Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse SAS Inaugurates its New Logistics Center

Toulouse, 19th September 2014 Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse SAS, center of excellence for aerospace air management systems within the Liebherr Group of Companies, has added a new logistics center to the infrastructure of its site in Toulouse (France). Many guests, including representatives from institutions and industry, were present at the inauguration ceremony on September 19, 2014.

The new logistics center, which represents an investment of 11.5 million, houses all functions of the supply chain on 6,300 m of floor space incoming goods, incoming goods inspection, stores, outgoing goods inspection and shipping. Also, the building provides office space for purchasing, supplier quality control and other logistics support functions as well as for sales administration.

Outfitted with the latest technologies, the logistics center is able to process 130,000 components and several hundred thousand spare parts annually, thus meeting the highest requirements of quality, traceability and on-time delivery. Moreover, the building is made of materials that meet the highest standards of thermal performance, and water solar energy is used to heat water.

With its new facility, Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse SAS is not only responding to growth in its markets, but also to increasing customer demands regarding industrial performance.

Aerospace Engineering celebrates 100th anniversary

The Universitys aerospace engineering department might not always get the most attention on campus, but it was hard to miss them this weekend when 15 aircraft dazzled fans at Michigan Stadium prior to the Wolverines matchup against Utah.

The department celebrated its 100th anniversary with a three-day Centennial Celebration held Sept. 18-20,which drew academics, students and visitors from all over the country.

The events celebrated the departments diverse accomplishments over the past 100 years. During this time, alumni from the department have gone on to become pilots, astronauts and researchers contributing to advancements in many fields of aerospace research and development.

The events also discussed the future of the industry. The series included panels on the future of aerospace academics, the future of aircrafts and the future of space travel, among others.

During the Panel on the Future of Space Exploration and Use Friday, speakers from select aerospace engineering companies and organizations Blue Origin, NASAs Johnson Space Center, SpaceX and Orbitals Science Corporation spoke about the future of commercial space travel.

Rob Meyerson, president and program manager of Blue Origin, which discussed the companys goal to increase the number of people that can fly to space while simultaneously lowering the cost of commercial spaceflight and improving safety.

Lauri Hansen addressed the emphasis on human spaceflight and their latest project, the Asteroid Redirect Mission, which aims to artificially redirect an asteroid into the moons orbit in order to study its properties. The mission gained attention in the aerospace community, as they are hoping it will be a stepping-stone to more involved human missions into deep space.

The panels not only provided information on the work being done in the industry currently, but they also stressed the importance of student involvement and the role of our generation in aerospace.

Frank DeMauro, vice president at Orbital Sciences Corporation, which focuses on development and launch of satellites and rockets, spoke about giving commercial access to space and their new spacecraft, Cygnus, which could provide new opportunities for travel into deep space.

Im very excited about the caliber of students that come from our colleges, DeMauro said when asked about the education students are receiving at universities.

Through the sharing of know-how and best practices, these initiatives will aid the members of the clusters develop and advance their strategic technology initiatives.

A collaboration forum will be held alternately in France and Quebec. Amongst numerous other projects planned per the agreement, the forum will focus on digitizing the production chain from upstream to downstream.

The Aerospace Corporation Awards Highest Honors to Nine Employees

The Aerospace Corporation honored nine employees during its 35th annual Presidents and Trustees Distinguished Achievement Awards ceremony on Sep. 18, 2014. Robert Walker, board of trustees member and chair of the awards subcommittee, and Dr. Wanda Austin, president and CEO for the corporation, presided over the ceremony.

Enold Pierre-Louis was honored with the 2014 Trustees Distinguished Achievement Award for developing an integrated technique combining stress and probabilistic analyses to resolve numerous launch-critical issues. He is a senior project leader for Environments, Test, and Assessment Department, Engineering and Technology Group. Pierre-Louis developed an integrated analysis technique used on numerous programs to resolve flight-critical issues.

The first group winner of the Presidents Achievement Award comprised: Dr. Steven Beck, distinguished scientist, Electronics and Photonics Laboratory; Henry Montes, senior technical staff, Photonics Technology Department; and Michael Williams, technical staff, Photonics Technology Department. This team was honored for sustaining contributions to the Space Based Infrared System by developing and helping deploy a number of mobile laser beacon systems, which have been critical to the early orbit testing of all U.S. overhead persistent infrared sensors launched and in orbit.

The second group honored with the Presidents Achievement Award included: Dr. Russel Benson, systems director, GEOINT Development Office, National Systems Group; Alison Kremer, project engineer, International Space Systems, Systems Planning, Engineering, and Quality; and Dr. Ashley Williams, senior technical staff, Control Analysis Department, ETG. This team was awarded for their application of innovative controls analysis to diagnose and mitigate issues on a critical national program.

The final Presidents Achievement Award went to James Gin, systems director, Aerospace Western Test Range, Systems Engineering, Space Systems Group, and Chafic Hammoud, systems director, Targets and Interceptor, Systems Planning, Engineering, and Quality for their exceptional leadership in mitigating critical path risks to the first Ballistic Missile Defense System operational flight test. Their support to the Missile Defense Agency has relied heavily upon the breadth of Aerospace expertise in mission assurance for launch vehicles. Gins and Hammouds efforts saved MDA over three months of scheduling time, millions of dollars in costs, and ensured crew safety.

The Aerospace Corporation is a California nonprofit corporation that operates a federally funded research and development center and has almost 3,500 employees. It provides technical guidance and advice on all aspects of space missions to military, civil, and commercial customers to assure space mission success.
