‘Bangalore aerospace park can touch $20bn revenue’

The author has posted comments on this articleAnshul Dhamija, TNN | Dec 25, 2013, 01.56AM IST BANGALORE: The aerospace industry in Bangalore has the potential to achieve $20 billion in revenues over the next 10 to 15 years if the state government is able to nurture an ecosystem that attracts global companies, said the India head of UTC Aerospace Systems (UTCAS), Chris Rao.

Part of the $64 billion US-based United Technologies, UTCAS is the largest MNC aerospace manufacturer in India and was part of the task force that helped bring out the country's first aerospace policy in Karnataka.

"Bangalore is the aerospace capital of this country. However, the government has to attract companies to invest here," said Rao, VP, UTCAS.

Bangalore has the right talent pool, which has been nurtured over the years by public sector enterprises such as HAL, DRDO and ISRO.

Rao said, "If they (government) go about the project (aerospace park) by just selling land parcels then they aren't developing an ecosystem concept. You would get speculators (buying into real estate) rather than industry guys and that's where it's at right now." He added that for tier I companies to set up shop, an aerospace SEZ would have to have tier III and IV suppliers as well as academic and training institutions.

"We are telling the government to develop the park as an ecosystem. Give it to an ecosystem developer, not a real estate developer because that's where the problem starts. Industry should invest in technology and people, not in land and infrastructure," said Rao.

At present, the aerospace industry is concentrated in the US and Europe. With most companies looking to expand outside of these two markets, India and China are gaining a lot of attention. However, China has been facing concerns over intellectual property rights, so aerospace companies are looking keenly at India.

UTCAS, which got a foothold in to India through its global $19 billion acquisition of Goodrich two years ago, manufactures evacuation slides, lighting systems, cargo systems, seating systems, sensors and integrated systems, and electrical power systems for Airbus and Boeing aircraft. "On an average about 60% of the global production of these products are done out of Bangalore," said Rao.

UTCAS employs close to 2,000 people and has outgrown its 700,000 sqft facility located in the IT hub of Whitefield. "We want to reach a stage where we can design, develop, manufacture and support products from India. There are still areas in which we need to shore up our competencies, especially on the design side," added Rao.

PPG Aerospace Expands Operations In Japan

MIYOSHI, JAPAN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has expanded its aerospace business operations in Japan with the relocation of its application support center to a site in Miyoshi that supports increased production capacity, adds warehouse space and affords new service capabilities. The new site in Miyoshi Kurozasa Industrial Park includes a 1,994-square-meter manufacturing facility and office as well as an 890-square-meter stand-alone on-site warehouse.

The larger site, near Nagoya, enables PPG Aerospace to expand its capabilities in the region as Japans role as a major aerospace center continues to grow, according to Paul Bowman, PPG Aerospace general manager for Asia Pacific. PPG established operations at its former application support center in Handa City in 2005 after serving the Japanese aerospace market from a facility in Tokyo for sealants and coatings distribution.

We designed the ASC in Miyoshi as a brand-new operation with the ability to expand upon our current customers needs and to include all of our other product and service platforms that could not be accommodated at the previous location, Bowman said.

Atsushi Suda, PPG ASC-Japan business manager, said having a stand-alone, PPG-owned warehouse on-site gives the company the ability to offer customers just-in-time and point-of-use delivery of its products. It is a big step forward to begin offering Total Service Solutions chemical management for our major customers, Suda said. The modular approach for customized chemical management can include turnkey outsourcing of chemical and fluid management, process and point-of-use program management, and logistics.

We also have expanded capacity for custom packaging of premixed frozen sealant with this larger plant to support increased commercial and regional aerospace demand, Suda said.

The ASC repackages sealant for delivery to customers in packaging designed for easy application without waste. It also provides PRC(R) seal caps used in the aerospace industry to seal fasteners with reduced waste and higher quality. Packaging and dispensing solutions are provided to customers with SEMCO(R) packaging and application systems that include Value-Added Packaging for aerospace sealants, aerospace coatings, and adhesives and solder paste for electronics. In addition, the new ASC offers color-matching and local blending capabilities for aerospace coatings.

The staff of PPG ASC-Japan, which is located at 1123-1, Komochimatsu, Kurozasa, in Miyoshi Kurozasa Industrial Park, provides regional support to original-equipment and maintenance customers in commercial, business and military aviation as well as military land-based transportation. The ASC is one of 16 PPG operates around the world to provide local sales, customer service and technical support for aerospace OEM customers, airlines and aftermarket customers for PPG Aerospace sealants, coatings and transparencies.

PPG Aerospace is the aerospace products and services business of PPG Industries. PPG Aerospace PRC-DeSoto is the leading global producer of aerospace sealants, coatings, and packaging and application systems. PPG Aerospace Transparencies is the worlds largest supplier of aircraft windshields, windows and canopies.
