Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter to quarantine at home after testing positive for Covid-19 – The National

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, 46, and her daughter, Aaradhya, 8, have confirmed they will self-quarantine at home after being diagnosed with the coronavirus.

The Bollywood actress and her daughter were revealed to have tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, July 12, a day after Aishwarya's husband, Abhishek Bachchan, confirmed he had the coronavirus.

Abhishek, 44, and his father, Bollywood screen legend Amitabh Bachchan, 77, both announced that they had tested positive on Saturday, July 11.

Abhishek confirmed that his wife and daughter would stay at home, rather than hospital, on Twitter.

"They will be self quarantining at home," he wrote. "The BMC [Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation] has been updated of their situation and are doing the needful."

As Aishwarya and her daughter are asymptomatic, they were able to stay at home after signing a declaration that they will isolate.

Abhishek also confirmed that his mother, Jaya Bachchan, had tested negative for Covid-19, but he and his father would remain in hospital for the time being.

"The rest of the family including my mother have tested negative. Thank you all for your wishes and prayers," he added.

"My father and I remain in hospital 'til the doctors decide otherwise. Everyone please remain cautious and safe. Please follow all rules!"

Amitabh is in hospital in an isolation unit, but his symptoms are currently being reported as mild and he is in a stable condition.

"They both voluntarily undertook antigen tests and since the results were positive they both have been admitted to Nanavati Hospital," the Maharashtra state health minister, Rajesh Tope, said in a video statement about Amitabh and Abhishek on Sunday, adding that they both had a mild cough and fever.

Suresh Kakani, commissioner from the BMC said that 16 people from the household have been tested, including those who work there.

On Sunday, BMC workers were seen at the Bachchan family home: they were there to sanitise the premises.

Mumbai is among the Indian cities worst hit by the coronavirus. On Monday, the country's virus caseload reached almost 880,000, with 23,187 deaths recorded.

Known as "Big B", Amitabh rose to fame in the early 1970s on the back of roles in hit movies such as Zanjeer and Sholay.

Active in the film industry since 1969, he has worked on more than 200 movies. His films still open to packed cinemas across India, but his new movie comedy-drama Gulabo Sitabo was released on Amazon's streaming service due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Amitabh is an active Twitter user, where he has 43 million followers, and his career has branched into television presenting, business and politics, as well as countless commercial endorsements.

Amitabh, who has won multiple awards for his acting, also hosts Kaun Banega Crorepati, India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire one of the most-watched shows on Indian television for 20 years.

Although the actor lives a healthy lifestyle, he has a history of health issues. He suffered a near-fatal injury during the shooting of an action scene on a film set in 1982 and was critically ill for several months. Thousands gathered outside the hospital and offered prayers daily.

The accident led to the actor to contract the Hepatitis B virus after a blood transfusion from a donor who was carrying it unknowingly. Reports say his liver lost 75 per cent of its function last year due to cirrhosis caused by the virus.

The Bollywood film industry only recently opened for work after a months-long hiatus following the imposition of a nationwide lockdown in India in late March. But actors that are over 65 who are often most vulnerable to the virus such as Amitabh, have been told to stay off set amid the pandemic.

Millions of Indians revere Amitabh like royalty, hanging on his every word, seeking his blessings and congregating outside his Mumbai bungalow every year on October 11, his birthday.

Fellow Bollywood stars left well wishes on social media. Sonam Kapoor tweeted: "Get well soon Amit uncle. All my love and prayers." South Indian superstar Mohanlal tweeted, "Wishing you a quick recovery, prayers" in reply to Abhishek's tweet about his diagnosis.

Hip Replacement Implants Market: Rise in Incidence of Trauma/Accidental Injuries to the Drive Market – 3rd Watch News

The global hip replacement implants market was valued at approximately US$ 7.0 Bn in 2017. It is projected to register a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 3.5% from 2018 to 2026, according to a new report published by Transparency Market Research (TMR) titled Hip Replacement Implants Market Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast, 20182026. Expansion of the health care industry, government initiatives, increase in health care expenditure, rise in product approvals, and increase in the patient population are projected to augment the global market from 2018 to 2026.

As key players introduce their new hip replacement implants in developed regions such a North America and Western Europe, these regions are likely to account for a dominating share of the global hip replacement implants market. Rise in Demand for Hip Replacement Surgeries across the Globe to Propel Market

Global demand for hip replacement is increasing, primarily due to a rise in clinical education among patients, increase in demand among the geriatric population, and rise in the prevalence of obesity and arthritis. The U.S. has witnessed a significant rise in demand for new hip surgeries from 89,919 surgeries in 2004 to 122,154 in 2015. Advancements in minimally invasive surgeries and 3D printing have fueled the global hip replacement market.

Improvement in Government-initiated Hip Implant Reforms

Government bodies of several countries are undertaking collaborative initiatives to meet the demand for hip implants. For instance, in 2013, Medicare spent about US$ 7 Bn on hospitalizations alone for hip and knee replacements. Moreover, 255 of 400,000 such surgeries performed annually are likely to be covered by the new payment model of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in the near future.

Increase in the Incidence of Trauma/Accidental Injuries

The incidence of accidental injuries and hip fractures has increased significantly in the last decade. Over 340,000 hip implant procedures are performed in the U.S. and 600,000 are performed globally each year. This includes several patients aged between 40 and 50, who are focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Increase in the number of hip-related accidents and other hip bone disorders, such as joint pain, instability in the hip joint, bone loss, and infection, are anticipated to boost the global hip replacement market during the forecast period.

High Cost of Hip Implants and Surgery to Restrain Market

Globally, patients are facing several distinct challenges, including implants costs, health care reform implementation, and reimbursement rates. Low affordability due to high costs and low access to new custom hip implant procedures in countries in Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa are key factors hampering the hip replacement implants market in these regions. The cost of procedure ranges from US$ 44,816 to US$ 16,000 per person, depending on the region, material, and type.

Asia Pacific Market to Expand Significantly

In terms of revenue, the hip replacement implants market in Asia Pacific is projected to expand at a CAGR of over 4.0% during the forecast period. Expanding economies in Asia Pacific offer significant opportunities to hip replacement implants manufacturers. Emerging countries such as India, China, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa have a large number of underserved patients. The disposable income of people in India, China, Mexico, Brazil, and other countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa has increased due to economic growth. This has boosted their purchasing power. Companies manufacturing hip replacement implants should explore new emerging countries, especially in Asia, as their population is high, which translates to a large patient base.

Kourtney Kardashian Has Always Tried to Protect Daughter Penelope From Kris Jenner – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Kardashians are undoubtedly one of the worlds most famous families, if not the most famous. Every single member of the family is naturally gorgeous, but they seem to have become truly obsessed with their looks, constantly fixated on being thin, and getting frequent cosmetic procedures.

Fans have certainly noticed, and a compilation video posted on Reddit notes that the Kardashians have this major obsession with being skinny. Now that four of the five sisters have daughters of their own, one Kardashian in particular is taking steps to shield her little girl from the familys constant focus on unhealthy body image.

RELATED: How Scott Disick Makes Co-Parenting Work With Kourtney Kardashian

The eldest of the Kardashian kids, Kourtney, has three children with perpetually on-again-off-again ex Scott Disick: Mason, Penelope, and Reign. Kourtney has had little work done and is very vocal about healthy living and promoting positive body image.

In the previously-mentioned Reddit thread where the video montage was posted, one user commented asking if others remembered a specific Keeping Up with the Kardashians episode when matriarch Kris Jenner asked Kourtney if she looked fat. Kourtney responded with, Dont use that word in front of my daughter, please. Kris replied with a sarcastic, Okay and laughter, but Kourtney wasnt joking. Penelope was three at the time.

Shortly after that episode aired, Cosmopolitan asked Kourtney about the incident. The mom of three explained, There are so many conversations that we have without thinking the kids are listening. I just dont want to start getting anybody self-conscious. They say if a mother is confident about her body that the daughters are way more likely to not have eating disorders.

Bravo, Kourtney, for standing up for something youre passionate about. Speaking of mothers, this exchange wasnt the first time Kris behavior perpetuated self-consciousness within the Kardashian clan.

RELATED: Have the Kardashian-Jenners Become Too Unrelatable? Some Fans Think So

Kris Jenner is largely credited with driving her familys success early on. She has a close relationship with her kids and grandkids, but shes also done some pretty questionable things, often using her influence over her family to manipulate them or the situation.

On a 2011 episode of KUWTK spinoff Khloe & Lamar, Jenner chastised daughter Khlos weight gain during a phone call, criticizing the way she was presenting herself in the media and saying, I feel like you could not chat about how many cookies youre eating in between meals, according to US Weekly. Jenner later apologized publicly.

Jenners only son, Rob, gained a noticeable amount of weight in the 2010s and was bullied by his family so relentlessly about it that he eventually became all but estranged from them. And finally, we cant forget about Kris incredible influence over daughter Kim. Kim has been very public about the fact that her mother talked her into posing for her first nude Playboy shoot in 2007, and theres heavy speculation that it was Jenner who leaked Kims sex tape back then also.

Although Kourtney is rarely the target of her mothers pressure and shaming tactics, it seems shes fed up enough to want to distance herself from both Jenner and KUWTK. As Us Weekly reports, Kourtney is stepping back from the show to focus on her family.

She made the announcement ahead of the most recent season premiere (number 18, for those of you who are keeping up), in which she gets into a nasty physical fight with Kim. Kourtney wrote on Instagram, I finally had the courage to change what was no longer bringing me happiness and putting my time and energy into that which is. Choose happiness!

This has long been rumored, as Kourtney mused on previous seasons of KUWTK that she would be happy if the show ended. This desire to protect her children and her level of self-awareness is admirable, especially coming from a family where image is literally everything.

Here’s How Bats Survive Novel Coronavirus and Other Deadly Viruses – The Weather Channel

Representational image

Bats are carriers of deadly viruses that affect humans like Ebola, rabies, and possibly the SARS-CoV-2 strain of virus that causes coronavirus. However, these viruses have not killed bats but humans.

Bats are remarkably able to tolerate viruses, and, additionally, live much longer than similar-sized land mammals. What are the secrets to their longevity and virus resistance?

According to researchers at the University of Rochester in the US, bats' longevity and capacity to tolerate viruses may stem from their ability to control inflammation, which is a hallmark of disease and aging.

In a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, biology professors Vera Gorbunova and Andrei Seluanov described the mechanisms underlying bats' unique abilities and how these mechanisms may hold clues to developing new treatments for diseases in humans.

"There may be a very strong connection between bats' resistance to infectious diseases and their longevity. We also realised that bats can provide clues to human therapies used to fight diseases," said Gorbunova.

The scientists, along with colleague Brian Kennedy, director of the Centre for Healthy Aging at the National University of Singapore, got to talking about bats.

Unlike humans, bats have developed specific mechanisms that reduce viral replication and also dampen the immune response to a virus.

The result is a beneficial balance: their immune systems control viruses but at the same time, do not mount a strong inflammatory response.

Another factor may be their environment.

Many species of bats live in large, dense colonies, and hang close together on cave ceilings or in trees. Those conditions are ideal for transmitting viruses and other pathogens.

"Bats are constantly exposed to viruses. They are always flying out and bringing back something new to the cave or nest, and they transfer the virus because they live in such close proximity to each other," said Seluanov.

Because bats are constantly exposed to viruses, their immune systems are in a perpetual arms race with pathogens.

"Usually the strongest driver of new traits in evolution is an arms race with pathogens. Dealing with all of these viruses may be shaping bats' immunity and longevity".

However, the study does not suggest for humans to toss their masks and crowd together in restaurants and movie theatres.

Evolution takes place over thousands of years, rather than a few months.

While humans may be developing social habits that parallel those of bats, we have not yet evolved bats' sophisticated mechanisms to combat viruses as they emerge and swiftly spread.

"The consequences may be that our bodies experience more inflammation," said Gorbunova.

Studying bats' immune systems will provide new targets for human therapies to fight diseases and aging, said researchers.

For example, bats have mutated or completely eliminated several genes involved in inflammation; scientists can develop drugs to inhibit these genes in humans.

Bats Offer Clues to Treating COVID-19 Secrets to Longevity and Disease Tolerance – SciTechDaily

Batsthe only flying mammalsare highly mobile, constantly bringing new pathogens into their communities. According to University of Rochester biologists, thats one reason they have evolved to have immunity to so many viruses that plague humans, who have only recently (in evolutionary terms) come to be highly mobile and more likely to live in densely populated centers.

To combat COVID-19, we need to regulate our immune systems to resemble those of bats.

Bats are often considered patient zero for many deadly viruses affecting humans, including Ebola, rabies, and, most recently, the SARS-CoV-2 strain of virus that causes coronavirus.

Although humans experience adverse symptoms when afflicted with these pathogens, bats are remarkably able to tolerate viruses, and, additionally, live much longer than similar-sized land mammals.

What are the secrets to their longevity and virus resistance?

According to researchers at the University of Rochester, bats longevity and capacity to tolerate viruses may stem from their ability to control inflammation, which is a hallmark of disease and aging. In a review article published in the journal Cell Metabolism, the researchersincluding Rochester biology professors Vera GorbunovaandAndrei Seluanovoutline the mechanisms underlying bats unique abilities and how these mechanisms may hold clues to developing new treatments for diseases in humans.

The idea for the paper came about when Gorbunova and Seluanov, who are married, were in Singapore in March before COVID-19 travel bans began. When the virus started to spread and Singapore went into lockdown, they were quarantined at the home of their colleague Brian Kennedy, director of the Centre for Healthy Aging at the National University of Singapore and co-author of the paper.

The three scientists, all experts on longevity in mammals, got to talking about bats. SARS-CoV-2 is believed to have originated in bats before the virus was transmitted to humans. Although bats were carriers, they seemed to be unaffected by the virus. Another perplexing factor: generally, a species lifespan correlates with its body mass; the smaller a species, the shorter its lifespan, and vice versa. Many bat species, however, have lifespans of 30 to 40 years, which is impressive for their size.

Weve been interested in longevity and disease resistance in bats for a while, but we didnt have the time to sit and think about it, says Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of Biology at Rochester. Being in quarantine gave us time to discuss this, and we realized there may be a very strong connection between bats resistance to infectious diseases and their longevity. We also realized that bats can provide clues to human therapies used to fight diseases.

While there have been studies on the immune responses of bats and studies of bats longevity, until their article, no one has combined these two phenomena, Seluanov says.

Gorbunova and Seluanov have studied longevity and disease resistance in other exceptionally long-lived animals, including naked mole rats. One common theme in their research is that inflammation is a hallmark of the aging process and age-related diseases, including cancer, Alzheimers, and cardiovascular disease. Viruses, including COVID-19, are one factor that can trigger inflammation.

With COVID-19, the inflammation goes haywire, and it may be the inflammatory response that is killing the patient, more so than the virus itself, Gorbunova says. The human immune system works like that: once we get infected, our body sounds an alarm and we develop a fever and inflammation. The goal is to kill the virus and fight infection, but it can also be a detrimental response as our bodies overreact to the threat.

Not so with bats. Unlike humans, bats have developed specific mechanisms that reduce viral replication and also dampen the immune response to a virus. The result is a beneficial balance: their immune systems control viruses but at the same time, do not mount a strong inflammatory response.

According to the researchers, there are several factors that may contribute to bats having evolved to fight viruses and live long lives. One factor may be driven by flight. Bats are the only mammals with the ability to fly, which requires that they adapt to rapid increases in body temperature, sudden surges in metabolism, and molecular damage. These adaptations may also assist in disease resistance.

Another factor may be their environment. Many species of bats live in large, dense colonies, and hang close together on cave ceilings or in trees. Those conditions are ideal for transmitting viruses and other pathogens.

Bats are constantly exposed to viruses, Seluanov says. They are always flying out and bringing back something new to the cave or nest, and they transfer the virus because they live in such close proximity to each other.

Because bats are constantly exposed to viruses, their immune systems are in a perpetual arms race with pathogens: a pathogen will enter the organism, the immune system will evolve a mechanism to combat the pathogen, the pathogen will evolve again, and so on.

Usually the strongest driver of new traits in evolution is an arms race with pathogens, Gorbunova says. Dealing with all of these viruses may be shaping bats immunity and longevity.

Thats not an invitation for humans to toss their masks and crowd together in restaurants and movie theaters. Evolution takes place over thousands of years, rather than a few months. It has only been in recent history that a majority of the human population has begun living in close proximity in cities. Or that technology has enabled rapid mobility and travel across continents and around the globe. While humans may be developing social habits that parallel those of bats, we have not yet evolved bats sophisticated mechanisms to combat viruses as they emerge and swiftly spread.

The consequences may be that our bodies experience more inflammation, Gorbunova says.

The researchers also recognize that agingseems to play an adverse role in humans reactions to COVID-19.

COVID-19 has such a different pathogenesis in older people, Gorbunova says. Age is one of the most critical factors between living and dying. We have to treat aging as a whole process instead of just treating individual symptoms.

The researchers anticipate that studying bats immune systems will provide new targets for human therapies to fight diseases and aging. For example, bats have mutated or completely eliminated several genes involved in inflammation; scientists can develop drugs to inhibit these genes in humans. Gorbunova and Seluanov hope to start a new research program at Rochester to work toward that goal.

Humans have two possible strategies if we want to prevent inflammation, live longer, and avoid the deadly effects of diseases like COVID-19, Gorbunova says. One would be to not be exposed to any viruses, but thats not practical. The second would be to regulate our immune system more like a bat.

In a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, biology professors Vera Gorbunova and Andrei Seluanov described the mechanisms underlying bats unique abilities and how these mechanisms may hold clues to developing new treatments for diseases in humans.

There may be a very strong connection between bats resistance to infectious diseases and their longevity. We also realised that bats can provide clues to human therapies used to fight diseases, said Gorbunova.

Bats are constantly exposed to viruses. They are always flying out and bringing back something new to the cave or nest, and they transfer the virus because they live in such close proximity to each other, said Seluanov.

Because bats are constantly exposed to viruses, their immune systems are in a perpetual arms race with pathogens.

Usually the strongest driver of new traits in evolution is an arms race with pathogens. Dealing with all of these viruses may be shaping bats immunity and longevity.

However, the study does not suggest for humans to toss their masks and crowd together in restaurants and movie theatres.

Evolution takes place over thousands of years, rather than a few months.

While humans may be developing social habits that parallel those of bats, we have not yet evolved bats sophisticated mechanisms to combat viruses as they emerge and swiftly spread.

The consequences may be that our bodies experience more inflammation, said Gorbunova.

Studying bats immune systems will provide new targets for human therapies to fight diseases and aging, said researchers.

For example, bats have mutated or completely eliminated several genes involved in inflammation; scientists can develop drugs to inhibit these genes in humans.

For the love of healthy living | NZBusiness Magazine | The Business Magazine For NZ SME – NZ Business

Forty Thieves owners Brent and Shyr Godfrey successfully steered their business through the pandemic storm and are now planning for a brighter future with new markets and new products.

n the day Jacinda Ardern announced New Zealands nationwide lockdown numerous customer emails suddenly appeared in Shyr Godfreys inbox, including one from Foodstuffs, all stating their expectations for ongoing product supply.

That was both fortunate and frightening, she recalls, because we didnt know what the future would bring.

Luckily the nut-based products produced by Forty Thieves, the Hibiscus Coast-based company that she started with husband Brent in 2016, are regarded as essential food items.

Rather than facing declining sales, as many businesses did amongst all the panic-buying for staples, Shyr says their sales went crazy over the lockdown period.

At the time of writing (two weeks into Level 2) Forty Thieves products such as the award-winning Salted Macadamia with Maple and Vanilla, and Chai Spiced Almond were still selling strong, and plans well advanced for upgrading to a larger factory.

Shyr and Brent first met in 2008 and both ended up working in Sydney Shyr was in graphic design, Brent in market research. They subsequently travelled the world, and learnt how to exist frugally which they say proved to be a great discipline for the early days of Forty Thieves.

Brainstorming business ideas back in New Zealand led to the idea of producing a range of nutrient-rich nut butters (think almonds, peanuts, macadamias) which they refer to as the original superfoods. It fitted in nicely with the fact that they both share a passion for fitness and healthy living (with Brent an experienced athlete) and sustainability (no plastic to see here!).

To get the business off the ground the couple chose the traditional route: rent a commercial kitchen by the hour, produce their own labelling, and then blitz various Farmers markets.

This strategy achieved product validation and it was on to health stores and food shows including the prestigious New Zealand Food Show, a deal with Farro Fresh, and finally, the big breakthrough: Foodstuffs supermarkets (New World and Pak n Save).

And the very day that Shyr was interviewed by NZBusiness, they received the green light to run an initial trial with Countdown.

Before they could afford sales reps to do the work for them, it was hard graft for Brent and Shyr over six months to get the brand established in the supermarkets. They were the face of the business, even for in-store tastings.

A lot of people start with an excellent product and then look to make it into a business, explains Shyr. But we knew we had the complementary skills and drive to do something different. We went the other way asking what do we love and what can we take to market? With our design and finance backgrounds we knew we could set ourselves apart from day one.

Lessons with hindsight

Looking back on the whole experience, Shyr and Brent believe its important not to become too attached to your products. Our first four products are no longer produced, says Shyr. And when we eventually switched focus to pure almond butter, sales went through the roof.

The lesson here is to listen to your customers right from day one. If a product isnt selling, then move on to others that will sell.

Those first products may get you established at the markets, but then its important to establish validation to gather research and feedback first-hand and act on it, she adds, which is why they eventually decided to introduce their own peanut butter.

Its also interesting to note that everything that sold well at the Farmers Markets went on to sell well at the supermarkets. Those markets are a great way to launch and test products and get instant feedback before you take on investment, develop new in-house infrastructure or buy additional equipment.

The key to marketing success is to be customer centric, says Shyr thats taking a customer is always right attitude and dealing with complaints immediately.

Its also about the two of them being the aforementioned face of the business, and about maintaining the highest standards possible around design, packaging, photography and marketing collateral. All to reflect their products premium positioning and highest quality ingredients.

Covids challenges

With some of their staff unable to work under lockdown and baby Natalia to care for, taking the business through Level 4 restrictions reminded Shyr and Brent of their early days.

It was very stressful, but you just had to make the most of the situation, says Shyr. We were just stoked that we could keep going.

They decided to switch focus to their online marketing and, after cutting costs and offering free shipping, watched online sales increase by up to 400 percent in one month.

The lockdown delayed their trial with Countdown, as supermarkets switched focus from new products to basics. But all the market uncertainty didnt stop the couple pressing ahead with new products covering new categories.

Theyve also been succeeding in offshore markets with shipments to the US and China before the lockdown, and sales to Australian customers via Amazon.

Another positive from the lockdown was the opportunity not just to focus on marketing and production, but experience some enforced lifestyle. Suddenly we were forced to stay home and take daily walks along the beach. It all helped us to remember why we got into our own business in the first place. It was an opportunity to step back a little, refocus, and think about our goals for the next five years, says Shyr.

The couples advice to other small business owners still feeling their way through the disruption is to stay positive and assess the landscape. Can you develop online sales? Should you readjust your product offering or the channels you sell through?

And how can you look after your customers more? Forty Thieves offered free shipping. People were really thankful for that, remembers Shyr.

Exciting times ahead

Shyr and Brent have every reason to be excited about Forty Thieves future. Their new factory in Stanmore Bay comes with better equipment and greater efficiencies and will also provide the capability to enter new product categories.

Additional supermarket sales will boost revenues, and with some serious marketing in offshore markets such as Australia, the US, UK and China, export sales are also tipped to grow.

Forty Thieves is also riding the new wave of popularity for plant-based products that are good for people and good for the planet.

In a nutshell, there are no shortcuts when youre in business for the long haul.

Healthy Living: Nutrition can have impact on your mental health – Leitrim Observer

For the last few weeks I've been writing about the link between your physical health and what you eat, but did you know that nutrition also has a big impact on your mood and mental health.

Although managing stress, anxiety and depression can be difficult, and there is no one size fits all solution, some people may benefit from seeing their doctor and following their recommendations while for others a more holistic approach may work better.

Regardless what route you decide to take, the right diet combined with appropriate lifestyle changes can have a profound impact on your mood.

A very large body of evidence now exists that suggests diet is as important to mental health as it is to physical health and a healthy diet has been shown to be protective whilst an unhealthy diet has been shown to be a risk factor for depression and anxiety.

If you have been reading my weekly column over the last couple of months you will have seen me regularly write about blood sugar balance, and how it can benefit your energy and weight loss.

An imbalance of blood sugar has also been linked to stress, anxiety and depression.

Did you know that up to 50% of low mood is down to blood sugar imbalances?

Learning how to manage your blood sugar is the key to having more energy, a better mood and controlling your weight . Feeling more confident about the way you look is in itself an excellent way to boost feelings of self-worth

So how do we balance our blood sugars?

Eat regularly, three main meals a day and two snacks if you need them (if going more than four hours between meals)

Eat protein with every meal or snack.

Choose low GL (glycaemic load) carbohydrates that keep your blood sugar level even and minimises mood-altering blood sugar dips.

So what foods help your mood?

Certain foods may play a role in the cause of mood disorders, or they may make symptoms worse.

A nutritious brain diet follows the same logic as a heart healthy regimen or weight control plan. You want to limit sugary and high-fat processed foods, and opt for nutritious foods that will provide you with, sufficient protein, giving you an optimum supply of essential amino acids.

Make sure to have some form of protein with every meal and snack.

High mood-boosting Vitamin B foods like nuts, seeds, beans and green leafy vegetables, which also include essential zinc and magnesium, are good for mental stability, as zinc helps control the bodys response to stress and low levels have been linked to depression.

It has been shown that people with low B12 levels have more brain inflammation and higher rates of depression and dementia.

Falling short on B vitamins has long been linked to low moods with studies suggesting there is a definite link between vitamin B and stress levels.

When we eat real food that nourishes us, it becomes the protein-building blocks, enzymes, brain tissue, and neurotransmitters that transfer information and signals between various parts of the brain and body.

Certain nutrients are linked to changes in a brain protein that helps increase connections between brain cells. A diet rich in nutrients like omega-3s and zinc boosts levels of this substance.

On the other hand, a diet high in trans fats and refined sugars has a very potent negative impact on brain proteins.

Few of us get enough omega-3 fats in our diet, and these are key to our mood and brain function. The dry weight of our brain is literally 60% fat - so not surprising that we depend on a daily intake of essential fats.

EPA, DPA and DHA all help build and rebuild your brain, and are part of the equation for happiness. The higher your blood levels of omega-3 fats, the higher your levels of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin are likely to be.

Omega-3 fats help build receptor sites as well as improving their function.

Sources of omega-3 fats: oily fish (salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines, cod, tuna, halibut), walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds. Most plant sources of omega-3 do not contain the long-chain fatty acids mentioned above. Although the body can make those from short-chain omega-3s like the ones found in nuts and seeds conversion is poor and it is difficult to get enough omega-3 that way, therefore If you are vegetarian or vegan, consider taking an omega-3 supplement for example DHA from seaweed.

Last but certainly not least is the all-important gut health!

The human gut is lined with more than 100 million nerve cells, Yes, we have brain cells in our large intestines!

This explains why antibiotics which disturb the gut microbiome may interact with psychotropic medications, and influence our mood . This also explains why mood disorders are so prevalent in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Chemicals implicated in depression such as serotonin are also found in the gut; 90% of serotonin is manufactured in the digestive tract and not the brain. Many antidepressants work by increasing serotonin. It has been shown that gut bacteria produce many other neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, and GABA, which are critical for mood, anxiety and motivation. The gut microbiome can cause changes in how our brains react.

Also, stress makes us more likely to develop mood disorders. And stress makes the gut more permeable to bacteria and this may lead to dysbiosisan imbalance of good to bad gut bacteria. In sum, depression is maybe caused by dysfunctional gut-brain-immune system interactions.

Good gut bacteria or the absence of some bad ones can make us more resilient to depressive states after stressors or trauma. It is not surprising that chronic exposure to stress is associated with a higher incidence of depression, anxiety and PTSD. But not everyone who faces stress develops a depression or anxiety , and not everyone who experiences a trauma develops PTSD, and may be due to the individuals gut health!

To help balance your gut bacteria introduce some fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt with live active cultures, which provide good gut bacteria.

How to live longer – the dinner ‘you should avoid’ to protect against an early death – Express

The key to living longer could be to eat a healthy, balanced diet - including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day - as well as regular exercise. But you could boost your life expectancy by avoiding red or processed meats, it's been claimed.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a well-rounded diet is crucial to prolonging your lifespan.

You could also boost your lifespan by doing regular exercise. Its the miracle cure weve all been waiting for, according to the NHS.

Making some small diet or lifestyle changes could help to increase your life expectancy and avoid an early death.

One of the easiest ways to lower your chances of an early death, and bowel cancer, is to avoid red or processed meats, it's been revealed.

READ MORE: How to live longer - the supplement that could help boost your life expectancy

People that regularly eat the meats are more likely to develop bowel cancer, said dietitian Juliette Kellow and nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

Everyone should avoid processed meats altogether, while limiting themselves to just 500g of red meat each week, they said.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers to be diagnosed in the UK.

Most cases arise from polyp growths in the bowel, and around 40,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in the UK.

The digestive tract is designed to extract all the goodness from our diet, they said in their book, Eat Better Live Longer - Understand What Your Body Needs To Stay Healthy.

Each part of the gut is functionally different and responds better to certain foods.

Fibre-rich foods and probiotics promote gut health, while refined foods are linked to disease.

Limit red meat to no more than 500g a week and avoid processed meat altogether. Both are linked to a higher risk of bowel cancer. Processed meat has also been shown to increase the risk of stomach cancer.

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of bowel cancer by eating more nuts, added the nutritionists.

Everyone should aim to eat a single serving of nuts every day - about the equivalent to around 28g.

They contain minerals, phytochemical and essential fats that keep the heart healthy and protect against bowel cancer.

Its hugely important to speak to a doctor if youre worried about the signs or symptoms of bowel cancer.

Regular exercise is a crucial aspect to improving overall health, and helping you to live longer.

People that do regular exercise are up to 50 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and some cancers, said the NHS.

It may even slash the chances of coronary heart disease and stroke by up to 35 percent.

All UK adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.

TikTok’s Flo Simpson and Her Mission to Fit Into Her Jeans – Redbrick

If you have been scrolling through TikTok recently you are bound to have come across 20-year-old Flo Simpson who has been on a mission to fit back into her jeans. Uploading the first of her daily food vlogs on 5th May 2020, Flo has taken the video-sharing site by storm, amassing 567.7 K followers- a figure that increases each day. Flo uses her videos, which at time of writing have a total of 13 million likes, to document her daily food intake, which usually consists of three balanced meals and healthy snacks throughout the day. Speaking to Portsmouths The News, Flo explained the inspiration for her health journey, my one-year relationship ended during lockdown and I had put on a lot of weight. Like a lot of people, I had probably been drinking and eating too much. I found this pair of jeans which I wore two months before my relationship ended and I wanted to get back to that place.

Flos popularity on the app is likely due to her healthy approach to weight loss, a refreshing change from the countless unsustainable diets often encouraged on social media

Flos popularity on the app is likely due to her healthy approach to weight loss, a refreshing change from the countless unsustainable diets often encouraged on social media. The promotion of such diets and other weight loss related content on platforms like Instagram has assuredly been on the rise since lockdown, with many unqualified influencers promoting unhealthy habits and dangerously low-calorie intakes. TikTok is saturated with videos that glamorize eating disorders, and while some people use the platform to document their recovery, others use it to create challenges like the headphone around waist challenge which sees users prove how slim they are by wrapping their headphones around their waist several times. Even content that appears to be of a joking nature, like many of the videos made with the Benjinx So you think Im skinny? sound, ultimately contribute to the damaging message that being perceived as skinny is something that young girls should strive for.

In her interview with The News Flo stated, I want to show people you can lose weight in a healthy way. Like with every platform, there are videos of people showing that they eat just carrots and hummus. Its not only unrealistic, its unhealthy and damaging. Allowing herself to enjoy family BBQs and socially distanced drinks with friends, Flo ensures her lifestyle is not overly restrictive, and on day 26 of her journey celebrated the completion of her dissertation with a cheat day. The Solent University graduate is honest with her audience, admitting in one video: my diet has been a write off this week, I know its not been great, Ive not been eating very well and Ive not really done much exercise. Still, on day 36 of her weight loss journey Flo achieved her goal and was met with thousands of comments congratulating her as she fitted into her jeans.

Flo ensures her lifestyle is not overly restrictive, and on day 26 of her journey celebrated the completion of her dissertation with a cheat day

Since achieving her original goal Flo has reassured her audience that she will continue to post daily vlogs as she aims to fit into her jeans more comfortably, and has started a body positive YouTube channel which already has 39 K subscribers. Flos success has also inspired others to begin their own healthy lifestyle vlogs. While some of her audience accused these people of copying Flo, she showed support, if watching my videos has inspired someone to embark on a similar journey to me then it fills me with absolute joy, she reminded her audience, we should all be supporting each other rather than tearing each other down. Lifestyle vlogs that focus on balance, overall health and wellbeing should be seen as a welcomed change to the fad diets, detox teas and overly strenuous workouts that have dominated social media for long.

High blood sugar can be deadly for Covid patients, even if they don’t have diabetes – Economic Times

BEIJING: Patients with COVID-19 who have elevated blood sugar levels without a previous diagnosis of diabetes may be at a high risk of death and an increased risk of severe complications from the infectious disease, a new study says.

According to the scientists, including those from the Tongji Medical College in China, earlier studies had established high blood sugar as associated with an increased risk of mortality and poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

However, they said direct correlation between fasting blood glucose (FBG) level at admission to hospital, and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients - without diagnosed diabetes - has not been well established.

In the new study, published in the journal Diabetologia, the researchers examined the association between FBG on admission, and the 28-day mortality of COVID-19 patients without previously diagnosed diabetes in two hospitals in China.

The study assessed data from all consecutive COVID-19 patients with a known outcome at 28-days and FBG measurement at admission from 24 January 2020 to 10 February 2020 in two hospitals based in Wuhan, China.

"Blood sugar testing and control should be recommended to all COVID-19 patients even if they do not have pre-existing diabetes, as most COVID-19 patients are prone to glucose metabolic disorders," they wrote in the study.

Myths & Facts About HypertensionHypertension is the most common and preventable risk factor for heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and blockage of leg arteries causing pain and gangrene. While it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle, one must educate oneself to control hypertension. One can keep blood pressure (BP) under control with certain changes like eating a healthy diet (fruits/vegetables), working out daily, taking up a weight loss programme, quitting smoking, managing stress with yoga/meditation, and following up on medications and doctor's appointment regularly. From lowering sodium intake to reducing alcohol intake, Dr Nikesh D Jain, Consultant Cardiologist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, shares facts and myths about hypertension.

Hypertension May Not Have Symptoms Hypertension is known as the 'silent killer'. More than 50% hypertension patients do not show any signs or symptoms for many years, and continue to damage blood vessels of important organs in the body. Some patients may experience symptoms like headache, palpitations, chest pain and breathlessness due to hypertension. As soon as an individual turns 18, he/she should ensure checking blood pressure. There is an increasing prevalence of hypertension in younger age group, and is expected to increase further due to lifestyle changes.

Ditch The Table Salt Salt restriction is the most important and effective way to control BP. Daily salt intake should not exceed 4-6 gram/day. Restricting salt means cutting down on intake of Sodium (Na). Apart from the regular table salt, we end up consuming a lot of sodium (approximately 75%) hidden in processed foods like sauce, packaged foods, chips, and junk food. While buying prepared or packaged foods, always look for Sodium (Na) content, and avoid high intake sodium-rich food items.Kosher salt and table salt are the same, and both contain 40% sodium.

Hypertension Is Hereditary Have a strong family history of hypertension puts you at a greater risk of developing the condition at an early age. However, healthy lifestyle changes have helped patients in delaying the onset of hypertension, and even preventing it in some cases.

How Alcohol Affects Blood Pressure Alcohol, when consumed in excess, causes hypertension, stroke, heart failure, irregular heartbeats, high cholesterol, cancer, and even accidents.Alcohol intake should be restricted to two standard drinks per day for men and one drink daily for women. One standard drink equals 14 grams of pure alcohol - which is found in 340 grams of beer, over 110 grams of wine and more than 40 grams of distilled spirits.

They said a total of 605 COVID-19 patients were enrolled in the study, including 114 who died in hospital.

According to the study, the median age of participants was 59 years and 322 were men.

A total of 208 individuals had one or more underlying conditions, but were not diagnosed with diabetes, the scientists said, adding that high blood pressure was the most common co-morbidity.

The researchers said almost one third of the patients fell into the highest category of FBG on admission, which they said would result in a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes if found consistently.

The study noted that a further 17 per cent were in the range that would be considered pre-diabetic, while more than half were in the 'normal' FBG range.

Based on the findings, the researchers said patients in the highest FBG group were 2.3 times more likely to die than those in the lowest.

They said men were 75 per cent more likely to die than women, and that patients with higher CRB65 scores were also at higher risk of death.

"This study shows, for the first time, that elevated FBG at admission is independently associated with increased 28-day mortality and percentages of in-hospital complications in COVID-19 patients without previous diagnosis of diabetes," the scientists noted in the study.

According to the scientists, COVID-19 patients might suffer from high blood sugar brought about by other conditions.

Diabetes is a silent killer that comes unannounced. In most cases, the patients don't find out until it causes long-term damage. Here are some warning signs you should watch out for.

"Patients with conditions not related to diabetes, such as severe sepsis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and traumatic brain injury tend to have abnormally high blood sugar," the researchers wrote in the study.

Citing the limitations of the study, the scientists said the findings were based on a retrospective analysis of patient data.

They said the study did not analyse levels of the molecule glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) which is a long-term blood sugar control indicator that helps distinguish patients with poor long-term blood sugar control from those with stress hyperglycaemia.

The researchers added that they did not have sufficient data to study the effect of glucose-lowering treatment such as insulin on the outcome of the patients.

However, they believe acute hyperglycaemia is more important than long-term blood glucose control in predicting the clinical outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

The authors suggest that possible mechanisms for this increased mortality include high blood glucose-induced changes in blood clotting, worsening of the function of the walls of blood vessels, and overproduction of inflammatory immune system molecules.

They said measuring fasting blood glucose levels can facilitate the assessment of prognosis and early intervention to help improve the overall outcomes in COVID-19 treatment.

For The Healthy YouAs fancy as it sounds, the idea of boosting immunity, has proven to be difficult to materialise in reality. For years, researchers from across the world have been struggling to figure out the accurate formula to achieve a good immune system. Until the formula is known, it is recommended to adopt a healthy lifestyle for an enhanced immune function, and to keep the body intact and healthy.Making healthy lifestyle changes in terms of diet, exercise and managing stress, in addition to other factors, can go a long way in helping the immune system get the boost it requires. On International Immunology Day, Chennai-based clinical nutritionist, lactation consultant and diabetes educator - Ramya Ramachandran - shares five tips that can give your life a healthy spin.

Opt For A Balanced DietA balanced diet with the right amount of nutrients can do wonders in boosting a persons immunity, and keeping you away from diseases.Ginger, garlic, star anise, omega-3 fats, flax seeds are some foods that have antiviral and anti-inflamma
tory properties. These can be included in your meals daily. Its also important to focus on micronutrients which have a major impact on health. To add the required amount of micronutrients to any diet, one can look at home fortification as an alternative. In this method, a commercially available product is conveniently utilised on a daily basis to prevent nutrition deficiencies. Power mixes of rice and flour avaiable in the market is one such example of food fortification, which increases the micronutrient value of home-cooked meals.

Quit SmokingThis is one of the basic requirements. Smoking is a big NO for the overall wellbeing of the body as it negatively impacts on both adaptive and innate immunity. It slowly kills the natural effectiveness of the immune systems defences. If you are a regular smoker, it is advisable to quit it as soon as possible. One can also adopt alternatives like nicotine patches as it can helps to quit smoking and are relatively less harmful.

Rest Your Mind And Soul With MeditationChronic stress is responsible for releasing hormone cortisol, which can ruin the overall immune response of the body. Meditation goes a long way in keeping stress in check. Various mobile-based apps can help one to remain peaceful and mindful throughout the day with various features. Other healthy strategies to deal with stress may include yoga and pranayama.

Getting A Good Night's SleepMost of us underestimate the power and importance of adequate sound and refreshing sleep. Lack of proper sleep can activate the inflammatory immune response, which can reduce reactivity to vaccines, further leading to the release of excess stress hormones. It will ultimately weaken the immune system.A minimum of 7-8 hours of regular sleep is a must to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm, and help the bodys T-Cells (also known as immune cells) to kill the pathogens. A night of good sleep also helps in burning calories.

Healthy Living: Nutrition can have impact on your mental health - Leinster Leader

This One Activity Ticks Off 3 of the Blue Zones’ Markers of Longevity – MSN Money

Photo: Getty Images/Westend61 gardening and longevity

People who live in the world's Blue Zoneslike Sardinia, Italy and Okinawa, Japanhave perfected the art of staying alive and well. Longevity expert Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones Kitchen, has made studying these superhumans and their wellness practices his life's work. During a recent online master class on all things immortality (I mean, er, longevity) hosted by the Global Wellness Institute, Buettner said that one everyday outdoor activity sets the folks in the Blue Zones up for thriving well into their triple-digits: gardening.

"[In] all Blue Zones, people continue to garden even into their 90s and 100s," said Buettner. "Gardening is the epitome of a Blue Zone activity because it's sort of a nudge: You plant the seeds and you're going to be nudged in the next three to four months to water it, weed it, harvest it. And when you're done, you're going to eat an organic vegetable, which you presumably like because you planted it." That means gardening hits three of the nine Blue Zones pillars of healthy living in just one activity: one, move naturally; two, manage your stress; and three, eat mostly plants.

Gardening ticks the first box, "move naturally," because it calls for incorporating movement into your daily tasks (like walking to work or biking to the grocery store) rather than, say, setting aside an hour aside for a HIIT workout. As Emily Kiberd, DC, founder of New York CitysUrban Wellness Clinic, previously told Well+Good: Their lives are dynamic. Not a constant go, go, go, but a mix of movement, then rest. You can water your plants, then dive back into the book you were reading or go back to work with the energy granted to you by a small burst of movement.

Meanwhile, research has also suggested that planting flowers, herbs, or fruits and veggies also plants the seeds for good mental health (fulfilling that second Blue Zones pillar). Gardening has been found to delay symptoms of dementia. Green exercise, aka doing physical activity while exposed to or in nature, has been linked to longevity, and there's no discounting the fact that you'll quickly rack up your 150 minutes of government-recommended exercise each week as you tend to your plant babies (which is also a win for your brain's well-being).

Last, but certainly not least, is the fact that having a garden make it easier to access fresh, whole foods. As Buettner pointed out, planting your own fruits and veggies delivers you one step closer to actually eating them. What you do choose to plant and harvest will contribute to the overall diversity of your diet. That a big deal, when you consider that 2018 research found that people with the healthiest, most diverse guts ate 30 or more different types of plants per week. Plant your garden right, and at least a large fraction of the gut-friendly plants in your diet could be hand-grown.

If you don't know the first thing about buying seeds, soil, fertilizer, and all that jazz, remember that gardening doesn't have to be as complicated as purchasing an acre of farmland. For one thing, you could try sprouting: an easy, indoor method for growing your own grains, beans, legumes, or veggies. This also allows you to eat your plants when they're young and thus more nutrient-dense than they would be otherwise.

If you have some backyard or balcony space and thus have more room for planting (either in the ground or in planters), consider this your motivation to brush up on the basics of not-killing-things and really do your research as far as what should be planted when, how the heck you should water your little seeds, and the perfect sunlight-to-shade ratio. To really feel like you're becoming a student of the plant kingdom, you can even sign up for one of these online gardening workshops to make your love for the activity... blossom.

Should you find yourself feeling stuck, just remember: The people of the Blue Zones had to start from scratch to earn the green thumbs they have today. And hey, with any luck, you'll have one hundred years to learn how to plant, care for, harvest, and eat the perfect tomato.

Michelle Dickinson: Research finds that every dog year isn’t equal to seven human years – Newstalk ZB

text by Francesca Giuliani-Hoffman, CNN

How do you compare a dog's age to that of a person? A popular method says you should multiply the dog's age by 7 to compute how old Fido is in "human years."

But new research published Thursday in the Cell Systems journal debunks that method. And that's because the scientists behind a new study say dogs and humans don't age at the same rate.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new formula that takes into account that variance. Tracking molecular changes in the DNA of Labrador retrievers, and in particular "the changing patterns of methyl groups" in their genome, according to a release, the study shows how dogs age at a much faster rate than humans early in their lives, then slow down after reaching maturity.

"This makes sense when you think about it after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasn't an accurate measure of age," lead author Trey Ideker is quoted as saying.

Based on the study, a one-year-old dog compares to a 30-year-old human, a four-year-old dog to a 52-year-old human. The rate of aging decreases after dogs turn 7.

The new formula "is the first that is transferable across species," and scientists plan to test their findings on other dog breeds to study the impact of longevity on their findings, according to a release.

Researchers also believe that observing changes in the methylation patterns before and after the use of anti-aging products could help veterinarians make more informed decisions in terms of diagnostics and treatment.

A graphic in the study makes the age comparisons intuitive and provides some helpful context for dog owners, including the scientists themselves.

"I have a six-year-old dog she still runs with me, but I'm now realizing that she's not as 'young' as I thought she was," Ideker is quoted as saying.

A 360-degree approach to getting the perfect glowy skin this summer – Emirates Woman

The glow

When it comes to supplements, are we too reliant on these miracle capsules for skin-deep beauty? We look at a 360-degree approach instead.

Over the years of curating our routines and discovering hero products that deliver exactly what we need, one thing we all have come to realise is that beauty isnt only skin-deep. There has been an evolution of products on the market that promise to nourish our complexion, and they are not just the formulas you apply on the surface. Many well-known brands have extended their skincare lines beyond topical products by introducing supplements that help tackle concerns from the inside. See it as a 360-degree approach to your daily routine.

The glow heroes:C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil Dhs155 Sunday Riley at Sephora; Charlottes Magic Serum Crystal Elixir Dhs285 Charlotte Tilbury

Some specialists believe that topical products only address around 20 per cent of skin issues, which naturally forces us to look to supplements as well as personal habits. Skin is the largest organ of our body. It is meant to protect us, but it is also a mirror a mirror that reflects our health and the faults in the body, Zuzana Hrdinova, a Lifestyle Consultant and Health Coach, explains.

Despite the nutritional supplement market being a multi-billion-dollar industry, the data to support the use of most of these products is poor. There is very little evidence that any supplement or a multivitamin can reverse the course of a disease or play a role in our skin health, she adds.

Shirley DSouza, a Certified Ketogenic & Primal living coach, agrees that there are a lot of decoy supplements out there in the market, especially when claiming a whole list of benefits, but does believe some supplements can be beneficial in replenishing the nutrients that are lost through the agricultural process.

The glow heroes:Integrative Beauty Dhs300 SkinFusion; Skin Food + Prebiotic Dhs184 The Nue Co. at net-a-porter.com

Supplements may be useful for people who are unable to get adequate nutrition from diet alone, adds health coach, Sheetal Ramchandani. For example, it is recommended that vegans take a supplement of vitamin B12 since it isnt adequately available in plant foods and some specific conditions, like gastrointestinal issues that can affect nutrient absorption, call for more than high nutrition and require extra support that supplements can provide.

Zinc is one of the widely recommended supplements that support the immune system, while Omega 3 repairs the skin barrier. Iron can also be extremely beneficial, especially for those prone to eczema or psoriasis. But like with anything, seeking professional advice is the best way for you to know for sure that what you are taking is beneficial, as Hrdinova points out: If you take calcium, magnesium or zinc, but you are deficient in Vitamin D, you will not be absorbing those minerals and hence you will not see any results.

Vitamin C and E are emerging as skincare heroes among the beauty insiders as they are seen as powerful antioxidants. Collagen supplements are also on the rise. As we age, we produce less collagen that results in wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity. It is still hard to judge whether the collagen you ingest will have the same properties when it reaches your skin as the digestion process breaks it down, so perhaps its more beneficial to look at products that encourage collagen production. Chicken soup, for example, is rich in amino acids which encourages our bodies to produce collagen. One big change I would add to a diet is bone broth chicken or beef which is full of collagen but more importantly full of electrolytes and has properties that help, our gut health a lot more. Our gut health is important as it is our main communication to the brain, hormones and nerves, DSouza reveals.

The glow heroes:Skinesis Stem Cell Collagen Activator Dhs685 Sarah Chapman at Harvey Nichols Dubai; Super Seed Supplement Dhs162 Votary

It appears that all of our supplement trails lead us back to something we can easily change our diet. There are certain nutrients that help us to get the look of glowing, healthier skin and slow down the ageing process, Hrdinova explains. Essentials are vitamin C, E, A, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, copper, zinc, selenium, but also vitamin B and iron. All these nutrients are available in a balanced diet. My advice for anybody who wants to have smoother and clearer complexion and glossy, silky hair is to eat healthy food including lots of fruit and vegetables, drink sufficient water, exercise frequently, get out in the fresh air, get proper rest and learn to manage your stress levels.

DSouza also champions a healthy lifestyle, promoting a balanced diet and cutting down on junk food. Cucumber and kale added to our diet has properties of naturally hydrating our skin, the nutrient silica is a trace mineral found in high levels inside cucumbers, she explains. Silica contributes to the growth and maintenance of connective tissue throughout your body.

We need to limit eating things in plastic or packets with long shelf life and eat more natural basic ingredients, she continues. If you cannot pronounce the additive or do not know the added preservative do not eat it.

Hrdinova echoes this saying, Excessive consumption of refined sugars and artificial sweetener and trans fats (fried food) can cause inflammation which may lead to a breakdown in collagen and elastin and have a negative impact on the skins strength and elasticity. Too much of caffeine from coffee or energy drinks have an impact on the hormonal levels in our body and may lead to breakouts of acne.

The only additional supplement DSouza would add for a glowing complexion is a probiotic at least with a minimum of 1 billion colony forming units and containing either genus Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium or Saccharomyces boulardii.

Looking at the busy skincare industry promising a miracle solution with every new launch, it is easy to become overwhelmed at the options that are before you. The bottom line, take a closer look at your diet, seek advice if you want to introduce supplements, and continue to enhance your skincare routine. A glowing and healthy complexion requires attention from all angles, especially if you want to achieve long-lasting results.

Special ring blessing held on hospital ward for mother with cancer who will miss daughter’s wedding – expressandstar.com

Lorraine Cheal has lung and brain cancer and is receiving palliative care at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Her daughter Melissa, age 27, is marrying her partner Jacob McCausland in December this year but knows her mum will not be able to make her big day.

So with the help of the hospital's care team and ward staff, the couple from Cannock visited Lorraine's bedside on Saturday with hospital Chaplain Anthony Swaby to perform a special ring blessing ceremony.

The bride had her wedding dress on and the groom was kitted out in his suit for the big day, while Lorraine and husband Ian also put on smart clothes.

Special needs teacher Melissa said it was an "unforgettable" day. She said her mother had never smoked or drank and had led a healthy lifestyle.

She said: "It meant such a lot to us because mum has been planning the wedding with me and was there when I chose my dress.

"It was important for us to make this memory with her and when we have our wedding in December we will make sure the video that my godmother took of today's ceremony plays a part.

"Mum smiled all the way through which was lovely as she wasnt so well yesterday. We feel blessed to have this opportunity and to be able to share something so special."

Groom Jacob, 26, a civil servant, added: "Melissa wore her wedding dress and the room had been decorated by staff; it seems a bit surreal as everything has happened so quickly. But it means so much to us both that this could be arranged."

Ward 7 Sister Laura Trow added: "Melissa looked absolutely beautiful, stunning. We send her and Lorraine all our love."
