About the Exhibit: Stanley Matrunick (1906 – 1995) was a medium and Spiritualist minister who channeled portraits of Ascended Masters, guardians and loved ones from the other side. With the help of spirit guides, Rev. Stanley began creating spirit art in 1954 at the White Lily Chapel in Ashley, Ohio. He was then led to travel across the United States for 40 years doing portraits and readings. His work was often featured on television, radio and in print. The art presented here is from the private collection of Ron Nagy, historian of Lily Dale, NY, the world’s largest Spiritualist community. Also included are materials about Stanley Matrunick provided by his former student, Sakina Blue –Star of Sedona, Arizona.
About the Curator: Shannon Taggart is a photographer based in Brooklyn and a member of Observatory. Since 2001, she has been working on a project about Modern Spiritualism. Her images have appeared in publications including Blind Spot, Tokion, TIME and The New York Times Magazine. Why Ectoplasm? - Harry Houdini famously wondered this in his scathing critique of Spiritualism. Since it’s first appearances in Victorian era séance rooms, this mysterious substance has continued to seduce, disgust and intrigue believers and skeptics alike. This presentation will consider some of the complicated situations in which ectoplasm played a provocative role including the work of Baron von Schrenck-Notzing, the documentation of the Goligher Circle and the infamous case of Margery the Medium. Shannon Taggart’s images that address the current pursuit of ectoplasm within Modern Spiritualism will also be discussed. This lecture is part of a series that seeks to explore the intrinsic connection between Spiritualism and Photography.
Shannon Taggart is a photographer based in Brooklyn and a member of Observatory. Her images have appeared in various publications including Blind Spot, Tokion, TIME and The New York Times Magazine. Astronomers, religious leaders, and members of the lay public had speculated about the possibility of life on other planets for hundreds of years before the first “proof” appeared, in May 1905, in the first successful photographs of Mars. Newspapers and magazines swiftly published reproductions of the photographs, made by the amateur planetary astronomer and wealthy businessman Percival Lowell, with accompanying descriptions of the “canals” of Mars and its imagined inhabitants. This illustrated talk shows how the intersection of science with new forms of observation and journalistic image display in the late 19th and early 20th century galvanized public interest in Mars, and how “Mars Mania” intersected and interacted with key trends and figures in art, journalism, spiritualism, astronomy, evolutionary science, and politics during a period that, noted the British writer H.G. Wells, was fascinated by the idea that “There are certain features in which [Martians] are likely to resemble us.”
Jennifer Tucker is a historian of science and technology specializing in the study of visual representation, gender, science, and popular knowledge in Victorian England. She is the author of Nature Exposed: Photography as Eyewitness in Victorian Science (2006) and editor of a special issue of History and Theory on “Photography and Historical Interpretation, “ as well as articles about the visual representation of science and technology in Victorian England. She is finishing a book about the photos and other visual representations that circulated across the wide social spectrum of Victorian society during the most famous legal case of imposture in modern Britain.

This is a souvenir of a visit to a Coney Island Bowery amusement called Darkness and Dawn. It was a Cyclorama, and had been created for an exposition in Omaha, Nebraska in 1898. It was brought to the Coney Island Bowery at the turn of the century. The souvenir is card stock, in the shape of a coffin, and has a skull and crossbones illustration at top. It also has a quote from "The Devil." The same image and text is printed on both sides (shown). The attraction on the Bowery was destroyed by fire in 1903, and was rebuilt for Luna Park several years later.

In her many projects, ranging from photography to curation to writing, New York based Joanna Ebenstein utilizes a combination of art and scholarship to tease out the ways in which the pre-rational roots of modernity are sublimated into ostensibly "purely rational" cultural activities such as science and medicine.Much of her work uses this approach to investigate historical moments or artifacts where art and science, death and beauty, spectacle and edification, faith and empiricism meet in ways that trouble contemporary categorical expectations.In the exhibition "Ecstatic Raptures and Immaculate Corpses" Ebenstein turns this approach to an examination of the uncanny and powerfully resonant representations of the dead, martyred, and anatomized body in Italy, monuments to humankind's quest to eternally preserve the corporeal body and defeat death in arenas sacred and profane.The artifacts she finds in both the churches, charnel houeses and anatomical museums of Italy complicate our ideas of the proper roles of--and divisions between--science and religion, death and beauty; art and science; eros and thanatos; sacred and profane; body and soul.

For the past 5 years, she has traveled the world, seeking out the most curious, obscure and macabre collections, public and private, front stage and back, and sharing her findings via her the Morbid Anatomy Blog as well as a variety of exhibitions including Anatomical Theatre, a photographic survey of artifacts of great medical museums of the Western World; The Secret Museum, a photographic exhibition exploring the poetics of collections private and public, front stage and back.

Photographer Marc McAndrews spent five years living in and photographing "the landscape, the spaces, the mundane, the untouchables and staff members" of every legal brothel in the state of Nevada. One hundred and eighty nine of these stunning photographs, ranging in content from the prosaic to the sensational, are featured in his new book Nevada Rose: Inside the American Brothel.
Tonight, we invite you to join Mr. McAndrews for an illustrated lecture in which he will show many of these fabulous photographs, and share the stories behind them: what was it like living and working inside the Nevada brothels, how did he get access for the first time and what were his interactions like with the women, owners and customers. Books will also be available for sale and signing.
Marc McAndrews grew up in Reading, Pa. He received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1998. Marc’s love of photography began when he received his first Polaroid camera from his Grandmother when he was 5 years old and he immediately began using it as a means of distraction during his family’s long drives on vacation every year. Photography and long car rides would become themes in Marc’s life. After returning from living and working in Europe, Marc began traveling the country, concentrating on photographing and documenting American culture. It was through these travels that Marc began his book project, Nevada Rose which captures the places and personalities of Nevada’s legal brothels. His work has been seen in the New York Times and magazines such as Interview, Time, Stern, D Magazine, The Observer, Inc., Exit, Fortune Small Business, Marie Claire South Africa and many others. Marc was a recipient of the Magenta Art Foundation’s 2006 “Flash Forward” award. Nevada Rose was nominated for the 2009 NY Photo Awards and was an official selection for the 2009 and 2011 Lucie Awards. His series “JROTC” and “Girl Scouts” (part of the larger “American Youth” project) were official selections for the 2009 and 2011 Lucie Awards. Longevity Global Inc. Now Launches New LDG Series Of Modern And Powerful Diesel Generators
LOS ANGELES -- Calories. Nutrients. Serving size. How about produced with genetic engineering?
California voters will soon decide whether to require certain raw and processed foods to carry such a label.
In a closely watched test of consumers appetite for genetically modified foods, the special label is being pushed by organic farmers and advocates who are concerned about what people eat even though the federal government and many scientists contend such foods are safe.
More than just food packaging is at stake. The outcome could reverberate through American agriculture, which has long tinkered with the genes of plants to reduce disease, ward off insects and boost the food supply.
International food and chemical conglomerates, including Monsanto Co. and DuPont Co., have contributed about $35 million to defeat Proposition 37 on the November ballot. It also would ban labeling or advertising genetically altered food as natural. Its supporters have raised just about one-tenth of that amount.
If voters approve the initiative, California would become the first state to require disclosure of a broad range of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Food makers would have to add a label or reformulate their products to avoid it. Supermarkets would be charged with making sure their shelves are stocked with correctly labeled items.
Genetically altered plants grown from seeds engineered in the laboratory have been a mainstay for more than a decade. Much of the corn, soybean, sugar beets and cotton cultivated in the United States today have been tweaked to resist pesticides or insects. Most of the biotech crops are used for animal feed or as ingredients in processed foods including cookies, cereal, potato chips and salad dressing.
Proponents say explicit labeling gives consumers information about how a product is made and allows them to decide whether to choose foods with genetically modified ingredients.
Theyre fed up. They want to know whats in their food, said Stacy Malkan, spokeswoman for the California Right to Know campaign.
Agribusiness, farmers and retailers oppose the initiative, claiming it would lead to higher grocery bills and leave the state open to frivolous lawsuits. Kathy Fairbanks, spokeswoman for the No on 37 campaign, said labels would be interpreted as a warning and confuse shoppers.

California to vote on 'genetically modified' labels
SAGINAW, MI Kenneth T. Bluew's DNA matches the DNA from at least 26 bloodstains examined in connection with the apparent suicide of the woman who was eight months pregnant with his son, an expert testified today.
Lisa Ramos, who works for the Michigan State Police, testified during Bluew's trial today regarding the results of the tests she conducted on numerous bloodstain samples sent to her from Valerie Bowman at the state police's Bridgeport crime lab.
Bluew, 37, is charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the Aug. 30, 2011, death of Webb at North Outer and Hack in Buena Vista Township. Webb, 32, planned to name her son Braxton; the fetus' DNA showed that "it was consistent" that Bluew was the father, Ramos said.
Ramos testified that Bluew was the only DNA donor of bloodstains found on Webb's clothing, in and on the outside of Webb's Pontiac Aztek, on his uniform, and in his police cruiser.
Among those stains included those from the inside portion of a piece of a disposable examination glove found in Webb's clothes, Ramos said. She also tested the outside of the piece of the glove, and neither Bluew nor Webb could be excluded as being a donor, Ramos testified.
The stains to which Bluew was the only donor, or single source, also included a swab under the fingernails of Webb's left hand; stains on Webb's shirt, pants and bra; and one of Webb's flip flops, found in a culvert of the ditch Webb was hanging into. Last week's testimony from Bluew's fellow officers who were on scene showed that the flip flops were not touched until crime lab personnel arrived hours later.
Ramos also testified that Bluew was the only donor of a stain on the rear door of the Aztek's passenger side, which Bowman this week testified had a ridge structure in it like a fingerprint.
Bluew also was the single source of at least seven stains found inside the Aztek; all nine stains on Bluew's duty pants, the ones he told state police Detective Sgts. Allan Ogg and Jason Teddy were oldand not worn that night; a stain on the CE portion of the POLICE lettering on Bluew's tactical vest; a stain on the sleeve of his T-shirt, found with the old duty pants; and the interior of the driver's side door, the steering wheel, and the handheld police radio microphone of his police cruiser.
Ramos testified that Webb was the only DNA donor of a blood stain found on a driveway leading to the Buena Vista Township Wastewater Treatment Plant, about 270 feet by foot from where Webb's vehicle was found and next to a silver charm that appears to have come from Webb's necklace. Ramos testified that the swabs taken from under Webb's fingernails both contained two donors: Webb and a male source. Ramos testified that Bluew's DNA matched the male donor of the left hand and cannot be excluded as being the source of the right hand.

GERONIMO, Okla_Like many other senior citizen nutrition sites in Southwest Oklahoma, the center in Geronimo is in danger of closing down.
The Delta Nutrition Program, which oversees Geronimo's site, announced last month that their center and several others were in danger of closing because of federal budget cuts. Geronimo's center sees about 18 seniors per day, which is not enough to keep it open. But some of the center's employees and the seniors who visit say they're still fighting for it.
Geronimo's nutrition center has been feeding local seniors since 1988. It's managed to stay open from grants and a $2 daily admission fee for visiting seniors. That $2 is all most of them can afford. The center just received a $3,800 ASCOG grant for the 2012-2013 fiscal year but center officials say they're worried that it may be their last.
Dorothy McNabb has been coming to Geronimo's nutrition center for the past two years. She said the women have become a part of her family. So when she heard that a place she calls her second home may close, she was worried.
"I was so upset, I just can't imagine us not having a place to go everyday. We would miss so much. The whole community, they were very saddened."
She said the center offers seniors a way to stay active and socialize. Not to mention, gain access to nutritious foods.
"It is not like I cook at home. Where, we would just have leftovers and leftovers of the same thing. You get a variety of food each day."
Site manager Joanie Sutton said the reason this center is on the chopping block is because not enough seniors are coming in each day. At least, not when compared to larger cities like Lawton but she said those figures are skewed.
"We are a smaller community. So my numbers are going to be low. Some of them still work over 60, so they can't make it up here from 8 to 1."
Sutton said that in the last year, at least five more seniors have been coming in per day. Time will tell if that increase will be enough to stay open. But for the Geronimo community, this center means everything.

TULIA, TEXAS -- DNA evidence helped to link a man to the murder of an elderly Tulia woman in 2011.
According to Tulia Police, the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab linked evidence from a sexual assault investigation in Willmar, Minn., to the murder of Imogene Harris.
An arrest warrant was issued for Esequiel Gomez, Jr., for the offense of Capital Murder.
Imogene Wilmoth Harris, 84 was found deceased in a Tulia residence in August 2011 by a family member. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma, police said.
Authorities said Gomez had been living in Texas but was extradited to Minnesota for aggravated sexual assault. Additionally, police said Gomez was linked to an assault of an elderly person in Hico, Texas, in 2008.

Every political philosophy has to begin with a theory of human nature, wrote Harvard evolutionary biologist Richard Lewontin in his bookBiology as Ideology. Thomas Hobbes, for example, believed that humans in a state of nature, or what today we would call hunter-gatherer societies, lived a life that was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short in which there existed a warre of all against all. This led him to conclude, as many apologists for dictatorship have since, that a stable society required a single leader in order to control the rapacious violence that was inherent to human nature. Building off of this, advocates of state communism, such as Vladimir Lenin or Josef Stalin, believed that each of us was borntabula rasa, with a blank slate, and that human nature could be molded in the interests of those in power.
Ever sinceAtlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand has been gaining prominence among American conservatives as the leading voice for the political philosophy of laissez-faire capitalism, or the idea that private business should be unconstrained and that governments only concern should be protecting individual property rights. AsI wrote this week inSlatewith my piece Ayn Rand vs. the Pygmies,the Russian-born author believed that rational selfishness was the ultimate expression of human nature.
Collectivism, Rand wrote inCapitalism: The Unknown Idealis the tribal premise of primordial savages who, unable to conceive of individual rights, believed that the tribe is a supreme, omnipotent ruler, that it owns the lives of its members and may sacrifice them whenever it pleases. An objective understanding of mans nature and mans relationship to existence should inoculate society from the disease of altruistic morality and economic redistribution. Therefore, one must begin by identifying mans nature, i.e., those essential characteristics which distinguish him from all other living species.
As Rand further detailed in her bookThe Virtue of Selfishness, moral values are genetically dependent on the way living entities exist and function. Because each individual organism is primarily concerned with its own life, she therefore concludes that selfishness is the correct moral value of life. Its life is the standard of value directing its actions, Rand wrote, it acts automatically to further its life and cannot act for its own destruction. Because of this Rand insists altruism is a pernicious lie that is directly contrary to biological reality. Therefore, the only way to build a good society was to allow human nature, like capitalism, to remain unfettered by the meddling of a false ideology.
Altruism is incompatible with freedom, with capitalism and with individual rights, she continued. One cannot combine the pursuit of happiness with the moral status of a sacrificial animal. She concludes that this conflict between human nature and the irrational morality of altruism is a lethal tension that tears society apart. Her mission was to free humanity from this conflict. Like Marx, she believed that her correct interpretation of how society should be organized would be the ultimate expression of human freedom.
As I demonstrated in mySlatepiece,Ayn Rand was wrong about altruism. But how she arrived at this conclusion is revealing both because it shows her thought process and offers a warning to those who would construct their own political philosophy on the back of an assumed human nature. Ironically, given her strong opposition to monarchy and state communism, Rand based her interpretation of human nature on the same premises as these previous systems while adding a crude evolutionary argument in order to connect them.
Rand assumed, as Hobbes did, that without a centralized authority human life would erupt into a chaos of violence. Warfarepermanent warfareis the hallmark of tribal existence, she wrote inThe Return of the Primitive. Tribes subsist on the edge of starvation, at the mercy of natural disasters, less successfully than herds of animals. This, she reasoned, is why altruism is so pervasive among indigenous societies; prehistoric groups needed the tribe for protection. She argued that altruism is perpetuated as an ideal among the poor in modern societies for the same reason.
It is only the inferior men that have collective instinctsbecause they need them, Rand wrote in ajournal entrydated February 22, 1937. This kind of primitive altruism doesnt exist in superior men, Rand continued, because social instincts serve merely as the weapon and protection of the inferior. She later expands on this idea by stating, We may still be in evolution, as a species, and living side by side with some missing links.

Harlem resident and mother, Barbara Biscaino, presented a live cooking demonstration today preparing her favorite healthy dish -- corn and cucumber salad -- in front of a live audience that included Manhattan Deputy Borough President Rose Pierre-Louis; JoAnne Page, President and CEO of The Fortune Society; Sharon Dalton, Vice President of the Aetna Foundation; and Harlem families. In December 2011, with a $25,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation and a supplemental grant from the New York State Department of Healths Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP), The Fortune Society launched the Food & Nutrition Program for Families & Children. Before enrolling in this program, my daughter and I would eat fast food three or four days a week, putting our health on the back burner. Now, our entire outlook on healthy eating has changed.
