February 12, 2020 -Making improvements to public housing may not have an impact on any specific healthcare condition, but housing quality certainly does affect net quality of life, according to data published in the latest issue of Health Affairs.

The healthcare industry has become increasingly concerned with affordable housing in recent years, as industry experts tout the importance of the social determinants of health and access to affordable, quality, and stable housing. Leaders say that individuals experiencing homelessness have more difficulty managing chronic illness as well as a higher likelihood of incurring costly acute care crises.

To address this issue, many hospitals, health systems, and payers have invested billions of dollars into creating affordable housing units. The logic holds that improving access to quality housing will save the stakeholders in downstream healthcare costs.

But what of older affordable housing units that have been serving vulnerable populations for decades? How can addressing the quality, not necessarily the amount, of affordable housing units impact patient health?

This is a real and pressing problem, the researchers explained. Currently, about 1.1 affordable housing units are facing nearly $50 billion in capital needs, per estimates from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Conditions in these buildings including broken elevators, leaks, old heating systems, and lead paint exposurepotentially threaten the health of the roughly 2.3 million low-income children and adults who live in public and other HUD-assisted housing, the researchers said. Moreover, many of these units will deteriorate further and become uninhabitable unless they are renovated.

And while making these repairs may not have a measurable impact on any one healthcare condition, it could have a significant effect on tenants quality of life, a key measure in patient experience and wellness.

Looking at a case study in New York City, the researchers specifically found nominal change in individual outcomes or utilization for asthma, anxiety or depression, injury, hypertension in adults, and acute respiratory infection.

However, they did find improvements in disease burden for each of those diseases, excluding hypertension in adults. This finding illustrates an improvement in quality of life, which is essential on the road to patient wellness and healthy lifestyle.

The researchers specifically looked at a New York City Housing Authority move from back in 2015, during which the Housing Authority sold 50 percent stake in six delipidated housing units to two private real estate development groups, establishing a public-private partnership for housing.

Through the partnership, the housing units received a renovation, including improvements to elevators, stairway handrails, heating and hot water systems, emergency generators, and roofs. The project also tackled more cosmetic changes, such as bathroom and kitchen repairs complete with new appliances, window replacements, painting, and air conditioning units.

The public-private partnership also resulted in exterior improvements.

Finally, New York City Housing Authority relinquished building management responsibilities to the private real estate firms, which revamped rent collection and other management issues.

On the whole, these changes improved patient experiences, quality of life, and in some cases, health.

This pattern of findings was not surprising, since we were examining the impact of broad-based renovations not targeted to address any particular health conditions or populations, and we observed people for only three years after the renovation was completed, the researchers reported.

It is possible that over a longer period and with a larger sample, we might have seen a significant impact on individual diseases as well as larger impacts on overall disease burden.

Of note, measures about emergency department or hospital utilization remained largely unchanged, the team found.

Patterns of health system usesuch as the proportion of residents visiting the ED or hospital appeared to be less sensitive to the renovations than disease outcomes were, the team said. This may indicate that peoples manner of engaging with the health care system is persistent, even when their mix of exposures, conditions, and overall well-being changes.

These housing interventions also made an improvement with overall patient satisfaction with their housing options.

Compared to individuals living in nearby affordable housing complexes, more intervention patients said they would recommend their complex to a family or friend, 54 percent versus 83 percent, respectively. Only 18 percent of intervention residents reported plans to move, compared to 34 percent of those in nearby affordable housing complexes.

When you let rejection hold you back like this, though, it can wreak havoc on all aspects of your personal life. In fact, according to Leslie Becker-Phelps, Ph.D., psychologist and author of Bouncing Back from Rejection: Build the Resilience You Need to Get Back Up When Life Knocks You Down, dealing with rejection in unhealthy ways can not only negatively impact your personal relationships, but can even lead to debilitating conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Fortunately, though, there are ways you can deal with rejection that can help you come out of it stronger. Getting rejected doesn't have to be the end-all be-all, and the experience can actually help you in the long run to become more resilient in your life. So if you're wondering how to deal with rejection from friends, family, coworkers, or a crush, here are some of the best psychologist-approved tips and techniques to help you bounce back from the experience:

Before you learn how to deal with rejection in dating, at work, or in your home life, the first thing to remember is that there's a reason rejection stings so much and it's not because you're weak or too sensitive. In fact, there's an evolutionary reason why we desperately need other people to accept us: According to Lori Gottlieb, M.F.T., psychotherapist and author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, our need for connection traces way back to ancient history, when humans relied on being in groups to survive. "When somebody rejects us, there's a very primal piece to it, which is that it goes against everything we feel like we need for survival," Gottlieb explains.

Beyond an evolutionary standpoint, our response to rejection also depends on something called our attachment styles, or the models in which we develop our relationships with other people. People who interact with their caregivers in a healthy way as infants, Becker-Phelps says, usually develop a secure attachment style in which they view themselves as being worthy and lovable but those with insecure attachment styles come to generally view themselves as unlovable, unworthy, and inadequate. It's no wonder, then, that some of us have a harder time getting through rejection as Becker-Phelps explains, our need of connection is wired into us right from birth!

"In the immediate aftermath of a rejection, we're not really in that space to think about it because we're in so much pain," says Gottlieb. Anger and hurt will probably be your immediate reactions after a rejection, but contrary to popular belief, releasing your anger (for example, screaming or hitting a punching bag) doesn't help bring the negative emotion down in fact, it's likely to even increase it.

In these moments, Becker-Phelps says that self-care is truly important: Activities like exercising and going for a run, doing yoga or meditating are great ways to get in a balanced place, so you think more clearly about the situation instead of getting into the rut of emotional thinking. And if those activities aren't really your thing, try engaging in anything that makes you feel good and helps you calm down whether it's baking, taking a bath, or listening to music.

After you've taken some time to calm down and get grounded, it's important to pay attention to what you're feeling and a great way to do this is write it all down in a journal. One exercise you can do, says Becker-Phelps, is to write down all the emotions you're feeling and then pair them with the thoughts that are going with those emotions. "Just by doing that, you're getting some distance, and then you can cope with the rejection better, because you're not just all tangled up in it," she says.

And whenever you are paying attention to your emotions, remember that it's never helpful to feel like you shouldn't feel a certain way. "Your emotions are never right or wrong, they just are," notes Becker-Phelps.

Beyond simply acknowledging your emotions, try writing down some things that are positive about yourself in other words, come up with a list of some of your strengths and values, and start your morning off each day by reading them out loud to yourself. "This doesn't mean just talking yourself up, but thinking about what makes you, you," explains Becker-Phelps. By helping you hold onto the things that are a part of you, these self-affirmations will help you feel stronger just by recognizing who you really are and how you identify yourself, especially in the face of self-doubt that often comes with rejection.

When you're faced with a rejection of any type, one of the most important things is to remember that there's more to life than the one rejection from that one person or thing and that there are plenty of other people who are on your side. To remind yourself that you haven't been completely shunned by the world, spend some quality time with friends and family, and make sure that you're still feeling truly connected with other people around you. If you're trying to figure out how to deal with rejection from a crush, for instance, you might want to turn to your friends for moral support and some quality BFF time.

"Connection is so important because it reminds us of all the things that we can't remember in that moment: It reminds us of how lovable we are...that people care about us...that we're worthy," Gottlieb says.

Even if you can't actually spend time with a loved one at the moment, try taking some time to just think of someone who's important in your life. In fact, you can even find a picture of them preferably a photo of you two enjoying your time together and set some time to look at it each day while reminding yourself that this person supports you.

"Sometimes by repeating that and seeing the pictures, you start to take it inside and then you kind of carry it in your heart more strongly," says Becker-Phelps. "So when a difficult situation comes up and you feel rejected, you can go back to the image of that person even just in your mind and feel comforted by them because you've been practicing feeling comforted."

We tend to beat ourselves up over the things that might have led us to be rejected, but this habit inevitably causes us to feel worse. "The first thing a lot of people do when they get rejected is to be unkind to themselves, and they start coming up with all kinds of ideas about what's wrong with them," Gottlieb notes.

Instead of constantly thinking about what might have gone wrong and dwelling on these negative emotions (a process called rumination), Gottlieb recommends looking at the situation more objectively and asking yourself if there's anything you can learn from the experience and doing so with compassion towards yourself.

Whether you're trying to figure out how to deal with rejection from family or from coworkers, sometimes it's just everyday things in your home or work life that might influence how you respond to rejection maybe you didn't get enough sleep, or haven't been eating well lately. These things can definitely make it harder to handle rejection in a healthy way so one thing you can do to cope better is to work on leading a healthy lifestyle. That means eating well, exercising frequently, and staying hydrated, all of which can help you stay strong in the face of rejection. "The healthier your lifestyle, the more resources you have then to deal with difficult situations," notes Becker-Phelps.

If there's one important skill to learn from rejection, it's that you should never let it stop you from your future endeavors getting rejected is just an inevitable part of life, after all, and e
very single successful person has experienced it at one time or another (yes, even people like Oprah Winfrey and J.K. Rowling!).

So the next time you're turned down for a date or don't get that job you applied to, remind yourself that rejection happens to everyone and instead of allowing yourself to be devastated and beat down, ask yourself what you can do going forward. Says Gottlieb: "The most important thing is to not sit in the rejection, but to say, is there anything I can learn from this experience? And then what can I do moving forward? Where can I go?"

10 Signs of Heart Failure You Should Know, According to Doctors – Prevention.com

There are two major heart attack symptoms that everyone is aware of: sudden and severe chest pain that feels like a clenched fist and pain radiating down the arm. But its possible other warning signs may have cropped up on the way to that cardiovascular event, and not been recognized as heart failure.

Unlike an actual heart attack, heart failure can happen gradually, and thats why people often mistake the symptoms for something else, like indigestion or being out of shape, says Robert Greenfield, M.D., cardiologist and medical director of non-invasive cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation at MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif. But the longer you go without seeing these as signs of heart trouble, the more damage you may have over time.

Sometimes called congestive heart failure, this condition occurs when there are problems associated with how the heart is pumping blood. That doesnt mean your heart has suddenly stopped working. In some cases, the heart may not pump with enough force to deliver the blood into your circulatory system, and in other cases, not enough blood is getting into your heart so the amount pumped out is reduced. As symptoms worsen, emergency treatment may be required.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, about 5.7 million people in the U.S. have heart failure, and it can affect both children and adults. Currently, theres no cure, but treatments like lifestyle changes and medications can make a huge difference in terms of longevity and quality of life.

Like many conditions, the earlier you catch it, the better your outlook. Here are 10 signs that your ticker may not be operating the way it should.

Quick anatomy refresher: The heart and lungs are best pals when it comes to functionality, working together to make sure your body has oxygen-rich blood. The right side of the heart takes in blood thats been depleted of oxygen and pumps it over to the lungs so it can get an oxygen refresh. Since heart failure affects how well this elegant system operates, shortness of breath is a major sign of trouble, says Dr. Greenfield. People will feel air hunger, meaning no matter how deeply you inhale, you dont feel like youre getting enough oxygen.

The feeling of air hunger can happen at rest but its especially acute with exertioneven walking across a room can feel like too much effort. If youre trying to get in an actual workout, increased activity raises your heart rate, which means its trying to pump faster and you could find yourself really gasping for air then. People often think theyre just out of shape when they cant catch their breath, Dr. Greenfield says. They think they need to get to the gym. But what they need is to get to the doctor.

When you lie down, some of the blood in your legs goes back into your bloodstream, and that creates an increased amount returning to the heart. Usually, the heart can compensate through its pumping mechanism. But with heart failure, it cant keep up and that can cause more shortness of breath, says Dr. Greenfield. You can often find some relief through propping your head up, relieving the pressure on your lungs, which is why a cardiologist might ask how many pillows you use to avoid feeling winded.

When your heart isnt operating properly, it pumps less blood to your kidneys, and as a result, that organ compensates by retaining fluid. Most often, this shows up first in your lower extremities, according to Adriana Quinones-Camacho, M.D., cardiologist at NYU Langone Health in New York. Also called edema, this puffiness in your legs, arms, and feet tends to affect both sides, and causes stretched, shiny skin. Its also a telltale sign of edema if you press a finger into the swelling and that indentation stays for several seconds.

The fluid buildup that may be in your legs can back up higher into the abdomen and arms. This rapid weight gain is often mistaken for fat accumulation, but its actually water weight from fluid retention, says Dr. Quinones-Camacho. This can happen suddenly, she adds, like seeing an additional five pounds over a few days, particularly in the belly.

All that fluid youre retaining has to go somewhere eventually. Thats when you may find yourself always having to pee, especially multiple times in the middle of the night. Sometimes, people brush this off as a sign of aging, says Dr. Quinones-Camacho, or drinking too much water close to bedtime. Unfortunately, some people try to correct the issue by cutting down on water intake during the day, but this can make fluid retention worse, since the body starts holding on to water in order to prevent dehydration. That cycle gets even uglier with heart failure because dehydration causes strain and increases your heart rate.

The way the body compensates during heart failure is to divert blood to vital organs, especially the brain, and channel it away from less-important areas like your muscles and limbs. That can lead to a feeling of weakness and fatigue, says Dr. Greenfield.

Another area of the body the heart considers non-vital when theres trouble? Your digestive system. With blood being diverted, your stomach and gastrointestinal tract are getting less blood, and that can slow their functions way down, Dr. Greenfield says. You might have a range of effects, including indigestion, lack of appetite, nausea, and constipation.

Even though the heart prioritizes brain function when theres an issue, heart failure might be caused by a circulation issue, according to Dr. Greenfield. When that happens, not enough blood may be reaching your brain, and that can lead to symptoms like dizziness, mild disorientation, confusion, or even challenges with memory and concentration. In extreme cases, you may experience fainting.

Multiple woolen layers of socks and mittens are doing nothing to help your icy feet and hands? That could be another symptom of a circulation issue, potentially brought on by heart failure. But this is the kind of sign thats not enough on its own, Dr. Greenfield says, especially because its common for people to have colder hands and feet in general. However, if you experience this as well as several others on the list, they could all be connected.

How to deal with heart failure symptoms

Its critical to see your doctor. Although there are certain tactics that can help address minor symptomsprop your head up at night, drink more water, and dont smokethis isnt an issue to try to tackle on your own.

The sooner you can get your heart checked out, especially if your symptoms are more minor, the more chance you have to improve your heart function and avoid potential heart attack, says Dr. Greenfield.

Of course, there are great heart-healthy lifestyle habits that will be invaluable for long-term change. But if youre experiencing any of the symptoms listed here, its possible you may need short-term interventions, like medication, to make sure your heart gets back on track.

February is heart health month and throughout the month we will be hearing from Baptist Health on ways to promote healthy living for your heart.

Did you know 350,000 people a year go into cardiac arrest outside of the hospital?

In honor of American heart month, Baptist Health is teaching you how to save one of those lives.

90 percent of cardiac arrests that happen in the home die," said Jeremy Ibison. Sebastian County rescue team supervisor Jeremy Ibison says by learning hands-on Cpr you could increase the heart attack survival rate by 3 times.

Theres always been this fear I think on the community of mouth to mouth and responding and doing CPR is difficult its not difficult but its very simple," said Ibison. Joseph Kennon with Baptist Health tells us hands-on CPR takes only a few simple steps

All you need to do is activate EMS, dial 9-1-1 and then get the patient hands in the center of the chest and push hard and fast at the rate of 100 beats per minute," said Kennon.

Experts with Baptist Health are going out in the community to teach this simple skill in hopes of saving a life.

If people will be unafraid to react and help the better our survival rates will be," said Ibision.

Community members will get a chance to receive hands-only CPR training, during a seminar focused on heart health February 19th at Baptist Health Hospital in Fort Smith.

Study Shows How Soap Molecules Alter the Protein Structure – AZoM

During the production of cosmetics and detergents, it is important to control the structure of proteins. But so far, there has been no clear understanding of how both proteins and soap molecules work together to alter the structure of proteins.

Scientists at Aarhus University have successfully produced a comprehensive picture of how soap molecules are able to refold and unfold the proteins on the millisecond timescale.

Figuring out the interactions between soap molecules (surfactants) and proteins has traditionally been significant for the industry, specifically within cosmetics and detergents.

It is known that sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)an anionic surfactantunfolds globular proteins, whereas octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8)a non-ionic surfactantdoes the reverse, that is, it helps proteins to refold into a shape.

If washing powders had to work efficiently, then it should be ensured that the surfactants do not alter the structure of proteins or enzymes. This is because any changes in the structure of the enzymes destroy their potential to remove dirt or break down stains.

A majority of the washing powders contain a combination of surfactants that enable the enzymes to stay active. Moreover, certain biotechnologies tend to manipulate the surfactants along with proteins.

Generally, membrane proteins are present in the cell membrane. To extract these membrane proteins from this setting for various analyses, they need to be solubilized by the surfactant. This surfactant should be sufficiently gentle and only enclose the membrane-inserted portion of the proteins, so that their structure is not disturbed.

On the other hand, when the molecular weight of proteins is being characterized in the laboratory, one typical method is to unfold these proteins by SDS, which happens to be the aggressive negatively charged surfactant, and track how these proteins move in a polymer gel within an electric field. But this method works only when the surfactant fully unfolds the proteins and damages their structure.

A debate is still going on about which kind of interactions between the surfactant and the protein is most significant. Is it the electrostatic interactions that occur between the protein and the surfactant charges, or is it only the characteristics of the interface of the aggregates (micelles) that the surfactants form in water, which account for protein unfolding?

Despite a thorough analysis of the unfolding processes at the protein level, a clear picture of the communication between surfactant and protein is not available in these processes. This lack of understanding has been addressed in the present work by utilizing the globular protein -lactoglobulin, or bLG, as a model protein.

A better understanding of the refolding and unfolding of proteins was achieved by plotting the numerous steps of protein-surfactant interactions as a function of time.

At first, bLGthe model proteinwas combined with the anionic surfactant SDS and, at the same time, the time evolution of the development of complexes between surfactant and protein molecules was tracked on the time scale ranging from milliseconds to minutes.

This method allowed the scientists to establish the structure of the emerging complexes. The team then plotted the time course of the refolding process when C12E8, a non-charged surfactant, was introduced to a sample comprising complexes of protein and SDS.

To visualize the way the protein reassembles during the course of the refolding and unfolding process caused by surfactants, complementary spectroscopic methods like tryptophan fluorescence and Circular Dichroism were employed together with time-resolved Small-angle X-ray scattering, or SAXS.

While variations in the bLG structure were tracked by both tryptophan fluorescence and Circular Dichroism, variations in the total shape of the complexes of protein and surfactant were monitored by synchrotron SAXS. Earlier, such kinds of combined techniques have never been used to analyze these processes.

Protein unfolding by SDS was a uniform process, in which all the molecules of proteins follow the same path of unfolding. The SDS complexes, or micelles, directly attack the protein molecules and then slowly unfold the protein so that it creates a shell over the SDS micelle. The refolding process begins when C12E8 micelles form mixed SDS-C12E8 micelles by sucking out the SDS from the protein-SDS complex.

But the actual refolding process appears to follow a number of paths, as numerous structures were observed to form simultaneously, such as mixed micelles of C12E8 and SDS, protein-surfactant complexes (perhaps comprising both C12E8 and SDS), properly folded proteins, and naked proteins that unfolded just like long polymeric chains.

The experiment made it possible to track the inter-conversion between these species, so that the type of processes that are fast and the ones that are slow can be determined.

The folded protein is likely to form from the naked unfolded proteins (quickly) and also from the complexes of protein and surfactants (more gradually). Hence, the most optimal way where surfactants can assist in the protein folding process is to essentially get out of the way and allow the protein to trace its own way back to the folded state.

The outcomes have given a better understanding of the structural variations that take place at the proteinsurfactant level. The results also demonstrated that refolding and unfolding of proteins mediated by surfactants are intricate processes of rearrangements that take place on time scales from less than milliseconds to minutes and also involve a close association between proteins and surfactant complexes.

The Independent Research Fund Denmark funded the study. The study was performed by scientists from Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO) and Department of Chemistry, and Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Aarhus University, in association with scientists from ESRFThe European Synchrotron in Grenoble (France).

Professor Jan Skov Pedersen (iNANO and Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University) and Professor Daniel E. Otzen (iNANO and Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University) were in charge of the research group.

The keto diet: Its highs and lows plus 5 recipes – The Gazette

My friends Mike and Robin have been on the keto diet for a couple of years. They lost a ton of weight, and they look fit and trim better than Ive ever seen them, and Ive known them more than 30 years.

Their results are not unusual. The keto diet often leads to rapid weight loss.

The trick lies in keeping it off. Mike and Robin have done it well, but a lot of people cant. And therein lies a problem, according to Jennifer McDaniel, a registered dietitian and the owner of McDaniel Nutrition Therapy in St. Louis.

While you might gain benefits in the short term just like any other restrictive diet, most people like, 90% of the people have trouble staying on it. When they lose the weight and they cant maintain the weight that they attained, thats just another failed diet, she said.

The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrates diet its like the Atkins diet on steroids, McDaniel said. People on the diet strive to consume 70% to 80% of their calories through fats, as little as 5% through carbohydrates and the rest through protein.

This helps us lose weight because it forces our bodies to burn fat for energy instead of its preferred fuel, carbohydrates.

McDaniel recommends that her clients not go on the keto diet. The diet changes the microbiome in their bodies (the bacteria, fungi and more that live inside us). It is difficult for people on the diet to consume enough fiber, which can lead to constipation and other gastrointestinal nastiness. And because carbohydrates hold onto water, people on the diet are often dehydrated, she said.

And yet, as Mike and Robin and thousands of others can attest, it works. So I decided to try a few recipes to see how they tasted.

The rules of the keto diet are highly restrictive, which can make cooking difficult. You need to avoid fruit, sugars, grains, beans and legumes, rice, potatoes, candy and juice.

Ingredients to be encouraged include meat, fatty fish, eggs, butter and cream, cheese, nuts and seeds, certain oils (olive, avocado, coconut) and low-carb vegetables most green vegetables, tomatoes, onions, peppers and the like.

Its a lot to take in, so I began with a simple and entirely wonderful dish of Citrus-Marinated Olives. These are a marvelous treat, combining the heady earthiness of olives with bright notes of orange and lemon. Though the flavors are disparate, they work surprisingly well together.

Best of all, you make them in mere minutes.

Another winner was Keto Egg Cups, a dish that concisely presents everything that is good about keto cooking: Little cups made from prosciutto hold eggs mixed with cream, spinach, roasted red peppers and mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

Its a delightful conglomeration of high-fat goodies that come together into a hand-held snack. And its just as fun at room temperature as it is warm.

Two entrees came next. First, I took a recipe for Instant-Pot Keto Mediterranean Chicken and made it a recipe for Keto Mediterranean Chicken Without an Instant Pot. It only took about five minutes longer than the Instant-Pot version, and it was deeply satisfying.

Ill admit, though, that I could not commit to full keto cooking with this one. As written, the recipe calls for searing six chicken thighs and then cooking the dish in the resulting fat.

My six thighs rendered out a half cup of fat. I just couldnt do it. I couldnt cook with and I certainly couldnt eat that much fat. I know the keto diet requires what seems like a shocking amount of fat to work, but I just couldnt see it. I poured out half of the fat, and the dish still felt greasy to me.

Greasy, but delicious. Meaty chicken thighs are paired with olives, capers, oregano and a cutting splash of vinegar. Its presented with a fresh-tasting yogurt sauce, making an impressive presentation. Id happily eat it anytime, especially if I poured out all but one tablespoon of that fat.

The other entree, Keto Breaded Chicken Cutlets, isnt bad but Id only make it again if I were on the keto diet. The chicken is dredged through almond flour before frying, which gives it a duller flavor than wheat flour.

With wheat flour, the same recipe would be excellent, if familiar. If youre on the keto diet, almond flour is definitely the way to go. Just be sure to use a lot of salt.

The last dish I made was a dessert called Black and White Keto Fat Bombs. Seriously, thats the name, and seriously, thats what they are. They are chocolate-and-vanilla candies that are made with coconut oil and almonds, plus low-carb, powdered sweetener, sugar-free vanilla extract and unsweetened cocoa powder.

How did they taste? Not bad, actually, or at least not too bad. But the texture was so oily and off-putting that most taste testers threw away their samples. One said it was like eating butter.

If youre on the keto diet and youre looking for an extra infusion of fat, then Id say to go ahead and make it. Otherwise, this is one to avoid.

My friend Robin swears by the keto diet and says she is passionate about it. Her health indicators are all great, and she says she has higher energy and alertness. And though the diet is restrictive, she likes what she can eat: cheese, olive oil, butter, nuts and dark chocolate.

The biggest thing she misses is fruit, but she does not miss the 40 pounds she lost.

Then again, I have another friend, Roger, who lost 65 pounds. He just eats more healthfully and mindfully, and walks every day. That sounds easier.

BLACK AND WHITE KETO FAT BOMBS

Yield: 15 servings

2 cups slivered almonds

1 cup coconut oil

1 to 2 tablespoons of your favorite low-carb powdered sweetener

1 teaspoon orange zest

2 teaspoons vanilla extract (sugar-free if on keto diet)

Small pinch salt

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Line a mini-muffin tin with mini liners.

Pulse and then process the almonds, oil, sweetener, vanilla, zest and salt until smooth except for small chunks of almond (like chunky peanut butter). Remove half to a small bowl and stir in the cocoa powder.

Fill half of one liner with the vanilla mixture and then quickly fill the other half with the chocolate mixture (it should remind you of a black-and-white cookie). Repeat with the remaining vanilla and chocolate mixtures. Tap the tin on the counter a few times.

Freeze until solid, about 30 minutes. You can remove the liners if youd like. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Per serving: 243 calories; 24 g fat; 13 g saturated fat; no cholesterol; 4 g protein; 5 g carbohydrate; 1 g sugar; 3 g fiber; 155 mg sodium; 53 mg calcium

KETO MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN

Yield: 4 servings

1 tablespoon olive oil

8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

Salt and pepper

3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1 cup pitted kalamata olives

2 tablespoons capers

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 cup whole-milk Greek yogurt

1/4 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Liberally sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper and cook half of the pieces, skin-side down, until the skin is deeply browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Flip and cook until the other side is deeply browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining pieces of chicken.

Pour out all but 1 tablespoon of the fat (if on the keto diet, keep all the fat in the pot). Return pot to heat and add garlic; cook until golden brown, about 1 minute. Add the olives, capers, vinegar, oregano and 1/2 cup water; stir to combine and to scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pot. Return chicken pieces to pot and stir to mix.

Cover and cook at a simmer until chicken is done, about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken and boil the sauce to reduce it by half.

Meanwhile, mix the yogurt, parsley, mint, lemon zest and lemon juice, plus a large pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Taste and season with more salt and pepper, if needed.

Serve the chicken with its sauce, and the yogurt sauce on the side.

KETO EGG CUPS

Yield: 3 servings

1 tablespoon butter, see note

6 large, thin slices of prosciutto

1/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan

1/4 cup packed baby spinach leaves, chopped

1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped

6 large eggs

1/4 cup heavy cream

Salt and pepper

Note: To make this recipe even more keto-friendly, instead of greasing the muffin tin with 1 tablespoon of butter, melt 2 tablespoons and brush the tin with it. It will pool in the bottom of each cup, but that is OK.

Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees.

Grease the cups of a muffin tin with the 1 tablespoon of butter (or brush with 2 tablespoons of melted butter). Line each cup with a slice of prosciutto, folding and overlapping so that the entire surface of the cup is covered and no metal is peeking through. Divide the mozzarella evenly among the cups. Repeat with the Parmesan, spinach and roasted red peppers.

Whisk the eggs and cream in a large measuring cup or small pitcher; add some salt and a few grinds of pepper. Pour the egg mixture in each cup, making sure not to overfill.

Bake until the eggs are set and wobble only slightly, 10 to 12 minutes (the eggs will continue to cook after they come out). Let cool 5 minutes, then use a thin knife or offset spatula, if necessary, to loosen the prosciutto from the edges of each cup. Transfer to a plate for serving.

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

2 sprigs fresh thyme

1 garlic clove, thinly sliced

1 strip lemon zest, removed with a vegetable peeler

1 strip orange zest, removed with a vegetable peeler

Salt and pepper

1 cup Castelvetrano olives

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon orange juice

Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the red pepper flakes, thyme, garlic, lemon zest, orange zest, salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is pale golden, about 2 minutes. Stir in olives and cook until just warm, 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and orange juice. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Im convinced Costco has THE best frozen broccoli, she says. Liz Shaw, Nutrition Expert and Author at Shaw Simple Swaps, is another raving fan! Convenience is king in my house and these frozen broccoli florets constantly deliver a delicious, high-quality product without sacrificing any nutrition. Stricklen says that keeping a stash of frozen veggies means that no matter what else is going on, you can always ensure you have a balanced plate. Though its considered unsafe to eat raw egg whites, this carton is pasteurized so you can incorporate them safely into smoothies, raw cookie dough or any other uncooked recipe, she explains.

Harris-Pincus describes this staple as a blank canvas to take almost any dish from savory to sweet. Need some ideas? She suggests using the yogurt to replace fat when baking, adding it to smoothies to boost protein, or to replace sour cream in entrees.

Plus, Melissa Nieves, RD, founder of Fad Free Nutrition Blog adds that because theyre individually sealed, they don't spoil as easily as a bigger tub of guacamole. I adore almond butter but it's so expensive! says, Nieves. This one from Costco is 27 oz and costs around $9, which is what a smaller tub costs at a regular supermarket. Sports dietitian and creator of the Fit Fueling course for active women, Kelly Jones, RD, also recommends this pick. I find this one to be creamy from the top to the bottom of the jar, while also being more economical.

Heres a meal prep short cut you can feel really good about. Each cup has 8 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber, which is a significant bump from plain rice, says Jones, who explains that the nutrients in this whole grain dish can help improve feelings of fullness.

Taylor Sutton, RD, stocks up on these healthy loaves at Costco. We try to change up our weekly sandwich routine so freezing it in half loaves is a great option when you buy this bread in bulk, she says. Freezing bread is like pushing the pause button so it wont get moldy or stale.

Bargain hunters will appreciate the excellent value when buying these crackers at Costco (only $8.99 for a huge box with 2 bags inside), according to Stricklen. I love these crackers because they are made with nutrient dense ingredients, are lower in carbohydrates than many other crackers, and are great for people with gluten-sensitivity since they are gluten-free. You can dip them in nut butter, hummus or guacamole for a snack or add some healthy carbs with your lunch by dipping them in tuna salad, she says.

Everyone loves a deal, and everyone loves maple syrup, so this topped the list for many RDs. Its true that sugar is sugar, whether its maple syrup or cane sugar, but I find a little bit goes a long way with pure maple syrup (so I end up using less sweetener), explains Stricklen.

CBD is cannabidiol oil, an extract of hemp that does not include THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, according to Henry Bynum, a family medicine physician with Keystone Family Medicine and Prisma Health.

Bynum says people are most commonly using CBD oil for chronic pain, anxiety, depression or insomnia.

Whats helped it explode in popularity is the farm bill passed a year ago, Bynum says.

If the CBD comes from a hemp that has less than a specified threshold of THC, then the hemp can be grown legally (with certain requirements), as opposed to marijuana with much higher THC.

There are some potentially problematic issues with CBD oil, including knowing whether or not the product you are buying is what it claims to be. Bynum says using a site such as consumerlab.com can help buyers know if the product contains what it reports.

Do some homework to at least get what you are paying for, he says.

Beyond that, there is still much to learn.

What exactly CBD does and its long-term implications, we just dont know, Bynum says.

A lot of the stories about what CBD oil does are anecdotal and still lacking in human studies.

The research is very much in its infancy, Bynum says. In the scientific community, were saying, lets pump the brakes and get more data.

Because of how the substance is processed by the liver, CBD oil can potentially interact with certain drugs, including blood thinners, anti-anxiety and antidepressants drugs, HIV medications and even common medications like ibuprofen. Patients should definitely discuss these potentially dangerous combinations with their healthcare provider. Though it may indeed be effective for some problems and even safer than other substances, Bynum says some people should definitely avoid CBD oil, including those who are or could become pregnant.

We dont know what this does to the adult brain, let alone the developing brain, he says.

Bynum says data, such as the indication that CBD oil may have anti-inflammatory properties, is being extrapolated to include other things, such as those who say the substance must therefore be anti-cancer or anti-aging. For now, more research is needed.

For his patients who want to try it, Bynum says they have to balance what is known with what is yet to be discovered, as well as practical aspects like cost.

Its very hard to argue theres not some placebo effect, but what is actually happening on the cellular level? Bynum says.

Sunrise Nutrition brings new perspective to healthy living – Newton Kansan

As a registered dietitian for the past 18 years, Paula Miller is well-attuned to the facets and trends of healthy living.

That experience led her to open Sunrise Nutrition Consulting, 359 N. Old U.S. Highway 81 in Hesston, a business with a new perspective on how to address the health needs of her clients.

"During that time, I recognized that a lot of people don't have peace with food. My business is focused on bringing peace with food and body to people, because most of the media out there encourages mistrust in our bodies and talks about how our bodies are flawed, so I'm using evidence-based messages to help people kind of reframe how they see their food and body," Miller said. "Most people, when they think about food, they look into diet culture, which uses external rules for eating. My focus is bringing people into awareness of their internal reasons for eating; the primary ones are hunger, fullness and satisfaction."

Previously, Miller worked as a dietitian in the Army for three years helping in outpatient services and seeing people with diabetes and high cholesterol. Additionally, she worked with the Harvey County Health Department for a time when she first moved back to Kansas and has also worked in home care and hospice.

Miller also currently teaches at both Butler Community College and Hesston College. Through all of that work, Miller became a jack of all trades, so to speak, but opening her own business allows her to specialize. Her focus as on disordered eating, eating disorders and helping clients recover from those something with which she has first-hand experience.

"As a young adult and a teenager, I struggled with my own eating disorder that was never diagnosed. There's such misconceptions around eating disorders, and so I went into this field," Miller said. "Eating disorders in the typical population falls around 10 percent. Among nutrition professionals, eating disorders are in the 40 to 80% ranges. We're trying to figure food out. That's kind of what took me into nutrition in the first place, as it does a lot of professionals who are in this field."

Sunrise Nutrition opened in June 2019 in Hesston and is mainly focused on bringing people peace with food and body, in the words of Miller.

While Miller's unique approach to nutrition is gaining more mainstream attention, she recommends those looking to take the next step in getting some help with their health explore the services she offers and at least start with some form of consultation.

"The model that I use, intuitive eating, there's over 100 studies on this model, so it's really evidence-based. It's becoming more popular in the media, but unfortunately it's becoming a little bit watered down, so it's really important people are looking for a practitioner to find someone who has training in this method. It's not a method to change shape or size, it's a method to make peace with food and body," Miller said. "If people have struggled with their food or their body image for any period of time, it would be really important to look into my services because living a peaceful relationship with food and body allows them to then go out and do what they're really created to do instead of focusing on their food struggles and poor body image."

The Health of Tech – Twin Cities Business Magazine

Our Tech 20 list for 2020 includes a local startup that can produce human neurons in a week, and another that has created a blood test to identify an individuals specific causes of obesitythe sorts of breakthroughs that boggle the mind (of this non-techie, at least) and reaffirm Minnesotas standing as a leader in med tech. But perhaps even more encouraging for our local market (often considered narrowly focused on medical device production) are developments related to the business of health care, such as Verata, a new platform that uses artificial intelligence to cut through the red tape of health insurance authorization. (Take a look atthe complete Tech 20 list here.)

The health care business has been slower to innovate than other industries such as finance. Maybe thats because the focus is on lifesaving treatments (a good thing, to be sure) or because of the complexities of insurance and data privacy. Theres a growing sense among entrepreneurs that the business side of health care is ripe for disruption. Minnesotas role in that evolution could strengthen our broader influence in the startup world.

That drive to keep Minnesota an epicenter of medical innovation is at the heart of the Manova Global Health Summit. The second annual conference last fall emphasized trends in wellness, aging, and business. I had the privilege of moderating the conversation Whats the Venmo of Health? Revel Health CEO Jeff Fritz and U.S. Banks executive vice president and chief innovation officer Dominic Venturo discussed opportunities for innovation around medical forms and secure data, as well as new online tools that could be used for diagnosis, and how tech can promote healthy living.

This month, the University of St. Thomas will debut a new class on the digital transformation of health care. Dont think robot doctors, says John McVea, an associate professor at the Schulze School of Entrepreneurship, who is co-teaching with Daniel McLaughlin, director of the Center for Innovation in the Business of Health Care at the Opus College of Business. Its about using technology to transform the way patients consume health services in the same way that Netflix and Amazon have transformed entertainment and retail.

The special seminar is open to elite undergraduate Aquinas Scholarsmost of whom arent premed. These students are going to go on to be movers and shakers in all fields, McVea says. We want them to know that health care is an exciting, vital field where you can have a dramatic impact for the greater good.

The class will include entrepreneurial guest lecturers like Manova CEO Mark Addicks, and case studies of local companies such as Minneapolis-based Carrot Health, a software platform that uses data to improve health outcomes.

We might feel like weve spent an inordinate amount of time working on health care. But the focus has been on health insurance, McVea says. People are hungry for real progress.

Minnesota has all the necessary players, McLaughlin says, listing off Mayo Clinic, United Health Group (the largest U.S. health insurer), pioneering companies such as Medtronic, and initiatives like Destination Medical Center, which is pumping $5.6 billion into making Rochester a world-class city for health-related innovation. And, of course, theres Medical Alley, the organizing force for health-related businesses in Minnesota.

What health care employers are really challenged with is workforce, McLaughlin says. Its not that we dont have the talent or great companies, its that we need more skilled labor. Thats a sentiment we heard repeatedly while reporting this issues features. Minnesota is fighting with every other state for their workforce of the future (and of now), says Chris Schad, director of business development for Destination Medical Centers Discovery Square, a new business hub for health innovation. The state can be an attractor to land those folks by emphasizing quality of life and cost of living, as well as the density of tech firms here that offer a safety net of sorts. In our Q&A feature, Steve Grove, director of the states Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), talks about creative solutions to the labor shortage.

We hope a list like the Tech 20 is one more way to highlight for the next generation of innovators, programmers, clinicians, and scientists how many exciting developments are taking shape in Minnesota. Thats especially true in the health sector.

McVea says it best: Weve got to make sure our brightest and best see health care as an exciting opportunity where you can have a fulfilling career as an innovator rather than a place to be in public administration. We need to make it an aspirational sector for future influencers.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas In today's world, millions are spent on cosmetic surgery to keep that healthy glow everywhere we go. However, if you don't have thousands of dollars to pay for it, there are other, more safe alternatives that are non-surgical.

A few years ago I started noticing that no matter how much sleep I got, I just didn't look as fresh as I did when I was younger. I thought maybe it was time to talk to a professional about how I could get back that youthful appearance.

Stress, the daily rigor of life, and gravity all take their toll on the face, and there's nothing wrong with admitting you need a little help to look and feel a little better.

I visited with Dr. Vijay Bingdingdavale, a local cosmetic surgeon, to address my concerns and explore some options. The first thing he suggested was injections to relax my forehead area.

"That'll lift the eyebrows as well. What happens is when we inject these two areas, your eyebrows come a little bit higher, and giving you more of a refreshed look," Dr. Bingdingdavale said.

Then adding fullness to the upper cheeks would bring some balance to my face.

"You see how when you have a little bit more cheek fullness it harmonizes the face? It lifts this and fill this in as well," Dr. Bingdingdavale said.

Using fat transfer as opposed to artificial fillers has an additional benefit.

"We see this a lot, because there are stem cells in the fat, it makes the overlying skin more refreshed and more young-looking," Dr. Bingdingdavale said.

In the end, that's what we all want -- a more refreshed appearance even if we don't get our eight hours every night.

QBRI encourages residents to stay active to improve their health – Gulf Times

National Sport Day was first held in Qatar in 2012 and it provides an excellent opportunity to unite the countrys residents to take part in fun sporting activities.But there is another essential aspect to National Sport Day. It is the timely chance to promote healthy living and raise awareness of why an active and sensible lifestyle is important in keeping diseases at bay.Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, was launched in the same year as the first National Sport Day. The similarity does not end there as QBRI also actively encourages a healthy lifestyle. It does so to improve and transform healthcare through innovation in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the Qatari population and the region.QBRI has three centres of excellence the Cancer Research Centre, Diabetes Research Centre and Neurological Disorders Research Centre and all three encourage staying active and eating well to reduce the risk of disease.The Cancer Research Centre focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular basis of cancer initiation and progression with a focus on breast cancer, which is the most common type of the disease among females globally.Dr Eyad Elkord, a Principal Investigator at the Cancer Research Centre, said: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle lowers the risk of cancer onset and different studies showed that significant numbers of cancer deaths are due to lifestyle-related risk factors. Exercise controls tumour growth by mobilising immune cells within the body and releasing some factors from muscles with anti-tumour properties.Moreover, regular exercise and healthy eating habits maintain stability within the body, known as haemostasis, and could help to prevent cancer initiation. Aerobic and cardiovascular exercises, coupled with a balanced and nutrient-rich diet, are highly recommended for healthy individuals as well as cancer patients undergoing treatment. The Diabetes Research Centre serves as a catalyst to promote innovative research on both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Its primary goal is to gain fundamental knowledge and enhance the understanding of social, molecular and genetic causes of the disease.Dr Paul Thornalley, Director of the Diabetes Research Centre, said: Exercise is good for the health of diabetics, whether they have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It helps to improve your health and also decrease the risk of complications of diabetes.Patients with Type 1 diabetes should check with their physician before taking on a new exercise routine to plan how to best manage their blood glucose and insulin injections accordingly.For Type 2 diabetes, which is often associated with being overweight and obese, exercise is a good way to control and improve body weight, the bodys responsiveness to insulin and blood glucose control. Particularly, in recently-diagnosed Type 2 diabetes, exercise may help along with a decreased calorie intake to reverse the development of diabetes.In overweight and obese people, doing more exercise and eating in moderation to lose weight will help prevent developing Type 2 diabetes. It is recommended to do about two-and-a-half hours exercise per week.The Neurological Disorders Research Centre focuses on investigating neural conditions of increasing prevalence in Qatar and the region. These ailments are wide-ranging and include autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, epilepsy, Alzheimers disease and Parkinsons disease.Dr Yongsoo Park, a scientist at the Neurological Disorders Research Center, said: Neurological disorders result from problems of the central and peripheral nervous system but physical exercises and activities can make our nervous system active and healthy, and therefore reduce the risk of neurological disorders.Physical exercise leads to and increases neurogenesis (creating new neurons), neuroplasticity (improving neural networks) and synaptic transmission (enhancing neurotransmitter release and improving brain function) so the neurological benefits of exercise is significant. For elderly people, yoga, walking, running and swimming are highly recommended, but a healthy diet, good sleep and staying socially engaged with friends and family is also beneficial.We should be doing everything we can to lead a healthy lifestyle. That means eating well, exercising, avoiding harmful things, getting enough sleep and avoiding stress.
