Lipocines lead product candidate is TLANDO (LPCN 1021), an oral testosterone replacement therapy. The Company has previously submitted New Drug Applications (NDA) for TLANDO twice and, both times, received Complete Response Letters (CRL) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejecting the NDAs. The Company received the first CRL in June 2016 and the second in May 2018.

On March 27, 2019, Lipocine issued a press release announcing new topline results from a study evaluating TLANDOs effects on blood pressure (one issue cited by the FDA in a prior CRL rejecting TLANDOs NDA), as well as the Companys intention to refile the NDA for TLANDO in the second quarter of 2019.

Testosterone: What It Can And Can’t Do, Signs You’re Low, And How To Increase It – Men’s Health

Feeling tapped out? Foggy? Just not all that into sex? Gotta be your testosterone, some people would have you believe. And were believing it, too, with interest and investment in T-boosters and T-supplements rising steadily in the past decade.

Dont get us wrong: testosterone is one critical hormone. Babies first encounter it in utero, when it triggers the differentiation of boys from girls. In puberty, it contributes to your bone growth and muscle mass, and continues to affect functions including your red-blood-cell production and mood stability.

But the message certain vested interests are sending plays right into the economic and social anxieties men are facing. Its like when anti anxiety meds such as Valium first came onto the scene, says urologist Elizabeth Kavaler. All these middle-aged women were addicted to Valium, because that was the solution to everything. Testosterone has become the new answer for a life of quiet desperation. More and more of us are feeling the exhaustion of uneasiness. We are being asked to do more with less. Were just trying to get through the day alive. Men think, Well, if I just get a little testosterone, Im going to feel great! Kavaler says. And thats not the case.

Theres so much information out there about T much of it speculation and lore that leads us to jump to conclusions about it. Men put all kinds of psychological weight on their testosterone number a low one makes you think youre somehow less manly; a high one means youre basically LeBron James and thats where we get things wrong. Theres little evidence for those stereotypes. Low doesnt automatically imply youre weak or retiring; high doesnt guarantee you muscles or MVP athletic performance.

A low number might not even be a low number for very long. It might just indicate that you havent been treating yourself very well. A high number doesnt mean youre programmed to be aggressive. As long as your T is in the normal range, theres nothing about a high number thats better than a low one, or vice versa. In the name of science and good journalism, I got my testosterone tested twice while writing this story.

It put my assumptions up against a pretty big test, too. What do you really know about this famous hormone? Here, we break down the best and latest information to give you the clearest picture yet of what T means for you.

You should have at least two blood tests, since T is constantly in flux. It peaks in the morning, so if youre young and on a typical sleeping schedule, aim to be tested by 10am. If youre over 50, it doesnt matter as much. Also note: vitamins with biotin can lower your score, so skip them for three days before testing.

A T level of 8.64 to 29 nanomoles per litre of blood is considered normal. If you are close to 8.64 and you feel fine, then youre no less healthy than a guy whose level is 35 and also feels fine. Theres an exception to that, though. (See What the Numbers Mean.)

I got my first test at the tail end of a busy week. Id slept less than five hours the night before, then scrambled to the phlebotomist in a daze. My number: 9.9. Thats in the normal range, but just barely. I have no symptoms of low T, but it was hard to shake the feeling that there was something wrong with me, even though I know that normal is normal, no matter where it is in that range. Eleven days later, I was tested again. My number was 14.8. Why such a dramatic change? It might be because Id slept better and cut out my multivitamins. Irrational or not, I felt like more of a man. The whole experience was a microcosm of our relationship with T. We act like its destiny, but its just biology easily misunderstood and more varied than we think.

Common symptoms of below-normal t, which could affect as many as 500,000 men in Australia (generally older men):

1. Lack of energy

Youre lethargic not like you didnt get enough sleep last night but like no matter what you do, you never feel rested.

2. A paunch

Having a dad bod doesnt mean you have low T but it could be one indicator.

3. Lack of libido

Sort of. Its the lack of your base level sex drive that sudden feeling of being turned on by the sexy person you spot on the street that indicates low T, according to Dr Tobias Kohler, of the Mayo Clinic. Its not considered low libido when you dont want to have sex on a Thursday night after youve been crushed by work all week.

4. Erectile problems

Only precipitously low T will keep you limp. But if you have problems getting it up, you may have other issues to solve, which may require a visit to a doctor. Or a little blue pill. Or couples therapy

If your t is truly low youve got three courses of action, says mills, in order of increasing aggressiveness. choose wisely.

1. Lifestyle Adjustment

The single best thing you can do to improve your level is be healthier. Avoid stress, get more sleep and lose weight an enzyme in fat tissue converts testosterone to estrogen. Thats one reason flab can lower your T. Its also why overweight guys can develop man boobs, and why bodybuilders who juice can also develop man boobs they dont have much fat, but theyve jacked their T levels so high that theres a lot of it available to be turned into estrogen. Thinking of T strictly as the male sex hormone oversimplifies the complex hormonal interactions that make our bodies work. Which is also why, if you can avoid it, you dont want to go with the needle-in-the-butt routine to raise your T.

2. A Testicle Stimulant (plus lifestyle adjustment)

If your level is low enough to warrant more aggressive treatment, your doctor can prescribe a drug that causes your pituitary to tell your gonads to make more testosterone. The typical choice is clomiphene citrate (Clomid), a common fertility drug for women. Using it doesnt exempt you from needing to get healthy, though, as it doesnt diminish the risk of losing T to bad sleep and a beer belly.

3. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (and yes, youll still need to adjust your lifestyle)

This should be your last resort. When you give your body T, it stops making its own, and theres no guarantee it can start again. Before you replace it, find a doctor who can help you choose from the following delivery systems (see right), and be glad that weve moved past the early days of replacement therapies, like one in the 1920s that involved transplanting goat testicles into men.

Abandoning Earth: Personhood and the Techno-Fiction of Transhumanism – Patheos

One of the most important contemporary issues is our relation to technology. To be sure, technology is nothing new but has always been integral to human evolution; never before, however, has technology suffused every area of life or shaped human self-understanding to the extent it does today. Consequently, debates about the benefits and possible drawbacks of technology currently dominate all crucial, formative arenas of human existence: work, education, healthcare, social development, and even religion. Critical voices are not lacking in these discussions but, on the whole, we increasingly place our future hopes for society in technological enhancements. Transhumanism, in its pursuit of a humanly engineered evolution that will eventually leave the body behind by uploading our digitized brains to computing platforms, a vision that includes merging human with artificial machine intelligence, is merely the extreme edge of a techno-reasoning that increasingly forms our collective social imaginary.

How is one to assess this development? I suggest that the most effective assessment of techno-reasoning is to probe the range of its imagination. After all, how we perceive the world, others, and ourselves is principally a matter of the imagination. As the well-known Canadian literary critic Northrop Frye put it in The Educated Imagination:

we use our imagination all the time: it comes into all our conversation and practical life: it even produces dreams when we are asleep. Consequently we only have the choice between a badly trained imagination and a well trained one, whether we ever read a poem or not.[1]

Fryes reference to poetry indicates his view that literature best exemplifies the language of the imagination, of how we perceive the world in all its semantic complexity: our use of metaphors and choice of words in everyday speech reveals the vision of society, and indeed of reality that underlies our thoughts and actions. Equally important, the fundamental job of the imagination in ordinary life, then, is to produce out of the society we have to live in, a society we want to live in.[2] We need fiction to envision reality differently. We often use the word fiction to refer to what is untrue or false, but the word actually means creative invention and describes our capacity for understanding and shaping reality meaningfully through narrative. Hence reimagining society differently depends in turn on the sources that train our imagination to produce narratives for our self-understanding.

What should concern us is that Transhumanisms imagination runs only along engineering and computational lines. Transhumanists like to call themselves critical rationalists,[3] but the fact is that this critical aspect is limited to a techno-reasoning that produces a narrative of techno-fiction. When we examine the current techno-reasoning of transhumanism, we will find a strongly diminished view of human identity that reduces consciousness to the activity of neuronal networks we can detach from the body and transferable to a computing platform.[4]

It is generally known that transhumanism denigrates the human body as rather primitive biological form of existence that requires perfection through nano- and computing technologies. Ultimately, as Ray Kurzweil argued in his book How to Build a Human Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed (2012), the brain is a complex biological machine in which human ideas, feelings, and intentions are ultimately tied to neuronal functions of the brain. Kurzweil imagines that the imminent completion of mapping this biological machine anatomically will allow us to digitize its functions and thus transpose human thinking into computational format, permitting in turn the uploading of ones mind (of consciousness, self, or personality) to a data cloud storage. This transhumanist vision indicates a breathtaking ignorance of human cognition and its dependence on biology for a human consciousness. For one, aside from being technologically unfeasible, the computational model of the brain and its possible detachment from the body is flatly contradicted by recent neuroscience and its insistence on embodied cognition.

For example, the well-known neuroscientist Antonio-Damasio breaks with the traditional cognitivist view of human beings as rational minds inhabiting insentient bodies.[5] In his book The Self Comes to Mind (2010), Damasio reintroduces the body as essential for structuring the brain, albeit still based on a representational view of cognition: Because of this curious arrangement, the representation of the world external to the body can come into the brain only via the body itself, namely via its surface. The body and the surrounding environment interact with each other, and the changes caused in the body by that interaction are mapped in the brain. It is certainly true that the mind learns of the world outside via the brain, but it is equally true that the brain can be informed only via the body.[6] You may not consider this concession very great, but eight years later, Damasio rejects the Cartesian mind-body dualism behind traditional neuroscience, arguing that a new, biologically integrated position is now required.[7]

This new position leaves behind a computational model of the mind, rejecting the dried-up mathematical description of the activity of the neurons because it disengaged neurons from the thermodynamics of life.[8] New brain science acknowledges, according to Damasio, that the body as organism, for example through our nervous and immune systems, possesses a kind of perception conveyed through feelings that are registered in turn as complex mental experiences that help us navigate life. Damasio concludes that neural and non-neural structures and processes are not just contiguous [i.e. adjacent, sharing a common boarder] but continuous partners, interactively. They are not aloof entities, signaling each other like chips in a cell phone. In plain talk, brains and bodies are in the same mind-enabling soup.[9] On the basis of this new insight (new to brain scientists at any rate), Damasio rejects the reductive, but sweepingly common notion in the worlds of artificial intelligence, biology, and even neuroscience, that natural organisms would somehow be reducible to algorithms.[10]

Damasios new insights from Neuroscience are a welcome antidote to the severely stunted imagination of the Transhumanists. Even so, neuroscience in general, and transhumanism in particular, suffer from a striking lack of philosophical reflection on the historical origins of the naturalist and functionalist view of organic life that still forms the imaginative framework of cognitive science. Natural scientists, along with all those who pursue their research into human perception in the investigative mode of the natural sciences, still have a hard time with admitting that metaphysics is always at play when imagining what it means to be human. How many scientists (and indeed philosophers) are fully conscious of the historical developments that made possible a purely materialist view of reality?

The philosopher Hans Jonas offers a superb philosophical analysis of this development and its effects on the study of human nature in The Phenomenon of Life: Approaches to a Biological Philosophy (1994). He describes how the duality of mind and spirit of the ancient world was reified into a mind-body dualism by Descartess division of reality into the two spheres of timeless mental ideas on the one hand, and spatio-temporal mechanisms of material stuff on the other hand. Leaving the side of mental ideas to religion and philosophy, he reduced nature (including animals and the human body) to an inert machine running on functional, mathematical principles, wholly explorable through quantifiable data. The legacy of Cartesian dualism was the modern conception of nature without soul or spirit.[11] Encouraged by the enormous success of the scientific method, it was only a matter of time until a secularist science, eager to do away with Descartes God, also claimed the mental sphere for its mechanistic understanding of reality.

This mechanistic monism was further aided by Darwins theory of evolution. Naturalistic evolution exploded Cartesian dualism or a separate mental realm by integrating human beings into a general developmental process. Jonas argues that even though evolution raised once again the problem of how the transcendent freedom and intentionality of consciousness could arise from such a process, the functionalist bias of naturalism closed the door to any arguments that may have led out of the reductionist dead-end of materialist monism. Early evolutionary theory dogmatically adhered to a mechanistic view of causality that tried to explain organic life analogously to complex machines, declaring consciousness to an epiphenomenon, a random side-effect of an essentially material process. This view, argues Jonas, inverts how organic life forms, and in particular human beings, actually function. Human thought and action originate from an intentional center and exercise volitional freedom in their striving to accomplish goals. While we are certainly able to automate strategies for accomplishing goals, this ability does not warrant reducing our humanity to the workings of a complex machine.

Jonas work himself has helped inspire profound changes in evolutionary theory, including the growing conviction among evolutionary psychology that an embodied intentionality or consciousness is intrinsic to organic life itself. The phenomenon of organic life is impossible to describe, let alone understand, without recognizing that a minimal form of intentionality, individuation, and indeed freedom is evident in even the most primitive living organisms striving to survive.

Neither transhumanism, however, nor the AI research that fuels transhumanists hopes for melding human and machine intelligence, have followed this trend of evolutionary biology. Instead, the transhumanists and AI researchers remain beholden to the basic premise of cybernetics that human life and thought boil down to mechanisms controlled by the exchange of information and are therefore amenable to transposition into algorithms so that the essence of human thought and emotion can be digitized and replicated on computational platforms.

This brief historical sketch shows us that transhumanisms abandoning of the earth by leaving behind the body constitutes not a neutral fact based on scientific progress but is indeed a historically conditioned choice. This choice takes one particular aspect of human perception, namely our ability to abstract material from the rich flow of experience to objectify and quantify it for better understanding, and the re-imagines all of reality in these terms. This reductionist ontology ignores the organic and especially the personal aspects characteristic of human life.

It is worth reiterating that the materialist, functionalist premise of transhumanism (and much AI research) is neither empirically convincing nor in any way morally neutral. From a historical point of view, it is actually astonishing how beholden the field of techno-science still is to scientistic attitudes originating in the scientific revolution and the European Enlightenment.

For example, the well-known AI researcher Marvin Minsky (d. 2016), equated belief in consciousness with the kind of religious mumbo jumbo science is supposed to combat.[13] For Minsky, there is no such thing as consciousness, there is no such thing as understanding.[14] Those who believe in such silly superstitions ignorantly hold to this religious idea that there is magic understanding: there is a magic substance that is responsible for understanding and for consciousness, and that there is a deep secret here.[15] For Minsky, the problem of consciousness and understanding with regard to AI simply doesnt exist because he has a thoroughly mechanical, functionalist view of the human mind. For this reason, he looks to Freud as an important figure because hes the first one to consider that the mind is a big complicated kludge of different types of machinery which are specialized for different functions.[16] While most of psychology and other sciences have moved on from Freuds nave mechanical view of the psyche, transhumanism and much popular opinion has not.

One cannot blame transhumanists for wanting to improve human life, but a sober, historical-philosophical analysis of transhumanism exposes it as delusive and naive. The whole idea of engineering a post-human existence by abandoning the organic body is based on an untenable materialist metaphysics. As Hans Jonas perceptively put it, materialistic biology (its armory recently strengthened by cybernetics) is the attempt to understand life by eliminating what actually enables this attempt in the first place: the authentic nature of consciousness and purpose.[17] Only because they suppress the basic structure of organic life and reduce consciousness to an epiphenomenon of materialist functions can transhumanists propose their futuristic vision. Only because they have already reduced life to a machine, however complex, can they imagine a post-humanist future of immortality through technology. The transhumanist imagination concerning our humanity is deceived by the strange proclivity of human reason to interpret human functions by the categories of the artifacts created to replace them, and to interpret artifacts by the categories of the human mind that created them.[18]

Given that transhumanism is driven by this historically conditioned reductionist view of human life, I am less worried about the question whether transhumanism functions as Ersatzreligion, though the growing number of Christian transhumanists is somewhat alarming. Their belief in technology as providential means for procuring god-likeness and immortality makes one wonder about the efficacy of the incarnation. Why did God bother to become a human being rather than a cyborg? Only an imagination already hooked on techno-fiction could suggest that the divine transformation of biological matter is inferior to, or even akin to a man-made metamorphosis through technology.

From a traditional Christian perspective at least, techno-fiction that deems the body to be optional ranks among gnostic heresies. As the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer explained, from an incarnational point of view, we dont have bodies but we are our bodies, and are thus rooted in the earth. Abandoning the earth, he declared, therefore means also to lose touch with our fellow human beings and with God who created us as embodied souls. Bonhoeffer concluded that the man who would leave the earth, who would depart from the present distress, loses the power which still holds him by eternal, mysterious forces. The earth remains our mother, just as God remains our Father, and our mother will only lay in the Fathers arms him who remains true to her.[19]

However, what is of greater concern than grouping transhumanism among gnostic heresies is that the movement perpetuates the pervasive techno-reasoning in our culture by glorifying the functionalist image of human existence that continues to enthral the public social imaginary by means of social media and AI research. Transhumanism is just one example, perhaps the most glamorous one, of our current collective culture delusion that the human mind, human language, and human relations boil down to functions that computers will eventually master in far better ways.

We would do well to listen to critical voices of those well familiar with the computing industry like Jaron Lanier. Lanier, credited with inventing virtual reality, exposes the false and dangerous presuppositions of techno-fictions. For example, he debunks the delusion that AI has anything to do with computers gaining intelligence, let alone sentience. AI, he reminds us, is nothing but a story we tell about our code.[20] This story, he confesses, was originally invented by tech engineers to procure funding from government agencies. AI, in short, does not exist if one implies that machines actually think or feel with even the lowest form of consciousness we know from organic life.

Lanier warns that current techno-fiction and our use of technology are deeply dehumanizing. Social media apps are designed to manipulate users into addiction to exploit their consumer habits. Moreover, the whole gamut of computing technology erodes our self-understanding of what it means to be truly human. Lanier worries that if you design a society to suppress belief in consciousness and experienceto reject any exceptional nature to personhoodthen maybe people can become like machines. The greatest danger, he concludes, is the loss of what sets us apart from all other entities, the loss our personhood. His warning echoes the prophetic voices of other critics like the former software coder Steve Talbot, or the late philosopher Hubert Dreyfus, who also worried that instead of adapting technology to human intelligence we slowly conform human consciousness to the functional logic of machines.

These thinkers show us that one does not have to be a luddite or religious zealot to reject transhumanism or entertain a critical attitude towards the nave embracing of current technologies. What is at stake in the discussion about technology and transhumanism is nothing less than our true humanity. Now, it is certainly the case, in my view, that the more holistic approach to human existence offered by religions, and in particular the Christian teaching that God became a human being, provide better anthropological frameworks for approaching technology than secularist or naturalist approaches; however, the time may be ripe for all those concerned about losing our true humanity to come together in exposing the dehumanizing misconceptions put forward by transhumanists, no matter how much these are presented in the radiant, Luciferian promises of divinity. A new report published on Tuesday alleges that former Democrat President Bill Clinton and two-time failed Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visited the New Mexico ranch of convicted pedophile and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein nearly every year since Clinton left office at the end of his second term.

Bill and Hillary Clinton stayed at Jeffrey Epsteins notorious baby-making ranch almost every year after they left the White House, according to the disgraced financiers estate manager, The Daily Mail reported. The former president was Epsteins closest celebrity mate and the Clintons, along with daughter Chelsea, visited Zorro Ranch a whole bunch of times, a former contractor who ran the IT system at the property told DailyMailTV in an exclusive interview.

The Daily Mail reported that the Clintons never stayed in the main mansion on the massive 10,000 acre property but did stay in one of the guest houses.

This is all according to security expert Jared Kellogg, who was brought in by long-standing ranch manager Brice Gordon to improve security and set up a camera system at the main house and cowboy village, The Daily Mail continued. Kellogg said that at the time of his site walk of Epsteins property, he had barely any knowledge of Epsteins reputation but he said Gordon spent most of the time boasting about the Clintons frequent appearance at the estate.

Kellogg told The Daily Mail: My access was very controlled. During the site walk, it was dictated where I could and couldnt go. There were certain facilities I wasnt allowed to go in, which was odd, as they were boarded up, and they looked like they could have big parties in them, but I didnt think much of it.They wanted to put very, very limited camera coverage on the main house itself.

The New York Times reported over the summer that Epstein allegedly wanted to turn his ranch into a place where he would impregnate vast numbers of women in what the Times described as transhumanism, which critics have likened transhumanism to a modern-day version of eugenics, the discredited field of improving the human race through controlled breeding.

Once, at a dinner at Mr. Epsteins mansion on Manhattans Upper East Side, Mr. Lanier said he talked to a scientist who told him that Mr. Epsteins goal was to have 20 women at a time impregnated at his 33,000-square-foot Zorro Ranch in a tiny town outside Santa Fe. Mr. Lanier said the scientist identified herself as working at NASA, but he did not remember her name, the Times reported. According to Mr. Lanier, the NASA scientist said Mr. Epstein had based his idea for a baby ranch on accounts of the Repository for Germinal Choice, which was to be stocked with the sperm of Nobel laureates who wanted to strengthen the human gene pool.

Epstein was arrested by federal law enforcement officials on sex trafficking charges in early July after returning to the United States and subsequently committed suicide in a New York City prison approximately a month later.

When asked for comment by The Daily Mail, the Clintons pointed to a statement that they released over the summer which deniedhe had ever visited any of Epsteins residences, apart from once at Epsteins home in New York City.

For Oakland University voice students, the human voice is more than just a way to communicate its also a precious instrument that must be maintained in order for them to continue sharing their passion for performing.

Voices are like feet in a way no one thinks much about their feet until they have a problem with them, but when they do, it suddenly becomes all they can think about, said John-Paul White, a distinguished professor of music at Oakland University. Its much the same with our voice. We take it for granted until it doesnt work right, and then we realize how very important it is.

How much more so for a performer, especially a professional whose living depends on their voice, White added. Maintaining vocal health is so much easier than having to fix a problem once is has occurred.

Dr. Drake Dantzler, associate professor of music at OU, agreed.

For any singer, their body is their instrument, Dantzler said. Proper health and vocal maintenance is important for successful singing and performing. We teach our students to maintain proper hydration, to avoid diuretics, to avoid smoking and second hand smoke, and to keep their bodies healthy.

Beyond those baseline lifestyle choices, we also work to create a vocal routine that establishes the habits for vocal longevity. Those exercises are based around established vocal science, and new research is emerging all the time.

This past summer, Dantzler and his wife, Dr. Alta Dantzler, an assistant professor of music at OU, participated in the National Center for Voice & Speech (NCVS) Summer Vocology Institute at the University of Utah, where they completed the first part of a three-part certification.

Vocology is the study of the habituation of the human voice, or how we use our voices for singing, Drake Dantzler said. It contains detailed studies in vocal health, anatomy, physics and applied practice.

Recently, more than 40 Oakland University voice students had an opportunity to learn more about their own vocal health when Dr. Adam Rubin and Dr. Juliana Codino from the Lakeshore Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Center treated them to a free baseline videostroboscopy on Nov. 11.

Videostroboscopy is an examination that uses high-speed light flashes that enable the scope (camera) to see the vocal folds in slow motion, White said. The vocal folds vibrate very quickly, much too fast for the naked eye to see. For example, at the pitch A 440 they vibrate 440 times per second. Stroboscopy enables the laryngologist to see the condition of the vocal cords in much greater detail.

Dantzler called the procedure a tremendously valuable tool for performers.

All performers, like any athlete, will experience some form of distress during their career, he said. By having a baseline stroboscope, the doctor that evaluates their vocal folds will be able to make a much more detailed analysis of the chord movement, and hence a more accurate diagnosis. To be able to provide this to our students, free of charge, is a wonderful opportunity, and we thank Lakeshore ENT for their expertise and time.

Caroline Roberts, a senior vocal performance major with a pre-med concentration, was among the OU students who underwent the procedure on Nov. 11.

It was fascinating to see how my own vocal cords operate, along with the amazing technology used to track vocal health, she said. This visit was especially exciting for me because I hope to be a laryngologist in the future. I believe my education as a vocal performance student will set me apart in this field, since I can empathize with my future patients.

Also in November, several OU voice students had an opportunity to visit the Gross Anatomy Lab in Hannah Hall, where they were able to view an excised human larynx, as well as breathing musculature, with Dr. Rebecca Pratt, a professor of anatomy in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

The anatomy lab was a remarkable opportunity for our students to gain a detailed idea of the physiology of the human voice, Dantzler said. While our students have seen models and drawings, there is no replacement for a physical larynx.

The students excitement and wonder was palpable, and there was no question that high level comprehension was present, he said. Students were connecting questions and ideas from their Voice Tech classes, as well as gaining a broader understanding of the instructions they receive in lesson.

Voice student Gillian Tackett, who visited the anatomy lab on Nov. 12, said the experience was amazing.

To be honest, I wasnt sure how I would feel being in a room with deceased donors and looking at body parts, but being able to see and even touch the parts of the body that are extremely vital to what we do as singers was life changing, she said. When I was holding a human larynx in my hands, I realized that this might be the closest I would ever get to really touching my instrument.

For performers, maintaining that instrument their voice is critically important.

Vocal health begins with awareness, Tackett said. Once we have that knowledge, we can begin to properly use and maintain a healthy voice. Here at Oakland, were very fortunate to have voice faculty who are so supportive and eager to help us learn every aspect of what it means to be a singer and that has to include vocal health.

More than 40 scientists and researchers from across the United States including one from Purdue University are looking for dogs to participate the national study of the general health and wellness of dogs.

The Dog Aging Project will be looking at dogs of all breeds and mixes from across the nation. This is the first major longitudinal study involving dogs, and it's scheduled to last at least 10 years.

We are going to look at a lot of different aspects of dogs lives that affect their health and longevity, says Audrey Ruple, a veterinary epidemiologist at Purdue.

Dogs are good models for humans, she says. They have similar genetics, share our environment, and they also have similar diseases and health issues. We will be asking, How do dogs age healthfully? in order to help better understand how we can age healthfully, too.

Dogs of all age ranges, breeds and sizes are eligible to participate in the study. Owners go online to register their dogs, then create a personal profile to track health, home life, diet, environment and lifestyle.

Dogs will need to make regular veterinarian visits every year. If a dog is assigned to a specific group, the owners may get a kit for their veterinarian to collect blood, urine or other samples during the annual visit.

Participation is voluntary and there is no cost to participate.

Its important to get dogs from all parts of the U.S. because of the different environmental factors present, Ruple said. And were trying to find the oldest dog in America, as well.

All dogs registered will be eligible to participate in various studies. The group conducted a soft launch with 4,500 dogs registered earlier this fall. Recently, the researchers reached 75,000 dogs for the study.

Our study population just keeps growing and growing and growing, Ruple said.

Researchers hope to find out more details on how genetics, demographics and environmental factors such as chemical exposures and noise pollution impact health and longevity.

Ruple says one goal of the study is to not just improve the health and longevity of dogs, but also extend those findings to improve human health. By studying aging in dogs, we hope to learn how to better match human health span to life span so that we can all live longer, healthier lives, Ruple said.

Funding for the Dog Aging Project comes from the National Institute of Aging, a part of the National Institutes of Health, as well as from private donations.

Cycling Without Age Gives Seniors Access to Biking in Cities Around the Globe – Next City

When Ole Kassow was three, his father was diagnosed with MS. We couldnt do the same things that other fathers and sons, we couldnt fish or play soccer, Kassow recalls. But he was really good at putting a positive spin on many things. We invented imaginary superhero glasses wed just turn our thumbs and fingers into little glasses and wed go around and Id pull him in his wheelchair with my bike. In many ways, thats where the seed for Cycling Without Age, a non-profit that uses tri-shaw bikes to take seniors living in care facilities out for rides in cities across the world, was first planted.

What started with Kassow in Copenhagen in August of 2012 has since blossomed into a global network of more than 1,643 Cycling Without Age chapters in 42 countries, including over 300 chapters and counting in the U.S. With my dad, I saw what it does to a person when you lose mobility, Kassow says, noting that many people lose friends when theyre no longer able to engage in the activities they once loved.

After seeing an elderly man sitting on a bench one August day, Kassow got to thinking how much mobility and access to community he could provide to seniors through something as simple as a bike ride. I was dedicated to seeing this man back on a bike. I hired this old tri-shaw and showed up at a care home and began taking elders out for rides, Kassow says. It wasnt exactly cycling: The seniors dont pedal or steer, as those tasks are left up to a volunteer. But the riders get all of the adventure, freedom, and wind in their hair that a traditional bike ride provides.

Kassow quickly saw a slew of unanticipated benefits as well. Seniors who were described as loners who had all but given up on talking suddenly became chatty with everyone from the staff member accompanying them to their bike driver once again as the world became exciting again from their three-wheeled perch. I think what it does is that it allows people to get access to relationships again, Kassow says, musing on the fact that there isnt anything in the [UNs] human rights charter about relationships, even though I just read a book by Susan Pinker that talked about the important role social relationships play in longevity and happiness.

Kassow has since come to see relationships as something of a human right that his organization works to restore through bike rides, an idea that the city of Copenhagen was eager to support. The city funded Kassows first five bikes, a boon because the tri-shaw bikes essentially pedicabs where the seat is in front of the cyclist, rather than behind the organization relies on can cost $7,000 $10,000. In April of 2013, Kassow hosted a joint ride where everyone, regardless of age or mobility, was invited. Over 100 people showed up. It was a cold, clear, frosty day and it was fantastic, he recalls. A lot of people who came said that they wanted to join as volunteers. From there it was a matter of experimenting to figure out how it was going to work.

Largely through word of mouth, the program spread to different care homes across Copenhagen and eventually to different cities as well. Kassow eventually developed a train the trainers methodology so that each new chapter would be able to support the development of other chapters without requiring Kassows direct involvement.

In late 2014 Kassow was invited to give a TED Talk in Copenhagen. Thats when the Cycling Without Age really began to spread, leading to something like 10 new chapters popping up over the course of just a few months. This was also when Kassow left his consulting business to focus on Cycling Without Age full time.

Chapters, like Kalynn McLains in Meridian, Idaho, are still popping up today.

What started as an adventure in testing out electric bikes with her mother in law in October 2017 ended with the duo stumbling across a chapter kickoff in nearby Eagle, Idaho. The Eagle chapter didnt take off, despite having already acquiring a tri-shaw. The woman eventually donated it to McLain. It kind of fell into my lap. I hadnt intended to start a chapter, but I couldnt say no, she says.

With the hardest part acquiring the tri-shaw behind her, McLain set out to establish her chapter by filing with the state and getting logistics like an insurance policy in order. In April of this year McLain began offering rides in partnership with a local assisted living facility.

Once I started working with them, other facilities started asking about it. What I ended up doing was working through the parks and rec department to be able to ride in parks and on pathways around the city, she says. McLain and her stable of volunteers now meet seniors shuttled from their facilities at parks where the rides take place. They get outdoors and it gets them talking to people of different generations and telling their stories, she says.

Currently its McLains handful of volunteers who give most of the rides while she hangs back.

Across the 109 rides that the Meridian chapter gave this season, McLain is most pleased by the seniors who come back time and time again, especially largely nonverbal residents from memory care facilities who have burst into words on their ride.

I had one ride, McLain says, where the staff was asking the resident if she was enjoying the ride and she suddenly said, Yes! Im loving it! The staff member turned to me and was like, Did you hear that?! It was the first time that resident had spoken in some time, all inspired by the ride Cycling Without Age was able to provide.

The L Word: Nobody Rocks a Power Suit and Cufflinks Like Jennifer Beals – IndieWire

Shane may be the resident heartthrob of The L Word, but no character more embodies Showtimes Los Angeles-set lesbian melodrama than Bette Porter. Accomplished, stubborn, magnetic, and self-destructive, Bette instantly became the archetypical 21st century power dyke. She fills out a Jil Sander power suit as confidently as she tops her pregnant wife; casually drops names of the myriad women artists in her private collection; and now added to her resume for the shows next iteration, The L Word: Generation Q runs a savvy mayoral campaign. (She is also, unofficially, the obvious avatar for the shows creator Ilene Chaiken.)

Of course, there would be no Bette Porter without Jennifer Beals. A luminous and deeply intelligent actor, Beals naturalism, humor, and deeply felt performance grounded the original series, spearheading its ascension beyond mere sexy soap opera, and cementing its place as the most influential piece of lesbian culture of the 21st century.

The role has defined the last decade of Beals career much in the way her breakout role in 1983s Flashdance shaped her early work. Its kind of crazy, Beals told IndieWire in a recent phone interview. I was thinking about it the other day, and its like I just wouldnt stop. You cant make me stop. Im just going to keep going.

To what does she attribute such longevity?

Persistence. Really persistent. I guess I am blindly stubborn sometimes, she said. Its like a Marine, where you just put one foot in front of the other to get up the mountain. Or a monkand its only recently that Ive started to look up the mountain top and go, Hey, let me maybe predetermine where I would like to go.'

The realization led her to spearhead the return of The L Word, shepherding The L Word: Generation Q to the air. As an executive producer on the new series, (along with fellow returning cast members Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig), Beals suggested plot points, brought on new showrunner Marja-Lewis Ryan, reviewed cuts, and advised on casting the new generation. Rounding out the trifecta of the shows most popular characters, Hailey and Moennig also reprise their roles as Alice and Shane, respectively.

Honestly, it was such a surreal moment being back on the set with Kate [Moennig] and Leisha [Hailey], Beals said. We all shared an office and checked in with each other all the time. [It] was so much fun getting to work with them as executive producers. I always knew they were amazing actors, but theyre also brilliant human beings and they have a brilliant sense of story and music. It was very, very exciting to be working with them in that new capacity.

The reunion was just as fun for the actresses as it is sure to be for the viewers.

Whenever we had scenes together, which was every episode, wed go to Kates house and rehearse and then wed all have dinner together. So its like family dinner every Sunday night.

Returning the role she left behind over 10 years ago was also a surreal experience. But there was one thing that helped Beals lock right back into character as Bette. (Its a feeling many fans have probably experienced themselves.)

Re-exploring the character in those early wardrobe fittings, we were trying to think how much does the style change in 10 years? And nothing was working, nothing was working, Beals recalled. And I said Can I just have a power suit and my cufflinks? I just really need to go back to that. And as soon as I literally put the cufflink in the hole, I just went Ah, yes, yes. Okay. I completely remember this. This is waking up my DNA and this makes sense now.'

Ten years may have passed, but the real question is has Bette, who nearly torpedoed her marriage with an affair with a carpenter, learned from her past mistakes?

Oh, no, apparently not, Beals laughed. I just thought to myself Okay, here we go again.'

For a vegan diet to be healthy and complete, you really need to understand your food – ABC News

In a world where "meat-free meat" sits next to the beef sausages in the supermarket and ordering an almond milk latte brings nary a flicker to a barista's eye, the once-fringe vegan movement seems to have gone mainstream.

For the uninitiated, followers of a vegan diet eschew all animal products, including dairy, eggs, honey and, of course, meat.

So for an eating pattern that cuts out so many foods traditionally considered essential, is it possible for a vegan diet to meet all your nutritional needs?

Yes, says Clare Collins, professor of nutrition at the University of Newcastle but it requires you to understand food better than the average omnivore, or even vegetarian.

Here are four main nutrients to look out for.

Let's start with this one, because vitamin B12 is something we humans can really only get via animal foods such as meat, fish, dairy and eggs or in the form of supplements.

It's an important vitamin too, essential for making DNA, fatty acids, red blood cells and chemicals called neurotransmitters which help to pass signals around the brain.

"That's the really big one. You don't want to end up with a B12 deficiency," Professor Collins said.

B12 deficiency manifests at first as vague but unpleasant symptoms like heart palpitations, light-headedness, tiredness and bowel or bladder changes, so it's important to keep on top of it.

In severe cases, it can progress to mood changes like depression and paranoia, and nerve problems like numbness, pain and loss of taste and smell.

While trace amounts of B12 have been found in some plant foods such as mushrooms, fermented soybeans and things that have been contaminated by soil or insects, if you're following a vegan diet you should be looking to supplements or fortified foods to ensure you're getting enough.

It's often added to non-dairy milks, but not all, so check the label.

Most people know about the importance of calcium for your bones, but it also plays a role in other parts of your body, including your heart, muscles and nerves.

What's more, your bones actually act as a calcium bank, so if you're not getting enough from your diet, your body will make withdrawals from that bank, which can affect your bone health.

Dairy is often touted as being an important source of calcium, but it's by no means the only source. Plenty of plant-based foods contain it, including some tofu and some nuts, legumes and seeds.

But interestingly, vegans and vegetarians often need even more calcium than omnivores, because some plant foods have chemicals that make it harder for your body to access it.

For example, spinach and beans contain oxalic acid, and some grains, nuts and legumes contain phytic acid, which both interfere with calcium absorption.

You can bolster your calcium intake with fortified plant milks and fortified breakfast cereals again, check the label to make sure the product you are choosing is actually fortified, because not all are.

Iron is used inside your red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body, so a deficiency can leave you feeling lethargic and tired, as well as lowering your immunity.

While omnivores usually get their iron delivered ready-to-use, via red meat, plant-based sources of iron require your body to do a bit more work.

You can help your body absorb your plant-based iron, found in foods like legumes and beans, by eating it at the same time as vitamin C.

That can be as simple as putting veggies like red capsicum and broccoli next to the lentils on your dinner plate.

"The other thing you can do is not have any cups of tea straight after meals because the tannins and the phytates in the tea actually interfere with the absorption of the iron," Professor Collins said.

Combining plant-based iron sources like chickpeas with vitamin C-containing veggies like capsicum helps your body better absorb the iron.

Iodine helps your thyroid to function that little gland in your neck that controls your metabolism, among other things.

Seafood is a source of iodine, and it's also found in some dairy products in Australia, but the main source of iodine for people who avoid animal products is via iodised salt, which is used in commercial breads and some breakfast cereals.

As for some of the other essential nutrients, the symptoms of deficiency can be vague but hint at something serious, Professor Collins said.

"How do you know if you're iodine deficient? It's things like tiredness, weakness, lethargy, and then other things like constipation, heartbeat [changes], facial puffiness and so on."

Iodine deficiency is a particularly big deal for women of childbearing age, as it can affect the brain development of babies during pregnancy and increase the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth.

Pregnant women have other specific nutritional needs beyond the four mentioned here, and so do children. So talk to your doctor if your kids are on a vegan diet or you're planning to become pregnant.

And for people who follow vegan diets for a very long time, there are other nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, that can become an issue.

If you're following a vegan diet, its worth mentioning it to your doctor so they can check for deficiencies.

While most people who choose vegan diets do so because they want to minimise harm to animals or cut down on their environmental impact, others talk about the potential health benefits of being entirely plant-based.

The recent documentary The Game Changers promotes a diet free of animal products as performance-enhancing and implies it might even be the optimal diet for humans.

So ... could a vegan diet be even better for you than a healthy omnivorous one?

It's not as simple as that, Professor Collins explained.

There are plenty of animal-free products that are highly processed, high in salt and fat and low in other essential nutrients.

"People are getting a message that, hey, you're supposed to be a little bit vegan now, and they're just buying these products that are appearing without thinking through what it has really taken to manufacture those things.

"The lazy way to be a vegan is to just leave the meat out and leave the dairy products out and make no effort to bring back in the foods that you need to replace the nutrients that you're missing out on."

So while it's certainly possible to have a healthy, complete vegan diet, it's not the only healthy way to eat, Professor Collins said.

If you're looking for a guide, she recommends the Australian Government's Eat For Health website.

"I know it's boring but it actually does outline how many serves of the five food groups you need, based on age and sex, to meet your nutrient requirements.

"You do not have to be a vegan to eat healthy.

"You can have a normal, healthy vegetarian pattern and unhealthy vegan eating pattern and you can have an unhealthy omnivore eating pattern."

There are definitely things that most of us could learn from veganism though, especially when it comes to plant-based "whole foods".

Many vegan protein sources, such as pulses and nuts, do double time by also being rich sources of fibre and healthy fats.

"One of the movements that I think can benefit everyone is what's called flexitarian, which is like being a part-time vegetarian or even a part-time vegan," Professor Collins said.

"So a few days a week, you are consciously trying to boost your intake of vegetable sources of nutrients."

Swapping out a few meals a week with whole-food vegan protein sources is not going to do you harm and will probably do you good.

"It's really about stepping back and saying, hey, what are the things I'm eating? Am I eating nutrient rich foods? And am I not going overboard on ultra-processed junk food?"

Plus, if your impact on animals and the environment is important to you goals that motivate many people to go vegan in the first place then going some of the way is arguably better than going none of the way.

An array of platinum nanostraws can be used to deliver molecules to cells or sample their contents.

Hollow nanosized needles, or nanostraws, are a promising tool for opening up tiny, temporary holes in cell membranes to deliver molecules or sample a cells contents. Nanostraws could also deliver gene editors into cells for immunotherapy, cutting the need to use costly viruses for the job. But making nanostraws requires expensive manufacturing equipment in a clean room facility, and using nanostraws often requires applying a high voltage in order to open up the cell membrane. Now, researchers have developed a more affordable fabrication approach that can be done in an ordinary lab. Whats more, the new nanostraws are conductive, thus lowering the amount of voltage needed to levels less likely to damage cells (ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2019, DOI: 10.1021/acsami.9b15619).

Researchers made earlier iterations of nanostraws with atomic layer deposition (ALD), which grows thin films of materials such as metal oxides one layer of atoms at a time. In their new approach, Xi Xie of Sun Yat-Sen University and colleagues replaced ALD with electroplating, a simple process which uses an electrical potential to deposit ions in a solution onto a surface.

They first sputtered a thin layer of gold on the bottom surface of a polycarbonate template containing an array of pores in order to make a conductive base layer. Then they electroplated platinum, gold, or the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)three common materials used in electrophysiology studiesfrom the top. The materials lined the pores of the template, creating the hollow nanostraws. The team then used mechanical polishing and oxygen plasma etching to remove the polycarbonate template, revealing an array of vertical nanostraws, each a few hundred nanometers in diameter. According to Xie, their method can work with templates of various pore sizes or pore densities, or with other plating materials.

Ciro Chiappini, a nanomedicine researcher at Kings College London, says this study is a needed and significant step toward developing affordable nanostraws.

Using a representative platinum nanostraw array, Xie and colleagues demonstrated that they could deliver a fluorescent dye into cultured human cells and extract intracellular materials to examine how the levels of an enzyme changed over time.

The conductivity of the new nanostraws allowed the researchers to open tiny pores in the cell membrane by applying a voltage of only 35 V, a safer range for cells compared with 1020 V needed when using nonconductive nanostraws.

These straws could make cellular treatments such as CAR-T therapy faster, safer, and cheaper, says Nicholas A. Melosh, a materials scientist at Stanford University who has done nanostraw research. Typical immunotherapy delivers therapy to a patients immune cells using viruses, which is costly and carries the risk of dangerous immune responses once the cells are put back into the patient, he says. Nanostraws could potentially deliver the necessary therapies to cells without the need for viruses.

Protein-Protected Metal Nanoclusters That Behave Like Natural Enzymes – Advanced Science News

Metal nanoclusters, made up of several to one hundred metal atoms (e.g., Au, Ag, Cu, Pt), are a novel class of intermediate between metal atoms and nanoparticles. As their size (<2 nm) borders on the Fermi wavelength of electrons, metal nanoclusters possess strong photoluminescence in comparison with large metal nanoparticles (>2 nm). This, combined with tunable fluorescence emissions, high photostability, good quantum yields and facile synthesis, make them excellent fluorescent labels for biomedical applications.

However, the reduction of metal ions in liquid solution during synthesis usually causes large nanoparticles rather than small metal nanocluster formation because of their tendency to aggregate. In light of this, proteins whose thiol, amino, and carboxyl groups have a strong affinity for metal atoms are typically used to stabilize metal nanoclusters to protect them from aggregationthese proctected clusters are commonly called protein-protected metal nanoclusters.

Protein-protected metal nanoclusters have excellent biocompatibility and have received considerable attention as a luminescent probe in a number of fields such as biosensing, bioimaging, and imaging-guided therapy. However, apart from unique optical properties, protein-protected metal nanoclusters also possess interesting biological properties such as enzyme-like activity similar to that of natural enzymes; until recently, this has been an overlooked quality that is starting to shine in basic research and practical applications.

Nanozymes is a new termed used to refer to nanomaterials with intrinsic enzyme-like activity. Since professor Yan and coworkers first discovered that nanoparticleswhich are traditionally assumed to be inertpossessed intrinsic enzyme-like activity, a substantial amount of work has focused on further developing and harnessing the advantageous properties of nanozymes, which include high catalytic ability, high stability, and low cost. Nowadays, more than 540 kinds of nanomaterials, which possess intrinsic enzymatic activity, have been reported from 350 laboratories in 30 countries and have been used in biological analysis, environmental treatment, as antibacterial agents, cancer therapy, and antioxidation therapy.

In a recent study published in WIREs Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology, Professor Xiyun Yan and Kelong Fan explore the newly developing field of biologically active protein-protected metal nanoclusters, namely those that possess peroxidase, oxidase, and catalase activities, and are consequently used for biological analysis and environmental treatment.

An intriguing example of this is bovine serum albumin-protected gold (Au) nanoclusters, which exhibit peroxidase enzymatic activity to catalyze the oxidation of colored organic substrates, which is currently carried out using natural peroxidases. This method showed an advantage over the natural peroxidase-based methods because bovine serum albumin-protected Au nanoclusters exhibited higher robustness and retained enzymatic activity over a wide range of pH and temperatures. In another example, lysozyme-protected platinum (Pt) nanoclusters exhibit oxidase enzymatic activity which has been applied to the oxidative degradation of pollutants, such as methylene blue in lake water.

The proteins themselves not only provide protection and stabilization during synthesis, but can also provide a myriad of other functions to the nanoclusters. Proteins have been shown to enable in vivo applications because of their enhanced biocompatibility. In fact, a protease-responsive sensor for in vivo disease monitoring was designed by utilizing the peroxidase activity of peptide-protected Au nanoclusters and their ultra-small size dependent tumor accumulation and renal clearance properties.

The sensor was developed using peptides which are the substrates/targets of disease related proteases as protective ligands to synthesis the Au nanoclusters nanozymes, which were then conjugated to a carrier. After reaching the site of disease, the sensor was disassembled in response to the dysregulated protease and the liberated Au nanoclusters were filtered through the kidneys and into urine to produce a rapid and sensitive colorimetric readout of diseases state. By employing different enzymatic substrate as protective ligands for Au nanoclusters, this modular approach could enable the rapid detection of a diverse range of diseases with dysregulated protease activities such as cancer, inflammation, and thrombosis.

These findings have extended the horizon of protein-protected metal nanoclusters properties as well as their application in various fields, says Kelong Fan. Furthermore, in the field of nanozymes, protein-protected metal nanoclusters have emerged as an outstanding new addition. Due to their ultra-small size (<2 nm), they usually have higher catalytic activity, more suitable size for in vivo application, better biocompatibility and photoluminescence in comparison with large size nanozymes. We think that ultra-small nanozymes based on protein-protected MNCs are on the verge of attracting great interest across various disciplines and will stimulate research in the fields of nanotechnology and biology.

Despite the advantages and advancedprogress in the development of protein-protected metal nanoclusters asultra-small nanozymes, there are still some challenges that need to be addressedin future work.

First, most researchers still only rely on bovine serum albumin as both the reducing agent and stabilizer. Since we know that protein-protected metal nanoclusters may retain the bioactivity of the protein ligand, it is necessary to explore methods for synthesizing other new protein-protected metal nanoclusters, which will widen the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of protein-protected metal nanoclusters nanozymes.

Second, there are six types of catalytic reactions in nature: oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, isomerases, ligases, and lyases. Thus far, although many protein-protected metal nanoclusters have demonstrated enzyme activities they all are oxidoreductase-like activities such as peroxidase, oxidase, and catalase. Therefore, there is a ample room to develop other types of nanozymes based on protein-protected metal nanoclusters. In this regard, more understanding of the structures and catalytic mechanisms of protein-protected metal nanoclusters is required in addition to the deeper understanding on natural enzymes themselves.

Third, a considerable number of reports have suggested that ultra-small nanozymes based on protein-protected metal nanoclusters are promising tools for biological analysis. However, little is known about the therapeutic function of these ultra-small clusters in vivo despite their advantages of suitable size and good biocompatibility. It is well known that peroxidase, oxidase, and catalase are main enzymes in biological systems involved in the maintenance of redox homeostasis. Thus, more attention should be paid to the usage of these ultra-small nanozymes based on protein-protected metal nanoclusters as bio-catalysts in various human diseases involved in redox dysregulation such as cancer, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases. It is also possible to employ the products of redox nanozymes to treat other diseases, for example, use the toxic hydroxyl radicals produced by peroxidase nanozymes to treat bacterial infection.

Overall, there is still much room for future research and application of ultra-small nanozymes based on protein-protected metal nanoclusters. It is expected that the enzyme-like activity of protein-protected metal nanoclusters will certainly attract broader interests across various disciplines and stimulate research in the fields of nanotechnology and biology, making these emerging ultra-small nanozymes become novel multifunctional nanomaterials for a number of biomedical applications.

Veganism won’t save the world from environmental ruin, researchers warn – New York Post

Heres a red-hot take on red meat: Going vegan wont save the environment.

Livestock farmers are being unfairly demonized by vegans and environmental advocates, experts from the University of Edinburgh and Scotlands Rural College told their peers at a panel in London, the Telegraph reports.

The shocking stance comes despite the urging of hoards of climate scientists who say eating a plant-based diet is one of the best ways to curtail our current environmental crisis.

According to the Scottish scientists, meat production isnt the culprit of global warming in fact, breeders are producing cattle that are less harmful to the environment. Also, they argue, meat is critical for the development of children worldwide, and fewer livestock farms wouldnt necessarily mean more sustainable land use.

Often the argument is made that going vegan would minimize land use, and the modeling studies that have been done demonstrate that thats not the case, said Geoff Simm, director of Global Academy Agriculture and Food Security at Edinburgh. We feel that while livestock production has a range of economic, social and environmental costs and benefits, the costs have perhaps been receiving far more attention recently than some of the benefits.

A primary benefit of livestock production, according to Simm, is that even small amounts of animal-sourced food have a really important effect on the [cognitive and physical] development of children, thanks to the high concentration of protein and bioavailable micronutrients in meat.

Mike Coffey of Rural College slammed veganism as completely unnecessary.

If everybody went vegan, it would be devastating for the UK environment, he said. Animals bred for food help boost biodiversity.

Coffey points to research being done to develop genetically modified cows that would grow faster and eat less, and emit 30 percent less methane than conventional cows.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the cultivation of animals such as cattle produces almost 1/3 of [all] emissions from the agriculture economic sector, which is responsible for 9% of the planets overall greenhouse gas output. Furthermore, they add that manure management on these farms accounts for nearly a fifth of the farm sectors greenhouse gas footprint.

Coffey hopes that farmers in the UK and around the world will soon have the option to invest in more efficient cattle.

By next year farmers will be able to select bulls whose [offspring] consume less feed for the amount of milk they produce, said Coffey. Where we go next is can we actually measure methane emissions from groups of animals?

Edinburgh University professor Andrea Wilson added that the environmental impact of veganism has not been scrutinized to the same degree.

We know a lot about the livestock sector because people have looked at it. We actually know very little about the vegan sector, she said. The danger is we demonize one and jump too quickly to the other.

London tops list of world’s most vegan-friendly cities – The Guardian

London has been named the most vegan-friendly city in the world for the second year running by online vegan restaurant guide HappyCow. Berlin, New York and Los Angeles also rank high in the 2019 list with Bangkok in the top 10 for the first time.

Home to 152 vegan restaurants citywide including eateries serving plant-based takes on fried chicken, sushi and pizza Londons meat-free scene has gone mainstream in recent years. In 2017 it was the first city on the HappyCow list to reach 100 completely vegan restaurants perhaps not surprising for a city with its own vegan hair salon.

The HappyCow list ranks cities according to three factors: the number of vegan restaurants in a five-mile radius within the most vegan-restaurant-dense area in each city (London has 125); the number of restaurants with vegan, vegetarian or veggie menu options in the same five-mile radius; and HappyCows impression of the overall vegan-friendliness of each city.

Veganism continues to become a mainstream lifestyle in London and this city takes veganism to a new level, said Ken Spector, co-author of the HappyCow list.

Some of HappyCows favourites include PickyWops, Purezza and Young Vegans Pizza Shop (formerly Death By Pizza) all examples of the citys flourishing vegan pizza scene. It also references the worlds first vegan chicken shop, The Temple of Seitan, Japanese food at Itadakizen, and Caribbean-inspired cuisine at Rogue Vegan.

As well as its restaurants, HappyCow also recommends London for its abundance of vegan-friendly stalls, bakeries, cafes and smoothie bars and the UKs first plant-based cheese shop, La Fauxmagerie. Non-food favourites include shops such as clothing brand The Third Estate and hair salon The Rabbit Hole Vegan Hair Parlour.

According to The Vegan Society, the number of vegans in the UK quadrupled between 2014 and 2019 to 600,000. At the current growth rate, it predicts vegans and vegetarians will make up a quarter of the population by 2025, and flexitarians just under half.

Of all our 20 years, this past year has seen the most dramatic growth in vegan interest, said Eric Brent, CEO and founder of HappyCow.

Jasmine Briones was nervous during her first vegan Thanksgiving. She wasnt sure how her family of omnivores would react to the plant-based Thanksgiving foods she had made for them.

It was 2012, Briones first year of veganism,which her parents thought was a phase, though it eventually led to her becoming theSweet Simple Vegan. She had done the best she could with the ingredients and recipes she had on hand for vegan biscuits, mashed potatoesand green bean casserole.

My parents didnt really enjoy it, but I could do a much better jobnow, Briones said. Nowadays, theres a plethora of vegan products and recipes to help make Thanksgiving food vegan.

While strictly vegan Thanksgivings probably wont slow the demand for turkey anytime soon, interest in plant-based foods and Thanksgiving recipes has grown in recent years, and companies are responding to demand.

Krissi Vandenberg is the executive director at the Vegan Awareness Foundation, an organization that offers certification for a range of vegan products. To receive certification, a manufacturer must prove that their product contains absolutely no animal-based ingredients and that it does not use animal products in processing. For example, sugar manufacturers often use cow bone char to remove impurities from raw sugar. While it may be sparkly white, and perfect for an omnivores cranberry sauce, such sugar cannot be considered vegan by the Vegan Awareness Foundation.

According to Vandenberg, when the organization started certifying products in the year 2000, it was mostly approving snack foods for a strictly vegan audience. That trend has since changed rapidly.

If someone has spent most of their life looking for a piece of meat, its less of a sacrifice to eat something that looks and tastes kind of like meat.

Over the past five to seven years, the consumer base of many vegan products has expanded to include the vegan curious. Companies are noticing this shiftand have begun seeking certification for more savory and substantial foods, such as frozen entrees, soupsand pantry staples, the kinds that could help make a Thanksgiving meal, according to Vandenberg.

While Briones admits that her first vegan Thanksgiving wasnt exactly a hit, she said that later attempts have tasted much better, thanks in part to the introduction of new vegan productsand improvements in ingredients like vegan cream cheese, which Briones mixes into vegan mashed potatoes to make them more decadent.

Since the Foundation began issuing certification, it has worked with over 1,000 different companies and approved several thousand products, according to Vandenberg. This growth is completely unprecedented.

Were seeing right now a lot of things we never envisioned, Vandenberg said. Things have really just taken off.

This trend has made vegan Thanksgiving foods more accessible for those looking to add more plant-based dishes to their holiday meals, and a number of companies have started in recent years to fill that need.

No Evil Foods is one of these companies. Though the company has been operating since 2014, theyve recently expanded production of their plant-based turkey roast made from wheat proteindue to overwhelming demand. No Evil Foods named it The Pardon after the presidential tradition of pardoning a turkey from slaughter every Thanksgiving, and a portion of sales is donated to Full Circle Farm Sanctuary in Warm Springs, Georgia, which takes care of rescued farm animals. So far, No Evil Foods has already an 1100% increase in sales on The Pardon from 2018.

The market is so right, said Sadrah Schadel, co-founder of No Evil Foods. Plant-based eating is clearly on the rise, and consumers are looking for more deliciously meaty ways to celebrate that align with their desire to eat healthier, be kinderand make positive environmental choices.

Meal kit companies are getting in on vegan Thanksgiving as well. Purple Carrot, which exclusively sells vegan meal kits, launched its own Thanksgiving box this fall. The kit, which includes the ingredients and recipes for: Hasselback butternut squash, ciabatta bread stuffing, roasted brussels sprouts, cranberry citrus cakeand classic gravy, has already sold out. According to Ashley Hocking, head of marketing at Purple Carrot, the idea for a Thanksgiving box sprung directly from customer feedback.

There is a growing interest in plant-based foods overall, which is very encouraging for brands in this space, Hocking said. Sales of plant-based versions of traditional animal protein products have risen by double digits over the past year.

And then theres Tofurky, the largest independent producer of plant-based proteins in the U.S., which has been selling its plant-based turky roasts since 1995. According to company president and CEO Jaime Athos, Tofurky will sell about 400,000 of its trademark roasts this holiday season, while operating at full production capacity. Thats a steep jump from the 800 sold in 1995. Due to increasing demand over the years, Tofurky sold 5 million roasts from 1995 to 2018.

While vegan Thanksgiving foods have become more popular and more accessible in recent years, those who celebrated the first public vegan Thanksgiving in had to be a little more creative with their Thanksgiving menu. There was no version of The Pardon, no Thanksgiving meal kit, no Tofurky. But there were fruits and vegetables.

The vegan foods were always there, said Alex Hershaft, founder of the Farm Animal Rights Movement, or FARM. What youre seeing now in supermarkets is the result of greatly increased acceptance in plant-based eating.

Hershaft organized a Thanksgiving celebration in 1975, which he claims is the first of its kind, where about 40 to 50 vegans gathered at the Siddhartha vegetarian Indian restaurant in Washington, D.C. Hershaft, a vegetarian since 1961and a vegan since 1981, still prefers foods like lentils to plant-based meats, but he acknowledges that having the meat-like options is helpful in getting people to eat less meat or no meat at all.

Despite the recent surge in popularity of vegan Thanksgiving foods, turkey still dominates the Ameican plate. According to the National Turkey Federation, 44 million turkeys were bought and served for Thanksgiving 2017, a number roughly equivalent to the population of Argentina. Hershaft said he still feels rewarded by having been able to inspire interest in veganism over the past 44 years.

Some people feel that were not making enough progress, Hershaft said. But this is not just about plant-based Thanksgiving, its about the increased acceptance of plant-based eating altogether, and for that Im grateful.
