Choosing Wisely: Aytu BioScience vs. Lipocine – GuruFocus.com – GuruFocus.com

Both Aytu BioScience (AYTUD) and Lipocine Inc. (NASDAQ:LPCN) are advancing novel testosterone replacement therapies, but when placed side by side, which stock may make investors pumped for joy?

The testosterone replacement therapy market is a hot sector with companies focused on grabbing as much of the estimated $2 billion market as they can. Two emerging companies, in particular, are focused on delivering shareholders both near- and long-term value propositions by advancing their unique TRT products, one of which has recently hit the market. While several large pharmaceuticals are well entrenched in the TRT market already, their products, like AbbVie's (NYSE:ABBV) AndroGel, Eli Lilly's (NYSE:LLY) Axiron and Endo International's (NASDAQ:ENDP) Fortesta, are plagued with the most severe of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings the dreaded Black Box warning. Thus, with the market opportunity open to treatments that may provide a better solution without the known risks of currently marketed TRT products, let's place two peer competitors side by side to determine the chances of either taking a bite out of the current market potential.

Is Aytu BioScience the 'wise choice?'

Although Aytu BioScience experienced a tough month in August, likely attributable to the recent capital raise, the company has never been stronger from a clinical and marketing perspective. Now that the split is old news and with shares trading above $3.70, the distractions of the past month may soon get replaced with investor optimism about the company's lead TRT product, Natesto.

Natesto has the potential to become a game changer in the TRT market. Although Aytu is marketing with a much smaller budget than those with already approved therapies on the market, at some point investors believe that wisdom will soon replace big pharma muscle, making Natesto the TRT of choice for prescribing physicians. And, when looking at published clinical data, the case for a market-leading Natesto should not be cast off as pure fodder. In fact, when comparing Natesto to Lipocine's pipeline TRT, Tlando, as well as to a host of other big-name drugs, Natesto has demonstrated statistically better efficacy and appears to be a safer and more effective treatment than most TRT products currently on the market.

Keeping the focus only on both companies' TRT products, other promising Aytu pipeline products won't get considered. Investors should not discount the value inherent to the Aytu pipeline consisting of a male infertility product MiOXSYS and a female sexual wellness product Fiera that like Natesto may offer significant and compelling market advantages. OK, so what about Natesto's bid to be best in class?

First off, Natesto is the only nasally administered TRT on the market. And, while some investors may not understand the significance of that issue, users of the product will. Being nasally administered helps to alleviate inadvertent transfer of testosterone, provides consistent and efficient dosing and offers significant convenience over topically applied products. Because of these advantages, Natesto is the only currently marketed FDA-approved topical TRT product not labeled with the severe FDA-required Black Box warning. Those safety and convenience issues are just the tip of the iceberg in the advantages column; there is more to Natesto to justify its place in the $2 billion TRT market.

It's no accident that Natesto has been called the potential best-in-class therapy on the market. Coming off its recent spike of over 300% in new prescription volume, Natesto is grabbing the attention of physicians due to the proven effectiveness of the product, which also leaves behind the severe side effects for patients. The differentiating factors are apparent; Natesto reduces or eliminates the potential for accidental transfer and does not require a man taking the product to quarantine himself from a female or child while the product is applied.

Additionally, being a hands-free application, Natesto offers consistent dosing in a measured treatment, and that's an important issue since excessive intake of testosterone is not necessarily a good thing for patients. Of perhaps greater importance, though, is that Natesto does not significantly reduce levels of LH and FSH hormones in the body, which has caused side effects in patients (including reducing sperm count and decreasing testicle size) who use products like AndroGel, Axiron, Fortesta and injectable products. Not only does Natesto maintain proper hormone levels in patients, but it also eliminates the potential for users getting hooked on testosterone treatments to maintain healthy testosterone levels. Natesto excels in other areas of concern as well, demonstrating a better safety profile over long-acting gels and injections that have been shown to increase hematocrit concentrations in the patient. That is, the treatments make the patient's blood thicker, which may lead to stroke and cardiac-related complications in patients. From a safety perspective, Natesto is best in class, but what about the efficacy?

The safety profile is significant, but it's how Natesto performs that is the real story. Marketed as "testosterone in seconds," Natesto is now the first and only FDA-approved intranasal TRT on the market. In a clinical trial, the majority of patients achieved statistically significant improvement in each of the five domains of erectile function. In most cases, the effect on normalizing erectile function occurred within the first 30 days of treatment. In addition to the benefits mentioned, 70% of men in the Natesto pivotal trial said they would switch from their current TRT to treatment with Natesto. Thus, no surprise that Natesto has seen a sharp trend higher in new prescription rates, with new authorizations for the product doubling since May. Also, 90% of men taking Natesto get their testosterone levels back to "normal," which is higher than other TRTs. And most men taking Natesto see their moods improve as soon as 30 days from starting treatment. The market is estimated to stand at approximately $2 billion currently, and if Aytu maintains the current trend, even a 10% market penetration can return over $200 million in new revenues.

Now that Aytu has roughly only 4 million shares outstanding, a revenue spike of that magnitude would most likely cause a disproportionate rise in company market cap, which currently reflects anemic value considering this potentially game-changing product. Adding in the potential of Aytu's other marketed products, the company may be a very wise choice for investors seeking long-term value and probability for share price appreciation.

Is Lipocine the 'wise choice?'

Lipocince is developing a testosterone product called Tlando. Although the product is not yet on the market, Lipocine is the closest peer to Aytu from a market perspective. Lipocine is taking a different approach for Tlando, testing an orally administered dose of testosterone, which the company plans to submit to the FDA for approval in the coming months. Investors need to know that the FDA has already denied the application for Tlando once, but Lipocine is preparing to try for approval once again, relying on similar data from the original rejected application.

A potential drawback for the oral administration of Tlando is that patients will be required to keep a consistent diet, maintaining certain fat content and calorie intake. And this is the case for each dosing. If patients fail to adhere to specific dietary requirements, patients are unlikely to see a meaningful rise in testosterone levels, which would be a huge problem and a potential marketing nightmare for the product. A significantly more adverse scenario is that during the company's FDA studies, a handful of men reached testosterone levels of over 2500 ng/dl, which is both extremely high and dangerous.

In addition to potential FDA problems looming for Tlando, the company itself said in a press release that LPCN 1021 (Tlando) only "generally met" the prespecified per dose secondary endpoints for twice daily oral administration. In layman's terms, the product either meets the endpoint or it doesn't, and when the company itself publishes mixed messages, investors should pay close attention. Also important to note is that the FDA will be highly unappeased if men being treated by Tlando exceed the 2500 ng/dl level, making the chances for approval unlikely. And to add insult to potential misery, as far as the FDA is concerned, when endpoints are "generally met," product support is unlikely. The FDA's words, not mine.

The biggest issue for Tlando compared to Natesto, though, is that when placed side by side, Tlando does not get as many men to normal testosterone levels. Company-sponsored studies demonstrate a significant edge in benefit from Natesto with 90% of males reaching normal testosterone levels, compared to just 70% of patients reaching normal testosterone levels when using Tlando. The FDA has made it known that at least 75% of men taking the testosterone product must reach normal T levels so it is difficult to understand how the FDA would even approve Tlando. Additionally, with Tlando known to produce dangerously high testosterone concentrations in some men, the road to approval may be far tougher than even the most optimistic investor may be willing to admit.

The 'wisest choice?'

Comparing the two, Aytu emerges as a clear "wise choice" for investors wanting exposure to the multibillion-dollar TRT market. Interestingly, Lipocine has a current market cap of roughly $75 million compared to Aytu's approximately $15 million market cap. From both a product and valuation standpoint, the opportunity for growth is substantial in the Aytu BioScience camp, particularly when you consider that there is no regulatory risk for Aytu. The product is already on the market and growing rapidly. Although a slim chance exists for approval for Tlando, the product would most likely be met with considerable marketing difficulties. Conversely, with Aytu's Natesto already approved and marketed, the promise again lay squarely in the Aytu potential.

Now that the TRT comparisons are noted, it's fair to factor in both Aytu's and Lipocine's additional pipeline opportunities. While a slight opportunity may have existed for Lipocine to present itself in a better light, the company is yet to produce an impressive clinical statistic. Thus, the clear advantages still weigh heavily in Aytu's favor, solidifying its position as the better of the two. With a pipeline focused on making use of a combined market opportunity of more than $11 million in the bank following its recent capital raise, in this case, Aytu BioScience is the superior choice for investors looking to "choose wisely."

Biotech’s shares plummet as US deal ends | SBS News – SBS

Shares in biotech Acrux have plummeted after Acrux and US-based pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co agreed to end their licensing deal for Axiron, a testosterone replacement therapy for men.

Axiron was the first testosterone replacement product that could be applied like a roll-on deodorant on the armpit of a patient.

Melbourne-based Acrux secured a licensing deal with Eli Lilly in 2010, which Acrux described at the time as one of the largest, if not the largest, licensing deals undertaken by an Australian biotech company.

Under the deal, Acrux could receive up to $US335 million plus royalties from Eli Lilly in return for exclusive rights to commercialise Axiron.

"Termination of the license in the US is effective immediately and termination of license outside the US will be effective 90 days thereafter," Acrux said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Global rights to the product will revert to Acrux."

Shares in Acrux dropped 7.5 cents, or 28 per cent, to 19 cents, reducing the company's market value by $12.5 million.

Acrux said generic treatments for testosterone deficiency were creating commercial uncertainty, and the testosterone market was declining.

The costs of a clinical trial required by the US Food and Drug Administration to determine whether an increased risk of heart attack or stroke exists among users of testosterone were also uncertain, the company said.

Acrux is also appealing a US court decision that held that patents for the Axiron formulation were invalid.

Generic versions of Axiron were launched in the US by pharmaceutical firms Perrigo and Teva in July and August.

Eli Lilly and Prasco also launched an authorised generic version of Axiron, from which Acrux received royalties on sales.

Acrux said it is committed to asserting its intellectual property rights for Axiron and the court appeal on the patents issue will continue.

Eli Lilly's global sales in the year to June 30 of $US143 million was down from $US149.3 million in the prior year.

Acrux's royalty revenue from Axiron fell 10 per cent to $A22.8 million in 2016/17, refelecting the decline in global sales.

FIT&FAB: I’m 30kg lighter but my healthy lifestyle pursuit just begun – Daily Nation

By MARION MAINAMore by this Author

At only 22, my weight was oscillating between 100kg and 108 kg. How did I let it get that far? Why didnt anyone do or say something? Do something?

Ironically, I was underweight at birth. As a toddler, I was almost scrawny. My mother would get very cross with me for refusing to eat. When I agreed to eat, it would be ridiculous combos like boiled rice and black tea (strungi).

Evidently, I was not born with a weight problem. I acquired it, just like any other lifestyle disease. I had a frank conversation with my mother after I went public on my weight loss journey. She disclosed how happy she had been to notice a surge in my appetite for snacks after I joined kindergarten. I was placed on a feeding program that she and I now agree was not the healthiest option at the time. Thats when my obesity began.

October 4,2017 will mark exactly two years since I made the decision of my life. I decided to take charge of my health which was slowly going down the drain. Like the trickle of a punctured pipe, unnoticeably seeping out little droplets of water. Then one day the water bill arrives, rocking a digit that is triple your salary!

You see, until that fateful day on October 4,2015, life had been a breeze. Or so I let myself believe. Surrounded by very loving family and friends, I buried my head in the sand much like the proverbial ostrich, totally oblivious to the eminent danger that was staring back at me every time I looked into a mirror.

DIFFICULT WEIGHTLOSS JOURNEY

The past two years have not been easy. Between sweat, tears, bitter-tasting smoothies and being constantly misunderstood, I have been able to bring my weight down to the range of 67kgs-70kgs.

The sweat was from rigorous exercises on YouTube, jogging and occasional gym sessions. Tears were plenty in the first year, I wanted to give up so badly! Both the sweat and tears have hence ceased considerably. I am doing less strenuous workouts and the tears are not for weight loss anymore.

Being misunderstood, however, is still ongoing and usually sounds like this:

So why are you not eating cake, si you slimmed?

Why are you so complicated? Sasa, what do you eat?

You are still eating your ma-things? That is slavery!

Over the past 11 months, I have learnt not to explain myself every single time. Im in pursuit for a healthy body as a way of life. Recently, I adopted the Low-Carb High Fat diet. In just two months, I have dropped a few inches off and attained an amazing skin glow. I'm a living proof that food is medicine. And bad food as is with medicine, is poisonous, fatal.

We will embark on the journey of weight loss together. My joys, my sorrows, my exercise hacks, my recipes may just lighten the journey for the next obesity conqueror.

Fit&Fab is a new blog series by Marion Maina where she shares her pursuit of a healthy body as a way of life. Do you have feedback on this story? E-mail: [emailprotected]

Run into a healthier lifestyle with the help of CSUF resources – The Daily Titan

After a long day of jotting down notes during class, suffering through customers at work and dealing with the other random absurdities of life, the last thing anyone wants to do is eat a salad or run a few miles.

However, students need to put time aside to better their habits if they want to live healthier, less sedentary lives, and theres no better time to start than now.

There is a reason the freshman 15 exists, and its all too easy to fall into an unhealthy lifestyle especially with the stress of school and work.

But thankfully, CSUF has great resources available for anyone willing to drop that package of Takis and pick up some carrot sticks instead.

College students are challenged with the skill that are required to balance life and to make an active lifestyle a priority, said CSUF public health and health education professor Laura Chandler.

According to the American College Health Association in the California State University Fullerton Executive Summary of spring 2016, only 2.9 percent of students reported that they ate five or more servings of vegetables per day.

In terms of exercise, the numbers werent any better.

The report stated that only 13 percent of students have done at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 5-7 days out of the week.

When students do make efforts to improve their eating or exercise habits, they often get reeled in by fads and trends that arent based on science. Victims of a gluten-free, Atkins or low-fat diet serve as prime examples.

Rather than falling prey to the latest trends, students should make an effort to take control of their eating and exercise habits now to make for a healthier long-term solution.

With the many resources available on campus, its not as hard as it seems to start a healthy lifestyle right now.

Not only do students get a free membership to the Student Recreation Center, but there are exercise classes offered by the kinesiology department.

I strongly recommend every student to sign up for a one unit activity class, Chandler said. It breaks up your day. It will keep you active. You have to go. It keeps you motivated.

Students with gym anxiety may beg to differ and may not be eager to work out in front of others in a class or while at the gym.

There are so many fun different types of activities that you dont have to be an athlete to get involved with, Chandler said. Find something that works for you even if its pingpong or frisbee or volleyball or tennis or walking.

Students who attended Discoverfest last week might have noticed all the different activity clubs there are on campus, which are most likely still accepting new members. Unlike going to the gym alone or attending a class, this route allows just as much exercising as socializing, giving students a support group of people who have fun together by being active.

For those who prefer to be active outside rather than in a gym, the Fullerton Arboretum provides a nice little nature walk and yoga classes.

Dont worry about missing out on opportunities like Discoverfest, FOODucation workshops are available weekly around Fullerton and students can sign up online.

College students health wont improve by continuing to live sedentary lifestyles filled with poor eating choices. Taking advantage of the many opportunities offered on campus can steadily improve eating and exercise habits.

It wont be easy and at times it might not be the most fun option, but learning to live an active lifestyle can prevent students from permanently becoming part of the couch they sit on all day.

Blood clot risk — and other problems — might be tied to how tall you are – CNN

Story highlights

That blood clot risk was lowest among the shortest women and men and appeared to increase with height, the research showed.

"However, the height in the population has increased, and continues increasing, which could be contributing to the fact that the incidence of thrombosis has increased," he said. "I think we should start to include height in risk assessment just as overweight, although formal studies are needed to determine exactly how height interacts with inherited blood disorders and other conditions."

'Body size in general is an important factor'

Among men, an association with height was found for risk of blood clots in the lungs, called pulmonary embolism, as well as in the legs and other locations. Among women, only the risk of blood clots in the legs was significantly associated with height.

"If the clot is big enough, that can cause death, which is sometimes sudden," she said.

The researchers also found that the strong association between blood clot risk and height remained among the siblings.

"Overall, it is a solid study with good research methodology used," Okeke-Igbokwe said.

"The bottom line regarding this recent study, whether you are a taller or shorter individual, you must be aware of all the additional lifestyle factors that may increase your risk for blood clots, such as smoking or a sedentary lifestyle," she said. "We have no control over our height, but we certainly can all take the appropriate measures in making healthy lifestyle choices to reduce the risk of various conditions."

One limitation of the study was that the researchers did not have information on the participants' childhoods, home environments and diets. However, they used educational level as a measure of lifestyle factors.

"Basically, the blood has to travel up a vein against gravity, and when there is a longer distance to travel, there is more opportunity for the blood to clot abnormally," she said. "This is not the case in the arms, for example, where arm movement allows blood to more easily flow out of the limb with the help of gravity."

When it comes to the new study, the "robust" design could be replicated to determine whether height correlates with other health problems, said Ulhas Naik, professor of medicine and director of the Cardeza Center for Vascular Biology Research at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, who was not involved in the new study.

"Being tall, there are benefits in some ways in some diseases, (and) there is the opposite in some other diseases," he said. "This kind of a study is a good starting point to now look at other diseases."

Cancer risk goes up with height?

The paper also suggested that certain genetic factors and biological pathways affecting adult height may affect the risk of those cancers.

As with the Plos Medicine study, the researchers behind the 2015 study pointed to certain genetic factors and biological pathways affecting height as having an important role in the development of breast cancer.

Is short stature tied to gestational diabetes risk?

A study of 135,861 pregnancies in women of various races in the US, of whom 5,567 were diagnosed with gestational diabetes, found that taller height was significantly associated with a lower risk of gestational diabetes.

Overall, women in the highest height quartile in that study had more than 60% lower risk of gestational diabetes compared with women in the lowest quartile, even after accounting for maternal age, weight, race, insurance and education, according to the findings.

"In contrast, height was positively associated with death from ruptured aortic aneurysm, pulmonary embolism, melanoma and cancers of the pancreas, endocrine and nervous systems, ovary, breast, prostate, colorectum, blood and lung," the abstract said. That study involved an analysis of 121 prospective studies including about 1 million people.

NYU Langone's Okeke-Igbokwe said that with all of these height-related correlations -- from cancer to heart diseases -- the exact underlying mechanisms still need to be fleshed out.

"Undoubtedly, an increased number of large-scale studies will still be required to really examine the correlation between height and these other medical conditions," she said.

Asheville Wellness Tours offer healthy lifestyle experiences – Mountain Xpress

When Erin Reillywanted to make her best friends bachelorette trip to Asheville a perfectexperience, she looked for a unique way to tour the city. Asheville Wellness Toursofferedthe bestway to experience the holistic side of Asheville, mixed with history and local shopping, she says.

I thought it would be a great way to explore downtown Asheville and experience different wellness techniques and most of all relax with a group of friends, says Reilly. This tour is different from other Asheville tours because you get a hands-on experience while exploring what makes Asheville so unique its history dedicated to wellness and personal care. Instead of just going on a bus tour that takes you around town, we were able to actually taste honey, smell essential oils and listen to music.

As wellness travel specialists for the Asheville area, local yoga instructorKim Dryeand tour guideNicole Will help tourists navigatethe wellness experiences Asheville has to offer. Drye created Asheville Wellness Tours afterfriends and acquaintances asked for her recommendations of yoga classes, herb store, massage, acupuncture, accommodations and breweries. Will providedthe expertise of nearly 20 years in thetourism industry a quarter of themcrafting yoga retreats in Ecuador.

Drye and Will offer a curated experience of bachelorette weekends, special events in town or two-hour walking tours that highlight Asheville businesses promoting wellness.

The town of Asheville started growing during the age of tuberculosis, when visitors would come for the clean mountain air, temperate climate and healthy lifestyle, says Will, who offers snippets of history, architectural insightsand interesting stories throughout the walking tour. This wellness aspectremained an element of our community since the growth of Asheville began. For us, its a way to allow visitors to experience our city through that lens.

Wellness tourism as a niche market has been growing, says Will, noting that the experienceof an outdoor mecca or foodiegroupis a fun way to exploreAsheville, especially when a wellness perspective is added.

The Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that, on average, 29,800 people visit Buncombe County each day and spend $5.2 million. The main reason given for an overnight leisure trip is visiting friends and family. The second most frequentreasonis touring, which increased from 22 percent to 25 percent between 2015 and 2016.

Since Drye and Will began the business this past year, 90 percent of Asheville Wellness Tours participants are overnight visitors, withtwo to eight people per tour and two to fourtours per week. The busy season, Drye notes, is primarily April to November.

Thetop-twoactivities on an overnight trip to Asheville, as reported by the bureau, are shopping and landmark or historic site visitation. Asheville Wellness Tours hits the nail on the head.

Thewalking tour merges shopping, touring and viewing historical landmarks, all within two hours. It includes visits tolocal businesses that havean educational wellness component, such as the Herbiary, where staff offer a demonstration and presentation about how to discern the purity and uses of essential oils (and participants to get a sample to take home). At the Bee Charmer, participants heara talk about the benefits of honey, such as using wildflower honey for allergies, and they get a sampling of the different types of honey soldin the store.

Other tour stopsinclude tea sampling at Dobra Tea, juice sampling at Green Sage, organic lotion and soap education at C & Co., and kombucha tasting at the Buchi Bar. Tours end with a short and accessible yoga practice in Pack Square led by the tour guides, whoare also local yoga instructors. Add-on options include a visit to the Asheville Salt Cave, massage or acupuncture with a local practitioner, or sound healing at Skinny Beats.

The goal is to connect visitors to the wellness community we have here. We have been carefully networking for skilled and experienced practitioners to offer their services for those who come to town looking for wellness experiences but not sure where to start, says Drye, who also curates tailored experiences.

We are developing alliances within the community, she explains, noting that the businesses visited on the tours are happy with the arrangement.

Asheville Wellness Tours also offer special events, including Yoga on the Mountain, a combination hiking and yoga adventure, and Sip & Stretch, a yoga class followed by a ginger beer at local brewery Gingers Revenge. We consider the service we offer to be a complement to Ashevilles reputation as a food/beer scene and outdoor playground, says Drye.

Something that happened organically is the bachelorette parties, saysWill. [Participants]are wanting an alternative to the boozy party scene of Vegas. These groups want to do the PubCycle and eat good food, but they want something more. Will and Drye offer a weekend that is customized to the groups interest including group tarot reading, essential oil anointing ceremonies and massages at an Airbnb.

I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in the history of Asheville, but especially to anyone interested in meditation, yoga or any other activity where you focus on the well-being of body and soul, says Reilly. My favorite part of the tour was definitely the honey tasting and our tour guide Nicoles wonderful recommendations for places to eat and visit in the city.

Most participants are wanting to experience downtown or get a glimpse of the city through the wellness perspective, says Drye. We personally have a love for the town deeply rooted in community. We want to spread the concept of wellness in general as an awareness practice and a personal journey. There are many ways to create a sense of well-being in your own life, and these are just some of the ways.

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food ~ Hippocrates

Protein can help you shed those unwanted pounds and keep your belly full. But its important to eat the right amount and the right kind of protein to get its health benefits.

SeafoodSeafood is an excellent source of protein because its usually low in fat. Fish such as salmon is a little higher in fat, but it is the heart-healthy kind: it has omega-3 fatty acids.

White-Meat PoultryStick to the white meat of poultry for excellent, lean protein. Dark meat is a little higher in fat. The skin is loaded with saturated fat, so remove skin before cooking.

Milk, Cheese and YogurtNot only are dairy foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt excellent sources of protein, but they also contain valuable calcium, and many are fortified with vitamin D. Choose skim or low-fat dairy to keep bones and teeth strong and help prevent osteoporosis.

EggsEggs are one of the least expensive forms of protein. The American Heart Association says normal healthy adults can safely enjoy an egg a day.

BeansOne-half cup of beans contains as much protein as an ounce of broiled steak. Plus, these nutritious nuggets are loaded with fiber to keep you feeling full for hours.

Pork TenderloinThis great and versatile white meat is 31 percent leaner than it was 20 years ago.

SoyFifty grams of soy protein daily can help lower cholesterol by about 3 percent. Eating soy protein instead of sources of higher-fat protein and maintaining a healthy diet can be good for your heart.

Lean BeefLean beef has only one more gram of saturated fat than a skinless chicken breast. Lean beef is also an excellent source of zinc, iron, and vitamin B12.

Protein on the GoIf you dont have time to sit down for a meal, grab a meal replacement drink, cereal bar or energy bar. Check the label to be sure the product contains at least 6 grams of protein and is low in sugar and fat.

Protein at BreakfastResearch shows that including a source of protein like an egg or Greek yogurt at breakfast along with a high-fiber grain like whole wheat toast can help you feel full longer and eat less throughout the day.

Can a Healthy Lifestyle Lead to Longer Attention Spans? – Medical News Bulletin

Executive functions consist of sets of important cognitive functions that undergo a major developmental phase throughout adolescence. These executive cognitive processes include attentional control, inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, in addition to reasoning, problem-solving, and planning, and are essential for academic performance and physical and mental health. Attentional control is understood to be essential in any learning process, as it facilitates selective attention to particular stimuli while simultaneously inhibiting other distractions. During adolescence, modifiable factors that make a healthy lifestyle, such as diet and physical activity may promote cognitive development and attention capacity.

Previous research has suggested that dietary patterns may demonstrate a stronger association with executive functions than single nutrient/food intakes. Since similar implications may apply to the study of attention capacity, an article published in British Journal of Nutrition aimed to investigate the associations of dietary patterns and macronutrient composition with attention capacity in European adolescents.

The cross-sectional study examined 384 (165 male and 219 female) adolescent participants between the ages of 12.5 and 17.5 years from five European countries in the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence study. The d2 Test of Attention was administered in a classroom under the supervision of a fieldworker to examine attention capacity and response inhibition, and dietary intake was evaluated through two non-consecutive 24 hour recalls using a computer-based self-administered tool. Three dietary patterns were assessed: diet quality index considered quality, diversity, and equilibrium; ideal diet score (advocated by the American Heart Association) which is based on the DASH diet and has previously been linked to cognitive performance in children; and Mediterranean diet score, which has been correlated with cognition in older adults. Additionally, macronutrient and fibre intakes were calculated.

Data analysis indicated that a healthier diet pattern (higher diet quality index and ideal diet score) was associated with greater attention capacity in European adolescents. Interestingly, little evidence suggested that the Mediterranean diet score or macronutrient/fibre intake were correlated with attention capacity. In order to more comprehensively investigate these relationships, intervention studies evaluating a causal relationship between a healthy lifestyle, diet quality and attention capacity in adolescence are required.

Western diets rich in meat and refined sugars but poor in vegetables, fruits and fish have been associated with impaired cognitive function due to increased oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and impaired blood-brain barrier integrity. Fruits and vegetables that contain high levels of neuroprotective polyphenols and micronutrients such as folate may be crucial for cognitive development. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which is vulnerable to changes in the diet, may also influence cognition, due to its involvement in the growth and survival of many types of neurons and synaptic plasticity. As well, insulin resistance and high blood pressure may negatively influence cognition.

There is a myriad of factors that influence cognition, attention and executive function. This study sheds some light on a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition as an important factor influencing executive function in adolescence. Improving overall nutrition is an important strategy to improve attention control in adolescents.

Testosterone replacement therapy associated with improved urinary, sexual function – ProHealth

Reprinted with the kind permission of Life Extension.

August 23 2017.An article appearing on July 18, 2017 in theJournal of Urologydocuments improvements in sexual function, urinary function and quality of life among men who receivedtestosterone replacement therapy.

The prospective registry study involved 656 men with low testosterone levels and symptoms of testosterone deficiency, among whom 360 were regularly treated with parenteral testosterone undecanoate for up to 10 years. The remainder of the subjects, who chose not to be treated with testosterone, received biannual routine clinic visits.

The researchers, from Boston University School of Medicine and School of Public Health in collaboration with German urologists, found that men who received testosterone therapy experienced significant decreases in their International Prostate Symptom Score, post-voiding bladder volume and Aging Males Symptoms scale, which assesses health-related quality of life. The percentage of patients without erectile dysfunction significantly improved in the testosterone treated group, from 17.1% at the beginning of the study, to 74.4% of the study at the last visit. In contrast, subjects who did not receive the hormone experienced deterioration in erectile function as well as in voiding functions. Prostate specific antigen (PSA), a marker which, when elevated, is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, remained unchanged in both groups over the course of the study.

While there were five deaths, 8 nonfatal strokes and 8 nonfatal heart attacks over the 8-month median follow-up period in the untreated group, none of these events occurred among those who received testosterone.

Long-term testosterone therapy, in men with testosterone deficiency, was well tolerated with excellent adherence suggesting a high level of patient satisfaction, authors Karim Sultan Haider and colleagues conclude. A progressive and sustained improvement in urinary and sexual function was recorded in men receiving long-term testosterone therapy, contributing to overall improvement in quality of life.

Transhumanism and Libertarianism Are Entirely Compatible – Reason (blog)

Luis Manuel Tapia Bolivar/DreamstimeA fight over whether or not transhumanism can be libertarian broke out over at The American Conservative. The contretemps began with an article by Zoltan Istvan, author of The Transhumanist Wager. Istvan is also seeking to become the Libertarian Party candidate for governor of California.

In "The Growing World of Libertarian Transhumanism," Istvan optimistically asserts that "freedom from the government will allow radical science to go on undisturbed."

Zoltan defines transhumanism as "the international movement of using science and technology to radically change the human being and human experience. Its primary goal is to deliver and embrace a utopian techno-optimistic world." Due to rapid technological progress "the world is shifting under our feetand libertarian transhumanism is a sure way to navigate the chaos to make sure we arrive at the best future possible."

Kai Weiss, a researcher at the Austrian Economics Center and Hayek Institute in Vienna, Austria, swiftly denounced the piece. "Transhumanism should be rejected by libertarians as an abomination of human evolution," he wrote.

Clearly there is some disagreement.

Weiss is correct that Istvan doesn't expend much intellectual effort linking transhumanism with libertarian thinking. Istvan largely assumes that people seeking to flourish should have the freedom to enhance their bodies and minds and those of their children without much government interference. So what abominable transhumanist technologies does Weiss denounce?

Weiss includes defeating death, robotic hearts, virtual reality sex, telepathy via mind-reading headsets, brain implants, ectogenesis, artificial intelligence, exoskeleton suits, designer babies, and gene editing tech. "At no point [does Istvan] wonder if we should even strive for these technologies," Weiss thunders.

While Istvan may not wonder, Weiss fails to make a single argument against these technological developments: It is apparently self-evident to him that they are evil.

As with all new technologies, unintended consequences are inevitable and people can and will surely misuse them. Libertarians know all too well that vigilance against government abuse of modern technologies is vital. These worries do not, however, constitute preemptive arguments for preventing people from voluntarily seeking to use the fruits of innovation to work out how to live the best lives that they can.

Oddly, as a riposte against libertarian transhumanism, Weiss cites Christian conservative Rod Dreher's assertion that "choice matters more than what is chosen. The Technological Man is not concerned with what he should desire; rather, he is preoccupied with how he can acquire or accomplish what he desires." This is a non-sequitur. Of course, libertarians (and one hopes most other folks) are concerned about what it is that we should desire. The central question is who, if anyone, has the right to stop us from pursuing our private and non-aggressive desires once we've applied our intellects and moral imaginations to figuring out what it is that we want?

Progressives and conservatives believe government has extensive authority to tell citizens how to live their lives. Libertarians do not. On that count, Weiss is entirely correct to call out Istvan for succumbing to authoritarianism when he advocates for licensing reproduction as a way to prevent overpopulation.

As someone who evidently thinks he is committed to enlarging human liberty, Weiss would do well to ponder this observation from economics Nobelist Friedrich Hayek's The Constitution of Liberty:

Nowhere is freedom more important than where our ignorance is greatestat the boundaries of knowledge, in other words, where nobody can predict what lies a step ahead.the ultimate aim of freedom is the enlargement of those capacities in which man surpasses his ancestors and to which each generation must endeavor to add its shareits share in the growth of knowledge and the gradual advance of moral and aesthetic beliefs, where no superior must be allowed to enforce one set of views of what is right or good and where only further experience can decide what should prevail. It is wherever man reaches beyond his present self, where the new emerges and assessment lies in the future, that liberty ultimately shows its value.

Hayek's point is that human beings are terrible at foresight. Engaging in a robust process of trial, error, and correction is how nearly all moral and technological progress has ever been made.

As I have earlier argued:

The highest expression of human nature and dignity is to strive to overcome the limitations imposed on us by our genes, our evolution and our environment. Future generations will look back at the beginning of the 21st century and be astonished that some well-meaning and intelligent people actually wanted to stop bio-nano-infotech research and deployment just to protect their cramped and limited vision of human nature. If transhumanism is allowed to progress, I predict that our descendants will look back and thank us for making their world of longer, healthier and abler lives possible.

While Weiss asserts "it is time for libertarians to argue against the notion of extreme transhumanism," he ultimately concedes "the state shouldn't prohibit it." So long as he leaves government power out it, Weiss is, of course, free to argue as much as he likes that transhumanism is an abomination contrary to libertarian thinking. But I suspect that few people, especially folks committed to liberty and the development of technologies that enable them and their progeny to have better chances to lead flourishing lives, will heed his Luddite counsel.

For those interested in libertarian arguments in favor of transhumanism, you may be interested in my essay, "The Case for Enhancing People" and my book, Liberation Biology: The Scientific and Moral Case for the Biotech Revolution.

Disclosure: I was on a panel with Istvan at FreedomFest in Las Vegas a month ago discussing the much dreaded prospect of designer babies. I am generally in favor of allowing parents to use modern biotechnologies with the goal of improving the prospects that their children will enjoy flourishing lives.

Transhumanism – Catholicism.org

Having fouled Earth with the works of their modern substitute for religion, science and technology, liberals imagine they can build a perfect world in outer space by means of science and technology that are now more advanced than they were in the past, or so it is boasted. It is what NASA has been about since the agencys inception. The effort has been joined in recent years by billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos with space projects of their own financed by them. However, there is a fly in the liberals ointment.

It is that their planned perfect world would be inhabited by imperfect human beings, men and women who are often irrational, some to the degree that they persist in holding to the preposterous notion that a Palestinian peasant two thousand years ago was God, and all of them subject to emotions which can be unruly and lead to messy situations. This, despite liberalism with its belief in the perfectibility of man, having long ago replaced religion as the core around which the life of society is lived.

Some very rich and powerful men, not to speak of scientists and technologists of like mind, think there is now a solution to the problem (as they see it) of human imperfection. It is called transhumanism. Perhaps you have heard of it. The literature of transhumanism is quite extensive. Heavily funded foundations promote it. References to it show up regularly in mass media. Persons under forty are apt to talk about it at social gatherings when they want to appear to have intellectual interests.

Like Christianity ever since the so-called Reformation shattered the unity of the Faith, sectarian differences exist within transhumanism, but all its adherents believe in, work toward, or otherwise support an undertaking of the kind that could only be conceived in a post-Christian age like ours: melding human beings and computers. The idea is to upload artificial intelligence (A.I.) into men so they will become, transhumanists say, more than human. Christians would say it will make them, if successful, less so, but were not going to get into that here.

Not all Christians would say it anyway. Although most transhumanists are atheists, they recognize the Jesuit paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin as a precursor. To anyone looking for clarity of thought and expression the woolly verbiage of Teilhards writings make them difficult to read, but it is possible to get his drift. It appeals to the kind of Catholics who strive to reconcile truths taught by the Church with science and technology in order to rationalize their dependence on machines to transport them, cool them, make things for them, entertain them, keep them alive in some circumstances, do more and more of their thinking for them.

Being a paleontologist, Teilhard was a great believer in evolution. What he envisioned, decades before the development of the internet and worldwide web, was all machines linked in a network by which, and in which, human minds would merge, all consciousness becoming unified so that it would eventually break through the material framework of Time and Space and arrive at what he called Omega Point the Divine, Christ. Of course at that point human beings would not be as we know them and as they have always existed.

Julian Huxley, the famed British eugenicist, was a close friend of Teilhard, but a non-believer. In a 1951 lecture he presented a secularized version of Teilhard: Such a broad philosophy might perhaps be called, not Humanism, because that has certain unsatisfactory connotations, but Transhumanism. It is the idea of humanity attempting to overcome its limitations and to arrive at fuller fruition

Oh, those irksome limitations! (i.e., irrational beliefs and emotions.)

Many transhumanists see Christian belief in particular as positively threatening. Simon Young, one of their leading thinkers, has written: The greatest threat to humanitys continued evolution is theistic opposition to Superbiology in the name of a belief system based on blind faith in the absence of evidence.

Perhaps the most influential transhumanist thinker is Ray Kurzwell, a director of engineering at Google. A book he wrote in 1999, The Age of Spiritual Machines, is a kind of bible of the movement. The twenty-first century will be different, he said therein. The human species, along with the computerized technology it created, will be able to solve age-old problemsand will be in a position to change the nature of mortality in a postbiological future.

Change the nature of mortality? He means his spiritual machines will live forever, their bodies incorruptible, immune to disease and decay. To acquire knowledge, all theyll have to do is upload it effortlessly to their brains.

Kurzwell calls the point in evolution where this happens Singularity. It is analogous to Teilhards Omega Point.

Some transhumanists, including Kurzwell, talk about resurrecting the dead. Theyll do it, they think, using the DNA we all leave behind. This is where space travel comes back into the picture, though in a way unforeseen by the men who launched NASA: What with the dead being brought back to life and everybody living forever (as spiritual machines), it wont take long before Earth really is overpopulated. Migration to other planets will be necessary.

The billionaire Elon Musk identifies as a transhumanist. Besides developing the Tesla electric automobile, he is best known for Space X, a project for developing reusable rockets with a view to their eventually transporting men and material to Mars for human colonization of the Red Planet. (Since there is no oxygen on Mars, vehicles on the planet will have to be powered by electricity. Hence the Tesla.)

Peter Thiel is another billionaire transhumanist and financial angel to enterprises like Future of Humanity Institute and Singularity University. Although he was given a speakers slot at last years Republican National Convention, he is less well known to the public than Elon Musk. Born in Germany and now a citizen of New Zealand, he was a co-founder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook, is openly gay, a huge fan of Tolkein (he says he has read Lord of the Rings more than ten times), was a member of the Libertarian Party until 2016, and seems to have an unerring instinct for placing himself where power and influence can be had. His membership on the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group shows that. So did his being named to the executive committee of Donald Trumps transition team after Trump won last Novembers election (he had contributed $1.25 million to the Trump presidential campaign). It is known that he is a partner of Jared Kushner in one of the latters investment operations. Oh, he also describes himself as a Christian but acknowledges that his beliefs are not orthodox. His financial contributions to transhumanism are weighted toward life-extension and age-reversal projects. (At one point, pre-PayPal, Thiel was a speech-writer for William Bennett when the former drug czar and U.S. Secretary of Education was marketing himself as a morality guru with books like The Book of Virtues and The Childrens Book of Virtues, but grew tired of the job and quit before the public learned that Bennett was a compulsive gambler who had blown millions of dollars at Las Vegas casinos.)

The defense of civilization requires vigilance, but guarding against treachery from within is hard. Western Christian civilization has been undone by leaders who were really Judases, beginning with the priests, bishops and princes who led millions out of the Church at the time of the Protestant revolt commonly called the Reformation. They were followed by the Revolution which first overthrew Christian government in France in 1789 and has continued to unroll so that it does not now exist anywhere. More recently there were the culture wars, which Christians could never have won, not with the weight of modernity against them.

Why? The Judas factor again. Christianity demands sanctification for entrance into Heaven; and self-denial, self-abnegation, self-discipline are requisite to it. Too many modern Christians, faith and belief run out of them, including belief in Heaven except maybe as a place where everybody will go anyway, have preferred self-aggrandizement instead. What they want is all that will make things easier for self or, better yet, enhance it. What could do that to a greater degree than the promise of immortality, especially immortality without pesky emotions and irrational beliefs to mar its perfection?

The trouble is that only a computer could see such a state of things as perfect.

Footnote: Transhumanists argue among themselves as to whether the right of anyone to stay human, especially for religious reasons, should be respected and protected. If these people ever exercise more power and influence than they already do, the argument will probably prove pointless. When most remaining Christians arent Christian enough to face life without the benefits of modernitys existing appurtenances smartphones, processed foods, automobiles, television, air-conditioning, etc., etc. how many will choose Heaven in whose existence they can believe only by faith over the scientific certainty of life in the here and now forever and ever?
