Fiery aerospace entrepreneur Peter Zieve likely headed to Mukilteo general election – The Seattle Times

Citizens know him as the owner of a very successful business, said a Mukilteo council member, explaining why voters may have supported Peter Zieve despite an AG rebuke and other damaging information.

Seattle Times staff reporter

A Mukilteo council member predicted it: Peter Zieve would get more votes in the primary than many people expected in the race for City Council Position 2. But even the council member, Scott Whelpley, didnt think Zieve would make it through to the general election.

It looks like he will. Initial results Tuesday show the Electroimpact president and major Trump donor had 27 percent of the vote, 9 percentage points ahead of real- estate agent Tina Over. The incumbent, Bob Champion, had a comfortable lead with nearly 55 percent.

In March after the state Attorney Generals Office found that Electroimpact, discriminated on the basis of religion and marital status the aerospace company entered into a consent decree that required it to pay $485,000 and take Zieve out of direct hiring.

For years, Zieve had been circulating inflammatory emails at work about refugees and Muslims, and last year he sent out a mass mailing informing Mukilteo residents about the planned construction of a local mosque.

In the months leading up to the primary, some residents also raised concern about court and police records showing a history of volatility between Zieve and his wife. Although both were at one time charged with low-level assault, the charges were dismissed.

In spite of some of the information thats come out, a lot of the citizens know him as the owner of a very successful business in Mukilteo that employs a lot of people, said Councilmember Richard Emery.

Emery also noted that Zieve, who put $50,000 of his own money into his campaign, blanketed Mukilteo with yard signs.

On his signs, and during a late July candidates forum, Zieve stressed his opposition to new taxes and support for family-friendly initiatives, like new playgrounds.

Despite the wide margin between Zieve and Champion, Arsalan Bukhari, executive director of CAIRs Washington office, said he was disturbed by the number of people who voted for the aerospace entrepreneur. It tells us that we have a more work to do, said Bukhari, an advocate for Muslim civil rights.

Mohammed Riaz Khan, head of the group building the mosque Zieve opposed, was trailing after Tuesdays count in his bid for City Council Position 1.

Manitoba aerospace industry gets $10M lift from federal government – CBC.ca

Manitoba's aerospace industry is getting a boost from the federal government.

The federal Liberals are investing $10 million to expand the Centre for Aerospace Technology and Training and create a new space at Red River College dubbed the Smart Factory, Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development, said Wednesday.

By expanding the technological capabilities at Red River College, the investment will help align the needs of industry with the expertise of post-secondary institutions, Bains said.

The government is partnering with Red River, which will invest $1.2 million, and StandardAero, which will invest $4.5 million, for a combined total investment of $15.7 million.

"This expansion is going to have far-reaching impacts across the province and will be able to serve both the aerospace and non-aerospace industries through direct access to the college's equipment, facilitiesand expertise," said Paul Vogt, president and CEO of Red River College.

The Smart Factory will help aerospace and manufacturing organizations with special equipment connect.

The goal is to help students develop skills needed in the workforce.

Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems surges on tentative deal in contract dispute – Tulsa World

Spirit AeroSystems Holdings stock jumped the most in eight years after reaching an understanding with Boeing, its largest customer, that could end a sprawling contract dispute affecting every commercial jet in the planemakers product lineup.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding addressing open commercial issues on a range of Boeing programs, including the 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner, Spirit said in a statement Wednesday as it announced earnings. The manufacturers are still working to finalize the five-year pact.

The tentative accord takes a major step toward removing a question mark surrounding Spirit, which makes major air-frame components and relies on Boeing for 80 percent of sales. The pact also provides a boost to Chief Executive Officer Thomas Gentile, who joined Wichita, Kansas-based Spirit last year.

Despite warnings that a deal still isnt finalized, investors are likely to take the news of an MoU with Boeing as a sign of good progress and at least a partial removal of the uncertainty that has clouded the stock over the last few years, Rob Stallard, an analyst at Vertical Research Partners, told clients.

Spirit shares closed up 17 percent at $71.72. The stocks largest previous intraday gain in eight years was 15 percent. Boeing dropped 1 percent to $237.95.

Spirit AeroSystems also posted earnings Wednesday morning.

The aerospace manufacturers adjusted earnings rose to $1.57 a share in the second quarter, exceeding the $1.20 average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales were little changed at $1.83 billion. Analysts had predicted $1.74 billion.

The company also increased its full-year profit forecast to a range of $5 to $5.25 a share. Analysts had anticipated $4.81 a share.

Spirit employs about 1,400 people at its Tulsa facility and about 250 workers in McAlester.

B/E Aerospace – Wikipedia

B/E Aerospace, Inc. is a manufacturer of aircraft passenger cabin interior products for the commercial and business jet aircraft markets. B/E Aerospace has leading worldwide market shares in all of its major product lines and serves virtually all of the world's airlines, aircraft manufacturers and leasing companies through its direct global sales and customer support organizations.[citation needed] Based in Wellington, Florida,[5] the company was capitalized as a $4.2 billion corporation as of January 2016.[6]

Founded by Amin Khoury in 1987, B/E Aerospace has evolved from a $3 million company to $2.6 billion in revenue,[7] making it the worlds leading manufacturer of aircraft interior products and solutions for the commercial, business jet, and military markets. B/Es history has been one of multiple acquisitions coupled with strong internal growth.[8]

On June 1, 2005, Air Canada awarded a $50-million (U.S.) contract to Florida-based B/E Aerospace Inc., to upgrade seating in 143 aircraft.[9]

In 2012, B/E's ALCI division became the sole source for all future lavatories on new build Boeing 737 aircraft. Introducing their patented Spacewall lavatory, airlines can take advantage of space provided to add up to 6 passenger seats per aircraft. Delta Air Lines was the launch customer, with the first aircraft delivery on 9/27/2013.

In December 2014, B/E announced that it had completed the spin-off of its aerospace fasteners and consumables business, creating KLX, Inc. (Nasdaq: KLXI).[10]

B/E Aerospace was bought in April 2017[11] for $6.4 billion by the avionics and aircraft connectivity provider Rockwell Collins based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which competes with Honeywell and more recently with Garmin. B/E shareholders would own 20% of the new Rockwell which would have $8.1 billion in revenues and $1.9 billion in pre-tax earnings with nearly 30,000 employees.[12]

The company is a major provider of airline seats to many airlines worldwide. Some significant customers include United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, Japan Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. Customers using the company's most popular product - Diamond Business Class Seat, include Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air China, American Airlines, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM, Qatar Airways, Thai Airways, United Airlines and Virgin Australia. Some of B/E Aerospace's rivals in the airline seating industry include Acro Aircraft Seating in the UK, Zodiac Seats U.S. in Gainesville, Texas, Zodiac Seats France, STELIA Sogerma Seats in France, Geven in Italy, Recaro in Germany, and Aviointeriors in Italy.

In the Business Jet Seating segment, B/E Aerospace's main competitors are United Technologies Corporation's Decrane Aircraft Seating in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Iacobucci in Italy, and PAC Seating Systems in Palm City, Florida.

B/E Aerospace also manufactures beverage makers, ovens, oxygen systems, lavatories and interior lighting for commercial aircraft and business jets.[13] B/E Aerospace's Interior Structures division based in Leighton Buzzard UK, manufactures and supplies galley monuments for the Airbus A350.

The FAA announced on 11 August 2008 that it would investigate why "almost half the masks either did not deploy or failed to provide oxygen" during a pan-pan event on American Airlines Flight 31[14] The FAA had recently issued airworthiness directives regarding problems with defective inline flow indicators obstructing the BE Aerospace oxygen masks on several Boeing commercial aircraft models. B/E had identified a repair in February 2006. Boeing then issued a "Special Attention Service Bulletin" to inspect and if necessary repair the masks in April 2007. The directives only require action by April 2013 unless already done.[15]

Rockwell Collins, a manufacturer and supplier of aviation and integrated solutions for both commercial and government applications, filed for regulatory approval for its intended acquisition of B/E Aerospace before the Philippine Competition Commission since the latter has a branch in the Philippines operating a manufacturing plant in Tanauan, Batangas.[16]

As a result of the acquisition, a newly created direct or indirect subsidiary of Rockwell Collins, Quarterback Merger Sub Corp., will merge with and into B/E Aerospace, with the latter surviving the merger as a direct or indirect subsidiary of Rockwell Collins.[16]

Enterprise 3D Printing Strengthens Position in Aerospace and Looks Set to Expand into Other Industries Over Next Ten … – PR Newswire (press release)

"Aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), hospitals, dentists, and their suppliers already benefit from practical 3D Printing use cases," says Pierce Owen, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. "Now, innovation from both established and new entry specialists will create more use cases in more industries on a scale not seen before. Even if AM does not make sense for mass production, distributed manufacturing platforms that provide access to 3D printers close to end users, will empower almost all manufacturers to explore using AM for replacement parts on-demand."

The U.S. aerospace and defense industries will make up a large chunk of AM growth over the next ten years, producing additive manufactured parts and products with a value of US$17.8 billion in 2026, due to the sheer size of the American aerospace industry and its defense budget. GE Additive and GE Aviation already 3D print fuel nozzles for the LEAP jet engines designed for the commercial aircraft of Airbus, Boeing and the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac).

Beyond aerospace, Stratasys's PolyJet modelling has proven particularly effective in producing anatomical models for surgical planning. Because PolyJet modelling can use multiple materials and colors, it can produce customized models with bones of the correct density and tissues with accurate vascular structures. Also, adoption will pick up in footwear, where Adidas will use Carbon's AM systems for mid-soles in thousands of shoes and Nike will use HP's for spikes on track and football cleats.

"While certain industries have already embraced 3D Printing technology, to have widespread appeal, other sectors will have to redesign both products and supply chains with the help of AM engineering consultants and front-line workers, and AM specialists will have to build machines that work faster and cheaper," concludes Owen.

These findings are from ABI Research's Enterprise 3D Printing and Distributed Manufacturing report. This report is part of the company's Industrial Internet research service, which includes research, data, and analyst insights.

A Rockwell Collins Deal Keeps Looking Smarter – Bloomberg

Rockwell Collins Inc. shareholders just got another reason to like the company's takeover of B/E Aerospace.

Shares of the $18 billion avionics company flirted with their worst decline since the financial crisis on Monday, after Bloomberg News reported Boeing Co. was seeking to develop competing navigation systems and flight controls for itsjets. Boeing isn't Rockwell Collins's only customer, but it's a big one.

An agreement to supply displays and controls on Boeing's 777X was expected to generate $2 billion in revenue for Rockwell Collins over the life of the program, while a2015 Bloomberg Intelligence analysis estimated the company could earn as much as $800,000 for each of the planemaker's737MAX aircraft. So I can see why shareholders freaked out.

Simmer Down

Rockwell Collins's plunge on news of Boeing's avionics interest looks overblown

Source: Bloomberg

But those revenue opportunities won't vanish. For one thing, Boeing aims to bring its avionics offerings to the market next decade, suggesting it will be more inclined to put its products on new versions of planes, rather than reconfigure ones currently in production. And even then, it's not clear Boeing can come up with something on par with what Rockwell Collins can deliver.

This does point to a further tightening of the screws on aircraft suppliers. Whatever avionics market share Rockwell Collins maintains at Boeing is at risk of being less profitable. Good thing it recently announced a merger to combat that very issue.

Adding food carts and airplane seats to its product portfolio with the $8.3 billion takeover of B/E Aerospace set Rockwell Collins up to triple its typical work-share on a wide-body jet and double what it can supply for narrow-body planes. That means more overall revenue, but also the ability to better absorb customers' push for lower average costs.

Beyond that, Rockwell Collins'smore diversified business model means any hit to its avionics business won't be as fatal as it might have been previously.Let's pause to appreciate the irony that the lack of product overlap between Rockwell Collins and B/E Aerospace, which so irked investors including Starboard Value, willarguably wind up being an even bigger benefit than the cost synergies those shareholders would have preferred to see.

Turbo Boost

The B/E Aerospace deal should be a boon to Rockwell Collins's revenue, which had been been stagnating as a record sales surge in commercial jets showed signs of winding down

Source: Bloomberg

Boeing's avionics foray is about wringing more money out of its jets through servicing agreements, which tend to be more profitable than the initial plane sale. Consider that Rockwell Collins's annual operating margin can be nearly triple Boeing's.

Avionics is a perfect way for Boeing to try to narrow that gap, because the systems must be frequently upgraded as technology improves. They also feature prominently in data collection to help make planes run more efficiently. Seats and kitchen galleys? Not quite as appealing, says Bloomberg Intelligence analyst George Ferguson.

Boeing earlier this year announced a collaboration on aircraft seating with automotive-interiors company Adient Plc, along with a similar arrangement with EnCore. But that's more about giving Boeing options in the event of production delays than a sign of internal cabin-fitting production aspirations.

Besides, much of B/E Aerospace's business comes from airlines, who notonly buy seats when they order new planes from the likes of Boeing but also when they retrofit older models. They seemunlikely to categorically abandon that relationship for a bet on newer entrants. The extra competition here also won't be great for margins, butRockwell Collins will still be in a position to command meaningful market share across the spectrum of plane parts.

And it has a head start, both in commercial and defense markets.Notable from last week's earnings update were CEO Kelly Ortberg's comments about greatercross-selling opportunities on B/E Aerospace products than Rockwell Collinshad anticipated, particularly in government sales.

This may be a rare case of a deal becoming smarter with time.

UK aerospace and defence industry braced for disappointing quarterly results – Express.co.uk

Smaller player Meggitt also posts an update with markets braced for disappointing results from this key UK sector.

This will be a blow to UK growth hopes after last weeks figures showing GDP rose just 0.3 per cent in the second quarter.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said the UK aerospace sector is the worlds second largest after the US.

All three companies are major exporters and have benefited from the drop in the value of the pound post-Brexit, which has boosted demand as their products are relatively cheaper for foreign customers.

In recent weeks markets have lost some of their enthusiasm for the aerospace sector

Russ Mould - AJ Bell investment director

However, a continuing UK slowdown might hit domestic military spending and sales at the three companies, Mould added.

In recent weeks markets have lost some of their enthusiasm for the aerospace sector.

Last month engineering giant Rolls-Royce announced a 150 million investment in new and existing civil aerospace facilities in the UK, signalling its confidence in Britain after it leaves the EU.

GETTY

Ian Forrest, investment research analyst at The Share Centre, said Rolls-Royce is still recovering after issuing a rash of property warnings.

It is now starting to see the benefits of its extensive restructuring programme.

The engineer has just unveiled its largest and grandest car ever, the Phantom VIII, and Forrest added: It needs to show more signs of progress, especially in the marine division, although aerospace should be helped by the lower oil price and move towards more fuel-efficient planes.

Shares in BAE Systems jumped earlier this month after the High Court threw out a case trying to block arms sales by British firms to Saudi Arabia.

Philip Buller, European aerospace and defence analyst at Barclays, said this could offer near-term support but he remains underweight on the stock.

Real estate developer Donald Trump annouces intentions to build a $100 million dollar Regency Hotel in 1976.

We remain concerned by the companys ability to outperform peers and consider growth expectations to be overly optimistic over the medium term.

The aerospace and defence sector was given a boost by Donald Trumps US presidential victory last year, as he ran on a campaign of boosting military spending.

Sanjay Jha, researcher at Panmure Gordon, said it continues to ride this wave of optimism even though Trumps spending plans look increasingly imperilled.

Despite all the talk, there has been no increase in defence spending.

He added: The prospect of simultaneously getting new money for defence and approving Trumps tax cuts look too ambitious.

Jha warned the civil aerospace sector is plagued with over-capacity while the business jet markets still look sick, hitting Meggitt.

It is heavily reliant on cheap debt to keep dancing, once the music stops in our view earnings will collapse.

The delivery of two Bombardier CSeries passenger jets to eastern European airline Air Baltic in June has contributed to strong UK aerospace output.

Trade body ADS said seven CSeries jets - the wings of which are made in Belfast - had been delivered in the first half of the year.

And the work of the entirety of the UK's aerospace sector saw 665 aircraft delivered to customers - 10 below 2016's record-setting production pace.

ADS said aircraft and engine order books for the UK industry were also at record highs. The backlog of global orders had risen to a new record of 13,589.

Chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The aerospace industry is experiencing sustained growth, both in the UK and around the world."

Research highlights Lancashire’s position within UK aerospace sector – BQ Live

The international expo, which ran from June 19-25, was attended by representatives of Aerospace Lancashire, the joint initiative between the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Lancashire County Council (LCC) which launched at the Farnborough International Airshow last year.

Part of the North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA) delegation, Aerospace Lancashire had its own exhibition stand which showcased the countys world-class aerospace businesses, assets and infrastructure dedicated to aerospace R&D, manufacturing and servicing.

This included the Samlesbury Enterprise Zone site, part of the new Lancashire Advanced Manufacturing and Energy Enterprise Zone cluster, which has been designated a dedicated aerospace hub. Samlesbury is also the location of the BAEs UK manufacturing base which includes its hi-tech aerospace training facility, the Academy for Skills & Knowledge.

Another key part of Aerospace Lancashires trade mission was sharing the findings of a new report, produced by the NWAA, into the size, diversity and growth potential of Lancashires aerospace economy.

Lancashire: Number One For Aerospace Jobs is a 28-page report that analysed local, regional, national and global aerospace markets and assessed Lancashires current and future growth opportunities within the sector.

It found that not only was Lancashire still the UKs number one region for Aerospace employment, with around 17,000 directly employed in the sector, it is the only place in the UK to have the skills, resources and capacity for the end-to-end manufacturing and servicing of a complete aircraft for its entire life-cycle.

The research also highlighted that Lancashire has enjoyed substantial private sector investment, totalling around 300m, into aerospace and related facilities in recent years.

This level of investment, combined with the multi-million pounds of public money secured by the LEP through three rounds of Growth Deal funding to support aerospace activities, means Lancashire has the resources and infrastructure to sustain growth within the aerospace and AEM sectors for many years to come.

It has been calculated that around 500 firms in Lancashire directly supply the countys aerospace sector, with many of these working within specialist manufacturing areas such as precision components, advanced surface treatments, and the assembly of engine sub-systems.

Andy Walker, from the Aerospace Lancashire delegation, said: As this report has highlighted, Lancashire remains the UKs biggest aerospace employer and supports tens of thousands of high skilled jobs both directly and through its supply chain.

David Bailey, chief executive of the NWAA, said: Our new report suggests that the global economic outlook for the aerospace sector remains very positive, with Lancashire in a great position to build upon its status as the UKs leading region for aerospace jobs. The fact that Lancashire has a complete end-to-end capabilityto design, build and maintain an entire fixed-wing aircraft provides for a fantastic range of business and employment opportunities.

Meet the ‘space angel’ of San Diego, who’s teaching companies to become the next SpaceX – CNBC

Venture capitalists have historically avoided investing in aerospace start-ups. That's because developing space technologies like rockets or satellites costs a great deal, and it can take a long time to reel in customers, especially if a start-up is seeking government contracts.

That's where space angel Ellen Chang comes in. The veteran aerospace engineer created LightSpeed Innovations in the summer of 2015 as an accelerator like Y Combinator or TechStars, but just for aerospace startups. Her aim is to help space startups find ways to make money, even before their technology is ready for big-time customers.

It's no longer necessary to launch a multi-million dollar rocket to have a viable space-tech start-up. Demand for space-related technology has ramped up beyond NASA and the Defense Department.

According to the Director of Research at the Space Foundation, Micah Walter-Range, aerospace technologies like GPS and nano-satellite constellations are being used in areas such as ride-hailing, navigation apps and business services that monitor things like crop growth on farms and factory emissions.

Venture investors have begun to place bets in so-called "new space" startups, with $1.49 billion in funding going to aerospace companies in 2016 across 49 deals according to CB Insights, and 25 venture deals in this sector so far in 2017.

Lightspeed aims to help these start-ups by creating a network of early-stage mentors, investors and accelerators -- the type that peers who make mobile apps or hardware would take for granted.

But a typical tech accelerator like Y Combinator doesn't necessarily work for these kinds of founders.

"Astro-preneurs tend to be older. They get advanced degrees, have some industry experience and are ready to go out on their own. But they also have families and can't relocate then eat only ramen," she said.

Controversial aerospace exec garners attention in race – The Daily Herald

More stories previewing Tuesdays primary election

MUKILTEO Around 7 a.m. on a Friday in mid-June, Peter Zieve settled in at an outside table at Starbucks and started reading the newspaper.

The franchise is down the road from Electroimpact Inc., the company he founded and developed into a successful aerospace firm with the Boeing Co. one of its best customers.

On that day, hed come to discuss his run for a seat on the Mukilteo City Council. Its his maiden venture into electoral politics and, like much surrounding Zieve this past couple of years, it is stirring things up in the community.

His campaign is built on a platform of conservative and populist ideas that he enunciates bluntly and brashly, an approach not too dissimilar to that of Republican President Donald Trump, to whose campaign Zieve, a Republican, gave $1 million.

Zieve, 63, said he opposes new taxes, wants less government intrusion on private property rights and more athletic facilities for young people.

He said hes angry at the raft of regulations imposed on him when he constructed a lighted sports court at his home and wants to reel in the city. He wants to axe funding for the city job held by Marko Liias, a Democratic state senator, convinced its wrong for Mukilteo to pay someone already drawing a state salary. He supports helping homeless individuals with services to regain their footing but warns of an impending invasion of homeless camps that threaten the fabric of the city unless deterred by legal force.

Zieve is competing against incumbent Councilman Bob Champion and Tina Over for the Position 2 seat in the Aug. 1 primary. The two who finish with the most votes will advance to the general election in November.

While Zieve talked of what he wants to do if elected, those opposing his candidacy focus on what he did to incite division in the community around a proposed Islamic Center, an investigation of his companys treatment of employees, and a public conversation about his turbulent family life.

Last year Zieve undertook a secret campaign until he was found out against the mosque because he feared it would become a haven for terrorists. He later dropped his opposition and apologized for riling up residents with postcards sent anonymously raising concerns about the center.

This year a probe of alleged employee discrimination at Electroimpact resulted in a $485,000 fine against the firm. That probe by the state attorney general concluded Zieve, who is Jewish, refused to hire Muslim applicants, harassed workers based on their religious faith and rewarded employees who married and had children.

And, of late, the intersection of Zieves marital conflicts and the court system has become fodder for the campaign, especially his behavior, which at times allegedly terrified his 45-year-old wife.

In 2011, Zieve spent a night in jail following a heated argument with Mariya Morozova-Zieve during which he sprayed Windex in her eyes, according to court documents. He was arrested on a domestic violence assault charge that was later dismissed.

A year earlier, she tried to leave him, traveling to Anaheim, California, with their three young sons. When Zieve found them and confronted her in a hotel room, a fight ensued. This time, she went to jail and the assault charge was dropped. In late 2015, she started to legally end their relationship, only to drop that in early 2016.

Zieve came prepared for questions. He brought a stack of paper, including a picture of him and the chief promoter of the mosque, a list of the companys minority employees and a few notes demonstrating his familys unity.

He sounded confident those matters wont sway voters.

They know me. People know where my beliefs are. I may be one of the best known in the community, he said. If they vote for me, its a pretty big statement.

There are 14,173 registered voters in Mukilteo and as of Tuesday 10 percent of them had returned their ballots, according to the Snohomish County Auditors Office.

Mosque is just not an issue

Zieve founded Electroimpact in 1986 and is its chief executive officer. The company moved to Mukilteo in 1992 and Zieve said he moved into the city in 2007. Records show he bought his current home in 2008.

Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson has a broader perspective of him than many public officials because her husband works at Zieves company. She said she has seen the aerospace executive as an eccentric genius. He is often inappropriate, sometimes funny and, until his actions with the mosque, mostly harmless.

Gregerson said she knew of Zieves concerns about the mosque and sought to keep him fully informed on how he could make his views on the project known throughout the public review process. She denied his claim that she encouraged him to send out the postcards.

No matter now, Zieve said.

I have had very little feedback about that, he said. Its just not an issue.

When he first heard of the mosque plans, he said, he wanted the leading supporter, Mohammed Riaz Khan to tell me how you are going to make sure it doesnt become a home for terrorism.

Zieve said when he felt there was a plan for it to be community-oriented and safe he ended his opposition.

When asked how the experience might affect him as a public servant if elected, Zieve said, Everything you do in life you learn (something.) I learned. I dont know what I learned exactly.

Regarding the state investigation, Zieve said his son Michael, an Electroimpact executive, kept him out of the process entirely.

I am not happy about what happened to me. I would have fought them to the end of the Earth. It was a witch hunt, he said. (Michael) just wanted it to go away.

He asserted the state investigation found only one employee in the United Kingdom who claimed to have been harmed. A portion of the fine is set aside for restitution to those who can prove they were subject to discrimination. As of Monday, 30 claims had been received and under review, according to an agency spokeswoman.

Regarding the turbulence with his current wife, he said, Were not perfect but were not so bad either.

The night he went to jail he said simply was a bad night. It really was a misunderstanding.

Zieve is the father of six children two with his first wife, one with his second and three with Mariya, who also has a daughter from a previous marriage. The Zieves have been together for roughly a dozen years.

He said the couple married in August 2007, which is what is reflected in some Snohomish County Superior Court records, but contradicted in others.

He faces a scientist and a real estate broker

Zieve launched his campaign with a $50,000 loan and had received no contributions, according to information posted on the Public Disclosure Commission website. He had spent $1,970 on yard signs as of Monday. Hes also paid $6,999 to reserve a billboard on Mukilteo Speedway starting at the end of August.

That assumes hell make it through the primary.

Bob Champion and Tina Over are making their own cases with voters.

Champion, 61, is a staff scientist specializing in in-flight safety equipment at Honeywell Inc. in Redmond. Hes currently the council president and lives a couple of blocks from Zieve.

He said he is seeking a second term to complete work on an update of the citys comprehensive plan.

Champion described himself as a fiscal conservative and wants to continue to provide a steady hand on the citys monetary policy.

He voted against the Sound Transit 3 expansion measure last year because it was too big and too broad, he said. He opposes the citys proposed transportation sales tax increase on this falls ballot saying it is premature. He wants to see how the city spends its current budget allotment of nearly $1 million for road improvements, then consider using general fund dollars or property tax receipts to carry out needed maintenance.

As to Zieve, He and I disagree on social issues, Champion said. I try to focus on my campaign. I dont want to go in a negative direction.

At a forum Monday, candidates were asked to say something nice about their opponents. Champion said Zieve is an entrepreneur whose company pays a lot of taxes to the city.

Thank you Peter, he said, earning a few laughs.

Champion had loaned $5,000 to his campaign as of Monday while Over had not reported any contributions.

Over, 33, is a real estate broker making her first run for public office. She said shes lived in the city for five years.

I did it because I felt Id be good at the position, she said.

Over vowed to be a more assertive voice on the council than the incumbent. If elected, she would bring much needed diversity of age, gender and religion to the panel, she said. Her husband is Muslim, and theyre raising their young son in his faith.

On the issues, Over said she opposes the transportation sales tax hike and wants to see the city tighten its budget belt.

I think there are other places to find the money to fund those road improvements, she said.

She wants to invest money into increasing public safety, assist neighborhoods in dealing with the effects of commercial air service at Paine Field and to ensure the terminal operators and airlines adhere to all agreements for operations.

As for Zieve, she said, she filed to run before he did. His entry added motivation.

I do not want someone like him representing me. The stuff that he stands for I feel is appalling, she said. I dont think hes in it for the community. I just have to knock him out.
