Dementia risk falls for millions as chance of developing the disease is now 13% lower than 2010 – Brinkwire

Dementia rates among men are falling three times quicker than they are in women, according to a major study.

Harvard University researchers found the risk of developing the incurable disorder has dropped by 13 per cent every decade since 1988. Rates have plummeted for men by 24 per cent every ten years, while for women it has been a more gradual decline (8 per cent).

Men were previously far more at risk than females of suffering from dementia but the risk between sexes has now levelled out, experts said.

In 1995, the average European or American person over the age of 75 had a one in four chance of getting dementia. Today, it is now less than one in five.

The researchers say healthier lifestyles and fewer smokers could be behind the drop in risk, becausepoor blood circulation which is hugely influenced by diet, exercise and drinking has a significant impact on the brain.

But, despite the risk of developing the memory-robbing disorder being lower, there are still a growing number of people being diagnosed with dementia. This is because more and more people are being born in the developed world and people are living longer than they ever have.

In the UK there are an estimated 850,000 people living with dementia, while in the US there are around 5million. These numbers are stillprojected to treble by 2050.

But, if the current decline in rates continue, Harvard researchers say there could be far fewer cases inhigh-income countries than projected.

For the latest research, published in the journal Neurology, Harvard researchers reviewed data from seven large studies from around the world with a total of 49,202 people.

The studies followed men and women over-65 in Europe and North America for at least 15 years from between 1988 and 2015.

Participants health was monitored with in-person exams, questionnaires and brain scans.

Of the near-50,000 volunteers, 4,253 (8.6 per cent) developed dementia,a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Academics did not provide any raw numbers to illustrate exactly how the incidence rate changed over time.

They only gave data for how many people were diagnosed with dementia overall in each of the different cohorts.

But an analysis revealed rates dropped over time in each of the seven studies at around 13 per cent per decade.

The papers found dementia incidence declined by13 per cent per calendar decade and that the drop was consistent across studies.

The fall, which experts said was consistent across studies, was more pronounced in men (24 per cent) than in women (8 per cent).

The data also included a separate assessment of Alzheimers disease, a specific form of dementia that accounts for seven in 10 dementia cases.

Rates for Alzheimers also had a similar drop in incidence, falling by about 16 per cent per decade.

But the study found that age was still a huge risk factor for developing dementia. The risk was 16 times greater for those above the age of 85, compared to those under 70.

Dr Albert Hofman, chairman of the department of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and lead author of the research believes improved heart health and education are behind the falling rates.

There is now a growing understanding that poor blood circulation which is hugely influenced by diet, exercise and drinking has a significant impact on blood vessels in the brain.

Education is also now known to have a protective effect, with those who receive a better schooling more likely to continue to carry out complex thinking throughout their lives which reduces dementia risk by keeping the brain active.

Dr John Morris, director of the Center for Aging at Washington University in St. Louis, told The New York Times: It is such a strong study and such a powerful message. It suggests that the risk is modifiable.

Gill Livingston, from University College London in the UK, said the findings show again that some of dementia is already being prevented with the changes which have taken place in these societies.

She added: We know that worldwide 40 per cent of dementias are potentially preventable.

Sara Imarisio, research head at Alzheimers Research UK, told The Times newspaper there: We know recent decades have seen a radical decline in smoking rates for men. While many people mayhave been persuaded to stop smoking due to an increased risk of cancer or heart disease, it is also a key risk factor for dementia.

Last week a major study said hundreds of thousands of people could ward off dementia by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Some 40 per cent of cases could be avoided or delayed, a comprehensive review of the evidence concludes.

Eating less, exercising more, and cutting out alcohol and cigarettes significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia in later life, researchers said.

Air pollution, as well as depression and social in old age, also increases the risk.

In 2017 a previous Lancet review identified nine elements which contributed to dementia risk.

The new paper updates this and adds three new risk factors alcohol intake, air pollution and head injuries.

The researchers who include world-leading British scientists from University College London, Cambridge, Exeter, Edinburgh and Manchester stressed that the majority of dementia risk is down to genetics and other uncontrollable factors.

But they said the new findings show people have a huge degree of power to determine their own fate.

Politicians, meanwhile, must take responsibility for reducing some of the risk, they said particularly by addressing the growing problem of air pollution.

Researcher Professor Clive Ballard of the University of Exeter, said: Our findings present an exciting opportunity to improve millions of lives across the world by preventing or delaying dementia, through healthier lifestyle to include more exercise, being a healthy weight and stopping smoking, and good medical treatment of risk factors like high blood pressure.

One important less well known risk factor is hearing loss in mid-life, with emerging evidence that wearing hearing aids may be protective.

This analysis shows theres real potential to improve brain health by taking action.

The researchers said one of the biggest controllable factors is poor education, which is responsible for 7 per cent of dementia cases.

Hearing loss in middle age is responsible for 8 per cent of cases and brain injury for 3 per cent.

High blood pressure from middle age contributes 2 per cent, obesity 1 per cent and drinking more than 21 units a week 1 per cent.

Smoking in old age contributes 5 per cent of cases, physical inactivity 2 per cent, diabetes 1 per cent, depression 4 per cent, isolation 4 per cent and air pollution 2 per cent.

Study leader Professor Gill Livingston of UCL, who presented the paper yesterday to the Alzheimers Association International Conference, said politicians could do much to reduce these risks.

Our report shows that it is within the power of policy-makers and individuals to prevent and delay a significant proportion of dementia, with opportunities to make an impact at each stage of a persons life.

We can reduce risks by creating active and healthy environments for communities, where physical activity is the norm, better diet is accessible for all, and exposure to excessive alcohol is minimised.

Fiona Carragher, director of research at the Alzheimers Society, which part-funded the study, said: While we dont have all the answers yet, we can take action now to tackle the risk factors within our control, including excessive drinking, obesity and high blood pressure.

Meanwhile, we need public health policies to address other factors, such as air pollution and inequalities in childhood education.

Dr Rosa Sancho, head of research at Alzheimers Research UK, added: While theres no sure-fire way of preventing dementia, the best way to keep your brain healthy as you age is to stay physically and mentally active, eat a healthy balanced diet, not smoke, drink only within the recommended limits and keep weight, cholesterol and blood pressure in check.

With no treatments yet able to slow or stop the onset of dementia, taking action to reduce these risks is an important part of our strategy for tackling the condition.

This report underlines the importance of acting at a personal and policy level to reduce dementia risk.

Professor Jennifer Rusted of the University of Sussex, added: The big picture here is that an individuals dementia risk is a complex of many factors that impact differently through the lifespan, and lifestyle choices and changes can quite significantly reduce risk of dementia in later lifeIf you can work to mitigate any of these multiple factors then you can at least push back the age at which cognitive impairment emerges to affect your independent living and quality of life.

Sir Alan Fersht FMedSci FRS, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Chemistry and former Master of Gonville and Caius College, is awarded the Copley Medal for the development and application of methods to describe protein folding pathways at atomic resolution, revolutionising our understanding of these processes.

Most of us who become scientists do so because science is one of the most rewarding and satisfying of careers and we actually get paid for doing what we enjoy and for our benefitting humankind. Recognition of ones work, especially at home, is icing on the cake, said Sir Alan. Like many Copley medallists, I hail from a humble immigrant background and the first of my family to go to university. If people like me are seen to be honoured for science, then I hope it will encourage young people in similar situations to take up science.

As the latest recipient of the Royal Societys premier award, Sir Alan joins an elite group of scientists, that includes Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Dorothy Hodgkin, and more recently Professor John Goodenough (2020) for his research on the rechargeable lithium battery, Peter Higgs (2015), the physicist who hypothesised the existence of the Higgs Boson, and DNA fingerprinting pioneer Alec Jeffreys (2014).

Professor Barry Everitt FMedSci FRS, from the Department of Psychology and former Master of Downing College, receives the Croonian Medal and Lecture for research which has elucidated brain mechanisms of motivation and applied them to important societal issues such as drug addiction.

Professor Everitt said: In addition to my personal pride about having received this prestigious award, I hope that it helps draw attention to experimental addiction research, its importance and potential.

Professor Herbert Huppert FRS of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, and a Fellow of Kings College, receives a Royal Medal for outstanding achievements in the physical sciences. He has been at the forefront of research in fluid mechanics. As an applied mathematician he has consistently developed highly original analysis of key natural and industrial processes. Further to his research, he has chaired policy work on how science can help defend against terrorism, and carbon capture and storage in Europe.

In addition to the work for which they are recognised with an award, several of this years recipients have also been working on issues relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Julia Gog of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and a Fellow of Queens College, receives the Rosalind Franklin Award and Lecture for her achievements in the field of mathematics. Her expertise in infectious diseases and virus modelling has seen her contribute to the pandemic response, including as a participant at SAGE meetings. The STEM project component of her award will produce resources for Key Stage 3 (ages 11-14) maths pupils and teachers exploring the curriculum in the context of modelling epidemics and infectious diseases and showing how maths can change the world for the better.

The Societys Michael Faraday Prize is awarded to Sir David Spiegelhalter OBE FRS, of the Winton Centre for Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication and a Fellow of Churchill College, for bringing key insights from the disciplines of statistics and probability vividly home to the public at large, and to key decision-makers, in entertaining and accessible ways, most recently through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Awards are given to individuals and organizations that make an exceptional effort to model, encourage and promote health and fitness in Kansas. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30. Award recipients will be recognized at the Community Health Promotion Summit in January 2021.

Boost your health with a step counter – Blaine Northern Light

Its summer in Whatcom County. That generally means pleasant weather, usually not too hot or rainy, and longer daylight hours. Add in the coronavirus pandemic and many people are getting their daily exercise outdoors, often with walking or running. Using a fitness tracker to monitor activity levels is popular, often with a goal of taking 10,000 steps each day.

For some people, that goal of 10,000 steps is motivating and helps them be physically active. But for others, especially if they arent reaching their goal, its discouraging, reduces motivation and may lead to less physical activity.

Have you wondered how scientists came to recommend 10,000 steps per day as a fitness goal? Well, the truth is, the idea has little to no scientific research behind it. In 2019, Harvard Medical School researcher I-Min Lee looked into the history of the 10,000 steps a day goal and discovered that it most likely originated in the 60s when a Japanese company marketed a pedometer called Manpo-kei, which in Japanese means 10,000 steps meter. Most likely the name was chosen because the Japanese character for 10,000 looks a little like a man walking. Ads for the step counter said, Lets all walk 10,000 steps a day. This idea has persisted through the decades.

While theres nothing wrong with that goal, it may not be necessary for achieving health and longevity. Multiple researchers have concluded that while 10,000 steps is a good goal, there is nothing magical about that number and even 7,000-8,000 steps can improve health and longevity. (The average American adult takes about 3,000-5,000 steps a day.) Or, looking at exercise goals another way, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has done, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week (which correlates to 7,000-8,000 steps a day).

The human body was designed for movement and physical activity is important for good health. Physical activity like walking can help control blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. It can also stimulate creative thinking and is associated with living longer and healthier.

So if using a step counter or fitness tracker motivates you to exercise and you reach 10,000 steps a day (or more), thats great. But dont be discouraged if you dont reach that number. Make it your goal to be physically active above the level of your normal daily activity and enjoy the beauty of summer in the Pacific Northwest.

Boston is among the top 10 fittest cities in America, according to a new study by the American College of Sports Medicine and the Anthem foundation.

The study, released in the American Fitness Index, used 33 health behaviors, chronic diseases, and community infrastructure indicators to rank 100 cities.

Cities with the highest scores are considered to have strong community fitness, a concept analogous to individuals having strong personal fitness, the city states. Cities that rank near the top of the Fitness Index have more strengths and resources that support healthy living and fewer challenges that hinder it.

Boston came in at number 10, cracking the top 10 list for the first time, according to WCVB. Arlington, Virginia was named the fittest city in the country for the third time in a row.

With the health care costs of physical inactivity exceeding $117 billion yearly, increasing physical activity has never been more important to the nations health and economic outcomes, the study states.

Boston residents were the most likely to bike or walk to work and was only one of two cities to have all residents living within a 10-minute walk to a park, the study states.

Massachusetts was also recently named the best state for health care in the United States, according to WalletHub.

When finding benefits of the diet, looking at different countries who adopt this way of eating as a norm often helps.

Residents of Okinawa are known for their extreme longevity and low-calorie, nutrient-rich diet.

Their way of eating has been suggested to help contribute to their long-life spans, low number of obesity and reduced risk of diseases.

Professor Mattson says studies have shown that this switch improves blood sugar regulation, increases resistance to stress and suppresses inflammation.

The professor notes that four studies in both animals and people found intermittent fasting also helped to decrease blood pressure, blood lipid levels and resting heart rates.

Preliminary studies suggest that intermittent fasting could benefit brain health too.

A clinical trial at the University of Toronto found that 220 healthy adults who maintained a calorie restricted diet for two years showed signs of improved memory in a battery of cognitive tests.

Professor Mattson added: Patients should be advised that feeling hungry and irritable is common initially and usually passes after two weeks to a month as the body and brain become accustomed to the new habit.

Mattson suggests a gradual acclimation to fasting rather than going cold turkey will help with this.

Mattsonalsohopes this study will give better insight to physicians, who can pass that guidance on to their patients.

For an added benefit, eating a Mediterranean diet during the eating phasecouldnot only boost longevity but improve heart health too.

The coronavirus pandemic hit the business pretty hard, but NeoGenomics (NASDAQ:NEO) had been preparing investors for months. Properly setting expectations turned out to be a great move.

Shares of NeoGenomics reached all-time highs shortly after the company announced second-quarter 2020 operating results. The financial metrics weren't pretty, and there's lingering uncertainty about the course of the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on the business, but investors are largely confident in the long-term strategy.

NeoGenomics is an oncology reference lab operating two business segments: clinical services and pharma services. The former collects patient samples from doctors, performs the test(s) selected by customers from a comprehensive menu, and returns the data. The latter helps biopharmaceutical companies to identify biomarkers for drug development, access oncology-specific datasets from pathologists, and develop and validate companion diagnostics.

When first-quarter 2020 operating results were announced, management prepared investors for a sour showing in the second quarter. The coronavirus pandemic was expected to impact clinical trials, which would hurt both business segments. However, NeoGenomics announced it wouldn't furlough employees and would continue investing in the business.

For the second quarter of 2020, total revenue slipped 14% compared to the year-ago period -- a sharp contrast to the double-digit growth investors have grown accustomed to in recent years. Gross profit sank due to lower revenue per test and higher costs, leaving investors with a relatively weak first-half showing for the business.

Pharma services revenue was the only bright spot, although the increase was entirely explained by the recent acquisition of assets from Human Longevity.

Despite the tough operating environment, management didn't flinch. On the second-quarter 2020 earnings conference call, CEO Douglas VanOort laid out a six-part business update comprising strategy and investments. Two developments in particular stood out.

NeoGenomics has converted a portion of its lab space to run up to 10,000 SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests per day, which could increase in the future. The business has also made a $25 million investment in a liquid biopsy start-up called Inivata. The equity investment gives the oncology reference lab the exclusive option to acquire Inivata.

More important, the investment provides NeoGenomics the option to commercialize the company's InvisionFirst-Lung liquid biopsy test. The diagnostic tests 37 relevant genes to drive care decisions for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is covered by Medicare and multiple private insurance payers, and is one of only two next-generation sequencing (NGS) tests with specific Medicare coverage.

NeoGenomics ended June with $331 million in cash, which is more than enough to weather a prolonged downturn. Management acknowledged the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, but has already begun to see signs of a rebound.

In April, test volumes were down 30% compared to the year-ago period. By June, test volumes were back in line with the prior-year period, although they were about 15% below pre-pandemic expectations for 2020. Volumes had not recovered to pre-pandemic expectations through July.

But management remains confident in the long-term plan. NeoGenomics is well-positioned for a strong recovery if and when the market permits. The business doesn't need an exceptional recovery -- a "V-shaped" recovery, if you will -- to climb back to profitability or growth. What's more, it could take advantage of the economic effects of the pandemic to acquire smaller peers that might be struggling.

That said, shares of NeoGenomics are certainly expensive. Is that the price to pay for profitable growth in an uncertain world? Perhaps, but investors might be better off waiting for a pullback, as the current valuation (as with many stocks right now) appears unsustainable in the near-term.

F.C. Yees The Shadow of Kyoshi is the second instalment of a prequel series about one of the most fabled Avatars of all time. Building off of 2019s The Rise of Kyoshi, the series follows Kyoshi, an Avatar known in the main series for her strength, longevity, and uncompromising judgment, during the nascent stages of her Avatarhood. In turn, it serves to humanize one of the Avatar franchises most legendary characters.

Kyoshis beginnings werent particularly auspicious. The Avatar is an individual tasked with mastering all four elements and their bending disciplines, learning how to mainpulate and fight using water, earth, fire, and air. In turn, theyre tasked with bringing balance to the world, mitigating both human and spiritual conflict in the four nations: The Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, the Water Tribes, and the Air Nomads. Each Avatar faces a unique set of challenges in carrying out this mission.

In The Rise of Kyoshi, everyone (including Kyoshi) believes that another Earth Kingdom boy, Yun, is the next Avatar. Living, working, and training at the estate of Jianzhu, a powerful Earth Kingdom politician, Kyoshi and Yun are friends. A violent encounter reveals their mistaken identities, cementing Kyoshi as the next Avatar and setting her on a path towards revenge.

The Shadow of Kyoshi is haunted by the specter of that encounter, while still maintaining the first novels wry sense of humour and adventure. After accepting a summons from the Fire Lord himself (with, of course, the promise of reuniting with her lover and Firebending master Rangi), Kyoshi finds herself trapped in a foreign political snare while simultaneously grappling with a new threat from the spirit world. Given that shes spent the better part of her Avatarhood hunting down corrupt bandits and detaching herself from the politics of her own nation, the situation leaves Kyoshi out of her depth.

The weighty, political conflict is just as thrilling as the action sequences peppered throughout the novel. Garden parties are just as fraught with tension as intense battles; strained clan relations have the potential to cause more trouble than physical threats. It also leaves ample room for granular worldbuilding, including new details about previous Avatars, like the oft-maligned Kuruk and the venerated Yangchen, as well as tidbits of information about geography, political history, and language that wasnt touched upon in the animated series.

Yees prose is also just as visceral as Avatars renowned animation sequences. Regarding The Rise of Kyoshi, the author told Polygon in 2019 that he looks for moments that were more easy to capture in a novel format, in particular where the action suddenly turns on a dime rather than attempting to capture every beat of a single action scene. Those intense, pivotal moments are what make The Shadow of Kyoshi a harrowing read, bringing an emotional resonance and vibrancy that cuts through the page.

A new cast of auxiliary companions and antagonists keep things lively, each imbued with their own complexities and mystery that prevent them from becoming just side characters to the larger conflict. Kyoshis Airbender companion, Jinpa, and his sky bison Yingyong, are particularly fun additions to the story, in addition to a cast of Fire Nation nobles that drive the political arc of the novel.

Rangi and Kyoshis relationship is the most compelling. With the realisation of feelings and getting together out of the way in the first novel, The Shadow of Kyoshi gives the two women plenty of space to be tender, bicker, fight, and reconcile over the course of the book. Thats part of what makes their relationship feel so different from other romantic entanglements in the Avatar universe: the franchise has never shied away from love stories, but both The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra end with romantic resolution rather than grapple with the relationships after the fact (although their central romances are continued in spin-off comics).

The fact that Kyoshi and Rangi have the most fully fleshed-out queer love story in the Avatar canon shouldnt go unmarked either. A Legend of Korra spin-off comic revealed in 2017 that Kyoshi was bisexual, and its a promise that Yee made good on in The Rise of Kyoshi, telling Polygon at the time that it felt important to not strip away Kyoshis queerness and do her relationships justice. In The Shadow of Kyoshi, Yee explores the complexities of Kyoshi and Rangis relationship and the ways that it affects their judgment, particularly in times of crisis with nuance and empathy. Their relationship is foundational to Kyoshis ascendance, and legacy, as the Avatar. In many ways, Rangi serves as her emotional and moral centre.

UB study finds testosterone therapy can lead to remission in men with Type 2 diabetes – UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff – University…

The findings from a recent study by a UB researcher and others could prove to be a game-changer for men with Type 2 diabetes.

The single-site study, conducted over 11 years in Bremerhaven, Germany, found that testosterone therapy reversed Type 2 diabetes in one-third of the study participants.

The occurrence of this syndrome is common, and with appropriate testosterone replacement, obesity insulin resistance and diabetes may be reversible, says Paresh Dandona, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB. He co-authored the study, titled Remission of type 2 diabetes following long-term treatment with injectable testosterone undecanoate in patients with hypogonadism and type 2 diabetes: 11-year data from a real-world registry study.

The prospective, registry-based study was published in June in the online journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. Dandona also presented the data at the Annual Mohan Diabetes Foundation Symposium in Chennai, India, on July 25, where he was given the organizations Lifetime Achievement Award.

Type 2 diabetes, also known as Type 2 diabetes mellitus, results from a combination of insulin resistance and insufficient production of insulin, causing high blood sugar. The condition is common, with more than 3 million new cases per year in the United States. Reduced testosterone concentrations are found in 33% of men with Type 2 diabetes.

The discovery of this syndrome of hypogonadism in Type 2 diabetes was made by Dandonas group at UB in 2004. This group then extended the prevalence of this syndrome to include 25% of non-diabetic obese men in 2010. Thus, diabetes and obesity became the main cause of male hypogonadism. The group went on to demonstrate that such patients have additional insulin resistance that reverses with testosterone treatment in 2016.

Testosterone deficiency, which is also called male hypogonadism, contributes to reduced response of insulin to glucose, increased insulin resistance and eventually the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

The objective of the researchers study was to determine if men with Type 2 diabetes who also exhibit hypogonadism, when treated with testosterone in addition to their regular diabetes treatment, would demonstrate improved glycemic control and insulin sensitivity, and possibly eventually experience remission of Type 2 diabetes.

The investigators observed 356 men in a single urology practice clinic over 11 years. All patients received standard diabetes treatment, which included mandatory educational courses and materials. In addition, 178 men with a mean age of 62 years received 1,000 milligrams of subcutaneously injected, slow-release testosterone every 12 weeks after an initial six-week interval. The 178 subjects, mean age 64 years, who opted out of the testosterone therapy served as the control group.

The researchers took numerous measurements, including height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, hemoglobin, fasting glucose, HbA1c (the average amount of glucose in blood over a six- or 12-week period), insulin, heart rate, lipids, highly sensitive C-reactive protein and total testosterone, among others. They also assessed quality of life using the Aging Males Symptoms scale. Erectile function was also assessed, using the International Index of Erectile Function. Assessment of these clinical metrics was performed at least twice a year, and data over 11 years were analyzed.

The results showed that the men treated with testosterone had significant progressive and sustained reductions in their body weight, fasting glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin over the treatment period, the authors wrote. In the control group, fasting glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin increased.

One-third (34.3%) of men treated with testosterone saw remission of their diabetes; almost half (46.6%) achieved normal glucose regulation with antidiabetic treatment and a vast majority (83.1%) reached their target level of HbA1c.

Patients in the control group saw no remission of diabetes or reduction in glucose or HbA1c levels.

In addition, there were fewer deaths, myocardial infarctions, strokes and diabetic complications in the group treated with testosterone.

The research indicates that long-term treatment with testosterone is potentially a novel additional therapy for men with Type 2 diabetes and hypogonadism, the authors wrote.

The clinical significance of these results is further enhanced by the fact that one-third of men with Type 2 diabetes have hypogonadism. Hence, physicians encounter men with hypogonadism and diabetes very frequently. It is remarkable that while Type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to hypogonadism, treatment of hypogonadism results in remission of diabetes itself, the authors wrote.

Going forward, prospective randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the data. One such trial is currently in progress.

Dandona is one of the worlds leading experts in the treatment of diabetes and vascular disease. He is also the ex-chief of endocrinology at UB and founder of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center of Western New York, which is sponsored by the Jacobs School and Kaleida Heath. Karen greeted me at Market last Friday with Guess what? We have TWO tamale vendors! When Juanita isnt able to be here, Juan Morales will occupy her spot, selling his moms tamales Rosas Tamales.

Splendid! I replied. I know we have vendors as well as customers who need their weekly homemade tamale fix.

As the morning progressed, I kept an eye on Juans booth. Busy busy! When there was a lull, I popped around, pen in hand, and asked him for a smidgen of his time. Yes, of course! he replied with a smile as warm and inviting as his tamales. What would you like to know?

Well, Im always curious as to what brings people to Teton Valley..., I began.

My family and I were living in California in the 1990s. It became too crowded, so we moved to Jackson in 1998. We enjoyed it there, but it was getting expensive. So, in 2001, we moved to Victor. After graduating from Teton High School, I left to go to college. But, I came back to the Valley, and about five years ago, started making tamales. Tamales are a traditional Mexican holiday food, and I wanted to provide a healthy lifestyle option for the traditionally heavy Latino food. So I give them a healthy boost using ingredients from all three food groups (protein, carbs, fat). Id known about the many farmers and producers here in the Valley, so I knew Id be able to use locally-sourced ingredients. My goal is to create foods that are healthy, affordable, and delicious, using as many local ingredients as possible. I guess you might say I provide traditional Latino eating adventures using locally-sourced, healthy ingredients for people on the go!

Another goal I have is to use ingredients that become available according to growing charts, not by mono-cropping. Our small farms here make that happen, and they are all making big changes in doing so. Look at the diversity of their crops, and the ways they treat their land, their animals, and their water. We need to keep that going by reinforcing local consumption. In doing so, we are supporting our local economy and improving our land. Its a win-win situation!

Juan pauses. Im scribbling away like mad, hoping to catch everything hes saying. He smiles broadly at me and continues, In addition, I make shaved ice with fruits to bring to Sunday soccer in Jackson. I use mangos, pineapples, bananas, and as much local fruit (Idaho apples and pears, and Colorado peaches) as possible. The left-over fruits I make into my Naughty Fruit. They have an extra twang I add to the process.

My first commercial space in the Valley was next to Suba in Victor. They were very nice and supportive. I sold burritos there as well as green smoothies I made with celery, kale, and yogurt. I also did catering, and sold at the Farmers and Peoples Markets in Jackson.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your business? I asked.

Big time, Juan laughs in spite of himself. March is when I usually start selling in Jackson at the Peoples Market. Not this year! Even my on-line business went out the window! A big financial blow, but Im not down. Times like these can make you stronger, forcing you to become creative. Rethink new strategies.

In March, my family and I opened a new shop in the Industrial Center here in Driggs next to Rob Dupres Chasing Paradise. Since then, my Naughty Fruit sales have increased. In August, Im planning a Kick Starter campaign to grow that business even more.

Where are your mom and dad? I asked.

Back at the shop in Driggs making more tamales for tomorrows Market in Jackson. Theyre in their sixties, but they love to participate. I enjoy being out selling, getting to know my neighbors. Interesting how tough times give us all opportunities to connect.

Everyone likes to sleep in every now and then and we are not suggesting you should wake up super early every day for no reason. Waking up and going to bed roughly at the same time can help your body build a routine which in turn will have a positive effect on your metabolism too.
