The top 10 countries where veganism is most popular have been revealed in a new list.

Chef's Pencil compiled the list by analyzing Google Trends data, which it describes as a 'reliable source of big data', to search interest level for veganism across the world.

It found that searches in the veganism category (including vegan-related searches made in any language) were at an all-time high in 2020.

In a statement sent to Plant Based News, Chef's Pencil revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped the rise of veganism but has 'added fuel to its popularity'.

The organization added that searches for vegan recipes have skyrocketed, and continue to go strong - even though lockdown has come to an end in most parts of the world and many restaurants have re-opened.

Search data showed that countries whose cuisine traditionally is greatly meat- and dairy-based are seeing a big rise in veganism, said Chef's Pencil, which it concluded means that 'veganism is stronger than ever'.

Miley Cyrus has been a vegan for years, but she just revealed in a new interview that shes stopped the diet because it was negatively impacting her health. But, she says, shes not happy about it.

Miley dropped the knowledge on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Wednesday. I was vegan for a very long time and Ive had to introduce fish and omegas into my life because my brain wasnt functioning properly, she said. Miley said she also was having intense hip pain that she thinks was due to her vegan diet.

FWIW: Miley knows some people arent going to be happy with that news. Vegans are going to come for me and thats OK. Im used to people coming for me, she said.

Miley said she followed the strictest [vegan diet] youve ever known from 2013 to 2019, and her first non-vegan meal was cooked by her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. My ex-husband cooked me some fish on the grill, she said. I cried, like, for a long time. I cried for the fish it really hurts me to eat fish.

But while she doesnt exactly love eating fish, Miley said its really improved her health and her thinking. Now Im so much sharper than I was and I think that I was, at one point, pretty malnutritioned, she said. I remember going to Glastonbury [music festival] and that was a show that I lovedI loved my performancebut I was running on empty. Shes also added gluten back into her diet, BTW.

Miley said its really terrifying to leave veganism because of the backlash she might receive, but she wants people to know that she still loves animals. I have 22 animals on my farm in Nashville, Ive got 22 in my house in Calabasas, Im doing all I need to do for the animals, she said. But when it comes to my brain you cant be vegan and be this quick.

So, Miley now considers herself a pescatarian (i.e. a vegetarian who eats fish). Thats where Im at, she said. But, in true Miley style, shes open to other eating plans. Im experimenting a lot with my diet, and my body, and my routine and my exercise right now, she said.

And yeah, Miley called it: She's already getting served some haterade on Twitter over ending her vegan diet.

Miley Cyrus made headlines this week for announcing she's no longer vegan - claiming her half-a-decade abstinence from animal products had left her brain unable to 'function properly'.

The singer's confession to nonother than carnivore enthusiast Joe Rogan stirred up quite the frenzy online - with social media users blasting the celeb for 'spreading false information' about plant-based diets.

And just as the storm was settling - heavyweight champ Mike Tyson also denounced himself from veganism - as he sat against the same purple-curtained backdrop as Cyrus.

The boxer, who previously said he refused to eat 'anything with a mother', confessed to eating 'wild' meat such as elk and bison before commencing training to re-enter the ring.

He told Rogan that without animal-products, he would be unable to achieve what he 'wanted his body to look like' - before nonchalantly discussing if the hunter could kill a bison for him.

Rogan, who has a propensity to new diet trends and fads, has never shied away from discussing veganism - to the point where vegan ultra-endurance athlete Rich Roll said he 'brings up veganism more than I do'.

In fact, Rogan's podcast has pretty much become a battleground for discussing veganism in recent times. He often invites low-carb / keto diet proponents with quack credentials who, at best, are unqualified to make the statements they so confidently do.

Take for example paleo advocate and licensed acupuncturist Chris Kresser - who was welcomed onto The Joe Rogan Experience to 'debunk' The Game Changers documentary and described it as 'vegan propaganda'.

Rogan never deleted the interview with Kresser, even after praising producer James Wilks for defending the film's criticism - adding that he 'knocked it out of the park'.

Discussions around veganism are of course healthy, and even essential to rid some of the myths that even vegans are guilty of propagating, but there's something that seems so frivolous about Rogan and the way he toys with veganism - giving voice to those who will bash out unsupported claims and seldom presenting credible and respected figures to debate.

Rogan's bias is also evident. Last year he was slammed by renowned Cardiologist Dr. Joel Kahn for being 'funded by meat companies'- saying that they're his podcast's 'number one sponsor'. Dr. Kahn also added that supporting pro-plant-based films like The Game Changers has the ability to 'threaten his audience'.

Which is clear, when Rogan relishes in vegans leaving the movement and doesn't question their blatant pseudoscience - despite admitting that his carnivore diet made him 'more aggressive' and made him fear soiling himself.

Just like Kresser's attack on The Game Changers, Cyrus's justification for eating fish and feeling 'so much sharper' for it have already been flattened.

"It's important to note that the research on omega-3 supplements (EPA/DHA) and cognitive function is mixed, with potential benefit in older adults specifically. Of course, fish is a source of these omega-3s, but so is a vegan algae-based supplement," he said.

"That being said, it is unclear if vegans even need to supplement since we produce EPA and DHA from short-chain omega-3s (ALA) in foods like flax and our levels dont vary much from fish eaters.

He added: "Something that should give pause is when someone notices drastic improvements with a small dietary change. This SCREAMS placebo effect. On a physiological level, its impossible for a few meals of seafood to drastically change omega-3 levels, especially within the brain.

"This becomes even more likely when a vegan has constantly been told that their diet is deficient by those who clearly have not seen the data. We can start to believe itThat being said, we have no clue what Miley was actually eating."

Her brain not functioning properly is such a vague and multifaceted symptom affected by so many things, not just avoiding fish. Sleep deprivation, junk food, stress, not being organized, recreational drugs, etc. can affect cognition negatively.

Tyson's reasons were, in a way, too vague and anecdotal to properly debunk - but it's clear from the array of vegan bodybuilders, strongmen, and athletes that you can be in top shape without eating animals.

What Makes a Vegan Product? Or, When is Vegan Not Really Vegan? – vegconomist – the vegan business magazine

When is vegan not-vegan? The answer is subjective and has implications for what are purported to be vegan products. While self-identified vegans dont all share the same conception of the term, most generally agree that nobody can be 100% vegan. Why?

Most vegans recognize that every so-called vegan activity, from eating only a plant-based diet to operating an animal sanctuary, is done at the expense of animals. For example, any use of metal, such as a spoon or farm implement, is made possible only through the displacement (at least) of animals and the destruction of their habitat upon which are built mines, factories, towns, and other infrastructure.

Consequently, vegans also generally agree on a definition of veganism such as this one used by the Vegan Society.Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

The Vegan Society adds that vegans also avoid animal-derived materials, productstested on animals and placesthat use animals for entertainment.

Products, then, can be said to be vegan if they exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation and cruelty. As we know, many and increasingly more products manage to do that. However, a number of ventures that are claimed to be vegan involve the exploitation of non-human animals. Some vegan food products are tested on animals in order to obtain GRAS accreditation.

A longstanding problem remains: how does one know whether a product is vegan? Fortunately, a longstanding solution exists: the Vegan Trademark. The Vegan Society, which coined the term vegan in 1944, established the Vegan Trademark in 1990. Since then, over 44,000 products around the world have been identified with the Vegan Trademark. Vegans know to look for the Vegan Trademark or some other vegan accreditation symbol there are several when they shop. Click here to learn more about the Vegan Societys Vegan Trademark.

Another, simpler, informal way for a producer to know whether a product is vegan or not is this: consider whether it would be acceptable to put a human in place of the non-human animal used in the research or production process. If it is not acceptable, then the product is not vegan.

For the Black Vegan Company, plant-based eating is a family affair that requires empathy, breakfast tacos – austin360

Everyone has their own reason for eating a plant-based diet.

For Robin Beltrn and her husband, it was purely a medical decision. After surviving an attempted robbery in 2014, Manuel went through a dozen abdominal surgeries. After several years, they finally had to accept that his stomach could no longer process meat or dairy.

The only problem was: She had no idea how to prepare meat-free foods. "I knew no vegans," she says.

They had two young children, and Robin decided the whole family would become vegan to support Manuel. People who have been through trauma already feel excluded and isolated, she says, and for him to be able to eat well and eat what the whole family was eating became her primary focus.

"Instead of cooking these separate meals for him, we wanted to do this together," she says.

She spent hours a day researching new-to-her ingredients and recipes. She started adding turmeric and paprika to her food to help relieve his inflammation. They switched to Himalayan sea salt, which is packed with minerals and tastes saltier than table salt, and that inspired them to use less salt.

"We didnt have much money, but instead of spending more money on a prescription we couldnt afford, we spent what we could on food," she says.

Her daughter was just an infant, and her son was at that "snacky 2 to 3" phrase, so she started replacing her kids favorite yogurts, milks and ice creams with plant milk-based products. She started using coconut milk in her coffee.

They both started doing yoga, and Manuels PTSD subsided. Shed been dealing with hair loss, but her hair grew back, and she lost a substantial amount of weight, but more importantly, their whole outlook on life changed. Outside their immediate family, however, Robin, who is Black, and Manuel, who is Hispanic, found themselves having to explain their dietary decisions, over and over again.

"When I finally told my family, they didnt really get it, but I told them, Im trying to save my husband and my hair is growing and I feel happy," she says.

The fog lifted

One of their friends, Rolando Rodriguez, had noticed those not-so-subtle improvements to their life.

The longtime friends grew up in Houston. Beltrn had long called Austin home, and Rodriguez was still in Houston, where they had recently been dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. "My body wasnt able to keep up with the physical work that needed to be done," Rodriguez says.

The Beltrns started hosting a Sunday dinner once a month, which is where Rodriguez first realized that vegan food wasnt all "mystery meat" and boring salads.

Rodriguez says he grew up watching family members struggle with diabetes, including losing limbs to the disease. "I had been trained to believe that the disease was hereditary, which it is, but food habits are also hereditary. The way we eat is passed down to us," he says.

After trying Robins food and seeing the positive changes in their whole family, he decided he wanted to start changing those habits.

"Over two years, Im watching my friends go through this dramatic change, mentally and physically. I said, I want to partake in that," he says.

Rodriguez had struggled for years with anxiety and depression, and he thought those were just normal things he was going to have to deal with as an adult. But he quit meat "cold turkey," and he started to experience some of the same physical and mental benefits. "The fog lifted and I was able to concentrate," he says.

Rodriguez and Beltrn started talking about what it would look like if they started a company to share what they were learning with other people.

They sent a batch of Beltrns five-alarm chili to their friend and fellow Houston native Nicole Valadez, who was living in Washington, D.C. "I ate the entire batch," she says. "I saw Rolando slimming up and feeling better and decided I wanted to make the switch, too."

Going vegan herself was easy, she says, but it was telling her family in Houston that she knew would be the hardest part. "Its so important for us to have our family traditions," Valadez says, so she started thinking about ways she could make vegan tamales at Christmas by using jackfruit instead of pork and what egg substitute she could use VeganEgg is her favorite so her mom still could make her breakfast tacos on the mornings when she visits.

"It was important to make culturally relevant dishes that are meaningful to me so we could make them vegan and not miss out on dinners with my family," she says.

Breakfast tacos are a particularly meaningful dish for Rodriguez, too. "To give up the idea of breakfast tacos on a Saturday morning, thats stripping away an incredible tradition for me," he says. "What is my grandmother going to say or think about me if I tell her I cant eat them? There are familiar consequences to changing your diet in our communities."

But when you find an alternative that everyone can eat like a ground beef or chorizo substitute, jackfruit or hearts of palm instead of pulled chicken or pork or that VeganEgg it allows people who are eating a plant-based diet to maintain those close bonds with their loved ones.

"These are very real positive consequences about how we live our lives and interact with our families," he says.

Empathy and eating together

Opening peoples eyes to the possibilities of vegan eating while taking into account very real cultural needs is what drives everything about the Black Vegan Company, from the online cooking classes and virtual and in-person grocery store tours that Beltrn hosts to the new products that the rest of the team members are hoping to sell in grocery stores soon. They also have a cookbook in production.

Plant-based eating has grown immensely in the past decade. Some people are drawn to it because of health and medical reasons, and others feel compelled to avoid meat and dairy products because of ethics or the environmental effects.

But no matter why, when or how someone eats a plant-based diet, there are nutritional, culinary, cultural and relationship factors at play.

The Black Vegan Company wants to help people address all of those by encouraging people to ask deeper questions about what role food plays in the home and how a plant-based diet can fit within a familys time and financial budget. What culturally relevant foods are important to the extended family, and how can a wider social group have healthier conversations about what we eat and why? How can we teach and lean on each other without judging others food choices?

When veganism is presented as trading something "regular" for something "weird," that can be the root of many problems, Beltrn says. Its important to normalize plant-based eating and have empathy for the transitional issues that come when making a big dietary change.

Food is how we show love to each other, Rodriguez says, and its not uncommon for a parent who is used to showing love to their kids through food to go through a mourning period when they cant or dont want to serve the kinds of food they used to.

Valadez, who now also works with the Black Vegan Company, wrote about her family going through all five stages of grief when she told them about her transition to veganism ahead of Thanksgiving one year. "They were angry, they were in denial, they tried to bargain, all of it," she says. "Eventually, they got to acceptance," but it remains an ongoing and profound conversation about cultural values, as well as health and wellness.

"We want to show people how to talk to their brothers and sisters who are going to give you a hard time at the holidays," Rodriguez says. "One way is to remind them, This isnt about you. I need your empathy.

"Were striving for more civil discourse, and its a marathon, not a sprint. Both sides can be less judgy of each other. Vegans feel judged for trying something new, and vegans judge the nonvegans for not adopting their way of eating."

Making it a family affair

Beltrn says she tells clients to be realistic about expectations that they can relearn entirely how to grocery shop and cook in just a day or two.

When a family first starts this transition, Beltrn asks them to list what foods they like to eat and what are their must-haves in order to survive, the gotta-have pantry and fridge staples. Then, start looking for good plant-based alternatives for each one, maybe starting with a single product each week, say, yogurt or milk. Buy a few brands, but not the original product youre used to buying, and see which one gets the most votes in a family taste test. "There are definitely different stages of veganism," she says. There might be a stage when youre upset or your kid is mad that they cant have what they want, but that desire to re-create some of those favorite textures and tastes will drive your familys discoveries, both in the kitchen and in the grocery store.

This is about learning together and bending together. "If your kid wanted to play basketball, youd put a goal out there and get a ball and support them on their journey," Beltrn says. Its OK if not everyone eats the same all the time, but its also important to make sure that everyone feels like they are included at the family table.

Eating meatless meals a few days a week is one way to ease into it, Beltrn says, and its important to have the whole family involved in picking some of these new dishes to try, such as cauliflower buffalo "wings" or barbecue sliders made from jackfruit.

"Then it becomes a family activity and something you are doing together, even if you arent doing it seven days a week," Beltrn says.

She also encourages people not to get frustrated if they try a new product or a new recipe and dont like it. There are hundreds of products on the market, and one persons way of cooking meat-free foods might not be aligned with the kind of foods you like. Try out new sources for recipes until you find someone whose tastes "fit" with yours.

"Dairy is the part that freaks everybody out," she says, but vegan substitutes have improved so much over the past 10 years that there are plenty of options sold in mainstream grocery stores that satisfy even the most fervent cheese- and ice cream-lovers. Beltrns favorites are Daiya, which makes a cheeselike product that shreds and melts, and Chao from Field Roast.

Major improvements also have been made to meat substitutes, such as those from Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat, but as a health and wellness coach, Beltrn explains that processed foods are processed foods and they should often be consumed in moderation.

She usually uses mushrooms and jackfruit to provide a hearty base for a dish that might otherwise be based on meat. When she does use a meat substitute, she adds extra layers of fresh ingredients to add the fiber and nutrients that a body naturally craves.

Beltrn uses JustEgg, another vegan egg substitute, when she makes her fried "chicken" with breadcrumbs and mushrooms, and she uses vegan grounds to make lasagna, spaghetti and chili. (Gardein and Quora are two popular brands, and you also can cook lentils to make a from-scratch version.)

At Thanksgiving, Beltrn makes her familys sweet potato pie using coconut milk instead, and "it is better than the original recipe." That was one way she started to break down the stereotype that vegan dishes were somehow less than nonvegan food.

"The most encouraging thing was when my mom went shopping at the grocery store and came home with all these blueberry dairy-free yogurts. It was the only (vegan) thing in her fridge, but she tried."

Today, her mom is 70% vegan, and she served vegan burgers on the Fourth of July. Thats the kind of small win that Rodriguez says families should celebrate.

"Robins got something special," Rodriguez says. "Heres this Black woman in this very Mexican mans kitchen helping to start this journey together because of a thing that were all too familiar with." But the love of food and people coming together around food, which is also something they are all so familiar with, is also undeniably there.

"These difficult stories, these problems, they can become the beginning of a great story," he says. "For me, it was like what Tupac said (in the song Changes): If you change the way you eat, youll change the way you think and the way you treat each other."

Fried "Chicken" Shrooms

Want that fried chicken taste and crunch without the guilt? Try this fried mushroom recipe to satisfy your craving. Use these bites in poboys, fried "chicken" dinner with mashed potatoes or "chicken" nuggets with ketchup and french fries. Instead of a commercial egg substitute, you can use chickpea water, which is called aquafaba. If you dont want to fry these in oil, use an air fryer set to 375 degrees.

18 to 20 shiitake mushrooms (or oyster mushrooms or black pearl mushrooms)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup fresh dill

2 cups panko breadcrumbs

2 cups flour

2 cups egg replacement (Just Egg or aquafaba)

3 cups olive oil (or use an air fryer)

Cut the stems off mushrooms and wash well to remove any dirt. Completely dry them and slice into rounds of desired thickness (we slice about 1/4-inch rounds).

In a bowl, combine salt, dill, breadcrumbs and flour. Mix thoroughly.

Dip the mushrooms in the "egg" wash. Immediately after, dip them in the breadcrumb mixture. For best results, dip/coat one slice at a time. Place the dipped/coated mushrooms to the side on a plate.

Once youve finished dipping/coating all the mushrooms, add 3 cups of olive oil to a deep fryer or skillet. (You can use an air fryer instead for a lower-calorie dish.)

Set oil to medium-high heat on the stove or 375 degrees in the deep fryer. (You can also use 375 degrees in the air fryer.)

Fry mushrooms until golden brown (2 to 4 minutes total). If frying in pan, flip mushrooms to fry on both sides. Place fried mushrooms on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.

Allow mushrooms to cool for 3 to 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh dill (optional). Serves 4.

Jalapeo Aioli

1/3 cup vegan sour cream or mayo

1 tablespoon fresh dill

1/2 teaspoon pink Himalayan sea salt

1 lemon, squeezed

1/2 to 1 teaspoon chopped jalapeo (optional)

To a bowl, add the sour cream (or mayo), dill, salt, lemon juice and jalapeo, if using. Mix thoroughly. Serve with fried "chicken" mushrooms.

Guajillo Jackfruit "Pork"

Whenever I prepare a dish that my nonvegan family says tastes as good as stuff with meat in it, I do a little happy dance. I love exposing them to new, healthy ways of consuming our favorite classics and reprogramming what they think about veganism. During one holiday season, the recipe that knocked it out of the park was a vegan take on pork tamales. In order to mimic pork for this recipe, we used jackfruit. Jackfruit is a large fruit grown in tropical regions of the world. I like cooking with it because it looks like and has the consistency of shredded beef or pork. This makes it the perfect meat substitute for dishes that require a shredded, meaty texture, like pork tamales or pulled pork sandwiches. I like to use the Jackfruit Companys lightly seasoned frozen jackfruit. This quantity of guajillo sauce and filling will make about 10 dozen tamales, but you can reduce the quantity by half if you want to make a smaller batch or use the filling in another way. The technique of cooking the jackfruit could be adapted for making barbecue-style sandwiches.

For the guajillo sauce:

15 guajillo chiles

3 ancho chiles

6 garlic cloves, peeled

1/2 onion, halved

2 teaspoon salt

For the jackfruit "pork":

1/2 cup olive oil

1/4 cup diced onion

6 1/2 cups jackfruit

1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon garlic powder

3 teaspoons onion powder

2 teaspoons brown sugar

Salt, to taste

To make the sauce: Fill a large pot with water and set on high heat. While you wait for the water to boil, remove the stems from the guajillo and ancho chiles. Slice each chile in half and remove the seeds. Once the water is at a rolling boil, add the chiles, garlic and onion. Boil until the peppers are soft, about 30 minutes.

Transfer peppers, garlic and onion to a blender and add salt. Blend until smooth and add salt to taste, as needed. The sauce should be well salted, smooth and not very thick. Add a bit of water and blend if too thick. Set aside.

For the jackfruit, set a large pan to medium heat. Once hot, add olive oil and diced onion. Saut onions until they are a bit translucent, about 3 minutes. Lower heat slightly if onion begins to brown.

Add jackfruit to the pan and mash it to break up the large pieces. Once fully mashed, the jackfruit should resemble shredded beef.

For twenty years, the Michelin brothers gave out the guide at no cost. However, in 1920, the duo launched a brand new guide, which sold for seven francs. According to Michelin, the new Michelin Guide featured a list of local French restaurants and other establishments like gas stations and hotels to help improve motorists travel experiences.

Due to the growing popularity of the guides restaurant review section, the brothers hired a team of restaurant inspectors to better rate the restaurants. And in 1926, the company began awarding one Michelin star to fine dining establishments in France.

In 1931, the company expanded its rating system to include three stars. Five years later, the company published its criteria for ranking restaurants.

The Michelin Guide awards one star to a very good restaurant, two stars to a restaurant that has excellent cooking that is worth a detour, and three stars to a restaurant that has exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.

The Michelin Guide now publishes editions in a number of countries. These include the U.S., China, and Belgium. The former received its first guide in 2005.

The inspector added: Only set menus are served, with masterfully created and artfully presented dishes, including some old-fashioned labour-intensive recipes. Tea culture is also closely related to Zen. Which is why the restaurant offers tea pairings where four different Chinese teas are served to complement the dishes.

The restaurants vegan menu includes options like crackers with eggplant puree. It also offers beetroot rolls with chickpea filling and a mix of avocado, mango, and tomatoes in a seaweed waffle cone.

In November 2019, Beijing-based restaurant Kings Joy was only one of two restaurants that entered the inaugural selection of the Michelin Guide Beijing.

The Michelin Guide awarded the vegetarian restaurant a coveted two stars. It offers vegan options and serves a variety of dishes featuring organic vegetables from local farms.

In the review, Michelins inspector said: Try [the chefs] tasting menu for culinary highlights, such as honeylocust, fox nuts, and peas, as well as rice with assorted mushrooms and peach resin, both delivering a nice contrast of textures.

Located right in the heart of Vienna, this Michelin-starred restaurant features an elegant plant-based menu created using regionally sourced ingredients. The fine-dining restaurant, opened by Austrian restaurateur Christian Halper, also sources some of its produce from its own garden.

Michelins inspector said: The depth of flavour that youll find in the exclusively vegan and vegetarian dishes on offer here is remarkable!

The inspector added: And how about a bottle from the ever-growing selection of organic wines? Or perhaps one of the restaurants home-made alcohol-free drinks to wash down the sophisticated, flavoursome fare?

The Michelin Guide awarded this vegetable-centric, New York-based restaurant one star as part of its 2020 New York City guide. The distinction makes Nix the only vegetarian restaurant in the U.S. to have a Michelin star.

The [menus] main section is divided between lighter and bolder dishes, complete with an asterisk highlighting those preparations that can be made vegan, the Michelin inspector said in the review.

The inspector said that the chef and owner, John Fraser, relied on influences from around the world to bring out the individual flavors of his market produce.This includes flavors like sweet hoisin sauce and spicy Thai chili.

Joias chef, Pietro Leemann, opened the restaurant in 1989. In 1996, Joia became the first vegetarian restaurant in Italy to receive a Michelin star.

In the review, Michelins inspector wrote that Leemann became a vegetarian after a gradual philosophical and spiritual transformation in Asia.

I remember going back to school in the fall and my parents making me go to bed when it was still light out. Boy I hated that. But they were right, I did need my sleep. The amount of sleep a person needs is not set in stone; it varies by individual and even over the years.

babies need 12-16 hours a day

toddlers need 11-14 hours a day

preschoolers need 10-13 hours day

school aged kids need 9-12 hours each night

teens need 8-10 hours each night

adults generally need 7-8 hours on a regular schedule.

Health and wellness are focus of New Milford non-profit

NEW MILFORD Inspiration and empowerment.

These are two key elements Hamilton Ham Brower of New Milford is sharing through his nonprofit organization, Stand Up 4 Health.

Through the sharing of resources, and by offering workshops, events and other activities, Brower said he hopes to inspire individuals through educational resources on preventative health care and foundational solutions for optimal health.

We believe that you dont know when you dont know, Brower said of the organizations mission statement. But that we can all learn.

Brower recently began offering a variety of workshops and events at The Henderson Center for Excellence for Youth Empowerment at The Silo on Upland Road in the Northville section of New Milford, where he was invited by Alessandro Piovezahn, chairman of the board at Hunt Hill Farm nonprofit organization, to set up a health and wellness sanctuary at the site.

Resident Jeanne Street, a local spiritual medium, healer and author, learned of Stand Up 4 Healths mission and the opportunity to build a holistic type of hub at The Silo and felt moved to participate.

Hes selfless, Street said of Brower. Everything hes doing is for love, its on the vibration of love. Its giving back and sharing. Its humanitarian.

Street is offering a meditations series and has offered health workshops at The Silo already. She also interviewed Brower for her Angels Dont Lie podcast.

Sheree Sudram, a licensed hypnotherapist and former manager of the wellness department at Mountainside Treatment Center in Canaan, learned of Browers efforts at The Silo and is now helping tend the herb garden, formerly cared for by the late Ruth Henderson, who with her husband Skip purchased the property on which The Silo is situated in 1968.

I felt like were all kindred spirits, Sudram said of Brower and others she has met who are involved with Stand Up 4 Health and The Silo.

A drum circle is also being coordinated.

Having the opportunity to help Piovezahn create a health and wellness sanctuary at The Silo is important to Brower.

When Alessandro and I started talking about this, I just wept, Brower said of the instant connection and vision he and Piovezahn shared when they spoke of a health and wellness sanctuary. This (opportunity) is pure, unadulterated joy and bliss.

Brower has long felt called to share a message about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle that can optimize ones physical body and spiritual self.

Once I stepped in to Stand Up 4 Health, I knew it was the commitment I had made in 1995 to find the health, energy and strength to become the light, so that I can walk in the darkness and illuminate the path for others, so they dont have to live in fear, Brower related.

Brower said he masked the pain and fear he had after being diagnosed with HIV in 1989.

I was trying to project an image of health (as a body builder), but I was hiding my illness from everybody, Brower admit. What I really managed to do was, not just hide it from everyone else, but hide it from myself.

By the mid-1990s, Brower had developed full-blown AIDS. He was adamant that his life his story was not going to be like the one portrayed in the movie Philadelphia.

The movie wasnt going to be my Troy, he said, citing how the realization was the turning point of his life, when he committed to educate himself so he could survive his health issues.

Survival mode is necessary, but its fight or flight, and thats inflammatory and fear based, said Brower, who over the years developed recognition for his walks downtown with his late dog, Buddy.

Now, as he immerses himself into Stand Up 4 Health, Brower claims he is finally thriving.

To thrive, thats a huge leap, he said. Thats when you release your life from fear and you turn it into something, when you dedicate your energy and your spirit and knowledge to help other people thrive. Its when you quit focusing on yourself. When you start thriving, you become selfless.

Stand Up 4 Healths logo a small heart whose line extends out in ripples into the shape of an apple designed by Browers friend, illustrates that message.

Its loving each other from the inside out, living authentically, living from survivor to thriver, Brower said.

Brower said in the late 1990s, when he was in his late 20s, he was in survival mode and participated as an activist to fight to get breakthrough medications released sooner than later.

Everyone around me was dying, he said.

After hearing Mathilde Krim, who was a medical researcher and founding chairwoman of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, relay to the world that it isnt any one medicine to help patients with HIV/AIDS, but rather a cocktail, he began to understand health in a new way.

Brower was part of a study with David Ho, who introduced a number of scientific contributions to the understanding and treatment of HIV infection. It really helped people, including me, he said.

Our bodies are designed to heal themselves, Brower explained. They want to survive, they just have to be given the right ingredients so they can do what they can do. Those ingredients arent Twinkies and Big Macs.

In 2009, after doing well on medicine, Brower suffered a major heart attack that led him to a visit to Dr. Tamara Sachs, an integrative medicine doctor in town.

It was then Brower realized he was neglecting the root cause of why his body wasnt functioning at peak because he wasnt giving it proper levels of nutrition to aid the body in healing itself.

Brower emphasized the importance of healthy food choices, many of which are plant based and rich in nutrients.

He made lifestyle changes, most importantly eating healthier. He also learned about Juice Plus+ products, which are made from juice powder concentrates and oils from more than 40 different fruits, and grains, and tower gardens, which enable individuals to grow fresh, nutrient-rich food without soil.

In recent years, Brower has donated more than 20 towers to various sites, including schools, The Silo and other locations.

He is exploring making donations of fresh produce grown on the towers through a collaboration with the towns food bank.

I want to educate people how our bodies function and how to optimize our physiology, too, so we can all thrive, Brower related.

As a non-profit, Brower is committed to donate 100 percent of what he makes from the sale of the book he co-wrote with Annette Parker Martin, Magnificent Words to Live By, Juice Plus+ and Tower Gardens and anything else he does to fund the Stand Up 4 Health mission.

Sudram described herself as a strong proponent of wellness and who, like Brower, believes that humans are multi-faceted beings who need the mind, body and spirit to all be working well to be functionally at its best.

If the body is showing symptoms of something, thats a symptom of a larger issue, said Sudram, who plans to offer workshops for Stand Up 4 Health.

The collaboration between Stand U 4 Health and The Silo is a positive thing for the community, Sudram said.

Its a real nurturing environment to serve everyone in the community from all walks of life, she said.

Strive to Thrive comes to an end; winner announced – Richland Source

Editor's Note: The Strive to Thrive competition launched in January 2020 after nine local contestants were chosen by Richland Source and OhioHealth Ontario Health & Fitness to compete in a 12-week weight loss challenge.

MANSFIELD After seven months of exercise, waiting through delays due to COVID-19 and contestants maintaining self-discipline, the Strive to Thrive contest officially came to a close, crowning Sue Hunt as the winner.

Based on the relative change of body fat percentage in the final weekly contestant standings, Hunt won after a relative change of 10.6% followed by Justin Brant with 9.2%.

It was really tough and I wasn't 100% on track, Hunt admitted. I was kind of slipping back into my larger portion eating ways, although I still tried to eat the good things and not so much of the not so good things.

The Strive to Thrive contest began in January 2020 and has now concluded.

The contest began in January 2020. The fitness team at OhioHealth and Richland Source embarked on a 12-week contest called 'Strive to Thrive.

From the start, we saw commitment from our contestantseating right and making time to exercise. When fitness centers were required to shut down and quarantine due to COVID, contestants were not deterred, wrote Emily Freeman, OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center supervisor.

At the start of the competition nine contestants participated, but with COVID-19 a few dropped out, leaving only five contestants in the running to receive a one-year gym membership at OhioHealth training facilities.

The OhioHealth fitness team quickly adapted to virtual programming, providing online workouts and emailed support, Freeman wrote. After four months of quarantine contestants saw a reduction in body composition and weight. They adapted new skills in overcoming challenges to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

At the start of the competition nine contestants participated, but with COVID-19 a few dropped out, leaving only five contestants in the running.

Hunts original goal for the competition was to get back in shape so she could be able to play tennis again. She made great progress and maintained the lead throughout the competition, though COVID-19 ended up setting her back. In order to maintain her workout regimen, Hunt took her dog out for long walks and purchased a set of dumbbells to workout with at home.

After winning, Hunt, who works as an administrative assistant at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and is already eligible for a reimbursable membership through OhioHealth's insurance, decided to give her one year membership to the runner up.

I didn't know who was in second but I'm happy that somebody will be able to make good use of it, Hunt said. With the hospital reimbursing associates memberships, it just didn't seem fair for me to take it all.

While taking extraordinary measures to keep their facility safe, OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center is also offering to waive enrollment fees in the month of September, allowing new members and Strive to Thrive contestants to join with the first month for free.

For Hunt, winning was never her goal, but rather making a healthy change for herself. However, along the way she also built camaraderie with the other contestants, which she found to be the biggest takeaway from the competition. Shes already signed up for the Mission Slim Possible Program offered by OhioHealth, a body fat loss competition, where she hopes to achieve another goal she sets for herself.

Generally when I talked to the other (Strive to Thrive) contestants that was pretty much what they saidthat they wanted to make this change for themselves, and I think that's important," Hunt said. "We have to take care of ourselves and even more so this year than ever before.

Neuroscientists understand a great deal about the brain, and new studies continue to unlock the science of memory. How does memory form in the brain, and what exactly happens when we recall something?

Memories arent locked away in one particular place in the brain. Different areas of the brain are responsible for various aspects of memory, according to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The amygdala is associated with emotional responses, such as fear. The striatum is associated with memories of skills, and the hippocampus and temporal lobes are both essential for forming and recalling memories.

When you experience an event, it doesnt just instantly become a memory that is stored in your brain forever. There are three main steps to forming memories.

First, memories are encoded in your brain. This happens at synapses, which are the connections between brain cells called neurons.

These connections become either stronger or weaker, says Christine Smith, Ph.D. She is a memory researcher at Research Service, Veterans Affairs, San Diego Healthcare System and teaches psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

She adds, The cells that are activated at the time that the event happens are the same ones that will be involved later when you remember that event.

The connections between neurons start out weak and become stronger the more often you are exposed to the event. This explains why, for example, you still remember your childhood phone number but not the name of a person you met once.

Dr. Smith explains that when you recall a memory, the brain cells that were active when the memory was formed are reactivated. If the memory is a few years old, a structure called the hippocampus is involved with reactivating those cells and pulling the memory together so that you experience that as a remembered event.

Of course, we dont remember every moment of our lives. We simply dont need to access all that excessive information. Instead, we tend to remember the important things, or those memories that we have accessed the most. Sometimes a cue can help reactivate dusty old memories, such as when a specific scent reminds you of a person, place or time in your life.

As time passes, the connections become solidified or consolidated. The synapses for memories you retrieve often become stronger and therefore part of your long-term memories. Other connections between neurons weaken with time, causing you to forget those moments.

According to RIT, this normal process of losing memory over time is called memory trace decay. Sometimes, forgetting is due to encoding failure, which is when you dont process the information and therefore never had the memory in the first place. Lastly, there is a type of forgetting called interference theory, which is when other information interferes with your ability to retain new memories. For example, when you know the word for chair in one language, it can block your ability to remember the word for chair in another language.

There are two main types of memory: short-term and long-term. But within long-term memory, there are two sub-categories: explicit, or conscious memory, and implicit, or unconscious memory.

Your working memory, or short-term memory, can only hold a few items and lasts for about 20 seconds, according to RIT. Its helpful for when we need to hold information in our head for just a moment, and then can move on to other more important things. For example, if someone gives you an instruction, such as signing a piece of paper, you only need to remember that bit of information long enough to do the action that is required. After that, its useless. According to the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), working memory is one of the best predictors of general intelligence, as measured by standard psychological tests.

If you practice enough, such as memorizing the spelling of words, or frequently discussing a favorite event, short-term memories can be strengthened enough to become long-term memories, through the consolidation process that we previously described.

Most of the memories that we think of in a conversational sense are part of your long-term memory. When you remember something that happened in your life, that is a type of long-term memory called an explicit memory. According to QBI, explicit memories can be episodic, such as when you remember a favorite childhood birthday party, or semantic, relating to facts or general knowledge.

Implicit, or unconscious memories are less obvious, but they are embedded in our minds as part of our long-term memory bank. They can be procedural, such as motor skills that you wont forget once youve learned them, like riding a bike or tying your shoes. Another type of implicit memory is caused by priming, when exposure to one stimulus influences your brains response to another, according to QBI. These less obvious memories can influence our habits or phobias.

We arent always aware when were operating based on these prior memories, says Dr. Smith. So we think of them as being predispositions about our personality.

She explains that events that happen to you can become part of your memory repository, although you may not have conscious access to them. So youre doing all sorts of behaviors during the day that you probably dont even realize are a reflection of memory, she says.

Weve explained how memory is supposed to work, but there are many issues that can cause memory loss. Amnesia, for example, can be caused by brain trauma such as a head injury, a stroke or tumor, or chronic alcoholism, according to National Geographic.

A traumatic experience can damage the communication between the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex, according to Scientific American. This is evident, for example, when you are safe but your bodys fear response is triggered by a cue that reminds you of a previously dangerous experience, such as people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Memory loss is a normal part of aging, but some people experience severe memory loss with various types of dementia, such as Alzheimers disease. Its a degenerative disease in which brain cells stop working. Dr. Smith explains that in the early stages of the disease, the memory structures of the brain are affected. At first, patients complain of memory loss. Then as the disease progresses, it also damages other parts of the brain, which causes cognitive problems, attention issues and executive functions, such as loss of language.

By the time someone is diagnosed with Alzheimers disease their brain is very badly damaged, she says. You could show a healthy brain scan and Alzheimers brain scan to a child and they would see a difference. Its very apparent.

When considering what are the four types of memory, we cant assume every person has each type. Some brain disorders affect one part of the memory but not another. For example, Smith describes that someone can have a lesion in the brain that affects their conscious memories, so they have trouble learning new things. But their unconscious memories are fine.

She also describes a condition called cortical blindness, in which people can see and have avoidance reflexes, but they cant recognize what theyre looking at, so they are effectively blind.

They cant see, but if you were to throw a ball at them, they would be able to dodge it.

There is no cure for Alzheimers disease yet. However, people who are prone to memory loss can delay it by living healthy lifestyles. Some people practice brain exercises to fend off memory loss. Smith suggests that there are more interesting ways to keep your brain strong, backed by the science of memory. She advises her patients to focus on a healthy lifestyle with cardiovascular exercise, a nutritious diet and enough sleep. People with higher education have a lower risk of Alzheimers disease, she says, and the idea is that education may build up the brain and delay the onset of the disease. Plus, any kind of personal interaction helps stimulate the br
ain. Getting out into the world, having conversations and trying new things are all excellent brain exercises.

You have more cognitive reserves so you can take more hits before you fail, she says.

In North America, as winter is fast approaches, everyones worried about another COVID-19 lockdown. Social isolation will once again be on everyones minds. AARP Innovation Labs released Alcove, a virtual reality app that enables friends and family to stay connected for Oculus Quest.

Increasingly, with extended times spent indoors, everyone can feel disconnected.

Theres only so much video conferencing anyone can do. Talking about each others day and feeling like you are forcing conversations may not be the optimal way to spend time with your loved ones.

Families need fun. Not everyone can play the type of video game that our children like to play. How to establish a bond between you and your mother, who might be living 3000 miles away? How to enable grandparents to take your children on adventures when they may not be able to go out because of pre-existing health conditions?

Alcove came straight from AARP Innovation Labs to help families go on adventures together in virtual reality worlds modeled after the real world. As we venture further into all corners of the world, the idea is that as the world is feeling closer to us day-to-day, we live our lives together and apart, distributed on different continents and in other countries.

Video conferencing doesnt connect us on a human level. Its playing together or having shared experiences in the world that connects us and brings us closer together.

Rick Robinson, Vice President of AARPs Innovation Labs, says, Alcove allows people to truly break down the barrier of isolation is pretty remarkable. Some people naturally question whether its too complicated or advanced, but based on feedback and our extensive testing with consumers young and old, thats not the case at all.

Robinson suggested that Alcove allows for a much richer way to communicate with one another than current video chat experiences.

On Zoom or other video chat, you can catch up and talk about your day in a very flat way while in VR you can do so much more you can meditate together and travel the world together. You can play games in a completely immersive way.

In the virtual reality world, instead of being immersed inside one experience together, logistically, its easy to switch between experiences. This allows family members to explore different experiences to find what they like the best. Repeating experiences is easy. For instance, building a group meditation habit between a few adult family members is easy and feels immersive.

Robinson says, It is an environment that we like to refer to as your family corner in VR, primarily because of the aesthetic. When you enter, you feel like youre in a home with different rooms you can walk through, taking in all kinds of experiences that surround and envelope you.

Although everyone has an avatar inside Alcoves virtual worlds, the worlds are modeled after real worlds with 360 immersion. With heightened sensory experiences inside the VR world, the experiences can feel calming, soothing, and emotional. This helps to form real bonds between family members.

Cezara Windrem, Innovation Catalyst at AARP Innovation Labs, and Creator and Producer of Alcove, says, "The U.S. military has been using this for a couple of decades now for simulation and training. Now VR and AR are being used a lot more for high-level simulation training, educational programs, and more across industries because of its potential to create new worlds and immerse you in them in a way that can create new memories and allow your brain to make new and deeper connections with the content around. So, we're looking at VR as this complete 360-degree canvas that you are immersing yourself into, and it can be painted with any data information or media. And what's more, you can bring people in there and connect."

When you look at how humans connect, comfort and safety are usually the foundations for real connection. It is also designed to engage family members who might be consistently living in their worlds inside the same house.

As technologies progress, more immersive experiences will involve the integrating different technologies: virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and holographic. It presents a new frontier for technologists to experiment and create new mediums to improve peoples lives.

Windrem says, VR can bring human connection to whole new levelsthrough its power to connect people with each other and the world in immersive ways, which may have been impossible in the past through traditional mediums. This is particularly relevant today, as our society battles the pandemic, social distancing separates us physically from our loved ones, and more and more adults experience social isolation and loneliness because of it.

Gilmore Health: A Q&A Session on Genetic Diseases With Dr. Sony Sherpa – Gilmore Health News

Today, in our Gilmore Health Q&A Series we discuss genetic diseases with Dr. Sony Sherpa as they are a biological, and financial burden. They may only affect a single member of the family physically but can be socially and mentally draining for the rest of the family.

Genetic diseases are a group of diseases that can pass from parents to their children, causing disease with varying degrees of severity. Genetic diseases are relatively common, making up to 14% of all pediatric discharges. Furthermore, they cost upwards of 50 billion dollars yearly, putting a financial strain on the families of affected individuals

Here we talk more about genetic diseases with Dr. Sony Sherpa, to get more insight into these diseases with the aim of understanding them further.

What are genetic diseases? Arent all diseases genetic, technically?

Dr. Sony Sherpa: Well, yes. As researchers learn more about diseases and the different components to them, they have concluded that almost all diseases do have a genetic component to them. However, a genetic disease is a disease that occurs as a result of a change in a persons DNA. This change or mutation can cause disease of varying severity depending on the extent of damage done to the DNA.

So, when you say all diseases have a genetic component, that means all diseases arise from this change in the DNA?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is that most genetic diseases are diseases arising from mutations in one single gene. But most diseases, in general, are what we call multifactorial, or complex disease. Now, these diseases can arise due to environmental factors, genetic factors, occupational hazards, or iatrogenic reasons. Hence, the name; multifactorial. The genetic component of these diseases, albeit a small part, is a very important part in the understanding of these diseases.

Could you perhaps elaborate on this with an example?

Yes, sure. Diseases like sickle cell or Cystic fibrosis are genetic diseases. They arise from a mutation in a single gene and have a clear cut inheritance pattern. On the other hand, there are diseases like diabetes mellitus type 2 or cardiovascular diseases that are polygenic in origin. Not just that, the inheritance pattern of these diseases isnt understood much either. While many studies are looking into it, its going to be a while before we understand the hereditability factors of these complex diseases.

Can complex diseases be passed on from parents to their children? Is it seen usually, or is that one of the many things yet to be discovered?

Complex diseases usually cluster in families, but as I mentioned before, there is no clear explanation for that phenomenon yet.

Alright, then how do single gene-genetic diseases pass on from parents to offsprings?

That we have an understanding of. At least the basics. There are five inheritance patterns of single-gene genetic diseases, namely; Autosomal Dominant, Autosomal Recessive, X-linked Dominant, X-linked Recessive, and mitochondrial. However, the pattern of inheritance differs for each disease.

All single-gene genetic disorders follow one of these five inheritance patterns. Whats the difference between them, in simple terms? What is the basis of separation between these patterns?

Well, it is pretty interesting. Inheritance patterns tell us the origin of the genetic disease, the genotype it has and it can mathematically estimate the percentage risk that a child born to two carriers/patients will have the disease. The genotype of the genetic makeup decides the phenotype or physical appearance of the disease for everyone. The genotype can be realized from alleles that are received from both parents. These alleles can recognize the traits and then classify the inheritance into dominant or recessive. Basically, if a disease requires a mutation to be present on both alleles, then it is recessive. But if it can be pathological with just one mutated allele, then it is dominant.

What about the mitochondrial inheritance pattern then?

Some books and studies still do not accept mitochondrial inheritance patterns to be one of the main inheritance patterns. But regardless of that, it is an important topic. Mitochondria of the cell have their own DNA. And this DNA is passed down from mother to offspring. Its always inherited from the mother. Therefore, any mitochondrial disease would also be purely maternal in origin.

Since these diseases are inherited with alleles on genes and are due to mutation in the DNA, how does one diagnose these diseases? I am assuming it would require a lot of genetic karyotyping and testing? That sounds like a very tedious and complicated process.

Dr. Sony Sherpa: Yes and No. Yes, genetic diseases are very much gene-related as the name suggests, these diseases are diagnosed mostly through genetic testing. OR better yet, the diagnosis is usually suspected through clinical presentation and laboratory testing, it is confirmed through genetic testing.

Genetic testing is not tedious, and a very simple procedure. It can be done in one of three ways; cytogenetic genetic testing wherein the entire chromosome is analyzed and studied, biochemical genetic testing which includes testing the proteins and the biochemical reactions associated with them, and lastly, molecular genetic testing for analysis of small DNA mutation.

You mentioned suspicion of a genetic disease. What araises suspicion of a genetic disease, what are the symptoms that can be alarming?

The suspicion of genetic diseases depends on physical examination, family, and personal history. The red flags for a doctor usually include positive family history, history of miscarriages or stillbirths in the mother of the affected individual, presence of clinical signs characteristic of a genetic syndrome, and so on. If the mother admits to being exposed to teratogens, whether occupational, alcohol, or certain medications, they may also alert the physician towards the presence of a genetic disease or syndrome. Usually, there are mandatory screening tests for certain genetic conditions in most countries.

Basically, a genetic disorder can be the differential diagnosis of many symptoms an individual might present to the hospital with?

Dr. Sony S: Well, yes. Pretty much so.

And how would someone affected by a genetic disease get treated for these conditions? It would seem like they would need a gene treatment plan.

Treatment of genetic diseases obviously depends on each disease and what it entails. For genetic syndromes, the plan is usually to prevent its progress with medications all the while treating the symptoms of the disease. Depending on the symptoms, appropriate therapy may be applied.

Genetic diseases are a life-long process, and they require a very healthy lifestyle and strict adherence to medical therapy and surgical therapy if needed, for a chance to have a good quality of life. The main aim is to increase the quality of life and increase the life expectancy of affected individuals. It mostly is symptomatic therapy of sorts.

Health hacks Google used (and you too can!) – DU Express

Google is widely famous for the perks it gives to its employees. These perks include free and limitless options of restaurants and cafes on its campus. Not just restaurants, Google gives its employees several snacks stations all around its offices. No Google employee is ever more than 150 feet away from some kind of a food station at their office.

This led to a constant increase in the weight of Googles employees. Unhealthy choices of snacks were slowly stacking up, adding around a pound of fat every year. This is a major problem because a few extra pounds are okay, but an unhealthy lifestyle with bad food choices can cost us in the form of diseases like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, etc.

So, what did Google do? Here are some clever and subtle health hacks that Google used, that you can follow, too, to improve your own food habits and health.

All plates in the buffet line for Google employees are smaller. Theyre only eight to ten inches wide, lesser than the usual twelve inches wide plates that were available earlier. This efficiently reduced the portion sizes without any extra effort.

Keeping smaller plates in our own kitchen can effectively monitor our portion sizes too.

The salad bar and vegetables became the first thing in the buffet line as soon as the employees entered. When we are hungry, we tend to eat the food that we see first. This way, employees filled more of their plate with vegetables, and by the time they reached the meat and dessert sections, they didnt have a lot of space left on their plates.

In just a month, the consumption of vegetables by Google employees increased by 2/3rd times than before. And also started selling 2300 breakfast salads in just two years, which were at 0 before.

We can adopt this health hack in our lives by placing our fruits and vegetables on the front racks in our fridge and not hidden away in the bottom drawer! Filling your stomach with vegetables before other food is a nice way to keep a healthy diet.

Google installed chilled Spa Water canisters everywhere around their offices. This water, bubbling with strawberries, lemon and cucumbers, made water consumption an easy and attractive choice.

Sodas and other sugary drinks were move to more distant places. They were not removed, as Google believes that people should be able to make their own choice. They were just kept out of sight and harder to access.

This way, water became the most attractive, accessible and the easiest choice to make for employees. Water consumption drastically increased.

Whenever you feel like drinking a sugary soda, tell yourself to drink a glass of water first. And check, are you still craving that soda?

The coffee machine and the snack station which had stuff like cookies, chips, candy, etc. were only at a mere distance of 6.5 feet. When the Google employees came to get a coffee, they also grabbed a snack along with it.

This distance was now increased. The snack station was kept at a distance of 17 feet from the coffee machine. This increase in 5-6 steps made a huge difference. This health hack reduced snacking by 23% for men and 17% for women.

Often, we dont realize how much we are snacking in between meals, and that too on unhealthy foods. Keeping them farther away from us can be a good option.

Earlier, different chocolates and candy were kept in clear glass candy jars, showcasing those delicious and colourful options of sweets. This meant that even if someone did not think of eating them, theyd be reminded to eat candy because of their clear display.

To stop this, unhealthy snacks like candy were now kept in opaque jars. This might not seem like a trivial difference, but keeping snacks out of sight also reduces the craving for them.

We tend to crave such snacks when theyre lying in plain sight. Several studies have shown that given an attractive prompt to act (seeing a chocolate bar) and convenient access to it (keeping it somewhere close to you), will encourage you to eat more.

For example, youre more likely to eat that bag of Lays if its right at your bedside table, versus if it was hidden away at the back of your kitchen cupboard (or not kept at home at all). Keeping fresh fruits in plain sight can be a better move.

Behavioural studies have shown that more often than not, we take the easier path and make the easier choice in our usual routine.If something is harder to do, youll be resistant to do it. This can be used for better or for worse.

To make a healthy change in your life, you only have to make THE HEALTHY CHOICE= THE EASY CHOICE. Simply put, if you want to do more of something, make it easier to do so; be it food or any other habit. These health hacks are easy to do and make a change.

Google used this exact technique through these health hacks. They made vegetables and fruits and water an easy choice to make. And the unhealthy options were places with resistance, so the employees were unlikely to make that choice.

Subtly rearranging our environment can nudge us into walking the path towards our desired goala healthy lifestyle. Making huge changes to our lifestyle can be hard and challenging. Failure to do so can often discourage us from continuing and we often end up giving up because we set out goals too high. These small health hacks, however small they might seem, can still make drastic changes in our health. They can effectively encourage you to slowly better your life.

Could This Device Help Save Covid-19 Patients Before the ICU? – Houstonia Magazine

ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECTS OF LIFE IN A COVID-19 world is the uncertainty. Not only are we facing an unseen opponent that we barely understand, but none of us know, should we contract the virus, whether well be part of the group that barely registers any symptoms or if well rapidly end up in a drug-induced haze on a ventilator in the ICU. More troubling still, neither do the doctors treating us.

What if there were a way to find out? OncologistDr. Cassian Yee of MD Anderson thinks the key to unlocking this mystery may very well be pumping inside our veins.

For more than 25 years Yee has been studying the use of T-cells, a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes, in his cancer research. They are like soldiers that are trained by the bodys immune system, he says. They go to sites of disease, the battlefield, and coordinate an attack on the enemy, the virus or cancer cell. When their job is completed, they return to the barracks and keep vigilant for any further attacks.

After reading reports that noted lower levels of T-cells in patientswith severe cases ofCovid-19, specificallythose who experiencedrespiratory failure, theoncologist realized thatdeveloping a test to quicklydetermine a patients T-cellcount could go a long waytoward helping medical personnel predict which patients are more prone to experiencing the viruss most deadly symptoms, long before doctors have to get machines to start breathing for them.

Technically this kind of lab test already exists, says Yee; its just not fast or easily available (were talking expensive and bulky equipment and results that take about half a day to process), especially when time is of the essence and equipment is in short supply. So Yee teamed up withKevin McHugh andPeter Lillehoj of Rice University to create a point-of-care device that would allow medical personnel to conduct these tests quickly and cheaply, key factors that could make this item crucial for both Texas Medical Center hospitals and underserved clinics on the front lines of the outbreak.

Using a small amount of blood, the teams point-of-care device will separate the different kinds of blood cells in the sample, count the lymphocytes, and spit out a quantifiable numberideally in about 15 minutes or less. Doctors will then use this number to determine whether a Covid-19 patient is more likely to suffer poor oxygenation. If doctors know beforehand that certain patients have low T-cell numbers and are thus more prone to experiencing the symptoms, including lung deterioration, that have been shown to be fatal in some, they could start more aggressively treating those patients long before they have to be put on ventilators. Its a bit like, Can this patient go home and safely recuperate, or should they stay in the hospital because they might need the ICU? explains McHugh, who specializes in bioengineering.

There are other potential uses for this device as well. While Yee and his team dont expect their point-of-care prototype device to be ready until January 2021 at the earliest, that hasnt stopped them from considering the technologys uses beyond the current coronavirus pandemic.

Wed love to be able to eventually move this into other viral diseases, such as HIV, Yee says. Perhaps even when patients are undergoing some type of treatment for their cancer.
