Taiwan’s AI thermometer draws interest in SE Asia – Taiwan News

Taiwan develops AI infrared thermometer. (NHRI image) Taiwan develops AI infrared thermometer. (NHRI image)

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Many Southeast Asian nations have expressed interest in acquiring a next-generation infrared thermometer developed by Taiwan that is being touted as smart and able to reduce erroneous readings.

Designed by the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), a government-sponsored and mission-oriented medical research center, the thermometer incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The AI feature allows the device to detect people's faces before reading their temperatures, which reduces errors due to interference by radiation emitted from objects held by the individual being measured for example, a cup of hot coffee or cold drink. The feature is particularly commercially attractive at a time when countries around the world are deploying thermometers to screen suspected patients of the coronavirus.

Compared to other types of contactless thermometer, the system delivered satisfactory results in an experiment of 200 people in open spaces, said Liao Lun-de (), assistant investigator of NHRIs Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Nanomedicine. The masks, hats, and glasses the individuals wore were not found to have affected the temperature readings.

The device will sound an alarm and automatically take photos of individuals whose temperatures exceed a certain level. The alerts will be dispatched to disease control staff so they can respond in an efficient and timely fashion.

The mechanism, which integrates real-time thermal sensor software and AI neuroscience, among other technologies, is also cost-competitive, as some thermometers are priced at over NT$200,000 (US$6,653) a unit, said Liao.

The truth about veganism and cycling – Cycling Weekly

In the opening sequence of The Game Changers documentary, presenter James Wilks a former mixed martial arts champion explains that his interest in veganism started when he got injured and began genning up on recovery.

He claims to have spent 1,000 hours researching recovery-boosting nutrition. One thousand hours? Assuming he studied 9am to 5pm without lunch breaks, thats a full six months of solid reading. Anyway, amid these mountains of paperwork, he stumbled upon an article purporting to prove that Roman gladiators (the original professional fighters) ate a mostly plant-based diet.

Wilkss mind is blown. Over the rest of the film, he advances the case, in no uncertain terms, that eating only plant-based foods is better for recovery, health and crucially sporting performance. It was no surprise, then, The Game Changers garnered enormous attention, even among ordinarily hard-headed cyclists.

Full disclosure to kick off: I eat a mostly plant-based diet; Im not a strict vegan, but I avoid meat and dairy products most of the time (largely for ethical reasons). If my position were prone to bias, it would be skewed in favour of The Game Changers its message that veganism boosts sporting performance is good news for me. My job here, though, is to be unswervingly objective in answering this question: will going vegan make you a fitter, faster cyclist?

Adam Hansen cut animal products out of his diet three years ago

Quite early in the film, we meet Dotsie Bausch, the seven-time US national champion and Olympic silver medallist. This is the segment for the cyclists. Bausch tells us that she was in her mid-30s and ready to retire when she switched to a vegan diet, from which point she unexpectedly just kept getting better pointing out that she went from struggling to leg-sled 300lb to pushing 585lb in sets of 60 reps.

She relives the pinnacle of her career: silver in the team pursuit at the London Games, where she stood on the podium aged 39.5 years Im still the oldest person in my event to even go to the Olympic Games.

The film implies the Americans late-career improvements were the result of her switch to a vegan diet. However, it doesnt take much research to discover Bausch took up cycling relatively late, aged 26, as part of her recovery from an eating disorder. In light of which, the fact she was still improving at 35 was perhaps not so much proof of plant power as the natural development of a huge talent that for many years had lain dormant and/or been hampered by improper fuelling. Of course, this is to take nothing away from her remarkable achievements.

I contacted Bausch by email and asked what made her so confident her improvements were the result of diet over and above other factors.

Truly, this was the one thing that I changed, she replied. My coach and my training stayed consistent it was the diet change that gave me this advantage. And, lets be honest, I wasnt getting any younger when my body should have been resisting and slowing me down, I was actually getting fitter, stronger and more resilient.

Bausch is a passionate advocate of veganism, and as a plant-powered athlete has become a professional influencer on the topic (dotsiebauschusa.com). Her anecdotal evidence is compelling but is it supported by hard science?

While going vegan widens your exploration margins, there are a few things you need to think about if you are considering veganism:

Protein power

You have to ensure that you have enough protein in your diet to meet your bodys demands and requirements. Good news is, you can readily find all the vitamins and minerals you need from your vegetarian diet.

To ensure that you get the full complements of proteins, you can consider eating varied sources. You can eat beans, seeds, pulses, nuts and even grains.

Calcium intake

Now that dairy will no longer be an option, you need to figure out how to add calcium to your diet. There are consequential health impacts of low calcium in diets including high risk of osteoporosis - which is higher in vegans.

You can easily incorporate calcium in your diet by thinking about what you are eating. A good place to start would be to get fortified dairy alternative milks instead of the unprocessed nut milks that are not calcium fortified.

Other nutrients

There are nutritional concerns that are associated with having a vegan diet.

Being low in iodine is a common side effect of a vegan diet and it can cause thyroid problems. To curb this, you can consider using iodide salt to cook. Another way would be to throw in sea vegetables to your diet from time to time.

For zinc, you may need to include dried beans in your diet as they are rich in the mineral. For omega 3 fatty acids, you can consider adding some flax seeds, soybean oil or walnuts to your diet.

Iron levels

If you have a history of anemia, you may have to consult your doctor before you start your vegan diet since consuming iron in a complete plant based diet can be a challenge.

Burger King NZ Faces Calls To Go Vegan As It Falls Into Receivership – Plant Based News

Lack of sales during lockdown has hit Burger King NZ hard (Photo: Adobe. Do not use without permission)

Burger King New Zealand has gone into receivership - leaving 2,600 jobs hanging in the balance according to reports.

The chain, like other eateries, has suffered as a result of the coronavirus.

Now vegan charity PETA has written to the outlet, suggesting it 'takes this opportunity to reinvent the chain as a revolutionary, all-vegan business, focused solely on a kinder, more environmentally friendly plant-based menu'.

The chain's staff were told about the financial struggles in a letter from Burger King chief executive Michelle Alexander.

She wrote: "As you know we have applied and received the Government wage subsidy, and this is assisting to pay all staff during the lockdown, however with no sales since lockdown commenced, the Company does not currently have the cash flow to fund trade creditors and rent payments."

PETA cited the chain's Rebel Whopper as proof demand is growing for animal-free food (Photo: Burger King)

Now Emily Rice, PETA Australia's senior outreach and partnerships manager, has reached out to the ailing chain, saying that ditching animal products would be beneficial to the environment and animals, as well as meet growing demand for plant-based food.

"Vegan business is big business, with demand continuing to grow, and the global vegan food market set to reach an estimated $31.4 billion by 2026," she wrote."

She added: "Receivership need not be negative. Not only is a global shift towards veganism necessary if we wish to make meaningful headway when it comes to avoiding environmental catastrophe and future global health crises, while respecting our fellow animals, it's also simply good business."

Burger King has not yet publicly responded to the letter.

April is Rosacea Awareness Month! . Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition in which there is inflammation of the mid face. Rosacea can appear as a combination of persistent redness, skin thickening, flushing, bumps, prominent blood vessels and/or eye irritation. . For many patients, these symptoms may be constant, while others are able to associate a trigger such as: changes in weather, sun exposure, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, emotional stress, or exercise. . The reason why there is an entire month dedicated to this is because approximately 16 million Americans suffer from rosacea and most don't know it! Public education on the condition (like this post!) may help someone seek medical attention before it worsens. . For me personally, as a dermatologist, it is important to provide accurate education on this topic so that I can do my part in promoting greater social acceptance and understanding of rosacea. . General tips for patients with rosacea are to keep a diary to better understand possible triggering factors, always wear sunscreen and to consider gentle skincare and makeup products. . While there is not a "cure" for rosacea, there are MANY treatment options that a dermatologist can prescribe depending on your specific type and symptoms including topical and oral medications as well as laser therapy. . Below are some over the counter products that I love for rosacea-prone skin. There are so many to choose from so this list is not exhaustive! These should not be used as a substitute for seeking medical advice! Finding a dermatologist to help you treat your rosacea in a multimodal approach is so incredibly important! . @vanicreamofficial free & clear liquid cleanser @drjart cicapair tiger grass cream @deciem azelaic acid suspension @larocheposayusa toleriane double repair face moisturizer and Rosaliac AR Intense Visible Redness Reducing Serum @smashboxcosmetics Photo Finish Reduce Rendess Primer @dermablendpro quick-fix color correcting concealer and flawless creator lightweight foundation . Every Kid Healthy Week is a no-go, so parents need to step up – Kingsport Times News

Every Kid Healthy Week is observed in the last week of April every year. Its formed to celebrate school health and wellness achievements. The week spotlights efforts schools make to improve the health and wellness of their students and to highlight the link between nutrition, physical activity and learning. Studies have shown that healthy kids are better prepared to learn.

KIDS UNDER PRESSURE

Health and educational injustices persist across the country, as children in underserved communities face more significant health and safety risks daily. One in three children is overweight or obese. How Long Will Coronavirus Survive on Surfaces? – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

While COVID-19 is believed to be spread mainly by inhaling droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, these droplets can also land on surfaces. A healthy person can then unknowingly touch those surfaces and the next thing you know the virus has gotten a free ride to wherever and whatever the person touches next.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

Often times, peoples hands can transport the viral particles to different surfaces, even the face, where it can enter your body through your eyes, mouth or nose. (Hence why health officials are screaming at us not to touch our faces and to wash our hands.)

Still, viral particles are making their rounds. (Those mangy freeloaders!) We asked infectious disease specialist Frank Esper, MD, to weigh in on how long the coronavirus can survive on surfaces and what we should know to keep ourselves safe.

Thevirus typically doesnt like to live on surfaces that have a lot of holes ormicroscopic little grooves, nooks or crannies, explains Dr. Esper. It likes surfacesthat are very smooth, like door knobs.

Early research has demonstrated that the viruss survival depends on the type of surface it lands on. The live virus can survive anywhere between three hours and seven days, depending on the material.

Heres how long the virus typically lasts on common surfaces:

Its important to note that the amount of live virus decreases over time on surfaces. So the risk of infection from touching something that had the virus on it for a few days would lessen.

As you can imagine cardboard has little microscopic holes in it, so the virus doesnt like it very much, says Dr. Esper. And it doesnt last too long on fabric either, typically less than a day.

Viruses cant survive independently. The whole point of a virus is to invade a living host, hijack it and produce more virus babies. So when an infected person coughs and viral droplets land on surfaces around them, its not exactly the outcome that the virus had hoped for.

If a virus lands on something like a chair or table, it starts dying pretty quick, explains Dr. Esper. We may be able to find some viable virus after a few days, but its thousands of times less than what was originally deposited by the cough. As soon as the virus hits something thats not alive and certainly not a human, its not going to do very well.

So just because the virus is detectable on a surface doesnt necessarily mean that theres enough there to make someone sick. Scientists are still working to figure out what the infectious dose requirement is to actually cause an infection.

With online shopping and deliveries now reaching holiday-level busyness, you might be wondering if your mail or packages are carrying the coronavirus. Some people even let their mail or parcels sit for a few days before opening.

Paper and cardboard are very porous, says Dr. Esper. The virus doesnt like surfaces like that. It likes smooth, even things.

Coronavirus also doesnt particularly like to be out in the elements. Certainly, many viruses seem to circulate better in cold weather rather than warm weather, but if the virus is not in another person, its not going to do well.

Im not particularly concerned about catching the virus through the mail, says Dr. Esper. Were certainly studying it and well be able to understand a lot more as time goes on, but the answer is no, I dont think people need to be concerned about getting the virus through the mail.

NAD+'s Role in Keeping A Healthy Immune System

As people continue to cope with the pandemic, most people have thought about their immune system but have not considered the role NAD+ plays and how it can affect their response to a deadly virus.

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a critical coenzyme found in every cell of one's body and helps the immune system function at its best by repairing and remodeling cells.

A viral infection causes free radicals to form which causes DNA damage. In order to repair DNA, the body needs high levels of NAD+. When people are young, high levels of NAD+ are present in their cells, but as people age, those levels deplete and can make people more susceptible to infection.

NAD+ IV therapy is a good solution to replenish one's NAD+ levels in the fight against viruses but it has many additional benefits. It is usually recommended in a series of 3 weekly treatments by LifeGaines, but will be customized based on each patient's specific needs. The NAD+ IV therapy is a slow drip process, so it takes time to enter into your system, generally 3-4 hours per treatment. NAD+ IV therapy can;

Scientists just discovered a new surprising benefit of coffee – Ladders

Its becoming increasingly difficult to consider caffeine a vice with everything we now know about the multifaceted benefits linked to habitual coffee consumption.

From longevity to a healthy gut microbe to curbing obesity and preventing dementia, java is an undeniable contender in new-age diet science. This isnt to suggest that all of its rewards are tangled up in dense medical literature about diseases and mortality rates.

In fact, a new study conducted by researchers at Aarhus University concludes that a single couple of coffee dramatically enhances our sensitivity to sweetness and diminishes our sensitivity to bitterness.

Chemosensory sensitivity has great variation between individuals. This variation complicates the chemosensory diagnostics, as well as the creation of a meal with universally high hedonic value. To ensure accurate characterization of chemosensory function, a common rule of thumb is to avoid food/beverages one hour before chemosensory testing. However, the scientific foundation of this time of fast remains unclear, the authors of the new paper write. Our findings provide the first evidence of how coffee impacts short-term taste sensitivity and consequently the way we sense and perceive food following coffee intake-an an important insight in the context of gastronomy, as well as in chemosensory testing procedures.

The researchers began with a study pool consisting of 156 test subjects.

Each had their sense of smell and taste analyzed before and after being administered a single cup of caffeinated coffee. Although there were no observable alterations to their sense of smell after coffee consumption, the subjects sense of taste was profoundly affected.

Via self-reports, the respondents reacted more readily to sweet substances while being less attuned to bitter ones. Caffeine didnt seem to be influencing these outcomes, considering they were successfully replicated after the researchers supplied participants with decaffeinated coffee.

Its probably some of the bitter substances in the coffee that create this effect. This may explain that if you enjoy a piece of dark chocolate with your coffee, its taste is much milder, because the bitterness is downplayed and the sweetness is enhanced, says study author, Alexander Wieck Fjldstad. We already know that our senses have an effect on each other, but its a surprise that our registration of sweetness and bitterness is so easily influenced.

Uncovering the intricate dynamics that different dietary agents share with another opens avenues for other important fields of research.

There are a host of foods confirmed to be conducive to healthy aging and development that might be consumed more frequently if paired with tempering elements.

Coffee compliments powerful sources of protein like nuts and almonds perfectly, just as a glass of grapefruit juice extends the half-life of caffeine.

More research in this area could have significance for how we regulate the way in which we use sugar and sweeteners as food additives. Improved knowledge can potentially be utilized to reduce sugar and calories in our food, which would be beneficial for a number of groups, including those who are overweight and diabetes patients, Wieck Fjldstad explains.

What Is a Microcurrent Facial and How Does It Work? – NuFace Review – Women’s Health

If theres anything Ive learned from years of interviewing dermatologists, estheticians, and other skincare experts, its that prevention is more powerful than any skincare product. Just as we exercise to stay healthy and avoid disease later in life, we apply skincare to prevent environmental damage (the anti-aging benefit is a bonus!). And, if putting on sunscreen is cardio, doing microcurrent treatments is weight lifting.

Microcurrent uses low-grade electrical current to train facial muscles to look more lifted, firm, and tightened. If youre wondering if this is even legit, yes. Very. Originally introduced in medicine in the 1980s, microcurrent was first approved by the FDA as a treatment for Bells palsy and muscle paralysis. Now, its every facialists secret weapon.

Ive had microcurrent treatments done professionally before at fancy spas using expensive equipment, but latelyand out of necessity while in quarantine with the rest of the world Ive fallen back in love with doing at-home microcurrent facials with my palm-sized NuFace device. With the help of Tera Peterson, esthetician and co-founder of NuFace, I became a pro.

In fact, you shouldnt feel anything during the five to 10 minute treatment. Peterson suggests I use NuFace in the morning, after cleansing skin. To start, I apply a quarter-size amount of conducting gel around my collarbone, neck, gliding the NuFace on level five (high) in an upward motion. Each glide is five seconds, after which the device conveniently beeps as a guide for when to follow up with another glide in the next section.

I do this three times per area, continuing to glide upwards all the way up the contours of my jawline, cheeks, and above my brows toward my hairline. PS: There shouldnt be any actual tugging on your skin.

Go slow with each glide, Peterson says. Think about a bicep curl. Were delivering all of that microcurrent to this area of the face, which is in turn going to make the muscle stronger and tighter. For an extra boost, I detach the main NuFace head and use the Eye and Lip Enhancer attachment. It has two tiny prongs for delicate areas that I glide it below my lower lashes (to depuff) and to raise my brows for five second intervals (to lift).

Courtesy

After just five minutes of doing the microcurrent treatment, I can see a visible difference: My eyes are less puffy. My jawline is sharper and more defined. My brows are way lifted. My skin looks much firmer and brighter (or toned as my boyfriend put it when I showed him a before and after photo. See? Even his beauty-clueless self noticed!). Over on my Instagram stories, people piled my DMs when I posted before-and-afters saying they could really see a difference and wanted to know my secret, immediately.

While the product doesnt come cheap at $325, I was still enthusiastic about recommending it to people because I think of it as a major investment in my skin health. You could pay $800 for an injectable down the line...or $300 now and maybe not even have to prod your face with needles later on. As Peterson puts it, Microcurrent is all gain, without the pain.

Theres no set prescribed usage, but for results youll want to do microcurrent treatments three times a week, five minutes each time. Its all about consistency. Think of NuFace like exercise. Were working with muscle reeducation, Peterson says. Even if you say I have such a busy schedule and you stop using NuFace for a week, then start it back up, thats fine.

I kept up three times a week for a couple weeks now and already see a major difference that encourages me to keep it up, although I will admit its tempting to be lazy. Sometimes I just want to slap on SPF and be done with it. But, the awake and just-went-on-vacation-and-slept-10-hours look I get right after a treatment, and the long term benefits like stimulating collagen production, are supremely worth it.

How to Clean Out Beauty Products In Between Seasons According to Experts – STYLECASTER

Spring cleaning shouldnt be limited to your wardrobe. Youll also want to give your beauty stash a much-needed reboot once the temperatures start to rise. And yes, youll probably think about cleaning out your makeup bag first, as we all know broken blushes and old lipsticks tucked inside probably arent worth keeping anymore. However, its important to note that knowing how to clean out beauty products should extend to skincare and haircare products too.

If you need to hit the reset button, we tapped a makeup artist, an esthetician, a board-certified dermatologist, and some celebrity hairstylists to break down all those need-to-know hacks on how to rev up your routine asap. From expiration dates to cleaning tips, read on below to get your routine in tip-top shape before summer comes knocking.

Look For Expiration Dates On Your Products

If you didnt already know, using expired makeup can wreak havoc on your skin. According to certified makeup artist Naseeha Khan, the bacteria harbored in makeup can cause breakouts and inflammation.

With this in mind, she advised paying extra attention to expiration dates on the label, as it signifies when a product should be tossed out.

You can find expiry indicators on makeup products, usually on the label near the bottom, where you can also find the company, recycling, and other information, she said The symbol is an open jar with a number on itthis number indicates how many months post opening the product will last.

Toss Makeup Items Carefully

However, if you cant spot an expiration date on your product label, Khan explained that there are several rules of thumb to keep in mind when youre cleaning out your makeup bag.

Makeup products like mascara, for example, should be discarded after three months, she said, while eyeliners should be discarded after six months.Liquid products are more susceptible to bacteria build-up, which is why it is important to replace mascara this frequently, she said. Try to discard eyeliner products after six months.

Maybelline.

Similarly, lipstick and foundation products should be tossed within a 12 to 18-month timeframe, as Khan suggested that these items are usually in direct contact with your mouth, lips, and face.

Although they are in direct contact with your lips and mouth, the solid formula of most lip products (toss after 18 months) allows for longer usage lives, she noted. Be sure to discard foundation products after 12 months, as they can lose consistency and begin to smell.

Clean And Evaluate Tools And Brushes Carefully

Although its tempting to apply the spring cleaning concept to makeup brushes once a year, Khan said that its best to always clean brushes weekly to prevent bacteria from being spread between your skin.

Additionally, she advised taking the spring months to evaluate the condition of your tools, as brushes and makeup sponges can lose efficacy over time.

Beakey.

Reusable makeup sponges should be replaced once every three months so once a season may be a perfect schedule to follow for this, Khan explained. However, if you notice your brush bristles are frayed or shedding, it may be time to invest in new tools.

Refresh Your Tools

Aside from giving your makeup brushes a good clean, esthetician Leila Aalam recommended giving your facial tools the same attention, as facial brushes, tweezers, and loofahs should also be cleaned and tossed accordingly.

Baimei.

Pay attention to how long you are using your facial brushes, tweezers, and loofahs, Aalam said. Tweezers can be used for a longer time period as long as they are cleaned and disinfected after each use.

Clean Out Your Space

Additionally, she stressed the importance of cleaning the cups, bins, and jars where you store any tweezers. Doing so, she added, cuts down on bacteria overgrowth, and keeps your medicine cabinet or vanity clean.

I like to remove all the bins and jars from its shelving, and wipe down the area with a damp cloth( or a Lysol wipe) to remove any bacteria overgrowth, she explained.

Start To Transition Your Skincare Regimen

As natural is the change of seasons, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Claire Chang, MD, said so are the changes that occur in your skin. Warmer months mean more heat, humidity, and sunshine, she added, making it wise to transition your skincare routine accordingly.

Compared to cooler seasons, skin during the spring and summer months tends to have higher oil and sweat production, increased hydration, and more visible pores, said Chang.

No7.

To make some easy tweaks to your skin-care regimen, Chang suggested starting by swapping your thick moisturizers for light-weight day creams that contain SPF protection.

Given you may be spending more time outdoors, the No7 Restore & Renew Multiaction Face & Neck Day Cream SPF 30 is a great lightweight day cream that is perfect for the spring and summer, she explained. It has SPF 30, and contains a powerful combination of anti-aging peptides, pro-retinol, and antioxidants.

Make Sure You Use SPF

If you havent been using a daily sunscreen product already, Chang said that now is a good time to start, as sun exposure is one of the most important culprits in accelerating skin aging.

Sun exposure produces free radicals, breaks down collagen, and increases pigmentation in the skin, she explained. Along with diligent sun protection, I recommend using antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients throughout the summer to counteract these effects.

Coppertone.

To pick a decent sunscreen product that can stand tall against harmful UVA/UVB rays, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests picking a broad-spectrum product with SPF30 and water-resistant protection.

However, no matter what kind of sunscreen you choose, youll definitely want to reapply your block frequently throughout the day, as the AAD explained that water-resistant sunscreen only lasts for 40 to 80 minutes.

Dont Skip Out On Retinol Products

If you took a break from using retinoids during the winter due to excessive dryness, now is the time to start using them again, according to Chang.

RoC.

Retinols and retinoids are one of the most powerful evidence-backed anti-aging ingredients on the market, she explained. And although you wont want to use them during the daytime, they still can keep applied before bedtime for best results.

Check PAO Labels On Your Products

Just like you would check expiration dates on other cosmetic products, celebrity hairstylist Annagjid Kee Taylor, told StyleCaster that youll also want to check the PAO (period after opening) date on your shampoo, hair mask, or leave-in products. If your product is past this date listed on the label, then its probably a good idea to throw it out, she added.

Most brands put a PAO (Period After Opening) on the products to give you an indication of how long they will last after you first open them, Taylor said. However, some hair products tend to last a bit longer, as products that are well-contained (aerosols, sprays, etc.), for example, usually have a longer shelf life.

Keep A Watchful Eye On Styling Products

And since styling products (think gels, creams, and pomades) are exposed more to open air (and your fingers!), Taylor explained that they will need to be replaced more quickly, as these products are exposed to germs and bacteria, and can easily become moldy if you arent careful.

Clean Your Hairbrushes Often

However, celebrity makeup artist Ricardo Rojas told StyleCaster that there really isnt a strict rule concerning how long to keep your hairbrushes. Alas, he still advises cleaning them regularly, in order to prevent you from tossing them out.

Wet Brush.

The best way to extend the life of your hairbrush is by removing the hair after each use, using a tail comb to rack out the hair, Rojas said. You will know the brush is working by making sure the bristles are still straight up and doing the work.

Letter: What we can learn from Norway about healthy living – INFORUM

One of the reasons the country of Norway consistently ranks as one of the worlds healthiest is the longstanding tradition of friluftsliv, or open air living. Perhaps during this time of COVID-19-imposed social distancing and restricted gathering, now is the time to enjoy some friluftsliv.

What do Norwegians mean by open air living? Beyond the requirement of being in an outdoor setting, the concept has four elements:

First, the purpose is not sports competition, but just enjoying the outdoors. Sports competition is no replacement for friluftsliv.

Second, one must enjoy green and blue spaces (grass, trees and water), so it requires getting away from streets and buildings.

Third, it requires a change of setting. So, if you already live on an open acreage, you need to find a place that is different from your daily setting, to refresh your perspective.

Finally, you need to use your own engine -- walking, biking, paddle-boarding, etc. no motors are allowed. In the face of the COVID-19 epidemic, lets guard our health, and refresh our perspective, by laying hold of friluftsliv.

Healthy Living: The Right Team, Timing and Treatment – 9&10 News

Four-year-old Michelle Lowry is all about learning her letters and numbers, but her parents didnt know if they could count on seeing this day.

What they thought was a ting bug bite on Michelles neck turned out to be a tumor.

After a battery of tests, doctors at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles diagnosed Michelle with a soft tissue sarcoma.

Because of the location, surgery and radiation were ruled out. Doctors used a new precise cancer panel called OncoKids to read Michelles DNA and RNA. The panel revealed Michelle would be a perfect candidate for a targeted new drug, larotrectinib.

Doctors worked fast to get Michelle in a new clinical trial.

Two months later Michelles tumor had shrunk by 60%. Two years later the tumor is undetectable.

Based on other positive outcomes like Michelles, the FDA granted accelerated approval of larotrectinib.

OncoKids is the first cancer panel designed specifically for childrens cancers and can detect genetic alterations for pediatric cancers, including leukemia, solid tumors, sarcomas and brain tumors.

Spotlight: Creating the best home during and after COVID-19: Are you living in a healthy sanctuary? – GuelphToday

When travel is no longer an option given the need for social distancing, the question arises: is your home the healthiest place to spend 24/7 riding out a pandemic?

What about life after COVID-19?

Living in a clean, safe environment is a key contributor to your overall health. And during self-isolation and the COVID-19 crisis, the benefits of a healthy living space have been amplified. For many, a safe home means taking the necessary steps to keep surfaces disinfected, decluttering, and checking the efficiency and cleanliness of critical HVAC systems.

This is a great base to optimize your home environment, but more can be done.

Now more than ever, were looking to our homes for our protection, our health and our safety, said David Brix, President of Terra View Homes and homebuilder who specializes in energy-efficient, net-zero homes.

"What we live in matters, not just for the environment but for our health, and I don't think enough people know about the health benefits that net-zero homes can provide for families. A healthy home is one that prioritizes the well-being of its occupants, and every feature in our net-zero homes work together to achieve this."

Net-zero homes are designed with energy efficiency and air quality in mind. They are highly insulated and extremely air-tight, and theyre built with heat recovery ventilators to improve air quality, maintain consistent temperatures, filter indoor air and reduce drafts. Beyond this our homes are built with as many low VOC (volatile organic compounds) as possible. Its a home designed to reduce a homeowners carbon footprint by producing as much clean energy as it uses on an annual basis.

Were proud of our net-zero communities and the sustainable, healthy and comfortable living theyre providing our homeowners with, said Brix.

As much as Guelphites can benefit from net-zero homes as a healthy living option, Terra View also wants local residents who are staying home during this time to consider taking the necessary steps to create the safest and healthiest environment possible.
