Korean Air to expand aerospace business

South Korea's flag carrier seeks synergy with potential acquisition of Korea Aerospace

Korean Air is speeding up efforts to nurture the aerospace business as its future growth engine, unveiling yesterday a plan to create a 1-million-square-metre industrial cluster in Busan by 2020.

Adding to its existing 710,000-square-metre tech centre, established in 1976, the nation's largest flag carrier plans to set up a new 230,000-square-metre centre and related facilities at another 150,000-square-metre site in the coming years.

Korean Air is the only air carrier in the world that both produces and repairs aircraft. The new facilities will house factories for aircraft assembly, structure manufacturing and other research and development activities, officials said.

The company, with an injection of 1.5 trillion won (US$1.3 billion) in the expansion project, aims to increase its current 600 billion won sales in the aerospace sector to 1.6 trillion won in 2017 and 3 trillion won in 2020.

"We plan to elevate our aerospace business to the stage, in which we can produce mid-sized airplanes for ourselves by 2020," Korean Air president Ji Chang-hoon told reporters.

"About 50 per cent of the global airplane market is dominated by Airbus and Boeing, and Korean Air spends 2 trillion won every year buying their planes. Based on our buying power, we also could secure orders from both companies."

The company also expected to create synergy with its potential acquisition of the nation's sole aircraft maker Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

Korean Air joined the bidding war to buy KAI in August and the race gained fresh momentum with the unexpected participation of Hyundai Heavy Industries in September.

The final bid is scheduled to start on November 30.

NASA taps Boulder's Ball Aerospace for upcoming TEMPO mission

Boulder-based Ball Aerospace & Technologies will help build a space-based instrument for NASA to monitor air pollutants across North America, officials announced Monday.

NASA selected Ball Aerospace as a member of its Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution mission. The TEMPO mission is aimed at tracking ozone, aerosols and other trace gases over North America to gauge how pollution affects climate change and air quality.

The TEMPO team, led by the Cambridge, Mass.-based Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, will build a geostationary ultraviolet-visible spectrometer, officials said. Completion of the TEMPO instrument is scheduled for September 2017.

TEMPO is expected to launch as a hosted payload on a commercial communications satellite. The mission costs -- excluding the launch vehicle and expenses related to integration with the satellite -- will be capped at $90 million, officials said.

Ball Aerospace is a subsidiary of Broomfield-based Ball Corp. (NYSE: BLL).

Parker Aerospace and WheelTug Announce Agreement

AVON, OH--(Marketwire - Nov 19, 2012) - WheelTug plc is pleased to announce that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Aircraft Wheel & Brake Division of Parker Aerospace, whereby Parker will be the exclusive supplier of wheels for the WheelTug system on the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737NG families of aircraft. Parker and WheelTug have been collaborating on this project for some months, and look forward to bringing the WheelTug system to market.

"Parker is widely respected and highly capable," says Isaiah Cox, CEO of WheelTug plc. "We look forward to working with them on this exciting project, and value the technical expertise they bring to WheelTug's development. Many of the current development partners, such as ICE Corp, have worked with Parker for many years on aircraft projects and look forward to applying their considerable aviation prowess to this program."

Michael Walasinski, Managing Director of Aircraft Wheel and Brake, says, "We have worked with WheelTug's team on this project for most of 2012. We are excited about the scale of the business opportunity, the technical expertise of the WheelTug partners, and our positive working relationship."

The WheelTug aircraft drive system uses high-performance electric motors, installed in the nose gear wheels of an aircraft, to provide full mobility while on the ground, replacing tug vehicles and the use of jet engines for pushback and taxi.

Current commercial aviation practice utilizes a tug for aircraft gate pushback, while forward taxi is powered by the aircraft's engines. Typically, a taxiing Boeing 737 burns 24 to 27 pounds of fuel per minute. The WheelTug uses only four pounds of fuel per minute because it is electrically powered by the aircraft's auxiliary power unit (APU). This represents an 80% reduction in ground operation fuel consumption.

In addition to lower ground operation fuel consumption, other benefits of the WheelTug aircraft drive systems include: substantially reduced carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, increased safety and flexibility of operations, faster turnaround times, reduced engine wear and repair costs, and decreased noise pollution. WheelTug estimates the total savings at over US$500,000 per aircraft per year. WheelTug systems will be offered to airlines entirely on a lease, or power-by-the-hour model, so that the systems can be installed and operated on aircraft without any capital expenditure on the part of airline customers.

Other WheelTug partner companies include Gables Engineering, Resource Group, Co-Operative Industries, ICE Corporation, Endeavor Analysis, and Dynetic Systems.

WheelTug plc successfully installed and tested the first in-wheel WheelTug system in Prague in June. Video from the tests is available at: http://media.wheeltug.com.

Ball Aerospace Selected by NASA for TEMPO Air Pollution Mission

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. is part of a team selected to build the first space-based instrument to monitor major air pollutants across the North American continent for NASA's Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) mission.

Led by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Mass., the TEMPO team will build a geostationary ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectrometer to continuously measure ozone, aerosols and other trace gases over greater North America. The geostationary position of the instrument will allow delivery of regional, hourly readouts of atmosphere data during daylight hours. This data will advance air quality research on how air pollution affects climate change and air quality on a continental scale.

"While Ball is at the forefront of low Earth orbit instrument development, the TEMPO spectrometer will be the company's first geostationary instrument for NASA," said Cary Ludtke, vice president and general manager for Ball's Civil and Operational Space business unit. "TEMPO takes advantage of our expertise and technology developed for previous ultraviolet-visible instruments that have already flown or are currently on orbit."

Those instruments include the Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) flying aboard the nation's newest climate and weather satellite, Suomi NPP, and the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE). The sophisticated optical system built by Ball Aerospace for the James Webb Space Telescope relies on the same UV-VIS heritage.

NASA anticipates the TEMPO instrument will catch a ride on a commercial communications satellite as a hosted payload when it is completed in September 2017. Mission costs will be capped at $90 million, excluding the launch vehicle and integration to the selected satellite platform.

"With TEMPO's assistance you may eventually check your smart phone, for example, to obtain a read-out on your city's current air quality information before you lace up your sneakers and head out for a run," said Ludtke.

Led by the Smithsonian's principal investigator, Kelly Chance, TEMPO is part of NASA's Earth Venture Instrument program that includes small, targeted science investigations designed to complement NASA's larger research missions. TEMPO is NASA's first Earth Venture Instrument award under the agency's Earth System Science Pathfinder program. In addition to Ball Aerospace, the TEMPO team includes NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, N.C.; and several U.S. universities and research organizations.

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. supports critical missions for national agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA and other U.S. government and commercial entities. The company develops and manufactures spacecraft, advanced instruments and sensors, components, data exploitation systems and RF solutions for strategic, tactical and scientific applications. Women are increasingly ascending to top posts at aerospace firms

At a time when federal budget cuts are reshaping the nation's aerospace industry, a far different makeover is underway in the executive suites of some of the country's biggest defense contractors.

Lockheed Martin Corp., the world's largest defense firm, announced this month that electronics whiz Marillyn A. Hewson would become chief executive the first woman to take on that role at the company.

The move came abruptly after the Bethesda, Md., company's incoming chief executive, Christopher E. Kubasik, was forced out after an ethics investigation confirmed he had a "close personal relationship" with a subordinate employee.

It was an announcement that might have drawn much greater attention from the nation's defense establishment in Washington if it hadn't come the same day CIA Director David Petraeus suddenly resigned amid headline-rich reports of an extramarital affair.

After all, no aerospace firm so large or influential has ever been run by a woman. Hewson's promotion followed the summer announcement that Phebe Novakovic would take over as chief executive at General Dynamics, the nation's fifth-largest defense firm, in Fairfax, Va.

Both take over the top posts Jan. 1, as female engineers, scientists and managers who joined the industry during the Cold War are rising to prominence in a staid industry long dominated by men. Although women have climbed to the top of other industries for decades, aerospace has gone without women at the top until recent years.

"The ascension of women like Marillyn Hewson and Phebe Novakovic to the top of the corporate ladder suggests that while the glass ceiling in aerospace and defense may not have been entirely shattered, it's certainly become more transparent," said Marion Blakey, chief executive of the Aerospace Industries Assn. trade group.

Come Jan. 1, there will be a record 21 women who serve as chief executives of firms on the Fortune 500 list of the nation's largest public companies, including Hewson and Novakovic.

Deborah Soon, senior vice president of strategy at Catalyst, a nonprofit organization that tracks the progress of women in the business world, said parity is still a long way off.

"We look forward to the day when a woman leading an aerospace company is no longer news," she said.
