President Barack Obama Bestows NYU Langone Medical Center’s Jan Vilcek, MD, PhD, with the National Medal of Technology …

NYU Langone Medical Center announced today President Barack Obama named Jan Vilcek, MD, PhD, professor of microbiology at NYU Langone, and co-inventor of the rheumatoid arthritis drug Remicade, a recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation. This year 11 individuals will receive this medal, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government upon scientists, engineers, and inventors. He will receive his award from President Obama at a White House ceremony later this year.

The award recognizes those who have made lasting contributions to Americas competitiveness and quality of life and helped strengthen the Nations technological workforce. Nominees are selected by a distinguished independent committee representing the private and public sectors. Dr. Vilcek is being recognized for his pioneering work on interferons and monoclonal antibodies.

Dr. Vilcek joined NYU Langone at the age of 31 as an assistant professor of microbiology. He devoted his entire career to the study of a group of natural regulators of the immune system called cytokines. Dr. Vilcek devoted much of his career to the study of interferons, making contributions to the understanding of their nature and helping develop their clinical applications. In the 1980's, Dr. Vilcek and his colleague, Junming Le, PhD, adjunct associate professor of microbiology at NYU Langone, generated an artificial antibody to one type of cytokine that, in close collaboration with the biotechnology company Centocor (now part of Johnson & Johnson, and recently renamed Janssen Biotech), they then developed into a drug that has become known as infliximab or Remicade. Remicade has since become approved for the treatment of Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It is estimated that to date over two million patients have been treated with Remicade in the United States and abroad.

Using funds due to him for his role in the development of Remicade, Dr. Vilcek and his wife Marica F. Vilcek have generously given more than $120 million to NYU Langone Medical Center to fund scholarships, research, and the new medical student residence hall at NYU School of Medicine. Their ongoing support is an outward display of their deep gratitude for the many opportunities the medical center has provided Dr. Vilcek as his intellectual home.

In addition to their support of NYU Langone, Dr. Vilcek and his wife also established The Vilcek Foundation in 2000 to honor and publicize the enormous contributions immigrants have made to biomedical science and the arts in the United States. The Foundation's mission, where Mrs. Vilcek serves as Vice President and Cofounder, derives in large part from Mrs. Vilcek's interest and professional work in the arts and as an Art Historian.

Dr. Vilcek, a native of Bratislava, Slovakia, received his medical degree from the Comenius University Medical School in Bratislava in 1957, and his Ph.D. from the Institute of Virology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, also based in Bratislava, in 1962. The success of Remicade has spurred the development of other anti-TNF agents that are being used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions.

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was created by statute in 1980 and is administered for the White House by the U.S. Department of Commerces Patent and Trademark Office. By highlighting the national importance of technological innovation, the medal is also meant to inspire future generations of Americans to prepare for and pursue technical careers to keep America at the forefront of global technology and economic leadership.

History recounts Alexander the Great's search for a restorative spring, and Hollywood managed to age Brad Pitt backwards in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." But the true fountain of youth may lie in your own genetic code, according to a study published Thursday.

An offshoot of the receptor gene dopamine which has been linked to the pursuit of social, physical, and intellectual activity is more often found in those who live long lives than those who don't, scientists at the University of California, Irvine, and Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York found.

"Its been well documented that the more youre involved with social and physical activities, the more likely youll live longer. It could be as simple as that," Robert Moyzis, PhD, professor of biological chemistry at UC Irvine, said in a press release. While the genetic variant may not directly influence longevity, it is associated with personality traits that have been shown to be important for living a longer, healthier life," he noted.

The particular genetic trait studied, referred to as the DRD4 7R allele, appears to modify the effect of dopamine, which in turn appears to enhance a person's ability to respond to his or her surroundings, according to the research published in The Journal of Neuroscience. The allele is found predominantly in people over the age of 90 and, separately, associated with with longer life in mice.

Scientists examined the genetic makeup of 310 participants from The 90+ Study, a 2003 body and mind analysis of the oldest of the old in the United States. When compared with those aged 7 to 45, results revealed a 66 percent increase of DRD4 7R presence among the 90+ elderly, which was significantly associated with elevated physical activity. Additionally, mice lacking the genetic relative experienced a 7 to 9.7 percent drop in life expectancy when compared to those with the variant.

Even though a simple chromosomal happenstance can raise your likelihood of long life, if not eternal youth, Dr. Moyziz emphasized the importance of exercise in promoting one's optimal health and longevity. [I]t is clear that individuals with this gene variant are already more likely to be responding to the well-known medical adage to get more physical activity.

Complete Nutrition opens Casper location

Casperites have a new option for their nutritional supplement and weight loss needs.

Complete Nutrition opened for business Friday in the Studio City Center in east Casper.

The owner of the shop, part of an Omaha, Neb.-based chain of more than 150 stores, said his business is unlike others of its kind because of its emphasis on consultation and education.

We not only have great products that work, we also have people in here that consult for free, said Carson Stratman, owner of the Casper store.

The store located in the same East Second Street building as Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Great Clips is Stratmans fourth location across the country. The Omaha native has also opened locations in Kalispell, Mont.; Minot, N.D.; and Twin Falls, Idaho.

Stratman said Caspers business climate is an ideal fit. He said the city has an ideally sized population base and comparatively low unemployment rates.

At the same time, its not too big where well get lost in the shuffle, he said.

The store will be open seven days a week, run by a staff of about four. Complete Nutrition will offer first-week sales and ongoing discounts for members of the military, police and fire departments.

Stratman said each staff member is trained extensively about each of the products and aims to give each customer a personal and comfortable experience.

Its overwhelming and can be somewhat confusing and intimidating to take the jump into a lifestyle change said Dan Biskup, a consultant at the store. We totally eliminate the confusion and intimidation and offer a nonthreatening environment.
