Commercial aerospace has experienced a drastic decrease in demand for passenger travel and changing customer behaviors with the recent distancing restrictions, which could result in a higher demand for narrow-body aircraft. The impact of COVID-19 has also affected the commercial aerospace manufacturing supply chain, particularly for mid-to-lower-tier suppliers.

Deloitte has reported that the defense sector has remained stable and military projects have held strategic priority as the federal government continues to strengthen the defense industrial base (DIB).

The company noted that while the defense sectors rate of growth may decrease in 2020, companies were largely insulated from large-scale disruption by steady defense budgets and beneficial policy decisions by the Department of Defense (DoD). While the sector has experienced temporary disruptions to defense supply chains, delays are expected to be minor.

In addition, M&A activity is expected to decrease as companies focus on liquidity as opposed to expansion. Deloittes report noted that companies are likely to become cautious within M&A. New policies that have restricted foreign investment in key components of the defense industrial base (DIB) could prevent international M&A deals in the near term.

To combat the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has posed, Deloitte stated that digital technologies were identified as the most important factor to combat fallout. These technologies will enhance productivity, efficiency and workplace safety.

Advanced technologies are expected to drive survival and recovery of companies and enable them to better position themselves by accelerating the adoption of advanced robotics and automation, which will make the manufacturing process more efficient as companies operate with reduced workforces.

Farnborough Show Goes Online With FIA Connect Webinars – Aviation International News

The FIA Connect event will run online from July 20 to 24 as Farnborough International organizers attempt to maintain at least a degree of the powerful connection the biennial airshow forges among thousands of companies across the aerospace, defense, and space industry. There will be no roar of flying display jets, but through an extensive program of webinars, participants will hear about how the industry is responding to the crisis that forced the cancellation of the 2020 air show back in March.

This will mark the first time outside influencesin this case Covid-19have forced a major international airshow to completely reinvent itself as an online event. We have sought to create something completely new and this is an opportunity for the industry to come out of its shell and talk about the future, Farnborough International CEO Gareth Rogers told a July 13 press conference.

The cancellation of this years show posed a significant challenge to the viability of Farnborough International, which is a subsidiary of the UK industry association ADS. The company has had to move quickly to protect the long-term future of the 72-year-old air show and it insists that the event will return to its usual format in 2022.

Last week, organizers offered exhibitors a credit covering up to 60 percent of fees already paid for the 2020 show. This is to be used for their participation in the 2022 event. Rogers acknowledged that companies may have been hoping for direct refunds, but he explained that would not have been financially viable. We had to achieve a balance between returning what [money] we can [to exhibitors] while ensuring the future of the air show. Its been a tough process, he commented.

As of July 13, before the full speaker lineup was announced, around 5,000 people had registered for FIA Connect, representing around 300 to 400 companies. Organizers said they expect between 20,000 and 30,000 people to participate in the online sessions during the course of the week.

In addition to the webinar program, FIA Connect willinclude an online version of its Meet the Buyer program to help companies engage with prospective clients across the supply chain. On July 24, it will hold the Farnborough Friday event, which gives young people the chance to learn more about career opportunities in the industry and the educational paths that support them.

The packed FIA Connect agenda consists of no fewer than 77 separate online sessions over the course of five days with 149 speakers and panelists. The environmental sustainability of aviation and the industrys response to Covid recovery challenges serve asrecurring themes through the program.

The webinars are free to attend but require pre-registration. Sessions are pre-recorded to allow flexibility in when viewers can tune in.

FIA Connects opening ceremony on July 20 will include top industry leaders. Confirmed speakers include Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, BAE Systems CEO Charles Woodburn, Safran Seats CEO Victoria Foy, Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo, and Meggitt CEO and ADS President Tony Wood.

Also on July 20, there will be a session on aviation sustainability addressing policy changes need to ensure environmental improvements in the context of the impact of Covid-19. Speakers will include UK transport secretary Grant Shapps, Etihad Aviation Group CEO Tony Douglas, Air BP commercial development manager Tom Parsons, Boeing sustainability, strategy, and corporate development vice president Chris Raymond, and Rolls-Royce chief technology officer Paul Stein.

The customized HMD development program with this Tier-1 Aerospace firm that is targeting their commercial and defense customer base has continued to expand and move towards volume production orders since it was first announced in 2018. Phase IV of this program was originally announced by Vuzix on April 20, 2020. To date, the Company has now received approximately $1,300,000 in non-recurring engineering services revenues on this program. As part of the next steps, the customer and the Company are now negotiating a supply agreement for volume production of this customized HMD waveguide and HD display engine product, with deliveries commencing as early as fall 2020. Contemplated quantities should represent a significant revenue opportunity for Vuzix, with ongoing deliveries over several years depending on end customer demand.

Boom Supersonic's XB-1 subsonic demonstrator aircraft will roll out the companys Denver, Colorado hangar onOctober 7, the company said in a July 8 press release.

Due to COVID-19 social distancing recommendations, Boom plans on holding a virtual online unveiling of the XB-1. During the rollout event, Booms lead engineers, test pilots and company leadership will discuss the design, flight and handling criteria for XB-1.

The rollout is a key milestone toward its first flight expected to occur in 2021 to demonstrate key technologies, such as advanced carbon fiber composite construction, computer-optimized high-efficiency aerodynamics, and an efficient supersonic propulsion system.

Honeywell Aerospace has received an Federal Aviation Administration Technical Standard Order (TSO) for its IntuVue RDR-7000 radar system, which the company first introduce at the 2019 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE).

The 3D radar is described by Honeywell as being fully automated, scanning from zero up to 60,000 feet, and up to 320 nautical miles in front of the aircraft.

Larger business and passenger jets have benefitted from IntuVue for years, and soon those same capabilities will be available on many more platforms, said Mike Ingram, vice president, Avionics, Honeywell Aerospace. Pilots of these smaller aircraft will have the same 3D capabilities, full automation and predictive weather insights to help them make critical decisions to navigate weather ahead of and around the aircraft.

Bombardiers Global 5000, Dassault Falcons 900C/EX/LX and Cessnas Citation X are among the aircraft RDR-7000 is currently available on, with initial delivers expected to begin in the third quarter.

Gogo has introduced new software configuration changes to its in-flight connectivity network that will enable pilots and passengers to connect at 3,000 feet above ground level (AGL) in place of the previous 10,000 feet AGL access point.

An additional 15 to 20 minutes of connectivity can be expected on most flights, a benefit to operators of shorter regional flights.

"The additional connectivity time is a significant enhancement and will deliver even more value to customers," said Sergio Aguirre, president of Gogo Business Aviation. "It makes connectivity available to those who believed inflight Wi-Fi wasn't an option because they fly shorter routes.

Availability at 3,000 feet will begin within a phased process to enable service through ground-system configuration and remote software updates, Gogo said in a statement. Approximately 1,300 AVANCE systems flying in business aviation will benefit from this change, as will roughly 650, commercial airline regional jets equipped with Gogo connectivity.

On Friday, July 3, OneWeb announced the U.K. government through the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy will acquire the company by providing $500 million, withBharti Global Limitedproviding another $500 million.

The government of New South Wales, Australia, awarded a $700,000 grant AMSL Aero to support development of a four-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

The project, in development for a few years, relies on battery storage but plains to incorporate hydrogen fuel cells when that technology is more mature. Andrew Moore, chief executive of AMSL Aero, describes his goal as to provide low-cost, zero emissions transport to better connect Australian cities such as Sydney and Canberra a distance of 155 miles.

Government funds will be used to establish a testing facility and conduct test flights in the region of Narromine. The facility will be built in the next six to 12 months.

The FAA awarded $1.6 million to a group of five companies to develop and test a Contingency Management Platform intended to further fault detection and risk mitigation efforts for unmanned traffic management (UTM) systems. The team will test the platform at the New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss International Airport in collaboration with Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research (NUAIR) and Oneida County.

The core health and usage monitoring and fault mitigation software will be provided by Syracuse, NY-based ResilienX, incorporating a TRL-9 cybersecurity module provided by Assured Information Security (AIS), micro-weather services from TruWeather, and beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) airspace visualization and display information from Kongsberg Geospatial. Systems integration will be led by Beavercreek, OH-based CAL Analytics.
