On November 11, 2019, Lipocine issued a press release announcing receipt of a CRL from the FDA regarding its NDA for TLANDO. In the press release, Lipocine advised investors that the FDA had again rejected the NDA for TLANDOthis time because an efficacy trial had not met three of its secondary endpoints.

On this news, Lipocines stock price fell $1.93 per share, or 70.7%, to close at $0.80 per share on November 11, 2019.

Obesity-related co-morbid health conditions are the second leading cause of preventable death, following tobacco use. One-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, and the dramatic rise in the prevalence of pediatric obesity has been predicted to lead to a decline in overall life expectancy. Obese children are at high risk for dyslipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Obese children are also more likely to suffer from obesity as adults. Given the large number of children who are overweight or obese, there is an overwhelming need for effective treatment for overweight and obese children.

The Healthy Lifestyles Program comprises four key services: clinical care, advocacy, education and research.

Shelbyville ISD recognized with Healthy Texas designation – The Light and Champion

The Shelbyville ISD was recently awarded a banner designating it as a Healthy Texas Recognized School District from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for District 5, according to Feleshia Thompson, Shelby County Agrilife Extension Agent.

"Shelbyville ISD was the only Healthy Texas designated school district in the East Region, which consists of 44 counties, Thompson said. Shelbyville teacher Jada Jones was also one of the top winners in our Step-up Scale down weight loss program in the Spring of 2019.

Jean Taylor, Shelbyville ISD school nurse, said the district's healthy advisory committee has been instrumental in searching out ways in which the district can be exposed to improving the health and well being of students, staff and the community in general.

The partnership with Texas A&M Agri-Life Extension has been a fabulous resource in helping reach the goal of Shelbyville ISD being recognized as the first school district in East Texas to be recognized with this District 5 honor, Taylor said.

Thompson was on hand last week to present the school district with a banner recognizing the honor. Taylor said Shelbyville officials also recently received a congratulatory message from Carissa Wilhelm, Texas A&M Healthy Texas Specialist.

Wilhelm said the Healthy Texas program recognizes the commitment the school, staff and students have made to improving their health and the health of their community.

When the Healthy Texas initiative was expanded to East Texas, S.W. Carter became a partner in improving the health of the school and community through education, she said. Studies show that when youth learn health behaviors during their adolescent years they are more likely to adopt those health behaviors and thus lead healthier and productive lives into adulthood.

Wilhelm said S.W. Carter and the Shelbyville ISD have set an example for others and have become leaders in incorporating healthy learning into everyday classroom settings. The elementary campus had 390 participants in the Walk Across Texas program, which educated youth on the importance of physical activity in leading a healthy life, she said.

They had 70 youth go through the Learn Grow Eat & Go program where youth learn how to garden fruits and vegetables and in importance of nutrition in a healthy lifestyle, Wilhelm said. Shelbyville students also participated in the Dinner Tonight Junior program, which focused on balanced and healthy eating for youth, she said.

S.W. Carter Elementary has not just committed to nurturing the health of its students, but also parents and teachers in the school community, Wilhelm said. She said 70 adults completed the Dinner Tonight Cooking School and 22 adults completed the Step-Up, Scale Down program.

We are thrilled to recognize S.W. Carter Elementary School as a Healthy Texas Campus and look forward to continuing to improve the health of students and families for generations to come, Wilhelm said.

CDC says 1 in 5 adolescents and 1 in 4 young adults have prediabetes – KRIS Corpus Christi News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expressed concern on Monday as it released figures that show a significant portion of young Americans are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

According to CDC findings, 1 in 4 young adults aged 19-34 and 1 in 5 adolescents aged 12-18 suffer from prediabetes. Those with prediabetes have elevated blood sugar levels, but have not reached the threshold to be considered diabetic.

The report from the CDC stated that overweight young people were significantly more likely to have prediabetes. The report found that 25.7% of overweight adolescents had elevated blood sugar levels, compared to 16.4 of adolescents of normal weight. Those figures were even pronounced among young adults. 36.6% of overweight young adults were prediabetic compared to 16.6% of young adults with a normal weight.

The prevalence of prediabetes in adolescents and young adults reinforces the critical need for effective public health strategies that promote healthy eating habits, physical activity, and stress management, said CDC Director Robert R. In the last 20 years, the number of adults in the US with diabetes have doubled, according to CDC figures.

4 Health Indicators to Use Instead of Weight – LIVESTRONG.COM

Curious whether you're on track to live a long, healthy life into your golden years? Most health professionals would tell you to hop on a scale, since numbers like weight and BMI (body mass index) are often used to predict your chances of developing certain diseases and your life expectancy overall. The problem? Neither weight nor BMI is truly an accurate or adequate measure of your health.

Your walking speed may be an even better health indicator than your weight, according to research.

That's because "weight and BMI are not customized to sex or body type, nor do they take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition and ethnic differences," says John P. Higgins, MD, a sports cardiologist and professor of cardiovascular medicine at The McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

Take, for example, a bodybuilder with a dense muscle mass. He or she may erroneously fall into an overweight or obese classification for weight or BMI. Conversely, these metrics don't address the problem of normal-weight obese people, otherwise known as "skinny fat" (we hate the term, too), who appear thin with average BMIs but have a high percentage of body fat and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, per a May 2015 study in Cardiovascular Diabetology.

Instead of putting too much weight on weight, a growing body of research is finding other measures that may be useful tools for evaluating your health and risk of disease. In fact, these four metrics walking speed, push-up ability, grip strength and waist circumference can reveal more about your state of health than any scale. The best part? You can track them yourself.

Note: Even though you can calculate these metrics on your own, they shouldn't substitute for visiting the doctor or getting regular checkups. Better yet, as you gather these measurements at home, share them with your medical provider who can best analyze the numbers for a fuller picture of your health.

How fast you stroll is linked to how long you live, according to a June 2019 study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Researchers found that brisk walkers enjoy longer life expectancies than those with a slower stride, regardless of their BMI. Perhaps this is because walking as opposed to weight is a functional measure of several important things: "Walking tests balance, coordination, lower limb and core strength, as well as cardiovascular health," says Dr. Higgins. Essentially, you need to be in good physical shape to keep up a swift pace.

How to Measure Your Walking Speed:

Walk 1 mile. Then divide the number 60 by how minutes it took you to walk the mile. For example, if you spent 30 minutes strolling, your speed would clock in at 2 miles per hour.

Alternatively, time yourself as you walk 6 meters. Divide the number six by how many seconds it took you to complete the 6-meter walk. So, if you walk six meters in three seconds, your pace is 2 meters per second.

Ideally, you should aim for a walking speed that's at least 2.4 miles per hour (that's a 25-minute mile) or 1 meter per second.

Since push-ups work your entire body and require strength and endurance the number you can complete is another predictor of your overall health status. "Push-ups are a good measure of both upper body and core strength, as well as cardiovascular health," Dr. Higgins says. "In short, the more push-ups you can do, the stronger and better cardiovascular system you have."

As a matter of fact, a longitudinal cohort study of 1,100 adult men found that those who could perform more than 40 push-ups had a significantly lower risk of developing heart disease compared with participants who could complete fewer than 10 push-ups, per research published in the February 2019 issue of JAMA Network Open.

How to Measure Your Push-Ups:

Try to perform as many push-ups as possible with perfect technique before tiring. Aim to work your way up to 50 to 100 push-ups per day, Dr. Higgins says.

Your grip strength is a surprisingly good health indicator.

Oddly enough, your ability to squeeze a grip meter can forecast whether you'll live to a ripe old age. But why? Well, grip strength may help to identify muscle and cardiovascular weaknesses. That's because how tight you can grip something relates to both your upper body strength as well as your heart's ability to handle pumping against a higher pressure (because your blood pressure rises with the act of gripping), says Dr. Higgins.

Not convinced? A study of a half million middle-aged people found that weaker grip strength was strongly linked with the occurrence of negative health outcomes, such as lung cancer and heart disease, according to research published in the May 2018 issue of BMJ. What's more, grip strength was an even better predictor of death than blood pressure or overall physical activity.

How to Measure Your Grip Strength:

To calculate grip strength, simply squeeze a handgrip dynamometer at a gym or your doctor's office. If you don't have access to a grip meter, you can use a bathroom scale, says Dr. Higgins. Simply squeeze the scale with both your hands (thumb on plate and fingers behind scale), then divide the number of pounds by two. The optimal measurement is about 110 pounds for men and 70 for women.

To improve your grip strength, you need to build muscle. Commit to resistance training two or three times per week. Dr. Higgins also suggests investing in a pair of handgrip squeezers. Do a set of 10 squeezes with each hand twice a day.

A large waist circumference can be a warning sign for future health problems. That's because waist circumference is an indicator of abdominal fat. In other words, your waist size increases as your internal fat deposits do. And excessive belly fat is associated with health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Indeed, a study that looked at data from 650,000 white adults found that a higher waist circumference was connected to a greater incidence of mortality at all levels of BMI, per findings published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

How to Measure Waist Circumference:

On your bare stomach, loop a tape measure around your waist, just above the upper hip bone. Take the measure while you exhale (but don't suck in your tummy!). An ideal waist circumference is less than 35 inches for women and less than 40 for men, according to Dr. Higgins.

When it comes to assessing your heart health, you might also want to keep an eye on your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

"Blood pressure is a big barometer of cardiovascular health," Dr. Higgins says. "When your blood pressure is chronically high, your cardiovascular system and/or sympathetic nervous system (responsible for your fight or flight response) is overstressed."

Whether the root cause of your increased blood pressure relates to something physical, mental or even lack of sleep, the strain on your body isn't healthy. If your blood pressure is greater than 130/80 on a regular basis, you should see your medical professional, who can help assess your situation and assist you in making healthy lifestyle changes to lower your numbers.

Cholesterol is also a good measure of cardiovascular risk, says Dr. Higgins: "The higher the bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), the higher the chance of heart attack and stroke."

While your cholesterol is often strongly tied to genetics, there are still actionable steps you can take to reduce your levels, according to Dr. Higgins, who suggests limiting your saturated fat intake, following a Mediterranean diet with more
plant-based foods and exercising regularly to increase your good HDL cholesterol.

Cancer can be capricious. Its mechanism involves nature and nurture, oncogenes and proto-oncogenes, fate and bad luck. Even without testing, we can learn some risk through family history. The thing about a risk, though, is that the genes may or may not follow through.

Of course, if cancer is likely, there are things we can do but sometimes the things we do are a way to trick ourselves into feeling that we are in control. Sometimes we are in control, as when a woman chooses to have a prophylactic mastectomy or oophorectomy. Sometimes we are not, even with the best of intentions.

Although two maternal great aunts died of complications of breast cancer, family history seemed distant to me at first. When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I started to pay attention. At her urging, I got a screening mammogram at 35 and then routine mammograms after that. I also experimented with diet. I remember giving up dairy fat at 35 because I read somewhere that it is not good for cancer cells. Although I gave it up, I took it back up again. Now I try moderation.

When my brother was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, though, I did not change my lifestyle. Shocked by this disease in a young man, I did not worry about my lymphocytes at all, even though having a first-degree relative with the disease is a risk factor (among others). Decades later, when 23andme shared a health profile, Hodgkin's Disease appeared in my list as a high-risk health challenge. Breast cancer risk, curiously, was set at average risk.

You never know what life will give you. When I saw Hodgkin's Disease in my DNA profile, I did not feel worried at all. I just felt greater empathy for my brother, who died of that disease at 21. After all, the two of us shared about 50% of our genes. In his case, something caused his cancer to activate. In my case, nothing did, or nothing has, even with a few co-factors, although I did end up with an aggressive breast cancer.

My brother did nothing wrong to get his cancer. I did nothing wrong to get breast cancer. All the two of us ever did was live our lives. Who knows how we would have turned out if at birth our parents had kept us in a glass bubble of a Garden of Eden, cut off from all toxins and carcinogens? I do know this: Cancer became just part of our journeys, individual and connected. It made us stronger.

Another thing 23andme told me is that the average weight for women with my genetic profile is about 40 pounds more than I weigh. That statistic has inspired me to contemplate the complex relationship between nature and nurture as much as all my experience with the cancer of family members does. I also know that eating a certain way affects the risk of diabetes, another family heirloom, as well as cancer.

When I chose a healthy lifestyle, I hoped this lifestyle wouldhelp me to avoid future cancer (or diabetes). Even if it does not, one thing I know is that I was thankful to be healthy (aside from cancer) when treatment began. It made surviving easier. Maybe it does not hurt to make choices to try to scare away the boogeyman of genes, even if the choices do not always help. I do admit that after my cancer diagnosis I exclaimed, among other things, "Now I can eat bacon!" That cynical thought passed. Life went on. Life goes on.

Rapamycin has anti-aging effect on human skin – Medical News Today

A recent study has reported that rapamycin, a drug that has long served as an immune suppressor, may also slow aging in human skin.

The small clinical trial found that regular application of rapamycin to the backs of the hands appears to reduce wrinkles and sagging and improve skin tone.

After 8 months, most of the hands that had received rapamycin treatment showed an increase in collagen and lower levels of a marker of aging in skin cells compared with a placebo.

In a recent Geroscience paper, the researchers conclude that rapamycin treatment showed a "clear impact" on skin aging at both the molecular and clinical levels.

The team that led the trial comes from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, where senior study author Christian Sell, Ph.D., is an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Since discovering rapamycin in the soil of Easter Island half a century ago, scientists have found that the bacterial antifungal compound has many effects in the body.

The drug, which takes its name from Rapa Nui, the native term for the Pacific island, can suppress the immune system and prevent cell replication in mammals.

A major mechanism through which rapamycin interacts with cells is the aptly-named mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). Studies have linked the disruption of this pathway to cancer, obesity, and diabetes, as well as genetic and neurological conditions.

An earlier study by Sell and colleagues had demonstrated that rapamycin could improve cell function and slow aging in cultured cells.

Other researchers have also shown that by blocking TOR proteins in yeast cells, rapamycin causes the yeast to grow smaller cells that live longer.

"If you ramp the pathway down, you get a smaller phenotype," explains Sell.

Scientists have also discovered that rapamycin can slow aging in flies, worms, and mice.

"When you slow growth, you seem to extend lifespan and help the body repair itself at least in mice," Sell continues, noting, "This is similar to what is seen in calorie restriction."

The new investigation, however, is the first to demonstrate an anti-aging effect in living human tissue.

For the study, which took the form of a clinical trial, the team recruited 13 volunteers who were over 40 years of age.

They asked the participants to apply rapamycin cream to the back of one hand and a placebo cream to the back of the other hand every 1 or 2 days before bedtime.

The participants attended evaluation visits every 2 months for 8 months. During the visits, investigators took photographs to evaluate skin wrinkles and general appearance.

The participants also gave blood samples at the 6-month visit and underwent a skin biopsy of both hands at the 8-month visit.

Tests on the blood samples showed that the rapamycin had not entered the participants' bloodstream.

At the end of 8 months, most of the hands that had received rapamycin treatment showed an increase in collagen and a reduction in p16 protein.

Collagen is a protein that gives skin its structure, and p16 is a measure of cell senescence, or deterioration through aging. Skin that has more senescent cells is more wrinkled.

Skin that has higher levels of p16 carries a greater risk of infection and also tends to tear more easily and heal more slowly. These are all signs of dermal atrophy, a skin condition that is common in older people.

Investigations of p16 have shown that human cells release the protein as part of a stress response that occurs following cell damage. These studies have also demonstrated that p16 can function as a tumor suppressor, a type of protein that stops cell growth and division happening too fast or in an uncontrolled way.

Cancer develops when cells begin to behave abnormally. This can happen as a result of a mutation that causes cell processes to go awry. As a tumor suppressor, p16 slows down the cell cycle, promoting aging instead of cancer.

"When cells age, they become detrimental and create inflammation," comments Sell.

"That's part of aging," he continues, adding, "These cells that have undergone stress are now pumping out inflammatory markers."

The researchers point out that the new findings are just the early stage of their research, and they need to do a lot more before they can say how best to apply rapamycin to delay aging.

They foresee applications that include improving human performance and extending lifespan.

These would require developing a form of the drug that works at much lower doses than those used to prevent organ rejection and treat cancer.

Sell, and another team member are shareholders of a pharmaceutical company that holds the license for the technology, for which there are two patents pending.

"As researchers continue to seek out the elusive 'fountain of youth' and ways to live longer, we're seeing growing potential for the use of this drug."

It's not just about salon time

There was a time when holidaymakers took a break by going to a hotel cellar to get a quick rubdown with essential oils. Maybe there was a sauna and a beauty salon somewhere. That has changed radically.

Today, many hotels offer lush bathing landscapes and large spas to serve very different needs. "The hoteliers are preparing themselves for additional requests," says journalist Christian Werner of the RELAX Guide in Vienna, such as wellness with children, only for adults or serving organic cuisine.

Wellness is a complete lifestyle

Lutz Hertel of the German Wellness Association sees a strong need for real wellness instead of short, everyday escapes. Exotic treatments such as Lomi Lomi Nui, a form of massage from Hawaii, are losing market share. There is a stronger demand for yoga, which can be incorporated into the daily routine at any holiday resort.

Claudia Wagner of travel agency Fit Reisen also sees a need for holistic self-optimization. Her guests want deeply effective, individual breaks for stress management, weight loss, detox or anti-aging treatments.

Everything goes back to nature

Hiking, forest bathing, yoga, tai chi and bouldering: The experts see a turn toward nature. Forests and meadows become the backdrops for sport, meditation or even open-air massages. And the boundaries between wellness and sport are blurred.

Werner says the demand for the good old fitness room with treadmills and weights is declining. If you want to keep people coming to the hotel gym, it's got to have the latest generation of machines.

Bring nature to the spa

"Old Roman columns and artificial palms in bathing landscapes are a thing of the past," Hertel says. Especially in Bavaria, Austria and South Tyrol, the spa areas inside are often enlivened with moss, plants and small trees, and built with a view and entrance into the countryside. Prized outside appearances include wood and stone if possible from the region as well as features such as hot springs, natural swimming ponds and forest proximity.

Find remedies from the region

Regional treatments to strengthen the powers of self-healing also follow the natural trend. In the Ulten Valley in South Tyrol, the lanolin in the cozy sheep's wool bath allows you to benefit from the natural Alpine herbs that the sheep have eaten. In Halkidiki in Greece, rituals with olive oil, salt, medicinal herbs, yogurt and honey are based on ancient Greek healing methods. In Northern Ireland, an ancient bathing tradition with algae has been revived under the name Sea Haven Therapy.

The classic health resorts are increasingly taking part, vying for ever-more-demanding wellness customers with traditional local remedies. In the Limes-Therme Bad Goegging, for example, guests sweat in the moor mud bath or indulge in a hop bath, which includes a beer.

Caress the soul

Mental support assists the body in healing: Modern forms of traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda use this approach, which has become more important for wellness. "We recognize more and more that our mental condition contributes significantly to the self-healing of the body," Wagner says.

Always take it nice and slow

In yoga, the trend is toward calm yin yoga, where you take your time settling into deep stretches instead of getting your heart rate up with a powerful series of sun salutes. When it comes to fitness, "slow jogging" promises healthy, weight-reducing pleasure running.

Hertel sees the new jogging trend as the expression of a new philosophy that strives for a better work-life balance. "It is about a less rushed, more conscious and more enjoyable life," comparable to the slow food movement.

Cardiovascular disease affects millions of Americans, especially those over the age of 50. The term CVD encompasses a number of conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, heart failure, valve disease or arrhythmias.

If you are one of the lucky ones without CVD, preventing such disease is within your grasp. If you have been diagnosed with a form of CVD, there are still a multitude of ways to minimize your future risk of further health-related issues. Heart health is simply making lifestyle changes for the long term. At the center of heart health is feeling empowered about what features are important.

Diet: Taking a hard look at what you eat (and snack on) on a daily basis is important. Eating meals rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains and low on refined sugars, processed foods and red meats are keys to great long-term health.

Exercise: While engaging in at least moderate activity for 30 minutes per day, five days a week is ideal, some of us do not have such a luxury with time. Instead, take small steps toward the goal. Take five-minute walks around your job at lunch time. Park in the spot farthest away from the entrance to your job. Being able to adapt to your surroundings is key.

Sleep: The magic number is 7. Not having at least seven hours of sleep at night leads to weight gain, higher blood pressure and ultimately poor heart health. Make sure you have your doctor screen you for a condition called sleep apnea.

Stress: Our world moves quickly and most of us can do little to change the stressors in our lives. We can, however, be mindful of the way we internally respond to stress. Being mindful of our levels of stress is a great first step. Exercise and daily meditation are just two ways that can help relieve the stress levels, which are linked to heart disease.

Numbers: Knowing some basic numbers is important to continue the quest to optimal heart health. These numbers include: weight, blood pressure and cholesterol. While there are several more numbers that your doctor will discuss with you, these are a great start.

Understanding that you have the power to prevent or minimize future risk of CVD is key to a heart-healthy lifestyle. Dont wait for your doctor to discuss the above with you. If you havent already, take charge and take control of the above tips. The power is in your hands.

The third season of Nigerias first weight loss reality TV show, the Fastest Shedder is aimed at raising awareness against obesity and encouraging plus size people to maintain a healthy lifestyle.The objectives of the reality show, according to the convener, Seyi Olusore, is to create a unique social oriented platform where contestants and viewers can be educated on fitness and healthy living, share their weight loss stories whilst getting support and encouragement.

Olusore, popularly known as Sheddams said that many Nigerians suffer a lot of emotional, social and physical abuse from being obese thus his decision to introduce the fastest shedder to help raise awareness against obesity and body shaming. The fastest shedder aims at engaging people with obesity in an interesting and fun-mixed weight loss activities in a serene, safe environment that will help restore confidence to them.According to him, The programme proves that Nigerians can do anything they set their minds to and that we also have untapped talent who are passionate about their health just waiting to be discovered.The TV series intends to be a life changing adventure with fitness and wellness experts set to ensure that wellness is achieved via recommended diet and exercise routines, he said.Sequel to the success of the last season and the level of awareness generated in African countries, the show will this season, be open to any interested candidate from all countries in Africa.

Auditions are currently ongoing and the show will end in March next year. It would run for two weeks and will be aired across select TV stations. Auditions are organised such a way that each contestant starts with a weigh-in to determine their initial statistics which will serve as a baseline to determine the overall result.The fastest shedder is determined by who has the highest weight loss relative to her initial weight.This season will feature people who feel overweight and would like to shed weight. Judges for this season are Bimbo Ogunboye (Lepacious Bose), Omotunde Adebowale (Lolo 1) Adedamola Ladejobi (Askdamz) Madey among others.
