Kyle Chandler Cast as Lead in The Vatican

Score! Kyle Chandler is on his way back to television.

The beloved former Friday Night Lights star will headline Showtime's The Vatican, a drama directed by Ridley Scott and set against the backdrop of the modern day Catholic Church.

Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights

Chandler will portray Cardinal Thomas Duffy on the series, the Archbishop of New York whose teachings are especially progressive and troubling to many in the Church.

He will be joined by Matthew Goode and Sebastian Koch as Papal Secretary Bernd Koch and Cardinal Marco Malerba, respectively.

“Kyle Chandler is one of the most talented and sought-after actors working today,“ said Showtime president David Nevins in a statement. “With Kyle, Matthew Goode and Sebastian Koch, Ridley and Paul have put together a powerhouse cast to anchor this incredibly timely show.”

Altogether now: Clear eyes, full hearts, Showtime can't lose!

Blue Bloods Review: The One Who Breaks

"Warriors" took Blue Bloods fans to one of the scariest scenes known to humankind. The middle of a 16 year old's driving lesson.  The surprise was that it wasn't NIcky that invoked our fear, it was Erin.

Who would have guessed that Erin was an aggressive driver?  She yelled at other drivers as though they could hear her and used the horn liberally, as Frank put it and did it all while coaching her nervous daughter.

Danny Looks Happy

I couldn't believe she instructed Nicky to cross over the double yellow line instead of waiting for the cab to move, then criticized that she wasn't going fast enough. Oye. I didn't blame Nicky for calling an end to mother / daughter driving time.  As she told Erin in this Blue Bloods quote.

Behind enemy lines in a tank, for sure I'd want you to be behind the wheel. | permalink

Apparently Reagans were not known for their driving prowess.  Henry gave away his car. Frank hasn't driven in years and Danny's good as long as he's doing excessive speeds. The only one with any patience was Jamie and I suppose that's another perk of having a large family.  There are plenty of options to fall back on.

One complaint. When Nicky and Jamie came to pick up Erin, where were the seatbelts?  I know the car was old but no one seemed to be buckled in. Not only is that illegal, it's just plain dangerous.

At the Reagan family dinner, Nicky certainly lit into Frank. She couldn't understand how Frank could stand on the podium while a young woman was being sent to certain death.

I saw it both ways. The idealistic view was that Frank should have protested but in reality that would have done little.  Instead, playing politics and calling in favors from friends behind the scenes did more than any uproar could.  However, Nicky's prodding may have made Frank work a little harder.

I couldn't believe that Linda brought up Danny's anger management class in the middle of the family dinner but I loved the look on Danny's face when she did. I'd guess that's something he would have liked to have kept private but not much is kept secret amongst Reagans.

Danny's right. Someone should get angry when a child is shot but the therapist had a point as well.  That kind of anger can eat away at you. If Danny doesn't want to burn out, he needs to find ways to deal with that anger so that it doesn't turn into an uncontrolled rage.

As Danny said, the cops and gang bangers aren't about to hold hands and sing Kumbaya any time soon and we want to see Danny Reagan around for many seasons to come.

Revenge Sneak Peek: Nice Day For a Sail

We know what's coming based on the closing scene of last week's Revenge, but just-married Jack and Amanda haven't yet realized that they have unwanted, dangerous company on the boat.

Until the opening moments of tomorrow night's "Sacrifice." Take a look:

How will Mr. & Mrs. Porter respond to Nate's gun-wielding threats?

Follow the link for more Revenge sneak peeks that hint at that. Suffice it to say, Amanda the fighter is less panicked than Jack, and already thinking about how they can kill Nate instead.

How do you think this will all play out? Who will go down with the ship? There are undoubtedly more layers and twists to come, especially if their friends on land fear the worst and take action.

Simply jaw dropping fluid paper sculptures by Beijing-based artist Li Hongbo who has quite an affinity to paper. His fascination with the flexible nature of paper began with the traditional Chinese “honeycomb” paper toys used for decorations. He took one apart and realized, “It’s really quite simple. Yet the flexibility in terms of shape and properties is amazing.” And so, he began making paper sculptures by gluing tens of thousands of sheets together with carefully placed strips of glue and then carving the paper blocks into sculptures.

The paper sculptures can be manipulated through stretching, bending, and warping, turning seemingly solid structures into phantom-like beings.

The Vampire Diaries Round Table: "Down the Rabbit Hole"

The Vampire Diaries traveled "Down the Rabbit Hole" last night, as one significant character returned, one departed... and one may have departed for good.

In this edition of the TV Fanatic Round Table, staff members Matt Richenthal, Miranda Wicker, Steve Marsi and Leigh Raines break down the latest happenings and wonder: Where will Tyler head to now?

----------------------------------

What was your favorite scene or quote from the episode?
Matt: It's short, it's simple, it's so Damon: Life sucks. Wear a helmet.

Miranda: This was a heavy episode, y'all. For its heartbreaking qualities, I'll go with Tyler and Caroline's conversation on the porch. It was so sad but there was just this huge amount of love between them. Ugh. Can't they just get their happily ever after already? Honorable mention goes to Bonnie telling Shane that if his leg was broken he better not stand on it. I love her best when she's snarky.

Steve: The climactic raising of Silas. For all my gripes about the ongoing search for the magic elixir, who wasn't on the edge of their seat as our merry band of cure-seekers meandered through the catacombs? Wondering who would reach him first and what would happen when and if that happened - followed by the actual result - made for pretty riveting 20 minutes.

Leigh: I'd say it was the split screen between Caroline and Klaus and Damon and that hunter all finding out that - dun dun dun! - there's only one dose of the cure.

Sadder moment: Tyler leaving, Jeremy dying or Damon turning into a decent person?
Matt: Wait... Tyler came back?!? I kid, I kid. But that guy exits Mystic Falls so often, it's like it's some dangerous place full of supernatural creatures that want him dead. So I can't be too broken up about his latest departure. I also don't believe Jeremy's death will stick, so the answer falls to Damon. How depressing will be if he's just some saintly vampire now who isn't bitter, cynical and sarcastic? Perish the thought, right?

Miranda: Tyler leaving was definitely sad. See my answer to #1 for that. But Jeremy dying? Wow. I didn't see that coming at all. Shocking and sad. And also confusing. They just raised Silas who can supposedly bring people back from the dead. So, how long exactly will Jer-bear remain deceased before someone - cough... Elena... cough - brokers some kind of deal with the Super Immortal? If he remains dead, well, RIP Jeremy's abs. And biceps.

Steve: Hard to be sad when it's unclear if any of the above will stick (I purposely don't watch The Vampire Diaries promo after the show, so bear with me if I missed any obvious answers there). Silas can raise the dead, so Jeremy may not be finished, while Tyler will clearly return at some point and Damon will forever be a complex emotional headcase.

Leigh: As evidenced by my almost violent reaction to my television, my saddest moment was Jeremy dying. We need some humans on this show. And as annoying as Elena can be, we can't totally off her whole fam. Plus, I like looking at Jer.

Where did Tyler go?
Matt: I don't know. But can he bring Phoebe Tonkin back with him again when he returns?

Miranda: Fiji. Tahiti. Somewhere warm and beautiful that requires him to be shirtless.

Steve: Does it matter?

Leigh: He went back to the mountains where he met Hayley. He can get out all that hybrid rage and meet more of his own.

To which character would you give the cure?
Matt: Rebekah. I would give her anything she asked for. Seriously... ANYthing, Claire Holt. Think about it.

Miranda: Knowing my luck, I would have the cure in my hands and then trip over a rock and spill it all over the ground and end up mauled by a pack of angry vampires. So, no one.

Steve: Kat. She'd theoretically be easier to kill off the show as a mere mortal.

Leigh: Tough call. I think Stefan wants it the most. Might have to give that idea a whirl. Klaus is also an obvious choice because so much drama and fear would end. However, I kinda wanna see what happens between him and Caroline.

Was Katherine's return a pleasant surprise?
Matt: Not really. I'll reserve full judgment until we learn where this is all going, but it's grown rather tiresome to just have Katherine show up here and there, with no explanation given to where she has been or how the heck she manages to come back at certain, precise moments.

Miranda: A definite surprise, yes, but not exactly a pleasant one because this one actually makes my brain hurt to think about. I get that this is a show about vampires and witches, but it's entirely outside the realm of plausibility that Katherine would show up on this island and be able to imitate Elena so flawlessly this time. I mean, where did Katherine get Elena's exact outfit? Did Elena pack doubles of every outfit? I did love Elena's face and the disbelieving "Oh, no" when Katherine jumped her. That was kind of awesome.

Steve: I wasn't expecting it, but that didn't mean I was pleased by it. Maybe the surprise will be more pleasant in the coming weeks, when we learn how and why she got there. Until then, it's hard not to roll your eyes a little at TV's Sexiest Plot Device.

Leigh: Katherine always comes out of left field, but I do enjoy her. However, she just killed Jeremy... so now I'm pissed.

I noticed my road bike gathering a fine layer of dust after its lengthy hibernation this winter.  I’m not one to suffer through biking in Chicago through the freezing cold and snow, but it’s about this time that I start getting the itch to get back on my bike.  After recently rediscovering this muscle skin biking suit we posted about back in 2009, I am even more excited to get back into riding.

Warsaw based designer Tomek Pietek designed the prototype of this suit a while back and it has only recently been put into production and available for sale.  It is simply stunning and sure to turn heads whether you’re dodging cars down busy city streets or in a tough Cyclocross race.

Tomek describes the idea,

The idea of the muscleskinsuit came to our minds as a natural continuation of our passion for cycling and graphic design. Our own MTB racing experiences led us to create this original sports apparel. Firstly for private use. Then motivated by the growing interest of fellow bikers we decided to work some more on this project. Our goal was to share the effects of our work and to make the suit available to a wider range of cyclists from around the world. We established cooperation with best Polish sportswear manufacturers and later completed the collection with the long version of the suit, the arm and the leg warmers. We are planning to extend our offer in the near future.

Jack White Releases Record Project Created from Old X-Rays

Flexi disc x-ray records

Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes teamed up with Jack White’s boutique record label, Third Man Records to release the Gibby Haynes Blue Series 7″ Single released today, Valentine’s Day, 2013.  The single is a extremely special as it is pressed on old medical x-rays, called flexi discs or Roentgenizdat records. Pressing records on x-rays emerged in the Soviet Union after World War II as a way to distribute jazz and punk rock music when Stalin tried to remove every aspect of American culture. X-rays were a cheap and reliable material in the Soviet-era for creating records and they came ready with interesting images.  Apparently it was the idea of a jazz-loving medical student who realized that he could etch grooves into the x-rays to produce low quality recordings.

Fascinating!

The x-ray record will also be available at The Rolling Record Store in Austin, TX during this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival.
