and interviews in blogs, an expanded gallery store, and increasing relationships with many anatomical artists.

But, rather than make this about reminiscing, I’m going to take you forward to where Street Anatomy is headed. We have so many exciting projects coming up in the next few months that I’ll preview for you below! You’ll hear more about these projects in the days and weeks ahead, so stay tuned!

Street Anatomy website redesign

After showcasing anatomical art for the past 5 years, I am redesigning Street Anatomy into an easily scannable and searchable responsive grid layout.  It will be a beautiful experience across your mobile device, iPad/tablet, and desktop! I’ll also be adding street art and tattoo gallery pages, an exhibition section, featured artists section, and much more!

Valentine’s Day Anatomical Heart Pop-Up Shop

Street Anatomy will be participating in an anatomical heart Valentines pop up shop in London, put on by the delectable Miss Cakehead of Eat Your Heart Out and medical illustrator, Emily Evans. The pop up shop, held in a secret London location, will feature products with anatomical hearts just in time to give to your love on Valentine’s Day.

Dissecting Art, Intersecting Anatomy Exhibition

Street Anatomy is co-curating a group exhibition in Chicago called Dissecting Art, Intersecting Anatomy: Merging contemporary art with the works of Pauline Lariviere. The exhibition is an homage to Pauline Lariviere (1906–1988), a French-Canadian artist whose fame came from her extensive and groundbreaking work in medical and anatomical illustration. We’ll be bringing in the anatomical art of 10 extraordinary artists from around the world!

SXSW Street Anatomy Panel Speaker

Street Anatomy will be teaming up with Tristen George, Creative Director at the pharma ad agency AbelsonTaylor, to speak about Presenting Complex Information with Simplicity.

Skull Appreciation Day Exhibition with Skull-a-Day 

Street Anatomy and Noah Scalin of Skull-a-Day will be curating the third annual Skull Appreciation Day at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago this June!

Are they making you slightly uncomfortable?  These little “tumorous balls of flesh”, called Fleshlettes, are the creation of California-based artist Jonathan Payne who specializes in creature and character design. Sculpted from materials like super sculpey, polymer clay, acrylic, and even human hair, each Fleshlette has a name and unique personality. They’re so grotesque they’re almost cute…

This Thursday, January 10, I am so very excited to be hosting my former colleague at the American Museum of Natural History--library director Tom Baione--at Observatory. He will be talking about--and showing scores of amazing illustrations from!--a variety of rarely seen illustrated books residing in the museum's research library special collections as explored in his new book Natural Histories: Extraordinary ?Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History Library?. Most people are well acquainted with the front-stage wonders of New York's American Museum of Natural History--the world class habitat group dioramas, the highly stylized hall of biodiversity, the epic dinosaur skeletons; what is less well known is the equally astounding back-stage collection, which includes an world-renowned collection of exquisite, rare, and beautifully illustrated books on the natural sciences held by museum's research library. The new book Natural Histories: Extraordinary ?Rare Book Selections from the American Museum of Natural History Library?, edited by AMNH's Tom Baione, brings these hidden works to the fore, showcasing forty extraordinary works created between the 16th and 20th centuries, covering all seven continents, and spanning such diverse scientific fields as anthropology, astronomy, earth science,? paleontology, and zoology. The book also features essays about each work by Museum curators, scientists, and librarians, as well as forty extraordinary, suitable-for-framing art prints of images from the book.

Tom Baione, a Brooklyn native, started working in the Museum's Library in 1995 ?after attending Pratt Institute's School of Library and Information? Science. After years in the Library's Special Collections and Reference ?Services units, Tom became the Library's Director in 2010. He is an active? member of New York's Grolier Club and lives in midtown with his high?school sweetheart. The Museum was his favorite childhood destination and he still reports a thrill upon entering the museum each day.

Raccoon Head Taxidermy Class with Rogue Taxidermist Katie Innamorato
Date: Saturday, February 9
Time: 11 – 5 PM

This class is part of The Morbid Anatomy Art Academy

This course will introduce students to basic and fundamental taxidermy techniques and procedures. Students will be working with donated raccoon skins and will be going through the steps to do a head mount. The class is only available to 5 students, allowing for more one on one interaction and assistance. Students will be working with tanned and lightly prepped skin; there will be no skinning of the animals in class. This is a great opportunity to learn the basic steps to small and large mammal taxidermy. All materials will be supplied by the instructor, and you will leave class with your own raccoon head mount.

Rogue taxidermist Katie Innamorato has a BFA in sculpture from SUNY New Paltz, has been featured on the hit TV show "Oddities," and has had her work featured at La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles, California. She is self and professionally taught, and has won multiple first place ribbons and awards at the Garden State Taxidermy Association Competition. Her work is focussed on displaying the cyclical connection between life and death and growth and decomposition. Katie is a member of the Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists, and with all M.A.R.T. members she adheres to strict ethical guidelines when acquiring specimens and uses roadkill, scrap, and donated skins to create mounts.
