Aerospace Selected As a 2014 BEST Award Winner

The Aerospace Corporation ranked number three out of 46 companies, as one of the Association for Talent Developments 2014 BEST Award winners.

Aerospace was nominated for its workforce development activities performed by its corporate university, The Aerospace Institute. TAI delivers corporate training for technical education, business and leadership development. The technical curriculum includes mission assurance, space systems architecting, acquisition, technologies and engineering disciplines associated with space missions and systems.

Aerospace competed against nearly 100 organizations from 14 countries. Every organization submitted quantitative and qualitative information to ATD about their learning and talent development practices and programs. Applications were assessed in a blind review by members of the BEST Awards advisory committee, a select group of experts in the field.

BEST winners must demonstrate and leverage the learning function as a strategic business tool to achieve enterprise-wide success; they create, support, and champion learning opportunities for results and a learning culture. ATD recognizes organizations that demonstrate enterprise-wide success as a result of employee learning and development.

Aerospace at full throttle as orders increase four-fold in August

Britain's booming aerospace sector has chalked up a record backlog of work after a four-fold increase in orders during August.

The backlog now stands at 12,113 aircraft and 21,128 engines worth a potential 160billion to the UK economy which hosts the worlds second-largest aerospace sector after the US.

According to industry lobby group ADS, Britain is home to 3,000 aerospace firms across all regions and of all sizes, with around 230,000 people employed directly by the companies and indirectly in local supply chains.

Manufacturing giants like European aerospace group Airbus which employs around 17,000 people and makes all the wings for its commercial airliners in the UK dominate the sector.

There are also hundreds of smaller businesses churning out components such as engine blades, aircraft seats and lighting systems.

With an estimated 29,000 new large airliners, 24,000 business jets and 5,800 regional aircraft needed by 2032, firms are focusing on increasing production and deliveries, which increased 5 per cent in August compared with the same month in 2014.

ADS chief executive Paul Everitt said: This latest data signals the strength of the sector. We estimate that the current backlog could equate to more than nine years work in hand for the aerospace sector, giving the industry confidence to focus on the long-term picture; investing in skills and R&D to develop the technologies of tomorrow.

GKN Aerospace Breaks Ground On Alabama Engineering Design Center

GKN Aerospaces Alabama leadership joined state and local officials today to officially break ground on an addition to the companys Tallassee facility that will house an engineering design center.

U.K.-based GKN Aerospace announced the Alabama engineering design center at the Farnborough International Airshow in July.

The groundbreakingsignified the beginning of construction work on a permanent, 10,800-square-foot base for the center, where design and analysis engineers initially will focus on composite technologies for rotorcraft.

The new composites design engineering center in Alabama will enable our global company to expand the high level of design/development engineering support we provide to customers, said Jeff Barger, vice president and general manager of the GKN Aerospace Advanced Composite Structures (ACS) facility. In addition, this project will significantly increase the number of highly skilled engineering personnel based at the growing facility in Tallassee.

The engineering design center is now housed in a temporary location at the Elmore County plant, which concentrates on aerostructures made from composite materials for industry partners such as Bell Helicopter, HondaJet, and Airbus. Initial recruiting has begun for the center, which will have a maximum headcount of 30.

In the Farnborough announcement, GKN Aerospace said the Alabama center will extend its global engineering strength and provide additional expertise in designing and building major composite structures. It said the center expands the facilitys established design-for-manufacturing operation that works with industry partners to increase reliability and lower manufacturing costs.

Alabama Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield, who attended the ground-breaking ceremony, said GKN Aerospaces decision to locate the engineering design center in Tallassee is significant because it positions the state to attract more knowledge-based jobs in aerospace and other industries.

Alabama offers advanced manufacturers many advantages, including a skilled workforce, top-notch job-training programs, and a business-friendly environment, Canfield said. This project from GKN Aerospace shows that Alabama also represents an attractive location for research and development functions that provide critical support to advanced manufacturing.

The GKN Aerospace ACS facility, located about 35 miles from Montgomery, has been in operation since 1985 and today employs more than 1,000 people. The Alabama plant boasts 380,000 square feet of manufacturing space, after a 120,000-square-foot expansion announced in 2005. The engineering design center is expected to be operating in its new home by early next year.

Vector Aerospace Corporation has signed a five year agreement with Orange County, CA Sheriffs Department to conduct maintenance, repair and overhaul on their AS350 and UH-1H helicopters.

Signing this contract with Orange County Sheriffs Department highlights Vectors ability to provide tip-to-tail MRO support for AS350 fleets, states Chris McDowell, vice president, sales & marketing at Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services North America (HS-NA). With extensive qualifications and experience on Arriel 1 & 2 engine platforms, AS350 components and UH-1H aircraft, we are looking forward to supporting the MRO requirements of Orange County over the next 5 years.

We are pleased to sign this agreement with Vector Aerospace, states Sergeant William Fitzgerald, Aviation Support Unit, Orange County Sheriffs Department. Over and above the economic requirements, our decision to leverage Vectors maintenance, repair and overhaul services is based on their reputation for superior customer support and high quality service.

South African Aerospace Group Exports Own Satellite

A South African aerospace group Space Commercial Service Holdings (SCSH) just launched its first self-developed export product at the 65th International Astronautical Congress, the worlds most comprehensive annual space conference held in Toronto, Canada, this past week.

The product called Phoenix-20 HS is a micro-satellite that uses an advanced remote sensing system based on hyperspectral imaging which breaks up images in different spectral bands and enables it to unveil more details of the earths surface. It has many practical uses for instance monitoring the health of agriculture crops for food security, forest canopies to enable early warnings for pest control, soils and vegetation restoration after mining operations, aquatic ecosystems for future water resource, mapping of natural vegetation, shoreline changes, the effect of climate change and the management of natural disasters.

The Phoenix was introduced in a paper delivered at one of the 29 symposia held between 29 September and 3 October where 3000 space professionals gathered for the worlds premier space event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The SCSH group exhibited on the South African Department of Trade and Industries pavilion.

Our biggest breakthrough with this product was firstly to reduce the weight and therefore the cost of the satellite dramatically compared to other satellites doing the same work, and secondly to deliver a usable signal to noise ratio for a compact satellite, says Dr. Sias Mostert, CEO of the Somerset West-based Space Commercial Service Holdings (SCSH) Aerospace Group.

With the launch costs of satellites making a significant contribution to the viability of a mission and by keeping the total weight of the Phoenix-20 HS below 24kg we are now in the position to deliver the total package between US$2,5m and US$4m depending on the requirements of the client. This is a fraction of the cost previously paid for satellites fulfilling the same functions. It is also ideally suited for constellation deployment, which provides the Earth Observation Community with a valuable new tool designed to address both traditional and niche markets not serviced by current satellites, says Dr. Mostert.

The Phoenix is available in two options either with a design lifetime of one year and 500km orbital height above the earths surface or a three to five year lifespan at a height between 500 and 700 kilometers. It typically takes around two years from signing of the contract to the launch of a satellite.

The design and development of the Phoenix was done by Space Advisory Company (SAC) a subsidiary of SCSH. Duncan Stanton was the Project Manager with Martin Jacobs assisting as mission specialist, Hendrik Burger their chief technical officer and Marcello Bartolini as systems engineer.

The SCSH group who recently established their headquarters in the Somerset Links Business Park consists of a number of subsidiary companies, all specializing in different aspects of the high-tech small satellite industry, and brought with it 48 on-site personnel to Somerset West. This is made up of 37 electrical, mechanical and process engineers, and some 9 specialists in the field of IT, Geo-Risk Management, Geo Information Systems, and Social Development. The balance of staff is made up of sales, marketing, management and administrative personnel.
