Gov’t Launches Kids’ Nutrition Program

CAGAYAN DE ORO (PIA) - To address malnutrition in the country and aid typhoon "Sendong" victims in this city, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) launched its Malnutrition Reduction Program through the DOST Pinoy (Package for the Improvement of Nutrition of Young Children) at a hotel here the other day.

This project will look into and take care of malnourished children in various relocation sites, said Region-10 office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-10) Director Alfonso Alamban.

While the FNRI developed technologies to address such issue.

The DOST Pinoy is a package of nutrition intervention to reduce the prevalence of underweight among six- to 35-month-old children through 120-days feeding with FNRI-developed complementary food blends and snack curls.

The blends include rice-mongo based commodities rich in energy and protein such as rice-mongo instant blend, rice-mongo-sesame ready-to-cook blend, and rice-mongo curls, among others.

These food blends are also Multi-Nutrient Growth Mix (MGM) fortified with Vitamin A, iron, iodine, zinc, and folic acid, and are MGM formulations using fruits and vegetables in ready-to-use sachet.

Not only that, this program also provides training for mothers and caregivers on basic nutrition, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, meal planning, safe food handling and preparation, and backyard vegetable gardening.

According to the 2011 Updating of Nutritional Status of Filipino Children and other Population Groups, among zero to five-year-old Filipino children, two out of 10 are underweight based on age, and three out of 10 are under height.

Accordingly, children who are underweight will have slow growth and development, become sickly, and will have low performance in school.

Children aged six months to two-years-old face a critical period since they have heightened need in nutrition, and are prone to diseases and infections.

DSM completes acquisition of Fortitech and strengthens its human nutrition business

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Fortitech, Inc. (Fortitech). The transaction, for a total enterprise value of USD 634 million (about 495 million) strengthens DSM`s Human Nutrition and Health business, by expanding the company`s value chain presence and adding additional capabilities. As a result of the acquisition, announced on 8 November 2012, approximately 520 employees are joining DSM.

Feike Sijbesma, CEO and Chairman of the DSM Managing Board, said: "The acquisition of Fortitech is the ninth acquisition in the Nutrition cluster since we announced our corporate strategy DSM in motion: driving focused growth in September 2010. These acquisitions will contribute to the current and future growth of our attractive portfolio in health, nutrition and materials, resulting in stronger and more stable growth and profitability for DSM overall."

Leendert Staal, President and CEO of DSM Nutritional Products, commented: "Completing the acquisition of Fortitech is another milestone in the implementation of DSM`s Nutrition strategy. We are expanding our value chain presence and will be able to deliver more value to our customers. Fortitech will be an important part of the Human Nutrition and Health business within DSM Nutritional Products. Our attention is now fully focused on ensuring a smooth integration of the Fortitech business in a timely and efficient manner, with business continuity and customer satisfaction as key priorities for us while we welcome Fortitech`s 520 employees to DSM."

Strategic rationale Customers especially in the food and beverage industry are increasingly looking for solutions providers offering a broad range of food ingredient blends that cover a more comprehensive portfolio of ingredients, sometimes even requesting the complete formula, for a given product. DSM`s Human Nutrition and Health (HNH) premix business is a channel to market primarily for its own nutritional ingredients. Fortitech offers customized solutions in blends with a highly responsive and flexible customer service model. Fortitech works with a broad range of externally sourced nutrients and food ingredients including vitamins, minerals, nucleotides, amino acids, herb extracts, nutraceuticals, flavors, seasonings, colors, caffeine, proteins, sweeteners, carbohydrates and enzymes.

The acquisition of Fortitech accelerates DSM`s strategy to become a full solutions provider in food ingredient blends. For DSM the acquisition of Fortitech expands its value chain presence, while adding additional capabilities to its business.

With the acquisition of Fortitech DSM now has announced over 2.8 billion worth of growth enhancing acquisitions in just over two years, of which 2.4 billion in its Nutrition cluster. After completion of the announced acquisitions DSM`s Nutrition cluster will on a pro forma basis realize 4.6 billion in net sales with an EBITDA-margin target in the range of 20-23% on an annual basis, resulting in stronger and more stable growth and profitability for DSM overall. These acquisitions form an integral part of DSM`s strategy for its Nutrition cluster and will contribute to the current and future growth of DSM`s attractive portfolio in health, nutrition and materials.

Integration Full scale integration of the two businesses will now begin. A dedicated integration team consisting of both DSM and Fortitech representatives will work diligently to assess the best way to combine the two organizations while focusing on future synergy generation between both businesses.

Fortitech Fortitech, a privately held company based in Schenectady (New York, USA), is a leader in customized, value added food ingredient blends for food & beverage, infant nutrition and dietary supplements industries. The company has approximately 520 employees. Fortitech has six production sites located in New York (USA), California (USA), Campinas (Brazil), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Gastrup (Denmark) and Poznan (Poland), with sales offices in China and Mexico.

Financial highlights Net sales for 2013 are expected to be about USD 270 million with an EBITDA of about USD 70 million, including synergies and excluding exceptional items. DSM has identified attractive cost synergies at about 10% of net sales, which will be fully realized by 2015. In addition, one-time synergies - primarily capital expenditure avoidance- are estimated at USD 70 million. DSM expects the transaction to be EPS accretive in the first year after closing.

Research and Markets: Food Micro, Seventh Edition – Comparison of the Food Microbiology Testing Markets in the US and EU

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/p39b3b/food_micro) has announced the addition of the "Food Micro, Seventh Edition - Comparison of the Food Microbiology Testing Markets in the US and EU" report to their offering.

Food Micro, Seventh Edition: Comparison of the Food Microbiology Testing

Markets in the US and EU (Food Micro7) summarizes and compares key data on the food microbiology testing markets in the US and Europe to provide both an overview and new insights into these two important markets and as a result, the state of the global food microbiology testing market.

Food Micro, Seventh Edition: Comparison of the Food Microbiology Testing Markets in the US and EU (Food Micro7) consolidates and compares extensive primary research conducted by Strategic Consulting in its two most recent food reports:

- Food Micro, Fifth Edition: Microbiology Testing in the U.S. Food Industry (Food Micro5) published in May 2011

- Food Micro, Sixth Edition: Food Microbiology Testing in Europe (Food Micro6) published in January 2012

Food Micro7 compares market size, value and growth as well as the testing methods, practices and trends shaping food microbiology testing in the United States and Europe. In comparing the US and EU markets, Food Micro7 highlights the similarities and thus areas of potential growth/consolidation in the market, as well as explores the differences and areas of potential differentiation and/or targeting in the market.

There are many similarities in food production and food safety issues between the US and EU. Both regions enjoy a large and diverse food supply that is, as a result, increasingly global. Both regions also maintain high standards with regard to food quality and safety, which include some food industry approval processes and regulations and a vigilant public concerned with the quality and safety of the food they eat. The US and the EU share a public that is both passionate about food and increasingly attentive to the issue of food safety.

Yet there also are some major differences between the two regions. In 2010, 213.2 million microbiology tests were collected in the US food processing industry, a 14.4% increase since 2008. Routine tests, used as indicators of the presence and levels of microorganisms in the plant or the food product, accounted for 166.9 million of these tests, or 78% of all food microbiology tests performed in the US. Tests for TVO, Coliform/E. coli, and Yeast/Mold are the most common routine tests conducted in the US.

Research and Markets: Food Micro-Fifth Edition: Microbiology Testing in the US Food Industry

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/lxq3kc/food_microfifth) has announced the addition of the "Food Micro-Fifth Edition: Microbiology Testing in the US Food Industry" report to their offering.

Food Microbiology Testing Shows Healthy Growth

New regulations and public demand for safe food fuel growth in testing volume in the food processing industry and competition among industrial diagnostics companies. Woodstock, VT Industrial diagnostic companies competing in the food sector will continue to face exciting but turbulent times in the coming few years, according to a new report from Strategic Consulting, Inc., a leading knowledge resource for the industrial diagnostics industry.

In its new report, Food Micro, Fifth Edition: Microbiology Testing in the U.S. Food Industry (Food Micro-5), Strategic Consulting (SCI) tracks changes to microbiology testing practices as the U.S. food industry strives to produce safe and wholesome foods in an increasingly global market. According to the report, new regulatory requirements and heightened public concern about food safety issues have increased concern and testing in the food sector: In 2010, 213.2 million microbiology tests were collected in the US food processing industry, a 14.4% increase since 2008.

After a decade of solid but quiet growth, the microbiology testing requirements of the food processing industry have been thrust into the public spotlight again, driving healthy growth in food diagnostic testing, says Thomas Weschler, president of SCI and lead author of Food Micro-5. Given the opportunities in this market, strong industrial diagnostic companies prone to action should do well, he says.

Food Micro-5 examines the market, methods, technologies and key companies involved in microbiology testing in the food processing industry.

Primary research was conducted with more than 100 food processing plants producing a broad range of products in the meat, dairy, fruit/vegetable, and processed food segments. SCI also contacted many of the senior quality and food safety officers at the top-30 food companies in order to include both the strategic and the operational perspective on the U.S. food processing industry.

TVO, Coliform/E. coli, Yeast/Mold, and Staphylococcus are the routine microbiology tests that are generally used in the food processing industry as indicators of microorganisms in the plant or food product. The test volume for routine/indicator organisms went up by just over 10% between 2008 and 2010. During that same two-year period, however, testing for specific pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, and E. coli O157 increased by more than 30%.

While food companies make continuous investments in food safety improvements, new regulations and public demand will drive even more testing, and as a result, new diagnostic technologies and companies are entering the market, Weschler says.

Research and Markets: Food Micro, Sixth Edition – Food Microbiology Testing in Europe

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/75cr9x/food_micro_sixth) has announced the addition of the "Food Micro, Sixth Edition - Food Microbiology Testing in Europe" report to their offering.

Food Micro, Sixth Edition: Food Microbiology Testing in Europe

(Food Micro6) is the first definitive report to focus exclusively on the European food microbiology testing market. Food Micro6 reviews the methods, technologies, companies, regulations and trends shaping food safety testing in Europe. Europe is a substantial market for food microbiology testing. With a population of over 500 million, the 27 countries of the European Union (EU) conducted an estimated 275 million food safety microbiology tests in 2011. In comparison, there were 213 million tests conducted in the US in 2010.

In addition to size, the European food safety testing market differs from the US market in areas such as methods used, organisms tested and regulations. As a result, Europe must be examined and understood as a separate entity as it relates to food microbiology testing, and not simply thought of and treated as like the US. Food Micro6 tracks, analyzes and reports on the distinct and important EU food microbiology testing market.

According to Tom Weschler, president of Strategic Consulting and lead author of Food Micro6, Food safety microbiology testing in the EU will reach close to 350 million tests in 2016, at which point we expect the market to top $1 billion in value. A resurgence in public awareness in the wake of the 2011 E.coli outbreak in Germany, and the continued focus of the European Food Safety Authority on EU-wide systems, could drive test volumes even higher.

In preparing this new and comprehensive review of the European food microbiology testing market, Strategic Consulting (SCI) conducted more than 175 detailed interviews in 11 European countries accounting for 77% of all agricultural/food value-added in the European Union.

Because SCI conducted primary research with food-processing plants in Europe, Food Micro6 is able to offer new, detailed data on European food safety testing such as test volumes, methods used for routine and pathogen testing, and costs per test performed. Differences in testing practices are analyzed for the meat, dairy, fruits/vegetables, and processed food segments. Variations within countries are outlined, and expected changes in future testing practices are discussed.

Food Micro6 incorporates:

- Lengthy interviews with food processing plants in the meat, dairy, fruit/vegetable, and processed food segments in 11 European countries representing 77% of the total food production in the EU.
