Transhumanism: Zoltan Istvan Forsees Technological Self …

Zoltan Istvan on The Rubin Report in October 2016.(Screengrab via YouTube)Zoltan Istvan foresees self-perfection and immortality through technology. What could possibly go wrong?

Every now and then, our electoral system produces one of those quintessentially American characters who coopt the energy of the presidential voting cycle to become national celebrities or elevate an obscure social movement into greater popular visibility. In the current cycle, New Age guru Marianne Williamson, who popularized A Course in Miracles, fits the archetype. So does entrepreneur Andrew Yang. But for my money, the transhumanist proselytizer Zoltan Istvan Gyurko (professionally known as Zoltan Istvan) is the champion at harnessing the energy generated by electoral politics to both make himself a known media personality and promote his philosophical obsessions.

For those who may still be unaware, transhumanism is a futuristic social movement that (all but) worships technology as the means of attaining the long-held human dream of immortality and the more modern yearning for radical individual bodily self-transformation. Want to have the eyesight of a hawk and the superpowers of cartoon characters, and live longer than a redwood tree? Transhumanism predicts that these dreams will come true when a crescendo of unstoppable technological advances known as the Singularity unleashes the power to transform humanity into a post-human species.

Until recently, transhumanism advocacy was limited mostly to the high academy and the speculations of futurism conferences. But then along came Istvan. With few resources beyond the financial security earned through small-scale real-estate development and his indefatigable genius for self-promotion, in 2016 Istvan propelled himself and his movement into international notoriety by touring the United States as a candidate for president on the Transhumanist Party ticket, promising to end death as he drove across the country in the immortality bus designed to look like a coffin. It was a great gimmick that worked like a charm. Istvan was interviewed countless times and featured in stories in some of the worlds most prominent media, including the New York Times and The Guardian.

In 2018 he was less successful running for governor of California on the Libertarian Party ticket. But, never one to miss a chance at elevating his prominence, in this presidential cycle Istvan is running as a Republican, challenging President Trump for the nomination under the campaign slogan Upgrading America.

As, respectively, a committed proponent and a persistent critic of transhumanism, Istvan and I have jousted publicly for years, but always without rancor. We finally spent some quality time over lunch recently when his campaign brought him to Washington, D.C., where, as part of his no publicity is bad publicity approach to advocacy and self-promotion, he agreed to an open, on-the-record interview.

Istvan first became interested in immortality in college when researching an essay on cryogenics. But his commitment to the cause became indelible in a moment of terror. In 2003, Istvan was working as a video journalist for National Geographic, covering a story about Vietnamese farmers dangerous harvest of metal from unexploded American ordnance. When he barely missed stepping on a landmine, he had a sudden epiphany. I felt like a nuclear bomb went off in my head, he recalled. Instead of covering war stories and reporting on the suffering of humanity, I had the revelation that I should eliminate suffering altogether. He quit working as a journalist, joined the nascent life-extension movement, and penned his novel, The Transhumanist Wager which he describes as a transhumanism Atlas Shrugged.

Since those early days, Istvan has become the popular face of transhumanism. He has given thousands of media and podcast interviews and boosted transhumanism in a barrage of columns, including in mainstream publications such as the New York Times, Wired, Psychology Today, the Huffington Post, and Vice. He is also an international lecturer.

Most prominent transhumanists are atheists, as was Istvan, a lapsed Catholic, when I first met him in 2014 at a transhumanism and religion conference in Berkeley. He has since adopted a soft agnosticism, embracing what is known as theistcideist theory, which he describes as the belief that a super intelligence created all that is but committed suicide to give free will to the universe. That sounds like a distinction without much of a difference to me, since it leaves humanity wholly on our own. In any event, Istvan fervently believes that our most urgent duty as a species is to save ourselves materially from the existential obliteration of death and that government must focus on both promoting and protecting that quest.

During our long conversation, I told Istvan that his views dont sound very conservative or Republican. He laughed and insisted that while he opposes born-again fundamentalism, he is fiscally very conservative. He believes in lower taxes, less regulation, tort reform, smaller government, a balanced-budget constitutional amendment, and providing tax incentives to induce people to live healthier lives. He is against the Green New Deal and its push to cut carbon emissions through government fiat, preferring the deployment of technological remedies such as geo-engineering and green energy. Moreover, he insisted, he is trying to save the transhumanist movement from what he describes as the fervent leftwingism of Silicon Valley and the socialistic views that he worries have come to permeate transhumanist advocacy generally.

But conservatism rejects utopianism. It rejects dangerous superman and eugenics theories. Believing in the equal dignity of every human being, conservatism is ultimately anti-authoritarian. Yet all these disquieting beliefs and approaches permeate transhumanist advocacy from top to bottom.

And that includes many of Istvans policy proposals. Beneath conservative planks such as requiring all immigrants to become proficient in English, the libertarian belief in open borders, and the less conservative idea that the government should provide a universal income funded by leasing federal lands, his policy views are radically transgressive and antithetical to human liberty. In this regard, I reminded him that when we first met at the religion seminar, he told the audience that war is justified against any government that thwarts transhumanism. He told me he is a bit embarrassed by putting it that starkly, but yes, he still believes that violence in the name of transhumanism is justified in certain circumstances. I am sort of an authoritarian libertarian, he laughed.

Indeed, he is. The more one digs into Istvans policy proposals, the wilder they become. He wants society to prepare for awarding civil rights for future advanced sapient beings like AI, conscious robots, cyborgs and genetically created sapient beings. He proposes a constitutional amendment to prohibit laws interfering with citizens pursuit of health and longevity, creating a right to genetic editing of progeny, cloning, and other forms of what he calls radical science. As just one example, such a right would allow parents to germline-engineer their progeny for health reasons or to fulfill their eugenic desires, creating genomic alterations that would flow down the generations.

Until very recently, he supported government licensing of parents, but hearkening to some blowback on that issue, he backed off that proposal. He would promulgate state regulatory protection over what could become a process of manufacturing humans including custom design, special order, quality and inventory control all of which are core goals of the transhumanist social revolution.

Istvan also wants to roll back privacy norms. This would include the governments making massive use of high-tech surveillance, including facial-recognition cameras, drones, robots, AI scanners, and other technology, in public places so that criminals are caught before they can carry out their harm (he adds lamely that this plan will protect gun owners while protecting those who are afraid of or dislike guns).

Never mind that such all-encompassing surveillance would enable the effectuation of an all-encompassing tyranny. China has already demonstrated the fascistic possibilities by introducing a social credit system, in which facial-recognition technologies, artificial intelligence, GPS, and other means of high-tech surveillance track individual behavior and social associations. Those branded by computer algorithms with a low social-credit score face societal excommunication, including job loss, the inability to rent an abode, even exclusion from public transportation.

That isnt all. Istvan also proposes cerebral reconditioning as an alternative to the death penalty, and, one presumes, other traditional forms of penal justice. Anyone who thinks these technologies would be a good idea has never read 1984 or Brave New World.

Why should we take any of this seriously? After all, transhumanism is hardly mainstream, and Istvan doubts his candidacy which is mostly self-funded will last much beyond Super Tuesday (although, knowing him, he will find some other way to harness the centrifugal energy of the presidential contest to boost himself and his ideas).

Heres why. Istvan is just the popularizer; behind him, some of the worlds richest and most powerful people fund transhumanism research and advocacy, including Googles Ray Kurzweil and Teslas Elon Musk. Moreover, it isnt the unlikely coming of the Singularity that makes transhumanism a perilous social force. I truly doubt we will ever upload our minds into computers to live forever in the Cloud, a core eschatological transhumanist belief. Rather, it is transhumanisms explicit utopianism and denigration of human exceptionalism that cause ones neck hair to stand on end.

Attention must be paid. The movement is growing and often receives laudatory press. For example, Time published a fawning profile of Kurzweils quest to live indefinitely under the serious title 2045: The Year Man Becomes Immortal. As society secularizes and atheism grows, transhumanisms ideology of radical self-liberation is increasingly resonating. People who have lost traditional faith are looking for new sources of meaning, purpose, and hope. Indeed, committed transhumanists believe in their ageless post-human future with a fervor that borders on fundamentalist religion.

That kind of unyielding devotion, driven in part by a terror of death, has power to profoundly corrode the core liberty values of Western society. If we are going to preserve a culture founded on the Judeo-Christian ideal of equal human dignity and the concomitant obligation of individual behavioral restraint transhumanism must be rejected in our public policies, spurned intellectually, and shunned in the ways we live our individual lives. And that starts with taking the movement as seriously as do its adherents.

So, as we chuckle at Istvans eccentric campaigns, let us not lose sight of the fact that many people are being seduced by the radical values the movement fosters. And therein lies the rub. Transhumanism will never kill death. But it could be the death knell of human freedom.

Transhumanism: Zoltan Istvan Forsees Technological Self ...

Transhumanisms Assumptions and their Implications …

The previous article in this series summarized the history of Transhumanism and outlined some of its different forms. Although in its more extreme forms it sounds like science fiction, parts of its program are already in place and there are scientists who are diligently working to make more of it a reality. It is thus important for us to think through the implications of these proposals before they are carried out and to ask not simply whether we can do them but whether we should.

Transhumanist Assumptions

Lets start with some basics of the Transhumanist worldview. Transhumanism is based on materialist metaphysics, that is, it assumes that matter and energy are all that exist. Our minds are thus a product of our brains, which are nothing more than highly complex computers. As a result, it is possible to create true Artificial Intelligence (AI) which will be able to do everything our brains do everything our brains can do. Microsoft and Elon Musk have teamed up to create advanced AI that will move in this direction. Eventually, just as our brains evolved, AI will be able to rewrite itself into more and more sophisticated forms which we might not be able to understand ourselves, leading to the Technological Singularity (the development of super-intelligence) discussed in the previous article.

To the Singularitarian and some other Transhumanists, human consciousness is the product of the brains calculations. Thus, when machines are sufficiently powerful and sophisticated, they will become conscious and self-aware themselves.

Given that there is no essential difference between our brains and computers, according to this way of thinking, we should be able to create interfaces between our brain and the super-intelligent computer network, allowing us immediate access to all the information on whatever replaces the internet. We will also have all the capabilities of super-intelligence. Since other people will be connected into this system, we will also have access to their minds, creating a collective consciousness for humanity united with the super-intelligence of the machines in technological nirvana in which we experience the fundamental unity of all things (or at least of all minds).

Technognosticism

Further, if all these assumptions are correct, a form of Immortalism naturally follows. Since the mind is a product of the brain, once the brain wears out, the mind would normally disappear, but since our brain is no different from a computer, it should be possible for us to upload it into a sufficiently complex computer and thus allow us conscious survival beyond death, perhaps in the technological nirvana. While some forms of Immortalism focus on making our bodies deathless, in this case only our consciousness would be immortal. This is thus a kind of Technognosticism, where what is ultimately important and what survives is not our bodies but our minds.

This same division of body and mind underlies Postgenderism: we can replace biological reproduction with artificial wombs and other technological fixes, fulfilling the goal of the Sexual Revolution of liberating sex from the constraints of biology and giving it its proper function of providing physical and psychological pleasure. Our gender can thus be whatever we want it to be, and we can use our technology to conform our bodies to our minds. This form of Transhumanism thus merges with the ideology of the Sexual Revolution, LGBTQ ideas, and especially Transgenderism.

Given the materialist assumptions underlying Transhumanism, this Technognostic direction seems odd, but it flows naturally from Transhumanisms initial premises. But those premises are dubious at best. While there is a connection between the brain and the mind, scientists and philosophers have been debating what it is for years. It is far from clear that the brain produces the mind, that the brain (and mind) are based on calculations of the sort that computers can do, that consciousness arises from calculations, etc. Further, creativity, empathy, compassion, individual tastes in music and art, emotions, curiosity, loveall the things that make us human and give meaning to lifecannot be reduced to computer algorithms. Yet these versions of Transhumanism assume they can.

Enhancing the Body

But what about more biologically oriented versions of Transhumanism that want to harness science and technology to take charge of our own evolution as a species, whether through life extension or technological augmentation (also known as biohacking)?

While these approaches to Transhumanism would seem to be the antithesis of Technognosticism, they do share some of the same worldview assumptions. Specifically, they tend to be materialists and to believe that science is the key to discovering truth; unlike some Singularitarians who see potential dangers in moving toward the Singularity (which should be obvious to anyone who has watched science fiction films), most biohackers assume that if we can develop an interesting technology or modification of the human body, we should try it on ourselves or on willing test subjects.

A concrete example of this is embedded RFIDchips. RFID tags have been used in a wide range of applications, including keeping track of parts or cargo, opening locks, and creating machine readable passports. RFID chips were embedded in cattle as a way of keeping track of herds and have since become common in pets. The first RFID chip was embedded in a human in 1998. They have since been used to identify VIP patrons in clubs, to pay bills, to open security doors, to monitor workflow and inventory management for patients in hospitals, and to keep medical records. The body thus functions as its own ID, as a debit card, as a key, and as a medical record systemand thus as an interface to the internet.Lest you think that this is all nothing but science fiction dreams, Elon Musk, who makes a habit of making sci-fi reality, hopes to begin human testing by the end of next year.

Similarly, scientists and engineers are working to develop artificial organs as well prosthetics that have greater abilities than natural limbs and could replace them, all of which will be connected to the internet and will have software upgrades wirelessly transmitted to them.

The Nature of Our Bodies

And here we see another assumption common to all these forms of Transhumanism: the body as an upgradeable machine. Just as uploading the mind is intimately connected to artificial intelligence and to connecting the brain to the internet (or whatever replaces it), so biohacking is designed to increase the capabilities of our bodies, giving them a technological upgrade that will enhance life. And just as the brain controls the body, so our new technologies will connect to computers, AI, and the internet to improve their functions and efficiency.

Biblically, we are embodied souls, and if we are to have a balanced worldview, we cannot neglect either. Western medicine has long viewed the body as a biochemical machine and from that perspective has developed some very effective means for repairing it. This is essentially a materialistic perspective: we are bodies and if there is a soul, it is a product of the brain. But this viewpoint does not take into account the role of the mind in health, including such things as the placebo effect or psychosomatic illnesses; it also does not explain alternative therapies such as acupuncture. In contrast, Eastern worldviews along with traditional Gnosticism say we are souls and our bodies are at best secondary to who we are.

Transhumanism either follows Transgenderism into the trap of emphasizing the mind at the expense of the body (Neo-Gnosticism or Technognosticism), or the body at the expense of the mind. While the two sides meet on the internet, in both cases you end up with a truncated vision of humanity.

Life Extension

Life extension technologies may seem harmless. After all, isnt that the goal of medicine? And much of the research is in fact benign. But when it begins moving into gene editing and splicing, manipulating mitochondrial DNA, and the like, we are entering ethically questionable territory as discussed in an earlier article.

But the questions raised by life extension technologies go well beyond these ethical issues into areas of sociology and anthropology. Suppose we succeed and vastly extend human lifespans into the hundreds or thousands of years. Suppose we actually figure out a way to make people immortal. Who would have access to the technologya question we could also ask about any other physical or intellectual augmentation? Do we create a master race that then dominates those who do not have the opportunity to benefit from the technology? Every new technology, if it survives, is adopted first by those with the money to afford it before economies of scale allow it to reach the masses; if we did develop these technologies, would they actually be shared and if so, who would pay?

And if we live forever (or close to it), what do we do about reproduction? Does it become illegal to have babies because of the problem of overpopulation? How does this change our relationships with other people? How does it change society and education? Does the evolutionary imperative to reproduce just vanish or do we need to sublimate it or provide a substitute? We already are producing robotic pets and baby dolls as companions for the elderly, not to mention sex bots, and these will only improve with AI. Does that become the future of families in a world where everyone lives for centuries or more?

The problems raised by Immortalism and other forms of technological enhancement are legion, and they all come from a defective metaphysics, the resulting defective view of humanity, and a scientism that for the most part argues that if we can do something we should. The arrogance of those who believe we can take control of our own evolution, as if we knew enough to understand all the implications of our actions, is nothing short of breathtaking.

The specter of overpopulation in the world of Immortalism is a good transition to Technogaianism, an environmental movement that looks to use technology and genetic engineering to reduce humanitys impact on the world. It fits broadly into an environmentally based worldview that we will discuss in the next article.

Gov. Beshear shows real leadership

Hooray for our Governor! Like everywhere else, the virus is spreading more in Kentucky. I think Mr. Beshear is a hero. He is brave enough and caring enough to mandate face masks for the good of all of us regardless of all the complaints and criticism he is going to get from the people who dont care enough for other people especially caring for our frontline medical workers.

There is no doubt that face masks slow down the spread of the virus. My daughter is a nurse at the hospital. For every additional virus case admitted to the hospital my daughter is in more danger. From a concerned father, thank you Gov. Beshear.

This years fireworks were a blast

The fireworks display this year was exceptional, and the locations were well-placed. My family enjoyed the show and not fighting the crowd at the river.

Hopefully they will do this in the future.

A Henson statue wouldnt accurately depict slaves struggles

In a recent Readers Write, James Goodall presented an option for the dilemma of the statue on the courthouse lawn honoring Confederate heroes erect a statue honoring Josiah Henson to represent the other side. Henson is worthy of honor; he was heroic by any definition. But a statue of Henson would not represent the other side of our shared history that continues to this day to tear us apart.

Henson was heroic, but he doesnt represent the reality of most slaves he got away. Perhaps if we truly want to depict the other side, we should erect a statue depicting a mother being torn away from her child, or a man, back stripped bare, bearing the stripes of a brutal beating.

It is often argued that Southern states made war against Americans over the issue of states rights. What is omitted is that the actual question was whether the federal government could ban slavery, or if individual states had the right to make that decision.

This argument implies that the decision to own human beings was a legitimate choice for states to make. It was and is not. It is morally indefensible.

If the purpose of the statue is to teach history, it fails miserably by not telling the whole story. If it is there to honor some Daviess Countians, it does so at the cost of erasing the history of other Daviess Countians. At the seat of our government, this is a price too high to pay.

More empathy is needed when it comes to courthouse statue

I would urge the county government to have more empathy for the Black population of our county. A statue that causes pain for a segment of our community should not be on public property.

I am sure when the statue was placed there, Black people were not consulted. But this is 2020. I think the time has come to remove it, and I do not understand why the decision is difficult for some of our county commissioners.

Let the people invested in the statue put it somewhere that they can appreciate it. Just not on public property.

Move us forward by removing Confederate statue

This long journey of working toward social equality within our community is a daunting, worthwhile effort.

This has been the longevity of my adult life, and in 2020 the necessity of continuing the fight is as relevant today as it was in the 1960s. I was on the right side of history then, and as we are creating our history fighting injustices today, I will be on the right side of history again taking a stand for righteousness and justice for all.

Although much progress has been gained, there are still reminders of institutionalized racism and racial bias woven into the fabric of our country. Many times, as a community, our solution is to ignore or place a Band Aid upon the racial unrest.

One such reminder is the Confederate statue on the courthouse lawn. It stands as a symbol of a dark past in our community and our country. It serves as a constant reminder that the Civil War is still being fought through the ideals of the Confederacy written upon the hearts and minds of our community. There is a constant push and pull of history versus heritage, unity versus racism and love versus hate.

It is time for us to stop the push and pull. It is time for us to stand against racism and all its symbols of racism within our community. Move us forward by removing the Confederate statue from the courthouse lawn.

Statue sits on lawn of courthouse that Confederates once burned down

The statue of a Confederate soldier on the southwest corner of the Daviess County Courthouse lawn is privately owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The property the statue sits on is public property, in a sense, owned by the taxpaying citizens of Daviess County.

The decision as to what, if any, private object can sit on this public property is up to the owners of the land, the taxpaying citizens of Daviess County. Also, this is a year in which the Confederate flag has been banned nationwide. From sporting events to state capitols, the flag has been taken down. But did you know that on the granite stone base on which the statue of the confederate soldier sits, there is a depiction of the National Flag of the Confederacy etched in stone?

Since Daviess County came into existence in 1815, there have been five courthouses. We are currently using courthouse No. 5. On Jan. 4, 1865, Confederate raiders passing though Owensboro burned down Daviess County courthouse No. 3. It is ironic that only 35 years after that event, a statue of a Confederate soldier was erected just a few feet away from where Confederate raiders burned down that courthouse.

Health risks of smoking; When is the best time to stop? The Sun Nigeria – Daily Sun

Although smoking has been associated with many different health risks the practice remains common and has even been reported to be on the rise. An interesting observation is that it is not only the uneducated who smoke but smoking is also found among the educated and has been seen to cut across diverse socioeconomic status, age groups, sex, religion, ethnicity and cultural belief among other differences. A healthy lifestyle helps to promote health, prevent diseases and prolong life and as such should be the target of individuals. Cessation of smoking/avoidance of smoking is one of the healthy behaviours people are advised to adopt as studies show that doing so reduces the risks of mortality from certain diseases. Health education and awareness on the dangers of smoking and the need to quit by smokers aims to achieve a reduction in illness and mortality rates from smoking-related conditions, improvement in the quality of life of the population and overall national development. A variety of responses may be obtained as the reasons why people smoke, however, the damaging effects of smoking on health can be experienced by all no matter the reason just as the popular saying by Stephen R. Covey, While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions. Among the many harms linked to smoking, exposure of persons (second hand smokers) who are around the active smoker to serious health risks can be quite disturbing.

There is no better time to quit smoking than now and doing so can be the best decision yet. Smoking has been associated with many medical conditions like

Lung diseases: Smoking increases a persons risk of lung cancer, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive lung diseases (COPD), asthma as studies show that exposure to secondhand smoke can trigger asthma in children and adults, and also restrict lung growth in children. For individuals who aim to maintain healthy lungs, smoking should be avoided in all forms including passive smoking. Toxins from smoke absorbed in the lungs exposes a person to increased risk of respiratory infections and other conditions. The role of smoking in disease causation also depends on genetic and other predisposing factors.

Heart diseases: Smoking is dangerous to the heart as it contains chemicals which can damage the heart and is one of the major causes of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) like coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke among others. The amount of cigarette smoked in a day and the duration of smoking can be an indicator of the level of risk to which a smoker is exposed, however, a smoker is at risk irrespective of number of sticks smoked in a day. A very important aspect is that secondhand smokers (also known as passive smoking/environmental smoke are those who inhale smoke from the burning of tobacco or that which is exhaled by the active smoker) are also at risk of cardiovascular disease. Smoking causes the build-up of plaque (waxy substance that is made up of cholesterol and other components) which could limit the free flow of blood in the affected arteries.

Cancers: Smoking can cause cancer of any part of the body like mouth, throat, lungs, blood, cervix, bladder, kidneys, liver, prostate, stomach and pancreas among many others. The best way to prevent cancers associated with smoking is to avoid or stop smoking either in active or passive forms. Research shows that quitting smoking reduces an individual long term risk of cancers significantly. Although there is a general baseline risk of cancer with smoking, the relationship between smoking and cancer may be dose-dependent, in terms of the duration and quantity smoked. Smoking introduces harmful agents that can cause cancer (carcinogens) into the body and increases the chances of gene mutation which could lead to cancer.

In addition to the above mention effects of smoking on health, smoking can also affect reproductive health, depresses the immune system, increases risk of eye conditions, arthritis, skin diseases and premature ageing of the skin (smokers may look older than they are due) as well as poor skin tone, causes bad breath and stains the teeth, leads to addiction and can also encourage other unhealthy behaviours like excessive alcohol consumption, substance abuse.

An individual has the power to prevent consequences of smoking by making a decision to quit. It is crucial to note that there is no safe way to smoke and no health benefits that could be derived from smoking. In describing the health effects of smoking and tobacco use, the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (U.S Department of Health and Human Services), reported that for every person who dies because of smoking, at least thirty people live with a serious smoking-related illness

Smoking is an aspect of lifestyle that one can get addicted to due to complex brain activities by nicotine contained in tobacco which causes temporary pleasure and can make it difficult for smokers to quit. Some people experience unpleasant effects as signs and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal which discouraged them from quitting the habit of smoking, however, there are several treatment modalities for nicotine dependence. The appropriate option and further advice can be provided by the doctor. If you are not sure about when to stop or you are yet to decide on smoking status, you are encouraged that the best time is now.

Getting a consultation with a doctor to discuss decision to quit smoking can provide with useful information as to the most effective method. Over-the-counter or prescription-only products may be used for nicotine replacement therapy. Individual preferences abound and products should be used as specified and prescribed. Some examples of products include nicotine gums, patch, lozenges, inhalers among others. A strong will to quit is required so as not to relapse into the habit after quitting and having good support from family, friends, counselling, smoking support groups can be of huge benefits as they can provide motivation needed by the smoker to give up smoking. Effective management of stress as well as avoiding other triggers or situations that encourage smoking like excessive alcohol consumption, maintaining adequate diet and regular exercise as well getting regular medical check as recommended by your primary care provider can beneficial.

Some gains of not smoking, in terms of some effects of smoking on certain systems or organs in the body, can be experienced almost immediately after cessation of smoking regardless of how long a person has smoked. For instance, a former smokers heart rate may return to normal, long term risks of cancers can be lowered significantly in the individual and exposure of secondhand smokers to smoke will be greatly reduced among many others.

If you smoke, quit. If you dont smoke, good choice, dont start

Beat Stress | Spiritual and Physical Wellness – ChicagoNow

By Sheri McIntosh, today at 1:38 pm

Avoiding stress is usually on the list for living a healthy lifestyle. It is typically behind eating healthy and exercising. I feel like eating healthy and exercising is in my control. Stress comes looking for me. Most of us do not intentionally place ourselves in stressful situations. Life circumstances bring stress into our lives.

Stress is a physical and mental response to life experiences. Everyone has stressful events in their life at some point of time. We have life events involving work, family, or health that may cause stress.

When you experience stress, your body responds by releasing a hormone that increases your heart and breathing rate. This is okay when you experience short-term stress; however, if you are experiencing long-term stress it can be detrimental to your health. Long-term or chronic stress can cause several health issues including depression, anxiety, obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease. With short-term stress you can feel the change in your body. Some people under chronic stress have experienced it for such a long time they ignore the impact on their body. They have insomnia, anxiety or are short tempered and do not realize that stress is at the root of their problem.

There are things you can do to help you cope with stress. It is okay to admit that you feel stressed. Practice self-care and do not feel like you are being selfish. There is nothing wrong with taking some time out for yourself. Find time to relax. Try deep breathing exercises, prayer, and meditation. Take a bubble bath. Listen to your favorite music. Use a journal to write down your feelings. Do not make unrealistic goals that you will pressure yourself to reach. (This also includes not letting other people create unrealistic goals for you.) You want to use positive activities to cope with stress. If you feel overwhelmed and cannot get a handle on your stress seek professional help.

HempSpot coming to Willowick – News-Herald.com

Saturday, July 18th, will mark the Grand Opening of HempSpot in Willowick!

From 10 am to 2, located on 28801 Lakeshore Blvd, HempSpot will be opening their doors to offer residents an affordable alternative to having a healthy lifestyle.

There will also be a fitness class at 10:30 with Cleveland Holtist winner GI Jayne along with giveaways for everyone that purchases a product that day.

HempSpot will offer a variety of CBD and Hemp products such as protein bars, drinks, food, and more!

Founder Brian Lytle and Chief Operating Officer Chad Gourley want residents to have every opportunity to learn more about what they can do to help themselves.

Lytle and Gourley, both coming from professional wellness and marketing backgrounds, came together to bring this idea to life in Willowick. After researching CBD and Hemp's benefits, they both wanted to bring that to their communities' attention and offer a platform for education.

"My background is in the wellness industry before I got into the CBD industry. I had a personal training company. I treat people in different studios, or at their house, while I was training I stumbled across CBD," says Lytle.

After being informed by a colleague about all the benefits to CBD, Lytle was still hesitant in the beginning. "My perspective was that it was bad, it was drugs, so I didn't pay it much attention. Then I started doing more research and was an anti-inflammatory, and some of the clients I was working with had inflammation of the gut, called a leaky gut syndrome."

"So I started giving it (CBD) to them, and after about a month, their discomfort started going away. So I thought it might be something to this, and I started to do even more research on CBD, and have become almost evangelical about it."

"Part of my mission is to educate people, the retail store came about because I wanted a platform to talk to people and help them understand what CBD and Hemp are and how it can help," he continued.

So what exactly is CBD? What is Hemp?

Kathleen Felton, a writer for Health.com, wrote that CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is a chemical compound from the Cannabid Sativa plant, which is also known as marijuana or help, according to the US National Library of Medicine.

It's a naturally occurring substance that's used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike its cousin, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the primary active ingredient in marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive.

Hemp, according to Aaron Cadena of Medium.com, is a term used to classify varieties of Cannabis that contain 0.3% or less THC content (by dry weight).

It has generally been used to describe non-intoxicating Cannabis that is harvested for the industrial use of its derived products.

For this and many other reasons, Lytle and Gourley have chosen to build a business model around Hemp and CBD as an alternative for health and wellness. As to why they decided Willowick-- the answer was simple, its where they are from.

"I live in Willowick, Chad used to live in Willowick, I have a family here and personally want to contribute to a city that has a lot of potential," Lytle says.

"We want to be that spark. We want to give back and be apart of a community that could thrive, but just isn't' thriving yet," he continued.

Gourley, also the creator of LiveWell Willoughby, has always wanted to inspire and engage with his community. He added, "We've come together about what we want HempSpot to be, a voice and platform to educate. At our grand opening, you're going to see things people can take with them to help educate them on what CBD is and how they can take it, they can also see what Hemp is. They are the same, but separate. On our shelves, you'll see there is Hemp protein, that doesn't have CBD in it, but Hemp protein is a complete protein, which is very hard to do in a plant-based side of things. There's a lot of education that we have to do."

"One of our goals is to get Hemp on the food pyramid," he continued.

But after shortly securing their space, COVID spread nationwide, and many businesses had to close.

"It's been rough; for me, all around it had a huge negative impact on my business, in one part," says Lytle.

Gourley added, "It definitely at first was like wow, how are we going to overcome this?"

"Especially because we had just actually secured this location, like two weeks before COVID hit, and suddenly everything is getting shut down," he continued.

"Luckily, things have opened up a bit so we can do our grand opening."

Lytle and Gourley are taking every precaution in the effort of social distancing for their opening on July 18th.

"We'll have masks there, hand sanitizer, so people feel comfortable. We'll make sure we'll let people know we're not enforcing it on anyone, but if they chose, we'll have markers for it so they can feel comfortable. We are taking all precautions," Lytle says.

Gourley says residents should come out because HempSpot isn't your typical CBD shop. "There's a lot of CBD shops in the area, and this isn't just a CBD shop. It's helpful for people to understand there is coffee, ice cream, healthy snack protein bars, even Hemp pastas coming in."

"Our whole focus is on wellness and helping people have sustainable health in their lives and build better lifestyles."

HempSpot is also hiring for consultants, for more information follow their page on Facebook.

Tia Mowry’s Life with Endometriosis That Caused Her Fertility Struggles – AmoMama

Tia Mowrys Endometriosis condition caused her to have surgery, change her diet completely, and have difficulty conceiving. Heres a look at her journey.

Most women hope to have a family with children when they grow older, including Tia Mowry, which is why she agreed to surgery after knowing the possibility of having Endometriosis.

The Sister, Sister star has been transparent about her diagnosis and infertility problems throughout the years. Heres a look at her story.

SHOWING SIGNS

In a tell-all video, Mowry narrated how she came to know of her sickness. She recalled her college days and the severe menstrual cramps she would get that would cause her to miss class.

Although her doctor initially told her to do a few remedies to help brush it odd, she knew something was wrong.

After a friend suggested she see a specialist, Mowry learned the possibility of having Endometriosis. However, the doctor said that the only way to be diagnosed was through surgery.

What pushed the actress to have the procedure was that the condition, if she did have it, may cause infertility struggles, which she did not want.

LIVING WITH ENDOMETRIOSIS

The surgery found scar tissues along the uterus lining, causing pain and signifying that Mowry had the illness.

Doctors removed the scar tissues to ease the pain, which it did for two years. However, the Endometriosis came back, and Mowry had to get another surgery.

In order to stop the scar tissues from returning and needing surgery, she had to change her diet and eliminate inflammatory-causing food, such as sugar, dairy, and highly processed food.

Because of her drive and will to have a child, Mowry strictly followed all orders given to her by the doctor. She shared:

I was reassured that with the right eating habits and lifestyle changes (no sugar, no carbs), I would have a better possibility of getting pregnant.

A beautiful thing that came out of her strict diet was a cookbook, which she released in 2017, called Whole New You.

Her new eating habits allowed Mowry to discover more recipes in the kitchen and share them with those who wanted to live a healthy lifestyle as well.

HAVING TWO CHILDREN

The changes she made allowed her body to become better, with symptoms disappearing and other conditions, like eczema and migraines, leaving as well.

The best part of it all was that Mowry was able to conceive a child. When I got pregnant with my son, I was overjoyed, she said.

Initially, the Family Reunion star was in denial that she had to take about two dozen pregnancy tests to prove her disbelief, but eventually, she was just overwhelmed and happy.

A few years later, Mowry needed another surgery to become pregnant with her second child. Although the conceiving process was complicated for both, she was happy she received support from her husband.

I didnt think Id be able to have a second child, and its been over seven years since my first pregnancy, she shared. I didnt let my infertility issues define me or define what my goals were and what I wanted in life.

Today, Mowry is a proud mom to two beautiful children, a son named Cree and a daughter named Cairo, who often appears in her social media.

CELEBRATING FATHERS DAY

Recently, the actress family celebrated Fathers Day at home and made the Sunday special for Cory Hardrict.

Photos showed that the family-of-four had a fun-filled afternoon taking a swim in the pool, with a sweet snap of Hardrict carrying his daughter.

Mowry also included a picture of their breakfast spread, which included scrambled eggs, pancakes, blueberries, bananas, grapes, and chocolate chips.

There are important images for the world to see, she captioned the post. You are an amazing #father and we are blessed to have you help raise the next generation.

Does Low Testosterone Cause Night Sweats?

Night sweats is a term for sweating during the night to the point that it soaks your pajamas or sheets. Hot flashes and night sweats are often linked to hormonal imbalances among women, especially during menopause. But men can experience hot flashes and night sweats too.

Night sweats in men are sometimes linked to low levels of testosterone, or low T. Testosterone is the main sex hormone in men. It stimulates your sperm production, supports your sex drive, and helps build your bone and muscle mass.

To help relieve night sweats and other symptoms of low T, your doctor may recommend hormone replacement therapy.

Night sweats can also be caused by other conditions. If youre experiencing them, make an appointment with your doctor. They can help diagnose the cause of your symptoms and recommend a treatment plan.

Low T is a relatively common hormonal condition in men. It happens when you produce levels of levels of testosterone that are lower than normal. Its also known as male hypogonadism.

As men age, its normal for their testosterone levels to drop. According to the Mayo Clinic, testosterone levels typically decline by about 1 percent per year starting around age 30 or 40.

This natural occurrence isnt generally considered low T. But if your testosterone levels decline at a faster rate, you may be diagnosed with low T.

The symptoms of low T can vary from one case to another. They may include:

Low T can be caused by a variety of things, including:

Low T is only one of several potential causes of night sweats. In some cases, they are caused by other medical conditions. Night sweats can also result from:

If you experience night sweats, make an appointment with your doctor. They can help diagnose the cause of your symptoms and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

If your doctor suspects you have low T, they will likely order blood tests to check your testosterone levels. According to treatment and management guidelines, a value under 300 nanograms of testosterone per deciliter (ng/dL) of blood is generally considered too low.

If your testosterone levels are low, your doctor may order additional tests or evaluations to determine the cause of your hormonal imbalance. If your testosterone levels are normal, they may check you for other potential causes of night sweats.

To treat night sweats and other symptoms of low T, your doctor may recommend testosterone replacement therapy. It can be administered using a variety of products, such as:

Testosterone replacement therapy can help alleviate symptoms of low T, including night sweats. But it isnt entirely without risk. Side effects can include:

If you have prostate cancer, testosterone therapy is not advised. It can make the tumor grow.

Talk to your doctor about the potential benefits and risks of testosterone replacement therapy. They can help you decide if its the best option for you. If youre at an increased risk of prostate cancer, they may advise against testosterone replacement therapy.

According to the Hormone Health Network, you may be more likely to develop prostate cancer if youre:

If you have any of these risk factors, and you decide to undergo testosterone replacement therapy, your doctor should monitor you for signs of prostate cancer while youre receiving treatment.

Testosterone therapy has been shown to stimulate growth of prostate cancer in people who already have the cancer.

Depending on the underlying cause of your low testosterone levels, your doctor may recommend other treatments.

Currently, no over-the-counter supplements have been proven to treat night sweats or low T.

If youre experiencing night sweats caused by low T, treating your low testosterone levels may help relieve them. If you continue to experience night sweats on a regular basis, despite following your doctors recommended treatment plan, make a follow-up appointment.

They may prescribe other forms of treatment or check for other underlying medical conditions.

Healthy Living: Nutrition can have impact on your mental health – Longford Leader

For the last few weeks I've been writing about the link between your physical health and what you eat, but did you know that nutrition also has a big impact on your mood and mental health.

Although managing stress, anxiety and depression can be difficult, and there is no one size fits all solution, some people may benefit from seeing their doctor and following their recommendations while for others a more holistic approach may work better.

Regardless what route you decide to take, the right diet combined with appropriate lifestyle changes can have a profound impact on your mood.

A very large body of evidence now exists that suggests diet is as important to mental health as it is to physical health and a healthy diet has been shown to be protective whilst an unhealthy diet has been shown to be a risk factor for depression and anxiety.

If you have been reading my weekly column over the last couple of months you will have seen me regularly write about blood sugar balance, and how it can benefit your energy and weight loss.

An imbalance of blood sugar has also been linked to stress, anxiety and depression.

Did you know that up to 50% of low mood is down to blood sugar imbalances?

Learning how to manage your blood sugar is the key to having more energy, a better mood and controlling your weight . Feeling more confident about the way you look is in itself an excellent way to boost feelings of self-worth

So how do we balance our blood sugars?

Eat regularly, three main meals a day and two snacks if you need them (if going more than four hours between meals)

Eat protein with every meal or snack.

Choose low GL (glycaemic load) carbohydrates that keep your blood sugar level even and minimises mood-altering blood sugar dips.

So what foods help your mood?

Certain foods may play a role in the cause of mood disorders, or they may make symptoms worse.

A nutritious brain diet follows the same logic as a heart healthy regimen or weight control plan. You want to limit sugary and high-fat processed foods, and opt for nutritious foods that will provide you with, sufficient protein, giving you an optimum supply of essential amino acids.

Make sure to have some form of protein with every meal and snack.

High mood-boosting Vitamin B foods like nuts, seeds, beans and green leafy vegetables, which also include essential zinc and magnesium, are good for mental stability, as zinc helps control the bodys response to stress and low levels have been linked to depression.

It has been shown that people with low B12 levels have more brain inflammation and higher rates of depression and dementia.

Falling short on B vitamins has long been linked to low moods with studies suggesting there is a definite link between vitamin B and stress levels.

When we eat real food that nourishes us, it becomes the protein-building blocks, enzymes, brain tissue, and neurotransmitters that transfer information and signals between various parts of the brain and body.

Certain nutrients are linked to changes in a brain protein that helps increase connections between brain cells. A diet rich in nutrients like omega-3s and zinc boosts levels of this substance.

On the other hand, a diet high in trans fats and refined sugars has a very potent negative impact on brain proteins.

Few of us get enough omega-3 fats in our diet, and these are key to our mood and brain function. The dry weight of our brain is literally 60% fat - so not surprising that we depend on a daily intake of essential fats.

EPA, DPA and DHA all help build and rebuild your brain, and are part of the equation for happiness. The higher your blood levels of omega-3 fats, the higher your levels of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin are likely to be.

Omega-3 fats help build receptor sites as well as improving their function.

Sources of omega-3 fats: oily fish (salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines, cod, tuna, halibut), walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds. Most plant sources of omega-3 do not contain the long-chain fatty acids mentioned above. Although the body can make those from short-chain omega-3s like the ones found in nuts and seeds conversion is poor and it is difficult to get enough omega-3 that way, therefore If you are vegetarian or vegan, consider taking an omega-3 supplement for example DHA from seaweed.

Last but certainly not least is the all-important gut health!

The human gut is lined with more than 100 million nerve cells, Yes, we have brain cells in our large intestines!

This explains why antibiotics which disturb the gut microbiome may interact with psychotropic medications, and influence our mood . This also explains why mood disorders are so prevalent in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Chemicals implicated in depression such as serotonin are also found in the gut; 90% of serotonin is manufactured in the digestive tract and not the brain. Many antidepressants work by increasing serotonin. It has been shown that gut bacteria produce many other neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, and GABA, which are critical for mood, anxiety and motivation. The gut microbiome can cause changes in how our brains react.

Also, stress makes us more likely to develop mood disorders. And stress makes the gut more permeable to bacteria and this may lead to dysbiosisan imbalance of good to bad gut bacteria. In sum, depression is maybe caused by dysfunctional gut-brain-immune system interactions.

Good gut bacteria or the absence of some bad ones can make us more resilient to depressive states after stressors or trauma. It is not surprising that chronic exposure to stress is associated with a higher incidence of depression, anxiety and PTSD. But not everyone who faces stress develops a depression or anxiety , and not everyone who experiences a trauma develops PTSD, and may be due to the individuals gut health!

To help balance your gut bacteria introduce some fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt with live active cultures, which provide good gut bacteria.

If you struggle to make changes to your diet or need help choosing the right supplement or probiotic for you, why not book an appointment with me, there is no time like the present, my clinic is back open and I am taking bookings for new and existing clients, so just pop me a message if you would like to schedule an appointment. contact details below.

Why go vegan? | The Vegan Society

For the animals

Preventing the exploitation of animals is not the only reason for becoming vegan, but for many it remains the key factor in their decision to go vegan and stay vegan. Having emotional attachments with animals may form part of that reason, while many believe that all sentient creatures have a right to life and freedom. Specifics aside, avoiding animal products is one of the most obvious ways you can take a stand against animal cruelty and animal exploitation everywhere. A more detailed overview on why being vegan demonstrates true compassion for animals can be found here.

Well-planned vegan diets follow healthy eating guidelines, and contain all the nutrients that our bodies need. Both the British Dietetic Association and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognise that they are suitable for every age and stage of life. Some research has linked vegan diets with lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

Going vegan is a great opportunity to learn more about nutrition and cooking, and improve your diet. Getting your nutrients from plant foods allows more room in your diet for health-promoting options like whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds and vegetables, which are packed full of beneficial fibre, vitamins and minerals.

From recycling our household rubbish to cycling to work, we're all aware of ways to live a greener life. One of the most effective things an individual can do to lower their carbon footprint is to avoid all animal products. This goes way beyond the problem of cow flatulence!

The production of meat and other animal products places a heavy burden on the environment - from crops and water required to feed the animals, to the transport and other processes involved from farm to fork. The vast amount of grain feed required for meat production is a significant contributor to deforestation, habitat loss and species extinction. In Brazil alone, the equivalent of 5.6 million acres of land is used to grow soya beans for animals in Europe. This land contributes to developing world malnutrition by driving impoverished populations to grow cash crops for animal feed, rather than food for themselves. On the other hand, considerably lower quantities of crops and water are required to sustain a vegan diet, making the switch to veganism one of the easiest, most enjoyable and most effective ways to reduce our impact on the environment. For more on how veganism is the way forward for the environment, see our environmentsection.

Just like veganism is the sustainable option when it comes to looking after our planet, plant-based living is also a more sustainable way of feeding the human family. A plant-based diet requires only one third of the land needed to support a meat and dairy diet. With rising global food and water insecurity due to a myriad of environmental and socio-economic problems, there's never been a better time to adopt a more sustainable way of living. Avoiding animal products is not just one of the simplest ways an individual can reduce the strain on food as well as other resources, it's the simplest way to take a stand against inefficient food systems which disproportionately affectthe poorest people all over the world. Read more here on how vegan diets can help people.

The suffering caused by the dairy and egg industry is possibly less well publicised than the plight of factory farmed animals. The production of dairy products necessitates the death of countless male calves that are of no use to the dairy farmer, as well as the premature death of cows slaughtered when their milk production decreases. Similarly, in the egg industry, even 'ethical' or 'free range' eggs involve the killing of the 'unnecessary' male chicks when just a day old.

It's tempting to want to believe that the meat we eat is ethical, that our 'food animals' have lived full, happy lives and that they have experienced no pain or fear at the slaughterhouse. Yet the sad truth is that all living creatures (even those labelled 'free range' or 'organic') fear death, just as we do. No matter how they are treated when alive, they all experience the same fear when it comes to slaughter.

The good news is there IS something we can do about it. Every time we shop or order food in a restaurant - every time we eat - we can choose to help these animals. Every time we make the switch from an animal product to a vegan one we are standing up for farmed animals everywhere. Going vegan is easier than ever before with veganism becoming increasingly mainstream as more and more people from all walks of life discover the benefits of living this way.

It'stime to ask ourselves: if it is now possible to live a life that involves delicious food and drink, delivers better health, leaves a smaller carbon footprint and avoids killing other creatures - then why don't we?

PETA says Thor should go vegan in ‘Love and Thunder’, gets grilled on Twitter – News Lagoon

The MCU has always shown Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as a god whos also got one of the hottest bods. Sorry Cap, people still cant get over those guns Hemsworth has, even if yours stopped a chopper.

However, the fat Thor we saw in Avengers: Endgame saw an outrageous and hilarious gasp envelop theatres. And while we dont know if we see that avatar again in Thor: Love and Thunder, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) came up with a suggestion to help shed the kilos: Make Thor vegan.

In the letter, Lewis Crary, the PETA representative said: According to his personal trainer, Hemsworth went vegan while filming the original Thor and Avengers films, developing a particular taste for beans and veggie burgers. He added: If Thor is serious about protecting the Earth, going vegan makes a lot of senseaxing animal products from his diet could save more than 1,000 gallons of water, 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and 30 square feet of forest each day as well as the lives of nearly 200 animals a year!

As far as fan reactions go, PETA seems to have just picked the wrong time as Twitterati shared their thoughts, none pleasant, and some indescribable. We picked out a few. Yo, were in the middle of a pandemic, and yet here comes PETA with their stupidity, saying Thor should go vegan? I dont think veganism is really on par with Asgardians, a fan wrote. PETA can eat my ass, tweeted another.

For some, it was cheap publicity. The publicity stunts of #PETA never cease to baffle me. I will admit though, co-opting the popularity of #Marvels #BroThor is one of the more agreeable tactics Ive seen them use., a fan slammed the organization.

Warning: This may have you in thigh-slapping splits@peta want thor to go vegan, piss off, you hypocritical dogooding hippies, a fan said. dont want to think about PETA at the movies. Meat is MARVELous tweeted another. This fan seems to have a concrete explanation as to why this movie is nada. PETA needs to stop pushing their Vegan is better beliefs, because many Vegans end up on Vitamin supplements and eventually go back to a mixed diet so Thor going Vegan would be a poor move on Marvels part and go against his Viking origins.

And to end with, heres a classic: Get a life.

Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release on November 5, 2021.

Bats may have started the coronavirus pandemic. Could they be the key to ending it? – Study Finds

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Bats are thought to be hosts for a number of deadly human viruses, including Ebola, rabies, and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19). Despite carrying these viruses, however, bats themselves are relatively immune to the ill effects of viruses. In a new review paper published in the journal Cell Metabolism, University of Rochester scientists explain the mechanisms underlying bat virus tolerance and how bat immune systems may provide clues to treating viruses like SARS-CoV-2.

Although the origins of SARS-CoV-2 are not known for certain, the authors of the paper believe that the virus originated in bats and was subsequently transmitted to humans. Interestingly, although bats carry SARS-CoV-2, they seem to suffer no ill effects from it.

In addition to their virus tolerance, bats are remarkable for another reason: they live much longer than other animals of similar size. In general, body size tends to be closely related to lifespan. Smaller animals have shorter lives, while large ones live longer. Not so for bats. Many bat species can live for 30 to 40 years, which is unusual for their body size.

Weve been interested in longevity and disease resistance in bats for a while, but we didnt have the time to sit and think about it, says lead author Vera Gorbunova in a statement. Gorbunova is the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of Biology at Rochester. Being in quarantine gave us time to discuss this, and we realized there may be a very strong connection between bats resistance to infectious diseases and their longevity. We also realized that bats can provide clues to human therapies used to fight diseases.

Gorbunova and fellow scientist Andrei Seluanov have studied disease resistance and longevity in other animals, including naked mole rats, which have exceptionally long lifespans. A common factor across long-living species is inflammation, or rather, a lack thereof. These species tend to have dampened inflammatory responses, particularly when infected with viruses.

Inflammation is a key characteristic of aging and age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers disease, and cardiovascular disease. One inflammation trigger is viruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

With COVID-19, the inflammation goes haywire, and it may be the inflammatory response that is killing the patient, more so than the virus itself, says Gorbunova. The human immune system works like that: once we get infected, our body sounds an alarm and we develop a fever and inflammation. The goal is to kill the virus and fight infection, but it can also be a detrimental response as our bodies overreact to the threat.

Unlike humans, bats bodies are able to reduce viral replication without a strong immune response. This is beneficial because it controls the virus, but does not create a harmful inflammatory response. The researchers suggest that there may be several factors explaining how bats came to develop such unique immune systems throughout evolution.

First, bats are the only mammals with the ability to fly. This ability may have required them to develop tolerance to a variety of factors. They include temperature changes, metabolic changes, and molecular damage. In turn, these adaptations may help them to fight off diseases.

Bats also live in very crowded spaces. They often hang close to one another in caves or trees. This cozy style of living means that viruses and other diseases spread easily in bat colonies.

Bats are constantly exposed to viruses, Seluanov says. They are always flying out and bringing back something new to the cave or nest, and they transfer the virus because they live in such close proximity to each other.

The researchers explain that bats and viruses are in an evolutionary arms race. As bats immune systems evolve to fight a virus, the virus evolves to beat the bats immune systems. This cycle continues on and on.

Usually the strongest driver of new traits in evolution is an arms race with pathogens, Gorbunova says. Dealing with all of these viruses may be shaping bats immunity and longevity.

So, why dont humans just gather together in crowded spaces to give our immune systems a chance to develop tolerance to viruses?

As the researchers explain, bat immune systems have evolved over thousands of years, not a few months. While our social gathering traits are similar to bats, our immune systems have not yet evolved to fight off viruses in the same way bats can.

The consequences may be that our bodies experience more inflammation, Gorbunova says.

Humans have two possible strategies if we want to prevent inflammation, live longer, and avoid the deadly effects of diseases like COVID-19, Gorbunova says. One would be to not be exposed to any viruses, but thats not practical. The second would be to regulate our immune system more like a bat.
