Why Having Watched All 16 Seasons of Grey’s Anatomy Makes Me More of a Doctor Than Yale Pre-Meds – Yale Daily News

Dora Guo

Last week, I was nestled in the depths of Bass Library doing work, by which I mean eating Peanut M&Ms and figuring out which readings for the next mornings class I could get away with not doing. Around the corner, I heard a conversation between some students complaining about the workload for their chemistry class. I was a bit bothered by their volume but it wasnt until one of them said that the pre-med track is killer, I shouldve just settled with watching a little Greys Anatomy and done a different major that I became alarmed. Settled? For Greys Anatomy?

I realized at that moment that Yale pre-meds feelings of superiority over medical drama audiences had gone too far, so I instigated the following correspondence:

***

Dear Yale Pre-meds:

I feel comfortable calling myself a doctor. I know the steps to an appendectomy (or an appy, as doctors like me say), I know the proper locations for scalpel incision, I can find the aorta, I can insert a chest tube. Ive learned to work under pressure, to keep my hands steady and to stay standing for 10 hours straight. Im not just a doctor Im a good one.

I say this not because Im on the pre-med track like you all, but because Ive watched 16 seasons of Greys Anatomy, which I will argue is probably more important. I know you are all likely busy studying for your organic chemistry midterm, so Ill try to keep this brief.

Greys begins after each protagonist has completed medical school and is ready to start their surgical residency at Seattle Grace Hospital. Just through watching the first few seasons of the show, I was able to experience the internship (first year of residency) experience first-hand. I was there when George OMalley held a heart in a broken-down elevator, and when Meredith Grey held her hand in a mans chest so that a bomb wouldnt detonate typical residency things. I felt their all-nighters, their stress and their competition.

I hate to break it to you all and I know that this can be an uncomfortable conversation to have but you are all simply college students. You may have fantasies in your head about being chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Johns Hopkins, but your doctor life at this point consists of memorizing names of proteins and polyatomic ions in your bedroom as you watch that biochem lecture you didnt attend two weeks ago.

I know that youre learning a lot about the human body in your classes, but you havent been in the field like I have. Season 17 premieres on Nov. 12. Hop on, or risk falling behind.

Love,

Owen

***

Dear Owen,

We arent completely sure why you decided to write us a letter, and were even less sure as to why were responding to you. Not only do we consider you to be a threat should you ever be around someone in need of medical help (please call 911, Owen), but Greys Anatomy is also riddled with medical inaccuracies and exists almost purely as a drama, not a source of education. You have no clue how to perform an appendectomy.

On a more personal note, Greys is just not a good show. All the main characters are, quite frankly, annoying, and the plot arc gets repetitive. Find a better show, please.

With warm regards,

Yale Pre-meds

***

Hey fools!

I hope your orgo midterm went ok, although Im guessing it didnt, considering a happy person wouldnt write such a passive aggressive letter or is that just your pre-med personality? Anyway.

The Shonda Rhimes masterpiece that is Greys Anatomy has only lasted over 15 years because there is such a high demand for it if it wasnt popular, how could it be Americas longest-running medical drama? How could it rake in 39 Emmy nominations? So, lets unpack your distaste for the show; do you dislike it because its popular? Are you quirky, and adamant that the shows you watch be different than the mainstream? Im sorry you feel that way. Youre missing out.

Sure, some of the characters are annoying. But Cristina Yang youre going to insult Sandra Oh like that? Alex Karev may start the show off as a jerk, but over the course of 16 seasons he gradually grows into a sweet, empathetic division chief. Not sure about you all, but to me, that is an excellent plot arc.

In terms of me being a threat who are you to say that? Lets compare how we would each react to a dangerous situation. If the patient codes and requires CPR, you will do one of the following: recite a bunch of jargon and definitions you had to memorize for your chem final, email your professor for help or simply freeze. You havent experienced the time pressure required to react to these situations the way I have (as a reminder, Ive gone through Season 9, so I can handle it).

Is the show not always 100 percent accurate? Sure. But the average for all of your last bio exam was what, a 65? There are no curves in the real world, sweetheart. I can promise you that the show is far more accurate than you are.

Screw your warm regards.

Xoxo,

Owen

***

Dear Owen,

Nice to hear from you again. Your situation is no longer of interest to us.

Having binged a medical drama does not make you a doctor.

Have a wonderful day,

Yale Pre-meds

***

Hey nerds,

I appreciate your thoughtful reply, although it actually wasnt thoughtful at all. I have some reminders for you all before you enter the world of medicine, because Id hate for you to fuck it up:

Being a doctor requires the ability to build strong relationships with patients. As a Greys fan, Ive seen Meredith get to know her patients so well she could likely recite to me their whole life story, and Ive seen Alex create environments of rich mutual trust between him and the kids in the pediatrics wing. Ive spent years watching these friendships unfold, to the point that I know Id be able to cultivate similar ones. I am sympathetic and kind if I were your doctor, I would make you feel at home.

You all, on the other hand, are a different story. As a patient of the Yale pre-med email service, I do not feel at home. I feel rejected and I feel looked down upon. You have not proved yourselves as warm-hearted doctors. In the words of Chief Webber in Season 1, This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play? Thats up to you.

How are you going to play?

I realize there might be an inclination on your part to reach back out to me for advice I know you all want to be better doctors. But, despite my talent as a mentor, I cannot do that for you. To quote my favorite character on the show, Stephanie Edwards, Deal with your jealousy. Deal with your shortcomings. Dont put your crap on me.

With that, you are on your own.

Best of luck,

Owen

Human evolution picking up pace, resulting in additional artery in arm and no wisdom teeth – OregonLive

Humans are continuing to evolve -- in fact, theyre doing so at a faster rate than they have in at least 250 years.

Thats the conclusion of scientists in Australia who found that more and more people now have the median artery in their arms, and more people are now being born without wisdom teeth, among other findings.

The research was published last month in the Journal of Anatomy.

The once-rare median artery, long considered chiefly an embryonic structure, supplements the radial and ulnar arteries, increasing overall blood flow to the forearm and hand. Flinders University anatomy professor Teghan Lucas and University of Adelaide medical-sciences professors Maciej Henneberg and Jaliya Kumaratilake say their work shows that the median artery will be found in most humans by the end of the century.

In the video below, Lucas summarizes the research.

Since the 18th century, anatomists have been studying the prevalence of this artery in adults, and our study shows its clearly increasing, Lucas said in a statement via Flinders University in Adelaide. The prevalence was around 10% in people born in the mid-1880s compared to 30% in those born in the late 20th century, so thats a significant increase in a fairly short period of time, when it comes to evolution.

The Journal of Anatomy study states that people born 80 years from now will all carry a median artery if the trend continues. When the median artery prevalence reaches 50% or more, it should not be considered as a variant, but as a normal human structure.

A sketch shows the median artery. (Maciej Henneberg/YouTube)

The study also concludes that human faces are becoming shorter and jaws smaller, resulting in more people being born without wisdom teeth.

The research found other changes starting to occur in humans, including additional bones and bone connections in the legs and feet.

Lucas says such microevolution indicates that humans are evolving at a faster rate than at any point in the past 250 years.

Anatomy on the half shell: U of T alumnus draws on education to become champion oyster shucker – News@UofT

Most kinesiology graduates go on to have careers in exercise, health or education.Patrick McMurraywenton to open acclaimed sea food restaurants and break Guinness World Records for oyster shucking and credits his University of Toronto education, no less.

Born into a family of teachers, McMurray planned to become a teacher after completing his bachelors degree in physical health and education at U of T in 1993.

Yet, McMurray says his undergraduate education was quietly preparing him for a career in the food industry all along.

During my time at the university, I was the social director, organizing monthly pubs and social gatherings, and helping out with frosh weeks, he says. I was also working in restaurants as a server during that time to help pay for school.

McMurray started his own restaurant called Starfish in 2001 and six months later won the Canadian shucking championship a third time. Next, he was off to Ireland to compete in the world championship, taking his new blade and training regimen with him.

Going from a Canadian championship to a world championship is like switching from a sprint to a long distance race. says McMurray. You have to use a different approach.

The Canadian championship requires contestants to shuck 18 oysters. At the world championships, contestants have to shuck 30 Irish native oysters, which are a different species and are technically more difficult to open. McMurray used his university education to help him train. Leaning on the lessons he learned in his biomechanics and ergonomics classes, he designed an ergo-dynamic knife, which gave him a better grip and more leverage. He also developed a technique that would help him open the oysters more efficiently.

The difficulty of shucking an oyster comes from it being hard on the outside and soft on the inside, he explains. You have to sever the muscle that holds the two shells together and serve the oyster without cutting the meat, so the competitions are a combination of speed and dexterity.

You can save a lot of time by training your hands to do different things.

Murray came up with the idea ofserving his customers plates of 30 oysters for $35 while they timed him shucking oysters on a table the same height as the competition table. He went on to win the Galway World Championships that year, the first Canadian to accomplish the feat. When he returned home to Canada, he was invited on Christine Cushings show on Food TV.

I thought Id make an attempt at the Guinness world record, set at 27 oysters in one minute, a perfect time frame for TV, McMurray says. I brought 40 Oysters, opened 33 in 60 seconds, and after sending in the video and letters, was awarded my first Guinness world record.

Ever since, McMurray has received calls from around the world asking him to attempt tobreak his own record which he did in 2007 inBeijing, where he shucked 38 oysters per minute. Then, in2017, he went head to head with Gordon Ramsay on The F-Word Live show, setting the new record of 39 oysters per minute. His Guinness world record now stands at 1,114 oysters in one hour.

Oysters have taken McMurray around the world, across Canada and throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Travelling around the globe has shown me that oyster culture is found wherever ocean touches land, McMurray says.

In 2007, he published his first book on oysters, calledConsider the Oyster:a Shuckers Field Guide, in which he wrote about the global nature of oysters and created the oyster tasting wheel. In 2018, he published a second edition calledThe Oyster Companion, which includes recipes and more stories.

Oysters are a rare food that can take you back to an exact location and memory, he says. Thats because when the muscle closes, it captures sea water that it uses as its lifeblood. That little drop of ocean water has the flavour of the region its been plucked from, so I can open up an oyster from Ireland here in Toronto and smell the sea breeze in western Ireland.

Thats why I always tell people to first smell the oyster, then chew it.

McMurray is often invited to speak at special events, judge shucking contests and make TV appearances, most memorably on Martha Stewarts TV show, where he showed her, Snoop Dogg and Wanda Sykes how to shuck oysters and spoke about oyster etiquette, such as choosing the right sauce.

If you look at Tabasco sauce, thats great for someone from Louisiana, but if youre in Paris, why are you using a Louisiana sauce on a Parisian order of French oysters? Regional sauces would be more appropriate, he says. On the other hand, the Olympia oyster should be eaten without sauce. Its the size of a loonie and it takes five years to grow it and it virtually melts on the palette. Its so small, but its the most complex of all oysters.

When hes not teaching celebrities about oysters, McMurray teaches a culinary and hospitality class at Centennial College, having finally come full circle from his days at U of T when he planned to become a teacher.

When I teach my class about oysters, I talk about the different species, the anatomy of the oyster and how to open it. I learned all about muscles in my anatomy class at U of T, he says.

He saysthere is no better food source for protein than oysters. Theyre low on fat, contain Omega 3 and Omega 6, zinc, selenium and vitamin D. And, he says, they are among the most sustainable foods to grow, with the ocean doing most of the work.

Eat an oyster, save an ocean, says McMurray. Theyre good for you and the environment.

His words of advice for new students starting their education in the most unusual of times? Enjoy it.

You never know where you will end up, but know that youll always be able to use what youre learning and apply it perhaps in different ways than originally intended, says McMurray. And, follow your passion. My passion turned out to be food, but I used so much of what I learned in school about nutrition, anatomy and biomechanics in my career.

Does Computerized CT-based 3D Planning Of The Humeral Head Cut Help To Restore The Anatomy Of The Proximal Humerus After Stemless Total Shoulder…

Background:Restoration of proximal humeral anatomy (RPHA) after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been shown to result in better clinical outcomes than is the case in non-anatomical humeral reconstruction. Preoperative virtual planning has mainly focused on glenoid component placement. Such planning also has the potential to improve anatomical positioning of the humeral head by more accurately guiding of the humeral head cut, and selection of anatomical humeral component sizing. Hypothesis of the study: The use of preoperative 3D planning helps to reliably achieve RPHA after stemless TSA.

Methods:One hundred consecutive stemless TSA (67 males, 51 right shoulder, mean age of 62 9.4 years) were radiographically assessed using pre- and postoperative standardized AP radiographs. The RPHA was measured with the so-called circle method described by Youderian et al. We measured deviation from the premorbid center of rotation (COR), and more than 3mm was considered as minimal clinical important difference. Additionally, pre- and postoperative humeral head diameter (HHD), head neck angle (HNA) and humeral head height (HHH) were measured to assess additional geometrical risk factors for poor RPHA.

Results:The mean distance from of the premorbid to the implanted head COR was 4.3mm 3.1mm. Thirty five shoulders (35%) showed a deviation of less than 3mm (mean 1.9, 1.1) and 65 shoulders (65%) a deviation of 3mm (mean 8.0 3.7). Overstuffing was the main reason for poor RPHA (88%). The level of the humeral head cut was responsible for overstuffing in the 46 of the 57 overstuffed cases. The preoperative HHD, HHH and the HNA were significantly larger, higher and more in valgus angulation in the group with accurate compared to the group with poor RPHA (HHD of 61.1mm 4.4 vs 55.9 6.6, p<0.001; HHH 8.62.2 vs 7.62.6 p=0.026, varus angulation of 134.7 6.4 vs. 131.0 7.91, p=0.010).

Conclusion:Restoration of proximal humeral anatomy after stemless TSA using CT-based 3D planning was not precise. A poorly performed humeral head cut was the main reason for overstuffing which was seen in 88% of the cases with inaccurate RPHA. Preoperative small HHD, low HHH and varus angulated HNA are risk factors for poor RPHA after stemless TSA.

Clinical significance:While Preoperative CT-based 3-D planning gives insight into the proximal humeral anatomy, execution of this insight through visual based surgery without guides or navigation, does not appear to increase accuracy of RPHA.

Level of evidence:Level IV; Case Series; Treatment Study.

Keywords:CT based 3D planning of total shoulder arthroplasty; Humeral head cut; Humeral head implant size; Restoration of proximal humerus anatomy; Total shoulder arthroplasty; preoperative virtual planning.

How to Do It is Slates sex advice column.Have a question?Send it to Stoya and Rich here. Its anonymous!

Dear How to Do It,

Ive been with my guy for two years. While we have fantastic sex, one thing I love is missing: anal. Ive enjoyed anal sex in the past and want it with him, but he has an extraordinarily long, fat penis. Its something to behold. And Tab A just wont fit into Slot B. To get used to his size, Ive tried graduated training plugs but the largest is still smaller than his plug. Its worth noting that his length is not preventing penetrationhis girth is.

So, Im literally asking how to do it, anally. Thanks for your, um, input.

Not Just the Tip

Dear Not Just the Tip,

Inflatable butt plugs. Ive seen them starting at three inches in diameter before pumping and expansion. You may also be able to find thicker, uninflatable plugs. Try your local sex shopthey may be able to special order you something, too.

If fingers feel OK for you, theres always the duck bill stage of fisting. Ill explain: To fist, you go through a number of stages. At one point you have all four of your fingertips squished together with your fingers fairly flat and your thumb tucked in, and the hand looks like a ducks bill. On my hand, thats eight and a half inches circumference. On his, I image thats more. It might help dive into the fun and fabulous world of fistingjust use plenty of lube.

The same goes for the anal you crave: Take it slow and gradual, and keep things well lubed. Try breathing exercises to help you relax. Theres one I use where I breathe in for four seconds, hold my breath for seven, and exhale for eight. I do these four times, 76 seconds total. On the inhale, feel your breath going all the way through your chest, into your gut, and down into your pelvic floor. If you can do a Kegel clench during the breath hold, do that. You can try other breathing techniques as wellreally anything that encourages you to focus on your body and brings your awareness to relaxing the parts youd like.

Dear How to Do It,

Im a woman with a voice kink. It usually doesnt play a huge role in my sex or dating life, but when someone does have a really nice voice, I find it incredibly attractive. I recently entered into a sexual relationship with one of my friends who I had always thought had a lovely voice. Im incredibly attracted to himlike, I can orgasm JUST from him touching my arm during sexand that coupled with my voice kink has led to an interesting new sensitivity: His singing/humming voice makes me orgasm. Normally this would just be a fun little nugget of information that doesnt really affect any major part of our lives, but my friend is a member of our college chorus (and just a general idle hummer/singer of songs) and I would like to be able to see him perform. How do I stop myself from being so sensitive to his voice/him?

Audiophile

Dear Audiophile,

Have you attended a chorus performance and experienced inappropriate arousal? See, Im wondering if being in a public setting might prevent orgasm, and itd be simple for you to experiment.

Another thing you can experiment with is exposure. Sometimes new kinks or quirks have a unique sort of power that stems from novelty. We arent used to them yet, so were hypersensitive and reactive. If you get enough of this stimulation, it might lose some impact.

Otherwise, you might have to get creative with earplugs and settle for watchingbut not hearingthe performance.

Dear How to Do It,

Im a recovering porn and sex addict. Ive been married for 14 years. Most of that time, my wife has had the pain of what Ive done to her, including cheating and using her for sex in a way that was not healthy. We separated for a while, and in our healing, have been back together for a year. We are having a hard time reestablishing a sex life, and she has suffered a lot of trauma due to my past actions. She is finding it very difficult to relax and enjoy herself. She has started counseling, and I have listened to her feelings about what she is going through. It is very clear to both of us that we need to take a step back and slow down in our sex life. One issue that were not sure how to handle is she has a hard time communicating during sex. I want to give her a method to tell me that she is comfortable (or not) without having to ask her 1,000 questions, which also makes sex hard for her. The last thing I want is for her to freeze in the moment and me to think everything is fine. Do you have any communication techniques?

Tentative

Dear Tentative,

Communication can be so much more than verbal exchanges. I imagine that after 14 years of marriage you have some grasp of your wifes expressions, and can tell when shes connected and when shes checked out. Pay attention during sexual activityif you see your wife cease to be engaged, you can stop and check in.

You can also establish a safe word, or a short verbal cue that sexual interaction needs to stop. Theyre common in the BDSM community and can be useful in many situations. Stop, red, and no make great safe wordsreally, unless youre explicitly incorporating themes of nonconsent, you should always stop when you hear these words. A more extreme possibility is having her hold something small, with the agreement that youll stop if she drops it. Youll want the object to be heavy enough to notice when it hits the floor.

How is your wife with communicating after sex? Im wondering if you could discuss the sex youve just had at whatever level of detail shes comfortable with as a starting point. With practice, she might develop a stronger ability to communicate during sex, too.

Dear How to Do It,

I am a woman who, after 15 years of being sexually active, just learned how to squirt (!). Prior to this, I had only ever climaxed from clitoral stimulation, which sometimes takes a long time, particularly when Im with a partner. I LOVE this newfound method for comingit feels like a physical reaction to my arousal, whereas the clitoral method comes from more of a mental arousal for me. So now that I have the ability to become a geyser every day, I have a few questions for you, my favorite columnists.

1. I lose a lot of fluid so hydrating well seems key, but is there anything I should be aware of nutritionally?

2. Its so messy! Do you have any recommendations for managing this besides laying towels down and doing copious amounts of laundry after, or finishing in the shower?

3. It feels like Im really exercising my pelvic floor in a different way. My partner and I have talked about expanding our family in the next few years. This may be very wishful thinking, but has a persons ability to squirt been shown to have any impact on childbirthshorter/easier labor?

4. Is there anything else I should know? Any other insights would be very appreciated. Thank you so much!

Old Faithful

Dear Old Faithful,

I talked to Amir Marashi, a New Yorkbased gynecologist. He said he wouldnt worry about getting dehydrated or losing nutrition from squirting, but that whether you squirt or not, its a great idea to drink plenty of watergood advice for us all. On pelvic floors, Marashi told me, Exercising the pelvic floor muscles is very important and definitely helps you have an easier labor, and also after delivery, you will bounce back to your baseline much faster. But maybe unsurprisingly, it doesnt sound like squirting and labor length has been studied.

For managing the mess, you can also invest in a high-quality mattress protector or an absorbent throw like the ones Libidex makes. But towels are definitely a good way of managing the volume of liquidyou might keep a stack next to the bedand moving your activities to the bathroom is another fine tactic. You can also always choose not to orgasm every time if you dont want to deal with the mess.

Enjoy the fun new trick your vagina has learned! And remember, always carry a towel.

Stoya

Im a 35-year-old married mother of two small children, and Ive never had good sex. None of the men I was with when I was single in my 20s were interested in learning about the clitoris. Neither is my husband. I used to think that women who cheated were being ridiculous because the only thing Ive ever gotten out of sex is ego gratification. But recently Ive begun to think that this may not be all straight womens experience of sex, and maybe some straight women cheat because theyre having orgasms with their affair partner. I want that. My question is whether its worth it to try to have an affair. For me, sex has always been all risk and no reward. I have become deeply cynical in this area. But there is a little tiny sprig of hope that makes me wonder: What if some men are interested in the clitoris and understand how to operate it? What if I can have an orgasm with someone else before I die? That reward would be worth the risk.

Anatomy of a powerhouse: Expectations at Ohio State now go beyond the Big Ten and Rose Bowl – Buckeye Extra

Rob Oller| roller@dispatch.com

Editors note: How did Ohio State football become a Buckeye Nation of true believers? In a 14-part series, we explore aspects that shaped OSUs evolution from Saturday afternoon diversion to near-religious experience. Today: Chase

Not even two Heisman Trophies can bookend the regret that slides off the shelf of Archie Griffins most painful Pasadena memory, when undefeated Ohio State lost to underdog UCLA in the 1976 Rose Bowl, costing the Buckeyes a national championship.

Thats the one that haunts me, Griffin said, grimacing more from the recollection of that 23-10 loss than from the sore back that now hampers his golf game.

The Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and United Press International polls, had defeated the Bruins 41-20 in the Los Angeles Coliseum earlier in the season and entered the New Years Day game as two-touchdown favorites.

Yet despite coming up short again Griffin finished 1-3 in Rose Bowls, with two lost chances at national titles the former tailback would not describe 1975 as a failed season just because the Buckeyes were not voted No. 1.

It cant be national championship or bust, he said.

It cant? Try telling that to Ohio State fans too young to recall when a successful season could be defined by a win over Michigan and playing in the Rose Bowl. These days, anything short of a College Football Playoff appearance, culminating in a national championship, leaves many fans, players and coaches feeling frustrated.

Before the Big Ten reinstituted football on Wednesday, Ohio State coach Ryan Day tweeted we still have an opportunity to give our young men what they have worked so hard for: a chance to safely compete for a national championship this fall.

Woody Hayes did not think that way. The former OSU coach considered a national championship the outcome of a special season not the goal. Win the Big Ten and Rose Bowl and the chances of being voted poll champions were pretty good.

But there were no guarantees, which explains why Hayes and the next two Buckeyes coaches, Earle Bruce and John Cooper, focused their attention more on winning the conference than winning a national championship that was decided by media and coaches poll voters. During Hayes time, and before, voting to determine the national champion took place before the bowl games were played.

As Griffin explained it, You could win your bowl game and might win the national championship, but it in the end it was still up to the voters.

Cooper learned that the hard way in 1996 the penultimate season before the Bowl Championship Series began when the Buckeyes lone blemish was a 13-9 loss to Michigan in The Slip game. Ohio State dropped from No. 2 to No. 4 in the polls, then defeated No. 2-ranked Arizona State 20-17 in the Rose Bowl.

Cooper hoped voters would bump the Buckeyes to No. 1, but OSU finished No. 2 to Florida after the Gators defeated No. 1 Florida State 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl.

Im envious of the (playoff) system, the 83-year-old Cooper said. I had a couple teams that, Im not saying they would have won it but they would have played for the national championship.

Cooper admitted, however, that such wishful thinking fails to consider context and a changing win-at-all-cost culture.

Times have changed, he said. The goal back then seemed like it was win your games, beat Michigan and go to the Rose Bowl. It used to be you win the Big Ten, youre going to play in the Rose Bowl.

I coached at Oregon State and UCLA, and even out there the goal was to go to the Rose Bowl. Bowls were a reward for a good season. Later on, it became you had to win the Rose Bowl.

The BCS changed everything when it arrived in 1998, pitting No. 1 vs. No. 2 in a championship game that removed some subjectivity from the equation. Schools still had to be voted into the top two spots, but the title was decided on the field.

By the time Ben Hartsock arrived at Ohio State, in 1999, the tight end already had put most of the Rose Bowl mystique in his rearview mirror. He grew up listening to his father rave about The Granddaddy of them All, but as a player, Hartsock knew there were bigger fish to fry.

The importance of the Rose Bowl felt to me like something my dad focused on, Hartsock said. I knew how big it was because I was raised in a house that taught that curriculum, but I transitioned away from it.

When Jim Tressel arrived at Ohio State in 2001, he immediately replaced Rose Bowl with national title.

When Tressel came in, the main focus was Michigan. It starts with beating Michigan, then winning the Big Ten and the national title, Hartsock said. And winning the Big Ten was the only way to get to the national title. You could argue thats not the case today.

A team now can fail to win its regular-season conference championship and still win a national title, as Alabama did in 2011 (BCS) and 2017 (College Football Playoff). The playoff selection committee emphasizes that its only mission is to choose the four best teams.

Left unsaid is the reality that any team outside the top four and any bowl outside the two semifinals and championship game becomes an afterthought.

Its now all about making the playoff. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer in 2014 even gave a name to the quest: The Chase.

That doesnt mean coaches minimize conference championships. Meyer stressed in 2014 that we wake up every day to compete for championships in November. But those conference titles are more a means to an end than the ultimate goal. In Ohio States case, the first job is to win the Big Ten East Division, which gets you into the conference championship game, then win in Indianapolis to hopefully earn a playoff berth.

As for the players, todays Buckeyes are more aware of the drive for a national championship than their predecessors. With 24/7 sports media, tuning out the playoff noise is impossible.

Of course, some things never change, no matter the ultimate goal.

In early August, when the Big Ten was adjusting its schedules to eliminate nonconference games during the coronavirus pandemic, OSU quarterback Justin Fields tweeted, I dont care when we play Michigan, I just want to play them and beat the brakes off them.

This has been achieved by world-class R&D, being in one of the largest markets globally, strong investment and government support including protective trading. However, China is not leading in capacitor-supercapacitor hybrids where the USA saw a $7 million follow on order recently.

An exception to the commoditisation is small supercapacitors in the form of battery-supercapacitor hybrids BSH, aerospace and military ones working at 150C, capacitor-supercapacitor hybrids beating tantalum electrolytics on ripple and one fifth to one tenth of the size and weight and ones in odd formats such as to go in a watch or smart card. Those working at 85C, -40C and 3V as single cells are less common and in demand.

Several companies declare their supercapacitors to be "graphene" as a badge of honour. It can mean non-flammable, relatively non-toxic, no use of the volatile, toxic carcinogen acetonitrile, valuably improved series resistance, better voltage and energy density in a pure EDLC - all good things justifying higher price.

Raghu Das predicts, "Acquisitions and mergers will continue. One billion dollar supercapacitor businesses may be created by 2045. If the addressable markets we have analysed are strongly penetrated, then it will be much earlier. Given past disappointments, our upside forecast currently stands at $7 billion in 2041."

The 5 Weirdest Things About Kirby’s Body, Revealed | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Kirby is one of Nintendo's most adorable characters, as well as one of its most bizarre. Here's what you should know about the pink puffball's body.

Nintendo's lovable pink fluffball has been around for over 20 years since his debut in Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy. Since then, Kirby has found himself in many adventures that have forced him to adapt to various situations, from getting turned to yarn to riding a giant robot through space, and that's not even getting into his signature copy ability, which changesboth his appearance and capabilities in battle.

Throughout Kirby's storied history, the hero of Pop Star has gone through many changes from great to small to incredibly strange, but always maintaining that adorably iconic silhouette. Here is a quick look at the various weird aspects of Kirby's appearance and biology and how it has changed from conception until now.

Despite being powerful enough to eliminate gigantic magic space monsters and inhale black holes, Kirby's only officially listed height places himat under a single foot. This little factoid comes froma character profile promoting the release of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shardsin the Japanese-only Nintendo Online Magazine.

This listing should be taken with a grain of salt, as in the same game, it's shown Kirby actually reaches about half the height of his friend Adeleine, who is, for all intents and purposes, a normal human girl (albeit one that can paint pictures that come to life). Super Smash Bros. fans should also be awarethatheight hardly matter when it comes to Nintendo characters, as Captain Olimar from Pikminis barely the size of a quarter in his own game.

Considering how rubbery and pliable the little guy is, this should be a given, but it has been officially confirmed that Kirby has no skeletonand no teeth. How Kirby manages to hold himself up and maintain his shape is still a mystery.

The animeKirby: Right Back At Ya! (simply titled Kirby of the Stars in Japan) had an episode titled "A Dental Dilemma" where a dentist monster created by Nightmare Enterprises tries to find teeth in Kirby's mouth to clean, only to find he has none. Not that he needed teeth to begin with, since he vacuums up mountain-sized cakes and monsters on a daily basis.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Behind-the-Scenes Photo Has Fans Angry at Nico All Over Again – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Even though the coronavirus pandemic is very much still in full swing, some things are coming back. For example, some shows have resumed filming.

One of these shows is Greys Anatomy, and thats a good thing. Fans need new episodes of Greysto get them through these trying times. Plus, the global pandemic has provided a lot of inspiration for the writers behind the show. The cast is back at work, and posting pictures wearing masks, and socially distancing from their fellow stars.

A recent behind the scenes photo of Alex Landi and Jake Borelli on set has fans fuming. Its not over their safety precautions, however.

Landi and Borelli are appropriately spaced out and wearing masks for the photo. But that doesnt mean that Nico and Levi will be keeping their distance in the upcomingGreys Anatomyseason.

Fans on Reddit though that Landis presence on set was a sure sign that Levi and Nico would be getting back together. A lot of fans were upset at the prospect.

Nico left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in season 16. He took a job with the Seattle Mariners. Many viewers hoped that Nicos departure would be permanent. Others speculate that the new COVID-related episodes have given the writers a reason to bring the character back.

As one fan wrote: Since they are working the COVID storyline in that will likely affect it since he was leaving to go to a sports team.

RELATED: Greys Anatomy: Is Grey Sloan Memorial a Real Hospital? Yes and No

Fans were really riled up over the picture of Landi and Borelli. Most of them were worried that Nico would return and mistreat Levi, the budding doctor and fan favorite. Fans hate Nico and Levi together, and were happy to see Nico go.

According to one fan: this picture actually made me mad; i was so hopeful he would go away.

Other fans dont hate Nico specifically, but dont think hes a good fit for Levi. Fans commented things like Levi deserves so much better than Nico, and i just hope levi realizes that he deserves someone better.

Still others just downright hate Nico for his boring personality. Another redditor wrote Ugh Nico no personality or character. The hate for Nico on reddit is real. One fan went so far as to write they should give nico covid just saying.

There is one good thing about Nico coming back. The actor who plays him, Landi, is quite good looking. Fans were able to see the silver lining in Nicos return. Although none of them were happy to see Nico and Levi back together, they take solace in the fact that theyll have someone pretty to look at, even if they wont be enjoying the content.

One fan commented: Nico was super hot when he was first introduced.. but I got over that real quick. Im not the biggest fan of Nico. Another wrote: The only thing I actually like about Nico is his looks, and lets be honest, hes pretty hot.

Fans who love Landis looks but hate Nico can catch the actor on one of his other shows listed on IMDb. Hes also on NetflixsInsatiable.

His career is just taking off, and the role of Nico is his first long-term run on television. When the second season ofInsatiabledrops, Landi will be in that too. His character plays a stripper, which is good news for fans who love Landis looks. They also may find his character more palatable.

Spineology Announces FDA De Novo Grant of Minimally Invasive OptiMesh Expandable Interbody Fusion System – OrthoSpineNews

September 21, 2020

ST. PAUL, Minn.(BUSINESS WIRE)Spineology Inc., an innovator in anatomy-conserving surgery, is excited to announce the FDA grant of its proprietary Spineology Interbody Fusion System, now called the OptiMesh Expandable Interbody Fusion System. The grant follows the successful completion of the SCOUT (Spineology Clinical Outcomes Trial) Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) trial. OptiMesh is a unique mesh device that expands in three dimensions, enabling surgeons to perform interbody fusion procedures through the smallest access in the spine industry.

The SCOUT IDE trial outcomes data was presented at the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) Annual Meeting in November 2019, by the trials lead investigator, John Chi, M.D., M.P.H. Dr. Chi is Director of Neurosurgical Oncology at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chi and his co-authors reported:

We have found this innovative, minimally invasive device to be a safe and effective option for lumbar interbody fusion procedures, said Dr. Chi. The outcomes, including high fusion rates, improved function, reduced pain and high satisfaction rates, are very favorable. Additionally, the minimal exposure requirements yielded an exceptional safety profile.

Spineology is preparing for a Q1 2021 launch of the OptiLIF procedure utilizing the OptiMesh device. This procedure enables enhanced recovery and exceptional efficiency, and its outcomes are supported by prospective FDA IDE clinical data.

OptiLIF is the least invasive lumbar fusion procedure that I can do, said Dr. Stephane Lavoie of DeLand, Florida, an investigator in the SCOUT study. The unique OptiMesh implant can be inserted through a one-centimeter incision and then expanded to restore anatomy, which provides neural decompression and optimally conforms to a patients endplates. As a result, patients recover quickly, and the impact to procedure efficiency is significant. OptiLIF will have a major impact on the standard of care related to low back and leg pain.

The FDA De Novo grant of the OptiMesh Expandable Interbody Fusion System opens the door to commercialization of Spineologys OptiLIF procedure, which supports Spineologys anatomy-conserving product strategy.

I am pleased to announce the De Novo grant of our OptiMesh implants and instrumentation to support the OptiLIF procedure. Based on the strong SCOUT study results and experiences of our investigators, we are preparing for a full market launch in Q1 of 2021. I anticipate OptiLIF will help take surgery for low back and leg pain to the next level through its ability to provide excellent patient outcomes, enhanced recovery and exceptional efficiency, said John Booth, Spineologys CEO.

About Spineology Inc.

At Spineology, we are dedicated to transforming spine surgery by providing innovative, anatomy-conserving technologies for surgeons and their patients. Our proprietary mesh technology is used in the OptiMesh and Duo implants, which expand in three dimensions to create large footprints and allow placement of anatomy-conforming interbody fusion devices through very small incisions. This technology preserves spinal anatomy, increases procedural efficiency, and accelerates patient recovery. Learn more atspineology.com.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Sarah Drew’s Recent Instagram Post About Jackson and April Has Fans Itching for a Reunion – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The countdown to Greys Anatomy Season 17 has officially begun. Recently, the cast and crew started production on the new season, which will be released on ABC starting Thursday, Nov. 12. Of course, this means the fandom is buzzing. But no one is quite as excited as Sarah Drew (April Kepner), who supported the shows return with a sweet Greys Anatomy throwback alongside Jesse Williams (Jackson Avery). So naturally, viewers are begging for a Japril reunion.

RELATED: Greys Anatomy: 3 Love Confessions Fans Will Never Forget

For anyone who needs a refresher, Jackson and April didnt end up together on Greys Anatomy. The couples rollercoaster romance ended in divorce. However, they had a daughter, Harriet Kepner-Avery, and decided to co-parent.

Meanwhile, Drew left after the Greys Anatomy Season 14 finale. On the show, April quit her job at Grey Sloan Memorial to provide medical care for homeless communities. That said, the character is still in Seattle.

April also received her happy ending with Matthew Taylor (Justin Bruening), the man she left at the altar in season 10. Then in her final episode, April and Matthew got married as Jackson supported them both as a friend.

In early September 2020, the Greys Anatomy Season 17 cast returned to set to start filming. Then in an Instagram post published on Sept. 14, Drew honored the cast and crew with a throwback to Jackson and April from the season 12 episode titled Unbreak My Heart.

In honor of my pals over at Greys starting back up this past week, heres a fun throw back to #japrilthemovie, Drew wrote. Our amazing director for that episode, #robcorn sent this photo to us over the weekend. This episode will go down as one of my all time favorite television experiences. Every one of those 9 days on set was joyous.

The actor highlighted writer Elizabeth Klaviter and director Rob Corn for their involvement with the episode. Then she reflected on her experience.

We felt like we were in this magical little bubble making our own movie, Drew wrote. This pic is from the rehearsal of that epic 15-page scene that ended with us pelting each other with fortune cookies. We spent a whole day (12-13 hours) shooting that one scene together. It felt like we were performing a one act play and it was really hard work but a profoundly fulfilling experience.

She added, Sending love to all the #japril fans out there and of course, to my co-captain @ijessewilliams.

Drews heartfelt Instagram post had Greys Anatomy fans hoping for a reunion between Jackson and April. Many viewers also noted they missed the actors presence on the ABC medical drama. So would Drew ever return? When speaking with Entertainment Tonight in 2019, the Shondaland star hinted she would never say never.

I will never close the door on my family at Greys, Drew said. It just depends. Its a hard question to answer because it is not an opportunity that has presented itself.

At this point, no one knows whether well ever see a Japril reunion on Greys Anatomy. But whatever happens in the future, its clear Drews experience on the Shondaland drama was something extraordinary.

Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Relationships That Should Have Happened But Never Did – Screen Rant

There are many iconic and memorable romances on Grey's Anatomy. However, have fans ever thought that a character was better suited with someone else?

The popular primetime medical drama Grey's Anatomy has been around for what seems like an eternity now. The show has, over the years, given fansa gamut of human emotions with a barrageof relatable characters, navigating a complex range of relationships.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy Characters & Their Disney Counterparts

From couples that make no sense, like Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce, to those that are absolutely adorable together such as Callie and Arizona, Jackson and April, and of course, Derek and Meredith, relationships on Grey'shave been an integral part of the show's astounding success and record run.

FHowever, do fans ever feel like there is often great chemistry between other characters that largely goes unexplored? Could these relationships have become the show's greatest romance ever? Here are some great contenders that unfortunately never happened.

Owen Hunt joined the hit medical drama early on and was introduced as Cristina Yang's love interest. Upon first impression, Owen seemed like the perfect match for Cristina as they both shared the same passion for medicine and their work.

However, over the years Owen's storyline went haywire, as he went from one woman to another, first cheating on Cristina, then hurriedly married Amelia, and getting Teddy pregnant by appearing at her door out of nowhere. Even at present, his relationship with Teddy is on the rocks with the latter having cheated on him. Owen might be a Grey's veteran but one wonders if, after Cristina, he might have beenbetter off alone. At least for a little while or until he figures things out.

Erica Hahn was the brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon who came like a gush of wind after Preston Burke left Seattle Grace and then left as hurriedly as she came.

However, in that brief period of time, she was shown to have developed a relationship with fan-favorite, Callie Torres. For both of them, a casual hook up turned out to be an eye-opener for the two women as Erica realized that she was happier dating women and Callie started exploring her bisexuality. Erica and Callie's story ended abruptly but it would have been interesting to watch them navigate their new-found sexuality together.

The 'Ortho god' Atticus Lincoln seems to be in a stable relationship with Amelia Shepherd at the moment although knowing Amelia, things could blow up at any moment.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: The 10 Hardest Hitting Break-Ups

But Link also sharesa pleasant, friendly equation with Jo Wilson, who he happened to know in the past. And seeing how things turned out between Jo and Alex, maybe Link would have been a better option, for he seems more anchored and understanding than Alex ever was. However, given that this is Grey's, there might be hope for Link and Jo still.

Another couple that seemed to be on the verge of happening but never culminated was Alex and Addison. For those who forgot, it was Addison who tried to mellow down the arrogant surgical intern in his early days and drew Alexinto pediatrics, which heultimately excelled.

The two were attracted to each other and sparks flew, which led to the couple hooking up. Of course, Alex was way too immature to be in a serious relationship with someone like Addison but that in itself would have been fun to watch. Addison'spartnership with Derek, although complicated, was never meant to be, so maybe she could have been in a quirky relationship with the smartmouth Alex Karev.

Mark and Callie were best friends with benefits and Callie even got pregnant with Mark's daughter. The two were very comfortable with each other and their camaraderie was mostly uncomplicated and fun.

As always, life and relationships are complex in Grey's Anatomy. So the two people who were best fit for each other don't end up together. Still, if Callie had decided she wanted to start a relationship with Mark, fans wouldn't have complained.

In season 4, young Lexie Grey encountered a patient with a giant tumor in his carotid artery, Nick Hanscom. Nick had a sense of humor, was flirtatious, and soon struck up a bond with Lexie who seemed to enjoy talking to him.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 10 Couples That Shouldn't Have Worked, But Did

In fact, there were definite signs of chemistry between the two. After all, Lexie was soft by nature and Nick was the kind of guy who could make light of a very serious situation. Hewas also the first patient Lexie was entrusted with and his tragic death hit her hard. Had Nick survived, the writers might have considered giving the two a chance.

Grey's Anatomy is as much about the patients as it is about the doctors and staff at Grey Sloan Memorial. Meredith has saved numerous lives in the course of seventeen long seasons, but very few patients have dared to flirt with her.

One such patient was Nick Marsh in season 14, a handsome transplant doctor who had just undergone a kidney transplant himself. He might not have been 'McDreamy' but he was quite charming in his own way and was clearly hitting on Meredith, who didn't seem to mind the interest. Meredith and Nick would have made a really cute couple together, but that never happened.

Meredith went on a blind date in season 15 after her matchmaker patient, Cece, convinced her to start going out again. And who should she meet butHow I Met Your Motheralum, JoshRadnor, who appeared as software engineer Jon here.

The two connected instantly and Meredith even seemed okay with giving Jon a chance, canceling her afternoon to spend time with her date. However, once Jon mentioned that he wasn't comfortable with single moms, this ended her interest in him. Although the writers didn't take the narrative further, fans adored Jon with Meredith and wouldn't mind seeing him make a comeback.

Actor Martin Henderson appeared in season 14 as Nathan Riggs, an ex-colleague and former friend of Owen's and a potential love interest for Meredith Grey.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy 10 Famous Actors You Forgot Were In The Series

Nathan seemed like a fitting replacement for Derek Shepherd although Meredith didn't give him a chance at first. And by the time she did, Nathan's ex-fiance Megan was back in the picture. Meredith and Nathan only had a few moments together but it wouldhave been fun to see them as a couple.

Remember the adorable George O'Malley, who died a devastating death in season 5 after throwing himself in front of a bus to save a random stranger? For those who don't remember, Lexie Grey had a phase when she was infatuated by George right after she joined Seattle Grace as a surgical intern.

The two even became roommates for some time, with Lexie trying to draw George's attention with her kind and thoughtful ways. But George's storyline had already become chaotic by the time and for some reason, he never noticed Lexie. Could one have imagined how sweet this pairing would have been ifGeorge had recognized how great Lexiewas?Unfortunately, fans never got to see them together.

‘Greys Anatomy’ Star Katherine Heigl Weighs in on Izzies Return in Season 17 – GoodHousekeeping.com

Grey's Anatomy set major expectations for season 17 when the show brought back Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) for a dream scene in the premiere. Shocking fans even more, another blast from the past, George O' Malley (T.R. Knight), returned a few episodes later. All of this is leading fans to wonder what other iconic characters the ABC medical drama is going to invite back. Will Katherine Heigl's character, Izzie Stevens, be next?

Right now, the answer appears to be one giant question mark, according to what Katherine told E! News's Daily Pop. "You know, I just I don't know, but I would never say never," Katherine explained.

While it might not be the definite "yes" some fans are hoping for, Katherine, who is front and center in the new Netflix series Firefly Lane, didn't give a firm "no," either. If you ask us, it's a bit more promising answer than the response she gave Entertainment Tonight back in 2019.

"I almost feel like that would just be distracting, again, to sort of what theyve done with that show in the seven years since I left and what thats become and what it is to the fans now," she at the time. "I almost feel like it would be like, Yeah we already let that go, why are you here?'"

But then again, Katherine said this before Justin Chambers exited the show last March and his character, Alex Karev, left his wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington), to be with Izzie. So who knows what may unfold in the future.

As fans can remember, Katherine walked away from Grey's in 2010 following the actress's controversial decision to withdraw her name from Emmy consideration in 2008. At the time, Katherine said in a statement per The New York Times that she based her decision on feeling like she wasn't "given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination."

Not surprisingly, this didn't sit well with show creator Shonda Rhimes, who later told Oprah Winfrey in 2012 that despite feeling "stung" by the comments, she was also "not surprised."

On The Howard Stern Show in 2016, Katherine claimed she left the show partly because she wanted to start a family (she now has three kids with her husband, Josh Kelley) and because she felt herself "floundering." She also revealed that she had apologized to Shonda behind closed doors about her Emmy comments.

"I was really embarrassed." she said. "I went in to [showrunner] Shonda [Rhimes] and said, I was so sorry, that wasnt cool. I should not have said that.' I shouldnt have said anything publicly, but at the time I didnt think anybody would notice."

So there you have it. Fans will have to keep tuning in when Grey's returns on March 11 to see what Shonda has in store for the Grey-Sloan crew.

Crash Landing on You has already reached cult status, even though if it just aired between 2019 to 2020. One of the biggest reasons why CLOY became such a worldwide hit is because of the palpable chemistry shared between Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin as star-crossed lovers. While Bin played the reserved North Korean captain Ri Jung-hyuk, Ye-jin portrayed the confident South Korean heiress Yoon Se-ri.

*SPOILERS ALERT* In today's pick for Anatomy of a K-drama Scene, we take a look at one of the underrated romantic sequences between Jung-hyuk and Se-ri which would flutter the coldest of hearts. While their reunion and kissing sequences are the perfect K-drama moments, we're specifically talking about the scented candle moment from CLOY Ep 5. For some context, as Se-ri heads to the market during her free time, she gets separated from her ladies squad, is lost and finds it hard to trace back Jung-hyuk's address. Moreover, as it's late at night, her sense of direction is even more diluted.

When Jung-hyuk finds out that Se-ri has gotten lost, he cycles his way quickly to the market but can't seem to find her. Eventually, he remembers her obsession with scented candles and buys one, lighting it and holding it high above his head in the hopes of Se-ri walking towards the light. With Davichi's Sunsetfrom CLOY OST as the perfect background score, Se-ri's worrisome face changes into a moment of reflection as she realises its Jung-hyuk, who comes as a literal knight in shining armour rescuing her, always at the right place and at the right time. As she walks towards him, Jung-hyuk breathes a sigh of relief and says, "This time, it's not just a candle but a scented one. Right?" To which, Se-ri smiles bright and says back a simple, "Right."

This scene may seem like a simple cutesy moment between the two main leads but holds a much more meaningful stance as it conveys how important Se-ri has become for Jung-hyuk. Especially, knowing the fact that the two can't be together given the literal 'border' problem between them. Yet, when knowing that Se-ri is in trouble, Jung-hyuk drops everything and goes searching for her. While stoic in nature, you see a change in Jung-hyuk thanks to Se-ri. On the other hand, Se-ri, who has had her fair share of forgettable flings find a safe space in Jung-hyuk, confirming that he'll be there for her, no matter what.

An underrated moment which has so many thoughts and emotions. And, that's all because of a scented candle.

Greys Anatomy: Another Beloved Character Returns – Deadline

SPOILER ALERT: The story includes a detail about the Dec. 3 episode of Greys Anatomy.

The promo for tonights fourth episode of this seasons ABC hit medical drama Greys Anatomy teased that another person returns from Merediths past.

As Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) continues to battle Covid-19, her dreams have been taking her to a beach where the love of her life, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), is waiting for her. Tonight, someone else Meredith was fond of who tragically died came back to see her. Leaning onto the railing of a lifeguard tower at the beach was George OMalley (T.R. Knight).

Both were surprised but happy to see each other.

It was the first of several dream meetings between Meredith and George, in which they strolled along the beach and his death and funeral.

I was devastated when you died, Meredith said.

You were all cracking up at my funeral, George said in response.George spoke of what he misses about being alive (Dancing til you drop, laughing til you cry, food and textures, the crunch of cereal as you eat it out of the box, thefeel of clean sheets and good pillow at the end of a long day.)

At their final conversation, Meredith told George how much he meant to her.

You changed my life George, she said in one of the episodes most emotional moments, which was soon followed by another, a reunion at the beach of four of Greys original characters, George (Knight), Meredith (Pompeo), Richard (James Pickens Jr.) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

Knights appearance is part of a beach motif throughout the pandemic-themed Season 17 of Greys Anatomy designed to bring joy to fans.

It kicked off in the season premiere with the jaw-dropping return of Greys original male lead Dempsey.

Asked after the opener what other beloved characters from Greys past may come back, series executive producer/showrunner Krista Vernoff said:You have to tune in and see who comes to the beach. Itll be a joyful discovery.

Both Dempsey and Knight were original Greys Anatomy cast members alongside Pompeo whose characters were fan favorites. Knight left in Season 5; Dempsey departed in Season 11.

Dempseys McDreamy died after being hit by a semi truck when he pulled over to help a family involved in a car accident. In a similarly selfless act, Knights OMalley jumped in front of a bus to rescue a woman he didnt know. At the time of his exit, Knight said he felt his character had expired after getting less screen time.

Is Greys Anatomy Season 17 on tonight, Thursday, Dec. 24? – Hidden Remote

Will there be a new episode of Greys Anatomy Season 17 tonight?

Its Thursday, and that means TGIT on ABC, right? Sadly not this week. Its Christmas Eve, andGreys Anatomy Season 17 is not on.

ABC doesnt air new episodes of its top TV shows during the Christmas holidays. This allows for the cast and crew members to take some time off during this time and makes sure there are enough episodes in the bank for when the show returns. Plus, viewing figures are usually down during this time, so ABC isnt going to risk its top dramas.

Instead,The Greatest Showman will air tonight, giving families something to check out before sending the kids to bed to wait for Santa Claus.

Its going to be a while before there are new episodes.Greys Anatomy Season 17 wont return in January like it usually does. Due to COVID-19 and filming precautions, there arent enough episodes to run from January as normal. Were waiting until Mar. 4, 2021.

When the show returns, there are a few storylines to catch up on. The first is Meredith Grey, who has been intubated to help with her breathing. Its a chance to save her life from COVID-19.

Well likely see more familiar faces return on her beach. This is the place for her to try to fight for her life so she can return to her kids.

Meanwhile, Koracick is suffering from fear. And thats not all that surprising. People with COVID around him are dying. Does that mean he will? Thats what he is so scared of, and hell be even more terrified when he finds out whats happened to Meredith.

Then we have DeLuca, who saw the sex trafficking woman from the previous season. He isnt going to let her get away again, and this time he is on her tail with his sister to back him up.

Theres a lot going on when the show returns.

Watch reruns ofGreys Anatomy Season 17 on Hulu while you wait for new episodes.

The anatomy of a machine safeguarding project – The Fabricator

Figure 5 A safeguarding system installer inspects an electrically interlocked rolling gate to allow access for coil loading. Images provided

Machine operators suffer approximately 18,000 injuries and 800 deaths per yeara stat from ICW Insurance Companiesand year after year, machine guarding violations show up on OSHAs top 10 list of most frequent citations. Considering OSHAs recent renewal of its National Emphasis Program on amputations targeting metalworking manufacturers and the ever-increasing costs related to employee injuries, fabricators have a strong incentive to implement a rigorous and consistent machine guarding program.

The challenge is putting together an organized, systematic machine safeguarding plan. The task can be daunting given the typical manufacturing facility that has machines of varying years of manufacture and function. Which machines pose the greatest danger? What tasks should be eliminated or modified because they put employees in unacceptably hazardous situations? How do companies begin to determine what hazards their machines present and how should they be mitigated?

The best and most effective way to tackle this overwhelming task is to understand where the hazards are, why they exist, and how frequently employees are exposed to them. Once companies know where their exposures lie, they can then determine the best course of action to mitigate risks.

The following four-stage, methodical approach can lead to a successful and dynamic safeguarding program. It begins with a machine guarding survey that serves as a high-level triage and helps prioritize projects. Stage 2 is a machine-specific risk assessment, and stage 3 addresses the mitigation of the identified risks. The final stage implements the well-thought-out design and involves operator training (or retraining) on how to work with rather than around the new safeguarding.

A full facility review often performed by a third party, the machine guarding survey typically takes a day or two on-site. Outside evaluators, who havent seen the operation day in and day out, offer fresh experienced eyes and typically are more critical of a companys processes. The surveyors spend five to 10 minutes per machine evaluating the status of six key elements of machine safety (see Figure 1).

Each element is given a score, and the combined total is used to determine what level of priorityhigh, medium, or lowneeds to be given to that machine. Machines with a score greater than 40 are considered high priority and warrant an additional formal risk assessment or, in some cases, immediate safeguarding.

The survey does not consider the severity of harm for the identified hazards. For example, an unguarded machine may receive a high survey score because of a missing guard, but the subsequent risk assessment determines that the actual risks that unguarded machine creates are low, because the hazards have little chance of injuring an operator severely.

The term risk assessment is often used in a generic sense; some use it to describe the guarding survey in Stage 1. Multiple definitions of risk assessment can be found in various documents, including those from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). OSHA calls the process a job hazard analysis.

Regardless, in the current context the risk assessment differs from the machine guarding survey in its depth of investigation and its ultimate purpose determining whether identified risks are acceptable and how unacceptable risks can be mitigated. The goal is to reduce unacceptable risks to an acceptable level.

The machine guarding risk assessment should involve a broad team, including top managers, floor supervisors (production, operation, maintenance, and setup personnel), machine operators, and an outside safeguarding professional. Each plays a critical role and brings unique perspective.

Figure 1 Six questions provide insight into a machine's safety fitness.

The project must involve top managers who can commit the proper resources. Without buy-in from the top of an organization, any safeguarding program is doomed to fail from insufficient support and a lack of proper funding.

The floor supervisor knows how things actually work in the shop. Many safeguards, once implemented, impede work flow because operational variables best understood by the supervisor are not distilled into the design. The floor manager voices his or her opinion about whether a given safeguarding scheme will impede or enhance throughput.

Machine operators best understand the intricacies of each machine and manufacturing process, and their input into safeguarding requirements is invaluable. Ultimately, they must use the safeguarding system successfully and not be compelled to circumvent it.

Outside safeguarding professionals bring a range of expertise in applicable standards and regulations. They should have a deep knowledge of safeguarding technology, and they should be relied upon to do a correct installation and retrofit of the safeguarding system.

Companies in different industries use different risk assessment systems and platforms. The most widely recognized are found in several documents: for domestic machinery, ANSI B11.0, Safety of Machinery, General Requirements and Risk Assessment; and for global machinery, ISO 12100, Safety of Machinery General Principles for Design Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction, and ISO 13849-1, Safety of Machinery. Each offers a series of logical steps to systematically examine the hazards associated with machinery, and each has examples of risk scoring systems that assess the required level of hazard mitigation (see Figures 2 and 3).

With these tools, those performing the assessment gather information about the machine, identify the tasks performed, and score the hazard associated with each. They then determine if those hazards are acceptable or not. If they are not acceptable, they move on to Stages 3 and 4, designing and implementing protective measures to reduce the unacceptable risks to an acceptable level. Any risk determined to be acceptable at this point should be mitigated through administrative measures such as operation-specific training.

Both the machine guarding survey and the machine guarding risk assessment should be treated as living documents. As machines are cycled in and out of the shop or are repurposed, these documents must be updated to reflect the changed environment.

The design stage considers all that has been learned in the previous two stages. If it doesnt, the possibility of a safeguard inadequately reducing risk or rendering a critical task undoable is tremendously high.

Consider a fabricator and stamper that, after having gone through a machine guarding review, found that it had an automated coil slitting line with multiple hazards. Existing guarding was minimal. A deep-dive machine guarding risk assessment identified several unacceptable hazards.

The goal was to maximize safety without compromising efficiency. The line was divided into sections(1) coil loading and decoiling, (2) slitting, (3) pit and wiping, (4) recoiling, and (5) slit-coil unloadingand all five had unacceptable hazards. Considering this, the best solution was to design a perimeter fence enclosure for the entire line (see Figure 4). No individuals would be permitted within the guarded area. The design lowered risk to acceptable levels, but it needed to be customized because it prevented operators from performing necessary tasks.

Figure 2 This risk scoring system is based on the one described in ANSI B11.0, table 2.

To keep residual risks at acceptable levels, the safeguarding design needed to allow access inside the enclosure only during controlled conditions. Operators also needed to change how they performed some of their tasks.

Coil Loading and Decoiling. For instance, to allow a forklift to load the unslit coil onto a coil car, a large rolling gate was added to the perimeter fence (see Figure 5).
To prevent the line from operating when the gate was opened and the coil was being loaded, the gate was electrically interlocked. With the coil loaded onto the car, an operator used a hold-to-run pendant to drive the coil car to the decoiling reel. The operator never rode on the car itself, and the residual risks created by the coil car movements were deemed acceptable. That said, to do the job properly, the operator needed to be close enough to observe the coil car as it approached the reel and transferred the coil. That meant he needed to be within the enclosure. To allow him to do this, an interlocked human access door was also added.

Slitting. To ensure proper alignment when threading the coil, the operator needed to watch the edge of the coil closely as it entered the slitting knives. An interlocked human access door was added to allow easy entry from the control console outside the perimeter guarding. Inside the controlled area and with the door open, the operator could activate an enable switch and a hold-to-run pendant to jog the coil. This required the main control system to be modified to allow only jog-mode operation when the door was open and the enable switch activated.

Pit and Wiping. After the material exited the slitting knives, it dropped into a pit and then into a wiping operation that cleaned the material before recoiling. Wiping pad pressure was maintained with an air cylinder, adjusted regularly during operation. The operator also needed to observe the wiping operation to know when to make the adjustment and watch the slit material while it traveled through the pit. The safeguarding solution moved the pressure adjustment valve outside the fencing and added a camera system so that the operator could observe at a station outside the enclosure.

Recoiling. During setup, the operator needed to guide the slit material onto the recoiling arbor while inside the enclosure, so a second enable switch and hold-to-run pendant station was added at this location to provide for this. Operators also monitored recoiled material tension during regular operation, so a second camera system was added for this purpose, allowing operators to observe the material through a monitor at the control console.

Slit-coil Unloading. The now recoiled slit material was unloaded by forklift and taken to the next operation. Limited spacing made it impossible to add another rolling gate. Instead, a large gap in the fencing allowed the forklift to access the recoiling arbor, and a safety laser scanner guarded the gap. Whenever something or someone was detected within the scanned area, the line was prevented from running.

After the safeguarding installation, operators could continue to function productively, yet at lower risk. Thats the ideal of a properly safeguarded system.

What made it possible? First, the installation crew worked with a detailed plan with clear instructions on how the safeguards should function. They documented changes to existing machine controls clearly and accurately. And because operators were involved early in the process, training was simple.

An organized approach makes safeguarding installation less disruptive. Triaging helps address the most hazardous operations first, and the four-stage approach helps prioritize hazards thoroughly and objectively.

Such a detailed approach to safety should help any manufacturer create a successfully guarded shop. The ideal guarding makes jobs both safe and easy, so that operators will want to work with the machine guards rather than around them. After all, working around poorly designed safeguards can be more dangerous than having no safeguards at all.

The Anatomy of Account Takeover Attacks in Banking and Fintech – Banking Exchange

COVID-19 has already proved its substantial impact on online-based fraud. According to recent analyses of real user sessions and attack patterns on my companys fraud and abuse prevention network, digital attack rates rose by 20% in the first quarter of this year, with payment attacks up by 49% compared to the end of 2019. Over the past six months, our network recorded double the volume of attacks since the second half of 2019, with a 25% attack rate across all online transactions.

Fraudsters are proving to be exceptionally nimble and determined, quickly adapting to ever-changing realities and turning new situations such as the pandemic into an opportunity to widen their reach and maximize profits. To overcome the prevalence of anti-fraud and security solutions in the highly regulated industry of banking and fintech, fraudsters are planning and orchestrating attacks more diligently than ever before, and taking advantage of the new socio-economic context to carry out successful fraud as a result. In fact, financial institutions on the Arkose Labs network saw attack levels rise notably in Q2 of 2020, after an initial dip in April.

To navigate this new era of online fraud and realistically stand a chance at combating persistent fraudsters, organizations need to familiarize themselves with common attack vectors. Knowledge and proactivity are especially critical for organizations within the banking and fintech sector, as the potential gain for fraudsters is higher.

Common Attack Vectors and ATO Use Cases

Two common attack vectors for harvesting credentials in fintech and banking include phishing and malware. With phishing attacks, customers receive emails that appear to come from a trusted organization. Theyre asked to click a link and login because theres an important message or issue that requires immediate attention. Few will notice that the link isnt safe, and once they log in to the fake website, their credentials are recorded into the attackers database and customers are redirected to the real login page. With malware attacks, customers are enticed to install malware on their computer, which listens for keystrokes as the customer logs in to various web sites. Any credentials collected are reported to a database owned by the attacker.

Once credentials are acquired via phishing or malware, attackers may use a botnet or automated attack tool such as Sentry MBA to carry out their account takeover (ATO). They may also leverage cheap human labor as part of the ATO attack process to remain under the radar. Attackers will then use the compromised accounts to commit fraud or simply resell them to the highest bidder. Accounts that have been taken over are exploited as follows:

User-Friendly, Naturally Evolving Defense Strategies are Key

Ultimately, all online accounts are at risk and fraudsters will leverage any number of techniques to achieve their goals. Dont wait for an ATO attack to occur before deciding to protect a login endpoint. Protect all login endpoints equally whether they handle web or mobile traffic. Continuously re-evaluate resilience levels and assess where new attack points could emerge across various customer touchpoints. Given the financial hardships already brought on by COVID-19 in addition to the sensitive collateral involved, fintech and banking organizations cant rely on their customers to be sufficiently security savvy. Investing in user-friendly fraud protection and defense strategies that are capable of naturally evolving with emerging attack patterns is paramount, now more than ever.
