Happy Endings Review: Penny Made a Boo-Boo

Penny’s attempts at trying to move on past Pete land her in the arms of the car czar in “The Ballad of Lon Saforsky.

The czar is just about the last man on Earth anyone would want to have sex with, and so naturally poor choices Penny ends up unable to quit him; much like Brad can’t stop inviting people over when he’s in an awkward or uncomfortable situation.

The Coupon Challenge

Penny’s desire to find a hookup to get Pete out of her system is perfectly fine, but it become old pretty quickly as I watched Penny continually jump into bed with the Czar. If Jane hadn’t done some smoothing over he may have never left her. Which is the biggest gripe I had: Penny makes a big decision to break of the engagement with Pete – showing a lot of courage and backbone on her part – and then she winds up stuck in another relationship with very little courage or backbone.

Max’s decision to enter the best gay man pageant isn’t the first one Max has entered, but the tricks and antics between Max, Alex, and Dave make it enjoyable. Dave’s impersonation of Sonny and Cher is both genius and slightly creepy, and Alex attempting to school Max in throwing just the right amount of shade also got me.

"Un-sabotagable" is the stronger comedy of the hour, however, with Mark Paul Gosselaar making a quick cameo as one of Max’s very upset ex-boyfriends.

Eliza Coupe has proven to be versatile with Jane’s neuroses, and is able to keep them fresh and interesting even when they’re bordering on overused. Jane’s attempts to make over Max, her pull down diagrams for areas of improvement, and learning that Max’s life is so terrible that not even his ex wants to attempt to sabotage are hilarious.

Jane using her powers for good and making over Max is a great start to sabotage-ability, and I really enjoy seeing put together Max once in a while, but we all knew it was never going to last. Max is the type of guy who is going to use his front door for a headboard and find gum in his hair.

Dave’s attempts at sabotaging Alex’s groupons are mostly a reflection of him being just as crazy and impulsive as Alex, but in different areas. Dave talks a big game, but he’s sometimes just a carbon copy of Alex with a better vocabulary.  Chase’s subsequent monologue of doom for Max at the closing of the episode is rather amazing – no, not the monologue itself – but the reaction it brings out in the rest of everyone else. They couldn’t care less about what Chase said only his perfect timing.

Two and a Half Men: Renewed For Season 11!

CBS is officially bringing back Two and a Half Men for an 11th season this fall.

Stars Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer have closed one-year deals to return, while the half-man, Angus T. Jones, will come back part-time. It will be Ashton's third season after replacing Charlie.

Jones' future had been in question, and not just because he is an actual man now (they should change the title to 3 Men). He famously called the series "filth" and said he wanted out last year.

Alan & Walden At Home

"We'd like him to be part of it next year. He'd like it to be. [Creator] Chuck [Lorre] would too. He's made a public apology, we've moved on," CBS president Nina Tassler told reporters.

Guess he will be, at least if his schedule permits. According to reports, it is "likely" the 19-year-old will choose to go to college after this season, but recur on Men when available.

Excited for an 11th year of Two and a Half Men quotes? Comment below!

Doctor Who Review: So that’s Who…

We were treated to another super fun episode of Doctor Who in "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS" and got to see, no surprise here, the center of the TARDIS.

It seems like Clara's arrival the TARDIS itself has become much more of a character than a vessel. Yes, I know it's always had a life of its own and been responsible for a great many things, but we've learned an awful lot about it in fairly short period of time.

I had no idea it held a book on board entitled "The History of the Time War" that referenced The Doctor's name. It would seem others would have found it by now. More on that below.

Trying to Save the TARDIS

The salvage brothers were kind of a pointless device to give someone for The Doctor to run around with so he didn't have to talk to himself, but other than that, I really enjoyed with the premise. To think of marauders coming on board to steal parts of the TARDIS is almost ludicrous.

It was also pretty cool that the ship was even willing to turn against The Doctor to protect itself if he wasn't able to contain the guys himself. For as much as he does to protect the TARDIS, the TARDIS has to look out for itself first. I can understand and respect that.

I knew the monsters were going to turn out to be someone or something that was known to Clara, had no idea one of them was Clara. Honestly, that was a pretty cool twist.

Was I the only one who expected her to reach out to herself and try to make some sort of connection? Clara is so inquisitive and wants to help everyone and everything - it shocked me The Doctor was able to keep her from helping herself.

The Eye of Harmony, an exploding star in the act of becoming a black hole - just your basic bit of time lord engineering - was just one of the many other groovy things on the TARDIS that I didn't know about. The seemingly never ending swimming pool, the rocket; it made sense that The Doctor thought bringing Clara to the TARDIS would keep her safe.

Even in the face of so many dangers, the TARDIS has everything. When she realized she was the crispy creature chasing herself, and asked what he meant about bringing there to save her but she died again, I thought - oh no - we're getting into the she's going to start dying a lot part. They've just kept it from us until now.

Thankfully, I was wrong! But, it was enough to tip the scales of The Doctor's noggin in the direction of finding out just who the hell Clara was. He asked her flat out, told her about their previous encounters and her deaths. She wasn't overly frightened like a normal girl would have been, but instead kind of intrigued.

That's when she admitted she knew his name from reading the book, and when I knew that his relief at her not knowing anything about what he was saying was a ruse. She will be somebody special and his expectation that she would know, that anyone would know but him, was just crazy. Whoever she is, she's known only to Doctor Who. The reveal will be amazing.

There has been so much in this short second half of Doctor Who Season 7 that I know the finale is going to be killer and full of mind blowing information. I'm excited to see how they incorporate more than one Doctor and companion, whether it will be through a time rift or parallel universes, but I don't care.

Who wouldn't want to be The Doctor's companion? Even if it meant dying and coming back to life every few decades, it just seems worth it for all the fun and adventure.

What did you think about the adventure inside the TARDIS and The Doctor's continued quest to discover who Clara really is? It's your turn - hit the comments!

Vegas Review: Walking Away a Winner

"Past Lives" brought about the reunion I'd been longing for coupled with a side story I didn't see coming but probably should have.

Savino Plays Dirty

I've always been impressed with Mia and tonight's episode was no exception.  Even when Harry showed up twitchy and nervous, demanding $20,000 in cash and waving a gun, Mia was all business.  The worse things got, the calmer Mia became. It's as though you could see the calculations going on in her mind as she tried to figure out what to do next.

As usual she and Jack made a great team.  They were both so calm, yet so in sync. Even being handcuffed didn't stop their banter in this Vegas quote

Jack: I guess a guy will do anything to get close to you.
Mia: Never a dull moment between us. | permalink

When Harry let Mia go and dragged Jack off I kept waiting for her to say something to him, but the look in her eyes said it all.  She was devastated. She truly believed he wasn't coming back and the horror of their situation left her silent.

In a way, that made their reunion all the better.  That kiss had been a long time coming.  I doubt the love story between the deputy and the mob boss' daughter will ever run smooth but it will certainly always be interesting.

The bright shine of Dixon and Yvonne's new relationship was tarnished with a dose of 1960s racist reality.  Until the moment they showed the Colored Only sign the difference in their skin color never even occurred to me. But in 1960 that was a huge obstacle. It's sad to think it may still be for some people in 2013.

But it was great to see Dixon man up for a girl worth having…

Dixon: There may be things I can't change but I'm not giving up. I know when something's worth fighting for. | permalink

These two make a really cute couple.  I hope we get to see more of them.

Katherine seems to have her share of suitors but I was disappointed she was still giving Agent Byrne the green light to try and woo her.  His tactics against the Savoy's employees were over the line and people with no ties to the mob or criminal activity were made to suffer for his fishing expedition. I was surprised Katherine let him off the hook so easily.

That said, Ralph really needs to do something besides snarl at Katherine whenever they disagree. If he's interested in more than a working relationship then it is past time to make that clear.

We didn't see a lot of Savino  but at least he found a way to take down Gainsley that didn't end with the arrogant rancher being buried in the desert…although something tells me that's still an option.

In the end, with my favorite Vegas couple reunited, I was happy to call the entire episode a win.

Blue Bloods Review: The Zombie Drug

The first thing that caught my attention in "Devil's Breath" was that Blue Bloods is actually filmed in New York City.  It makes the street sequences pop. No other city looks like New York.

He's Covered In Blood

I found it amusing that the zombie drug had the street name devil's breath.  As though zombie drug wasn't quite bad ass enough.

I felt for Carter.  He lost his girlfriend in one of the most horrific ways possible and will always question what really happened that night. The blanks in his memory will surely drive him crazy for years to come.

Did the two woman really need to kill his girlfriend when she found them robbing him?  I suppose that's a silly question.  Does anyone ever need to commit murder?  It just seemed like they could have made a run for it and if they'd laid low for a while, they might have gotten away with it.

Jamie's storyline was difficult to watch because it rung so true.  In trying to help a fellow Officer, Jamie ended up making matters much worse.

If Officer Grosso had not intervened and someone had gotten killed during that robbery I'm sure the press would have been all over him for not doing his job.  But since he'd had a couple of drinks when he drew his weapon he was still under fire even though everything had gone well.

I understood the reason for the rule.  We certainly don't want intoxicated police officers brandishing their weapons but terminating the man was an overreaction fueled by bad press.

Despite the backlash, it was good to see Frank hand down a more reasonable sentence.

I had to laugh at Erin's reaction to getting the phone call from Nicky's school in this Blue Bloods quote

Erin: I spent 12 years in Catholic school. There is no way the principal is calling me at 7:30 in the morning to request a meeting to tell me you're a straight A student. | permalink

It was fun to see Frank remind his daughter how she used to be the rebel and how the universe had blessed her with a daughter with similar traits.

Even better was Erin pointing out to Nicky that she seemed perfectly ready to enforce the rules when they applied to the police officer but was a rebel when the rules applied to her.

Once again, another great Friday night with the Reagans.

Grey’s Anatomy Promo: Unfaithful. Unfulfilled. Unbearable.

Unfaithful, Unfulfilled. Unbearable.

These three words flash prominently during ABC's promo for next week's Grey's Anatomy, "Do You Believe in Magic?" As we head down the home stretch of Grey's Anatomy Season 9, tensions are rising.

A new craniofacial specialist (Hilarie Burton) comes to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to work on a young patient, but it looks like she could have an impact on the staff far beyond practicing medicine.

Meanwhile, the doctors reach out to Bailey, who continues to shut everyone out, Owen fears for Ethan's future, and a magician's assistant is rushed into the ER after a magic trick goes terribly wrong.

Read our Grey's Anatomy review for our take on last night's "Sleeping Monster," then check out the teaser for next week's episode and share your predictions and comments with TV Fanatic:

The CW made a trio of major programming announcements this afternoon:

  1. It has ordered The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals to series.
  2. It has renewed Hart of Dixie for Season 3.
  3. And Beauty and the Beast for Season 2.

The Originals PosterHart of Dixie Valentine's Day CardCat's Unromantic Valentine's

These shows join Arrow, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, which were also renewed for the 2013-2014 season.

It's worth noting that these pick-ups do NOT mean all hope is lost for The Carrie Diaries and Nikita. But it should be diminished a bit.

Nikita Review: Return of Team Nikita

Ryan woke up from his coma to an entirely differently reality on Nikita.

In "Self Destruct," Alex set out to complete her mission of saving people in response to Sean's death. Meanwhile, at Division, Ryan came up with a plan to protect everyone, while sacrificing himself and destroying the institution. Even though, they always planned on shutting down Division, this definitely was not an ideal situation for them to be in.

Hiding the Devastation

Alex's journey post-South Ossetia has been tragic. Amanda really messed up Alex's mind and was responsible for the devastation at Division and ultimately Sean's death. Even though he tried to get through to Alex with his dying words, Alex was still under her Larissa-induced mind frame.

With nothing left at Division for her, she took off and tried to save more people. She was risking her life and everything to make a difference and fulfill the destiny that Amanda gave her. It only made sense that it would be Nikita that would bring the old Alex back. Even through their fights and differences, they have a bond unlike any other. Alex trusted Nikita enough to see through to the truth.

Despite Amanda's role in Alex's actions, it will take time for Alex to come to terms with what she was manipulated into doing. She made a strong start by agreeing to return to Division even though it meant facing Ryan again. His hesitation to trust her was understandable, but as Nikita said they needed all of them to succeed.

Ryan's decision to destroy Division and take the fall was noble, but unnecessary. It's something that Nikita would never allow her friend to do, as long as, there was any other option available. Ryan finally realized how close he came to falling into the Division trap. He grew to like the power of the institution and his role, but he didn't cross the line in any way that justified the sacrifice he was willing to make.

Nikita made a good point that their small group took out Percy without Division resources, while actually having to defeat them. Amanda doesn't have nearly the backing of Division and not even the decimated Division. They should be able to use the Black Box to track and destroy her. It will be sad to see the evil one taken out, but it's necessary for their protection and the security of the country.

The idea of the New Division was a good one, but it was built upon taken lives. Some of the ex-Division agents will certainly acclimate themselves back into the real world without problems, but others are bad people who will definitely go rogue. It's unfortunate, but true and they will need to be handled by someone.

Even though the New Division was a bust, Team Nikita remains strong. Perhaps a small knit group of black operatives is better suited to bringing in the Dirty Thirty and any other new rogue agents. Though, it's still unclear what, if anything, Amanda planted into Nikita's mind. Was Nikita's reflection on her suicide mission quest after Daniel's death prompted by something Amanda did to her? Or, just memories brought to the forefront by Alex's actions.

Either way, it's sure to be a wild ride to the end of Nikita season 3. They not only have to protect the secret of Division's implosion, but track down Amanda, Owen and the black box.
