HIGHLANDS RANCH This is the story of a boy who dreamed of being an astronaut who now shoots rockets into space for NASA.

In the late 1990s, Jerry Larson started Up Aerospace in his Highlands Ranch garage with the goal of inspiring high school and middle school kids to embrace science.

On Monday, Up was one of four U.S. companies picked for the latest round of contracts for NASA's Flight Opportunities program. This award means experiments from around the globe will ride into space aboard an Up Aerospace rocket, with the goal of providing data for future aerospace development.

Early days

At age 9, Larson was enraptured by the iconic television images of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. He dreamed of being an astronaut, spending his time building model rockets one of which is perched atop a filing cabinet in his office.

This love of space and science led him to an aerospace engineering degree from the University of Washington and a career with Lockheed Martin.

Yet, while working on such high-profile projects as the U.S. Space Shuttle, Larson held a vision for a company that would harness that wide-eyed sense of wonderment he felt while watching the first moon walk in 1969.

In 1997, Larson came up with the idea for Up Aerospace.

"NASA used to provide flights once a year for a university, and they let the universities compete and then there'd be one winner. I always thought that was unfortunate," Larson said. "Why can't they all win? That's where the idea for this company originally came up."

He's proud that more than 4,000 students, some as young as sixth-graders, participated in the program.

Alcoa Signs Multiyear Supply Contract With Boeing Valued At More Than $1B

The percentage of women working in the aerospace industry in Washington has remained stagnant for more than 20 years, according to a state labor market economist.

Women account for one in four jobs in aerospace and that has changed little since the 1990s, said Anneliese Vance-Sherman, an Employment Security Department economist based in Everett.

I try not to go in with too many preconceived ideas when looking at the data, Vance-Sherman said. I knew it was going to be a male-dominated industry, but I thought there was going to be some change.

That snapshot is for the entire industry, from accountants and receptionists to machinists and CEOs.

The percentage is even lower when focusing on engineers and management.

Its far fewer, said Sue Chodakewitz, chair of Women in Aerospace, a nonprofit in Washington, D.C., dedicated to expanding opportunities for women in the industry. Its not just CEOs. Its senior managers and executives.

On the positive side, women who work in aerospace in Washington make far more than men and women in other professions.

And while theres a wage gap between the genders within aerospace, its been narrowing slowly and surely.

Ball Aerospace Selected to Prime First Commercial Laser Communications Satellite Fleet

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has been selected by Laser LightCommunications, LLC (Laser Light) to be its prime contractor for the first global, all-optical commercial satellite system. As customer demand for bandwidth grows, space-based laser communication provides a new way to move vast amounts of information around the globe efficiently and with greater resiliency.

The Ball Aerospace contract will include a first phase design analysis that will lead to completion of an eight-satellite constellation operating in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). The complete constellation of up to 12 satellites is expected to deliver 6 terabits of data per second with service speeds of 200 gigabits per second, bi-directionally, or nearly 100 times faster than conventional radio downlinks.

While conventional systems require labor-intensive infrastructure and are vulnerable to potential service disruptions, Laser Light's system will deliver equivalent bandwidth connections at lower operating costs, with higher speed and reliability. This new optical system will integrate seamlessly with existing ground service networks, offering multiple downlink locations to eliminate slowdowns from network congestion, outages, or weather interruptions.

VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering, an aerospace unit of Singapore Technologies Engineering (ST Engineering), has agreed to set up an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Pensacola, Florida.

The company signed an agreement with the City of Pensacola to set up the MRO facility at the Pensacola International Airport, ST Engineering said in a statement on Wednesday. This follows a memorandum of understanding the two parties inked in December last year.

The City of Pensacola will construct an aircraft hangar complex on 18.66 acres of greenfield land and lease it to VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering for 30 years.

The hangar, which is expected to be operational in mid-2016, will be able to accommodate two wide-body aircraft.

"We have played a pioneering role in the development and growth of the aviation industry in the Gulf Coast region in the last two decades, and have been looking for a suitable location to expand our presence and service offerings in this region," said General John Coburn, chairman and chief executive of VT Systems, the US headquarters of ST Engineering.

Advent Aerospace Adds Senior VPs to Management Team; Names New Division Leadership

Rye, New Hampshire, September 8, 2014. Advent Aerospace, Inc. has created two new senior management positions and appointed new leaders for its Jormac Aerospace and Cabin Innovations divisions to reinforce its steadily increasing company-wide growth.

Harvey Ticlo was named senior vice president for corporate strategy, business development and integration. Ticlo was formerly president of the companys Cabin Innovations division, located in Lewisville, Texas. On September 1, Frank Nelson was promoted to vice president and general manager of Jormac Aerospace, succeeding and reporting to Steve Jourdenais. Nelson was vice president-program management at Jormac for the previous six years. Colt Mehler, vice president-project engineering, will succeed Nelson as vice president-program management.

Gander Aerospace Manufacturing unveils latest progress

The growing aerospace initiative in Gander was highlighted on Sept. 8 as Gander Aerospace Manufacturing marked the official opening of its newly-renovated hanger.

The hanger was built to accommodate the increased aircraft service work being carried out by the company. Renovations were made possible with the help of a $500,000 repayable loan from the Atlantic Canada Oppourtunities Agency.

Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), on behalf of the Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (ACOA), was on hand at the opening. GAMIs initiatives are well-worth investing in, he said.

ST Engineerings Aerospace Arm Injects Capital into its Xiamen Engine MRO Joint Venture

Singapore, 8 September 2014 Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today announced that its aerospace arm Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd (ST Aerospace), through its wholly owned subsidiary ST Aerospace Engines Pte Ltd (STA Engines) will be injecting its pro rata share of US$20.8m (approximately $25.98m), as additional capital into its Xiamen-based engine MRO joint venture company, ST Aerospace Technologies (Xiamen) Company Limited (STATCO). The planned additional capital injection is subject to regulatory approvals by the Chinese authorities. Upon injection of the funds, STA Engines total share capital contribution in STATCO will stand at US$41.6m (approximately $55.70m). The additional funding will support STATCOs business growth.

Operating out of the Xiamen Aviation Industry Zone at the Gaoqi International Airport since October 2011, STATCO is an 80:20 joint venture between STA Engines and Xiamen Aviation Industry Co Ltd (XAICO). STATCO provides MRO and total support services for CFM56-7B engines that power the Boeing 737 family of aircraft.

The capital injection is not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets per share and earnings per share of ST Engineering for the current financial year.

Timken To Restructure Aerospace Business – Update

(RTTNews.com) - Bearings and transmission components maker Timken Co. ( TKR ) Monday announced plans to improve performance of its aerospace business, including closing its aerospace engine overhaul business in Arizona by the end of the year.

In the third quarter, the firm expects to record a non-cash, pre-tax charge, comprising mainly goodwill and inventory impairments, of $110 to $120 million, in addition to pre-tax costs of $10 million related to the facility closures.

The company's actions include closing of its aerospace bearing facility located in Wolverhampton, U.K., subject to employee consultation process, rationalizing the capacity into existing facilities.

Timken also plans to eliminate aerospace segment's leadership positions and intends to place the operations under the direction of group president Chris Coughlin. Further, the company said it will evaluate strategic alternatives for its aerospace MRO parts business.

The firm noted that starting with fourth quarter of 2014, it will not report Aerospace financial results separately. It plans to incorporate aerospace business results mainly within the company's Mobile Industries segment.

CEO Richard Kyle said aerospace will continue to be an important market for the company and that it "fits the Timken Business Model well."

"While the segment's overall performance has been weak, we expect that the actions we've outlined will improve returns and generate growth going forward," Kyle added.

In mid-June, Timken lifted its earnings outlook for full year 2014, citing expected second-half operating performance as well as gradually improving markets. The board also authorized an additional share buyback of up to 10 million shares.

It was in September 2013, that the company's board of directors approved a plan to split the company into two stand-alone publicly traded entities by separating the company's steel business from its bearings and power transmission business through a spin off. TimkenSteel Corp., trades under the symbol TMST on the New York Stock Exchange.
