New ST Aerospace aviation centre opens

SINGAPORE: The ST Aerospace aviation centre at Seletar Aerospace Park officially opened on Wednesday, bringing a new addition to the aviation scene in Singapore.

Covering more than 75,000 square metres, the three-storey centre will offer integrated aviation services to international aircraft operators.

At the opening of the centre, Senior Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo had some words of advice for ST Aerospace.

Mrs Teo said: As we grow, it cannot be more of the same, it has to be qualitatively different, and this will require us to be imaginative, creative and at the same time quite disciplined in the types of activities we choose to pursue -- not going for everything, being quite careful, thoughtful about the kind of activities that will help our aviation hub be different from others.

The company seems to have found one such niche, as it focuses on the growing demand for pilot training.

Goh Yong Kiat, executive vice president of Aviation and Training Services at ST Aerospace, said: The aviation landscape in the world and particularly in this region is growing in a very dynamic pace. You can see airlines growing, their fleets are expanding.

So, because of that, you will need more pilots, more engineers. An aviation centre like this is poised or positioned to meet this demand for pilots, quality engineers and technicians.

Experts agree that ST Aerospace will be well-positioned going forward, especially with its training academy.

Paul Ng, global head of aviation at Stephenson Harwood LLP, said: In the next 20 years, the industry will require several hundred thousand pilots -- 40 per cent of those pilots will be making their way to the Asia Pacific. So there is a huge demand for pilots.

"You've already seen other competitors, like in Australia, which are expanding, building new wings to their facilities... so having a facility to be able to (cater to more pilots and train them faster) will be a competitive edge for ST Aerospace.

SAM to expand aerospace business here

GEORGE TOWN: Singapore Aerospace Manufacturing Pte Ltd (SAM), a leading manufacturer of critical aero-engine components whose clientele include some of the worlds major aviation players, is looking to grow its aerospace business in Malaysia.

The move is expected to translate into more capital investments and job opportunities and raise Malaysias profile on the world aerospace map.

We are exploring several aerospace-related opportunities and are in negotiations with our customers. We expect to increase our aerospace activities in Malaysia over the next five years, said SAM group president and chief executive officer Jeffrey Goh.

SAMs Penang operations supply critical components for Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Mitsubishi aircraft, which include engine cases for commercial aircraft.

Its subsidiary, SAM Engineering and Equipment (M) Bhd (formerly LKT Industrial Bhd), located at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial

Another subsidiary, Aviatron (M) Sdn Bhd, at Penang Science Park in Bukit Minyak on the mainland, produces aerospace structure or mechanical parts.

We have several options on growing the aerospace business here, said Goh, adding that manufacturing activities could involve beams and four- to five-axis machining work.

It has gone full steam ahead with work for engine casings of the Boeing 787.

We are in full production and are ahead in meeting our clients requirements. By yearend, we are hopeful of going into full production for A350 aircraft parts. Currently, we are at the prototyping stage.

Meanwhile, Goh is appealing to the government to continue giving tax incentives and providing human resources in engineering to facilitate the companys investment here.

Ball Aerospace Completes Risk Reduction Test for JPSS-1 Satellite

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has successfully completed the SpaceWire Inter-operability Test for the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) satellite and has begun spacecraft bus integration. Ball will power-up the spacecraft for the first time later this month as build progresses toward an early 2017 launch.

JPSS-1 will provide continuity for accurate predictions of severe weather currently provided by the Ball-built Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite launched in 2011. JPSS-1 was procured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

"With the SpaceWire risk reduction test behind us, we have initiated spacecraft bus integration and are proceeding ahead of schedule toward instrument integration in November of this year," saidCary Ludtke, vice president and general manager for Ball's Operational Space business unit.

SpaceWire is a spacecraft high-speed communications data-handling network. The JPSS-1test was a risk reduction activity to provide early verification of the network's architecture design and implementation. SpaceWire, which replaced the IEEE1394 architecture used on Suomi-NPP, helps reduce system integration costs and promotes compatibility between spacecraft data handling equipment and the onboard Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) and the Cross-track Infrared Sounder instruments (CrIS).

The scope of the SpaceWire Inter-operability Test, conducted under both normal and fault conditions, proved the functionality of links using flight-like engineering models of key JPSS-1 spacecraft bus subsystems and engineering models for VIIRS and CrIS. The three additional JPSS-1 instruments include the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder, the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System, and the Ball Aerospace-built Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS).

Ball is under contract to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center to design and build the JPSS-1 satellite bus and the OMPS instrument, integrate all instruments, and perform satellite-level testing and launch support.

JPSS-1 is a polar-orbiting satellite that will provide the National Weather Service critical data to forecast severe weather events up to 10 days in advance, aiding our Nation's leaders, decision makers, emergency managers and media to better provide increased warnings to the public. Shannon Aerospace confirms pension scheme move

Aviation maintenance company Shannon Aerospace has confirmed that it ceased contributions to its defined benefit pension scheme at midnight last night.

SIPTU members at the company, which employs 500 people, are to start a ballot for industrial action on Friday in opposition to the company's move.

The union said the pension fund is in surplus and the move is unnecessary.

Last week, staff overwhelmingly rejected a Labour Court recommendation calling on both sides to maintain the status quo to allow for two months of negotiations.

This would have seen the company continue contributions to the defined contribution pension scheme during that period.

However, in a statement, Shannon Aerospace confirmed it gave notice to the company's pension trustees that it would cease contributions to its defined benefit pension scheme with effect from midnight 3 February.

The statement points out that despite the company's acceptance of the recent Labour Court recommendation, it was unable to agree a framework for talks with employee representatives on the pension issue.

It said that from today pension contributions from the company will be paid into the already existing defined contribution pension scheme.

Shannon Aerospace said the company is committed to maintaining pension cash contributions for each employee at the current levels.

Mukilteo’s Electroimpact named aerospace company of the year

The company was hailed for its "unique style of operation, cutting edge tooling and for bringing bold ideas to fruition," according to the aerospace alliance.

"The company has worked to improve our industry through legislation, education, training and community service. Electroimpact's philanthropic generosity has benefitted STEM, FIRST Robotics and the aerospace industry as a whole," according to a release from the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance.

Electroimpact makes automated assembly equipment for the aerospace industry. Its customers include Boeing, Airbus and other aerospace companies around the world. The company has more than 600 employees in the U.S. and abroad.

Peter Zieve established Electroimpact in 1986 after he earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington.

Electroimpact will be honored Wednesday by aerospace alliance chairman JC Hall at next week's annual aerospace conference in Lynnwood.

The aerospace company of the year is one of five aerospace industry excellence awards given out by the aerospace alliance, which promotes the growth and success of the industry in the Northwest.
