Do you get sick more often than you used to?Although we typically think of the external signs of aging, with the emergence of wrinkles and graying hair, aging is also an internal process that has roots at the cellular level. All the organs of our bodies are made up of individual cells that have limited life spans. While we are young, our cells divide many times as we grow. Our cells are capable of repairing themselves, communicating with other cells, and interacting with all the physiological molecules that ultimately define our current state of health. Scientists have discovered, however, that our cells have a limited capacity to divide and repair.

Laboratory studies have shown that cell aging patterns are genetically encoded and cell death occurs along a predictable schedule of events for different cell types. Our DNA is bundled into chromosomes, each capped with repeated sequences called telomeres. During cell division, the cell attempts to make a complete copy of itself, including all of its DNA, but researchers have discovered that these telomeres shorten over successive cell divisions. The telomeres help protect the DNA from radical arrangements (that might cause cancer, for example) and they can be lengthened by an enzyme called telomerase. If the telomeres are allowed to become too short, however, the cell senses this problem and puts in motion a cascade of events that will result in its own death. This mechanism of programmed cell death, also called apoptosis, is a critical part of proper human development and a natural part of the life cycle of a cell.

A cells life also comes to a close if its DNA sustains damage more quickly than the DNA repair machinery can compensate for it. One of the major causes of DNA damage in our cells is the presence of free radicals. These highly reactive molecules can cause significant damage to both the proteins and the DNA in our cells by undergoing chemical reactions with them. The free radical theory of aging suggests that these molecules accumulate naturally over time and that our DNA repair machinery copes less and less well with the damage. Thus, our physical aging would be correlated with this decline in the health of our individual cells. Free radical damage has also been scientifically linked to many age-related medical conditions, including arthritis, Alzheimers, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Intriguingly, it has been shown that antioxidants can slow or stop the damage caused by free radicals by helping to balance the chemical reactions in the cells. Antioxidant levels can be increased by adding antioxidant rich foods to the diet or by taking nutritional supplements.

Because our cells become less resilient as we age, so do our bodies. We become more susceptible to illnesses and once we get sick, it takes longer to recover. Wounds may also take longer to heal. As some cells begin to lose function, they cease expressing hormones, further shifting our physiological balance. All of the changes to our immunity, metabolism, and body chemistry can have a huge impact on our health and well-being as we age.

Some of the signs of aging are superficial. Wrinkles develop, particularly near the eyes, mouth, and other expressive parts of the face. As the skin begins to lose its elasticity and the layer of fat beneath the skin begins to diminish, the face can take on a further wrinkled or gaunt appearance. Age-related hair loss may also occur in both men and women due to hormonal changes or genetic factors.

Our immune systems and cell repair systems gradually become less efficient as a person ages, responding less quickly and vigorously to challenges. People may become more susceptible to illnesses and, once acquired, find them harder to recover from. Wounds may heal more slowly and muscle soreness after exercise can linger longer. If cell and tissue damage accumulate more quickly than the body can make repairs, cell death will become more frequent, causing more aging related symptoms and maladies to emerge.

Significant hormonal changes also take place during aging. For women, the most radical change occurs with the onset of menopause, in which the ovaries lose function. In addition to the cessation of menstruation, there are other physiological changes that occur due to the sudden lack of estrogen production in the body. The changes in bone mineral density can lead to osteoporosis, increasing the risk of bone fractures. Sleeping patterns, libido, and mood may also be effected by menopause. In men, testosterone production continues during aging, though levels begin to decline after age forty. This reduction in testosterone can lead to hair loss, muscle mass reduction, and sexual dysfunction.

Some mental symptoms associated with aging include increased forgetfulness and difficulties learning new things. The brain becomes less pliable during the later years of life, though the chemical and structural changes that might mediate this phenomenon are unclear. The rate of cognitive decline varies from person to person and only drops steeply for some near the very end of life.

While aging is a natural phenomenon, there are also lifestyle choices and other factors that can accelerate the process and reduce a persons longevity. In other words, it is possible for people to prematurely age their bodies and shorten their lives.

Too much exposure to the sun can age a persons skin prematurely. The ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight can damage DNA, hastening skin cell death. UV overexposure can also contribute to the breakdown of the matrix of collagen and elastin that forms the fleshy layer of skin beneath the surface. As the skin weakens, it loses its spring, sags, and wrinkles begin to form. The skin can also become freckled, dry, or blotchy. DNA damage from UV light can also increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

Excessive alcohol, caffeine, or nicotine can also accelerate the aging processes through direct cell damage or complications following long term use. Nicotine, for example, both increases the heart rate and constricts blood vessels, elevating blood pressure and putting undue pressure on the cardiovascular system. The complications of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular diseases can dramatically reduce both longevity and the quality of the final years of life.

Poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle can also push the metabolic balance of the body toward a more limited life span by increasing the chances of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other life-shortening conditions. Perhaps ironically, nutrition and exercise are often neglected in the interest of saving time.

The accumulation of toxins in the body can contribute to premature aging by stimulating the formation of free radicals or causing other types of cell damage. While pollutants in the air and water certainly contribute to a persons toxin levels, many toxins are consumed unknowingly. Food additives and preservatives are quite common, even among superficially healthy foods. Hormones, pesticides, and industrial chemicals may also taint non-organic foods bought at the grocery store.Insufficient sleep can also contribute to aging by denying the body its much needed rest and repair. Information processing and memory formation occur as the brain progresses through the phases of sleep, sharpening the mind while it rests. Sleep can also impact hormones, metabolism, and immunity, all of which influence our states of health. Chronic sleep deprivation and the resulting sleep debt can lead to a multitude of persistent health problems, affecting a person physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Finally, stress can prematurely age the body in numerous ways. Researchers have shown that stress can increase the speed with which telomeres shorten, causing cell death to occur more rapidly. Stress can also increase blood pressure, aging the cardiovascular system, and put significant strain on the nervous system and immune system. Stress can contribute to hair loss and wrinkle formation, both which can also make a person appear older than they are.

The Philippine STAR: What are the most prevalent lifestyle problem of working women?

Dr. Oyie Balburias: Due to their professional duties, functions and responsibilities juggling their roles as a mother and caregiver to the family working women suffer from chronic stress that, if persistent, will result in hormone imbalances. Persistence of hormone imbalances as a result of chronic stress later on leads to several conditions and diseases affecting womens health, namely obesity, infertility, irregular and painful menstruations, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids and infertility, to name a few. Hormone imbalances will also impact on the sleep quality and quantity, which in the end will further perpetuate the imbalance.

As a lifestyle coach and medical practitioner, could you share three lifestyle hacks or adjustments women can do be healthier?

Always have me time. Always have time for relaxation and engage in de-stressing activities (meditation and meditative exercises) or self care so the stressors will not be chronic and persistent. In doing so, there will be a balance of the sympathetic nervous system (fight) and the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxation response). Balance of this system will prevent the biologic response of our body to chronic stress which leads to hormone imbalances. Have a balanced and optimal nutrition. Its not the number of calories, but the composition and quality of food that you are eating that will impact on your metabolism. Foods that are whole, real and unprocessed are best. Every macronutrients (fats, proteins and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients) are needed by our body. Eliminating one will result in the body system creating a biologic response.

Breathe. If you find yourself overwhelmed by chaos and challenges, the best way to deal with it is to breathe and practice mindfulness.

Sleep deprivation and sedentary lifestyle will further aggravate and perpetuate hormone imbalances. Chronic sleep deprivation will affect their energy level, which leads to fatigue. Chronic fatigue leads to a sedentary lifestyle, which then further contributes to fat gain and obesity. Hormone imbalances contribute to cravings for carbohydrates and simple sugars, further aggravating the condition.

Eight hours is the amount of time that our body needs in order for the different stages of sleep to occur. NREM and REM stages of sleep, the deep sleep and not so deeper part of our sleep. In each stage, different biological, biochemical and physiological process are happening in order to prepare our resiliency for the following day. Adequate sleep is required for numerous biochemical reactions in the body. It is essential for normal cellular and tissue function, because numerous restorative functions occur during sleep, especially stages 3 and 4. Optimal sleep is important for growth hormone(GH) secretion. GH is the most potent hormone for fat metabolism. If there is a dysfunction with sleep in regard to inadequate quantity or depth there can be numerous adverse effects in the body.

Botanicals for dysmenorrhea include cinnamon bark, peppermint oil and ginger root. To decrease hot flashes, you need red clover and sage. For fibroids (myoma) and endometriosis, take turmeric, rosemary leaf and milk thistle.

Preventing the next virus outbreak – Social Europe

The coronavirus is not a natural disaster but the outcome of a system of agriculture subordinating animal, and human, welfare.

Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) poses global challenges and many scientists are trying to develop vaccines for the disease. Beyond the importance of discovering a drug, one must understand why the virus has spread and learn from this to prevent epidemics erupting in the future.

The outbreak, as the science writer Brian Resnick concluded, is due to human behaviour. How so? Scientists and reporters in China explain that one must go back to 1970.

That year, there was a heavy famine in China, which resulted in more than 36 million people starving. The Communist Party administration, which controlled food production, failed miserably to save the people. As a result, in 1978 it relinquished exclusive control over agriculture and allowed private entrepreneurs to trade. The private sector began to grow.

While most farmers domesticated animals such as poultry, pigs and cows, as well as growing cereals and legumes, a smaller, richer sector began to hunt and domesticate wildlife, such as bats, turtles and snakes. At first it was very small, growing and trading wildlife only around the home. Although initially this was illegal, the Chinese government turned a blind eye because it contributed to the livelihood of those engaged in it, necessary during those years of crisis.

Having come to realise the economic potential of selling wildlife, in 1988 the government changed the law, determining for the first time that wildlife was a natural resource which one could therefore use for ones own needs. This made wildlife trading increasingly interesting to the industry at the margin.

It soon became clear, however, that the decision was a precursor to the spread of new viruses. As the industry developed, in limited spaces huge markets emerged, selling a wide variety of animals: rhinos, wolves, mice, crocodiles, ducks and snakes, alongside pigs, chickens and more. Where there is a concentration of large animal populations, there is an opportunity for an animal disease to spread to other species and on to manwhich is exactly what happened.

In 2003, in a market in Guangdong province, the SARS virus (SARS-CoV) broke out, the source an Asian wild animal called the masked palm civet. The virus reached 71 countries, killing about 774 people. Following the outbreak, the Chinese government shunned the wildlife food industry.

Although its value was minimal for Chinas overall gross domestic product, those who lost huge profits following the decision lobbied to allow the trade to recommence. The pressure told: a few months later, the government declared 54 wildlife species as legitimate to trade in once more. In 2016, more varieties were added, such as tigers and pangolins (scaly anteaters).

In 2019 the coronavirus erupted. This time, the virus has reached more than 80 countries and it has already killed more than 3,000 people. Scientists speculate that the source was probably a bat, which transmitted the virus to a pangolin, entering humans in the market in Wuhan.

What is common to the two markets in which the SARS and corona viruses erupted is the high concentration of different animal types in dense conditions, allowing the transmission of viruses from one to another. The interaction of the three (bat-pangolin-human) depends on close proximity. As Peter Li, a professor of animal trafficking in China, explained,The cages are stuffed with each other. The animals at the bottom are soaked in fluids. One after the other. This is exactly how viruses emerge.

After the coronavirus broke out, the administration again blocked the sale of wildlife. But organisations around the world are pushing the Chinese to repeal the law allowing it completely. Yet since the government halted the trade after the outbreak of the SARS virus only to relent under pressure, it will not necessarily take a different tack this time.

When Resnick asked Jonathan Epstein, a veterinarian and epidemiologist, why its important to understand the source of the virus, his answer was, obviously, to avoid repetition. To him, epidemics occur because of human activityit is not the animals fault.

Is the problem the sale of wildlife intrinsically or is it the living conditions of the animals? Probably both.

In other countries, animals also live under harsh conditions which cause disease outbreaks. For example, the source of swine flu which radiated from Mexico in 2009 was probably the town of La Gloria, east of Mexico City, where industrialised pig pens were located. Bird flu and the mad cow disease which erupted in Britain can also be seen in this light.

The Chinese should not be judged for consuming animals others do notthere is really no difference between slaughtering tigers and cows or chickens. The main problem is the conditions, not the species.

The solution may thus be more liveable conditions for animals or indeed the cessation of the industrialised processing of animals. Instead of putting a band-aid on the problem (vaccines), it must be addressed more fundamentally. If we, humans, treat animal welfare as a necessary thingnot only for animals but also for usand insist that public health is more important than the wellbeing of wealthy industries, then the outbreak of such plagues can be prevented.

Investment fund managers are appealing for calm among investors as the coronavirus pandemic spreads, anticipating a six-month market disruption but divided on if there will emerge a new normal.

Amundi Asset Management said the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak should prove short-lived to the first half of the year with the mobilisation of fiscal tools, leaving the medium-term potential growth of economies intact.

Pascal Blanque, group chief investment officer, and Vincent Mortier, deputy group chief investment officer, said once the epidemic stabilised, economies will rebound and catch up some of the lost ground. The supply shock would disappear and pent-up demand would materialise, except in some sectors where losses in activity were not recoverable, such as tourism and air transport.

At the moment, the fear factor is at full play because the whole population understands thatthe situation is likely to worsen further in the coming weeks, Blanque and Mortier said.

That being said, despite the panic that has gripped markets, we believe that investors should remain calm as much as possible.

Asked if multigenerational family businesses, with their patient capital, can ride out the storm given their historic adaptability, Omar Kodmani, Investment Director at Ruffer LLP, said in principle, a very long-term investment horizon would suggest this was a reasonable strategy.

However, the drawdowns in equity markets along the way can be devastating to capital and being allocated to a manager that is preoccupied with the downside can help navigate the rollercoaster ride of public markets and provide a stable source of capital for other investments, Kodmani said.

In other words, time horizon is helpfulbut what you are invested in matters even more. Consistent with Ruffers capital preservation objective, our portfolios are broadly flat in 2020 so far while equity markets have entered bear market territory.

Professor Pele Clamour (pictured), of HEC Paris, pointed to three cases of multigenerational family businesses which survived and even prospered during times of turmoil.

The Wendels built their fortune on steel and survived despite several crises and wars, he said.

In finance, the longevity of the Rothschilds is also emblematic. We can also cite the Wallenbergs in Sweden. These families share a capacity for resilience and adaptation that have enabled them to get through these periods of crisis.

Kodmani at Ruffer said while it was impossible to generalise about the risk of a contemporary family business going bust, we are in a new environment now and contingency plans are required. Major shocks can change behaviour permanentlywe cannot assume a return to the status quo ante.

A new-normal for families and investors post-coronavirus was also suggested by Clamour but there were more immediate concerns. Asked if families should change their acquisition, investment, marketing, growth or recruitment strategies, he said the initial outbreaks first led to the implementation of a survival plan and the anticipation of scenarios for the future. The question of investments or acquisitions was currently secondary.

The banking system must be put at the service of the SME, Clamour said.

They will be in difficulty because they do not have sufficient cash to pass the storm. Central Banks and governments are the key drivers to lead this process.

Amundi expected a significant rebound in GDP growth in the second half of 2020, if there was coo-ordination of fiscal monetary support.

Currently markets expect a longer time to recover, but no global recession, Blanque and Mortier said at Amundi said.

We think that the worst could be contained to H1 as we already see some signs of recovery in China.

Clamour said COVID-19 was a powerful reminder that a risk which threatens a family business can also crash the value of more liquid assets, just when they were likely to be needed most.

The current turmoil in global markets should serve as a wakeup call to family office investment portfolios that they should have allocations to strategies that can hold up or make money in periods of stress, he said.

Today, we see how supply chains have been globalised, how much we are dependent on a certain number of export and import. We live a health shock, which can become a geopolitical shock and will destabilize our economic system.

Italy has become the epicentre for the coronavirus. The worst-hit country after China has reported nearly 25,000 cases and more than 1,800 have lost their lives.

Alfredo De Massis (pictured), Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business, Director of the Centre for Family Business Management, Free University of Bolzano and Lancaster University Management School, said Italian ultra-high net worth (UHNW) family business had always prioritised the saving of human lives over their economic interests.

Health comes before profits; this reflects the strong family-centered, non-economic goals that characterise the way Italian families do business, and distinguishes the behaviour of many family businesses as compared to their nonfamily counterparts, De Massis said.

So Italian UHNW family businesses are now taking strict measures to protect their people, allowing smart working or even closing some businesses when needed, showing a very socially responsible behaviour. This is also consistent with the typical propensity of Italian UHNW family businesses to build superior, long-term relationships with their employees. We will think about economic issues at a later stage, now we need to save as many lives as possible.

New study of heat-resistant protein class reveals unusual shape and ability to prevent dangerous clumps associated with neurodegenerative diseases.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have discovered a new group of proteins, remarkable for their unusual shape and abilities to protect against protein clumps associated with neurodegenerative diseases in lab experiments. The Hero proteins are heat resistant and are widespread in animals from insects to humans.

Most proteins have well-defined folds and twists that form a rigid structure, but the new type has a long, flexible stringlike structure. Researchers found the first of these strange proteins in flies and named it using a combination of an informal Japanese word meaning weak or not rigid and the diminutive suffix normally attached to young boys names, hero-hero kun.

Years later, researchers realized the name also fit the English meaning of hero, a brave defender.

The UTokyo team now reports that Hero proteins can protect other proteins, extend the life span of fruit flies by 30 percent, and protect both fruit flies and lab-grown human motor neurons from dangerous protein clumps, like those observed in patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

The Hero protein was identified by accident in about 2011 when then-graduate student Shintaro Iwasaki encountered an unusually heat-resistant protein that increased stability of Argonaute, the protein at the center of the labs studies. Iwasaki now leads his own lab at RIKEN.

It was kind of cool to know that a strange, extremely disordered, heat-resistant protein improved the behavior of Argonaute, but its biological relevance was unclear and, moreover, the proteins sequence seemed unrelated to anything else. So, we didnt know what to do next and just decided to put it on the shelf until years later, said Professor Yukihide Tomari, leader of the research lab and last author of the paper published in PLOS Biology.

Eventually, Kotaro Tsuboyama saw the hero-hero kun protein in a fresh light, initially after joining the lab as a doctoral student and now as a postdoctoral researcher.

Proteins with similar functions usually have similar amino acid sequences even between different species; experts call this evolutionary conservation.

The lack of evolutionary conservation that Tomaris team encountered when they first identified hero-hero kun seems to be a defining characteristic for Hero proteins, making it difficult to predict their function or even identity.

To uncover the true identities of more Hero proteins, researchers grew human and fruit fly cells in the lab, made extracts from the cells, then simply boiled them.

High temperatures normally weaken chemical interactions that support a proteins structure, causing it to unfold and clump together with other unfolded proteins.

Proteins are generally damaged by heat, but we found that Hero proteins remain intact even at 95 degrees Celsius [203 degrees Fahrenheit] without losing function. It is a bit strange, which is why I think no one has carefully characterized these proteins before, said Tsuboyama.

Next, researchers used an analytic technique called mass spectrometry to identify any proteins that remained in the boiled test tubes.

They found hundreds of Hero proteins in fruit flies and in humans.

Tsuboyama selected six Hero proteins to study in detail.

When some of the six Hero proteins were mixed with other client proteins, those clients kept their shape and function despite high heat, drying, or harsh chemicals that would normally destroy them.

In experiments using lab-grown human motor nerve cells, high levels of Hero proteins stopped cells from developing the protein clumps characteristic of the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and restored their normal growth patterns.

The large, sensitive eyes of fruit flies are often used as disease models, because they are deformed by mutations that cause neurodegeneration in humans. Researchers observed that enhancing Hero activity protected flies eyes from deformation caused by protein clumps associated with ALS. Conversely, eliminating normal Hero activity caused defects in the development of the fly eye.

Moreover, researchers found evidence that Hero proteins can promote longevity when they genetically modified healthy fruit flies to have high levels of individual Hero proteins throughout their whole bodies. Remarkably, some Hero proteins caused flies to live about 30 percent longer lives.

It appears that Hero proteins naturally exist to keep other proteins happy, said Tomari.

We saw many positive effects, but so far, we did not find any superhero among those six Hero proteins that can stabilize all client proteins. Some Hero proteins are good for some clients, and others are good for other clients, said Tsuboyama.

Researchers are planning future experiments to identify any patterns or rules about which Hero proteins assist which client molecules in living organisms.

We hope that, in the long run, Hero proteins can be useful for biotechnological and therapeutic applications, said Tomari.

Meet two Baton Rouge women who are transforming the vegan menu – Greater Baton Rouge Business Report

Vegan food has changed a lot in the past 30 years, but The Dish at White Star Market has still found something new to servemodern vegan food that tastes familiar.

Co-owners Domini Bradford and Jessica Kisling launched the all-vegan concept in September, in a whirlwind three days after being offered the space. Barely six months later, the female entrepreneurs say theyre busting at the seams.

The pair span two generations, Bradford with a 30-year career in vegan cooking, and Kisling with a brief background in engineering, yoga and a taste of running a vegan cafe out of the former Yoga Bliss. Thats where the two met, operating the small cafe at the studio, before quickly linking up to launch the new ventureequipped with a Walmart grill and all.

Bradford, as the sole chef at the restaurant, leads the menu research and development side of the business.

Domini is an incredible cook, Kisling says, adding her skills make The Dish what it is.

Kisling credits her first culinary job at the vegan cafe for taking that first chance on her, with no real culinary background to speak of.

When The Dish launched last year thats exactly what it was: just one (vegan) dish a day. Avid followers turned to the restaurants Instagram page every day to see what was being served up. But that concept took a heck of a lot of planningboth on the business side and the consumers. So The Dish launched a standing menu with rotating daily specials, including gluten-free pastries.

Yet the original new-dish-every-day concept is part of what helped The Dish grow its big online following. That, and their presence on the vegan website and app, Happy Cow, which helps vegans far and wide find places to eat at home and on the road.

At the end of February, they launched an app for mobile ordering; theyre staying out of the delivery game for now.

Bradford and Kisling say they want to expand beyond White Star, too and are now looking at brick and mortar optionspotentially following in the footsteps of White Star staple Chow Yum Phator other shared space locations, remote kitchens and the like.

I really hope that this is this restaurant that we can make into something really big, it feels that way, just because of the understanding that in the general world right now, even in the South, Bradford says.

Like any business, they want to maximize output. Sharing a kitchen space with all the other White Star vendors (not to mention the steps for preventing nonvegan cross-contamination) can limit that output. Bradford says the only thing really stopping them is a staffing need. Shed love to get another chef in the kitchen with vegan experience, but thats harder to find than meat substitutes.

Circling back to her roots in Jackson, Mississippi, Bradford says her dream is to turn The Dish into a co-op, where employees own the business. She stayed at the vegan restaurant in Jackson for 13 years in part because of the co-op atmosphere. Since she left, Bradford says shes been waiting to get back into that community atmosphere.

When employees have a stake in the business, it makes everybody put their heart into it at the best, Bradford says. Youve got people who really care, or they wouldnt be here.

While veganism, vegetarianism, pescetarianism and general plant-based eating are on the rise, The Dish is still reaching a niche market in Baton Rouge. Everybody knows a vegan, the duo says.

Their customer base is broad, they say, and bolstered by the food hall, divide-and-conquer atmosphere. Reflecting on her own struggles with wanting to be vegan as a teenager, Kisling says they now see a constant flow of families coming to White Star, giving kids the chance to split off and ascribe to a diet different from their parents.

Bradford has seen a lot in her roughly 30 years in the vegan culinary world. But the biggest difference has been in the availability of vegan products.

Products like Beyond Burger have completely changed the vegan game, she says. When she entered the vegan culinary world in Mississippi she was working at a cafe that followed a macrobiotic dietoften associated with Japanese cuisine and that some claim can treat cancer.

Her focus on making food that feels familiar, but is vegan goes back to the simple idea that being vegan isnt a massive sacrifice.

Vegans & Vitamin B12: Everything You Wanted To Know (But Were Afraid To Ask) – Plant Based News

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential vitamin, which means we cannot live without it and have to obtain it through diet.

It is needed for nerve cells maintenance, DNA formation and red blood cell production.

We only need a tiny amount but its crucial that we do get it. In the UK, the recommended intake is 1.5 g (micrograms) of B12 daily, in the US its 2.4 g and the European Food Safety Authority suggests an adequate intake of 4 g.

The liver stores B12 and this stock lasts up to three years. Therefore, you cannot become deficient in a week or even a month but theres no point in risking a deficiency.

When it develops, it can have severe consequences so its important to ensure regular B12 intake.

The main symptoms of B12 deficiency include fatigue, lack of energy, muscle weakness, pins and needles sensation, depression and cognitive problems (trouble remembering things, understanding and decision making).

Deficiency can also result in raised levels of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

At the other end of the spectrum are high B12 intakes you can take a high daily dose of this vitamin without any side effects but it shouldnt be more than 2,000 g (2 mg), according to the NHS (2017).

Vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria in the soil and water. Before sanitation, we used to get it from contaminated fruit and vegetables, and other plant foods.

Not only do we wash produce nowadays (and for good reasons), but most fruit and vegetables are pre-washed anyway so there's not a trace of B12 left. In addition, thanks to intensive farming practices, even the soil is depleted and lacking in these bacteria.

Animal products contain Vitamin B12, whilst most plants do not, and some people use this as an argument against veganism - but things are not so clear cut.

Farmed animals are given vitamins with their feed, which is why their flesh and secretions contain B12. People who consume animal foods effectively consume recycled B12. Isn't it better to go straight to the source and just take the supplement?

Studies show that insufficient B12 intake is a worldwide problem, with some populations having 30-40 percent of people with inadequate B12 levels (Allen et al., 2018). *

The truth is, its hard to get enough vitamin B12 from foods alone, even if you eat animal products.

For us, vegans, there are two options fortified foods or supplements. Vitamin B12 is produced by growing bacterial cultures and extracting it from them (Fang et al., 2017). The process is the same whether its B12 for supplements or food fortification.

Fortified foods include some breakfast cereals (check the ingredients label), yeast extracts (eg Marmite or Meridian Yeast Extract), nutritional yeast with B12, vegetable margarines, some meat alternatives and plant milks and yogurts.

If you have these foods on a daily basis, it may be sufficient but taking a supplement is a safer bet. You can take it daily, every other day or a larger dose once a week. B12 supplements usually come with much higher amounts than the 4g we need so its easy to get enough.

There are several forms of B12 and the debate over which is the best is rife. The most common forms are cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin.

Cyanocobalamin is the inactive form of B12, which needs to be activated in the stomach by binding with a compound called intrinsic factor. Thats a natural process and most people can rely on cyanocobalamin to cover their B12 needs. Cyanocobalamin is used in the more affordable supplements and fortified foods.

Methylcobalamin is the active form of Vitamin B12 and doesnt require any activation. However, its less stable and more expensive.

Then, there are two other forms of active Vitamin B12 adenosylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin.

All four forms of B12 are effective at topping-up your stores. If you are healthy, cyanocobalamin (the cheap one) is perfectly sufficient (Obeid et al., 2015). Some people prefer to take one of the active forms, as they are ready-to-use by your body and thats perfectly fine.

However, its best to combine them with cyanocobalamin once in a while your body can make any form it needs from cyanocobalamin, which is not the case with the active forms (Thakkar and Billa, 2015).

If you have a B12 deficiency, then a combination of cyanocobalamin with one of the active forms is advisable to increase your levels quickly (Obeid et al., 2015; Thakkar and Billa, 2015) and the same applies if you have a specific condition affecting your B12 metabolism (Paul and Brady, 2017).

Absorption of B12 may be hindered by several factors - tobacco smoking, kidney disease, older age, general anaesthesia, some medications - Metformin (for diabetes), anticonvulsants, antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

In these cases, its best to take methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin but your doctor may also suggest B12 injections. As for the age question, if youre over 50, you need some extra B12 as our bodies are simply not as efficient at extracting it from foods alone.

Heating food and drinks in a microwave or longer-than-very-brief cooking can also reduce the amount of vitamin B12 available from them.

For example, if you always heat your fortified plant milk in a microwave before using it, you may not be getting enough B12 if that's your only source of it. Its a good idea to supplement your B12 a couple of times a week if you normally only rely on fortified foods.

It is a type of B12-related anaemia, where the body doesnt have enough vitamin B12 to make red blood cells. It is not caused by a lack of B12 but rather by a deficiency of the intrinsic factor in the stomach needed for B12 to be activated.

This can happen if your stomach lining is weakened due to a condition like gastritis, autoimmune disease or when you have had a procedure that removed a part of the stomach.

The bacteria in our guts actually produce Vitamin B12 but unfortunately, its of no use to us.

These bacteria live in the colon, which is too far down the digestive tract for us to be able to absorb the vitamin.

There are lots of myths about seaweed and Vitamin B12(Adobe. Do not use without permission)

There is a lot of (mis)information about food containing Vitamin B12. There have been claims that certain seaweeds contain it as well as fermented foods such as miso, tempeh, kombucha and sauerkraut.

Spirulina - a popular green algae powder claimed to be bursting with nutrients. Thats true but it has one big problem - it contains something called B12 analogues. They are compounds with a structure similar to Vitamin B12 so they bind to B12 receptors in the human body but do nothing and block access for the real B12. It can become an issue if you have spirulina every day, as it can have a negative impact on your B12 levels.

Nori - seaweed that comes in sheets or as flakes to be sprinkled on meals. Research shows it may be the only non-animal source of Vitamin B12 (Watanabe et al., 2014) but more data are needed to confirm this.

Fermented foods - this is a broad category including tempeh, miso, natto, kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut and more. Its true that the bacteria used for fermentation do produce some B12 so these foods may provide tiny amounts. However, the amounts can be so negligible that it is advised not to rely solely on these products for vitamin B12.

There are some emerging foods that may be natural B12 sources, such as a specific type of duckweed. However, they arent mass-produced yet and there isnt enough data confirming we can truly obtain enough of the vitamin from them.

The awareness of the need to watch Vitamin B12 in our diet is increasing. If youre worried about your intake, you can ask your GP for a blood test. Its nothing uncommon and when you mention that youre vegan, they wont object.

A varied vegan diet supplies almost all we need but theres no getting around the B12 issue we do need a little extra help from supplements or fortified foods. We are not alone, many other population groups have low intakes and the elderly may be deficient even if they eat meat three times a day.

As our food production systems change, so do our lifestyle habits and theres nothing wrong with accepting that we need to add a tiny amount of a bacteria-produced vitamin to our diets.

With several states directing to shut gyms in the wake of growing COVID-19 scare, fitness and health experts on Monday advised gym freaks to hit the neighbourhood parks and make their home a place to work out.

They, however, cautioned to keep distance while jogging or exercising in parks and other open spaces in societies.

The Delhi government on Monday directed the closure of all gymnasiums, nightclubs, theatres, weekly markets and spas in the city till March 31, apart from gatherings of more than 50 people.

According to Sami Kazmi, a New Delhi-based certified personal trainer, if you do not have access to gym for certain days, here is how you can remain fit at home.

Perform some body-weight exercises at home like, squats, variation of lunges and push-ups, static holds like plank, squat hold, push up hold, bridge hold, etc., suggested Kazmi.

Do yoga and meditation for flexibility and calmness and dance for endurance and stamina, he added.

As the gyms remain closed, fitness experts advise that working out at home, jogging in parks and reducing caloric intake can be right alternatives to maintain healthy lifestyle.

According to Dr Sandeep Budhiraja, Group Medical Director, Max Healthcare, while the government is trying to eliminate all the possibilities of potentially risky environments where mass gathering is seen, this is a good step taken.

Earlier where huge crowd was seen in places like cinema halls, malls, school, colleges, offices etc have been ordered to remain close. Gym on the other hand, though is not a mass gathering place, but at least 20-25 people gather, Budhiraja told IANS.

Containing a smaller place with improper ventilation, many people working out at the same time, has an increased chance of infection. While hygiene remains another major factor, it is neither possible to check the complete sterility of the equipments after each use, nor it is possible to restrict anybody with cough or cold to enter into the gym, he explained.

Fitness freaks and enthusiasts can, meanwhile, opt for walking, jogging, stretching exercises or yoga in open environments like park, suggested Budhiraja.

Delhi-based Arushi Pande, a fitness enthusiast who is pursuing personal trainer and fitness certification (ISSA), said it is not impossible to maintain healthy lifestyle regardless of the current situation.

Eat home-cooked meals and work out at home. This is the best time to work on abs, go for a jog in the park or perform morning/evening walks, said Pande.

This is the best time to give your body a break and recovery time, she added.

From squats, push-up, plank and Burpees, these are the best alternatives one can opt to cut some extra fat at home without going to the gym, Diet control is also important in such situation, said Amar, a fitness enthusiast.

ICE Creates is a UK leader and specialist in behaviour change with services includingdesign and creative, organisational development and behavioural marketing to name a few.

Launched in 1999, the Birkenhead-based organisation has evolved across a variety of fields. The CEO, Stuart Jackson, takes us through a week in his working life.

My week starts with an early morning drive down the M6 with ICE Co-founder, Mandy and our office well-being dog Georgie. We head straight for the office from our home in Croglin where we spend weekends. The Monday morning drive is an opportunity to put our business brains into gear and discuss the week ahead.

I try to ringfence Mondays for team time catch-ups, exploring ideas and setting my weekly goals. We have a flat structure at ICE, so we are all hands-on-deck regardless of position. Its a great environment to be creative in.

This evening I am heading to the East Midlands to meet a client for dinner ahead of delivering a series of coaching sessions for the clients team tomorrow. I use the time on the train to go through the proposal and the brief.

My part of the ICE mission is to help leaders and organisations embrace change and prosper. We deliver Organisational Development sessions across the country based on developing leadership skills to support organisations to engage their people, unlock potential and experience business growth.

Todays session was designed specifically for our client to engage their team in the co-creation of their values and behaviours. Travelling around the country forms a large part of my working week, and I enjoy meeting partners and being hands on across the business, but I try to use my travel time wisely. This evenings journey home meant time for meditation and reflection on the days learning experience.

As much as I love being on the road, family time is precious, and I spend the evening with my girls cooking and relaxing.

Today Im heading to Birmingham with my Creative Director and co-founder to deliver a facilitation session on Leadership. Whilst I facilitate, Ian Jackson is on the boards, visually capturing the content from the discussions by visually mapping the narrative.

Our scribing service is extremely popular as the end product holds many more images at one time than the brain can, leaving a tangible take away from the session long after the event has finished.

Today I am at home on the farm in Croglin, delivering our Natural Leaders programme to support a newly formed team build and develop their leadership style. Working alongside our world-class behavioural experts, highly trained working dogs and Herdwick sheep we design new approaches to increase the effectiveness of leaders and teams.

We realised that the relationship created between a shepherd, their dog and the sheep has a very close resemblance to that of human relationships; its amazing how clearly delegates translate the experience back to the workplace, and even at home or in leisure time - when its least expected!

My main focus on a Friday is following up with clients, building and maintaining relationships, and designing and developing ideas. I always try to work from home on Fridays if time and commitments allow.

Last year ICE celebrated 20 years in business having launched as a design and comms agency in 1999. Over time, our aspiration nudged us towards work that could make a bigger impact to our society and ICE as we know it today provides an increasingly diverse portfolio that covers everything from delivering healthy lifestyle coaching for the NHS to social marketing, behaviour change and organisational and leadership development.

No two days are the same, and its this variety that has maintained our passion to make better happen for the past 20 years. We have put a lot of effort into cultivating the culture at ICE, its a great environment full of passionate and talented individuals with a common goal to make a difference. I earmark time on Fridays to send team high fives to celebrate a job well done, express thanks and generally provide recognition.

As I log off from ICE at the end of the week, its time to turn attention to the farm, working with the sheep and developing our smallholding. I wouldnt have it any other way!

How Every PC Gamer In The World Can Join The Fight Against Coronavirus – Forbes

Graphics cards are obviously a useful tool for gaming, video editing and even cryptocurrency mining. But did you know you can donate your AMD Radeon or Nvidia GPUs spare compute cycles to researching and potentially fighting against the ongoing coronavirus pandemic?

The Folding@Home "Web Control" page shows what projects your PC is dedicating resources to and gives ... [+] you control over when it's active.

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project that was founded in October 2000 at Stanford University, and it was specifically designed for disease research. It has historically been targeted at researching cancer, ALS, Parkinsons, Huntingtons and more.

The software uses the spare CPU and GPU cycles of thousands of computers globally to simulate protein folding and computational drug design.

Put another way, Folding@Home uses computer simulations to understand a proteins moving parts. Once scientists have a firm grasp on how the atoms move and interact within a protein, they can venture closer to discovering therapeutics to treat it.

But these simulations require massive computational power. And the Folding@Home team now wants to direct as much global compute power as possible at fighting SARS-CoV-2.

Viruses also have proteins that they use to suppress our immune systems and reproduce themselves. To help tackle coronavirus, we want to understand how these viral proteins work and how we can design therapeutics to stop them.

The video above demonstrates part of a simulation facilitated through Folding@Home of a protein where the atoms (shown as spheres) move aside, exposing a site where a drug can bind. The Folding@Home team has used similar simulations to expose a druggable site in the lethal Ebola virus.

The science behind what the team is doing is simultaneously fascinating and confusing (at least for the layman), and beyond the scope of this article. But I do encourage you to digest it on your own time via Greg Bowmans detailed writeup here.

The TL;DR

If you own a Windows, macOS or Linux PC that has a graphics card, you can join thousands of others around the world by donating your spare GPU cycles. This helps power the advanced simulations that could unlock a key to more deeply understanding the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and its resulting disease COVID-19.

To get started, all you have to do is download the Folding@Home client for the OS youre currently using. The linked page should automatically detect your OS and present the right installer.

After that, simply install Folding@Home. Should you need help, heres a link to detailed installation guides for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Tips For Folding@Home

While this is meaningful software for a terrific cause, it isnt the most elegant. So Ill include a few tips for getting it up and running without grinding your PC to a halt.

1) Once the software is installed and launched, it should automatically open a web page that acts as a simple controller and monitor. If it doesnt, point your browser at https://client.foldingathome.org.

If you use Folding@Home with a GPU, choose "Any disease" will tell the software to direct its ... [+] computational power to various coronavirus-related research

2) If you have a GPU and you want to dedicate those compute cycles to various coranavirus research, choose Any disease from the dropdown box labeled I support research fighting...

3) You may need to manually add your GPU to the FAHControl app, but thats pretty straightforward. Just open FAHControl, select the Configure button on the top left, navigate to the Slots tab, and check the box designated as GPU (image below). Leave all the other options alone, as the software can handle that for you.

4) When Folding@Home is active, it will put a heavy load on your system. This is normal. If youd rather the software run only when youre not using your PC, select only when idle. Ive also found that a Medium power setting strikes a good balance between the apps performance and system usability.

5) If it looks like your PC isnt getting any work, thats because theres been an unusually heavy influx of new users for the software, due in part to Nvidias call to action. You may experience some downtime, but the Folding@Home team says its working diligently to add new simulations to meet the increased demand.

No GPU? Your CPU Is Still Useful

If you dont have a dedicated graphics card, you can still make a difference. CPU-only workloads contribute to researching Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Huntingtons and cancer. The Folding@Home team is also working on adding COVID-19 simulations to CPU workloads as well, but no timeline was given for that.

Coronavirus, which the World Health Organization has now officially labeled a pandemic, is taking a toll on communities around the world. Theres currently no cure for COVID-19, but scientists are working on drugs that could help slow its spread. Fortunately, citizens can get involved in the process.

Foldit is an online video game that challenges players to fold various proteins into shapes where they are stable. Generally, folding proteins allows scientists (and citizens) to design new proteins from scratch, but in the case of coronavirus, Foldit players are trying to design the drugs to combat it. Coronavirus has a spike protein that it uses to recognize human cells, says Brian Koepnick, a biochemist and researcher with the University of Washingtons Institute for Protein Design who has been using Foldit for protein research for six years. Foldit players are designing new protein drugs that can bind to the COVID spike and block this recognition, [which could] potentially stop the virus from infecting more cells in an individual who has already been exposed to the virus.

First released in 2008, Foldit grew out of an experimental research project developed by the University of Washingtons Center for Game Science along with the Department of Biochemistry. Foldits coronavirus puzzle is the games 1,808th ever. Playerswho can work alone or in teamsare using the games puzzle system to develop new protein structures that can be tested by biochemists in the lab for use in antiviral drugs.

In Foldit, you change the shape of a protein model to optimize your score. This score is actually a sophisticated calculation of the folds potential energy, says Koepnick, adding that professional researchers use an identical score function in their work. The coronavirus puzzles are set up such that high-scoring models have a better chance of actually binding to the target spike protein. Ultimately, high-scoring solutions are analyzed by researchers and considered for real-world use.

Since its inception, over half a million people have created accounts and played Foldit, and over 2,500 players have worked on the games coronavirus puzzles so far.

[Image: courtesy Fold.it]Seth Cooper, the games lead designer and an assistant professor at Northeasterns Khoury College of Computer Sciences, says Foldit was created because the design team figured that people could come up with better solutions than the computer could, and that itd be helpful for people to interact with the 3-D compositions of protein structures to truly understand how they function.

Though these online puzzles werent designed to necessarily address a steadily growing virus such as COVID-19, its become an efficient way to conduct research on the disease safely, at home. I think its really exciting to be able to potentially help out with something like this. . . . Its the kind of thing I think we would have hoped to be able to do [when we started out], Cooper says.

In the past, Foldit players have puzzled together successful synthetic and natural protein structuressuch as ones that helped solve the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus in 2011. Some of the players who are very good at Foldit dont have backgrounds in biochemistry, but the beauty of the games design is that it makes science accessible to laypeople, and it ultimately ends up teaching nonprofessionals a lot. (A handful of Foldit players were credited as authors in a paper Cooper and his colleagues published recently.)

According to Cooper, this solution-based crowdsourcing project is a way to put video games toward a good purpose. When people are playing games, theyre solving problems anyway, so its nice to apply that brainpower to solving problems in the real world.

The Folding at Home project has been around for two decades and is still going strong. For the uninitiated, the project conducts disease research by carving out units of work that can be shipped to an individual's computer so that those machines can conduct protein folding simulations. When your computer is done crunching the numbers, it sends the results back to the Folding at Home servers and requests another unit of work.

The group has recently started assisting scientists in finding a cure for the novel Coronavirus, COVID-19. What this means is that your spare CPU cycles can be donated to the project to help find a cure to the pandemic that's impacting everyone's lives around the world. The project is aiming to recruit a million volunteers.

Helping out is easy: Simply download the program from their website, type in what name you want to use and optionally what team you want to join, and let it go. You can configure how much machine power you want to donate, and you can even click on the Configure button to setup how many CPU cores you want to provide. As a warning, if you let it consume your entire machine, it will definitely peg the CPU at 100% and generate quite a bit of heat. My workstation is powered by the Ryzen 3900x, and after initially giving the tool access to all 24 cores, I noticed the CPU temperature was extremely hot, so I limited it to only 12 of the cores, which is still plenty. The tool can also use your PC's GPU for even more processing, and that's currently the method used for the COVID-19 tests. You can search any of the projects to find out who is using the research and what it's for on the Folding at Home website.

Neowin has had our own team since 2007, so when doing the install, it'd be great if you used our team number: 55186. The front-end servers are getting hammered recently with thousands of people rushing to sign up and help fight the disease, so you'll often receive a "Bad Gateway" error when checking, but when things are working, you can check the status directly on the Folding at Home page by typing your name or team number into the search box.

The big picture: If youve got some spare GPU horsepower now is the time to put it to good use; by simulating molecular dynamics you can contribute to a dataset that could help researchers find a cure to the coronavirus.

The Pande Lab at Stanford University has been running distributed compute network Folding@home for nearly twenty years for disease research using the idle processing resources of home personal computers. Today the lab has put it its network to work to better understand coronavirus.

Folding@home combines the power of thousands of individual home systems and treats each of them as a node in a supercomputer. Each node simulates molecular dynamics like protein folding and computational drug design. In the end, all the results are combined into a dataset of interactions that are made available to researchers. According to Wikipedia, Folding@home is one of the world's fastest computing systems, with a speed of approximately 98.7petaFLOPS as of March 2020.

I personally signed up to fold this morning and my system just finished computing one work unit. Despite a detailed explanation, I understood nothing about what my computer was just doing apart from that the simulation involved exactly 62,227 atoms. Folding@home project's reputation precedes it, so while I may not know how this is beneficial in the fight against coronavirus, listed on their website is a list of academic publications using data from the networks research into cancer, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, and other conditions, and a list of very grateful researchers.

Do note, folding is not for every system. Its pretty intensive. There are three performance tiers, though as far as I can tell medium and full do the same thing: both pin my hexacore processor at 100% utilization and my RTX graphics card at about 40%. The light setting reduces the processors load to about 40% and seems to alternate between using the processor and graphics card. Memory and storage utilization are setting agnostic and very low, and the process is offline once a small initial file is downloaded.

There are no issues with system slowdown, however. The program can be set to turn on automatically when the system is idle and pause upon user activity. Although, even at full power my system hasnt slowed down at all while writing this article; folding is designed to be an adaptable workload that scales down utilization as other applications require it. And of course, you can just turn it off through a simple browser interface.
