Bravely Aligning Health and Healthcare – State of Reform – State of Reform

Betty Bekemeier, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, is the Director of the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice. She is also the Kirby & Ellery Cramer Endowed Professor at the University of Washington School of Nursingand Adjunct Professor in theSchool of Public Health. In this commentary, she discusses collaboration and alignment of health care and public health. This piece is part of a series of commentaries focused on transforming public health that will be released throughout this week. The first commentary is available here.

For decades we have talked about aligning medicine and public health and now healthcare and public health. In Washington, the Accountable Communities of Health are meant to bring us together to (finally) make this happendespite differing incentives, silod systems, and serving some of the same populations. Yet, even in 2020 we still arguably experience chronic disease management making up the majority of the effort of the healthcare delivery services (provided largely by primary care systems) and we see infectious disease control as the bread and butter of public health systems (provided largely by state, local, and tribal government.)

The novel coronavirus pandemic, embedded within the racism of our nations larger, deeper, and more complex pandemic of racist structures and systems; requires something very different of all of us committed to health equity and healthier communities. It demands that we be willing to rethink, restructure, and reinvest our resources into one integrated system that is truly health promoting for all. Such a system focuses on creating healthy living conditions for marginalized populations and prioritizing the protection of health and safety before the treatment of disease and disability. Granted, this is easier said than done.

Even as chronic diseases keep patients revolving through the doors of their primary care providers (if they have one); exhausted providers know their patients struggle to pay for medications, to have access to healthy eating options, and remain unprotected from the stressors and exposures that underlie and exacerbate their illness. These issues are critical to the health of their patients, but generally outside the scope of typical medical practices. At the same time, public health practice professionals in state and local health departments are expected to play key roles in ensuring the conditions in which all people can be healthy in a community.

One would think these health cousinshealth care providers and public health practitionerswould work closely together to slow that revolving door for patients and providers, to inform one another of what ill community members experience and which communities are underserved, and to collaboratively address those underlying structures that create barriers to health and safety. But it rarely happens and never widely and deeply enough. Very differing incentives regarding cost, payment, prevention, savings, and more get in the way of true prevention and health promotion. Despite the population-focused, prevention promises that came out of the Affordable Care Act; the success of one cousin undermines the success of the other. Hard won public health prevention successes, for example, create healthcare savings that do not go back into under-resourced public health systems and, in fact, can undermine future funding, as attention to an issue fades.

Data and technology are also extreme hurdles for these cousins to get around. Public health systems are expected to collect, compile, and provide the data for community partners to use for identifying health threats and addressing underlying problems. Yet the technology and data systems that public health departments have at their disposal are often too old, inadequate, and slow to guide practice and lead timely community planning. Meanwhile healthcare delivery data are difficult to share with public health practice leaders, undermining opportunities for detecting emerging threats early or identifying populations that have been marginalized from servicepopulations at high risk if infected with COVID-19. Better and shared information technology and data systems could, for example, support data sharing that could identify communities at high risk for COVID-19 or help to better understand the specific health needs of underserved populations.

The barriers that stand between a collaborative, effective, familial alliance between healthcare and public health are numerous and incentives and data are just two. COVID-19 should be the family crisis that brings us (finally) together. COVID-19 throws chronic disease, infectious disease, and our broken systems together into one rather ineffectual mess that we need to come to terms with. Public health practice personnel have worked valiantly to stand up prevention, detection, contact tracing, communication, and community guidance systems. Their efforts will show to have saved countless 1,000s of lives. Healthcare personnel have worked tirelessly, and put themselves at great risk, to test and treat the many 1,000s of those exposed and infected. Yet we were all late, under-resourced, and inadequately collaborating around something that we have known for years would arrive.

While we all pay the price for this under preparation, people of color are particularly paying for this with their lives and families. Lets not waste a good crisis. Lets together assure the conditions in which people can be healthy and make 2020 the year that healthcare and public health systems took joint responsibility for creating a health system focused on healthnot illness. Rethinking, restructuring, and reinvesting our resources into one integrated system will be enormously difficult. But COVID-19 has made the need for this integration more apparent than ever and created an opportunity (indeed, a responsibility) for us to think and act differently together.

Businesses practice caution as they reopen in new normal – The Jakarta Post – Jakarta Post

The rising number of COVID-19 cases has forced businesses to keep their guard up.

At Ruang Selatan, a narrow path lined with green shrubs and nonornamental plants lead customers to a spacious restaurant on one side and a multifunction room on the other.

Situated in the busy district of Kemang, South Jakarta, Ruang Selatan is a meeting point for artists, filmmakers and women activists who wish to exhibit their work or hold public events.

It is also a haven for vegans and vegetarians and those with healthy living in mind because the restaurant also prepared food and beverages containing ingredients freshly picked from its surrounding garden.

After four months of closing its doors to customers, Ruang Selatan reopened on July 5 but with some changes necessary to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The owner, singer-songwriter Kartika Jahja, said the pandemic had reduced the venues income by up to 75 percent as the kitchen was open for deliveries only.

Sales were down because the online market is already saturated with people selling food as well, she said in an interview with The Jakarta Post.

Despite all that, we kept all our workers even though we could only pay fringe benefits or enough to cover their bare expenses.

The reopening of Ruang Selatan was limited to its restaurant and at only half capacity. Kartika removed the indoor tables that could seat more than two diners to discourage people from coming in large groups.

While it has mandated noncash transactions and applied health safety measures, budget restrictions did not allow Ruang Selatan to install no-touch technology to protect both workers and customers.

We decided to delay reopening as people were still afraid to eat out and the infection curve had yet to flatten. We will open the other room only when people are already comfortable with common activities, Kartika said.

We will evaluate how things are going at the end of this month and in the worst-case scenario, we have to be ready to temporarily close again.

The Jakarta administration has been easing social and physical restrictions for businesses in separate phases since early June. The first to open were standalone shops and restaurants, followed by shopping malls.

A cluster of restaurants and retail stores in South Jakarta called M Bloc Space, which opened in September last year, had to delay reopening for nearly two weeks as the community space was categorized as a shopping mall.

Before large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) were imposed in mid-March, the compound was a popular spot for young people with an interest in music, fashion, art and film.

The vacuum of activities did not last long, however, as M Bloc Space moved all its creative programs to the online sphere on March 30.

There have been live talk shows and digital music concerts streamed on social media as well as M Bloc Academy, paid-for classes with practitioners from various creative fields as lecturers using Zoom services.

"We actively continue our mainstay as a creative hub by holding online programs to pool ideas, inspire and to accommodate collaboration while encouraging the public to stay at home," coowner Wendi Putranto told the Post.

The rising numbers of followers on its social media accounts showed how impactful the programs were. The sponsored programs and paid classes were able to help M Bloc Space cover its expenses, including the salaries of 50 staffers and 100 outsourced workers.

"It is a hard situation for all of us, but we try our best to keep our business and everyone in it intact," Wendi added.

The compound reopened on June 15, but the aesthetic clinic Beyoutiful and the indoor concert hall M Bloc Live House remained closed.

With fears over customers flocking in, M Bloc Space limited the number of visitors inside its premises and required them to purchase e-vouchers before arriving. Meanwhile, small children, pregnant women and the elderly are temporarily barred from entering.

The online ticketing system, Wendi said, could help trace who visited the space and on what date.

"We take responsibility for everyone's safety. Our tenants have also made adjustments to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus by rearranging the restaurants and shops.

As income will likely not return to normal in light of the prolonging health crisis, Wendi and his team have considered changing the use of M Bloc Space'sconcert hall, which can accommodate 500 people, and turning it into a broadcasting studio where they could produce online content or materials for TV channels while still following health safety protocols.

We have to be creative moving forward, putting challenges and opportunities into consideration. We cant let the pandemic take away a community space for creative minds, Wendi said.

Concerted effort towards metabolic health to be extremely high-value during COVID-19: Interview – The Tech Panda

A Stanford-trained physician, Dr. Casey Means is an entrepreneur on a mission to improve human health and longevity, which led her to co-found the metabolic health startupLevels,of which she is now Chief Medical Officer.

She was recently interviewed byViveka Roychowdhuryon Express Healthcare on COVID-19 in India. To read the full interview, visit here.

Since we do not yet have a cure for SARS-nCoV2 yet, the COVID-19 pandemic has focussed attention on the need for long term preventive strategies, especially for chronic lifestyle-related conditions like hypertension, diabetes, etc. India has a high disease burden of such conditions so do you feel the right strategies are in place to help these patient populations cope with their conditions during COVID-19 lockdowns?

India isestimated to have over 77 millionpeople living with diabetes and around30 billionwith obesity, both diseases that have been linked toincreased mortality from SARS-CoV-2. It is also known thatimproved glucose control is significantly associated with better COVID-19 outcomes, so anything a government can do to support widespread glucose control may impact COVID-19 mortality. Given that food choices are a major contributor to glucose levels, support of programmes that increase access to metabolic health-promoting foods at scale (like vegetables, low-glycemic fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes), is likely to be a high-value intervention.

To date, the Indian government has takenmany strong policy stepsto respond to the virus, including travel advisories, social distancing and hand hygiene campaigns, aContainment Planbased on zones of COVID-19 impact, surveillance through swabs and serum testing, contact tracing, instatement of a curfew, and designating specific public health facilities for COVID-19 case management. Arecent policy report[5] from June 2020 assessing Indias response to COVID-19 highlighted a number of challenges still facing the country, including a doubling of cases since May 1st, low testing rates early on in the pandemic, and slow (but growing) domestic production of testing kits.

In addition, there issome evidencethat the COVID-19 response has disrupted other healthcare services, like inpatient and outpatient treatment of many common diseases including diabetes and high blood pressure. Furthermore, research suggests that surveys of people with type 2 diabetes show that only28 per cent of the surveyed individualsare checking their blood glucose levels regularly. Other papers havespeculated on barriersto self-management of diabetes including poor access to diabetes resources, limited adoption of telemedicine due to lack of definite legislation on this medium of practice, culturally entrenched food preferences, and lack of confidence in importance in home-based care in diabetes management. Unfortunately, researchers in Indiahave modelled that due to lockdown, there is expected to be a significant worsening of glycemic control and diabetes-related complications such as retinal disease, kidney disease, diabetes-related amputations, heart attack, and stroke.

Any country facing comorbid epidemics of diabetes, obesity, and COVID-19 will benefit from a swift and coordinated effort focused on fundamentally improving metabolic health. This includes strategiesfor optimising nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene, stress management, and toxin exposure, all of which have been shown to be involved in improving metabolic health. Additionally, rapidly increasing access to continuous glucose monitoring technology, which makes glucose monitoring significantly more granular and simple, and telehealth medicine and coaching, and can contribute to increasedmetabolic fitness, is another important step.Researchers in Indiarecently published that for individuals with diabetes in India, their blood sugars need to be better controlled and their health condition needs to be better monitored, even in the face of lockdown, through measures such as teleconsultation and telemedicine. Type 2 diabetes and obesity areboth largely preventable, and often reversiblewith healthy living strategies, so a concerted effort towards improving foundational metabolic health may prove to be an extremely high-value approach during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What are the strategies that policymakers as well as practising physicians in India need to put in place to nudge patient populations to make these changes?

India along with every other nation in the world facing obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease epidemics will benefit from multifaceted approaches that promote sustainable healthy living, which may span addressing and optimisinghealth systems, economic incentives, school and workplace environments, quality and labelling standards, and innovation and entrepreneurship. This might include supporting the production of protective foods such as minimally processed, phytochemical-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and disincentivising production of disease-promoting foods like refined grains, sugars, and processed meats. An additional approach could include increasing access to technology to allow individuals to make smarter food choices, such as continuous glucose monitors whichcan help guide a person to choose a metabolically-optimised diet. As of the last couple of years, India has recently upped its subsidies forsugarcane.

The communication renaissance interrupting the old world – Investment Magazine

Not such a long time ago, we lived in a world where people believed what companies and advertising agencies told them about a product or service. Individuals gathered around their television screens to receive a steady stream of information and listen intently to the truth delivered.

The change came with the evolution of technology; suddenly there were rivers of information flowing to these same people, in their same houses. They tried to keep up, taking in what the rivers had to tell them, but the quality was declining as the speed increased relentlessly. Soon enough, a tsunami of information flooded through peoples houses, bowling them over and disrupting their day-to-day living. Consumers have been living amidst this content flood for quite a few years now, and its fair to say they are fed-up, much smarter and more distrusting.

The modern world is in the midst of a communication renaissance. The old model of interruptive advertising does not work anymore.

Today, people are looking for guides. They are looking for products and services that will genuinely support them, that they can connect with, and not those that will interrupt, distract and solely exploit them for financial gain.

So, how do companies effectively and communicate key messages in the current climate?

Companies need to offer value by engaging people in a conversation that lets them know they understand what the customer is going through, what problem they are facing, that they empathise with them and are here to help. A secure emotional connection between companies and our customers should not be underestimated, especially at this time of uncertainty. It establishes trust, loyalty and longevity in the relationship.

Importantly, we need to stop talking about ourselves, how fast and efficient our services are and how many awards we have won. Most people are juggling and struggling with everything already on their plate, and we need to offer something genuinely helpful for people to listen.

To help us build trust, we can call upon a tool in our communication arsenal, both compelling and old in equal measure: story. Humans are story seeking creatures, and we are hard-wired for them. As much as 65 per cent of all human interactions take the form of social storytelling. Listening to stories activates the auditory cortex and left temporal cortex of our brain. We are receptive to stories, we learn from them, and when they exist, there is more potential for a more significant emotional connection. Fundamentally, it is a universal language we all respond to, and it can help us create clear and compelling communication.

Annette Simmons, the author of The Story Factor, says, People want faith, they want faith in you. It is possible by tapping into the story of our customer, understanding what they truly want, what problem they are encountering and offering our service as the trusted guide. Getting clear on our brands narrative creates clear, relevant messages that cut through the content chaos of today.

To be clear, this is not about writing a fanciful fantasy for our customers, but employing a basic story-framework (used by most script-writers) to guide us in creating compelling brand narratives. We are building a story for our brand. The story brand framework supports us in understanding our customers better and what motivates them. To foster authenticity and effectively communicate through our marketing channels: on our websites, through emails, sales letters, keynotes and more. We see successful brand stories displayed by some of the largest companies in the world, including Apples Think Different, Nikes Just Do It, North Faces Never Stop Exploring. It is fair to say that without a clear story today, people just wont listen.

Here are three principles of Donald Millers story branding framework to consider:

Firstly, we, as the company, need to adjust our perspective to see our customers as the hero of the story. What do they want? The story only begins when a hero knows what they want and set out to achieve that goal. What do your customers genuinely want and need from you right now? The clarity of this answer is essential to stay relevant and become genuinely helpful.

Secondly, we, as the company, need to position ourselves as the guide. Most stories have a guide that supports the hero along the journey. They understand the problem and offer them a plan, a tool or some wisdom to help them overcome it. By positioning our company as the guide, we can employ two crucial traits of empathy and authority. We make ourselves the trusted resource to help them overcome their challenge. Communication expert, Nancy Duarte affirms this by saying, position yourself as Yoda and your audience as Luke Skywalker. It is a small but powerful shift that honours the journey of the audience and positions us as a leader providing wisdom, products and services with our audience to survive. To clarify our role as guide, we ask the question, who or what is opposing the hero getting what they want? Simply, identify the problem you are helping to solve.

Finally, the company needs to understand the transformation to be supported. Stories transform the hero. What will the heros life look like after you have helped them overcome the challenge? Branding messages need to speak to this shift to let people know how we can help them transform from weak to strong, instability to security, chaos to simplicity. How will it make their life better?

A compelling story can aid companies to float on the river of this communication renaissance. Companies begin to take charge and steer the boat when they identify what their customer needs, address the overwhelming problem they are experiencing and offer them a lifeboat to help. Consumers are looking out for these invitations and messages to help them survive and thrive, ones that they can trust to guide them to safety.

Samantha Herbert will be speaking the upcoming FEAL National Conference on identifying common values and shared belief systems to build empathy and resilience via the art of story-branding.

Pancreatic cancer symptoms: The smelly symptom that may signal you have it – Express

"But it's important to be checked by a GP if your symptoms change, get worse, or do not feel normal for you."

You cannot always prevent pancreatic cancer evidence suggests you can lower your chances of getting it by making healthy lifestyle changes.

According to Cancer Research UK, around 20 out of 100 cases of pancreatic cancer in the UK (around 20 percent) are caused by smoking.

Studies have given mixed results but using Scandinavian snus (a type of smokeless tobacco popular in Norway and Sweden) could increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

"The best way for people who smoke to reduce their risk of cancer and improve their overall health, is to stop smoking completely," advises Cancer Research UK.

More than 10 in 100 pancreatic cancers in the UK (more than 10 percent) are also linked to being overweight or obese, warns the charity.

"This increase in risk could be because the pancreas makes more insulin in overweight people," it adds.

According to the NHS, you should also cut down on how much red and processed meat you eat.

You should also try to cut down on alcohol avoid drinking more than 14 units a week, the health body recommends.

It is worth noting that anyone can get pancreatic cancer, even if you do not think you have a higher chance of getting it.

"It's important to get any symptoms of pancreatic cancer checked by a GP," says the NHS.

The Veronicas On Their First Album In Six Years, ‘Human; – Marie Claire

What Was The Inspiration Behind New Single Biting My Tongue?

Jess: We've been finishing up this album, Human, and the first part of that piece is a big hitter. It's diving into the very human aspects of emotions on this album, and the different human experiences we've been going through. And this one draws on that really peak point of wanting to confess your love for someone that's really visceral. You've tried everything to bury that feeling or keep it in, but now you're at that point where you need to let somebody know. When we're creating a song, we really build an entire world around it, so we see visuals and hear production. And Lisa started this song with DNA and then brought this song to me, and it really embodied the spirit. It's that really fatalistic spirit that become like a bit of a part of how Lisa and I write.

Jess: I don't think that we ever think about our albums comparatively to each other. Rather like a cohesive period of time that embodies whatever we were going through at the time. And although we've been writing this album over a few years, the majority of it was created in a cohesive time period. It feels like a completion of something. It feels like we had all these mini-bursts through this creation. And that whatever shift needed to happen was completed by the end of this writing phase. And each record has felt like that. But our second record and this record, most predominantly for that feeling.

Jess: I don't think it's changed, as far as the dynamic of how Lisa and I love to work. Because it comes down to being as vulnerable as possible. It always has. When we first started songwriting, we were signed as songwriters before we were signed as artists, and it was us sitting on the floor with our guitars. Just writing really personal, intimate thoughts and feelings. Then it's always stayed that. It's just that we've also cultivated new relationships with different songwriters as well. And we have our really great chemistry with people that we're working with for this album.Toby Gad's one of them, and obviously DNA, who we did In My Blood with and Biting My Tongue with. Now as well, You Ruin Me. So when you cultivate that special relationship - because Lisa and I are so comfortable working with each other - when you bring other people in, you have to really trust them as well, because we work so intimately. We're just really blessed that we've had some great relationships with people, and that we continue to be able to create in that safe space.

Lisa:It hasn't hindered anything, but it definitely encourages us to go back to our roots, which is singing and playing guitar.I think, when it all sort of happened, the majority of our live shows did get cancelled. So for us, it became more introspective, and like Jess was saying, the creation process. So rather than focusing on the part where you're on stage, really just giving a lot of energy out. It actually started to go more introspective again and go back to that space of creation, rather than presentation.

And in every aspect of life, we went through that experience of introspection and starting to grow again from the ground up. We spent more time self-reflecting and growing individually, and really thinking about where life is taking us. Getting back on the acoustic guitars and just writing to write with no real urgency or agenda - rather just to feel that moment. And if this has taught us anything, it's that you're just taking day by day and living very much in the moment; because we don't know what the future holds. And there were schedules, and timeframes and expectation all sort of got thrown out the door and we just kind of had to take it day by day; and to really figure out what...There's coping mechanisms for that.

Lisa:It was a new experience. To a certain extent, we were saying, we tend to hermit by nature when we're in creation mode. And then the other half of the year where you become a Veronica, and on your onstage, and you're giving and all that. But the other side of us is, as Jessy said before, Lisa and Jessica are in creation mode.

So I think the year - obviously, for everyone - it was a bit unexpected, but we believe adaptability is the key to longevity. And you have to adapt in these times. It's the mindset. It's the perspective you take and what you do with that time. You can somehow create some sort of positive out of it. It's a way to adapt and survive. So we're very thankful for our health, and the time to spend with family, and each other, and to create again.

Jess: It's is about slowing down a little bit and reflecting, and being able to appreciate a lot. Being grateful for the journey that we've been on, the places that we've been to in the scene. And then try to find new ways to continue to grow. And that's so important for everybody, even while with standing still, what ways can we continue to grow: as people, as a community, as humanity? We're seeing those paradigm shifts greatly in the world right now.

Jess:Yeah. I think as far as the music community, there is a lot of anxiety at the moment. And I think it's just about supporting one another. Our scenes have always had that spirit anyway. So that hasn't really changed, except that I think that it's just more prevalent than ever. And I'm hoping that, it's a test on people's emotional and mental health right now. And I think it's just really important as a community of creatives that we can all be there for one another, first and foremost.

Jess: First and foremost, our Mummy has been our greatest inspiration. From the very beginning, she introduced us to a love of music and of everything that has been of value and importance to us. She was quite the activist, and nurturing person, within the LGBT community; within animal rights. Anything that we have grown to value deeply personally for ourselves, and through The Veronica's work as well, has really been inspired by her head-strength, and her values and morals. So our mums our absolute hero and our greatest inspiration.

Replacing meat and dairy with vegan alternatives cuts risk of heart disease by third, study finds – Yahoo! Voices

It's good news for vegans. (Getty Images)

Replacing meat and dairy with vegan alternatives can cut your risk of heart disease down by one third, a new study has found.

Its good news for vegans, as researchers have found that even those who occasionally dabble with a plant-based diet will see the benefits of it.

By subbing out red meat and replacing it with nuts and seeds each day, people are 30% less likely to die of a coronary heart disease.

Even if you cant give up meat in its entirety, those who are able to swap to a plant-based diet for just 3% of their daily intake can cut their chances of dying of heart disease down by a tenth.

Read more: Is vegan seafood the new trend in plant-based food?

The study suggests that in order to benefit people will need to reduce their intake of red meat, specifically. That doesnt always include replacing it with nuts and seeds, people still boasted positive results by replacing it with bread, cereal or pasta.

This way of eating cut the chances of premature death by heart disease down by a quarter.

The study, by the National Cancer Institute in Maryland, USA, is a big one, too, and has been worked on over the past 16 years, analysing data from 400,000 people to determine the results.

The scientists discovered what they describe as an inverse association which means that the more people swapped out their meat intake for pulses and grains the lower their risk became.

Even if people were only able to manage the diet change for a little portion of every day, they would still reap more benefits than those who ate meat as part of many of their meals.

Read more: Should vegans be given their own shelf in the office fridge?

This large cohort investigation showed small but significant associations between higher intake of plant protein and lower overall and cardiovascular disease mortality, Dr Demetrius Albanes, one of the authors of the study, explained.

Prominent inverse associations were observed for replacement of egg protein and red meat protein with plant protein, particularly for plant protein derived from bread, cereal, and pasta.

Story continues

Findings from this and previous studies provide evidence that dietary modifications in choice of protein sources may promote health and longevity.

Last year, it was announced that veganism had grown fourfold over the past four years as vegan foods became more readily available to plant-based eaters.

Eating out used to be a problem for vegans, who made up just 0.25% of the population in 2014, but as more people opt away from meat, restaurants and fast-food chains are left behind if they dont adapt to the UKs new way of eating.

Much of this explains why so many restaurants and brands are releasing vegan-friendly versions of their popular meals, with brands from McDonalds to Birds Eye cashing in on this new and growing market.

Marnie Lines: Im A Vegan And Its Hard For Me To Be Close To Anyone Whos Not – Pulse Live Kenya

It wasnt always this way: Growing up, I ate meat, but I was never quite sure if I agreed with it in principle. I even went vegetarian a couple of timesonce when I was about 10 and then again when I was 18because I started questioning why it was okay for an animal to have died so that I could eat it.

But both times, I ended up quitting because I figured if everyone else around me was eating meat, then surely it couldn't be that bad. I certainly never thought I'd go vegan .

Then, last fall, Nate and I decided to do some research on veganism after his parents started talking about potentially going fully plant-based.

The more we looked into it, the more we learned about why people go vegan, and we both started to realize the huge impact that eating animals has on our planet.

BusinessInsider USA Images

We began asking ourselves questions like: Is it really moral for someone to raise an animal so that they can kill it and eat it?

From then on, we just couldnt look back. It was like an epiphany. Over just a few days, we used up whatever food we had left in the house. There wasnt much to get rid of, so we practically went vegan overnight.

Going vegan with Nate has made it easier because weve learned to change up what we eat and cook together, and we discuss all of the issues that come along with becoming vegan, including how to talk to people who don't want to listen to the reality of it.

Whats funny is that, more often than not, when someone finds out were vegan, they immediately try and justify eating animal products with an excuse, like, Im trying to eat less meat, or, We only eat fish these days.

I think its sad because it shows that these people feel guilt about eating meat but choose to ignore it. I also question why so many people like to place a hierarchy on the animals we should and shouldnt eat. Why is a cow or pig more worthy than a fish or chicken?

One of the most eye-opening things I like to tell people is something I recently came across on an . It challenges you to replace the word veganism with kind(ness) to animals. This helps people realize how they sound when they give excuses for not being vegan, like Stop forcing kindness to animals on me, and, I could never be kind to animals, I love cheese too much.

Some of our friends have actually gone vegan after we explained to them why its so important to us.

Others just give the same kind of excuses as everybody else. I always remind myself that someone surely must not understand the severity of it all if they choose to not be vegan, but its definitely hard to maintain a relationship with someone who claims to recognize our reality and then still chooses to eat animal products.

I havent cut anybody off after theyve expressed their views against veganism. It definitely creates some distance, thoughas Im sure it would for anyone who finds out their morals don't match up with someone elses.

Its such an important thing to me that, if someone has a completely opposing opinion, its really difficult to ignore that.

If Nate told me he wasnt going to be vegan anymore, first I would check that he was okay, because it would be hard to believe that! Then I would listen to why, because something huge would have to happen for him to go against it, and I would want to understand.

But if his explanation didnt change my mind, I dont think I could stay with him. I strongly believe in veganism, and if you dont, your lifestyle would so completely contrast with my beliefs that it would be very hard to live with that every day.

If I were to go through the dating phase again, I would definitely look to date vegans. That said, I wouldnt rule out someone who's respectful of and open-minded to the whole situationthe goal being to change their mind!

I just dont think I could be in a relationshipactually, I know I couldnt be in a relationshipwith someone who isnt vegan.

Its a way of life, and its recognizing the things in your life that have consequences that impact animals and the environment.

I dont believe people should have more rights than animals.

We share this planet with animals, so I dont believe its okay to play with them like toys, choose when they die, impregnate them, or force them to live so we can take their milk.

We are more than capable of being healthy and happy in the world without doing any of those things.

Blue California Files Patent on the Use of Ergothioneine as a Support for Oxidative Stress Related Health Conditions, including COVID-19 -…

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif and Bedford, Mass., July 14, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Blue California, a science-based, innovative ingredient solution provider, has just filed for a patent on therapeutic uses of the ingredient Ergothioneine. This follows Blue Californias Feb. 2020 patent application reporting the discovery that Ergothioneine inhibits the shortening of telomeres typically associated with oxidative stress. Specifically, it claims that Ergothioneine can mitigate oxidative stress triggering the inflammatory response in many chronic conditions associated with heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Also, in support of other oxidative conditions associated with oxidative stress including COVID-19 as well as other viral diseases.

Blue California has been at the forefront of research and development regarding Ergothioneine using our branded ingredient ErgoActive, stated Dr. Priscilla Samuel, chief science officer at Blue California, We have found through our research that Ergothioneine has tremendous potential to combat oxidative stress and health conditions associated with it.

Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid normally provided to the body from dietary sources such as mushrooms in which it is particularly rich. Humans produce a highly specific transport protein called OCTN1 for Ergothioneine, leading many to speculate about its importance to human health.1 It is a super antioxidant, and renowned scientist Dr. Bruce Ames has even proposed classifying it as a longevity vitamin.2

The possibilities for ErgoActive to be incorporated in an immune health supplement or in a functional food or beverage are immense, commented Katie Ferren, vice president of sales and marketing at Blue California. This opens up the door for support in some exciting health applications.

Blue California is one of the only companies in the United States that has received a no-objection from the FDA to its GRAS notification on Ergothioneine with their branded ingredient ErgoActive. The company exclusively manufactures and distributes ErgoActive for Conagen, a greater Boston area biotechnology company with a large portfolio of products for the food, nutrition, and pharma markets. Vice President of Innovation at Conagen Dr. Casey Lippmeier explains, ErgoActive is an ideal nutrient and we produce it with a proprietary fermentation process. Ours is the only sustainable, commercially available source of Ergothioneine which does not rely on chemical synthesis or extraction from mushrooms.

Blue California and Conagen are eager for next steps. Blue California recently invested in both in vitro and in vivo research of ErgoActive. We will be studying how Ergothioneine supplementation can support various health benefits, including immune health. We also look forward to clinical studies that further test and demonstrate these novel benefits included in our patent application, and in the emerging scientific literature, said Dr. Samuel.

ErgoActive is a registered trademark of Blue California, Inc.

Reduce "Inflammaging" and Improve Your Health – KATU

An emerging concept in medicine is increasingly focused on a rarely recognized yet widely prevalent condition that contributes to an array of diseases called "inflammaging". Greg Eckel, ND, from Nature Cures Clinic, joined us to share how this chronic inflammation, although it may progress slowly, is the root cause of many diseases and poses a significant threat to public health and longevity.

The condition, which often results from an accumulation of health risk factors such as environmental causes, dietary habits, UV exposure, and sleep patterns, is linked to a number of age-related diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

To delay and support healthy aging while protecting the body from illness, medical experts continue to investigate the prominent role of chronic inflammation and its implications on the development of anti-aging therapies.

What can you do to curb "inflammaging"? Eat a Mediterranean-style diet with a plant-based diet focused on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and cold-water fish and plants like soybeans and flax seeds that contain omega-3 fatty acids. Limit or eliminate consumption of foods known to have a pro-inflammatory effect. These include all refined carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and pastries; sugar-sweetened beverages; deep-fried foods; and red meat and processed meats. They are the very same foods with well-established links to obesity (itself a risk factor for inflammation), heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Drink coffee and tea which contain protective polyphenols, among other anti-inflammatory compounds.

Reduce chronic stress. You can do this by getting regular exercise: 30 to 45 minutes of aerobic exercise and 10 to 25 minutes of weight or resistance training at least four to five times a week. Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Practice meditation and yoga.

Arizona universities join forces to contribute to COVID-19 modeling and simulation efforts – ASU Now

July 14, 2020

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the world, the research computing centers at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona Universityand University of Arizonahave united as a team to contribute to the Folding@homeproject. The project utilizes idle computing power to significantly contribute to vital scientific research and therapeutic drug discovery.

The Arizona Research Computing consortium is contributing to this collective effort by using advanced computing resources to perform complex protein modeling computations during brief idle periods on local supercomputers. By running these computations only during downtime, contributions to COVID-19 modeling and simulation efforts can be made through the Folding@home project without impacting everyday research. The Folding@home project provides people around the world the opportunity to make active contributions to a variety of scientific research efforts including COVID-19. Volunteers, or citizen scientists, can download the Folding@home software to their personal computers, allowing simulations of complex scientific processes to run in the background while their personal computers are not in use. The Folding@home project is crowdsourcing at its best, using shared computing power at a massive scale to help solve grand challenges in biomedical research.

In addition to mobilizing citizen scientists across the globe, many institutions and corporations are contributing their own computational resources such as high performance workstations and servers. This distributed computational power is estimated to be 10 times faster than the worlds fastest individual supercomputer.

The onslaught of COVID-19 has raised the visibility of the Folding@home project, highlighting a unique opportunity to fight the virus. The project seeks to understand how proteins, which are large, complex molecules that play an important role in how our bodies function, fold to perform their biological functions. This helps researchers understand diseases that result from protein misfolding and identify novel ways to develop new drug therapies.

How proteins fold or misfold can help us understand what causes diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes. It might also lend insight into viruses such as SARS-CoV-2,the cause of the recent COVID-19pandemic.

Imagine if I told 100 people to fold a pipe cleaner. They are going to fold it in 100 different ways because theres an infinite number of combinations of how to take something that is straight and fold it," said Blake Joyce, assistant director of research computing at the University of Arizona."Thats what viruses and living things do with proteins. They make copies of themselves and fold them up in their own particular way.

Using computational modeling, researchers can explore the mechanics of proteins of the virus and predict every possible way it might fold, or physically change shape.

In biology, shape is function. If you can disrupt that shape, the virus is inactive or cant do its thing. If you disrupt any of the mechanisms that can damage us, you have a cure, or at least something you can treat. And that is what were after. It just takes a lot of computing to come up with every possible way to bend a pipe cleaner, Joyce said.

By running computer simulations, researchers can take the virus and see how it interacts with various compounds or drugs and narrow down which ones might work to interrupt one of the critical mechanisms the virus needs to survive.

Folding@home assigns pieces of a protein simulation to each computer and the results are returned to create an overall simulation. Folding@home computations for COVID-19 research seem to be most productive on the kind of computers found in facilities like Arizonas research computing centers, making their contributions even more valuable.

Volunteers can track their contributions on the Folding@home website and combine their efforts as a team, receiving points for completing work assigned to them and even earning bonus points for work that is more computationally demanding or that might have a greater scientific priority.

The Arizona Research Computing team has risen quickly in the ranks, highlighting the powerful computing capabilities at Arizonas state universities and the effectiveness of regional collaborations. As of mid-June, the Arizona Research Computing team was ranked in the top 100 out of nearly a quarter of a million teams, surpassing Hewlett Packard, Cisco Systems, Apple Computer, Inc., Google, Ireland and Poland, as well as many other university, industry and national or international contributors.

The Folding@home project investigates many research questions that require an enormous amount of computing, but this specific use for COVID-19 provides a unique opportunity, spurring many computing centers to participate in Folding@home for the first time, said Gil Speyer, lead scientific software engineer for Arizona State Universitys research computing center.

Todays biomedical research requires vast amounts of time and computing power. While the Arizona Research Computing team may directly impact COVID-19 research in a small way, the overall impact of the Folding@home project is much broader and will continue to have applications beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Learn the ‘right way’ to make scrambled eggs with this French technique – TODAY

Scrambled eggs are a breakfast staple and everyone seems to have their own particular method for cooking up the fluffiest eggs possible. But the quest for the perfect scrambled eggs may be over, thanks to this French-style recipe by private chef and YouTuber Bruno Albouze.

Unlike traditional scrambled eggs, which are fluffy and form more solid curds, the French style offers a silkier, creamier variation on the breakfast food, Albouze told TODAY.

If (the eggs are) cooked the right way, it changes the texture, the mouthfeel is just incredible, he said. If it's overcooked, you just don't get the same thing. You're pretty much eating chopped omelet.

According to Albouze, the French way of cooking scrambled eggs is the right way.

While Albouze may have mastered this classic technique, he didnt invent it. Chef Brendan Walsh, the dean of the School of Culinary Arts at The Culinary Institute of America, explained that while scrambled eggs have likely been around for thousands of years in places where chickens were first domesticated (like China and Egypt), the French style emerged in the early days of haute or "high cuisine." This term refers to the style of food preparation that blossomed in France during the 16th century, and is still served in many Michelin-starred eateries today.

Eggs are a staple in cooking school," Albouze said. "Cooking eggs is a big thing, because eggs are the trickiest thing to cook. It's composed mostly of water, because the egg white is watery, and the yolk is fat, but it's tricky because it can overcook very fast.

"Scrambled eggs are definitely the item not everyone knows how to cook it properly. And very very few restaurants know how to do it without them being overcooked.

Albouze, 50, has been cooking since he began an apprenticeship at the age of 14 in France, where he learned the art of cooking, baking and pastry making. Growing up, Albouze said he used to walk to nearby farms for fresh, pasture-raised eggs to make omelets and scrambled eggs.

During his career, the chef has worked at the Htel Plaza Athne in Paris under renowned chef Alain Ducasse and as an instructor at the Culinary Institute Lenotre in Houston.

But the chef, who now lives in San Diego, really found his stride in 2009 when he started his own YouTube channel. Albouze now has over 760,000 subscribers and 70 million total video views. One of his most popular videos, a recipe for ratatouille, has garnered over 10 million views.

In one of his latest cooking demos, Albouze shared his favorite method for cooking scrambled eggs in the French style. In 2015, he showcased how to cook French-style eggs in water bath. Both methods require constant stirring and movement over low heat to achieve the desired creamy texture.

One method Albouze demonstrated uses a nonstick pan, while the other uses a water bath, which is known as a "bain marie in French and culinary terms.

Walsh added that the French way is a technique where "slow and low, patience and respect" result in the creamiest eggs possible. It is a preparation method that is taught at the CIA, although he said he rarely sees the technique used in America outside of fancier hotels and restaurants.

"It is important in egg cookery to create soft and supple textures," Walsh said via email. "Too high of heat will dry out the protein and take away the supple creaminess that the protein can provide.

Cooking is about ingredients, Albouze added. 80% (is) about the ingredients, 10% skills and 10% time. So, it tells us you don't have to be skilled, just if you understand that ingredients are the most important part of cooking.

.

For this reason, he recommends using pasture-raised eggs, which means that the egg-laying hens are allowed to spend plenty of time outside, and feed on grass, bugs or worms instead of a corn- or soy-based diet.

These days, if the egg aisle at your supermarket seems a little empty, it might not be a bad idea to take a road trip out to a local farm, pick up some fresh eggs and try out this fun technique at home.

Said Walsh, Crispy toast and creamy French-style eggs are just the sexiest start to the chefs morning."

This recipes serves two people and takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

Said Albouze, There's no question that the most important factor when cooking eggs is the cooking technique itself. In the case of scrambled eggs, that means using gentle heat and taking the eggs off the flame a little early to account for carryover cooking.

1. Crack eggs into a bowl and set aside. Do not whisk the eggs. Set flame to medium and allow heat to gently warm the pan prior to adding any fat.

2. Add the olive oil and butter to the pan. Let melt slightly before adding the unbeaten eggs. With a whisk or a rubber spatula, poke the egg yolks and cook slowly on medium heat while constantly stirring, folding and shaking the pan.

3. Continue to cook and move the eggs as they start to scramble. They should yield a soft, delicate and creamy texture in about 5 minutes. As the eggs start to come together, turn off the heat and continue to stir the eggs.

4. To stop the cooking process, whisk in a dash of milk or cream. Season the eggs with salt and a few grinds of pepper before youre ready to serve. Salting the eggs too early may make your eggs watery.

5. If desired, serve the scrambled eggs with some fresh herbs, such as dill or chives. Eggs also pair remarkably well with caviar, salmon roe, truffle, cured salmon or bacon. Either way, these eggs should be served immediately.

Bon apptit!
