Alternative and Complementary Medicine Market is projected to experience substantial growth in the next few years – BioSpace

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) refers to medical products and practices that are not part of mainstream practices. While complementary medicine can be used along with mainstream medical practices, alternative medicine are used in place of standard medical treatments. Some CAM therapies have been found to be safe and effective unlike some that have been found to be ineffective or possibly harmful.

Complementary and alternative medicine includes a host of botanicals and nutritional substances such as herbal supplements, dietary supplements, and vitamins. A large number of CAM products are regarded to be safe as they are produced by nature or are present in nature. However, this may not be necessarily true for all natural products. In addition, some naturally sourced medicines may affect the action of other medicines. For instance, St. Johns wort a herb which is used for depression may interfere with the way certain anticancer drugs work.

Herbal supplements can have unwanted effects when used on their own, in combination with other drugs, or in large doses. Vitamins can also be harmful on the body. Too much of vitamin can be detrimental on health, even in a healthy person. Supplements do not need approval from federal government before being commercially available.

Patients of chronic diseases who are considering using complementary or alternative medicine need to talk to their doctor or nurse. This is because some therapies of complementary and alternative medicine may interfere with mainstream medicine or can be also be harmful. The claims of efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine therapy needs to be ascertained before bringing into use.

This yoga instructor is fighting the rise of QAnon in the wellness community – CBC.ca

Read Story Transcript

Seane Corn never thought her duties as yoga instructor would one day include warningpeople about the dangers of an international right-wing conspiracy theory.

The Los Angelesyoga teacher is one of several high-profileInstagram influencers using their platforms to combat the rise of the QAnon conspiracy theory in wellness spaces.

"I just didn't think that I would be having to talk about things like a cabal of people in the U.S. that are kidnapping children and drinking their blood to gain power," Corn told As It Happens host Carol Off.

"I never thought that this would be a conversation I would have to have with my community to say, like, 'This isn't true. This isn't happening. Please use more discernment.'"

QAnonis a conspiracy theory thatposits thatU.S. President Donald Trump is secretly fighting an internationalcabal of Satan-worshipping, leftist eliteswho arerunning a global child sex traffickingring.

It tends to overlap with conspiracy theories that involve anti-vaccination and anti-mask beliefs, and has roots in anti-Semitism and white supremacy.

Once relegated to the fringes of the internet, QAnon hasrecently made its way into more mainstream spaces. QAnon supporterMarjorie Taylor Greene recently won the Republican nomination in Georgia's primary race, and the president himself has referred to the conspiracy theory's followers as people who "love our country."

But it's also started gainingsignificant traction among people who are into wellness, yoga, spiritualityand alternative medicine.

Conspirituality, a podcast that examines the links between wellness and conspiracy, has curated a listof more than two dozen wellness influencers who have alluded to QAnon in their posts.

Corn says she started to notice it creeping into her social media feed at the start of the pandemic, with its followersusing "yoga speak" and wellness branding to radicalize people online.

"The colours might be pastel. The fonts are very specific. There's maybe one post of someone doing yoga. Then the next day it's their food. The next day, it's a lifestyle shot," she said.

"But on maybe the fourth day, there's going to be a post that says, you know, very prettily "COVID is a hoax" and then a bunch of slides that keep giving misinformation and invite you to another link that then gives you more misinformation."

For Corn, the conspiracy theory's proliferation in her community is not all that surprising.

"In the wellness community, there's often a lot of magical thinking," she said.

For example, she says people may turn tocrystals or prayer as a Band-Aid solution for their life's problems, without engaging with those problems on a deeper level.

"I think that some of the messaging in QAnonis appealing to magical thinking. People are afraid. Their instincts are telling them that there's something else going on, but 'I just don't know what it is. I think I'm being lied to,'" she said.

"Someone is coming in and saying, 'Actually, you are,' and taking them down this rabbit hole."

Ali Breland,a reporter for Mother Jones who has been covering the overlap between QAnon and wellness, agrees.

He toldCBC Radio's Day 6 earlier this monththat wellness communities were already rife with anti-vaccination sentiment.

"[It's the idea that] these big powerful interests these external interests that are beyond us, like Big Pharma, that we can't conceptualize, are trying to hurt our children ... and we need to protect them because no one else will," she said.

"That's the prevailing belief of QAnon."

Annie Kelly, a researcher who studies digital extremism, recently wrote in the New York Times that QAnon's "ranks are populated by a noticeably high percentage of women."

While suburban moms with yoga mats might not be the first image that pops into most people's mindswhen they think about onlineconspiracy theorists, Corn says it actually makes a lot of sense especially as QAnon followersflood hashtags like #SaveTheChildren.

"There's a lot of women in this community who are sensitive and empathic. And so you bring in, you know, victimized children and you're going to appeal to that part of them that wants to do something, that wants to engage," Corn said.

Corn, with her 100,000 Instagram followers, is trying to stem the tide by sharing posts that attempt to neutralize the disinformation.

Others are also heeding the call. Shannon Algeo, aL.A. yoga and meditation teacher with 25,000 followers, is one of several influencers who shared an Instagram posttakingstand against the QAnon movement.

"I have a community that stands behind me, or rather stands with me," Corn said."I'm not alone in this effort."

It's the kind of stance that could, at best, cost them some of their followers and income, and at worst, invite harassment and even violence.

Last week, a Texaswoman was charged withaggravated assault with a deadly weapon after shestruck two strangers with her car. According to the arrest affidavits, she believed they were pedophiles. Two people who knew her told the website Right Wing Watch she followedQAnoncontentonline and sent them pro-QAnonmessages.

Still, Corn says she has to speak out. She's already done interviews with the New York Times, Rolling Stone and more.

"I would feel worse being silent. That would make me complicit, and I just can't live with myself in that way,"she said. "So, hopefully, I'll remain safe and we'll see what happens."

Trick or treat – THE WEEK

ON SEPTEMBER 6, Kerala Health Minister K.K. Shailaja reportedly endorsed a study which said that homoeopathic prophylactics were effective against Covid-19. It said that only a few of those who had taken the prophylactic contracted Covid-19 and they, too, recovered soon. The study was carried out in Covid-hotspot Pathanamthitta district, where Arsenicum Album 30C was distributed among 90 per cent of residents. The study aimed to assess the efficacy of the said homoeopathy medicine as an immunity booster. Shailaja later clarified that she neither said that homoeopathy medicines could be used to treat Covid-19 nor stated that the study had been scientifically proven. But by then, the damage was doneit had created a rift in the state medical community.

AYUSH treatments have often been questioned over their safety and efficacy, especially given the lack of robust, empirical studies in their defence.

While the state unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) opposed Shailajas initial statement, homoeopathy practitioners came out in her support. The row has put the spotlight on the debate over the efficacy of alternative medicine to allopathic medicine in the fight against Covid-19, especially at a time when cases are rising and restrictions are being relaxed to open up the economy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had repeatedly asked people to follow advisories issued by the ministry of AYUSH, which suggested a range of home remedies to boost immunity, including consumption of turmeric, honey, ginger and other concoctions. AYUSH treatments have often been questioned over their safety and efficacy, especially given the lack of robust, empirical studies in their defence.

On August 15, the ministry launched a three-month campaign, aimed at increasing awareness about affordable and easy practices that can be adopted for enhancing immunity and preventing any disease. Yet, more than six months after the first case of Covid-19 hit the country, acceptance for AYUSH practices, at best, remains divided on the ground.

For instance, Dr Amol Rawande, a homoeopath based in Nanded in rural Maharashtra, believes that homoeopathy can help fight Covid-19. He said that he had prescribed homoeopathic medicines to more than 400 Covid-positive patients. In the case of a mild to moderate symptomatic patient, Ferrum Phos 6X, Bryonia Alba and Veratrum Viride help in preventing the onset of a cytokine storm, a severe immune reaction, he said. I believe homoeopathy is apt to fight Covid-19 as it works with the immune system, which is most at risk from the virus.

But back in Mumbai, Dr L.M. Parashar, ENT surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospital, had a different tale to tell. Before lockdown, about two to three per cent of OPD patients were suffering from mouth ulcers. Post lockdown, there has been an increase in patients with symptoms such as redness of the mouth, burning sensation and itching, he said. This is because people are constantly drinking homemade concoctions, made without proper ingredients, instead of water, he reasoned. This has led to the rawness of oral mucosa, he said. The point is not to completely ignore or reject alternative medicine, but to consume it correctly and in conjunction with the correct diet and lifestyle, which people are not doing.

The problem with accepting the efficacy of AYUSH remedies, said paediatrician Dr Amol Annadate, was that none of the claims had been proved. There are no trials conducted either for ayurvedic kadhas or homoeopathic medicines like Arsenicum Album 30C, said Annadate, who also owns and runs an ayurveda medical college in Aurangabad. But the role of AYUSH essentially comes into the picture either as pre-Covid [precautions] or at the recovery stage, which can take between two to three months. These are not used as treatments for Covid-19 under any circumstances. He does believe that homoeopathy can help in reducing mortality rate. But there should still be trials to prove it, he said. My ayurvedic consultants are definitely prescribing ayurvedic solutions to patients.

Even as modern medicine continues to be the mainstay of Covid-19 treatment, experts call for an integrated medical approach between the different disciplines so as to better manage the impact of the disease in the long term. Annadate, however, questioned the credibility of the task force set up in May to plan and suggest treatment for asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic patients through the use of ayurveda, unani, homoeopathy and yoga. They havent conducted trials that can prove their efficacy. Scientific evidence is the only thing that will shut up the naysayers, he said.

Dr Gaurang Joshi, director of Atharva Multispecialty Ayurveda Hospital in Gujarats Rajkot, recently tweeted that his hospital has been successfully running online OPD for Covid-19 patients and providing ayurveda treatment at their home. He added that more than 50 patients had turned Covid-negative with their pure ayurveda treatment with home quarantine. I totally stand by my conviction that ayurveda can treat Covid-19, he asserted.

But Dr P. Gopi Kumar, state secretary, IMA Kerala, questioned the scientific validation of the alternative medicines proposed to treat Covid-19 or even serve as immunity boosters. The ministry gave directions for the use of Arsenicum Album 30C as an immunity booster without citing any evidence whatsoever, he said. In a pandemic like this when millions are getting infected and undergoing serious complications, no such drug must be used for which one has no idea about its credibility, authenticity and side effects. So, all these immunity-boosting concoctions and drugs cited by the AYUSH ministry and the state health minister are definitely questionable.

Trick or treat - THE WEEK

QAnon conspiracy theory gaining ground in UK, analysis shows – The Guardian

A conspiracy theory that Donald Trump is waging a secret war against an elite who engage in ritual child abuse is growing across UK social media, Guardian analysis has found.

The QAnon conspiracy theory is propelled by an unlikely coalition of spirituality and wellness groups, vigilante paedophile hunter networks, pre-existing conspiracy forums, local news pages, pro-Brexit campaigners and the far right.

The Guardian tracked five slogans associated with QAnon shared by UK-run Facebook pages over the past year, and found interactions on posts containing these keywords increased fivefold between April and August, the last full month for which data was available.

The unfounded conspiracy theory also draws on predecessor conspiracy theory Pizzagate, which was prevalent during the 2016 US presidential elections, as well as much older antisemitic conspiracies.

In April, there were 18,000 interactions on posts from UK pages containing the keywords, according to analytics tool CrowdTangle. By August this year, engagement had increased significantly with 96,000 reactions, comments and shares. Offline, a nascent street movement linked to QAnon, has organised at least 15 protests across England, Scotland and Wales.

The conspiracy theory is spreading widely among groups who would not usually be associated with the far right.

The Guardian categorised the 273 UK-run pages that had posted QAnon content, and found that pages dedicated to alternative medicine, spirituality and mysticism accounted for the highest proportion of engagement, with 68,000 interactions during the past year.

Gregory Davis, a researcher at Hope not Hate, a charity that monitors extremist groups, said: Its concerning to see [QAnon] diversifying in terms of how its spread and what parts of it are being emphasised.

Whats happening with this diversification is that many groups [are] taking up different elements of it and introducing elements. The danger is that this makes it even less disprovable.

A Facebook page linked to a business selling essential oils and courses in numerology, spiritual guidance and meditation, which has more than a million followers on Facebook, received the second-highest number of interactions of any page measured.

One of these posts was a viral video describing a conspiracy theory about a toy doll, which the original poster alleged showed the head of a Satanic Luciferian monster when dipped in cold water. It had 11 million views at the time of writing. Conspiracies about toys containing secret messages are common among QAnon believers.

The analysis also found QAnon is merging with pre-existing conspiracy theory pages.

There were more than 40 pages promoting other conspiracies, including chemtrails, flat Earth and anti-vax pages, which had recently posted content associated with QAnon, receiving 40,000 interactions during this period.

Vigilante paedophile hunter groups, whose members sometimes pose as children online to entrap potential sexual predators, were also influential in spreading the conspiracy. The Guardian found 12 paedophile hunter groups shared QAnon material, receiving 13,000 interactions over the period.

The analysis also found 10 pro-Brexit pages and 28 far-right pages had shared QAnon content, receiving 26,000 interactions. One pro-Brexit news account often received thousands of interactions on its QAnon posts, which included false claims about Trump rescuing children from underground tunnels and an introductory video to QAnon for its sometimes confused British followers. A further nine pages analysed were specifically devoted to sharing QAnon news.

A number of QAnon-related posts found a less obvious home on local community Facebook pages, with 23 groups dedicated to a local area in the UK sharing material related to the theory.

Offline, a street movement with links to QAnon has hosted protests in 12 towns and cities across the UK. Most of the events have been organised by Freedom for the Children UK, a Facebook group that has about 12,000 members and was inspired by a US organisation of the same name.

Several of the organisers of the Freedom for the Children events have expressed beliefs in QAnon, according to a report by Hope not Hate..

A spokesperson for Facebook said: This analysis does not reflect either the actions were taking or the policies we have in place to keep people safe on our platform. We remove posts that incite violence; and we recently expanded our policies to specifically address organisations and movements like QAnon

We have since removed 790 groups and 100 pages, and placed restrictions on over 10,000 Instagram accounts.

The effects of Facebooks crackdown, which happened in August, would not be reflected in the Guardian analysis.

Davis said: We always welcome action from Facebook. Recently, theyve removed a lot of harmful content, but its frustrating to see that so much of it is still there. Facebook deleted a few of the major accounts, but its still incredibly easy to find [QAnon content] on there

Its hard to put into words how dangerous this narrative is.

His philosophy in his work is to cleanse, nourish and heal and that is woven through the course material, which he has written and which is accredited by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

Its the latest career evolution for Patrick Murphy, who as the Skin Herbalist, provided his first herbal remedies to his patients back in 1995 with good results.

Then as different ailments emerged in his patients, he would accommodate them by using new herbal formulas, again with marked success. These formulas worked well with subsequent patients that they became standard.

His true philosophy is getting to the root cause of the disorder, helping him to create healing tonic herbals. These herbs help the body overcome disease by strengthening through cleansing and nourishing.

Patricks ultimate vision is to cleanse and nourish so the body can heal, using wild crafted, organic herbs.

The Herbal Academy itself has a comprehensive mission statement.

It aims to empower energy, wellbeing, and confidence, physically and mentally by imparting knowledge of healing, nourishing, and cleansing the body using natural, organic, earth-sourced sustainable herbs and supplements that focus on treating the root causes of ailments rather than just the symptoms.

The Academy offers three courses the Foundation Course; Herbal Home Remedies, and Colour Therapy.

Material on the Foundation Course is aimed to provide the basics in herbalism, that students can recognize and devise effective herbal treatments for themselves and others and to educate themselves in how to use herbal remedies for first aid use and how to use alongside mainstream medical treatments.

Participants will also gain the knowledge of distinguishing between supplements and their properties as well as learning to make their own effective herbal treatments for a range of common ailments including common colds, IBS and various skin conditions.

Those studying Herbal Home Remedies will learn of the herbal remedies available to treat an array of situations such as insomnia, infections, rashes, coughs, digestive issues, stings/bites, bruises, and joint problems amongst many others.

Students will learn to prepare these remedies using a range of fruits, spices, oils, and herbs-all ingredients that are completely natural and have been used and relied on for centuries to promote wellbeing and vitality.

Colour Therapy is used as part of medical practice for hundreds of years, colour therapy is an important element in the holistic approach to complimentary health practice.

In this course, people will identify and understand the need for certain colour themes in their lives and how to use it for healing, good health, relaxation and protection as well as learning how to use this therapy to compliment other therapies such as acupuncture, reflexology and aromatherapy.

The Herbal Academy is delivered completely through online learning. No prior experience is necessary, says Patrick Murphy.

The courses can be accessed on the website instantly and offers a payment plan to spread the cost if needed. Upon completion, students will receive accredited certificates for each course.

We have a special limited time offer in place from now until September 30 if you order the Foundation Herbal Medicine Course, you get the Colour Therapy and Healing for free.

New England Journal of Medicine Publishes Positive Results from Phase 2 WILLOW Study of Brensocatib in Patients with Non-Cystic Fibrosis…

BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Sept. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Insmed Incorporated (Nasdaq:INSM), a global biopharmaceutical company on a mission to transform the lives of patients with serious and rare diseases, today announced that final results from the Phase 2 WILLOW study of brensocatib in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFBE) were published online in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). New data from subgroup analyses of the WILLOW study also were presented today during a late-breaking clinical trials session at the virtual European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2020. Brensocatib is a novel, first-in-class, oral, reversible inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase 1 (DPP1) being developed by Insmed for the treatment of bronchiectasis and other inflammatory diseases.

"We are very pleased that NEJM has recognized the significance of the Phase 2 WILLOW data for patients with NCFBE. These results demonstrate the potential clinical benefits of directly reducing neutrophil-mediated inflammation in bronchiectasisa critical finding for patients who currently suffer from severe outcomes in the absence of an approved therapy," said Martina Flammer, M.D., MBA, Chief Medical Officer of Insmed. "We eagerly anticipate initiating our Phase 3 program for brensocatib in bronchiectasis later this year as we work to bring this urgently needed solution to patients."

The results published today showed that brensocatib significantly prolonged time to first pulmonary exacerbation, the primary endpoint, over the 24-week treatment period for both treatment doses versus placebo (p=0.03 for the 10 mg group; p=0.04 for the 25 mg group). The risk of exacerbation at any time during the trial was reduced by 42% for the 10 mg group versus placebo (HR 0.58, p=0.03) and by 38% for the 25 mg group versus placebo (HR 0.62, p=0.046).

Treatment with brensocatib also reduced the rate of pulmonary exacerbations, a key secondary endpoint. Patients treated with brensocatib experienced a 36% reduction in the 10 mg arm (p=0.04) and a 25% reduction in the 25 mg arm (p=0.17), compared with the placebo arm. In addition, mean concentrations of active neutrophil elastase (NE) in sputum showed dose-dependent reductions compared with placebo over the 24-week treatment period.

Importantly, study results were consistent among subgroups based on age, baseline NE concentrations, prior exacerbation history, bronchiectasis severity index, and lung function.

"The WILLOW study demonstrated that among patients with NCFBE who have a history of frequent exacerbations, treatment with brensocatib significantly prolonged the time to first exacerbation and reduced the risk of exacerbation over the treatment period. Annualized rates of exacerbation were also lower compared to placebo," said lead author James Chalmers, MBChB, Ph.D., Professor and Consultant Respiratory Physician at the School of Medicine, University of Dundee, UK. "These results are critically important given the lack of approved pharmaceutical therapies to reduce the risk of exacerbationthe major driver of morbidity and mortality in patients with bronchiectasis. The results also validate the novel mechanism of action of brensocatib and highlight the potential benefits of reducing neutrophil serine protease activity."

In addition to the results published in NEJM, new data from the WILLOW study were presented today at the ERS International Congress. Subgroup analyses showed that brensocatib consistently prolonged time to first exacerbation and reduced rates of exacerbation among patient subgroups analyzed by baseline disease severity, P. aeruginosa infection, and sputum NE concentration. Further, brensocatib reduced the sputum concentrations of all three neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) assessed (NE, proteinase 3, and cathepsin G).

Brensocatib was generally well-tolerated in the WILLOW study. Rates of adverse events (AEs) leading to drug discontinuation in patients treated with placebo, brensocatib 10 mg, and brensocatib 25 mg were 11%, 7%, and 7%, respectively. The most common AEs in patients treated with brensocatib were cough, headache, sputum increase, dyspnea, infective exacerbation of bronchiectasis, and diarrhea.

Rates of adverse events of special interest (AESIs) in patients treated with placebo, brensocatib 10 mg, and brensocatib 25 mg, respectively, were as follows: rates of skin events (including hyperkeratosis) were 12%, 15%, and 24%; rates of dental events were 4%, 16%, and 10%; and rates of infections considered AESIs were 18%, 14%, and 17%. Hyperkeratosis was reported in 1/85, 3/81, and 1/89 patients treated with placebo, brensocatib 10 mg, and brensocatib 25 mg, respectively. The study included extensive dental evaluations to closely monitor progression of periodontal disease. The results did not raise a signal about dental safety. The percentage of patients with change in periodontal pocket depth 2 mm and absolute value of 5 mm (the threshold of concern for periodontal disease) were 12%, 11%, and 12% for placebo, brensocatib 10 mg, and brensocatib 25 mg, respectively. No skin or dental adverse events were considered serious.

Brensocatib received breakthrough therapy designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in June 2020 for the treatment of adult patients with NCFBE for reducing exacerbations. Insmed plans to initiate a Phase 3 program for brensocatib in bronchiectasis by the end of 2020.

About WILLOW

WILLOW was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multi-center, multi-national, Phase 2 study to assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of brensocatib administered once daily for 24 weeks in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFBE). WILLOW was conducted at 116 sites and enrolled 256 adult patients diagnosed with NCFBE who had at least two documented pulmonary exacerbations in the 12 months prior to screening. Patients were randomized 1:1:1 to receive either 10 mg or 25 mg of brensocatib or matching placebo. The primary efficacy endpoint was the time to first pulmonary exacerbation over the 24-week treatment period in the brensocatib arms compared to the placebo arm.

About Brensocatib

Brensocatib is a small molecule, oral, reversible inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase I (DPP1) being developed by Insmed for the treatment of patients with bronchiectasis. DPP1 is an enzyme responsible for activating neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs), such as neutrophil elastase, in neutrophils when they are formed in the bone marrow. Neutrophils are the most common type of white blood cell and play an essential role in pathogen destruction and inflammatory mediation. In chronic inflammatory lung diseases, neutrophils accumulate in the airways and result in excessive active NSPs that cause lung destruction and inflammation. Brensocatib may decrease the damaging effects of inflammatory diseases such as bronchiectasis by inhibiting DPP1 and its activation of NSPs.

About Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFBE) is a severe, chronic pulmonary disorder in which the bronchi become permanently dilated due to a cycle of infection, inflammation, and lung tissue damage. The condition is marked by frequent pulmonary exacerbations requiring antibiotic therapy and/or hospitalizations. Symptoms include chronic cough, excessive sputum production, shortness of breath, and repeated respiratory infections, which can worsen the underlying condition. NCFBE affects approximately 340,000 to 520,000 patients in the U.S. Today, there are no approved therapies specifically targeting NCFBE in the U.S., Europe, or Japan.

‘Were not your slaves’: Alternative health providers bristle at warning letters about their coronavirus treatments – USA TODAY

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have invested $350 million to fund treatment and vaccine research to fight coronavirus. USA TODAY

Operation Quack Hack, the federal governments initiative to clamp down on fake coronavirus medications and cures, has exposed a health underground in America brimming with distrust not only of mainstream medicinebut the government itself.

Its a Tea Party for COVID-times.

Its members are angry at government warning letters that many perceive as an infringement on their right to free speech, free trade and people's control over their health care and some are ready to fight back.

A common refrain: How can we trust the same government that signed off onopioids?

The most radical believe that wealthy globalists including Bill Gates and Anthony Fauci created the coronavirus, unleashed it from Wuhan, China, along with immune-system-weakening 5G wireless technology; and intend to install digital ID chips in our bodies at the same time they give us the vaccine.

For them, the two agencies behind Operation Quack Hack the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission are sinister organizations. Their objective is to force everyone to take the vaccine, and the only way to do that is to convince ustheres no other choice.

Were not your slaves, were not in your cult, right-wing talk show host Alex Jones shouted in June at an anti-mask rally in Austin. If you want war, you'd better believe you got war.

False claims: Fact check: 'Plandemic' sequel makes false claims about Bill Gates

COVID-5G: https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/covid-19-pseudoscience-technology/how-distrust-and-coinc

Jones got in trouble with the FDA in April for peddling a line of silver products, including silver-laced toothpaste, as a COVID-19 cure.

The majority of alternative health providers that received warning letters are less extreme, but many still think the FDA and FTC are out to get them. The goal as they see it? To protect Big Pharma from competition as their market share grows.

The healthcare system in this country is rigged against inexpensive, safe, and effective natural remedies in favor of expensive pharmaceutical drugs, saidClark Hansen, anaturopathic medical doctor in Arizona,in an email message to USA TODAY. "The US medical system is ignoring any treatment that is not patentable and therefore cannot provide a multi-billion profit for some giant healthcare company.

The FTC warned Hansenin May to stop implying that a combination of elderberry, echinacea and the herb andrographis could prevent coronavirus infection.

In an email to USA TODAY, the FDA said its goalactually isto protect consumers from scammers and products that harm them. The agency added that it doesnt want consumers wasting their time on remedies that may lead to delays in getting proper diagnosis and medical care for COVID-19 and other potentially serious diseases and conditions.

Its sister agency was more succinct.

The FTC has taken aggressive action against marketers who want to take advantage of the anxiety caused by the current health crisis, the agency said in an email. We have done so to prevent consumer injury. There is no other motivation.

Under the law, supplement suppliers are not allowed to use some words "cure," "treat," "prevent," "mitigate" or "diagnose" in promotional materials.

Though many providers openly declare their products wont cure COVID-19, the mention of treat or prevent in the same sentence as "coronavirus" has been enough to trigger a letter from the FTC and FDA.

Recognizing the power of these agencies, mostof the more than 300 companies and individuals that got warning letters have responded by removing or changingmarketing materials on their websites, then they've quietly gotten back to the business of addressing customer ailments.

Theres plenty of money to be made in the herbal remedies and alternative health care market even without a pandemic. Revenueis expected to reach nearly $18 billion in the United States this year, according to IBISWorld, a global economic research firm.

Nevertheless, frustration lies just beneath the surface.

Kate Tietje, who runs the Modern Alternative Mama website and ran afoul of the government for touting Elderberry Elixir, vitamin C and vitamin D as remedies for the coronavirus, had this to say about government regulators in a post she later removed from her website:

Seeing that the FDA allows approved drugs to harm and even kill millions of people, while badgering natural companies that have fewer than 10 reports of unproven adverse effect claims, shows us definitively that its not about keeping people healthy.

Since the onset of the pandemic seven months ago, the FDA and the FTC have sent out an average of 13letters a weekwarning companies and individualsto stop making false claims about their ability to prevent or cure COVID-19.

Many of the recipients have a history of fraud and malfeasance.

They include televangelist JimBakker, who spent five years in prison for defrauding his own ministry back in the 1980s;Gordon Pedersen, who wears a lab coat and stethoscope and calls himself a doctor even though he holds no medical degree; and Matthew Martinez, who agreed to give up his chiropractor'slicense in 2016 after being accused of having sex with clients and suggesting that a patient with multiple sclerosis could be cured by drinking breast milk.

Both Bakker and Pedersen told their followers that Silver Solution was the antidote to COVID-19 and were sued by the government for failing to address allegedly false claims outlined in warning letters.

If the government does not receive an adequate response to its warning letter it can file suit, seek arestraining order to shutdown the company's web sites and operations, commandit to recall and destroy its products and raw materials and refund its customers.

Pedersen refused to participate in court proceedings and could not be reached for comment. Bakker battled back, claiming religious exemption. Court documents filed on his behalf state that his product is a sacrament, as important to his ministry as solicitingdonations and preaching the second coming of Christ.

As for Martinez, the FTC faulted him for claiming that high doses of vitamin C "havea significant impacton treating coronavirus" and that stem cells helpin the healing process. After receiving his warning letter from the FTC, he also boasted that the ultraviolet light in his companys octagon-shaped Blue Room provided virus-killing benefits.

Another warning letter recipient with a history of breaking the law was Richard Marschall. A naturopathic physician, he got busted twice between 2011 and 2017 for introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce and spent 60 days in jail. That didnt stop him from marketing a product called the dynamic duo that he said could crush 30 different viral infections including those in the Corona family.

On Aug. 5, Marschall was indicted for the third time on the same charge: introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce.

An insistence to keep selling supposed coronavirus cures after being told not to is also what got Marc White Eagle Travalino in trouble.

A self-proclaimed medicine man and shaman who runs website and folksy trading post in Fort Davis, Texas, Travalino got nabbed by the FDA for saying his Kolon Kleen, Maska Miakoda and Shar Mar products were proven to work and destroy the coronavirus. Instead of ceasing his marketing activities after receiving his warning letter, he tried to sell more treatments this time to an undercover agent.

The government responded by shutting down all Travalinos operations, both online and brick-and-mortar.

Some coronavirus treatments exposed by Operation Quack Hack were more outlandish.

Face Vital LLC swore by a battery-powered silicon brush used for cleaning facial pores. Mypurmist argued that its hand-held steam machine was the answer. BioElectric Shield offered a golf-ball-sized pendant to block immune-system-sapping 5G electromagnetic waves.

5G appears to be the straw that broke the camels back when it comes to the spread of the Coronavirus, the company said on its website. An extremely intense rollout of 5G was launched initially in Wuhan City, China.

Is it a coincidence that this is also where the coronavirus outbreak started? the company asked. "We are urging you to get protection from EMF radiation."

At least four makers of electric pulse machines, used by chiropractors to reduce muscle tension, stated online that their devices boost the immune system. Electric pulse therapy is like a power up for your cells akin to giving your cells a cup of coffee to energize and speed up their job, said BioBalance, a Maryland-based company.

Three morecompanies suggested sound waves or music could defeat the virus. Musical Medicine, headed by Dr. Suzanne Jonas, advertised new music "designed to boost your immune system. Spooky2 Scalar, a New York company headed by Matt Forrest, said its new sounds would protect you and your family, andBioenergy Wellness in Miami said it had found a COVID-attacking frequency and that sound frequencies were better at penetrating cells than chemicals.

These treatments and others subject to the warning letters have no ability to help anyone with COVID-19, said professor Arthur Caplan, who heads the medical ethics division at the NYU School of Medicine.

Arthur L. Caplan Ph.D. of New York University's Langone Medical Center.(Photo: John Abbott Photography)

Theyre just emptying our pockets for their own gain and greed, he said.

Caplan added that if companies receiving warning letters had any real virus fighting abilities, Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, would be talking about them on TV.

If Im going to bet on the future, Caplan said. Im still betting on the infectious disease guys over the vitamin purveyors to work our way out of this,

Peddling potions, balmsand tinctures for ailments asvaried as erectile disfunction and Parkinson's disease, alternative health providers targeted by Operation Quack Hack do most of their business over the Internet.

About four in 10 also operate naturopathic, holistic, acupuncture or chiropractic clinics where practitioners meet with clients to help with pain management or plan healthy alternatives for living on an increasingly toxic planet.

For nearly a third, go-to products for fighting coronavirus virus have been simple the kind of thing any mother might suggest to ward off the flu: vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc. Another 26% offered some mixture of herbs or essential oils that might include elderberries, echinacea, ginger, garlic, licorice, turmeric, peppermint, astragalus root, reishi mushrooms, blackseed oil, olive leaf, dandelion.

In a nod to the New Testament, some even recommend frankincense and myrrh.

Corey Basch, associate professor in the Department of Public Health at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., said that vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients are a needed element for maintaining health, including immune function.

But its not always clear for whom these supplements will work and under what circumstances. To Basch and others, that alone justifies the government clamping down on those thatmake a definitive statement about the a cure or treatment forCOVID-19.

They need to have competent scientific evidence that something works and no one has that, said Mitchell Katz, spokesman for the FTC.

Alternative health care providers say that doesnt mean they should be silenced. Thats where Dr. David Brownstein, who believes in the basic mission of the FDA and FTC, says the two agencies have gone too far.

Dr. David Brownstein, of West Bloomfield MI, a AARM member.(Photo: Steven M. Herppich)

A medical doctor who got interested in holistic medicine nearly 30 years ago when his father was suffering from heart disease, Brownstein said he found a new way of looking at health care less centered on medications than on treatments that support the immune system.

Brownstein said one of his patients gave him a book on nutrition, which led him to wean his father off nitroglycerin pills in favor of natural supplements. Within 30 days, he said, his fathers cholesterol fell from 300 to 200, his 20-year history of angina endedand his skin turned from pasty gray to pink.

That led Brownstein to seek out natural therapies for his patients, including an anti-viral strategy that he regularly turns to during flu season. The regimen involves high doses of vitamins A, C, D and iodine for four days, followed, if necessary, by nebulizer treatments of hydrogen peroxide and iodine, then intravenous treatments of hydrogen peroxide, vitamin C and ozone.

Brownstein said he used the same regimen every year for more than 20 yearsand on more than 100 COVID-19 patients during the outbreak in the Detroit suburbs in March and April.

My partners, nurses and I were going out to see patients in their cars in the parking lot in 30-degree weather in March, Brownstein said. We were giving them IVs in their cars, and as soon as we started treating them they got better. We saw 107 patients. Only one was hospitalized. No one died and no one had to be ventilated.

Instead of drawing praise, Brownstein said he got in trouble with the FTC for posting the results of his 107-person study on his website and including YouTube testimonials from patients who recovered. Brownstein said the FTC faulted his study because it wasnt randomized, meaning he had no untreated control group.

I just couldnt sleep at night if I did that, he said. How could I not have people receive a therapy that I thought could help them?

Dr. Brownstein administering to patients during the onset of the pandemic in April.(Photo: Courtesy)

Brownsteins study was peer-reviewed by three medical doctors and an academicand contained more than 90 citations to scholarly articles and texts. But the FTC still made him pull it off his website. The cost of doing that, he said, is that the general public and fellow doctors around the world didnt get the benefit of what he saw on the front lines of the crisis.

It sends a chill out that you cant report anything about COVID thats positive, Brownstein said. You cant report anything that doesnt fit the narrative that all you can do is wear a mask, social-distance and wait for a vaccine.

The pushback against the governments orders is that they represent an unnecessary overstep against alternative health companies that are doing no harmand may even be providing peace of mind at a difficult time.

Rosalee De la Foret, a best-selling author and herbalist, acknowledged that regulators had a legal right to cite her for mentioning the forbidden word "prevent" in promotional materials about herbal products. But she believes the FDA and FTC are too heavy-handed in applying the law.

Best selling author and herbalist Rosalee De la Foret(Photo: Courtesy)

De la Foret, who mentioned the benefits of an herb called astragalus in one of her articles, maintained that she was very careful to point out that the root was not a cure forCOVID-19 or anything else.

I was trying to be open and honest, De la Foret said. But they were saying that I was wink wink implying that the product could be used to cure the virus.

That interpretation, De la Foret said, prevents people from discussing remedies that might be useful.

Heaven forbid that something in nature might be more effective than a drug, agreedHansen, the Arizona naturopathic doctor.

Ralph Fucetola, a retired lawyer and co-trustee of the Natural Solutions Foundation, also echoed that sentiment.

This Deep State attack on good medicine is particularly outrageous because during a declared pandemic it is ethical, according to the (World Health Organization), to use even unapproved remedies that may offer help, Fucetola said in an article posted in April on OpenSourceTruth.com, a website that pushesback against the mass media. Once again, the Federal authorities are putting themselves squarely against common sense in order to maintain the fiction that the government is here to help.

Ralph Fucetola(Photo: Courtesy)

Fucetola told USA TODAY that theres a distinction between treatment ofa disease, which drug companies provide, and therapies that may benefit a patient, which alternative health companies offer.

Theyre trying to subject us to the treatment of disease standard, Fucetola said. People in the health freedom world, in the natural remedies world, are not trying to treat diseases, were trying to help people achieve a healthy status.

Fucetola said he still hopes to reach an understanding with the FDA and FTC regarding what can be said about Nano Silver, a nutrient he says supports a healthy immune system.

Like most other alternative health providers, he has taken down all allegedly offending documents from his website.Even Jones, the founder of Info Wars, has taken steps to comply.

But some letter recipients, including televangelist JimBakker, silver solution salesman Gordon Pederson non-religious church founder Mark Grenon, and investigative journalist Maryam Henein, are defiant.

Investigative journalist Maryam Henein, who edited the movie "Vanishing of the bees."(Photo: Courtesy)

Henein, who directed the filmVanishing of the Beesand foundedHoneyColony.com, a natural-remedies website, said she drew a warning letter by suggesting that the best coronavirus treatment is prevention and recommending that customers take chelated silver, vitamin C and magnesium.

I know in my heart I did not do anything wrong Henein told USA TODAY. The FDA and FTC are using the coronavirus to attack natural remedies. Theres a reason we call them the medical mafia.

So far, the FDA and FTC have ignored Henein because she made required changes to her website, but they went after Pedersen and Grenon when bothmen refused to play by the rules.

Sued in late April and accused of tryingto defraud consumers by claiming his liquid silver product will destroy all forms of viruses, Pedersen declined to accept any mail from the U.S. attorneys office andchose to represent himself as a sovereign citizen.

He declared that the court had no jurisdiction over him as a private living, flesh and blood man.

U.S.attorneys swiftly responded by persuading the court to impose a restraining order and then shut down Pedersons websites. That, in turn, persuaded Pedersens partners to push him out of his company and agree to reimburse any customers who believed they had been defrauded.

Grenon, who declined to talk to USA TODAY, deployed similar tactics, refusing to recognize the authority of the U.S. government over Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, which offered church members Miracle Mineral Solution a bleach-like substance as a sacrament, in return for donations.

Mark Grenon(Photo: YouTube)

He went further, too, threatening the government and the judge presiding over his case.

In July, law enforcement officials raided his familys headquarters and distribution facility in Bradenton, Florida. They arrested two of his sons, Jonathan and Jordan, who are still being held without bail. They seized cash and goldfrom the company safeand carted off all the companys computers, electronic equipment, files and documents. They also confiscated all raw materials used to make MMS.

Grenon, who was at his familys compound in Colombia at the time of the raid, said in a Youtube video interview with Henein that hes determined to face his accusers. He's certain he will prevail.

Experts say his legal position is not enviable. Its not a good idea to get in a fight with the FDA and the FTC, they say, no matter how righteous you think your cause.

Theyre like the IRS, said Caplan, the NYU medical ethics professor. Flout them, challenge them, dont cooperate and they come down hard.

'Were not your slaves': Alternative health providers bristle at warning letters about their coronavirus treatments - USA TODAY

How the Germans Invented the Invention – The Berlin Spectator

The Germans have invented so much, their complete series of inventions would create a list so long it would have to be invented first. With all of those inventions it is safe to say the Germans invented the invention.

This is not even about the obvious stuff, such as the wall plug or the bratwurst, but even more useful things or characters like the Easter Bunny or the Fahrenheit temperature scale. Mr. T. Scale was a smart fellow. Yes, we were only testing your attention. The inventor was actually Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. All of these conversions. Its all his fault.

Homeopathy and Aspirin

How about the universal medication called Aspirin? It helps people get through colds, it keeps fever down and decreases pain. When given shortly after death, it decreases the risk of a heart attack. Aspirin probably works against everything. It might even cure a terrible taste in music.

Samuel Hahnemann from the town of Meissen developed alternative medicine by coming up with Homeopathy. Hahnemann lived from 1755 to 1843 and tested his plant-based medication on himself. By the way: There is a Hahnemann statue in Washington D.C., not so far from Dupont Circle.

Aloysius Alzheimer, another German, discovered What did he discover again? Yes, we know Alzheimer and dementia are usually not funny at all. It is tough for those affected and their families and friends.

Merkel Cells and Cocaine

Walter Bruch invented a so-called color encoding system for analogue television called PAL. Yes, my TV set uses PAL, pal. It became the European format, while most of America uses a system called NTSC. What in the hell is the difference? No clue.

Germany even invented Merkel Cells, seriously. Those are oval-shaped mechanoreceptors essential for light touch sensation and found in the skin of vertebrates, according to Wiki. Sure. Friedrich Sigmund Merkel is the inventor. And no, he is not related, as far as we know.

Related Articles (This piece continues below.)

Cocaine is another useful German invention. Thats what Pablo Escobar, George Jung and many others must have thought while weighing their Dollar bills, but not those who were exploited, threatened or even killed for or by that stuff. Friedrich Gaedcke first isolated cocaine alkaloid in 1855. Shortly after, it was used for medication.

Diesel Scandal and Marxism

Konrad Zuse, a Berliner by birth, invented the first programmable computer, the Z3. It became operational in May 1941, during WW II. The Nazis supported Zuses work. Because of Nazi Germanys terror, the news about the first computer hardly spread at the time.

The list of German inventions is much longer than this. It includes the Frankfurter sausage, the rocket, Marxism, the Geiger Counter, the Teddy Bear, the Settlers of Catan board game, the Diesel engine, Diesel fuel and the Diesel Scandal. Thanks, Rudolf Diesel. The Germans invented the car, obviously, the motorcycle and something called health insurance.

The MPEG Audio Layer III was invented by Germanys Fraunhofer Institute in 1989. The problem was that nobody needed that compression format back then. A few years later, things looked better. The entire world knows and uses MPEG Audio Layer III, a.k.a. mp3, today.

Porsche 911 and Morphine

Decades before, in 1928, the German-American inventor Fritz Pfleumer introduced paper tape with oxide power. It was the first step towards magnetic tape that was used for audio recordings a lot. Nazi Germany developed the Magnetophon recorder for that purpose. The Allies grabbed two of those machines in Luxemburg during the war.

Robert Bunsen invented the Bunsen Burner we all know from our chemistry classes. His colleagues Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll came up with the electron microscope. The contact lens is a German invention too. Everything is, it seems.

Oh yes, the anti-tank missile, morphine, the Porsche 911, the printing press, adhesive tape, the hole puncher, recyclable paper and radioactive toothpaste (seriously) are German inventions as well. And oxygen. What people breathed before Carl Wilhelm Scheele discovered it in the 18th century is a mystery.

How the Germans Invented the Invention - The Berlin Spectator

Obituary: Orville Pung, who advocated for humane incarceration and drug treatment, served as corrections commissioner to three governors -…

In the late 1980s, when a national crack-cocaine epidemic inspired get-tough-on-crime political movements left and right, Orville Pung had other ideas.

Among them: acupuncture. Pung, a cigar-chomping straight talker who served as the Minnesota Commissioner of Corrections from 1982 to 1993, told the Pioneer Press he believed alternative medicine could help crack addicts beat their addiction, an effort aimed at treating the whole prisoner rather than merely locking them up.

Those and other strategies designed to rethink incarceration as a purely punitive tool resonated on both sides of the political aisle, especially when his approaches were proven to save taxpayers money. When Republican Gov. Arne Carlson was elected to office in 1990, he asked Pung who had served DFL Gov. Rudy Perpich and Republican Gov. Al Quie before him to stay on.

That wouldnt happen today, because of politics, said longtime friend Dan Cain. Orv was the best thing that ever happened to Minnesota corrections.

Pung, a restorative justice advocate and high-ranking corrections official to three governors, died Monday surrounded by family at the Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater. He had suffered a stroke complicated by Parkinsons disease and dementia, a week shy of his 84th birthday.

Pung is survived by his wife Nadine, four children, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

His son Rick Pung recalled how he insisted against installing a modern bathroom in his cabin in northern Wisconsin because, in his view, using an outhouse installed fortitude in the grand-kids.

The one thing my dad instilled in us was how he saw people, no matter who they were, said his daugher, Ann Pung-Terwedo. He always looked for the good in people and always encouraged helping them to move forward in education. And he instilled with us the value of family and hard work.

Pung became an assistant Department of Corrections Commissioner in the mid-1970s, during a tumultuous era for the nations prison system, which had seen riots, scandals and upheaval.

He started as a teacher in 1958 at a state training institution for boys, and by 1974 was superintendent of the facility, located in Red Wing.

As the top corrections official in the 1980s and 1990s, Pung advocated for Sentence to Serve alternatives to incarceration, which offered convicts the chance to work road crews or put out sandbags in advance of floods.

He believed in second chances, said Cain, who retired as director of the RS Eden sober housing, drug rehab and prisoner re-entry program in February. He instilled that in the people who worked for him.

Pung relieved state prison overcrowding by using abandoned state hospitals to hold minimum-security prisoners. He also resisted double-bunking prisoners, or putting more than one prisoner in a single cell.

Not all of his stances went over well in St. Paul. In 1990, Pung supported efforts by a nonprofit to study the feasibility of acquiring a motel at University and Prior avenues and convert it into a minimum-security facility for non-violent criminals, most likely women. The position put him at odds with neighborhood advocates.

By the end of the century, he was openly critical of key aspects of the so-called War on Drugs.

Largely due to enforcement and judicial response to drugs, particularly crack cocaine, a black man is now 19 times more likely than a white man to go to a Minnesota prison, wrote Pung, in a corrections retrospective published in 1999.

By consciously deciding to imprison three times as many citizens as we did two decades ago, have we made things proportionately better? he wrote. Are we safer?

Richard Mulcrone, a former probation officer who once served as chairman of the first full-time paroling authority in Minnesota, worked for Pung for years in state corrections.

He said Pung would welcome some of the present-day debate over the purpose of jail, prisons and corrections, including the increased public scrutiny.

Pung felt we shouldnt consider it an invasion of our privacy, we should consider it an opportunity to tell our story, Mulcrone said. He was a good teacher.

Throughout his 35 years in the states corrections system, Pung advocated for more spending on education and victim services, including battered womens programs, in the hopes of cutting off crime before it escalates.

Pung noted in his 1999 article how even territorial prisons that opened prior to Minnesotas statehood offered the inmates enrollment in night school.

The job that any prison has got to face is to make somebody less dangerous than when they came in, and theres no role for that like education, said Pung, quoted in the Pioneer Press in 2016.

Funeral arrangements will be conducted by Simonet Funeral Home in Stillwater and St. Michaels Church in Stillwater.

New evidence testosterone therapy is effective obesity treatment in men – New Atlas

New data presented at the recent European and International Congress on Obesity suggests testosterone therapy may be a helpful treatment for some men suffering from obesity. The research finds long-term testosterone therapy can, in some cases, be as effective as bariatric surgery in morbidly obese subjects.

Low testosterone levels have consistently been detected in severely obese men, and obesity has also been noted as a common symptom of hypogonadism, a clinically diagnosed condition where men cannot produce average levels of testosterone. This complicated bidirectional relationship between obesity and low testosterone has been referred to as a vicious cycle by some researchers.

Farid Saad, from the UAEs Gulf Medical University School of Medicine, has been investigating the relationship between testosterone and obesity for over a decade. His latest research examines 15 years of data from a German registry tracking men with hypogonadism.

Saad and his colleagues looked at data from 471 obese men with hypogonadism, 276 of whom received long-term testosterone therapy, while 195 chose not to undergo hormone treatments, thus serving as a functional control group.

Across a follow-up period of about eight years, the data shows the testosterone group dropping 23 kg (50 lb) in weight, on average. The men in the control group not receiving testosterone therapy showed an average increase in weight of 6 kg (13 lb).

Waist circumference, body mass index, and visceral fat measurements all improved in the testosterone group compared to the control. Even more strikingly, the overall mortality rate of the testosterone group was significantly lower than the control by the end of the follow-up period: 7.6 percent vs 32.3 percent. Plus, over 20 percent of men in the control group developed type 2 diabetes across the study period, whereas no men in the testosterone group developed the metabolic disorder over the same timeframe.

"Long-term testosterone therapy in hypogonadal men resulted in profound and sustained weight loss which may have contributed to reductions in mortality and cardiovascular events, says Saad. Untreated men with hypogonadism gained weight."

Zooming in on those most obese subjects, the researchers found 76 men could be classified in the highest risk class 3 category of obesity. This category is occasionally referred to as morbid obesity, and bariatric surgery is often recommended as an effective treatment.

Of the 76 men in this category, 59 received testosterone therapy, and the remaining 17 served as controls. In this sub-group, the testosterone cohort lost an average of 30 kg (66 lb), while the control group gained an average of 5 kg (11 lb). Saad notes the weight loss and general metabolic improvements seen in this morbidly obese cohort following long-term testosterone therapy resemble benefits seen with bariatric surgery, suggesting this may be a useful alternative treatment option.

"Long-term testosterone therapy in men with hypogonadism and the most severe level of obesity resulted in profound and sustained weight loss in a magnitude comparable to that achieved with metabolic (obesity) surgery, says Saad. Side effects and complications may be in favor of testosterone therapy.

These results of course need broader validation before testosterone therapy can be widely recommended as a treatment for obesity in men. The data gathered in this new research is limited to a very specific cohort of older men with clinically diagnosed hypogonadism.

The new research was recently presented at the European and International Congress on Obesity.

A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to the Treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea – Physician’s Weekly

For a paper published in Pain Medicine, my colleagues and I developed a mind-body intervention, based on principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), for young women with moderate-to-severe primary dysmenorrhea (PD; menstrual pain without an identified medical cause). As the most common gynecological complaint and leading cause of school and work absences in reproductive-age girls and women, menstrual pain is an important public health issue. First-line treatment approaches for PD include NSAIDs and hormonal contraceptives. However, these approaches have limitations. A recent study found as many as 18% of women with menstrual pain did not experience sufficient relief with NSAIDs. Additionally, NSAIDs and hormonal contraceptives come with the risk of significant side effects and may be intolerable for many. Because CBT is a widely used, evidence-based approach for treating chronic pain, we believe that patients with menstrual pain may benefit from learning similar skills. We utilized CBT principles in the development of a five-session, group treatment for menstrual pain.

The goals of this study were to determine whether the intervention was both feasible and acceptable to girls with menstrual pain and to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention on menstrual pain and other psychological variables. Feasibility was defined as at least 75% of participants attending at least three of five sessions, and acceptability was measured by a questionnaire administered at the end of the first session following an explanation of the rationale for the study. Efficacy was assessed by comparing pre-treatment self-reported menstrual pain ratings on a 0-10 scale to ratings made at post-treatment and follow-up. Additional self-report measures of somatization, depression, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing were also included at all assessments. All enrollees received the treatment in one of four group cohorts during the approximately 1-year study.

The group intervention was both feasible and acceptable to participants. Most importantly, participants reported significantly lower menstrual pain ratings at 3- and 12-month follow-up compared with pre-treatment, despite no changes in self-reported medication use. Only pain catastrophizing significantly improved over follow-up, while somatization, depression, and anxiety remained unchanged from pre-treatment. These findings suggest that a cognitive-behavioral approach to pain management is a viable and effective non-drug alternative to traditional pharmaceutical treatments for girls and women with menstrual pain. The improvement in pain catastrophizing suggests that this construct may be a potential mechanism of pain reduction. Because pain catastrophizing is often associated with chronic pain conditions and is a cognitive risk factor for future pain problems, teaching participants skills to modify catastrophic thoughts about pain may be a critical target of treatment.

Physicians, including pain specialists, should specifically ask patients about their experiences with menstrual pain to assess the degree to which it is problematic. It may be worth considering referring patients for CBT for menstrual pain (or even CBT for non-specific pain), particularly for those who do not tolerate or find sufficient relief from pharmaceutical approaches. Most importantly, it is crucial to have an open dialogue with patients about menstrual pain to help find effective treatment approaches and challenge the antiquated belief that girls and women just have to live with it.

While menstrual pain research is of great importance, there remains much to learn. Standard treatment approaches may work for the majority of girls and women, but a significant number will remain impaired and in pain. Future research should continue to evaluate non-drug treatments for PD in randomized controlled trials and improve the rigor and quality of trials testing alternative therapies (eg, acupuncture, herbs, supplements). Additionally, exploring mechanisms of symptom improvement may lead to a better understanding of the various factors contributing to girls and womens experiences of menstrual pain, so that personalized medicine approaches can be developed. When we are able to move away from a one size fits all approach, we will be able to reduce suffering and improve the lives of patients with this common and disabling pain condition.

Alternative treatment for osteoarthritis | Alternative treatments – Medical News Bulletin

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. Previously thought of as simple wear-and-tear type of arthritis, it is now recognized as a complex, progressive disease that affects the joints resulting in the breakdown of the joint cartilage and the underlying bone. Alternative treatments for osteoarthritis are being increasingly researched as strategies to manage this condition.

The hands and fingers, knees, hips, spine, and big toe are the most commonly affected joints. Symptoms of osteoarthritis include a limited range of motion, aching pain, weakness, stiffness, joint deformities, and morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes. Osteoarthritis pain progressively worsens in its later stages.

There are two types of osteoarthritis:

Since there is no cure for osteoarthritis, the main treatment goals are pain control and quality-of-life improvements. Management and treatment options are based on the severity of symptoms.

Non-drug therapies include, but are not limited to:

Drug therapies include, but are not limited to:

Research on Boswellia and its extracts have shown significant activity to combat inflammatory and arthritic diseases. Studies have shown that an active compound from Boswellia inhibits the inflammatory action caused by the enzyme, arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase. Clinical trials have reported that Boswellia and its extracts are relatively safe.

A review of seven studies investigated findings on the relief and improvement of pain, stiffness, and joint function using Boswellia as an alternative treatment for osteoarthritis. All seven studies utilized specific osteoarthritis pain rating scales and questionnaires to determine relief and improvement, such as the Visual Analog Score (VAS) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC).

The seven studies accounted for a total of 545 adults between 40 to 80 years old. All participants received either one of the following treatments for a duration of four or 12 weeks:

The review reported that Boswellia and its extracts may improve pain, stiffness, and joint function compared to placebo or western medicine, making it a promising alternative treatment for osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, the review discovered that all seven studies had either unclear (86%) or high (57%) risk of bias. The risk of bias means that the study variations make it difficult for researchers to make consistent and solid conclusions. The unclear and high risk of bias stemmed from poor reporting of study procedures, such as randomization, allocation concealment, participant/researcher blinding, selective reporting and incorrect calculation of statistics.

Although Boswellia and its extracts seem safe, the safety data remains unclear with no reported side effects in Boswellia nor placebo treatment, from three out of seven studies. According to the authors, The absence of information on adverse events does not mean that the intervention [Boswellia] is safe.

This was the first study to provide a recommended dosage and duration of Boswellia and its extract, with 100 to 250 mg daily for four weeks. Boswellias safety and effectiveness as an alternative treatment for osteoarthritis requires further studies with larger population sizes, standardized dosing preparations, dosage outside of 100-250mg, and longer treatment durations.

Djokovic has a Federer moment at the US Open – Moneycontrol.com

Life has come full circle for Novak Djokovic. By getting defaulted from the US Open, the World No. 1 lost a title that was his for the taking. Just like Roger Federer at Wimbledon 2019, when Federer squandered two match points against, well, Djokovic.

At that time, people said of Federer, How could he? How could such a great player, a mere one stroke from victory, on his own serve, let it slip? Many of them were Djokovic fans. They mocked Federer as they savoured their mans lucky escape.

And now, just about a year later, the same question is being asked of Djokovic. How could he? How could such an experienced player do something so stupid, if not intentional, as smack a ball in disgust towards a linesperson, despite being aware of the rules and risks? How could an otherwise charming player, who invites ballkids to sit with him during rain breaks, do something so careless?

We are not nave. We know people have contradictions and mistakes happen. But the thing is, Djokovics costly swipe at the ball wasnt his first demonstration of anger in the match. Moments earlier, he had slammed one hard in the sideboards. At that moment, he could have warned himself. Calm down, if someone gets hit, you could be kicked out of the tournament. Curse, scream, break your racquet. But dont do anything where the racquet or ball hit another person. The rules are clear about that.

And now Djokovic, his team and admirers are feeling what the Federer camp felt after last years Wimbledon the agony of losing a major title when it was almost a done deal.

Facepalm season

Its been a season of blunders and stress for Djokovic. First, he expressed opposition to the idea of mandatory COVID vaccination by the tennis body, which was seen as insensitive in some quarters. Then in June, he organised an ill-advised exhibition tournament named Adria Tour in Croatia. Spectators packed the stands. Players hugged and danced at a party and played basketball with no distancing. Djokovics intentions were noble. He wanted to do something good for players and the public during the bleak days of the coronavirus. But it proved to be a disaster. Several people, including Djokovic and his wife Jelena, tested positive for the virus. Djokovic was widely criticized and spent precious time and energy explaining his actions and apologizing.

But then he took the brave call of travelling to the US for the US Open, never hiding his motivation to dislodge Federer from the tennis peak (Federer has 20 Grand Slams, Nadal 19 and Djokovic 17). When Djokovic won the Cincinnati Masters in the run-up to the US Open, the Adria Tour fiasco seemed behind him and he seemed on course for Major No. 18.

Djokovic, however, once again made a surprising decision to announce, right in the middle of a major tournament, that he was forming a new players association. Top players do not usually take on tiring parallel responsibilities during big tournaments, let alone talk about them. Unlike the Adria Tour, there was nothing objectionable about the players association. But Djokovic had to answer questions about it during press conferences, at a time when he needed to focus solely on the US Open. Finally came the moment of madness on Sunday when his absently slapped ball, to his absolute horror, hit a lineswoman.

Most temperamental of the Big 3, also the funniest

There is little to separate Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in terms of achievements. But Djokovic can be the most entertaining as well as the most temperamental of the elite trio. His impersonations of players and practical jokes are hilarious. At the same time, despite his greatness and success, his calm seems brittle. Things get to him more than they do to Federer or Nadal, and the hitherto invulnerable game starts to unravel. At the US Open, he was at times bellowing in anger even when he was winning.

Djokovics training, regimen and diet are painstakingly drawn from modern science as well as alternative medicine. Among other things, he believes a persons emotions can change the molecular structure of the water he or she drinks. Djokovic also famously turned his career around by going gluten-free. At last years US Open, he carried an oxygen chamber to the grounds.

COVID-19 Impact on Medical Wellness Market Surge at 5.4% CAGR to 2025 - Galus Australis

Coronavirus live updates: Pfizer says vaccine may be ready by end of October; infected Big Ten athletes have heart inflammation – USA TODAY

COVID-19 widespread testing is crucial to fighting the pandemic, but is there enough testing? The answer is in the positivity rates. USA TODAY

Amid reports that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is telling some health officials around the country to be ready to start distributing a coronavirus vaccine by November, the chairman and CEO of Pfizer said Thursday that the company may have an effective vaccine by the end of October.

That timeline is "conceivable" but not likely,Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, told CNN Thursday.

Meanwhile, higher education continuesto grapple with the impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Penn State University director of athletic medicine raised alarms when he reported that about one-third of Big Ten athletes who tested positive for the coronavirus also appear to have inflammation of the heart muscle, or myocarditis, a potentially fatal condition.

In addition, nearly 800 students at the University of Georgia tested positive for COVID-19 or reported positive tests last week, the first full week of classes, and the university has set aside or rented nearly 500 rooms on and off campus for students in quarantine or isolation.Iowa State University onWednesday reversed its decision to allow 25,000 fans to its home-opening footballgame, and 30 out of 40 Greek houses at Indiana University-Bloomington were asked to quarantine after a spike in cases.

Some universities, however, are staying the course. University of South Carolina officials said they hadno plans of shutting down campus even after reporting more than 1,000 confirmed cases among students.

Some significant developments:

Today's numbers:A USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Wednesday shows three statesMinnesota, South Dakota and West Virginiaset records for new cases in a week while two statesArkansas and West Virginiahad a record number of deaths in a week. The U.S. has 6.1 million confirmed cases and over 186,000 deaths. Globally, there are 26million cases and more than 864,000 people have died.

What we're reading:Operation Quack Hack, the federal governments initiative to clamp down on fake coronavirus medications and cures, has exposed a health underground in America brimming with distrust not only of mainstream medicine but the government itself. Read more here.

The possible link between COVID-19 and a potentially fatal inflammation of the heart muscle detected on Big Ten athletes seems to validate the conference's decision to postpone fall sports amid the pandemic, at the same timeraising questions about the safety of student-athletes in other leagues that are choosing to play.

Major concerns were raised when Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, Penn State'sdirector of athletic medicine, made the revelation at a meeting of the State College Area school board of directors, saying that information contributed to the Big Ten and Pac-12 postponing the fall seasons. The other Power Five conferences -- the SEC, ACC and Big 12 -- have decided to play.

When we looked at our COVID-positive athletes, whether they were symptomatic or not, 30 to roughly 35 percent of their heart muscles [are] inflamed, Sebastianelli said. And we really just dont know what to do with it right now.''

Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency physician and former sideline doctor for the New York Jets, says it may be time to put all fall sports on hold, pointing out the danger myocarditis presents.

"We need to reconsider allowing all professional, collegiate as well as school sports at all levels from going forward this fall,'' Glatter said. "I believe we need to wait until a viable vaccine is available beforewe can safely allow organized sports at all levels of competition to proceed.''

The chairman and CEO of Pfizer said Thursday the company may have an effective coronavirus vaccine by the end of October.

"We may be able to say the product is safe and efficacious in the October time frame and submit immediately for approval and authorization,"Dr. Albert Bourla told the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations in a virtual meeting.

Bourla said the U.S.-based company, which is developing its vaccine in partnership with German biotechnology company BioNTech, has enrolled 23,000 participants in its Phase 3 clinical trial and aims to enroll 30,000 total. A "significant number"of participants have already started getting the second dose of the experimental vaccine, Bourla said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, meanwhile, has told some state health officials to prepare to distribute the vaccine "in the near future."

Providers of alternative medicines and treatment are mobilizing against the federal government in its attempt to stamp out fake cures against the coronavirus. They are angry about government warning letters that they believe infringe on their right to free speech, free trade and people's control over their health care. And they've got a strong argument in fighting back: How can we trust the same government that signed off on opioids?

The backlash follows Operation Quack Hack, the federal governments initiative to clamp down on fake coronavirus medications and cures.

The health care system in this country is rigged against inexpensive, safeand effective natural remedies in favor of expensive pharmaceutical drugs, said Clark Hansen, a naturopathic medical doctor in Arizona, in an email message to USA TODAY.

Latinos, Blacks and recent immigrants, who fill eight out of 10 of the nation's front-line meatpacking jobs, now account for 90% of the meatpacking-related coronavirus cases, based on an analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A two-month project by the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting and USA TODAY looking at data from 21 states foundthe government has taken an even more hands-off approach to employee safety even as workers' and activists' calls forbasic safety measures were met with months of inaction and indifference.

Heather Schlitz, Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting

Speeding and traffic fatalities are both up in Vermont, and law enforcement officials think they know the reason: fewer cops to enforce traffic laws because of the coronavirus.

The state has seen 43 traffic deaths so far this year, up from 21 at the same point last year. And125 lead-footed motorists were cited for speeding faster than 99 miles per hour through Sept. 1, up from 107 during the same period last year, reports the Barre Montpelier Times Argus.

Though there appears to be no single reason for the increase, the coronavirus could be a factor for having thinned the number of law enforcement officers on the highways

When you drive around, people seem to be speeding more. They seem to be looking at their phones more. They do not see law enforcement out as much as they used to, Bill Jenkins of the state Highway Safety Office said. I think some people, unfortunately, got the message that they could do things that they shouldnt be doing.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, is warning Canadians to practice safe behaviors with their sex lives amid the pandemic.

"Sexual health is an important part of our overall health. However, sex can be complicated in the time of COVID-19, especially for those without an intimate partner in their household or whose sexual partner is at higher risk for COVID-19,"Tam said in a statement.

Among the measures that Tam suggested Canadians take to avoid their risk: Wearing a mask if they do have sex andavoiding kissing. "The most important step is to establish a trusting relationship with your sexual partner," Tam added.

More than 833,000 Americans sought unemployment assistance last week as parts of the economy remained shuttered because ofCOVID-19 and millions of out-of-work people have gone more than a month without the additional $600 in jobless aid.

About 833,352 Americans filed first-time applications for unemployment insurance during the week ending Aug. 29, the Labor Department said Thursday, a 7,591 rise from the prior week and slightly more than the 825,000 expected by economists at J.P. Morgan. Those figures are based on non-seasonally adjusted figures.

The Dow fell more than 800 points Thursday, offsetting big gains the previous day.It was the worst day for stocks since June.

Stocks on Wednesday soared, with the S&P 500 the broadest measure of Wall Street and the Nasdaq hitting highs. The Nasdaq had also climbed above 12,000 points for the first time in history Wednesday.

Experts said the sudden downturn came amid a steep drop in tech companies' stocks brought the rest of the market lower.

Filming on the movie "The Batman" starring Robert Pattinson was stoppedafter a member of the U.K. production team tested positive for COVID-19.

The shoot at Warner Bros. studio in Hertfordshire, England, came to a halt after resuming production three days ago. It is being directed by Matt Reeves.Production of "The Batman" was originally shut down in March by the coronavirus crisis.

Florida's largest school district has been plagued with outages and cyberattacks as it reopens virtually amid the pandemic.

Students and teachers in recent days have both said they can't access the online platform used by Miami-Dade County schools, the Miami Herald reported. Moreover, Ron Steiger, thedistricts chief financial officer, said Wednesday thata $15.3 million contract with the online platform at the center of the crisis was missing the signature of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

District officials have determined the cyberattackers have demanded no ransom, and some of the attacks came from outside the U.S.

On Wednesday night, an email was sent to all secondary school teachers asking them to use Microsoft Teams and Zoom until Sept. 11. The district will then assess if grades six through 12 will use the platform beginning Sept. 14 or stick with Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

A new study suggests the COVID-19 pandemic has generated fears that are likely to dampen risk-taking and economic output for decades.

The crisis has increasedthe perceived probability of an extreme, negative shock in the future, and over time, the economic cost of that warier outlook is many times larger than the short-term damage, the study says.

The study, released at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas Citys annual conference last week, attempts to quantify such long-term economic losses by assessing the toll taken by other economic upheavals, such as the Great Recession of 2007-09.

More than 1,000 students at the University of South Carolina have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the university's dashboard. ButPresidentRobert Caslen on Wednesday said he has no plans of shutting down the school, The State newspaper reported.

We do not have any plans to close, Caslen said during a virtual town hall. The last thing I want to do is take this university, shut it down and dump the problem on the city of Columbia. I prefer to work through this if I can.

One way school officials plan to do so is by testing more students. "We want to find them, we want to take care of them and we want to get them back into the classroom," he said.

Also in South Carolina, Furman University suspended theKappa Alpha fraternity for at least four years after it hosted parties that helped spread the virus. Nearly 60% of those who attended the events on Aug. 21 and 22 at least 29 students tested positive for the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, other universities are pausing their in-person reopening plans ascases spike on their campuses. Here is the latest:

Its more and more likely the nation wont have enough teachers to staff schools even once reopening is safe amid the public health and economic crises caused by the pandemic, experts say.

A potential exodus of older educators susceptible to the coronavirus and those with existing health problems may fuel already high turnover.

Many substitutes also may quit. Now, new restrictions on foreign visas will make it harder for some states to import teachers from other countries to work in already hard-to-staff positions.

And for those teachers willing to return to the classroom whether virtually or in person pink slips may be coming later this year asstate tax revenue isdecimated and budgets slashed.
