Q13's Ali Bradley reports.

SEATTLE - As school gets back in session, learning, of course, looks very different for most kids across the state and the country. With a lot of uncertainty still lingering, experts are anticipating a spike in anxiety and depression in school-aged kids. So, we talked to a psychiatrist about how to tell if your kid is suffering from more than just the back-to-school jitters.

Dr. Larry Mitnaul says there are some things to look out for,If you see your child kind of acting unusual every time that you are getting ready for school or having school-like conversations, they suddenly become quiet, or they certainly start expressing that you know they are having these recurrent headaches or theyre tummy troubles all of the time ... Imean these might be early kind of detective signs that ok my child is really having a tough time with this and maybe we need to either delve a little bit deeper and try to talk about it.'

Dr. Mintaul is also a volunteer medical expert for the American Heart Association and he is offering some tips on what parents can do to help in this unprecedented time.

First, he says get back into a routine.

It is one of those foundational pillars that help kids to expect whats happening next in their day and in a land and in a time when everything is gonna be, you know, changing and switching up with probably some irregularity.

Here are the routines Dr. Mitnaul says we should focus on. Getback into the routine of good nutrition, it is easy to get off track during the summer months with a more relaxed schedule.

Next, if you arent already, start getting the kids back into a routine of being physically active. Go on walks around the neighborhood if you don't have a backyard or space to play. Dr. Mitnaul says to try to make a game out of it so the kids are more inclined to participate.

Finally, try to get into the routine of decluttering tech and screen time.

Dr. Mitnaul says while it may be tough with remote-learning, these things can help kids get back into building these habits when the year is underway.

Another thing he says we need to focus on is patience and a little grace, Preparing our kids too to give each other a little bit of grace in this transition and for us as parents too to give each other and the school administrators and our local and state officials you know the benefit of the doubt that they are trying as best as they can even when there are some very real frustrations.

Dr. Mitnaul says using something familiar to them can help adjust the way they feel about a situation. For example, kids read a lot of adventure books or watch movies like Frozen and they can be heard singing into the unknown but is it the unknown that has many kids freaking out over right now.

Now is a really great time to one, revisit some of those stories, and then maybe frame for our kids, or talk about it in that lens. You know, ok there are a lot of things that we are not gonna know, you know or be able to expect. So what do we do when the unexpected happens? You know how do we calm our bodies and brains when we are not sure what to do or are feeling overwhelmed.

Dr. Mitnaulsays talking to your children on a different level might help strike up the conversation as it can be tough for many kids and teens to express their emotions during this difficult time,Maybe even talking about not to the depth or a level that you would with your partner or spouse, you know, there are some things about this that dads a little bit nervous about you know. Sometimes our kids look at us like 'you get nervous?' or 'you know or things worry you a little bit? yes. and here is what i do you know when i feel that worry.

So for the parents feeling like their kid is already having a rough time or maybe you are having a hard time coping, Dr. Mitnaul says now is a good time to connect with someone you trust, like a pediatritian, family doctor or even lean on your community members,Maybe that next step is just reassurance that youre not going crazy and that youre doing ok.

5 Easy Ways to Detox in the Morning to Be Healthier All Day Long – The Beet

Everyone wants to wake up healthier and lose weight fast. Luckily there are things you can do every morning to push your body closer to the healthiest it can be. And while there is no quick fix (to lose weight, have boundless energy, and look and feel years younger bydinner) there are small steps you can take to become healthier, more energetic, and detox your body over time. Detoxing is a way of allowing your cells to do the important work of staying healthy, by eating better, getting sleep, exercising, and taking care of yourself, every day.

Going into a long weekend of fun and relaxation shouldn't mean falling off a cliff, healthwise, since consistency is the key to being healthy. If you make a habit of starting the day right, everything flows so much more easily from there. Committing to yourself and taking theselittle steps to being healthier is the way to see long-term health and wellbeing changes, says Nicole Rose, RD and master in nutrition, who practices in Ridgefield CT, and who loves to help her clients take the necessary steps to detox and get healthier, day by day.

"Overhauling your health or diet all at once can be overwhelming," she says. "Instead take small steps, do something to detox every day, even days a week, and that will lead you to wellness." Here are her five tips for making your body healthier, and they all add up to allowing the body to work less hard to process junk food, and spend more time getting healthier, one day at a time.

Rose is a big believer in eating more plant-based foods, adding healthy fruits and vegetables to your plate, but not being too harsh on yourself or setting unrealistic boundaries and telling yourself you can't have certain foods you may love. "If you put someone in a box and they want to get out of that box, and when they eat that off-limits food--whether it's meat or junk food--it's like they fail," she explains, which is why I don't like labels (such as vegan). But if you help them do a little better every day, they feel like they are winning, conquering their bad habits by adding good ones, and eventually, they feel so great they want to keep going."

Wellness doesn't have to cost a lot of money, or be complicated. It can start with jumping jacks in the morning, or dry brushing, or keeping a healthy salad dressing made in a mason jar in the fridge. But the more little things you do to be healthy, the more they add up, says Rose, and these wins beget bigger wins, and suddenly you are living a healthy lifestyle.

Her detoxing morning rituals and healthy habits for Rose includes any combination of these five ideas.Rose also believes that detoxing is a way of getting rid of what's unhealthy, which is an easier and simpler path towellness since it allows the body to work less hard to eliminatetoxins in our food, which allows you to stay healthy. Then she advises her clients to add clean foods, especially plant-based choices which are rich in antioxidants. Rose advisesclients toavoid acid foods (from animal products) and add alkaline foods (which grow in the earth) to allow your body to get healthier, naturally.

"Doing all these little things(like dry brushing or waiting to eat until you're hungry in the morning)is a bonus, and will help you feel like you're winning, so you want to keep on taking care of yourself, by eating healthy for the rest of the day," she adds. And while there is no one-size-fits-all for diets, she loves working with her clients to help tailor their programs to fit their needs and their lifestyles and add more plant-based foods to their plate.

Lemon Water first thing is the number one thing I advise. It helps your body by adding antioxidants first thing. You can add apple cider vinegar or ginger if you like, which is antibacterial and antifungal. I call it your morning flu shot. Start with water and lemon in the morning to alkalize your body and let it start to get the toxins out. Drinking hot Lemon Water in the morning has been linked to weight loss and improved immunity, so especially now, while coronavirus is still a threat, drinking this first thing will supply nearly 30 percent of your vitamin C for the day, boosting immunity and giving your body a healthy start to the day.

This is such a simple thing. Go outsidefor 15minutes in the morning to start your day and get sunlight. You can walk, bike, jog or just do sun salutes, or stretch by reaching for the sky, but the important thing is to let the sunlight hit your eyes and send a signal to the brain that you're awake, set restart on the day, "this is a bright new start," which works to reset your circadian rhythms and signal your body to wake up!

A new study shows that bright sunlight within an hour of waking up will help you fall asleep earlier in the evening (as will avoiding bright light within 2 hours of bedtime) so if you're sleep deprived or anxious and having trouble getting to sleep, head outside within an hour of waking to reset your body's natural clock. There's the added benefit of getting vitamin D which your body needs to metabolize nutrients like calcium from the food you eat, and boost your immune system. For energy and immunity, better sleep and a healthy metabolism, get a dose of early sunlight!

Sweat is important and we would be remiss if we didn't tell you to start your day with an activity that makes you sweat, even if it's jumping jacks. But there is another way to rid your body of toxins in sweat and that's by opening your pores and stimulating the skin with dry brushing. "People love dry brushing. You feel good, and it's believed to help your lymphatic system," Rose says. The idea is that by brushing your skin you slough off any dead cells and allow your pores to breathe,Dry brushing devotees do it torelease toxins through the skin. The bristlesstimulateand open pores andmay make it easier for the body to sweat out toxins, which lowers the number of toxins flowing through thelymphatic system. Rose tells clients to start doing it every day before their shower. "This is a way to feel like you're doing something healthy. You don't have to conquer something big."

She adds that if you like the brushing, you're going to start feeling good about your life and loving your routine. "You have to enjoy your morning and getting into it is part of a healthy lifestyle."

Changing up your breakfast is a big help in losing weight and feeling better. Everyone is trying intermittent fasting to lose weight, but Rose thinks there's a simpler and less harsh approach. Don't eat until you're hungry and even then keep it simple.

"Maybe start by pulling back on what you are eating. If you wake up and you're not that hungry, just wait to eat. My advice, and there's no delicate way to put this: Start by not eating until you have a bowel movement because we don't want to put today's food on yesterday's garbage."

Then, Rose advises, eat a small piece of fruit in the morning, instead of a big omelet or smoothie with 19 different ingredients. A simple piece of fruit like a peach, an apple, or a handful of berries is a perfect start to a clean day. "This gets your digestion going but is less work on your body to digest, so you can continue detoxing from the night before. The whole idea of detoxing is to give your body less work, so your liver and kidneys and intestines can do their job to cleanse your system. You want to start the day by cleaning out."

Start by giving your body less work to do, during the beginning of the day. "The less digestive work your body is going through, the healthier you are going to be," she adds

When you eat foods, the metabolic waste is either acid or alkaline, and the more fruit and vegetables and plant-based foods you eat, the more alkaline your body becomes, which is considered healthier in avoiding diseases like cancer. The flip side is that meat and dairy leave an acid metabolic waste and can increase your risks of chronic diseases. There are myriad studies now that link red meat and processed meat to cancer risk, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, and mounting scientific evidence that diets rich in plant-based foods and high in fiber lower your risk for all these diseases and conditions.

According to the Alkaline Diet, choosing more alkaline foods will improve your daily health and help you avoid long-term diseases, including cancer. Says Rose: "I am not a fan of meat and dairy. It creates acid in your body, and your body has to go thru so much work to neutralize the acid. Eating animal foods like meat and dairy leads to inflammation. I try to keep it simple. I tell clients to eat more fruits and vegetables. It's the small things that make a difference. Cutting out meat and dairy is the diff between your body being acid and alkaline and if they understand that they can choose healthier foods.

"I don't say. eat vegan but I try tolead by example and show clients how to shop, cook and eat more plant-based foods, which inevitably makes them feel great, as they try it.

"If you tell them what they can do, like eat more plant-based foods, as opposed to what they can't do, like cut out a specific food they may like, then they feel like they have won the lottery. You let them do all these healthy things and choose healthy foods. That's a win."

Ultimately the detox you do will make you feel positive, and give you the sense of taking control of your health from the very start of the day onwards. You want to feel empowered to become the master of your own life, she adds. "Ultimately you are giving people the power to be healthier."

"The love you have for your self, the happy talk, all adds up to make a healthier lifestyle. Small changes like these allow you to live a better life."

Wellness doesn't take crazy amounts of money or time. It's these morning detox moves. And then carry that forward throughout the day. It's making yourself a simple dressing, she adds, that you can keep in a mason jar and put on your greens at lunch to make them tasty. It's all these little strategies that add up.

Take these little steps and others that will set yourself up for success, Rose explains. "I care about consistency, that's where you're going to see progress. One morning at a time. Build a relationship with your wellbeing."

Nicole Rose, MFRD has a Masters in Nutrition and is a Registered Dietician. "I eat sleep and breathe this lifestyle," she says, practicing in Ridgefield CT. "On a personal note, I have never felt better than now at 47. For the past 25 years, I tried everything. I loved Diet Coke and Tic Tacs and gum. But I don't do those things anymore. I got informed. And I don't want those things anymore. It's nothing to do with willpower. It's knowing what you feel like when you are doing something great. It's building yourselfup."

How Coast brothers-in-law are changing health education – Sunshine Coast Daily

Coast brother-in-laws, passionate about helping kids live healthy lives will next week educate nearly 2000 students on healthy eating and active living through fun and interactive programs.

Cam Best and Chris Windsor started Juiced Up Groms, which offers weekly park sessions and educational shows in December 2019 and have since gone from strength to strength despite COVID-19 limiting their ability to present in schools.

Generation next: 25 Coast schoolboy rugby stars of today

More than a gym owner: Tributes flow for fitness mentor

Mr Best, who is a father-of-three and studies nutrition, said the Juiced Up Living show used a variety of storytelling games, characters and smoothie making to help children understand the basic concepts of eating healthy and enjoying life.

He said they received an influx of bookings for the Juiced Up Living Show and had to extend their roadshow to seven days so they could visit 12 schools in Toowoomba and perform for more than 1700 students.

We are super excited about that and for us its all about getting out there and showing these kids a message about healthy living, he said.

To impact them at such a young age to us means the world because we know that if we can give them some really simple information about living a healthy life at a young age its going to make such a difference to them later on.

We see it as such an honour and responsibility to be able to teach these kids about healthy living that is going to dramatically improve their lifestyle and how they feel.

Chris Windsor and Cam started Juiced Up Groms in December 2019. Photo Patrick Woods.

The upcoming roadshow marks a new beginning for Juiced Up Groms after COVID-19 drastically reduced their ability to run educational activities.

Our Juiced Up Living Show was really starting to make some inroads just before COVID-19 and then we pretty much had to drop the anchor and hit the brakes for probably four months, Mr Windsor said.

A lot of the schools had to cancel shows because there were no visitors allowed in schools but Cam and myself took it upon ourselves to do online workouts which we were doing every day for 13 weeks.

So, we sort of lost our momentum and had to start from scratch and this will put us back on track for a good end of year.

Mr Windsor said they were motivated to help children live healthy lives.

We are extremely passionate about helping kids and getting them to understand the importance of fuelling their bodies the right way, so they are fit and healthy and have strong immune systems especially in a time like this,

If you haven’t melted yet, here’s how to beat the heat in Houston. – Houston Chronicle

The last week in Houston has been the physical embodiment of the "It's not just the heat, it's the humidity" meme.

According to Space City Weather, the daily high temperature was 98 degrees or higher on 15 days in August.

Though stores, malls and restaurants have reopened, it's still important to stay distanced from people who don't live in your household. You can safely go to the mall, but it's not the air-conditioned safe haven that we have come to rely on in summers past.

Follow these tips to survive the heat until the first cool front of the season (whenever that will be):

HYDRATION

Drinking water is an important part of surviving a Houston summer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, water helps your body keep a normal temperature, get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements, lubricate and cushion your joints and protect sensitive tissues.

On RenewHouston.com: Here's your sunscreen guide for Summer 2020

Daily water intake recommendations vary by age, sex and whether youre pregnant or breastfeeding.

The CDC recommends men consume 3.7 liters, or 125 ounces, each day through a combination of food and liquids, while women should consume 2.7 liters, or 91 ounces. But even that should be increased for those planning to exercise.

Drink water throughout your fitness routine if you can, and add in electrolytes via sports drinks like Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialyte, which was initially created for sick children but is now marketed to active adults.

SUN SAFETY

Plan your outdoor activities during the morning or evening hours, and check the weather forecast for heat advisories or excessive heat warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

If you're outside when the sun is up, wear sunscreen with SPF protection of 30 or higher. And remember to take breaks in your workout.

On RenewHouston.com: Here's your sunscreen guide for Summer 2020

Never assume that youre invincible, said Space City Weather meteorologist Matt Lanza. While we can adapt and adjust to the hot climate during Houston summers, its important to realize that its still really hot which can have negative consequences on the human body.

Choose a mineral-based sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium oxide. These are the only ingredients that are proven safe for human use, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Two scientific studies published last year showed that after a single application, all non-mineral sunscreen ingredients are absorbed through the skin and could be detected in our bodies at levels that could cause harm, the EWG found.

SWEAT

Sweating, while it can be annoying, is definitely good for us on 100-plus degree days.

The main reason that humans sweat is we need to regulate our body temperature; its actually a really beautiful system, said Dr. Rajani Katta, clinical assistant professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and a board certified dermatologist. When we overheat, our sweat glands produce more sweat. When it evaporates, it cools off our temperature.

On HoustonChronicle.com: Summer of sweat: Could 2020 be Houstons sweatiest year?

Humidity does not make us sweat more, she said, but it does raise our body temperatures, which causes us to sweat more. Some bodies acclimate better to the heat and dont sweat as much as others.

Older people sweat less than younger people, which puts them at an increased risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, Katta said.

When exercising outside, watch out for signs of heat-related illness: headache, skin that is cool to the touch and a lack of sweat. If you experience these, stop what youre doing, find shade and drink water.

Its really not just about sweat, but hydration and how you motivate yourself to stay hydrated, said Shelby Saylor, association director of healthy living at the YMCA of Greater Houston. Sweat all you want, just replenish it.

Superior Health Foundation gala goes virtual this year – Marquette Mining Journal

Jim LaJoie, executive director, Superior Health Foundation

MARQUETTE The Superior Health Foundation, along with its 2020 partners Great Lakes Recovery Centers and the Healthy Youth Coalition of Marinette & Menominee Counties, are gearing up for the ninth annual Superior Health Foundation Gala.

The event, scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 will be a live virtual event from the Northern Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

The gala will feature more than 15 incredible silent auction prizes, mystery prize boxes, entertainment by the U.P.s very own Joshua Davis, messages from the two gala partners and opportunities for the viewing audience to win prizes.

With COVID-19 and the worldwide pandemic, it became abundantly clear in early July that we would be unable to host a live event, said Jim LaJoie, executive director of the Superior Health Foundation in a press release. We will miss the hundreds of in-person attendees and the joy of hosting the event.

Having said that, we are incredibly excited about the virtual event. We are working very closely with LaDolce Video and Audio Visual Services at Northern Michigan University to throw an exciting event that evening. Although the pandemic has certainly altered our plans, the many health needs in the Upper Peninsula have not changed. Thus, were thrilled to put on a virtual event.

The virtual event will be available on SHFs website at superiorhealthfoundation.org. There, viewers will have an opportunity to purchase mystery gift boxes, bid on silent auction items and view the entire event.

The online silent auction and gift boxes will be available to bid on and purchase beginning at noon Saturday, Sept. 5. The silent auction and purchasing of gift boxes will end at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. Silent auction winners will be notified immediately following the auction, while gift box winners will be notified by email on either Monday, Sept. 14 or Tuesday, Sept. 15. SHF will mail the prizes to those living outside of Marquette County.

The partners will each receive $10,000 for their projects that evening.

SHF sent out gala invitations the last week of August.

Were asking friends and donors to support our efforts with a charitable gift, LaJoie said. Funds raised will address mental health needs in the Upper Peninsula. Weve partnered with Michigan Made in Marquette to offer some nice prizes to those who give a gift. Give $50 and youll receive a beautiful Michigan Made wine glass with the SHF logo on the back. Give a gift of $75 and receive a $15 gift certificate to the store. Give a gift of $100, and youll receive both the wine glass and gift certificate.

The pandemic, ensuing lockdown and other unfortunate events during this crisis have contributed to increased mental health issues in the region. Were committed to doing our part in helping address these issues.

To bid on silent auction items, purchase gift boxes for $50 or give a charitable gift, visit superiorhealthfoundation.org.

Those with questions are encouraged to either call the Superior Health Foundation at 906-225-6914 or email shf@superiorhealthfoundation.org.

Healthy Living: Researchers Study Link Between Blood Type, COVID-19 – 9&10 News

Research on the novel coronavirus has already determined that men, people of color, and those with underlying medical conditions are at greater risk of having severe COVID-19 cases.

But can your blood type also be a factor? Some scientists are looking into it.

In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists performed a genetic analysis on people who currently had COVID-19 and those who did not. They found that people with type A blood had a 50% greater risk of needing oxygen support or a ventilator if they were to contract COVID-19. While people with type O blood had a 50% reduced risk of having severe COVID-19.

Some explanation as to why type O blood has a reduced risk of severe COVID-19 might be people with type O are better able to recognize certain proteins as foreign, and then fight them off better, including proteins on virus surfaces.

Get Fit with Prepped Wellness – TheJambar.com

By Kelcey Norris

Youngstown State University alumnus Gino West created Prepped Wellness, a personalized meal preparation company delivered right to his customers doors in 2019. The company offers personalized meal preparation that is healthy with a variety of allergen-friendly options.

West has eliminated the hassles of eating healthy by designing the recipes, picking up ingredients, preparing and delivering meals.

We do all the shopping and cooking; you just have to eat, West said. I use all high quality goods, fresh, nothing frozen. Everything is dairy-free, gluten-free and fresh.

Customers virtually submit their menu orders on Wednesday nights. West gathers ingredients during the week and prepares their meals on Sunday, which are delivered or picked up later in the day.

YSU students who write in the comment section stating they attend the university will receive a discount.

During his first year at YSU, West decided to make some changes concerning his weight.

At this point, I was 350 pounds, he said. One day, I had an internal snap. In 2009, my sister was approved for bariatric surgery. Then I got on the scale and knew that something had to change, like now.

West said this moment was the beginning of his health and wellness journey.

I ate really clean, like chicken, salads and fruit, Monday through Friday, then gave myself the weekends to eat what I want, West said. I lost 140 pounds in a year and a half. I wasnt even exercising, this was just strictly me moderating my food intake.

His weight loss journey inspired him to study health and nutrition at the university. He wanted to help others develop healthy eating habits, too.

Helping people and caring for people has always been my passion. So I thought, What can I do to take the thought process out of maintaining and living this healthy lifestyle? West said. Well, why dont I just do it for them?

After graduating from YSU in 2015 with a dietetic degree, he began the first stage of Prepped Wellness.

With his culinary experience, West became a personal chef, preparing healthy meals for 15 customers per week at their homes.

I did all the grocery shopping, the whole nine yards for them. Im essentially a personal healthy lifestyle chef, he said. I came to your house and prepared everything for you for the week. That went on for about a year and a half.

Business was booming, and West said it was more than he could handle alone. He expanded his healthy meal preparation operation in early 2019 into a small business.

Now, Im covering five counties, three delivery drivers and a team of eight people working under me, West said. What I created was a very easy concept for people to be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle without having to do much. The menu is always changing; its fun and people have just been raving about how great the food tastes.

Meal prep packages start at $40 for five different entres. West said the most popular package among his customers is the 5-5-5-5 pack for $60, which includes breakfast, salads, fruits and entres.

Im super competitive with my prices, with both my direct competitors in Youngstown and also the big-box people, West said.

Although his food is gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetable-heavy its still flavorful, according to West.

People think itll be just steamed chicken and boiled broccoli. No, food is flavor. I want it to be a good experience for you but also be awesome for your body, he said. Youre eating clean, sustainable energy while also getting a high-flavor rate, so its really the best of both worlds with this meal prep.

What Is the Primal Diet? Food List and Day of Eating – Greatist

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Heres our process.

Created for Greatist by the experts at Healthline. Read more

If youve tried and failed to follow the Paleo diet because a) you dont do CrossFit and b) so many rules , you might be intrigued by its hunter-gatherer cousin, the primal diet.

The primal diet is based on the Primal Blueprint, an eating plan developed by Mark Sisson in 2009. Sisson, a former elite athlete, was searching for a way to stay healthy once his competitive days were over (but without having to endure a ridic training schedule).

He was also focused on healing the chronic inflammation he experienced after years of rigorous training. Through his research, Sisson determined that eating more like our ancient ancestors did might be the key to living a healthy and fit lifestyle.

That meant avoiding sugar and other processed foods while focusing on the high quality stuff, like protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Our ancient ancestors probably survived by eating foods they could hunt and gather a seasonal menu, if you will. And research has found that this style of diet may help lower the risk of many diseases often associated with poor diet quality.

The main focus of the primal diet is high quality whole foods that are minimally processed (if at all) and organic (when possible). The primal diet encourages eating only the foods our primal ancestors may have had access to, including:

Processed foods are out (sorry, no burgers and fries in the wild), along with grains (like wheat and corn) and low fat dairy products.

The primal diet is not that different from Paleo, but it is for sure less rigid (were listening).

Both the Paleo and the primal diet are built on the idea that our modern-day food habits, particularly in Western cultures, are anything but good for us.

They both insist we wouldnt have so many chronic health conditions running rampant if we simply avoided processed foods (yes, even the healthy processed foods). And both claim that if we ate more like our hunter-gatherer ancestors did, wed be way healthier.

While primal has some flexibility, Paleo is definitely more strict in its rules. Here are the biggest differences between the two plans:

In general, going primal means eating low carb (or at least lower carb). On this diet you completely eliminate foods like bread, pasta, cereals, baked goods, snack foods, and other packaged foods.

The primal diet focuses on minimally processed, whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, protein, raw and fermented dairy, and healthy fats.

Dont worry there is room for some indulgence (although a reservation at Carbone may not be an option). Alcohol is allowed, as is dark chocolate (70 percent cacao or higher).

Heres whats on the EAT list when going primal:

The original primal diet eliminated all processed foods, grains, and legumes. But the opinion on beans and legumes has since changed, and theyre now recommended in moderation.

Anything that comes in a can or box or has a shelf life longer than we do is out too.

Heres whats on the DO NOT EAT list:

So, what can you expect from this diet? Here are the deets on the good and the bad of going primal.

With a focus on whole foods, the primal diet feeds you high quality, minimally processed foods with plenty of antioxidants. In fact, eating like our ancestors may provide serious health benefits.

A small 2009 study found that this way of eating may help improve blood pressure and decrease LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) and triglycerides but this study included only nine people. A 2014 study of 70 postmenopausal women with obesity also found that a Paleo-style diet improved cholesterol levels.

And according to a 2015 study, this type of diet may also help regulate blood sugar levels in people who have type 2 diabetes.

Theres no calorie counting, weighing, or measuring here, which means no stressing out over grams of anything.

This diet is all about flexibility (and its guidelines sometimes change). The goal here is to live that 80/20 lifestyle. If you (and your diet) are on point 80 percent of the time, the other 20 percent is reserved for a few conscious deviations from the plan.

The primal eating plan can be pricey and inconvenient, and the necessary foods may not be easily accessible to everyone. Foods like grains, beans, and legumes are often inexpensive diet staples for folks with a smaller food budget.

While some people might think saturated fat is A-OK, full fat dairy is controversial and may not be a great option for everyone to eat on the regular. Too much saturated fat can be bad news for your cholesterol and could be harmful to those with heart disease.

How much saturated fat is too much?

The American Heart Association still recommends consuming less than 10 percent of your total daily calories from saturated fat. Thats 20 grams or less of saturated fat on average. If youre a primal diet fan, its a good idea to consume saturated fats in moderation.

While the diet has changed its tune on legumes since the original plan came out in 2009, those who follow the initial recommendations may unnecessarily eliminate good-for-you nutrients like B vitamins and fiber.

Raw dairy is the biggest caution sign here. Raw milk may carry harmful bacteria that would have otherwise been killed off in the pasteurizing process.

Those looking to lose weight and keep it off will fare well on the primal plan.

The higher protein and fiber intake from high quality animal protein, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds means primal diet followers tend to feel satisfied on less food. The natural tendency toward consuming less means fewer calories and more potential weight loss.

Those with type 2 diabetes may also find this way of eating beneficial. Again, the focus on high quality protein and increased fiber naturally lends itself to consuming fewer calories (and thus weight loss) and to eating fewer starchy carbohydrates. Both of those changes can help lower blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.

Really, though, anyone who wants to eat more whole foods can benefit from this plan. If you currently eat a lot of processed and packaged foods, this is a great way to introduce more high quality foods.

A day of primal eating

So, what might a day of eating be like on the primal diet? With a focus on fruit, vegetables, high quality protein, and healthy fats, lets take a look at what a typical menu could look like:

Breakfast: Two-egg omelet cooked in 1 tablespoon of cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil and filled with spinach, mushrooms, and onions. Top it off with 1 to 2 tablespoons of shaved Parmesan. Need more fuel? Add a side salad of tomato and cucumbers.

Lunch: Spaghetti squash Bolognese over wilted Swiss chard

Optional snack: Full fat yogurt mixed with berries and a little almond butter

Dinner: Roasted salmon topped with pesto and a side of roasted broccoli and roasted sweet potato fries

Optional dessert: If dessert is your thing, you can grab a cup of berries or a square or two of 75 percent cacao dark chocolate or sip on a glass of red wine.

The primal diet, similar to its predecessor Paleo, promotes eating more like our hunter-gatherer ancestors did.

Eating this way helps you cut out processed foods and eat more whole, unprocessed foods like fruit, vegetables, lean protein, nuts, seeds, and other healthy fats.

Unlike Paleo, the primal diet is fluid and intends to be a guide for healthy living instead of a rigid rule book.

Some possible downsides of the plan are its reliance on saturated fats (like full fat dairy) and the lack of some foods that have beneficial nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

The diet emphasizes good-for-you fats. But if you have high cholesterol or any type of cardiovascular disease, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider before trying the primal diet since it includes some high fat foods.

Its a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before starting any new diet to make sure its the best plan for you. A registered dietitian can help tailor the diet to your specific needs and health conditions.

Statement from the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada on September 3, 2020 – Benzinga

OTTAWA, ON, Sept. 3, 2020 /CNW/ -In lieu of an in-person update to the media, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, issued the following statement today:

"There have been 129,923 cases of COVID-19 in Canada, including 9,135 deaths. 88.5% of people have now recovered. Labs across Canada tested an average of 46,000 people daily over the past week with 0.9% testing positive. An average of 501 new cases have been reported daily during the most recent seven days.

Our homes, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and communities have a significant impact on our health. The environments where we live, work, study and play can impact our mental health; our access to exercise, nutrition, and healthcare; and sometimes our exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.

In order to get and stay healthy, we must ensure that the physical and social environments in which we live are healthy places. To help support these efforts, the Government of Canada recently announced theCanada Healthy Communities Initiativeto help governments andcommunity partners advance the goal of healthier living environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative will providefunding to small-scale, local projects that help adapt public spaces and places to the healthy living needs of their communities during these unprecedented times.

As I noted in my firstannual reportasCanada's Chief Public Health Officer, changes to our built environment can help us prevent chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease and also improve our mental wellbeing. This isn't a new concept in public health. Over the last century, improving sanitation, infrastructure planning, and addressing residential overcrowding reduced infectious disease rates in Canada.

Even now, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we see examples of municipal leadership adaptingcity infrastructure in ways that encourage outdoor social and physical activities. Many communities closed selected streets to traffic, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to exercise outdoors safely. Restaurants, bars, and cafes with outdoor seating were permitted patio expansions to ensure patrons were able to safely dine at least two meters apart. These changes to our built environment help us to be socially together and remain physically apart.

While specific projects will vary based on community needs and proposals, they will share a common objective: to ensure physical and social environments enable us to easily, and accessibly, follow public health measures during the pandemic, while providing opportunities to be more physically active and attain improved mental health, both now and into the future.

Remember that whenever we are in public spaces, we should always interact with one another in ways that are consistent with public health guidance. To keepCOVID-19down, we must keep up our public health practices."

Generosity can make us live longer, new research shows. Now, that’s more important than ever – CNN International

There is a linear relationship between the amount and frequency of wealth transfers and the lengths of individuals' lives, the study results have shown.

"At the beginning of life you are reliant on others," said lead study author Tobias Vogt, who is an assistant professor in the faculty of spatial sciences at the University of Groningen. "It's a good idea to help others throughout the course of our lives."

The researchers' goal was to track data on how every individual in a given society consumes and saves.

Intergenerational wealth transfers can include money, but they can also include houses, benefits or time.

Wealth transfers are more common where social cohesion is high

The researchers recognized that other factors -- such as country's gross domestic product (GDP) and income inequality -- also affect a population's life expectancy and adjusted their models to include those factors.

One likely reason, Vogt said, for the correlation between countries experiencing greater longevity in the presence of financial transfers was that those countries exhibited stronger social cohesion.

To back that up, he cited a 2010 meta-analysis performed by researchers at Brigham Young University -- with an aggregate of 148 separate studies involving a total of more than 300,000 participants. It found that survival was 50% greater for those with stronger social relationships compared to those with lesser or no social bonds.

Sharing leads to long life

Western Europe and Japan ranked highest on data linking resource sharing and lower mortality levels.

France and Japan, the nations with the lowest mortality risk, showed the highest average individual wealth transfers. Theses countries shared between 68% and 69% of their lifetime income, while reporting mortality rates about twice as low as China and Turkey, where people shared between 44% and 48% of their lifetime earnings, according to the study.

"South American countries also rank high in terms of generosity, as they share more than 60% of an average individual's lifetime income," the researchers reported.

On the low side of the spectrum, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia were those in which people were least able to share portions of their lifetime earnings and experienced shorter life spans.

This research complements findings in the UN's World Happiness Report

Generosity and life expectancy are among the six variables scientists look at when making the World Happiness Report, which is released annually by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations.

This year, even as the coronavirus pandemic swept Europe, Finland held on to its happiest country title for a third straight year.

"Generous behavior is related to trust and mutual regard and a sense of being together," said John Helliwell, co-editor of the World Happiness Report and professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia. "People who are happier are subsequently healthier."

Vogt and his team's research fit in well with the body of science the UN and researchers around the world have been monitoring since 2012 as they have cultivated the happiness index, Helliwell said.

Societies with high mutual trust are more likely to be resilient, and that could be seen in how they have fared recently against the coronavirus, he explained.

Those nations succesfully keeping the virus at bay, such as Norway and New Zealand, are places where people trust each other.

"There's an evolutionary story being told by this (paper)," he said, that our collective endurance as a species isn't about survival of the fittest individuals, but rather about survival of the most cooperative societies.

"To the extent generosity adds to longevity, it's about our resilience to disease, or to earthquakes, or changes in climate," Helliwell said. "Leaders must broaden our capacity to help one another."

These results have relevance to the pandemic

In a year of pandemic, global GDP is expected to drop by 5.2%, according to a World Bank estimate in June.

That means we're in for a lot of lost transfers of value, whether they be a scholarship fund not collecting its annual fundraising goal, a laid-off middle-aged couple struggling with ailing parents' nursing home bills or governments collecting less in taxes during a time of high unemployment.

Although simply spending time with a wiser older relative might be one of the best ways to transfer value from one generation to another, measures such as those would be a subject for a future study, Vogt said.

"We suggest that this support reduces mortality by meeting urgent material needs, but also that sharing generosity may reflect the strength of social connectedness, which itself benefits human health and wellbeing and indirectly raises survival," the researchers wrote in the paper.

As the economic engine grinds to a halt, we're faced with the prospect of our resource crunch resonating in the lives of ourselves, our children and our parents for years to come.

But the social science says there are ways to navigate the dilemma.

"It's important how countries get out of these situations," Vogt said, noting how countries such as Spain and France have high life expectancy and have high social cohesion, characteristics that can help shield them against the worst effects of the pandemic.

One of the most valuable ways to transfer something important to a loved one is to cook and care and read to them, he said.

Healthcare execs say telehealth is their No. 1 pandemic tech problem – Healthcare IT News

A new report from research firm KLAS found that nearly half of the 19 healthcare executives surveyed say that either telehealth functionality or capacity has been their primary problem to solve during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis.

Other major challenges include remote patient monitoring, interoperability, real-time data analytics, work-from-home resources and patient surveillance.

"While healthcare organizations have found stopgaps in many areas, few have successfully implemented permanent solutions that serve a long-term strategy," wrote the report authors.

HIMSS20 Digital

WHY IT MATTERS

As the novel coronavirus pandemic spread across the country this spring, the need became quickly evident for healthcare organizations to spin up telehealth solutions.

Aided by relaxed federal regulations, many health systems modified existing infrastructure or relied on consumer-facing products to fill the gap and address increased demand.

"We have had the ability to perform video visits for six years. Until the middle of March, we had performed just over 1,000 visits total during that time. Since the middle of March, we have performed over 160,000 due to payment waivers and necessity," wrote one customer quoted in the report.

We used a few tactics. First, we used tools like Skype, Google Duo and FaceTime as a stopgap. Then we expanded our Epic/Vidyo integration from urgent care visits to all visit types, including surgical and non-surgical specialties and all primary care. This let us replace the stopgap tools," wrote another respondent.

"We also implemented on-premises telehealth in the ER, ICU and floors; that way, a provider can be in the same building as the patient but not in the same room, decreasing exposure and limiting PPE usage," they continued.

Nearly half of executives said their organization had enhanced telehealth-related electronic health record functionality the most because of the COVID-19 crisis, with another 50% saying they'd enhanced such tools "somewhat."

"While a few leverage EHR dashboards to get the real-time data they need, most load the data from their EHRs into other software solutions (e.g., Microsoft Power BI and Tableau) to either house the data or build data visualizations," wrote the report authors.

And although remote patient monitoring has been another technology concern, only four organizations out of 18 say they have a workable solution.

"Eight organizations say their RPM technology problem remains unsolved," write the report authors.

THE LARGER TREND

As the report notes, the longevity of telehealth is still uncertain. Although many legislators have signaled their support for some permanent policies that would enable access to virtual care, the details particularly around reimbursement remain murky.

This past month, the American Hospital Association wrote an open letter to President Donald Trump and leaders at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services urging them to take specific actions to safeguard telehealth in the longer term.

"We urge the Administration to work with the AHA and Congress to create a future for telehealth that allows not only clinicians, but also hospitals and health systems, to code and bill for virtual services," wrote AHA president and CEO Richard J. Pollack.

ON THE RECORD

Regarding the executives surveyed in the KLAS report, "Several mentioned using consumer-facing products e.g., Apple FaceTime, Google Duo, Zoom or Skype that enable organizations without existing telehealth capabilities to quickly ramp up and handle increased demand," wrote the authors.

"While many solutions are suitable for this emergency purpose, solutions that serve a strategic, long-term telehealth vision are much scarcer," they continued.

As older consumers radically change their spending patterns, what do investors need to know? – Prospect

Even without a second wave of infections, Covid-19 has done brutal damage to businesses such as restaurants, pubs, travel and tourism firms and those in the arts, entertainment and culture sectorsthe businesses that exist because we are (or were) social beings.

Share prices across these sectors are down by up to 60 per cent since early March. By high summer, 48 per cent of arts, entertainment and recreation businesses and 22 per cent of accommodation and food service companies were closed with no concrete plans to reopen, according to the ONS. As government life-support is switched off, weaker players will disappear.

Millions of jobs, as well as all hopes of returning to a normal social life, now depend on reviving businesses that live or die on human interaction. Tackling this challenge will be especially hard because Covid-19 is most dangerous for those we increasingly rely on to sustain these sectors: older consumers.

The International Longevity Centre published a report last year, Maximising the Longevity Dividend, highlighting huge projected growth in the spending power of consumers aged 50-plus over coming decades. This will happen, the ILC said, because the number of older people is rising, but also because their wealth is increasing. People aged 50-plus accounted for 30 per cent of total earnings in 2018, the ILC reported, which would rise to 40 per cent by 2040. Older people would account for 63 per cent of consumer spending by then. Most importantly, the ILC said: People aged 50 and over are shifting their spending towards non-essential purchases such as leisure. The top three growing sectors for older consumers are recreation and culture; transport; and household goods and services.

There are signs Covid-19 has reversed that trend. According to YouGov polling carried out as pubs were reopening, around 55 per cent of people aged 50-plus would not venture back until later this year at the earliest, and around 10 per cent said they never would. If they are as good as their word, the hit to leisure spending will be large, even allowing for areas that prosperbicycle sales, perhaps, and other outdoor pursuits.

And if the cash-strapped government ends the triple lock on annual state pension increases of at least 2.5 per cent, the impact on our struggling leisure sector could be greater still.

For investors, the message is clear. Keep an eye on how behaviour among older consumers is evolving: it will shape returns. And all of us should remember that quite apart from any moral obligation, keeping older people safe is hugely in our collective economic interests.

SU Greek Life moves to virtual recruitment to sustain active membership and pride – The Slate Online

With COVID-19 coronavirus concerns leading officials to enforce new social distancing and conduct rules, Shippensburg Universitys Greek life chapters must find a new way to stay alive.

Greek life members had a tough time dealing with the pandemic as the campus closed during the middle of spring recruitment last semester.

With human interaction being cut down, chapters have found ways to keep in contact and keep up with chapters needs. Alpha Sigma Tau member Brooke Hopkins said.

Hopkins said Zoom has provided a way for the sisters to remain connected.

The Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council (IFC) came to the decision to have both Zoom and in-person meetings for fall recruitment in order to safely gain new membership.

Fall recruitment is considered informal, meaning an undergraduate student may choose which sorority or fraternity event they want to attend. For many Greek life members, fall recruitment is considered more relaxed than the formal spring recruitment process.

A major part of the recruitment process is connecting and bonding with the new recruits. Many Greek chapters fear that they will not be able to properly connect with potential new members due to online meetings and social distancing. Like other student groups, Greek life chapters must limit the number of members present during in-person meetings.

Since we have a much more limited time scale with the new members, we have all been focusing on how to have the best possible conversations and how to really get to know the potential new members before giving outbids, Panhellenic Council Recruitment Chair Emily Drennan said.

The Panhellenic Council started its recruitment last Thursday by advertising on social media and providing a sign-up link in each chapters Instagram bio. The sign-up survey will show the number of potential members who prefer online sessions or in-person meetings and events. The responses will help chapter officials to plan recruitment events for the fall.

SU Greek life officials suspended all social functions other than recruitment until further notice to try to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and to ensure that sororities and fraternities can continue to remain active and enroll new members.

We understand that this decision will not come easy to many, but we are asking you all to put the longevity and health of our chapters above the social culture that we have become accustomed to, IFC officials said in a statement.

All recruitment events must be held on campus this semester with all Greek chapters and potential new members wearing a mask and also must abide by the social distancing protocols.

With coronavirus concerns, sororities and fraternities are anxious on the number of new recruits they might gain. Drennan said she hopes each sorority will have a healthy sized new member class, but it is too early to tell.

The total that was set for this semester was 38,so many chapters have the potential to get about 10 new members. However, we will have to wait and see if that is possible this semester with everything going on, Drennan said.

Despite recruitment concerns, Greek Life will not allow fall informal freshman recruitment this semester. The Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council will not break the rules nor SUs policy of including students without a GPA.
