Pokemon GOs release resulted, for a while that is, in hordes of people milling around certain places, phones in front of their face, on the hunt for digital creatures. Some decried the game as a public nuisance, but many rose in defense of it, highlighting the fact that these individuals were out walking around rather than sitting at home on the sofa. A recent study from Kent State University researchers takes that observation to a new level, crunching the numbers to confirm that Pokemon GO does indeed promote a healthier lifestyle.

It has been a year since Pokemon GO was released and the game is still going strong. Unlike most mobile games, this one forces players not only to stand up and move around, but to actively walk to different locations. Many players report walking long distances throughout a day while on the hunt for Pokemon. To assess how much of an effect the game had on promoting exercise, researchers looked at the activity level of 350 college students.

These students first reported their level of sedentary/active behaviors throughout a week before downloading the Pokemon GO app, then they again reported their numbers after playing the game for a week, then once more after playing the agme for several weeks. In that first week after downloading the game, sedentary behaviors dropped by 25%, with the figure dropping to 18% after several weeks.

After having the game for several weeks, players had an average of 68% greater walking activity compared to before they started playing the game. This was despite the frequency with which they played the game dropping by an average of 58% after several weeks. The study serves to highlight that Pokemon GO and other travel-based games like it can be used to effectively promote physical activity among kids who otherwise may spend too much time sitting.

Robotophile and transhumanist Ana Matronic took to the Inspirefest stage predicting a future where gender doesnt matter when were all cyborgs.

If you couldnt tell, the name Ana Matronic is a sure sign that someone has not just an interest in robots, but an outright fascination and love for them.

That was made clear on stage at Inspirefest 2017 when the Scissor Sisters singer, DJ and author took us back through her life from an obsession with the cult 70s TV show The Bionic Woman and writing her first self-published zine about robots, to dressing as a robot at a burlesque show in San Francisco.

However, the real focus of her talk was the fascinating philosophical questions posed to us in a present and future where the line between human and robot is becoming increasingly blurred.

And if so, what role does gender play if any when our brains are in robots or uploaded to the cloud?

During those days of creating her fanzine in college for The Bionic Woman, played by Jaime Sommers, Matronic went as far as to create her own robot-infused religion, called Bionic Love, based on the philosophies of Joseph Campbell and with Sommers as its muse and messiah.

My religion playfully painted the caring and compassionate Ms Sommers as the union of opposing forces of science and nature, she said. Shes the embodiment of the future and herald of the coming technological age and a reminder to never lose your humanity in the face of it.

It was the work of academic and writer Donna Haraway, however, that roused Matronics real interest in the topic of cyborgs and where the concept fits in with human constructs.

What triggered Matronics many philosophical questions was Haraways surprising revelation that, for her, we dont have to wait to be a cyborg in the future, as we already are cyborgs.

She wrote [a book] confirming my deification of The Bionic Woman and transformed my love of robots into something more, Matronic said.

According to Haraways argument, a cyborg doesnt have to be a half-human, half-machine entity with bionic limbs, but anyone who has had science alter their body in some capacity, such as getting a vaccination.

Quoting Haraway: In the tradition of Western science and politics, the relation between organism and machine has been a border war. The cyborg manifesto is an argument for the pleasure in the confusion of boundaries and the responsibility for their construction and a world without gender and world without end.

It was in reading this that Matronics discovery and interest in the topic of transhumanism began.

An example of transhumanism would be the uploading of a persons consciousness online so that they can continue on, something that is already underway with early brain emulation software.

Unlike things like time travel and inter-dimensional travel, Matronic said, robots are here and theyre real not just as physical robots, but artificial intelligence as well.

Robots confuse the boundaries between life and death, human and machine, male and female, master and servant, thinking and feeling, ability and disability, creation and destruction, she said.

I take pleasure in the confusion of these boundaries and, as an artist, I have a unique platform to share and study these stories; and, as a transhumanist, I take responsibility of this examination and the construction of new boundaries.

So what are these boundaries being broken down and built again in a cyborg future?

For people like Martine Rothblatt working on brain emulation software and as a transgender person robots and robot bodies offer a way to detach ourselves the limitations of anatomy. Or, more simply, personhood is about equity, not equipment.

We have an opportunity in this moment to be prepared for the arrival of mechanical and digital people and I believe it is our responsibility to be prepared, Matronic said.

When robots do occupy space in our society. When robot rights and robo-sexuality is not just spoken about in an episode of Futurama.But when its actually here, humans will be forced to look around and ask how well we have done for the rights of our fellow humans.

She continued: If you dont do that before the robo-demonstrations, we are going to have problems and not just with the robots.

In a sense, Matronic argued, the rise of robots offers humans the chance to reboot our operating system in every sense.

It certainly seems as if we are moving into a brave new world.

Converging on cancer at the nanoscale – The MIT Tech

This summer, the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT marks the first anniversary of the launch of the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine, established through a generous gift from Kathy and Curt Marble 63.

Bringing together leading Koch Institute faculty members and their teams, the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine focuses on grand challenges in cancer detection, treatment, and monitoring that can benefit from the emerging biology and physics of the nanoscale.

These challenges include detecting cancer earlier than existing methods allow, harnessing the immune system to fight cancer even as it evolves, using therapeutic insights from cancer biology to design therapies for previously undruggable targets, combining existing drugs for synergistic action, and creating tools for more accurate diagnosis and better surgical intervention.

Koch Institute member Sangeeta N. Bhatia, the John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, serves as the inaugural director for the center.

A major goal for research at the Marble Center is to leverage the collaborative culture at the Koch Institute to use nanotechnology to improve cancer diagnosis and care in patients around the world, Bhatia says.

Transforming nanomedicine

The Marble Center joins MITs broader efforts at the forefront of discovery and innovation to solve the urgent global challenge that is cancer. The concept of convergence the blending of the life and physical sciences with engineering is a hallmark of MIT, the founding principle of the Koch Institute, and at the heart of the Marble Centers mission.

The center galvanizes the MIT cancer research community in efforts to use nanomedicine as a translational platform for cancer care, says Tyler Jacks, director of the Koch Institute and a David H. Koch Professor of Biology. Its transformative by applying these emerging technologies to push the boundaries of cancer detection, treatment, and monitoring and translational by promoting their development and application in the clinic.

The centers faculty six prominent MIT professors and Koch Institute members are committed to fighting cancer with nanomedicine through research, education, and collaboration. They are:

Sangeeta Bhatia (director), the John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science;

The Marble Center has wasted no time getting up to speed in its first year, and has provided support for innovative research projects including theranostic nanoparticles that can both detect and treat cancers, real-time imaging of interactions between cancer and immune cells to better understand response to cancer immunotherapies, and delivery technologies for several powerful RNA-based therapeutics able to engage specific cancer targets with precision.

As part of its efforts to help foster a multifaceted science and engineering research force, the center has provided fellowship support for trainees as well as valuable opportunities for mentorship, scientific exchange, and professional development.

Promotingbroader engagement, the Marble Center serves as a bridge to a wide network of nanomedicine resources, connecting its members to MIT.nano, other nanotechnology researchers, and clinical collaborators across Boston and beyond. Semiconductor-laced bunny eyedrops appear to nuke infections – The Register

In early lab experiments on rabbits, eyedrops laced with nanoparticles appear to combat bacterial keratitis, a serious infection of the cornea which can, in severe cases, cause blindness.

Researchers hope that these nanoparticles could someday offer a non-toxic alternative to antibiotics, which have the undesirable side effect of creating resistant bacteria.

A common treatment option is steroids, but they can cause scarring. Boffins have found that some nanomaterials, such as copper oxide and silicon, appear to damage bacterial cells. Lately, some groups have realised that carbon quantum dots really tiny semiconductors seem to offer similar benefits with low toxicity, the ability to disperse in water easily, and a relatively simple fabrication process.

"We think it should be safe," Han-Jia Lin, a biochemist at National Taiwan Ocean University in Keelung, told The Register. He and his team had previously studied quantum dots for wound healing in rats.

In the new study, Lin and his team created carbon quantum dots approximately six nanometers in diameter by heating spermidine at around 200oC for about three hours and placing the resultant dots in liquid. The ratio was about 0.4 per cent quantum dot to liquid.

The team infected rabbits with bacterial keratitis. Some received 4 per cent SMX antibiotics, some the quantum-filled eye drops, and others no treatment for control. The researchers found that the quantum dot eyedrop solution showed therapeutic effects right away, even after the first day. The dots were small enough to sneak into the cornea and destroy the bacterial cells.

This had something to do with the quantum dots' compatibility with the cells as well as how they destabilised the cell membranes. The researchers don't know exactly why they work.

By two weeks, the rabbits' eyes were mostly better the quantum dot eyedrop worked about as well as antibiotics. Lin says the treated rabbits showed no side effects from treatment.

A paper describing the research appeared this week in ACS Nano.

It's a "conceptually and technically quite elegant study with remarkable results" but "still with a couple of open questions and obvious risks before this could lead to any product that could help patients," Claus-Michael Lehr, a nanomedicine researcher at Saarland University in Saarbrcken, Germany, told The Reg.

First, he said the reasons why the nanomedicine has such strong bactericidal effects is "not easily explained". Second, the effect of opening tight junction tissue barriers (a potential risk in itself) needs to be shown to be reversible. Third, what chemical products are formed by the quantum dots are they toxic or carcinogenic?

Finally, he said it was wasn't clear how quantum dots that penetrate tissue would behave in the long term. "These structures are probably not biodegradable," he said, "and if they were, what metabolites are being formed?"

Lin says the next steps are to test the long-term effects of the quantum dots, but the the team is trying to be careful in their research to try to limit how they accumulate in bodies. Here, for example, they tested them on the eye.

Because the carbon quantum dots work on such a sensitive part of the body such as the eye without apparently harming cells, "This has potential," Lin said.

Nanoparticle delivery tech targets rare lung disease – In-PharmaTechnologist.com

Researchers at London, UK-based Imperial College are developing a technology to transport drugs directly to the lungs of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients.

The technology consists of ethanol-heated iron and trans-trans muconic acid nanoparticles that can be small molecule drug actives.

These particles can be delivered directly to the site of the disease according to lead researcher Jane Mitchell, who told us the targeted approach bypasses the toxicity issues that have held back development of less targeted, systemic nanomedicines.

One of the biggest limitations in nanomedicine is toxicity, some of the best nanomedicine structures do not make it past the initial stages of development, as they kill cells, said Mitchell.

However in a study published in Pulmonary Circulation , researchers explain that these metallic structures - called metal organic frameworks (MOF) are not harmful to cells.

We made these prototype MOFs, and have shown they were not toxic to a whole range of human lung cells, Mitchell told us.

The hope is that using this approach will ultimately allow for high concentrations of drugs we already have, to be delivered to only the vessels in the lung, and reduce side effects, she said.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)

PAH is a rare lung disease caused by changes to the smaller branches of the pulmonary arteries. The artery walls thicken, and eventually cause organ failure.

While no cure exists, treatments that open up blood vessels in the artery wall are available. According to Mitchell, these treatments can produce negative side effects.

The drugs available [for PAH]are all small molecule drugs which are seriously limited by systemic side effects. Therefore delivering these drugs to the site of disease in our metal organic frame-work (MOF) carrier would represent a paradigm step forward in technology to treat this disease, she said.

Further, researchers believe the MOF technology has therapeutic benefits of its own.

We know that the carriers can havetherapeutic benefits intheir own right such as reducing inflammation and, in the case of ourformation, the potential for imaging, said Mitchell.

For patients with PAH, it could mean we are able to turn it from a fatal condition, to a chronic manageable one, she said.

According to Mitchell, the technology is not expensive at the experimental level, and would be scaled up at commercial level.

We now need to perform proof of concept studies using carriers containing drugs in cell and animal based models. With funding, this will be complete within 2 years, she Mitchell.

Upon completion of clinical trials, the University hopes to license out the technology.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old male. I receive testosterone injections (in the butt) from my provider every three weeks, and have been receiving these injections for roughly five years. My provider reviews my bloodwork every six months before he writes a prescription renewal for testosterone, which I then take to his office for safekeeping and the regular injections. My latest bloodwork indicates that my testosterone serum is low at 310, and free testosterone is low at 4.9. After five years of injections, I continue to have low T; it does not seem to be improving. At my most recent visit, the doctor increased the injection dosage from 2 ml to 3 ml. I am concerned because of the heart, prostate and other risk factors I read about. Any advice or cause for concern? M.M.

ANSWER: Testosterone treatment is indicated for men with symptoms of low testosterone levels and confirmed by blood testing. It is not a tonic to be used without due consideration.

There has long been concern about adverse effects of testosterone, especially to the prostate and to the heart. Most prostate cancer is testosterone-sensitive, and removing testosterone was one of the oldest treatments for prostate cancer. However, restoring normal levels of testosterone in a man with low levels is now considered to have low potential for increasing prostate cancer. It has not been definitively proven to be safe, but the many studies that have been done have been reassuring. Authorities recommend more-aggressive prostate cancer screening for men on testosterone treatment.

Athletes using extremely high doses of testosterone (many times greater than the doses you are taking) are at risk for heart attack and stroke. However, these data cannot be used to consider the risk in men who are prescribed testosterone with a low level, where the goal is to get to normal. Testosterone treatment reduces several key risk factors, including cholesterol. Most of the well-done studies show little if any risk from testosterone treatment; some have shown some benefit.

Since the dose you were getting wasnt bringing your blood level up, I think increasing it is appropriate. The usual goal is a blood level of 500-600, but that may not be appropriate for everybody.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am perplexed about use of estrogen ointment. My doctor has prescribed Premarin ointment to be used vaginally for relief of painful intercourse. It is effective, but I am very concerned about side effects. She has assured me that the amount that is used (twice a week) is minimal and does not put users at risk for the side effects of oral estrogen tablets. I do have family history of blood clots and uterine cancer, and I suffer from aura migraines. I am 65 years old and in good general health. I never considered the use of hormones for menopausal symptoms, and although I am using the ointment at present, I still am very hesitant. A.M.H.

ANSWER: Because estrogen is poorly absorbed when used topically, the concerns about side effects are greatly reduced. Estrogen blood levels are very nearly the same in women on vaginal estrogen compared with women who do not use estrogen at all. While I would never prescribe vaginal estrogen to a woman with a history of breast cancer without discussing it with her oncologist, I think that the systemic risks of estrogen are very small with the vaginal preparations.

On Monday, July 3, 2017 at approximately 8:26 PM, a robbery and homicide occurred at the corner of Hillcrest Avenue and E. 18th Street. An officer involved shooting by an Antioch Police Department patrol officer occurred at the scene of the robbery and homicide. The homicide was not a result of the officer involved shooting. The Antioch Police Department and the Contra Costa County Office of the District Attorney are currently investigating the incident. The investigation is in its early stages and no further information will be released, at this time.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Natures God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Employee wellness: More employers taking holistic approach to wellness – Tulsa World

Corporate employee wellness programs are now going beyond free flu shots and discounted passes to a local gym.

Locally, businesses are incorporating more efforts to address Oklahomas high rates of obesity and chronic weight-related conditions.

To receive the designation, companies have to show documentation of policies, procedures and programs available to their employees to support a healthy lifestyle. As of February, more than 750 businesses statewide have Certified Healthy status.

Although some components, such as a smoke-free workplace policy, are standard for Certified Healthy businesses, Julie Dearing with the Center for the Advancement of Wellness has noticed an emerging trend that brings in an unexpected ally: the office vending machine.

While representing the Certified Healthy program at a conference, Dearing was approached by a representative of a vending machine company who had multiple Oklahoma-based clients shift their offices offerings toward nuts, sunflower seeds and other healthier pre-packaged options.

That weve got companies giving that push to vending machine vendors and then have the distributor come up and talk to me about it is something, she said. If the demands not there for healthier items, theyre not going to supply them.

Dearing said she has also noticed more businesses start subsidizing personal fitness trackers and encouraging step count contests to get their employees moving more during the day.

With an estimated 20 percent of American adults experiencing depression or other mental health issues, more employers nationally are starting to take a holistic approach.

The National Business Group on Health is a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of large companies on national health policy issues and works with those companies to manage and improve health care for their employees.

LuAnn Heinen, the organizations vice president for workforce well-being, productivity and human capital, primarily works with larger companies and has noticed an uptick in organizations attempting to address mental health.

To bring stress levels down, meditation and mindfulness training via mobile apps are gaining popularity, she said.

Additionally, more companies are taking steps to help employees access counselors at work.

What were seeing is that some companies are bringing their counseling services on site and having them set up shop in the clinic, she said. You go in through the same door, and no one knows if youre there for mental health services or a flu shot.

Several employers are also expanding their wellness programs to address issues that can lead to stress and reduced efficiency at work, including financial problems.

If you cant pay your bills, its going to take up so much mind space, making it hard to be productive, she said. Its potentially a big distraction.Nationally, about 30 percent of companies offered subsidies or discounts for pedometers or other fitness wearables in 2016.

Weve got companies that are being creating and using whats out there in terms of technology to demonstrate that OK, Im going to invest this extra $150 in you, but you need to show me that youre keeping your step goals up, she said. And employees are doing it because they see the value its reciprocal.

Eating something before you go or having a bit of water is key, so you're more full before you get there. Then you're more in control when it comes to making choice. If you show up hungry and then everything looks so good, its hard to say no and its easy to get carried away. Also visualizing your success ahead of time, and what its going to look like as in what you want to do, so visualize yourself saying no thank you to unhealthy choices."

Another strategy is to bring something healthy with you, like a veggie tray or fruit salad and that way you are sure to have a good choice in front of you.

Brent says, "Bring something along with you. We have a ton of amazing recipes on Pinterest and our website that you can take to these different parties and events and nobody's going to know that it's super healthy for you, they taste that good."

Finally above all else Brent says focus on hydrating before the BBQ, for a couple of reasons. "Water water water, I preach a lot about water intake, especially if you are going to be drinking. Drinking alcohol can dehydrate you so you need at least double your ounces of water for the alcohol consumption to rehydrate the body and stay hydrated."

And if you do fall off the wagon dont let it get you down and derail your efforts. Get right back on track the next day.

Being an American, the first thing I worried about when my doctor said I needed to be on TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) for the rest of my life was: How is this going to affect my health insurance costs?

I do have health insurance, but they wont cover testosterone injections unless the doctor gives them to me. Sound familiar? Since I cant afford to take time off work every week to visit my doctors office, Im stuck taking either Testim or Androgel or getting my testosterone by other means.

If I had to do it over again, as I said, Id just contact a mail order compounding pharmacy, get some independent lab tests done, and have a phone consultation with one of their doctors. At least then I wouldnt have a pre-existing condition on my medical records.

The Nuts and Bolts of DIY Testosterone Injections If you think you might need TRT and havent been officially diagnosed as hypogonadal by a doctor yet there is an option that doesnt involve the record-hungry healthcare system: Get the test done privately and pay in cash. You dont need a doctor to read the test results. If youre testosterone is low, contact a compounding pharmacy or hormone replacement / anti-aging clinic that doesnt take health insurance. The HRT or Anti-Aging clinic, on the other hand, might have some legal questions to answer should the DA or DEA ever decide to pay them a visit, which has happened in the past.

But whatever your feelings about this time of life, this is what you should know before it arrives:

8 YEARS IN A LEAKY BOAT

Menopause lasts significantly longer than we used to believe. Christchurch obstetrician-gynaecologist Olivia Smartsays women go through eight years of hormonal fluctuationsuntil menstruation ends when they are 51, on average.

Ask your mother when she experienced menopause, because chances are you will have a similar experience.

And if your mum was aged 40 or younger when her periods stopped,you should talk to your GP about your own fertility, and how you can protect your bone and hearthealth if you also hit menopause early.

CHEER UP, LADY, IT'S NOT SO BAD

The general perception is that menopause is a miserable experience you would not wish on anyone, and let's be clear it's no pony ride.

"It's a very real issue for women in their 40s," says Smart."A lot have to hold down a job and manage young families but there is this huge change looming which might effect their quality of life.

"It could be a crippling blow from a mental health perspective or on a cognitive level. The only comfort is that there are very good treatments available."

Some of those treatments are hormonal (we will get to HRT momentarily) and some are not, but the good news is that innovation is improving the quality of life for menopausal women every year.

HRT IS NOT EVIL

The perception of hormone replacement treatment has changed wildly over time. Once treated as a near-miraculous way of extending youth and treating the symptoms of menopause, it got a lot of bad publicity in the early 2000s when research linked it to breast cancer and heart disease.

"Using HRT for a short period of time [five years or less] is a safe thing to do," says Smart. "The safety data is pretty reassuring around that. It's about seeing a practitioner who is experienced and has the up-to-date information.

HEAVY GOING

It's true that a lot of women gain weight at menopause and that their body shape changes, with a thickening of the waist and extra pockets of fat collecting around their hips and bums.

Smart advises women still in their 30s to maintain a healthy weight, eat foods rich in calcium, do weight-reistance exercises, and do exercises that promote cardiovascular health.

The better the shape you are in approaching menopause, the better you will be able to cope with it.

IS IT JUST ME, OR IS IT HOT IN HERE?

Hot flushes are the gift that keeps on giving, sometimes for several years. Most people know that hot flushes are a sudden temperature rise, signalled by red, sometimes blotchy skin.

However, these symptoms may be accompaniedby heart palpitations,dizziness and a general sense of unwellness.

If hot flashes are a significant issue for you and you don't want to take hormones, it is possible to inject the neck in a procedure called a stellate ganglion block, says Smart. This can reduce the number and severity of hot flushes a woman experiences

NOT QUITE THE SAHARA... BUT...

One of the lesser-known downsides to menopause is vaginal dryness, which is uncomfortable and can make sex painful.The traditional treatment is flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil and lube.

A low-dose topical oestrogen cream can help, but for women who want to avoid the fuss and the hormones, alaser treatment is available which increases collagen production at the site.

SO WHAT'S PERIMENOPAUSE?

Whilemenopause is the end of menstruation,perimenopauseis the phase before it. But for conveniencesake we tend to refer to the whole transition as menopause.

"Over the age of 45, irregular bleeding should be checked out by your doctor," says Smart."Endometrial cancers are one of the most common cancers in women, and we are picking them up in women in their 30s and 40s."

THE NEVERENDING PERIOD

In some cases, women have really long periods that go one for a month or more. "If your body fails to release an egg and then the body is not getting signals that it needs to stop the cycle and start again, then you get this continuous bleeding for weeks on end," says Smart.

There is medication available to stop the bleeding, so don't suffer in silence. Ask your GP for help.
