The narcotics industry filled the void left by deindustrialization turning the city #39;s former factory district into an open-air narcotics supermarket staffed at the entry level by young Puerto Ricans serving primarily poor white injectors. A dynamic of embodied primitive accumulation kills, maims, disables or incarcerates most of this industry #39;s entry-level employees and customers. Artificially high profit margins depend on coercion: 1) An inelastic demand for addictive products; 2) The scarcity effects of zero-tolerance policing; and 3) the brutality of wannabe monopoly drug lords in the absence of state-sanctioned legal recourse. Giovanni Maciocia, whose Chinese name Ma Wan Li means "horse of ten-thousand miles", has been teaching acupuncture and Chinese medicine internationally since 1974 and is one of the most highly respected practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Europe. Originally from a medical family in Italy, he trained in England at the International College of Oriental medicine graduating in acupuncture. He attended postgraduate acupuncture courses in China at the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine where he gained both valuable knowledge and clinical experience. In 1996, Giovanni Maciocia was appointed Visiting Professor of the Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a foremost teaching institution in China. Because Giovanni reads Chinese, he has unique access to both old as well as modern Chinese medicine textbooks. While firmly rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, he innovatively adapts Eastern theories to Western conditions including the aetiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of ME (Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome) a new disease, not documented in Chinese literature.
