Aerospace sells planes to Russia in $88m deal

Waikato company Pacific Aerospace has signed an agreement with a Russian company to build 37 aircraft in an $88 million groundbreaking deal for New Zealand.

The deal with Moscow-based AeroProject 751, whose directors have likened the qualities of Pacific Aerospace's P750 XSTOL aircraft to the legendary Russian assault rifle, the Kalashnikov, will result in New Zealand-made planes being the first certified light aircraft to operate commercially in Russia's underdeveloped general aviation sector.

Under the agreement, Aeroproject, whose principals are in Hamilton with 12 members of the Russian Government's Interstate Aviation Committee putting the P750 through its certification paces, will take delivery of the 37 planes over the next five years.

Aeroproject spokesman Egor Mityaev said the P750s would find a keen market in the Russian medical, agricultural, mining and skydiving sectors.

The planes would fill a void in Russia's potentially huge general aviation sector as the last of 17,000 Russian-made pre-World War II An2 b-planes disappear from the skies, with just three or four United States-made Cessna Caravans operating non-commercially.

Mityaev said Russia was a vast country with isolated cities and towns, had few good roads, extremes of weather, generally poor infrastructure, and its government was keen to develop a new medical aviation structure.

The P750s, which can carry three stretchers and three medical personnel and are designed to operate on very short and difficult terrain runways in extreme temperatures, would also be sold in Russia for agricultural spraying and insect eradication, firefighting, geophysical surveys for mining and oil and gas exploration, and skydiving.

Aeroproject's chief pilot, Vladimir Zhelezniak, said the P750 was unique.

"It has very good construction, very good technology, is very simple, not a big price and needs minimum service and maintenance - like a Kalashnikov."

Pacific Aerospace has sold 74 P750s since the aircraft's launch in the US market eight years ago.

Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services' Maintenance Facility Reduces Annual Lighting Costs by 72% Using Intelligent LED …

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Nov 7, 2012) - Digital Lumens today announced that Vector Aerospace, an industry-leading provider of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft operators around the globe, has upgraded a 158,000-square-foot helicopter maintenance facility to the Digital Lumens Intelligent LED Lighting System. Replacing 400 Watt Metal Halide lamps, the System is saving 72% of lighting energy costs annually, driven by integrated controls that manage lighting behavior, while delivering the high light levels required in the facility.

Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services ("Vector") in Richmond, BC, Canada has reduced lighting-related energy costs from $80,665 to $22,630, or from 51.1 to 14.3 per square foot annually. In addition to flexibility and efficiency savings, Vector management chose the Digital Lumens system for its ability to concentrate high light levels on critical work surfaces without producing glare, integrated daylight harvesting capabilities that save energy by assessing the amount of ambient light and smoothly increasing or decreasing lumen output to meet target light levels, longer life span, and quiet, buzz-free operation. The maintenance-free LED high bay fixtures also eliminate the re-lamping and re-ballasting costs associated with traditional industrial lighting alternatives.

"Before choosing the Digital Lumens system, we looked at a variety of fluorescent and LED alternatives with add-on sensors, but the quality and flexibility just were not there. It looked like sensors were an afterthought," said John Mellas, Facility Manager for Vector. "The Digital Lumens system -- with fully integrated controls and sensors -- is generations ahead of competitors. The savings are already adding up, and are increased by our ability to fine tune fixture settings to meet our ongoing operational needs."

The Vector management team evaluated a variety of lighting alternatives. They found that fluorescents and many LED fixtures disperse light at too high a level, forcing facilities to over-lamp in order to get enough light to critical work surfaces, and producing unacceptable levels of glare. Vector doesn't have any of these problems with the Digital Lumens system. Instead, Vector can direct lighting to where it is needed and modify output settings through the LightRules lighting management software.

"The aerospace industry has been wrestling with high utility bills and the difficulty of getting quality lighting to critical work surfaces for decades," said Michael Feinstein, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Digital Lumens. "We've been able to solve these challenges for the Vector facility, while improving illumination levels, maximizing energy savings, and offering a rapid project payback."

With daylight harvesting and occupancy sensors built into every fixture, the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting system provides Vector with light precisely where and when needed. The fixtures are wirelessly networked, and collect detailed operational data, which they share with the LightRules management software. LightRules also enables the facilities management team to modify lighting settings wirelessly, eliminating the need to touch light fixtures to change settings and behaviors. Vector is achieving lighting savings of more than 707,735 kWh annually at their facility.

The net figure for the third quarter was 309 million euros ($394.5 million) from 312 million euros in the same period of last year, representing a fall of 1.0 percent, the group said in a statement.

In the first nine months, however, the net outcome was 903 million euros ($1.15 billion) from 421 million euros for the same period of last year.

In the third quarter, sales rose by 15.0 percent to 12.3 billion euros, and over nine months by 14.0 percent to 37.3 billion euros.

The board stood by its forecast for earnings per share of 1.95 euros and said it expected sales to rise by more than 10.0 percent, having referred to 10.0 percent in its statement at the end of the first six months of the year.

LMI Aerospace, Inc. Announces Third Quarter 2012 Results

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 8, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LMI Aerospace, Inc. (LMIA), a leading provider of design engineering services and supplier of structural assemblies, kits and components to the aerospace, defense and technology markets, today announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2012.

Third Quarter 2012 Highlights

Third Quarter Results

Net sales for the third quarter of 2012 increased 9.1 percent to $70.6 million, including $2.2 million from the newly acquired TASS, Inc. ("TASS") subsidiary, compared to $64.8 million in the third quarter of 2011. Net income for the third quarter of 2012 was $5.6 million, or $0.48 per diluted share, compared to $4.1 million, or $0.35 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2011. Third quarter 2012 results include a pre-tax charge of $0.5 million in acquisition costs. Excluding this charge, earnings per diluted share would have been $0.51.

"As the current year has progressed, our expectation has been that sales in the Aerostructures segment would increase sequentially each quarter, and Engineering Services sales would remain at the levels experienced in the first two quarters of 2012," said Ronald S. Saks, Chief Executive Officer of LMI. "We have continued to win new business for both segments, and production rates on certain high volume programs have increased. However, delayed receipt of customer furnished engineering and program delays on certain development projects deferred approximately $7.0 million of sales into 2013. Accordingly, Aerostructures sales guidance for 2012 was reduced by $7.0 million to a mid-point of $175.0 million, and sales guidance for 2013 was increased by the same amount to a mid-point of $216.0 million. In addition, about $5.0 million in expected orders and reduced customer pulls decreased the Aerostructures segment's expected sales.

"In Engineering Services, we increased overall sales expectations by $6.0 million for the expected contribution of our newly acquired TASS subsidiary but decreased our base business forecast by $2.0 million due to uncertainty over two customer programs. We expect our Aerostructures plants to experience considerable growth again in 2013, and gross margins have improved as a result of production efficiencies and improved performance on some complex new programs. In addition, we plan to build some inventory in 2012, especially of those items deferred into 2013 to better manage the growth expected in 2013."

Aerostructures Segment

Increasing production rates and new work on the Boeing 737, 747 and 787 models combined to drive a 4.1 percent increase in net sales of large commercial aircraft products, and the Gulfstream G650 and G280 models contributed to a 10.1 percent rise in corporate and regional market net sales. Reduced sales related to the Blackhawk program were due to decreased demand for certain models at one of the company's customers and increased production at a customer owned assembly facility, which we expect to continue into future periods.

The Aerostructures segment generated gross profit of $12.9 million, or 29.3 percent of net sales, in the third quarter of 2012 versus $11.9 million, or 27.0 percent of net sales, in the third quarter of 2011. Production efficiencies led to this improvement in the segment's margins.

Selling, general and administrative expenses ("SG&A") were $7.5 million in the third quarter of 2012 versus $6.7 million in the third quarter of 2011. Included in these expenses for the third quarter of 2012 is $0.5 million in acquisition expenses.

Ball Aerospace Celebrates Suomi NPP One Year Anniversary

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite built for NASA, marked one year on orbit, Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121108/LA08510)

Suomi NPP is the bridge to the next-generation U.S. civil polar-orbiting Earth-observation satellite system. It provides continuity of critical observations for accurate weather forecasting, reliable severe storm outlooks, global measurements of atmospheric and oceanic conditions such as sea surface temperatures, ozone, and more.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses the satellite data in models for medium- and long-term weather forecasting. Suomi NPP will also improve and extend climate measurements for 30 different environmental data records of the atmosphere, land, ocean, climate, and space environment.

Under contract to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Ball Aerospace built the Suomi NPP satellite, the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite instrument aboard the satellite, integrated all five of the spacecraft's instruments, and conducted satellite testing prior to launch. Ball Aerospace is now building the successor to Suomi NPP, the JPSS-1satellite and its OMPS instrument for a 2017 launch. JPSS satellites are being developed by NASA for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"The Ball-built Suomi NPP satellite is delivering critical weather forecasting information as well as the data needed for technological and scientific advancement in climate and oceanographic science," said David L. Taylor, president and CEO of Ball Aerospace. "Ball's expertise is now being leveraged for JPSS-1 to ensure these vital global observations continue uninterrupted."

Suomi NPP was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base into a sun-synchronous orbit, producing coverage of nearly the entire Earth with 14 orbits per day. Suomi NPP orbits Earth every 102 minutes, and to date has completed more than 5,000 orbits capturing data from the Earth's land, oceans and atmosphere.

On Oct. 24, 2012, the NASA/NOAA 2012 ozone measurements were released using the Ball Aerospace-built Ozone and Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) aboard Suomi NPP for the first time.

The NPP spacecraft is a member of the Ball Configurable Platform (BCP) family of spacecraft designed for cost-effective, remote sensing applications. Its proven design accommodates a wide range of payloads, including optical applications with sub-meter resolutions and synthetic aperture radar. The NPP spacecraft bus is the eighth of 11 spacecraft built by Ball Aerospace on the same BCP core architecture. In all, this architecture has more than 50 years of successful on-orbit operations.

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. supports critical missions for national agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA and other U.S. government and commercial entities. The company develops and manufactures spacecraft, advanced instruments and sensors, components, data exploitation systems and RF solutions for strategic, tactical and scientific applications.
