When the robber hit the Sovereign Bank in July and September of last year, he entered the bank with his face covered and wearing a sweat shirt turned inside out. He dropped the sweatshirt in a wooded area near the bank after the September robbery. That sweatshirt was recovered by police and sent to the Pennsylvania State Police Laboratory for DNA testing. On January 3rd, 2012, the same suspect robbed the Peoples Bank on Cape Horn Road in Windsor Township. The robber again had his face covered and wore a sweatshirt. The actor demanded money and fled the bank in a maroon Kia. A York Area Regional Police officer observed a car matching the suspect vehicle in Yoe Borough and pulled it over. The car was driven by Benjamin Pohl. When the officer did not find any evidence that linked Pohl to the bank robbery he was released. In the coming months, investigators focused on Pohl. The Sovereign Bank was robbed for the third time on June 14th, 2012. It was the same robber, same modus operandi- he again covered his face and wore a sweatshirt turned inside out. This time he jumped over the teller counter, but fled the bank before obtaining any cash. The suspect was seen entering a gold Honda sedan. Investigators knew Pohl owned a gold Honda sedan and responded to his Red Lion Borough address. This time, investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence and interviewed Pohl. They took a DNA sample and sent it to the Pennsylvania State Police DNA laboratory for comparison with the DNA collected from the gray sweatshirt. The DNA proved to be a match. Pohl subsequently admitted to committing five bank robberies.

A new DNA test has been developed to allow retailers to authenticate Aberdeen-Angus beef, in a bid to protect its name and heritage.

"If you get a bright red chunk of beef, it may well look nice in a polystyrene tray, but it certainly won't eat very well," says Aberdeen-Angus breeder Geordie Soutar.

"But if you get one with a little bit of white fat round it and speckles through it, it will cook and eat sublimely."

The original Aberdeen-Angus was first bred in the early 19th Century in northeast Scotland, but now the cattle are bred in South America, Canada, the US and South Africa.

Now most Aberdeen-Angus cattle are cross-bred, and the amount of pure-bred Aberdeen-Angus beef on the market "is very very small", says Ron McHattie, chief executive of The Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society.

This means breeders are keen to ensure no impostors lacking in fat and flavour sully Aberdeen Angus beef's reputation, because premium beef demands premium prices.

Waitrose sells Aberdeen-Angus beef sirloin steak for 24 per kg (6.00 per 250g pack), while the MacDonalds Brothers butchers in Perthshire, which is supplied by Geordie Soutar, charges 23.08 per kg of Aberdeen-Angus sirloin steak.

However cut-price chain Aldi recently introduced a range of "certified" Aberdeen-Angus beef, setting the cost of sirloin steak at 17.58 per kg (3.99 per 227g pack).

To ensure that such beef is legitimate, a DNA test has been developed for The Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society by IdentiGEN, a company that provides DNA technology to the food industry.

DNA center stage in killing of 80-year-old East Little Havana woman

The trial to solve the December 2000 murder of an 80-year-old woman will be decided by blood.

Victor Guzman, 39, is charged with the first degree murder of Severina Dolores Fernandez a killing that was as mysterious as it was gruesome at the time of the crime. The only evidence connecting Guzman to the murder is a DNA sample taken from the scene.

In his opening statement on Tuesday, state prosecutor Scott Warfman described the scene in Fernandezs otherwise tidy apartment in East Little Havana.

Police found her body in a puddle of blood on her bed, naked, with 58 stab wounds. Blood splatters stained the armrest of a chair, a couch cushion, the dresser, the window and the sink.

The trial began on an emotional note, with the prosecution calling Isabel Reyes, the victims niece.

Reyes spoke affectionately of her aunt and the routine that she kept every afternoon. Tia Lola, as Reyes called her, would go outside every day at 5 p.m. to get her newspaper, come upstairs, fold the paper to the crossword and get a bowl of sherbet to eat while she solved it.

When police found her body on the afternoon of Dec. 9, 2000, the tub of sherbet was still melting on the counter. Warfman showed the jury two graphic photos of the crime scene, which he said looks like finger-painting, theres so much blood.

But not all of it came from the victim.

Fernandez managed to fight off her attacker enough to draw his blood, leaving behind DNA evidence that didnt match existing police records.

Some two years later, the same DNA turned up in the rape of a 12-year-old girl in Miami Beach, but police had no idea whose DNA marked both heinous crimes.

ST. LOUIS, MO, September 4, 2012 The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center will be hosting its 14th annual Fall Symposium from Wednesday, September 26th Friday, September 28th, 2012. This year's symposium will feature lectures by influential experts from across the world who will present on a wide range of topics on cutting-edge science. This year's theme will focus on synthetic and systems level explorations in biology that are establishing fundamental emergent properties of complex biological systems.

"The annual symposium is an opportunity for a diverse group of scientists from private research, industry and universities to interact and learn from state-of-the-art talks on focused topics within biology," said Doug Allen, USDA Research Scientist, Assistant Member, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center who is organizing this year's event. 'Virtual' classrooms enhance staff training at Spire Healthcare

Northampton, UK - The implementation of HORIBA Medical UK's online training programme for its haematology analysers has proven to be a great success at Spire Pathology Services. HORIBA Medical's ABX Pentra 80 haematology analysers have played a major role in helping Spire Pathology Services to process the more than 1.8 million samples that are tested yearly in its 18 laboratories for hospitals within the Spire Healthcare Group (the second largest group of private hospitals across the UK), as well as external customers, including the independent and NHS sectors.

HORIBA Medical's ABX Pentra 80 haematology analysers fulfil all the requirements of Spire's busy pathology labs, however one of the biggest challenges lies in ensuring all appropriate personnel are fully trained and certified to use the analysers. Consequently, Spire adopted the HORIBA e-Learning Portal (HeLP) as a complement to its on-site and classroom-based learning. As an administrator of online learning at Spire Pathology Services, Linda Joyce is notified by email when personnel in the countrywide pathology laboratories have successfully completed the course, making it easy for her to keep up-to-date with who has received the training.

According to Linda Joyce, one of the key benefits of the e-learning programme was the flexibility to adapt it to the requirements of the pathology laboratories. "HORIBA Medical were very good at working with us to adapt the online tool to our needs. I worked personally with them to set up the package, where certain aspects were changed to tailor the learning programme to the requirements of our personnel. For example, one of the areas we needed more tuition on was for a statistical measurement of population means: the package was modified to include this."

HeLP fully supports a multi-disciplinary use of the HORIBA haematology analysers. For example, the online tool ensures that non-biomedical scientists (BMS) can be trained to the appropriate level necessary to use the blood analyser. "HORIBA Medical have even designed a haematology course for beginners to bring medical laboratory assistants and biochemists unfamiliar with blood work, up to speed," added Linda Joyce. "We also have a two-tiered learning programme for the analysers; Level 1 is for basic users such as non BMS staff and Level 2 is more advanced, for BMS staff. This means learning is adapted specifically to the users' needs."

Spire Pathology Services' professional service dictates that all personnel must hold certificates of competency in order to use the haematology analysers. Upon the successful completion of the e-learning courses, certificates are produced which carry a Continued Professional Development (CPD) code accredited from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. Frontline health staff’s job cut warning

PATHOLOGY Queensland is preparing to shed staff as part of $25 million in budget cuts, and employees have been warned "being frontline offers no protection".

An email from Pathology Queensland's principal chief scientist for haematology, Dominic Burns, outlines government plans for the organisation to become "more efficient with less resources".

"There is a head count imperative as well as a budget imperative," he says in the email.

"The budget would be difficult to achieve without reducing staff."

The email, obtained by The Courier-Mail, says if a role is no longer required, human resources will work with affected employees on the possibility of placement in another position.

A video conference with staff is planned for later this week, when further details are expected to be revealed.

Mr Burns' email refers staff to Queensland Health's Employee Assistance Program, a free counselling service, given "there may be considerable stress and uncertainty for everyone".

He said it was possible some services may be devolved to the 17 hospital and health service districts.

Public health expert Mike Daube, professor of health policy at Curtin University in Western Australia, said yesterday that devolution of services to the districts could be "expensive or a recipe for disaster - possibly both".

"There is no way that 17 boards will have the expertise to address all the issues and problems they will face," Professor Daube said.

A child's normal development and physical growth are crucial, particularly during infancy and up to the time he or she is around seven years old.

Hence, healthy nutrition is vital for a growing child and parents should ensure that they play an instrumental role in this aspect.

A recent study indicates that in the bid to ensure that their child gets all the essential nutrients, young mothers resort to using formula milk or growing up milk (GUM) for meeting the nutritional needs of their infants.

STUDY INDICATORS

The Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), in collaboration with Abbott Nutrition, carried out a recent study, which included 300 mothers who have children below three years of age.

The study shows that several factors influence a young mothers' choice of GUM.

New long-term antimicrobial catheter developed

A novel antimicrobial catheter that remains infection-free for up to twelve weeks could dramatically improve the lives of long-term catheter users. The scientists who have developed the new technology are presenting their work at the Society for General Microbiology's Autumn Conference at the University of Warwick.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham have developed a catheter that can kill most urinary bacteria, including most strains of Proteus bacteria the most common cause of catheter infections. Importantly the antimicrobial catheter retains its activity for between six to twelve weeks, making it suitable for long-term use, unlike existing commercial anti-infection catheters.

Urinary catheters are commonly used to manage incontinence in the elderly or individuals who have suffered long-term spinal cord injury. All catheters become infected after a couple of weeks and Proteus bacteria are responsible for up to 40% of these infections. The bacterium sticks to catheter surfaces and breaks down urea, causing the pH of urine to rise. This causes deposits of mineral crystals in the catheter which blocks it, preventing drainage. If unnoticed, catheter blockage can lead to kidney and bloodstream infections, which ultimately may result in potentially fatal septic shock.

This new antimicrobial catheter has significant advantages over existing solutions, explained Dr Roger Bayston who is leading the development. "Commercial 'anti-infection' catheters are active for only a few days and are not suitable for long-term use. There is an urgent need for an antimicrobial catheter that is suitable for long-term use. Our catheter uses patented technology that does not involve any coatings which extends its antimicrobial activity. The process involves introducing antimicrobial molecules into the catheter material after manufacture, so that they are evenly distributed throughout it, yet can move through the material to replenish those washed away from the surface."

There are 100 million catheter users worldwide whose lives can be severely disrupted by illness from repeat infections and side-effects from antibiotics. "The catheter technology has proven benefit in other medical settings and has the potential to be the solution to recurrent infections in long-term catheter users, which will improve quality of life of these individuals. In addition, reducing the need to frequently change catheters and treat infections would represent huge financial savings to the NHS," explained Dr Bayston.

Dining services adds nutrition facts to daily menu

With nutrition facts now available for Dining Services daily menus a health initiative thats new this semester its easier than ever for campus diners to choose which food items to stock up on and which to leave behind.

Before classes began, Kent State executive chefs compiled nutrition facts for the menus that change daily at Eastway Cafe and Kent Market, and the facts are listed at those locations, said Dining Services director Richard Roldan. Nutrition facts for more locations and items that are served every day are available on the Dining Services website.

We talk about nutrition and people wanting to understand what they eat, Roldan said. So for us it was important that everything was out there and the information was available.

On average, students gain three to 10 pounds during their first two years of college, and most students gain that weight during their first semester, said nutrition outreach coordinator Tanya Falcone.

There is a misconception that eating healthy on campus is impossible, she said, but with the facts, students have more choices than they might realize.

1. Keep meals at a maximum of 500 calories and 15 grams of fat. This is based on the 2,000 calorie diet that plans for three meals and two smaller snacks.

2. Split meals that have larger amounts of calories and grams of fat with a friend or eat half and save the rest for later.

3. Look for items that are grilled instead of fried.

4. Eat healthy foods during a craving. For example, instead of eating three pieces of pizza, have one piece and a salad.

The way that the visual centers of men and women's brains works is different, finds new research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Biology of Sex Differences. Men have greater sensitivity to fine detail and rapidly moving stimuli, but women are better at discriminating between colors.

In the brain there are high concentrations of male sex hormone (androgen) receptors throughout cerebral cortex, especially in the visual cortex which is responsible for processing images. Androgens are also responsible for controlling the development of neurons in the visual cortex during embryogenesis, meaning that males have 25% more of these neurons than females.

Researchers from Brooklyn and Hunter Colleges of the City University of New York compared the vision of men and women aged over 16 from both college and high school, including students and staff. All volunteers were required to have normal color vision and 20/20 sight (or 20/20 when corrected by glasses or contact lenses).

When the volunteers were required to describe colors shown to them across the visual spectrum it became obvious that the color vision of men was shifted, and that they required a slightly longer wavelength to experience the same hue as the women. The males also had a broader range in the center of the spectrum where they were less able to discriminate between colors.

An image of light and dark bars was used to measure contrast-sensitivity functions (CSF) of vision; the bars were either horizontal or vertical and volunteers had to choose which one they saw. In each image, when the light and dark bars were alternated the image appeared to flicker.

By varying how rapidly the bars alternated or how close together they were, the team found that at moderate rates of image change, observers lost sensitivity for close together bars, and gained sensitivity when the bars were farther apart. However when the image change was faster both sexes were less able to resolve the images over all bar widths. Overall the men were better able to resolve more rapidly changing images that were closer together than the women.

Prof Israel Abramov, who led this study commented, "As with other senses, such as hearing and the olfactory system, there are marked sex differences in vision between men and women. The elements of vision we measured are determined by inputs from specific sets of thalamic neurons into the primary visual cortex. We suggest that, since these neurons are guided by the cortex during embryogenesis, that testosterone plays a major role, somehow leading to different connectivity between males and females. The evolutionary driving force between these differences is less clear."

GSW, Chehaw collaborate in conservation biology

Albany Chehaw Parks Education and Animal Care Department and Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Biology Department are to begin a new partnership in conservation biology. For the first time during fall semester 2012, the University and the Zoo will collaborate in teaching a class in Zoo Animal Care and Maintenance.

It has always been a dream of mine to see Chehaw used to engage students as a learning institution, said Doug Porter, executive director for Chehaw. This new and exciting partnership will not only be beneficial to the Park and the University but to the greater community of Southwest Georgia.

The class will be a hands-on practice-oriented course in which more time will be spent working at the Zoo than sitting in the classroom. The goals of the course are to introduce students with a passion for animal husbandry and conservation to a career in zoo keeping. The course will cover the basics in zoo keeping, including, animal handling techniques, management, nutrition, breeding, behavior enrichment, exhibit design, zoo administration and public education of the major animal groups.

I am looking forward to getting this program off of the ground, shared Ian Brown, Ph.D., associate professor of biology at GSW. The chance to have our students working in this field as undergraduates will give them the experience that they will need when applying for future jobs in conservation.

The relationship between Chehaw Park and GSW has slowly gained momentum over the past eight years. As early as 2004, biology students began visiting the zoo to conduct behavioral observation laboratories on various animals such as the colobus monkey, flamingos, lemurs, meerkats and cheetahs. In recent years the zoo has used these student assignments as supporting material in grant applications. To date, three GSW biology majors have been hired as summer program instructors and another three have volunteered as zoo keeper assistants.

Zoo Animal Care and Maintenance students will spend their classroom time studying the theoretical aspects of the husbandry and welfare of non-domesticated animals in captivity and the logistics of zoological and conservation park operation. The overall focus in the classroom will be on the role that modern zoos must play in habitat and species conservation.

At Chehaw, the students will work alongside zoo professionals to learn the practical details of this important field. They also will be spending time with some of the Zoos leadership team, the Zoo director, the Zoo curator and Education coordinator to gain valuable insight into the inner workings of an AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) -accredited Zoo.

This first class is being made possible through the willingness of university faculty and zoo personnel to take on additional workloads. In the future it is hoped that this initial class will grow into an entire zoo technology program with an emphasis in threatened species conservation.

The course instructors realize that modern Zoological and Conservation Parks and Aquariums utilize cutting edge technology to care for and breed many hundreds of animal species. Therefore most parks now require that their staff hold the minimum of a two-year and preferably a four-year degree in biology, animal husbandry or related field.

These new demands have opened up unique university-zoo collaboration opportunities to provide the requisite qualified zoo animal care personnel. Furthermore, in the near future a greater demand for zoos and aquariums is predicted, as their roles in animal conservation become increasingly more valuable.
