Bombardier Aerospace puts 'pause' on discretionary spending to preserve cash

By Ross Marowits, The Canadian Press

MONTREAL - Bombardier's aerospace division is putting a "pause" on discretionary spending at least until January to preserve cash for two key aircraft development programs.

In a memo to employees, the Montreal-based transportation giant said it is suspending most new hirings, cancelling off-site meetings, cutting all funding for Christmas parties and even suspending most travel.

Other measures include reducing or delaying spending on consultants, suspending most training, and stopping any office renovations. All capital spending will have to receive senior management approval.

Spokeswoman Haley Dunne says the missive sent last week from finance vice-president Mairead Lavery was meant to remind employees to be more prudent about what they're spending on during the company's peak period of investment.

"We're halfway through the year so it's just time to make sure that people are aware that they need to be focusing on our priorities," she said in an interview.

Lavery told employees that "performance in cash generation was not in line with budget for the first six months of the year" and that the move was needed because Bombardier has limited control over when it receives cash from customers.

The company will fill positions required for the development programs, but non-essential positions will remain vacant until after January.

Bombardier Aerospace (TSX:BBD-B.TO - News) last put a freeze on discretionary spending in 2009.

The world's third-largest aircraft manufacturer is in the midst of several development projects, notably the new CSeries commercial aircraft set to begin deliveries the end of 2013 and the Learjet 85 business jet, also set to be delivered next year.

3M Aerospace Introduces Removable Gel Tape

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

3M Aerospace introduces 3M Removable Gel Tape, an easy-to-apply solution to help protect substrate corrosion in-aircraft. Removable gel tapes are installed under an aircrafts floorboards on top of the floor beams, providing exceptional sealing and corrosion protection and helping avoid expensive repairs and days out of service.

3Ms removable gel tapes are available in both one-side and two-sided adhesive options. Lighter than current gel tapes, these new tapes can be easily removed and repositioned. The tapes do not pill or ball and leave behind little to no residue, reducing the labor required for beam cleaning after tape removal. Aging studies have demonstrated that the tapes peel away cleanly after nine to 12 months in use, results that are superior to competitive products.

To use, the tape is simply applied to the beam, after which the floor panel can be applied. 3Ms gel tapes offer convenient handling characteristics, including easy cutting, low roll unwind tension, and simple application. Additionally, screws press easily through the 2mm polyester.

3M Removable Gel Tapes meet the FAAs recently released new policy statement for 14CFR 25.853 that provides standardized testing and established acceptable methods of compliance for fire resistance.

Together with 3Ms wet area protection tapes, 3M Removable Gel Tapes help provide a comprehensive solution to protect against aircraft corrosion. Find more information about removable gel tapes at 3M.com/WetArea.

UPDATE 1-Airbus fights exclusion from U.S. aerospace lobby

* EADS (Other OTC: EADSF.PK - news) unit says it meets qualifications for membership

* US group's rules ban firms with government stakes

* Airbus (Paris: NL0000235190 - news) , Boeing (NYSE: BA - news) could lobby jointly on some issues-analyst

By Doug Palmer and Tim Hepher

WASHINGTON, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Airbus has clashed with the U.S. aerospace industry over whether it should be allowed to join its top domestic lobbying group, weeks after announcing plans to set up jet assembly in Alabama.

Boeing's main rival says its parent, European aerospace group EADS, should be allowed to take a seat alongside flagship UK firms Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems (LSE: BA.L - news) because it has facilities in the U.S. and already employs thousands of local workers.

It plans to add 1,000 more aerospace industry jobs by assembling some of its A320 jets in Mobile, Alabama, from 2016.

But it was rebuffed by the head of the Aerospace Industries Association, who said membership of the 93-year-old club was reserved for companies without foreign government ownership.

EADS is 15-percent owned by the French government and is in the throes of seeing a similar stake being acquired by Germany.

"Remember, this is the Aerospace Industry Association of America. We go back to (U.S. aviation pioneers) Orville Wright and Glenn Curtiss, who founded this almost a hundred years ago," AIA President and Chief Executive Marion Blakey told Reuters.

Northrop Grumman Hosts Distinguished Panel of Women Aerospace Leaders

REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Sept. 4, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Eminent women thought leaders from government and industry provided an informative perspective on the U.S. Department of Defense push for affordability in space at a Women in Aerospace forum hosted by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC).

The panel, moderated by Northrop Grumman's Linnie Haynesworth, vice president of aerospace products, included Lt. Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski, commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) at Los Angeles Air Force Base; Wanda Austin, chief executive officer of The Aerospace Corp.; Gwynne Shotwell, president of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX); and Betty Sapp, director of the National Reconnaissance Office.

In her opening remarks, Haynesworth noted that "the issue of space affordability is a challenge, but also represents an opportunity for our industry." The panelists discussed such topics as the role of technology, launch-on-demand capability and fixed-price contracting.

Pawlikowski said the SMC, part of the Air Force's space acquisition arm, is examining "what we buy and how we buy it." This review has put the SMC on a path toward new space architectures based on smaller and more manageable satellites. The goal, she said, is "not only affordability, but also resiliency."

Panelists also fielded questions from some of the more than 300 Northrop Grumman employees and Women in Aerospace supporters who attended the Aug. 21 event at the company's Space Park campus in Redondo Beach, Calif.

Korea Aerospace Sale Falls Apart After Korean Air Is Only Bidder

The sale of 41.8% of Korea Aerospace Industries (047810.SE) for KRW1.05 trillion ($926 million) collapsed Friday as shareholders received just one preliminary bid--from Korea Air Lines Co. (003490.SE).

Public-auction laws stipulate there must be two or more bidders for a sale to proceed.

It is the latest illustration of the difficulty of doing deals ahead of a the presidential election in December. Incumbent Lee Myung-bak is struggling with low public approval near the end of his term.

A stakeholders' meeting will now decide if the block will be offered again, shareholders for KAI, led by state-run Korea Finance Corp., said in a statement Friday without stating a date.

This outcome has been widely expected since mid-August when just one letter of intent to bid was received.

The 41.8% slice of Korea Aerospace was offered by Korea Finance, Hyundai Motor Co. (HYMLY), Doosan Group and Samsung Techwin Co. (012450.SE). Together they own 56.7%.

Korea Aerospace was formed in 1999 by the merger of the aerospace divisions of Samsung, Hyundai and the now defunct Daewoo following difficulties encountered during the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.

The government failed three times in as many years to privatize the nation's largest financial holding company, Woori Finance Holdings (053000.SE). The plan to list state-owned KDB Financial Group before the year is also being opposed by some lawmakers.
