"Fly-by-Wireless Improves Safety and Reduces Cost" – International Aerospace Consortium Initiative Unveiled

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Following NASA partnership, CANEUS (Canada-Europe-US-Asia) Aerospace network and key aerospace stakeholders are teaming up to develop less-wire and fly-by-wireless (FBW) capabilities. The partnership projects to reduce aggregate wire weight by approximately 10%-30% overall and 70%-90% for critical components, contributing to improved fuel economy, reduced emissions and potential failure points, and improved operational performance.

Industry vision is to create world class FBW research, testing and certification capability, which will benefit the Aerospace industry worldwide for Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) applications for both new and sustainment of legacy aircrafts & UAV's.

Stakeholders include LMCO, BAE Systems, Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, Bombardier, GE, Gulfstream, Goodrich Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, NASA, and US DoD. CANEUS is discussing with Governments and industry customers to establish such facility inCanada. The consortium is scheduled to meet on August 27-28, 2012, in Ottawa to formulate international public-private partnership.

Improved Safety and Reduced Costs

Wiring, connector problems and sensors are key failure points, resulting in lengthy delays, troubleshooting, and replacement. Costly flight delays are precipitated by the need to troubleshoot cables/connections, and/or repair sensors. Thus, wiring continues to be too expensive to remove once it is installed, even with the weight penalties.

Breakthroughs

New technology options using sensors potentially for data connectivity and micro/nano technologies are making it possible to retrofit existing vehicles, such as large commercial fleets and already designed models that will enter the commercial market.

Implications for Emerging Markets: Environmental and Economic Impact

As the number of aircrafts in operation and flights will increase in emerging markets of Asia, Middle East and Africa, maintenance costs are one of the primary drivers of airlines. With many of these aircrafts having upwards of 30,000 connectors and tens of thousands of wires that must be routinely checked.

United States Rocket Academy Welcomes XCOR Aerospace to Texas

DALLAS, July 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Rocket Academy welcomed this week's announcement that XCOR Aerospace will establish a new Commercial Space Research and Development Center in Midland, Texas.

"Texas is on the verge of becoming the Space State," said United States Rocket Academy chairman Edward Wright. "XCOR will be the fourth company testing fully reusable suborbital rocketships in Texas."

Armadillo Aerospace and Blue Origin are already testing rocketships at Caddo Mills Airport near Dallas and Corn Ranch in West Texas. SpaceX will begin testing its reusable rocketship at McGregor, Texas near Waco shortly.

The XCOR Lynx will be the next step forward for Texas: a piloted rocketship which will carry humans as well as experiments. "Suborbital rocketships will revolutionize human spaceflight, just as microcomputers revolutionized computing," Wright said. "This move will place Texas at the center of that revolution."

The United States Rocket Academy, a Texas-based nonprofit that promotes citizen science and space exploration, has already acquired a contract for 10 flights on the XCOR Lynx.

The United States Rocket Academy has created Citizens in Space (www.citizensinspace.org), a program that is making suborbital spaceflights available to the citizen-science community. For its initial flight campaign, Citizens in Space will select 100 citizen-science experiments and 10 citizen astronauts to fly as payload operators.

Three citizen astronaut candidates (two from Texas) are already in training. Seven more will be selected over the next 12-24 months. Experiments operated by citizen astronauts will include a NASA-inspired High Altitude Astrobiology experiment designed to find microorganisms at the edge of space.

Southwest Research Institute, headquartered in San Antonio, has acquired six flights on the XCOR Lynx. Dr. Alan Stern, former NASA Associate Administrator for Space Science, is leading a team of suborbital payload developers at SwRI.

At Texas A&M University in College Station, the Space Engineering Research Station has signed an agreement to act as a payload integrator for XCOR Aerospace.

"Astronauts have been training in Texas more than forty years," Wright said. "Soon, rocketships carrying astronauts will be flying from Texas spaceports. The road to space begins in the Lone Star State."

The aerospace technology of tomorrow – Video

11-07-2012 13:07 Innovation is key at the Farnborough Air Show in Hampshire, England. A week long international trade fair for the aerospace industry, where the technology of tomorrow is on show for all to see and where you get to glimpse of projects which, in a few short years, will become a reality. Taking gadgets to a new level, the European manufacturer Airbus introduced the iPad to its cockpit. The touch screen device used by millions on a daily basis can now be operated by pilots to carry out numerous performance calculations, even including the configuration of an aircraft's take-off. Didier Lux, Executive Vice President of Airbus Customer Services, explained: "Our children use it every day, so we must be able to provide the same type of technology to Airbus pilots, especially when it's so fantastic in terms of ergonomics, ease of access and data processing." Farnborough dedicated a special stand to innovation, where a number of projects from European universities are on display. Cardiff University exhibited its programme which identifies in real time, any damage caused to the structure of a plane. "The idea of this system is to pick up damage. So, to be able to very early on collect information about any damage in the structure and where it is and what kind of damage we've got. There are sensors actually embedded into the composite structure and they pick up a signal that comes off the damage as it grows, and by using that information we can work out exactly where ...

Takeover spree sweeps aerospace and defence sector

10 July 2012 Last updated at 19:02 ET By Jorn Madslien Business reporter, BBC News, Farnborough airshow

Specialist rivets, electromechanical actuators, hydraulic manifolds and snake-arm robots that have been designed to be used in confined spaces.

The aerospace and defence industry is, perhaps more than any other industry, truly a sum of its parts.

Indeed, even the thousands of individual components that make up a fighter jet engine, an unmanned aerial vehicle or an aeroplane wing are so complex that they too are sums of their parts.

Dice it and slice it enough times and you will eventually find that there are thousands and thousands of parts suppliers.

Each and every one of them is contributing to the manufacture of the metal that is displayed in aerial acrobatics, or to the planes or engines or missiles sold in the many multi-billion dollar deals announced this week.

"It is like a pyramid," says a US investment banker at the Farnborough airshow.

The pyramid's pinnacle is made up of big players, such as aeroplane makers Airbus and Boeing, engine makers such as GE and Rolls-Royce and defence firms including Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, to name but a few.

Each of them have trading relationships with a vast number of so-called tier two and tier three suppliers, who in turn rely both on the big players and on each other.

Most of them are here this week, milling around in a vast exhibition hall, establishing contacts, pushing their wares.

Canadian Aerospace Industry Posted Increased Revenues, Employment in 2011

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 9, 2012 /CNW/ - The Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) today released performance results for Canada's aerospace industry in 2011:

"The aerospace industry's performance for 2011 demonstrates the important contribution this sector continues to makes to the Canadian economy," said Jim Quick, President and CEO of AIAC. "The considerable increase in R&D investments reaffirms aerospace's position as one of Canada's largest industrial contributors to research and development."

Over 60 percent of respondents to AIAC's annual survey agreed that there is considerable room for the industry to grow in Canada in coming years, forecasting hiring increases of up to 15% by 2016.
