The Walking Dead Scoop: Rick’s Journey, Andrea’s Choice and More!

The Walking Dead opened PaleyFest 2103 last night with an in-depth panel discussion that featured all our favorite cast members.

From Rick's craziness to The Governor's dark side, various stars and crew member spoke on various Season 3 topics. We run them down below...

Rick Grimes Image

Andrew Lincoln on Rick's dark journey: "The characters are always growing. One of the big attractions when I first spoke to Frank [Darabont] about [the role] was that: You start in one place and end somewhere else. The journey this season has been incredible. To push one of the central characters off the cliff's edge like that is really bold. But I'm running out of mad gags. I hope [Rick] comes back from the brink soon."

Norman Reedus on the clashing siblings: "The Dixon brothers fight because they have to fight. Their backs are against the wall. There's a sensitive side to Merle and you'll see it in an upcoming episode, it's really great.'

Laurie Holden on Andrea's view of The Governor: "When she goes back and sleeps with him again it's not because she's having a weak female moment and thinks he's handsome. She thought she could follow through with Carol's plan. Andrea thought she could do it and tried to do it.

"I think sleeping with him disgusted her. Then she woke up and it's one thing to kill someone in self defense but it's another to stand over with them a knife while they're sleeping. She couldn't do it. You could call that weak or you could call that strong. But Andrea has never killed anyone before. She wants to find the humanity in both these men."

Producer David Alpert on The Governor: Is he pure evil? "I don't think any one character can be summed up that way.  All the characters have elements of good and bad and evil in them. The Governor and Rick are both facing the same problems. They're both leaders, both trying to keep their communities alive. Right now the Governor is actually doing a better job at that. There's a part of him that's good. He wants to be that father figure. But the darkness has allowed him to grow and prosper."

Producer Robert Kirkman the future for Carl: "Carl is one of my favorite aspects of the comic and the show. [We] watch him grow and evolve from this kid who's almost a burden to a child soldier. Where we're gonna go with this kid is some pretty exciting places. This season is really just the beginning of his journey."

The Walking Dead Season 3 resumes tomorrow night with a new episode on AMC. Visit TV Fanatic the moment it concludes for a detailed recap and review.

Justified Round Table: "Outlaw"

Rest in peace, Arlo.

Justified Season 4 aired a major episode on Tuesday, as "Outlaw" ended the life of one major character, while offering up hopeful life chances for another.

In this edition of the TV Fanatic Round Table, staff members Dan Forcella, Nick McHatton, Jim Garner and Carla Day gather around to discuss the death of Arlo, the identity of Drew Thompson and a lot more...

----------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from this episode?
Dan: Had to be Raylan's second shootout in as many eps, but it was less about the actual fight and more about Boyd telling Raylan that he was still invited to the wedding.

Nick: I'm in agreement with Dan on this one; plus, I loved when Raylan stopped the tension midway by commenting on Ava's engagement ring.

Christine: I loved Boyd out of nowhere asking for a Dairy Queen and then Ava's quip that she'd love a Peanut Buster Parfait. After such a tense scene I couldn't stop laughing.

Jim: I'm with the guys. Raylan's "Jesus, I hope I got that right" after shooting the deputy several times made me laugh hard.

Carla: Definitely "I hope I got that right." Followed by Boyd's request for a Dairy Queen.

Justified RT Logo

Should Raylan take more than two days off to mourn Arlo?
Dan: No. Kiss. My. Ass.

Nick: The most we're getting is Raylan's small moment before the elevator. Arlo isn't a man who deserves to be mourned, especially not by his son.

Christine: For most people I'd say yes - but Raylan will probably find more trouble during his time off. He's safer and saner if he just keeps working the case.

Jim: Raylan should take a couple of days off, not to mourn Arlo's death, but to find closure on what a horrible father he was. Arlo really can't hurt Raylan any more and that deserves some processing.

Carla: Absolutely not. Raylan without the job is a Raylan getting in trouble. He's better when he has a focus. Though, it would be nice for him to check up on Winona during these days. He may have had a crappy father, but he can use that to be better for his own child.

We are close to learning who Drew is. Any speculations at this point?
Dan: Yes, Shelby.  As I said in my review from "Outlaw," I want it to be someone we already know, and I think he's our only solid option. His interest in the widow put him over the top as number-one candidate.

Nick: I really have no idea.

Christine: Things certainly seem to be pointing to Shelby. He was asking a lot of questions about the widow. He had a wife who left him under mysterious circumstances. We know next to nothing about his past but what a great way to stay hidden: become the Sheriff and have all the information you need to stay hidden.

Jim: I think Dan has it. Between Shelby's interest in the ex-wife and his comment to Ellen May about "Pretend long enough, it ain't pretend no more" makes me think we've been seeing Drew this whole time.

Carla: Shelby seems like the obvious choice at this point, but if he had that much money why didn't he run instead of going to prison? If it's not him, I have no idea other than possibly one of the men that Boyd screwed over.

Who will confront Colton first: Johnny or Tim?
Dan: I don't think Johnny will confront him. I think Cousin Johnny is more likely to go running to Cousin Boyd to tell him everything that has been going on. That way he can let Boyd confront Colton.  Cousin Johnny doesn't have the stones to go up to Colt's face. Didn't you see him sneaking around with that cell phone?

Nick: Tim for sure. Johnny is more of an information man than a confrontation man.

Christine: Definitely not Johnny. As the boys have already said, he's a coward at heart. He'll happily let Boyd take care of this mess.

Jim: I think Colton is screwed either way, but I'm giving Tim the odds of avenging his friend. Tim's nature is not one to let something go.

Carla: Johnny is too scared of Colton to directly confront him. I think he'll remain behind the scenes trying to freak Colton out. Tim will at least question him about the killings.

Pen a eulogy for Arlo.
Dan: You sir, were the worst father a cowboy could ask for. Kiss. My. Ass.

Nick: Arlo is an ass. Arlo now lies below grass.

Christine: A shiv in the chest. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy or a lousier father. I hope you stocked up on sunblock for your trip. You're going to need it.

Jim: Here lies Arlo in the dirt and muck/For many this would just suck/But not for Arlo who was a stupid... ass.

Carla: He's not worth a eulogy, just stick him in the ground.

Nikita Review: Protecting the Innocent

After over 20 years of spying, conspiring and sleeping with each other, Amanda turned on Ari over a single failed mission.

Now, she only has one thing left to live for and that's to cause Nikita as much pain as possible. Amanda's days on earth are finally coming to an end. Nikita may have spared her former teacher's life before, but Amanda destroyed any hope for a long life after she decided to kill innocents.

"With Fire" presented Division with one of the greatest acts of terror the country could face with random acts of violence: a grenade in an elevator, a mass shooting at a farmer's stand, and the shooting of a family outside their home. With no pattern and no geographical restraints, the Crimson Resistance spread terror across the nation and all with weapons Amanda procured through Division contacts.

Ari's Demands

Even though Amanda was behind the violence, it wasn't a matter of Nikita versus Amanda. It was about Division saving innocent lives, which is why it wasn't surprising that Nikita would resort to violence to get Ari to talk. What was surprising was how long Ari held out without giving over the information; that was until his true motivation came out.

Ari sought out Division, held strong to his demand for money, withstood the painful beating all for the love of his son. Even though Nikita has no children of her own, the motivation of love was something that she understood. Ari never expected to get out. He wanted the money to keep his son safe and once he realized that there was no money, he gave up the information trusting Nikita to protect his son.

Ari's intel ended up not being all that helpful, since Alex's idea of tracking the mobile phone encryption worked. Birkhoff was able to hack the signal and Alex prevent the third attack before it started. Amanda proved that she was resourceful at setting up elaborate plans when she framed Sean for killing Kendrick and this time she wanted to frame Division for the terrorist attacks. With the terrorist's face and execution shown on the video transmission, there was no one to refute the evidence that she left implicating Division.

Wow. Imagine what Amanda could have done with her brilliant mind if she used it to better the world, rather than break people's minds, kill, and destroy. Amanda's resources and contacts have to be withering as word gets out about her nefarious ways. It shouldn't be long before Nikita and Division catch up with her. Will they take her dead or alive? Nikita seems ready to put a bullet in her head, but will Owen's lost memories alter that plan?

As much as, Owen deserves to know the truth, bringing Amanda in isn't the answer. She would use the opportunity to further her own agenda and perhaps hurt Owen even more. For the greater good, Amanda needs to be removed either with a bullet or put in a cell and forgotten. It looks like the final showdown will be over Ari's son.

Division won this round against Amanda, but it wasn't without the loss of lives.

This new Division has at its core a strong group of operatives, analysts, and computer geniuses, but really they are a family. Recently, they brought in some new family members, including Owen and Sean which has created a disturbance. Sean never wanted to be part of Division and tried unsuccessfully to get Alex to leave. Due to Amanda's actions, Sean was forced to give up his own family, friends and to live forever a new secret life.

At least he has Alex. Or, does he? Ever since Alex and Owen have been partnered together, they have bonded. They both lived through the horrors of Division and understand each other in a way that few others could. Sean would press Alex for answers, while Owen just talked with her. It had to be excruciatingly painful for Sean to hear Alex share the story of her butterfly tattoo with Owen, especially since he is unaware of Alex's previous conversations with Owen.

Sean's isolated and if he feels like he is losing Alex too, he'll be unpredictable which could be problematic for Division. Though, you have to wonder if Owen pushed the conversation with Alex because he knew Sean was still on the line. Either way, trouble is coming for this potential love triangle.

On a happier note, Michael asked Nikita to set and keep a date for them to be married and she agreed. Yay! Though, the blood left on the map probably means that the wedding will be delayed, if not, indefinitely postponed.

How will Amanda's story end? Will Nikita kill her? Will she be taken dead or alive? Should Alex be in a relationship with Sean or Owen? Did Owen purposefully have the butterfly conversation because he knew it would upset Sean?

Pretty Little Liars Round Table: "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"

Pretty Little Liars reviewer Teresa Lopez thought the show went off the deep end this week in "Out of Sight, Out of Mind." Did you agree?

Join her and fellow staffers Christina Tran, Nick McHatton, Leigh Raines and Carissa Pavlica as they ponder the deficiencies of the Rosewood police department, Aria's foray into motherhood and whether or not the Liars' parents could ever be prepared to take on the A-team...

----------------------------------------

Will Aria climb on board as a mother?
Teresa: I doubt it. She seems really uncomfortable with the level of responsibility involved, which makes sense because she's a teenager.

Christina: I don't think so, and who could blame her? At times, it almost felt like Ezra was babysitting both Malcolm and Aria.

Nick: I think she'll give it a try, but it's going to difficult. I mentioned in the "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" Round Table that Ezra is going to begin looking at Aria differently now that he's with his little boy, but I didn't expect Aria to look at their relationship differently. So, while Aria might be on board for now, I'm thinking she'll jump in a life boat and head for shore, and I really can't blame her.

Leigh: I think Aria will definitely want to try. She always wants to put the effort in. But she's quickly going to realize that she's nobody's stepmother, she's just a teenager. Babysitting is one thing, being part of that family dynamic is another.

Carissa: I'm with Nick on this one. Watching the Twitter feed, Ezria doesn't seem to have the magical effect it did a year ago. Maybe Wesley has had more of an impact on viewers than we've noticed and the writers are willing to test the waters by breaking up the beloved couple. Aria seems scared, and even A hasn't put her in that position. Having a baby at 17 is one thing, inheriting an older child at that age is otherworldly. I wouldn't blame her for rethinking things at all.

PLL RT LOGO

Who is dead - and did we lose more than one this time?
Teresa: I don't think it's Toby's body, but my money's on Wilden. I think Jason was a little shorter than Toby, but who knows? Maybe it's CeCe.

Christina: I wanted to think it was Toby's, but this is PLL. That would be far too easy. I'm leaning more towards it being Wilden's body.

Nick: I don't want it to be Toby's body, and it wouldn't surprise me if the body Spencer found was Wilden's. The helmet disguising his face is a nice touch, too.

Leigh: For starters, Toby is definitely ALIVE. Wilden is probably at A's new layer recuperating and hanging with Toby. That body was probably someone who Mona PAID (remember that wad of cash?) to replicate Toby's tattoo and play dead. Notice Spencer never had time to pull the helmet off before going after Mona.

Carissa: Toby is alive. Of that I have no doubt. But why do I think Wilden is just too easy? Ridiculously easy? I'd really like Teresa's suggestion that it was CeCe. Now THAT would be a sur

How can Spencer be a Jane Doe after being arrested so many times? Did someone erase her fingerprints? Is she not in Radley for Wren to save her? Multi-faceted Round Table question, but this is confusing.
Teresa: The fact that Spencer went directly to Radley was just over-the-top ridiculous to me. Remind me never to go to Rosewood since they don't really try to identify you before they shuffle you off to a mental institution. I wonder how Mama Hastings will react to the news that her daughter was institutionalized.

Christina: Talk about over-the-top! Truly, anything can happen in Rosewood. Lately, it seems like the A Team's plans are coming together rather smoothly. When are the PLL's going to strike back?!

Nick: I want to believe that Spencer's meltdown is all part of her super awesome plan we don't know about. I hope she's enlisted Emily to do some erasing at the police station, and she's using Wren for information on Mona.

Leigh: Easy. Rosewood PD is moronic. They probably just called her a Jane Doe because she had no ID on her and couldn't speak when she was found.

Carissa: Nick's idea is a super awesome plan....I wonder if the writers thought of it. Because I sure as hell didn't, and I wish I had! That's what I want. It would make the most sense for Wren, the police department and everyone else. Rosewood cannot be run by morons. (But it is, isn't it? Oh no...)

Poor Ashley. Could the parents ever be prepared to deal with the likes of A and her minions?
Teresa: I'll bet the parents would be better suited to deal with A since their first instincts are usually right...like calling your lawyer. But instead Ashley follows the teenagers and continues to give the A-team power over her and her secrets.

Christina: I used to think... if only the parents knew. However, Ashley chose to listen to her teenager daughter! Crazy. BTW, is it safe to say that Ashley has a sixth sense? That's the second (possibly) dead person she's seen.

Nick: I'm with Leigh, Ashley wouldn't go down without a fight. I also think Aria's Mom would be a dirty fighter if she needs to be.

Leigh: If any of the parents could handle it, it would be Ashley Marin. She ran over Wilden! Ashley will go down fighting.

Carissa: None of them have managed to come through yet. Those of you seated at my side have a lot more faith in the adults in Rosewood than I do. The adults seem to be at the top of the A-team manipulation list, and when they get called on it, the crumble. Even Dr. Sullivan, who is supposed to be a people expert, couldn't escape it. How are the Liars supposed to come out alive in the end? Sheesh.

Hot or Not: Workshop dude where Emily thought she was to meet Toby?
Teresa: Eh...in comparison with some of the other male characters, he was okay.

Christina: Not! Where's Caleb?!

Nick: I was too busy being weirded out by him. I'm still waiting for my Noel Kahn PLL...

Leigh: Option 3, totally creepy! He was paid off too. Where does Mona get all this money? Seriously?

Carissa: Y'all need to pay closer attention. Dude was hot. Who cares if he was creepy if he was hot? Damn.

Cao Hui Anatomical classic sculptures (5)

You may know Beijing-based artist Cao Hui‘s work without realizing it. He’s done those disgustingly disturbing flesh arm chairs, sofas, clothing, and suitcases. His latest series gives us a medically sliced view of classic sculptures a la Visible Human Project.

Cao has an interesting viewpoint on the increasing quest of artists to look inward rather than visually stay on the surface. He states,

Increasingly uneasy and dissatisfied with merely describing surface appearances, artists now attempt to plumb the inner reaches of things; an agenda that apparently moves into science or other fields. It seems artists are no longer happy just being artists, but are driven by their inborn love of performance to try out new roles, such as philosopher, scientist, doctor or perhaps even engineer. I think artists really want to play god more than anything else, and will stop at nothing to construct a truth that validates the self.

Jim’s Notebook: Open to PLL, Dallas and More!

Last week, I emptied my notebook from Miami. But now I’m a little further West in Dallas, where I spent yesterday at the legendary Southfork Ranch where the cast of Dallas is busy shooting Season 2.

I’ve also got more scoop from Pretty Little Liars’ Janel Parrish, along with intel on USA’s upcoming summer series Graceland.

NOTE: I’m rushing back to Los Angeles today for the start of the 30th annual PaleyFest in Los Angeles. The first night is a big one with a panel with the cast from The Walking Dead. Go to http://PaleyCenter.Org for more details on the schedule and tickets.

Jim's Notebook

DALLAS One of the show’s newer cast members, Emma Bell - who plays Emma Brown, the daughter of Ann (Brenda Strong) and Harris Ryland (Mitch Pileggi) - took time between shooting scenes yesterday to fill me in on where Emma’s relationship with her newly found mother is going now that we’ve seen the first signs that Emma may need her Mama after all.

“The greatest thing about their relationship,” Bell explained at Southfork, “is that it’s very true to form of a mother/daughter relationship. It’s incredibly complicated and at times very beautiful, at times very painful. It’s a learning experience for both of these women. You’ll see them come together in a way that they never have before but it’s beautiful and painful at the same time.”

But don’t expect Daddy Harris to be happy that his daughter is bonding with his mother. Bell said that Emma is “being pulled in both directions. I don’t know that she’s incredibly clear at the moment which direction she’ll ultimately choose because it’s become a choice.”

I’ll have more from my Dallas interviews with the cast very soon - and that includes lots of talk about the upcoming death and funeral of JR Ewing.

jim on setjim on dallas

GRACELAND The new Jeff Eastin drama for USA is currently shooting in Miami, but star Daniel Sunjata explained on the set last week that there was something new in this character that attracted him to it: “I haven’t had a ton of opportunities in my career so far on camera to play characters that have multiple levels going on at the same time, characters with this type of complexity and texture to them. As soon as I saw the writing and, of course, it’s Jeff Eastin so I knew the history of White Collar and I knew he was a great storyteller and it was a no-brainer. There was no reason not to take the job. Definitely a great character.”

Sunjata also said that co-star Aaron Tveit was cast first on the show and “he was there at my test so I actually auditioned with Aaron in the room. I’m sure they wanted to make sure the chemistry between whoever they cast as Briggs - thank God it was me - and Aaron was going to be on point and I think they saw that in the audition.”

Watch for Graceland this summer on USA!

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS The best TV villains are those that we love to hate... and one of the best has got to be Mona Vanderwaal. As played by Janel Parrish, I asked the actress if she hears from fans who actually are rooting for Mona to take down Spencer, Hanna, Emily and Aria.

“I get a lot of ‘I love to hate you’ or ‘I love hating you.’ But, yeah, there are probably some people who, even if they never admit it, say, ‘Go, Mona!’ Mona is after revenge and I think some people enjoy seeing her get it but I love it. That’s the best compliment I can get that I create a villain that people enjoy watching and people enjoy hating. It becomes a guilty pleasure and I like that.”

Expect Mona to up the ante even more with the last few episodes before the March 19th season finale.

That’s a wrap for this week! Anything else you’re dying to know about your favorite show? Leave a comment here or you email me directly at jim@jimhalterman.com. And remember: follow @TVFanatic for all your TV scoop!

"Memento Mori," beginning of the 17th Century, unknown artist from the Reno region, marble paste. As seen at the wonderful Capodomonte Museum, Naples, Italy.

Caption on website reads:

Memento Mori

As far as its size and appearance are concerned, this unusual object bears similarity to the many ivory objects in production at that time. It shows the partly decomposed body of a woman, and is a crude allegory of death and of the transient nature of human life. It follows an iconographic tradition which appeared in the Fifteenth Century and which was consolidated during the course of the Sixteenth Century, above all in French Flemish and Germanic areas

Carcere Penitenziati Museum, Palermo: Italy Trip Guest Post by Evan Michelson, TV’s "Oddities" and Morbid Anatomy Library

Below you will find the first of a series of guest posts by Evan Michelson--star of TV's "Oddities" and Morbid Anatomy Library scholar in residence--which will haphazardly document our three-week trip through Italy collecting images and information for our book-in-progress exploring the history of the preservation and display of the human body in Italy.
In this post, Evan shares her thoughts on a macabre relic of Palermo's history under Spanish rule: the Carcere Penitenziati Museum, a former Inquisition prison and torture site turned museum. The visual highlight of this museum was the charming, Catholic-imagery-heavy, Darger-esqye graffiti covering the walls of many of the prisoners' cells (see above) which was, our guide suggested, perhaps less a reflection of ardent faith than a means to impress the guards and increase the odds that they would be judged innocent of heresy.
Following is Evan's thoughts on our visit:

These delicate and fascinating images are scratched onto the walls of individual cells in the Carcere Penitenziati prison here in Palermo - a place of imprisonment used by the Inquisition. Many of these images were created in the 17th century by unlucky souls confined here for being heretics, Jews, reformers and various other non-believers; these inmates decorated the walls while awaiting violent "conversion" by torture (if death did not take them first).

Apparently the prison guards allowed (or even encouraged) the inmates to create these pictures, which were produced by using wet bricks as a kind of chalk. The prisoners were thus able to express their hopes and fears while awaiting the unspeakable tortures that took place in a small room just a few feet down the corridor (close enough, perhaps, for the future "penitents" to hear the screams).

Our thoughtful guide helped us unravel the meaning of some of these images: first we see the Inquisition personified as a crescent-shaped monster (a theme repeated elsewhere; top image), swallowing up traditional Biblical characters (this piece is quite large and flows from one wall to another). Next there is Christ's passion, but the figures surrounding him are of Spanish (rather than Roman; second image down) origin, perhaps illustrating the fact that this particular "penitent" came from Spain; he is paying witness to his own personal journey to Golgotha. The third image down depicts the host and the chalice - a scene of transubstantiation. Although these are by turns crude and surprisingly accomplished, many of them have a whimsical quality that belies the horrifying conditions under which they were created.

There is beautiful writing all over these walls (some in English); many of the texts are prayers, but there are also heart wrenching autobiographical passages. This place of great suffering and death is serene and beautifully preserved in a new museum that has only been open for two years. Until somewhat recently these rooms were government offices, and a few of the cells had been bureaucratically whitewashed ("criminal!" chimed our guide). Our informed (and passionate) docent later lamented the lack of ordinary hours and access to many of Italy's lesser-known cultural treasures, but this quiet, low-key and out-of-the-way little museum is a thoughtful addition to the grander, shinier cultural attractions.

Daydream Anatomy – Endless Sand Loop – Video

Daydream Anatomy - Endless Sand Loop
Endless sand loop, I remastered an old egyptian sounding some, someone said they needed an arabian sounding thing, and I remembered I #39;d made an old (badly mixed song) And this is what happened when I tried to fix it up. It #39;s better, but I didn #39;t have the best thing to build off of production wise, it was a mess. It really doesn #39;t look seamlessly though. Let me know what you think
